Torrevieja cleans up it’s public image
Earlier in the year the Mayor made his intentions clear when he removed the name of the Infanta Cristina from the Sports Palace
A
s they attempt to clean up the image of the town the mayor of Torrevieja, Jose Manuel Dolon, says that his staff has now removed 23 commemorative or dedication plaques that bore the names of former public officials who had been convicted by the Spanish Courts of corruption or crimes against public finances or social security. These include the following municipal buildings: the Ayuntamiento de La Mata, the Municipal Library Carmen Jalón, the Municipal Leisure Centre, the Palacio de los Deportes, Campo de fútbol de césped artificial, Park of Nations, Park Lo Albentosa, Torre del Moro, Park del Salinero, Palacio el Música, Casa de la Tercera Edad de la calle Rafal, Parque de la Estación, Paseo de Vista Alegre, Pier de La Mata, Paseo de las Columnas, Fuente del Paseo del Palangre, Centro de Interpretación Salinera, three plaques on the Pier Eras de la Sal and el Paraje Natural del Molino del Agua and one at the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Center. Guidlines from the Department of Transparency and Social Responsibility suggesting that the
plaques be removed was first received by the mayor in a letter last March. He was informed of the recommendation, which came originally from the courts, requesting the cooperation of the city. Dolon said that he fully agreed with the recommendations within which it was stated "the consideration that the various cases of the criminal use of public resources and the spurious use of political power that the Community of Valencia has suffered have impacted very negatively in respect of the image that the people have of their politicians and their leaders. " The mayor also reminded the press that earlier in the year he had also ordered the removal of the name of the Infanta Cristina from the Sports Palace. "Cleaning up the public image of politicians within Valencia is urgently required. We have to ensure that all individuals and institutions are fully committed to the values of honesty and transparency, banishing the corrupt practices of many years of PP governments during which time so much damage has been inflicted on both the economy and on the Valencian people.

N332 Team out ‘In Force’
There was yet another full house at last Thursdays meeting of the Orihuela Costa Branch of the Royal British Legion as members and guests turned out ‘in force’ to welcome the N332 Team, Francisco Morales and Mark Nolan as they discussed many of the common problems that expat drivers are faced with when they move to Spain. Mark had the audience attention right from the start with his opening remark, ‘This is how you identify an unmarked police car.’ But the subject was covered for good reason, as a result of the increasing amount of car crime involving motorists being stopped by bogus Guardia Officers which is gradually spreading into the area.
The pair then covered matters including distraction theft and many of the more obvious matters such as vehicle documents, footwear, warning triangles and the necessary security of passengers, pets and loads in moving vehicles. Accompanying the two speakers on the night were Nicholas Bradford, the occasion being used to present the former West Midland Traffic Policeman with a token of appreciation for his help with the N332 project, and Paul Piccio, the President of C.L.A.R.O. who attended the event as part of his efforts to find out more about local clubs and groups that are operating on the Costa Blanca.
Loggers operating in Pinar de Campoverde Whilst not operating on quite the same scale as tree fellers in the vast wooded area of northwestern Maine, the Policia Locale from Pilar de la Horadada are nevertheless on the lookout for loggers who are illegally chopping down pine trees in Pinar de Campverde. According to a report, the ‘vandalism’ occurred last week where six trees, of the variety of Pino de Carrasco, were chopped down in the hilly section opposite the Área natural 'Río Seco' de Pinar de Campoverde, The police say that they consider such acts as very serious infringements in the Municipal Ordinance governing the maintenance of green areas, parks, gardens and woodland and are punishable by fines ranging from 901 to 1,500 euros per tree.

The government will bring forward the Overseas Elector Bill to abolish this arbitrary time limit, but it must undergo full Parliamentary scrutiny and debate, so unfortunately it cannot be passed before the Referendum.”

More than 120,000 people with Spanish IP addresses have now visited www.gov.uk/register-tovote since the beginning of the year. And thanks to the online registration system, more than 180,000 expats worldwide have so far completed their registration to vote, nearly double the number for last year’s General Election, which was itself a record figure. The process is easy and takes just five minutes. Go to www.gov.uk/register-to-vote or search for ‘UK register to vote’ on www.gov.uk. You need only your National Insurance number and passport. If you did vote in the general election last year, don’t assume you are still on the electoral roll: just as in the UK, you must renew your registration every year. You have until 7 June to go online and make sure you can have your say. If you were last on the electoral roll in NORTHERN IRELAND then you need to act quickly. The Electoral Office for NORTHERN IRELAND says that if you are appointing a proxy to vote at the EU Referendum, the deadline for sending in your printed application is 5.00pm on 3 June.
Purely in the name of entertainment, the ‘Last Day Zombie’ is a scenario which is based on the end of humanity caused by a deadly virus outbreak, one last fight for survival and one last stand for humanity ! The cast itself will feature over 400 people, including players, actors, and organisers. The activity developed by the company 'Last Day Alternative Entertainment Company' is not a competitive game, but one of survival. Throughout the evening, the participants, divided between zombies and survivors, will wander through the main streets of San Fulgencio, invading a number of different buildings and public areas. Players must survive on the streets all
That night, the streets of San Fulgencio will become the centre of all the activitiy, scenarios that will include chases and searches for clues, a real adrenaline rush as they use all their wits to avoid coming into contact with the 'virus' (symbolic) which will turn participants into zombies. The event is suitable for participants of all ages but anyone under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. Entrants will attempt to overcome a series of tests as they endeavour to evade capture by the zombies, pass the various trials and find the vaccines that help them survive. Information and ticket prices are on the website www.lastdayzombie.com You can also find the info on Facebook or by asking in the Town Hall.
In addition, the website has a survival guide that contains all the rules of the game. The zombie makeup is done by the organization (included in the ticket price). However, the privilege of being a zombie will cost you 10 euros whilst full entry to the experience as a survivor will cost 25 euros. Alternatively, for no charge, you can simply go along to watch the events unfold and take the experience in..

Torry Market set to move - AGAIN! Torrevieja´s weekly Friday market will move to its new location by the summer, if the mayor and the government get their way. The new location is the Parque Antonio Soria
It was in 2009 that the then government team first announced the transfer of the market away from the streets to a dedicated location, but the project has hit countless barriers ever since, not least from the traders themselves. Work began in 2011 on the 5 million euro project site, located near to the Aquopolis waterpark and Sports City, funded by the regional government through a series of grants. Estimated to be completed by Easter of 2012, the relocation failed to happen, despite the most recent PP led government team even arranging for the bus services to be extended to take in the new location, although the market itself remained steadfast. This week, the current mayor, José Manuel Dolón, has vowed that the move will take place before the summer of this year, once the administrative functions have been completed, and the public transport network arranged, so that the streets within the city centre can be freed from the disruption they have faced for decades, as the market operates in a safe and secure environment designed for the purpose.
HELP WITH TRANSPORT COSTS The Provincial Government has said that it will help the municipalities of the Vega Baja to meet the extra cost that they are currently incurring with the additional transport of waste following the closure of the Abornasa Plant in Crevillente. They have announced that they will now provide an additional 324,000 euro which will allow the rubbish to be moved from the municipalities to other regions outside the zonal plan. Provincial spokesman Javier
Sendra, explained that the closure of the Abornasa disposal plant in Crevillente has generated extraordinary expenses for the municipalities of Vega Baja who must now take their waste to plants Villena and Jijona, much further away. He said that the Provincial Government wants to help municipalities cope with the extra cost during this time when the local authorities have no landfill site at their disposal.

CALLS TO STOP WORK
Representatives of residents of Playa Lisa in Santa Pola have filed a petition with the town hall for work renewing the drinking water system in the area to be stopped until after the summer season.
The road closures are said to be causing considerable disruption to residents and local businesses alike, and with a lack of prior consultation, the groups are concerned that the summer season will be less than favourable for both business and the quality of life I the area. A total of 585 signatures representing 800 registered inhabitants have been collected asking for the suspension of the work, and demanding answers “within a week”, before alternative actions are considered.
Extra Funding to boost agricultural employment The Public State Employment Service (SEPE) has approved a grant of 1.6 million euros to create employment in the agricultural sector in municipalities of the Vega Baja this summer. The Ministry of Employment has given the green light to the grant through SEPE which will be used in the hiring of agricultural labourers who will be employed for tasks such as clearing and cleaning of rural roads and special programs by local municipalities in rural areas. The allocation of 1.6 million euros will be distributed according to the number of people unemployed in the agricultural sector in each municipality.
Alleged Ransom Payment by Government Thus, Albatera, Almoradi, Callosa and Orihuela should receive the bulk of the allowance as these are the municipalities in the region with most unemployed farmhands.

He said that improvements to all of the green areas are being made to improve their appearance, to provide additional environmental quality within the municipality and to provide an improved service to the residents who use them. Soler explained that when the initial maintenance contract was awarded, not all parks and gardens were included. Work would now be carried out on these. He also said that the public contractor for the maintenance of municipal parks and gardens, La Generala, would be carrying out some additional work such as a project in the Parque José Ramón García Antón and the Plaza Encarnacion Puchol de La Mata, without additional payment.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
No More UK Banking for Expats It used to be so easy. Not so many years ago, UK expats would simply call into the local branch of their UK bank, tell them that they were going to move to another country, give their new address, and that would be that. Banking would continue as normal, but with bank statements and correspondence popping into the letterbox of their new home overseas. A few years later, it became more difficult for UK expats to maintain a personal loan or a UK credit card once they moved abroad. A few years on, and hot on the heels of the banking crisis, new security measures and a paranoid fear of potential terrorist money laundering, it is now almost impossible for expats to open any form of bank account with a UK high street bank. I received an email from Joyce, who lives in the Costa Blanca, last week. She is a newly arrived expat, and very excited about her new home in the sun. Joyce and her partner Mike have worked hard over the years to finally achieve their dream. She has banked with the same UK high street bank since she was a teenager, has never had an overdraft, and maintains a substantial deposit with the bank. Following the sale of their home in the UK, she called into her local bank branch to tell them that she was moving to Spain, and tried to give them her new address.

By Bar rie Mahoney
Joyce was horrified at the bank’s reaction, which was not as expected; the bank immediately cancelled her credit card and told her that they would be unable to maintain an account for her whilst her main home was in Spain. The bank suggested that she transfer her account to their offshore subsidiary, which Joyce is reluctant to do, since with all the current upheaval, Joyce wants to maintain some stability with a bank that she knows and used to trust. Joyce has already set up an account with an English speaking Spanish bank, but Mike is unable to have his pension transferred to a bank outside the UK, which surprisingly is still the case with some pensions paid by a number of UK organisations; in this case a UK bank account is essential. Clearly, the UK authorities have a problem with expats opening or maintaining a UK bank account, which is particularly strange when the customer is already known to the bank, as in Joyce and Mike’s case. As well as having Spanish bank accounts, I was easily able to open a current account with a German bank a few months ago, so I fail to see why a British expat can no longer open or maintain a UK bank account from Spain, France or Italy. The options for expats who wish to maintain or open a UK bank account have narrowed in the last two years or so and, to my knowledge, there are no longer any UK high street banks or building societies that are prepared to open new accounts for expats due to international banking legislation. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but it is clear that it is best for expats to be less than frank when dealing with a UK bank, and ask to use a relative’s or friend’s UK address for correspondence, or a mail redirection service that can offer a discreet address (further information about this on my Expat Survival page). Alternately, there is always the option of opening an offshore bank account, but I understand that
these institutions require a more than substantial deposit, and are not that easy to pop into for a chat. This issue is a worrying one, as experienced by expats living in Greece last year. Many expats were unable to access pensions paid into their Greek bank accounts during the height of the crisis, and the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office recommended that British expats open a bank account in the UK instead. It seems that this is no longer an option should similar circumstances arise again in Greece or another country. This could potentially become a more serious issue should the UK vote to leave the European Union, and expats are unable to meet current residency requirements for banking within a European member state, and wish to rely upon a UK bank. If you have any personal experience of problems with your UK bank when leaving the UK, or difficulties in opening a UK bank account, please let me know for a future article. In the Bunker with ‘Mick the Grip’
J
ORDAN SPIETH recently played a round at Oakmont Country Club, Pennsylvania, in preparation for the defence of his US Open title on June 16th. “I thought I’d better get an idea of what I’m in for,” he said. Oakmont has 210 deep bunkers, including the infamous 100 yd. long Church Pews. With hardly any water, the course features deep ditches full of long grass, and the pitched greens are lightning-fast. The course has hosted eight US Opens, the last in 2007, when Angel Cabrera beat Tiger Woods by one stroke with 5 over. Johnny Miller won in 1973 with an outstanding 8-under, and in 1962 Jack Nicklaus, age 22, defeated Arnold Palmer in a playoff. Sam Parks Jr. won in 1935 in atrocious conditions with 11-over, the only player
to break 300. Wet or fine, the 2016 US Open looks like being interesting. Edward Stimpson, the Massachusetts amateur champion was a spectator at Oakmont in 1935. After watching a putt by Gene Sarazen roll off a green he went away and invented a simple device and method to accurately measure the speed of greens.. Hence the “Stimpmeter.” AFTER HIS PLAYERS Championship victory at TPC Sawgrass, World No. 1. Jason Day will be brimming with confidence, but Danny Willett, Jordan Spieth, and defending champion Ricky Fowler all missed the cut, which only goes to prove that you can go from Hero to Zero in this game in no time at all. The BMW PGA Championship celebrity Pro-Am will be held at Wentworth on 26th May. Sport and show business celebrities will join European Tour players, including Justin Rose, Danny Willett and Lee Westwood for a combination of golf and live music. Danny Willett will be paired with former England cricketers Michael Vaughan and Graeme Swann. Shane Lowry is paired, to his delight, with his rugby heroes Keith Wood and Paul O’Connell. Tim Henman – a scratch golfer since hanging up his tennis racquet, will provide the commentary. Super-group Mike and the Mechanics will be on stage in the Championship village for the Saturday evening concert, and top band Keane will be closing the show on the Sunday. (I’ve never heard of them either) The members of Wentworth have been battling the club’s new Chinese owner over plans to charge a £100,000 debenture fee and double annual fees to £16,000, in order to make Wentworth “The best private members golf club in the world.” At a heated meeting, the Wentworth Estate residents had asked: “Will the ordinary man be priced out?” Considering the average house prices on the Wentworth Estate I’d say the ordinary man had pretty well been priced out already. However, the company has backed down, although the members are still uneasy about the way the club is heading. Some of them are threatening to disrupt the BMW Championship. Watch out for retired colonels waving placards. Ernie Els has been hired to upgrade the course, which should help to take the poor chap’s mind off his putting. THE 1958 US OPEN winner Tommy Bolt (nicknamed Thunder) was
The infamous 100 yard long Church Pews bunker known for fiery outbursts and chucking his clubs about. During one round he came to the last hole with a chance to win and paced out the 160 yds of his shot to the green. “What do you think?” he asked his caddie. “Well boss, it’s either a two iron or a nine iron.” “Why?” said Tommy, “I was thinking of maybe a six iron.” “No sir,” said his caddie, “It’s gotta be either the two iron or the nine iron ‘cos they’re the only ones we got left.” WAYNE ROONEY’S SON Kai was recently presented with a miniature golf course for his 6th birthday, which included a 30 sq. metre artificial putting green and cost £7,000. EURONICS THURSDAY DART LEAGUE “THE ELECTRICAL SHOP” - BLUE LAGOON
T
hursday before last was the Euronics darts league presentation evening where the teams and their guests gathered to collect their trophies and catch up with each other at the end of this exciting season. Organised by the committee, a splendid night was had by all and it kicked off with a blind draw for a KO competition, 8 teams of 6 players drawn at random from players and guests from all teams. The winning team won a generous prize and the runners-up were also rewarded. Hopefully, after this the drinks were flowing. After a great buffet provided by Sue of Breakaways, the prize giving commenced and as you can see from the table above, there were some familiar names and a few surprises for those who had worked hard all season to earn the right to receive their trophies. Thanks to the teams, our sponsor Debbie Wright at Euronics, the committee and other interested parties, we had some fantastic raffle prizes. After all this excitement it was time to chill out with Music by Steve Clarke and some very good Karaoke from one of Massey's players, our very own Chairman Alan Nash, Vic Cooper, Lorraine Cox, and Rachel Broadhead both from PD Queens, The Committee would like to share the following thank you's from some of the league members. Sue and Ray Sanderson from the Porterhouse said, 'This is just a short message to say a big thank you to you all for all the work, time and effort you have put in this year to make the Euronics darts league the great success it has been. We appreciate it cannot have been easy to take over at very short notice the running of a league with multiple venues and hundreds of players. You clearly worked together as a great team in order to manage everything so well including, registration of venues and players, league and competition fixtures, sponsorship, media reporting, the occasional 'dispute' and much, much more ...... not forgetting of course, the wonderful final event of the year, the prize giving and social event at Breakaways. We hope all teams will agree it was a great fun evening and a smashing way to end the season. Once again, 'muchas gracias' from us all and we look forward to the start of another great darts season in the autumn.'

Paul Birtwhistle of theTavern said 'The season was good and all The Tavern Team enjoyed it. Good fun and nice for everyone to get together. Looking forward to next season.' Sonia Cooper of The Sporting Life said, 'What a pleasure it has been to be part of the Euronics dart league for the season 2015 to 2016, there were some ups and downs but on the whole has been

great. We would like to thank everyone who was involved with making the presentation night a great success and it was a great turnout. Can I also take this opportunity to send a big thank you to everyone who sponsored me for the charity cycle ride I am doing later this year for cancer charity through Cambodia and Vietnam. Any contributions on the night were greatly received. You will see throughout the next few months various events taking place locally to help me raise funds for this worthwhile cause.' Cheryl of Hub Hellraisers said: On behalf of the team, I would just like to say what a fantastic first season we have had playing in the league. We feel it has been run really well and the committee has done a brilliant job. We have met so many new people and made some lovely friends. The presentation night was brilliant, with something for everyone. We were overwhelmed at the cake prize we received as being at the bottom of the league, didn't expect that. It was so thoughtful and has made us feel very welcome as newcomers. We are all gutted it's over and are really looking forward to next season. You never know, we even may be able to play better darts!!! Thanks to everyone on the committee for all the hard work you put in. Also thanks to our hosts Simon and Cam from The Hub for letting us run riot.' From the Committee a big thank you to Lynn at Rolo's, Los Dolses for the tasty darts themed cake. The Committee would also like to say a huge thank you to Kevin Reardon for supporting us and putting our articles in the Leader and Euronics Electrical Shop, our main and faithful sponsor. A big thank you to the venues that hosted competition events namely, The Ale House, The Tavern, Hen’s Teeth, Porterhouse, Breakaways, Sporting Life & Massey’s. Thank you to all venues for the food they have laid on. All players for abiding by the rules and making it a great season! And finally, The committee: Gilly & Simone for their Weekly write-ups. Simone for managing the registration process and for her excellent Secretarial skills. To Debbie as Treasurer, collecting result cards, scanning and forwarding the results, new player fees etc. Alan for helping to steer the ship as any good Captain would do and Steph for his darts knowledge excellent hosting skills on the presentation evening. Finally, The Committee looks forward to seeing you all again next season but before then we shall be announcing the date of the next AGM some time in August, where we can discuss with you all how we move forward to the next season. We shall also be looking for new committee members and other venues who might like to join our successful league. Have a great summer.

It was the final round of our 5 Card Joker Eclectic Stableford competition on Monday with the trophy going to the player with the highest aggregate score taking their best score on each hole over 5 rounds. Lindsay Forbes had set a formidable target of 71 pts going into the final round having already submitted his 5 cards and there were only a handful of players with an outside chance of overhauling him. In the event it proved a sufficient lead although Mike Chapman almost made it falling one point short with a total of 70 pts to take second place overall. Tom Hardie was the other late runner returning with 67 pts to take third spot. The best three scores winning prizes on the day were as follows: 1st Doug Wright 42 pts 2nd Brian Dent 38 pts 3rd Rod Doel 37 pts It was one of our 'Majors' on Wednesday with a trophy on offer as it was Doug Wright's Presidents Day. This took the form of a individual stableford competition with prizes also available for Nearest the Pin on holes 6, 8 and 14. There were some tremendous scores being returned with no less than three players recording 39 pts having to be separated on a count back for second, third and fourth positions. However the top score of the day to win the trophy came from Mike Chapman who scored a magnificent total of 41 pts. A photograph of Mike receiving the trophy from President Doug Wright is shown above. The top four who will all be subject to the handicap secretary's axe were as follows: 1st Mike Chapman 41 pts 2nd Maria Oldenziel 39 pts (c/b) 3rd Terry Cullen 39 pts (c/b) 4th Hendrick

Torrevieja RBL Bowls ^Club The Legionnaires recently held their team's singles champion's game, the winner was James Wright who was taken all the way by Sharron Mitchell in an exciting final. Sharron was on course to win a close game when Jim put in a longer jack on winning the end and by the time Sharron got back into the game James had crossed the finishing line to win a hard fought final. Our photo shows Rita Hand in the centre having just presented James with the Rita Hand Trophy.

Plenty of thrills as Línea Directa Nationals enters second week As the Línea Directa National Bowls Competition reaches the semi final stages the organisers said that they could not have wished for a better first week with both the weather and the standard of bowling surpassing all expectations. In the Ladies Singles the major surprise of the opening 7 days saw the current champion, Indalo’s Jan Dando, go out at the quarter Final stage on Friday to Simone Morgan from Santa Maria, with the forCOMING mer winner of the FROM Malaga Champion of BEHIND Champions tournaSimone ment coming from Morgan 9-2 down to take the from match by 21-14. week’s semi Final in good form against Chris Brazier of Quesada. On home turf the congenial Geordie is the man to beat having only been narrowly edged out in the recent final of the Champion of Champions Competition held at Greenlands. It could be an all Emerald Isle final with the home club’s Dennis Rhodes meeting Martin Foulcer of Vistabella, in the other semi final The semi finals of the Men’s Pairs sees Dennis and John Pooley paired with Dave Blackie and Scott Malden while Harry Rhodes and Terry Morgan will meet Paul Parkes and Julian Pering. Ann Eagle also features in the semi final’s of the Ladies Pairs competition with her partner, San Miguel Club Secretary, Pat McKewan. Their opponents will be club colleagues Lin Miller and Chris Parsons. In the second semi the current champions are still very much in the hunt as Jacqui Johnston looks to make up for the disappointment of her exit from the singles with partner Mel Highland. But the twosome will not have their own way as they too face stiff opposition from Carol Broomfield and Peta Rhodes, also of Quesada. Jacqui and Mel also feature in the semi finals of the Mixed Triples where they are joined by Mel’s husband Colin, as the threesome attempt to see off Tenerife’s representatives, the Cathcart family. National team manager Graham will be partnered by brother Robert and mother Grace as the trio representing Teide Bowls Club, attempt to reach their first ever Nationals Final. By Pat McKewan The Spanish National Championships has taken place this week, with some fantastic bowling from all clubs. San Miguel had a large contingent of players, and unfortunately ended up playing against each other in all disciplines!!! This coming week sees the semi finals taking place Ann Eagle has dominated the games, getting into 3 semi finals (up to print), with the mixed pairs still to play. In the ladies pairs, San Miguel players Chris Parsons and Lin Miller play Pat McEwan and Ann Eagle (the other semi final has 2 Quesada teams playing against each other) so we are guaranteed a San Miguel v Quesada final!!! Ann Eagle had a great game in the singles winning against Jacqui from Quesada, she now plays Simone from Team Malaga who beat Carol Rudge SM in the first round and Pat McEwan SM in the second round. Pat reached 18 quite easily, then the wheels fell off and dropped 8 shots on 3 ends!! Ann has also reached the semi final in the triples with team mates Carl and Bob Nesbitt. Well worth a mention in the mens singles are Cliff Plaisted and Stuart Denholm who both reached the quarter finals. GOOD LUCK TO ALL OUR SEMI FINALISTS. Come along and support your players, it does make a difference!! Roll Up mornings are still carrying on, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays 0945 for 1015 start. WASPS are still proving popular on Wednesday afternoons, come along for 1.30, pay €5 and have a great friendly afternoons bowling. However, this gave the chance for the Annual EggCup Challenge to be played against our neighbours San Luis. The format is 6 rinks of Triples played home and away over consecutive Wednesdays. La Siesta, the holders, having the honour of hosting the first leg. The second leg will be at San Luis on Wednesday 25th at 10 a.m. The winners will be the team with the highest total of shots over both legs. Delving in to history it seems this will be the ninth year that the two clubs have played this challenge match. What a cracking start for La Siesta. Top of the list Ann-Marie Stevenson, Vic Moore and John Lincoln 29-3: followed closely by Ramsay Sinclair, Pat Moore and Johnnie Ryder 27-6: Barbara Cooper, Bill Jordan and Jack Cooper 19-10 and our other winning rink Dawn Taylor, Norman Adcroft and John Taylor 20-13. This game, as usual, was played in a fantastic atmosphere, very friendly, but competitive. Overall shots were 119 La Siesta - 65 San Luis. We know they will try very hard next week to overturn the deficit, but hopefully we will play just as well as today and retain the trophy for another year. Last Saturday the Hamper competition was won by the trio of Barbara Cooper, Jack Cooper and John Lincoln. This event is played every Saturday commencing at 10 a.m. sharp and is open to members, prospective members and non-members alike. Anyone interested in playing should turn up at the club by 9.45 a.m. Further info Jim & Lyn Hudson ( tel:- 690190523 )

‘MIKE PROBERT TALKS GOLF (Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services).
Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. ‘SEXISM AND GOLF’ Muirfield as a private male only members club on Scotland famous as being a venue for the British Open the last one being won by Phil Mickelson in 2010. They have hit the news for all the wrong reasons because the members have taken a vote and decided to continue to ban women from their golf course and as a result have been removed from the rota for future British Open Championships. The reasons that they gave were sexist in the extreme in that they believe that women players are not of a sufficient golfing standard and take too long to play golf. I saw something similar to this many years ago at a beautiful course in the Midlands called Little Aston while playing a county match when one of or players (who had got married the previous day) brought his new wife to caddy for him on route to the honeymoon but after numerous phone calls with the Chairman and President of the club she was allowed to sit in the car on the car park all day! I have also seen various golf courses with separate club houses for lady members who were not allowed to walk across the front of the clubhouse and only enter and exit from the rear of the clubhouse. Call me old fashioned but I thought that those days had long gone. Having lived here in Spain for 12 years I can assure you that you don't have to be female to play bad golf slowly! I am sure that none of this matters to those in power at Muirfield except perhaps for the ban from the Royal and Ancient but if any golfer of a suitable playing standard who has the money to pay the green fees and keep up with play should be allowed to play. Now I am sure that many lady players will be applauding this stance and many misogynistic men will think I have gone loopy but I am of the old school where golf is for everyone and not the privileged few. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. Alfie’s father has just received the Divison One supporter of the season from the English F.A for his sterling charity work in raising funds for little Alfie. This game against Manchester City Vets and ‘Red Card Roy’s Vets’ is a perfect opportunity for all you good people out there to help to raise funds for young Alfie.
Torrevieja RBL bowls team went out of their comfort zone and played the El Rancho petanca club, The Presidents on Tue. Bowls it was certainly not but the welcome we received from the home team ensured we will return, and I'm sure quite a few of our legionnaires bowlers could well be taking up this great game Our photo shows how much we enjoyed the day, many thanks to Ron & Pat Perrin for organising a great day and also organising a raffle in aid of the poppy appeal again soon.
The game is at the Deportivo Playa Flamenca with an 8.00pm kick off on Friday the 27th of May. After the match there will be a live auction and buffet at The Sporting Life bar in Los Dolses with a signed Joe Hart shirt, a signed Man City shirt, 2 match day tickets for a Man City game at the Etihad, two legends tickets for a tour of the Emirates stadium, as well as a signed Red Card
