DEPUTY AMBASSADOR RECOGNISES BREXIT CONCERNS

In a meeting last Tuesday, local British residents had the chance to put their concerns about the outcome of the recent EU referendum to the Deputy Ambassador, Tim Hemmings, and Consul for Alicante, Sarah-Jane Morris. The British Embassy representatives promised to keep them up to date with developments concerning the UK’s exit from the European Union. The meeting discussed the practical implications of the referendum outcome, and was hosted by the provincial government of Alicante. Local government officials, hote-

liers and legal specialists spoke to the recently appointed Mr Hemmings about the key issues facing British nationals in Spain after the EU membership referendum. The meeting also heard the views of representatives from local English speaking associations. Tim Hemmings reassured British residents that they would “not experience any immediate changes in their circumstances”. Recognising the high number of Brits living in the Valencia region, he explained that the rights of both British and Spanish citizens to live, work and study in each other’s countries had not changed, and the UK would remain a full member of the EU until exit negotiations were completed. The Deputy Ambassador emphasised the strong trade and investment links between the UK and Spain, and said that the UK’s relationship with Spain would remain close after the UK’s exit from the EU. With the subject of healthcare very much on the Brexit agenda, on the previous day the Quirónsalud hospital Torrevieja held a meeting with the British residents of the region in order to report on the possible consequences in legal and health matters that leaving the EU may present. Ensuring the correct coverage of medical services is the key to alleviate the potential consequences of Brexit, according to international experts group Quirónsalud, but as with the Embassy staff on the following day they too were careful to explain that the negotiating process is yet to begin so anything being suggested or advised at this stage is based purely on the opinion of the individuals and the agencies concerned. What is worth noting, however, is that UK citizens must be in possession of the green Residency Certificate because, when it comes to anything connected with

acquired or vested rights, they will, most certainly, be based on residency. Local commentator Darren James, who attended the Tuesday conference, said on his Facebook page that “it was very reassuring to hear from many Spanish mouths that are 100% in supporting the British plight. Life saved in Alcampo with defibrilltor A German national, who’s heart stopped whilst he was shopping in Alcampo hypermarket in La Zenia Boulevard, was treated with a defibrillator by local security staff before being rushed to Torrevieja hospital, where he is now said to be recovering satisfactorily An onlooker said that the use of the defibrillator by security personnel undoubtedly saved the subject’s life after he suffered a cardiac arrest while accompanying his family in the greengrocers area. At first, the man was attended by security employees of Alcampo but as his condition deteriorated they quickly contacted the security centre in the Boulevard requesting the use of a defibrillator. Staff was quickly on the scene and after applying just two doses of electrical current the man’s heart it began to beat once again which was maintained until the arrival of the emergency services who transferred the individual to the Torrevieja hospi-

tal. The prompt availability of the defibrillator, together with the professional response of the Alcampo and Boulevard staff, successfully resolved what could have easily been a fatal situation. According to statistics in Spain around 100 people die each day from cardiac arrest, something that is preventable, in most cases, by the application of cardiac massage and use of the defibrillator, if applied within the first couple of minutes. This was the third life to be saved in a Alcampo hypermarket in less than two months with two similar events taking place in Madrid and Zaragoza, both of which also resulted in a happy outcome. La Zenia Boulevard has five defibrillators, four of which are fixed but one of which is completely mobile, fitted to an electric scooter, and able to respond to emergencies throughout the centre.

Lack of Police creates insecurity at local markets

raders at the Wednesday and Friday markets in La Mata and Torrevieja have said that a lack of police presence is encouraging the return of illegal vendors who are once again flocking in and taking up space in the streets to sell off their counterfeit goods. They say that there have been a number of incidents recently where these blanket top vendors have been confronted by regular traders with blows exchanged and although none of the incidents have so far been particularly significant the confrontations are undoubtedly escalating and will certainly lead to a serious situation in the future. A police spokesman said that during the summer months, particularly with the security situation as it is across much of Europe, there are many other priorities that the police have to deal with so a reduction in officers attending the markets is only to be expected. The Councillor for markets, however, África Celdrán (PSOE), who says that she has the full support of the mayor, met with the head of the local police last week where she demanded police reinforcements for the markets to curb these problems as well as the selling of counterfeit goods. She said that many of the exchanges between the legal and illegal traders have so far been only verbal but the way the situation is developing it won’t be too long before violence is involved. She gave the police chief several images that show

evidence of illegal and unlicensed sales, which were provided by the traders themselves explaining that most of the blanket top vendors are of Senegalese origin, and they are exacerbating the situation by place their products, usually t shirts, shorts and so forth, right next to the market stalls that are dealing in legal clothing. They are also flouting the market rules as they don’t pay for the space that they occupy which enables them to offer their goods at much reduced prices. Following the meeting the chief of police said that he will try to strengthen the police presence at the markets but the provision of additional manpower will mean reductions elsewhere. He said that that the council leadership consider it a priority that the police maintain visibility along the promenades and local beaches where illegal trading is a particular problem during the summer months and this could well be one areas from which his officers have to be diverted. There are currently 700 traders who attend the two markets, all of whom pay a fee to the council for the pitches that they occupy. One trader said that the current situation is not being helped by the requirement for them to move to the new market site in the Antonio Soria Park. They say that they remain unconvinced by the council proposal which will inevitably see a large number of traders refusing to move.

Torrevieja becomes homeport for Maritime Rescue Vessel The mayor of Torrevieja, Jose Manuel Dolon, visited the Maritime Rescue Vessel SAR Mesana last week where he met the Capitán Marítimo de Alicante, Cayetano Pérez Pérez and the Chief del Centro de Control de Salvamento Marítimo de Valencia-Alicante, Antonio Padial Sayas. The rescue vessel is currently docked at the Muelle de la Sal in Torrevieja from where it will operate during the coming months in response to the needs of the maritime emergency rescue service or as a towing vessel to assist those boats that find themselves in difficulty. Captain Jorge Garcia showed the visitors around the ship as he explained the previous service and background of the SAR Mesana as well as the operation of the main ship rescue systems and its capabilities. The mayor said that he was delighted that the request of the Harbourmaster, Rafael Rodriguez Valero, had not been ignored by the Ministry of Development and that he city was get-

ting, albeit temporarily, the rescue mechanisms tailored to their needs. He said that the port would no longer be at a disadvantage to the many other Spanish coastal ports that do have this type of rescue craft. He said that the ship was already proving its worth as in the few short days that it had been in port it had already responded to a possible drowning and to the assistance of

two fishing vessels that had found themselves in difficulty. The mayor said that it was therefore imperative that the SAR Mesana or a similar vessel be permanently moored in Torrevieja harbour as a major coastal resort and as such he has once again reiterated his request with an urgent petition to the Government of Spain.

Habaneras attracts Private Funding

new private initiative aimed at funding the annual “International Habaneras and Polyphony of Torrevieja " has been launched in the town and has already gained the support of four companies that are involved in the construction industry and two municipal contractors. TM Construction and Gomendio, together with the proprietors of Ferris Hills and earthmoving equipment manufacturer Explanaciones have joined up with municipal contractors STV Management, responsible for maintaining the municipal gardens and Agamed, which manages the integrated water syatem. Putting on the competition costs the Ayuntamiento in the region of half a million euros every year and although the extent of the sponsorship has not been decided at this stage it is thought that it will relieve the council of a large proportion of any former expenditure.

Pilar Mayor pays tribute to cleaners O

fficials in Pilar de la Horadada reported that they had accepted the recommendation of the Director General of the Valencia Security Agency and will purchase 27 bulletproof vests for the use of the Policia Local. The agreement was approved by the council last Wednesday and will cost in the region of 13,000 euros. In providing details of further approved expenditure the municipal spokesman, Alfonso Armenteros, said that the mayor, Ignacio Ramos (PSOE), also authorised the purchase of 20 computers for Horadada Council’s Administrative Centre located within the sports centre, for which 9413.80 euros has been allocated. The computers will be used for training activities that are regularly organised by the Department of Employment. Expenditure on social aid has also been approved, to the sum of 2,790 euros, which will be allocated to five families in the municipality to cover the cost of their residential water and electricity supply. A further 1,350 euros will be used to supplement the basic income of a small number of residents living on the poverty line while 500 euros

has been allocated in order to provide a hearing device for a local man who is particularly hard of hearing. Following the budget meeting the mayor, Ignacio Ramos, took the opportunity to visit the group of employees who make up the street cleaning and environmental teams that are seen operating around the town. As well as chatting to many of the individuals the mayor also spent time looking over a selection of their new equipment whilst it was demonstrated in operation. He then congratulated the 55 members of staff who provide the service saying how well they are thought of by the people of the town as they go about their daily tasks of keeping the streets clean, particularly during the summer season, when Horadada receives thousands of additional tourists into the area. Ramos said that all residents "should endeavour to maintain a clean and attractive environment in Pilar de la Horadada which helps the people to remain positive about the town and to enjoy the surroundings in which they reside."

German kidnap victim freed in Torrevieja

Following numerous complaints by local residents, the Local Police in Rojales have acquired vehicle speed detecting equipment from the DGT in order to try to control vehicles who drive at excessive speed through the municipality.

The equipment is installed within a patrol vehicle and is capable of constant monitoring of a road section, In addition, the police have also obtained a breathalyser and the associated equipment to enable them to issue fines by the roadside.

The officers were alerted to the incident by the man´s sister who had received a call from the kidnappers demanding money in exchange for the release of the man. When officers arrived at the scene they found the man locked in a room of the house and showing

clear signs of malnutrition, and showing signs of having been beaten. One of the alleged kidnappers were present at the property, although they tried, and failed, to escape. The officers subsequently arrested 5 people, 3 men between the ages of 26 an 35, and 2 women aged 26 and 37, all of whom have been remanded in custody. The investigation remains open whilst officers investigate a number of other related offences.

Local Heroes Two members of the Policia Locale have been recognised for their bravery in Algorfa. Enrique Escribano Rodriguez and Jose Pedro de Alcantara Lopez Lopez both risked their lives in recent operations and were commended by the Chief Constable for their unselfish actions.

They are pictured receiving the Civil Merit award by the mayor of Algorfa City Council, Manuel Ros, who has also submitted a dossier on their actions recommending further awards to the Ministry of the Interior.

The Chief of Police, Iñaki Esparza, says that there are at least 10 areas in the municipality where residents have raised concerns about speeding vehicles, and it is the intention of the police to control these “dangerous places” by monitoring and sanctioning “motorists not respecting the speed limits”.

Fundraising target reached for secure fencing at rescue centre Work will soon begin on a major Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre fence upgrade after generous supporters helped raise €13,000 in just three months to secure the Rojales sanctuary’s collapsing perimeter. The equine rescue centre launched the fundraiser in March, after a custody battle over a “walking skeleton” rescued horse named Oscar turned sour, leaving centre co-founders Sue and Rod Weeding feeling "under siege" in their own home. The centre suffered a string of break-ins and Sue and Rod, who live at the refuge, also began to notice vans driving past slowly at night. More than 90 online donors, plus countless others at the centre’s monthly open days and via its charity shops, generously donated to allow the immediate construction of a secure new 378m boundary fence. "We've been overwhelmed by the generosity of our supporters. This

The final donations came as a peacock named Jasper was stolen from the rescue centre earlier this month (thankfully, he was later returned), and a two-year-old foal named Lily suffered a stable injury in which foul play could not be ruled out. Other items stolen from the rescue centre over recent months included a television, heater, fan, saddles, bridles and tools. While the thefts were deeply concerning, Sue said she and Rod felt buoyed by the wave of support for the centre’s fence fundraiser. She thanked everyone who donated to the cause – from those who could spare just €5 to the three kind souls who anonymously donated €1000, £1000 and €5000 each. “When you start a rescue centre like ours, you do it because you

cannot ignore the wrongs you are witnessing. You don't really have a plan. You are motivated by a passion that drives you forward,” Sue said. "The wonderful thing is that so many people have now joined us on this journey, helping and supporting in so many ways that we feel we are no longer on our own." The Weedings are now awaiting final council approval before beginning work on a new two-metre high block wall across the road-front boundary of the rescue centre, complete with concrete foundations and topped by metal fencing for extra security. ‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

Atlantis or What? I am not a great lover of conspiracy theories; I do not believe that Princess Diana was murdered by MI6, nor do I believe that the Moon landing was an elaborate US hoax filmed in Neil Armstrong's back garden. However, I am intrigued by the story of Atlantis, and the links with the Canary Islands that pop up from time to time. This intrigue was fed even more a few days ago following a meeting with a group of divers who were visiting the islands… Over the years, the tantalising story of the lost city of Atlantis is thought to have been Bermuda, the Azores, Gibraltar, the Bahamas, whilst the Russians claimed to have found it 100 miles off the coast of Cornwall. Boring cynics claim that it only existed in the mind of that wise old bird, Plato, who 2600 years ago was merely giving an example, rather than referring to a literal place on the map. Indeed, somewhere near Greece would seem to be the most likely place of all. Atlantis was considered to be a major sea power located in the Atlantic Ocean. Its kings were descended from Poseidon, the god of the sea, but their divinity became diluted after mixing with humans. The island conquered much of Africa and Western Europe and by 9600BC had put paid to most of its enemies. Plato describes the island in some detail, with mountains to the north and a plain to the south. Over the years, scholars have attempted to locate the real Atlantis, believing that it represented some form of ancient superpower, with others claiming that that the destruction of Atlantis was inspired by the Black Sea floods of around 5000BC, which might have also inspired the stories of the major flood in the Old Testament.

Plato claimed that Atlantis disappeared “in a single day and night, disappearing in the depths of the sea”, after it failed to successfully invade Athens. Tsunamis were recorded in the region, with one massive event hitting Lisbon with a 10-storey tidal wave in 1755. Plato referred to Atlantis in his writings as an island in front of the straits known as ‘the pillars of Hercules’; it is likely that these pillars were the Straits of Gibraltar. Plato’s detailed description has focussed the search on the Atlantic and Mediterranean as the most likely sites for the city. It is currently claimed that Atlantis is submerged under mud flats somewhere off the coast of Spain, just off Cadiz to be more exact, according to some scientists. The exact location has been pinpointed with the assistance of digital mapping, radar and underwater technology, using a satellite photo of a suspected submerged city to locate the site. Interestingly, US scientists claim that the residents who survived the destructive tsunami fled and eventually created new cities inland; these cities have been located in marshland and it is evidence from these sites that is being used in the current underwater surveys.

Maybe, just maybe, a conspiracy theory is evolving here… There are many who continue to claim that Atlantis sank into the Atlantic Ocean, leaving its highest mountains as islands calling from the sea. These islands are, of course, the Canary Islands and that the native people of these islands, the Guanches, were descendants of the people of Atlantis. Whether Atlantis is ever found, if indeed it ever existed, the story of the rise and fall of this great power, is certainly a fascinating and inspirational one, which will continue to be linked with the Canary Islands for many years to come. One event that continues to fascinate me is an account of a discovery that appeared online very briefly some months ago. Grid-like lines that resembled city streets were spotted on Google Earth, just off the Canary Islands. Google quickly dismissed the suggestions, claiming that the lines were left by a boat that was collecting data for them. However, this event excited many researchers and the Google explanation was dismissed with some cynicism by some experts. An Orihuela businessman has reached a theoretical agreement with the current Chinese owners to purchase a landmark building in the centre of Madrid, the iconic edificio España de Madrid.

Our recent auction on Facebook and Ebay was a great success allowing us to fund the treatment of a number of feral cats in and around Play Flamenca. They have now been moved to the Finca where they will be cared for as they live out their days in relative security. We are hoping to use some of the income raised from the open day to make a separate area for the 4 geese that we now also care and hopefully by next Saturday we will also be able to show visitors the new stable for Alma Blanca which is nearing completion. The Federación de Asociaciones de Orihuela Costa is expressing concerns that tickets are still being sold for this year´s Campoamor Music Festival, scheduled for August 3, despite the licence application for the event being denied by Orihuela Town Hall. The FAOC claim to have seen the denial first hand and the fact that the decision has been communicated to the organisers, and yet there still seems to be a case of denial and ignorance on the part of

those selling tickets. The annual gathering has always faced opposition from neighbours in the area, not least because of the huge disturbance and clean-up bill, but recent years has seen attempts to legalise the event, however not yet with any success, and despite the denial again this year it is still likely that thousands of young people will descend on the area and leave a wave of disturbance and destruction in the wake.

Danny Ray, James Brown's Master of ceremonies since 1960 said 'Are you ready to have a really funky good time? These times never die!' Brown, who died a decade ago, famously sang 'Like a sex Machine', and 'I Feel Good', to name but two of his mega hits, lived on in the summer night concert. It was as if legendary Brown was there. The JB's, featuring Martha High, who has been with the group since 1964, and Cynthia Moore, from The Bettersweets, starred. High, who sang from her new 2016 album 'Singing for the Good Times', born in Washington, toured with Brown in the sixties. 'It's a Man's World', I feel Good', 'Out of Sight', the king of dance, Brown, one of the world's best ever 10 artists, would have been proud, as was the fanatical European audience. Trombonist Tyrone Jefferson, musical director of the JB's since 1976, said 've are here to remember the legend James Brown - The

Bassist Fred Thomas, drummer Tony Cook, who contributed to the live performance of 'The Godfather of Soul', performed alongside trumpeter Hollie Ferris, trumpeter Joe Collier, saxophonist Jeff Watkins, Rob Watson on guitar, and drummer George 'spike' Nealy. Carp - R - Us Club News Our anglers on the 21st of July, fished round nine of the Summer series of matches on the river Segura in Murcia town centre. The river is still not on song but some Carp were caught. The winner on the day with a weight of was 4.89kg was Andy Foden using the method feeder and corn. In second place was Mark Foden with 4.84kg also on method feeder and corn, in 3rd place was Steve Collins with 4.02kg also on the method and corn and in 4th was Steve Fell also on the feeder with 2.18kg. Round ten will be fished on the Eden canal stretch of the Segura in Guardamar. Pegs as normal at 8.00am and fishing is from 9.00 till 2.00pm. The Clubs next Quiz night will be on Tuesday the 26th of July. It

will start at 7.30pm, the cost is 1 Euro per person and teams of up to 6 can take part. The next one of our Sunday meetings will not be until the 7th of August. With the Committee meeting at 10.30 and this is followed by the General meeting at 11.00am. The latest charity night at Restaurante El Alto La Dolores was another fantastic success, with 190 people attending and spending generously on raffle tickets. 1st prize in the raffle was another Mediterranean Cruise, donated by Restaurant owners Andres and Berna, with the total amount raised, of 1,350 euros, being donated to Torrevieja Stroke Support. A very nice lady diner stirred the tickets well and pulled out the winning one for the cruise, which belonged to none other than the President of TSS, Lilybeth Stevens. Entertainment for the night was provided by the best Rock 'n' Roll band around, Woody and the Peckers. The dance floor filled up as soon as they started, and everybody reported on what a great night it was. Every month the Restaurant hosts a charity night, and the next one will be on Saturday 20th August, with local artist Lee Howard performing. Lee has been in the business for many, many years, and has played with top entertainers, as well as being a member of The Honeycombs. Tickets, at just 10 euros for a 2 course meal and top notch entertainment, are available at Restaurante El Alto La Dolores, The Card Place in Benimar, and REDZ cafe bar in Quesada.

PREPARING TO PLAY (PART 3) The last article in this series concentrated upon the preparation required by a golfer prior to the arrival at the golf course. The routine to follow when you arrive at the course should also be quite straightforward. Try to be as normal with your routine as you possibly can be, although we all know that competition changes our attitude to some degree but you have to cope with added pressure, but don’t be too concerned. It is important not to try and remove all of the extra excitement because this ensures that you can offer a little extra care where care is needed but the important thing to remember is that you must not race about, either physically or within our minds to ensure that you keep as calm as possible and you will help achieve the ideal mood in which to play. Booking in is an extra thing to do, so get it out of the way as soon as you can because it’s another one of those positive things to do; it removes the possibility of another worrying thought which might go through your mind. Try to occupy your mind with pleasant thoughts by associating with your friends until it is time to ‘get ready’. The players on the European our, start their warm-up session, one hour before their tee-up time and this has proved over the years to be an ideal time schedule for them, so it’s not a bad system to allow. Start with a few short wedge shots and finish with the driver. You do not have to go through the whole bag, and remember to only allow yourself a positive amount of time to practise because if you leave it too long and you may start to get it wrong.

San Miguel Golf Society at Las Colinas Even though in the midst of summer when numbers do tend to drop off, SMGS is retaining regularly high turn-outs, with 43 members and 9 guests making their way to Las Colinas for the 4th round of this year’s Eclectic Stableford competition. The course was in good condition especially the Greens after their recent maintenance. Only 2 players broke par Chris Hamblett with 27 points and current order of merit leader Steve Higgins with 38 points. Today saw the final of this year’s Singles Match play between surfing Steve Higgins and the Nomadic Ben Price, after a hard fought game Steve came out the winner 3&2 congratulations to both players on reaching the final. Stableford results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 5th Mary Cleary (28), 4th Brian Butler (30), Keith Stevenson (31), 2nd Gratten Forber (34) and 1st, Chris Hamblett (37). Silver Category: 5thh Eve Pettersson (30), 4th Hugh Reilly (31), 3rd Norman Cahill (32), 2nd Steve Davis (33 on CB), and 1st, Ken Flaherty (33 on CB). Gold Category: 5th Bjorn Pettersson (31 on CB), 4th Barry Roehrig (32 on CB), 3rd Darren Hancock (32 on CB), 2nd John Osborne (35) and 1st, with the best score of the day Steve Higgins (38). The actual Abacus winner disappeared before prize giving, so the bottle of wine made its way in to the hands of original runner up Derek Johnson. Two best visitor prizes went to runner-up Mitch Kaylor (30) and winner Darren Temple, with 31 points. Nearest the pins (open to all) on the par 3’s were won by Barry Roehrig (5), Ben Price (7), Robin Eastman (10), George Maughan (14) and Bjorn Pettersson (17). T.M.G.S. AT VILLAMARTIN GOLF COURSE - 20 JULY 36 members and guests made their way to this championship course for our 9am start. We were hoping that we would be able to get round before it got too hot but unfortunately for us we had a couple of slow groups in front of us and the round slowed to a snail’s pace of 5 hours! It appears that the marshal on duty that day couldn’t be bothered to speed them up. He drove past them on his buggy without saying anything to them. The course was in good condition for this time of year with a very light sanding of the greens made players think that they were slow when in fact it didn’t affect them at all.

by Mike Chapman There was yet another Club record score in our first game of the week which was a Change Partners where each player partners another member of the team for 6 holes with the best score of each pair counting towards the teams total. The team of Rod Doel, Joyce McClusky, Pete Dunn and Mike Mahony scored an incredible 94 pts beating the previous record by one point. It was hot and humid for our weekly stableford competition on Wednesday and there was one player whose putter was extremely hot with Marleen Billen scoring an amazing 45 pts. This was 11 pts clear of the second placed player as most of us found scoring difficult with the rough particularly thick at this time of the year. However whilst Marleen had the best game overall the shot of the day came from our President Doug Wright who secured his fourth hole in one on the long par 3 twelfth hole. This meant Doug took the total content of the 2's Club which was rather unlucky for Geoff Biggerstaff as he was the only player to score a 2 but at least he got a consolatory drink from Doug along with the rest of us at the 19th hole. The top four on the day were as follows: 1st Marleen Billen 45 pts 2nd Dave Pulling 34 pts 3rd Doug Wright 33 pts (c/b) 4th Peter Wickham 33 pts On Friday following a superb lunch for Club members and guests at Portico Mar the previous day we played a 2 ball better ball which was won by the pairing of Brian Townend and Rod Doel with a score of 43 pts. In second place were Pete Dunn and Reg Akehurst with 41 pts. Thanks to Dee Biggerstaff for organising the excellent lunch and to the staff for their excellent service.

Spanglish Golf Society at La Finca In assn with Sapphire Properties and Costa Blanca Green Fee Svcs This months the Spanglish Golf Society and a group of 30 players visited the established course at La Finca taking advantage of the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services. The weather was beautiful but a trifle George Michael (Wam) and the course was in excellent condition BUT we did have RAIN for at least 5 minutes. ‘Young Guns’ no match for Elche Vicente Garcia Stadium housed a fair sized crowd for this local pre season friendly, in which the hosts kept their more illustrious neighbours down to a single goal for 75 mins. New manager Gabi Correa fielded a predominantly youthful side, which included only 3 members from last season. It should have been 4, but local lad Burguillos of 6 seasons service, decided that it was impossible to combine training with his full time job - adios Burguillos and best of luck for the future. Wearing numbers 2,3 & 5 were Vicente, Luis Carlos and Martin, whilst the rest were totally unknown to Torry fans. Captain for the day was Pastor, who can boast Hungarian div 1 side Ferencvaros as one of his previous, is a new Torry acquisition, along with Abraham, signed from Almansa, but unfortunately he wasn't on show.

Elche almost took the lead after only 3 mins, but new keeper Oumar produced a worldly save to deny them. It didn't take much longer for them to find the net, for 6 mins later Pedro Montero drilled a fierce low drive through a crowded penalty area, somehow finding the smallest of spaces just inside the far post. Torry fought back well, Toni forcing Elche's keeper to pull off a top drawer save to deny him an equaliser on 12 mins. Elche then took control, dominating the remainder of the half. As per normal in friendlies, sweeping changes were made in the 2nd half, in fact the whole ELEVEN players were different

for Torry, but only 4 for Elche. A now totally inexperienced Torry side were no match for their experienced opponents, who were rampant throughout the 2nd half. Elche's 2nd goal was a sweet close range volley direct from a corner on 75 min, then 3 mins later it was like a knife slicing through butter, as they easily strolled through the defence for goal number 3. By the time Pedro Montero had converted the 4th goal on 83 mins, it was a case of "please ref, put us out of our agony", but all in all this was an entertaining spectacle for those that viewed it. Final score 0-4.

Bristol City lose 100% pre season record

Bristol City came of second best last week in their pre season friendly as they lost their 100% pre season record against La Liga club Granada CF in front of over 1000 fans at the Pinatar Arena. City were certainly competitive against a strong outfit who moved the ball quickly, but were undone by goals in each half from Gabriel Silva and Javi Marquez.

Torry kick off the new season against newly promoted near neighbours Almoradi on Sun 21 Aug, but before that they play friendly number 2. Make a note of Sat 30 Jul, ko 7.30, when div 2b side Real Murcia will visit Vicente Garcia Stadium.

Football Campus ends at CDM Orihuela Costa Last Friday saw the closing ceremony of the Municipal Football Camp held at the Playa Flamenca Sports Centre. The campus was attended by children aged between 5 and 15 years, who spent three hours per day enjoying their favourite sport. They were put through a variety of exercises aimed at teaching football techniques (control, passing, shooting, etc.) and tactics (positioning, coverage and support, etc.) during which, in all

cases, their skills and their football knowledge was greatly improved. The camp also allowed the participants to develop many of their life skills including decision making and learning through a global training system, etc. As well as educational objectives, promoting coexistence, cooperation, etc. and the promotion of the values friendship, comradeship and fair play. Each of the participants received a medal, and a photo.

It was nevertheless encouraging for City manager Lee Johnson who found there was not a great deal between the teams at any stage during the fixture. City were a danger on the counter-attack with the speed and directness of Kodjia, but were struggling to convert promising breaks into really standout chances. City flew back to UK at the weekend after enjoying a week of pre season training at La Manga.

Sheffield Utd ‘Meet and Greet’ Another English League Club who were using La Managa last week to prepare for their upcoming season were Sheffield United. The Blades played a couple of friendlies including their 4-1 thrashing of a Murcia Regional Representative squad in which striker Matt Done scored a brace. Earlier in the week, manager Chris Wilder had invited fans to go along, see the players put through their paces and then attend an informal ‘meet and greet’ session as 20 year old forward Che Adams was presented wih a cake on his birthday.
