The President of the Business Organisations de Murcia (CROEM), Jose Maria Albarracin has said that there are several companyâ€™s from the local business sector that are interested in becoming involved with the management of Corvera airport. He said that there is sufficient interest within the Murcia Community to ensure that the opening of the airport will go ahead, although he declined to provide further details. He also refused to answer when asked about a date for the opening of the airport saying that the Minister of Development is still drafting the tender specifications, although in an article in Spanish paper La Verdad he

was quoted as saying that there was no possibility of the airport opening before 2018. Albarracin added that further complications with the current lack of a National Government and changes within the Regional government were now further contributing to the delays but with the documentation for possible concessionaryâ€™s virtually completed, bids for the management of the airport would soon be put out to tender. However the tender for running Corvera airport is not realistically expected to be resolved until the end of the year at the very earliest and then, once agreed, the new management company will have to start with all the calibration flights and the certification process again. Then of course the Regional Government has to convince AENA to close San Javier, which is by no means yet agreed.

The result of the vote held last Friday in the Lower House of Parliament, with 170 votes in favour of the investiture of Mariano Rajoy as Prime Minister and 180 votes against, means it is necessary to continue negotiating to avoid a call for a third round of elections within a year. Before holding the second round of voting, Rajoy once again asked for the confidence of the Lower House, particularly of the PSOE, whom he asked to join up to the agreement reached with the political groupings of Ciudadanos and the Canary Island Coalition, and with the Navarre People's Union, Forum Asturias and the Party of Aragon - the last three of which the PP stood with in the last elections in a coalition - to reach a total of 170 MPs. He said asserted that he was offering the socialists "an agreement that is not rigid, but rather open to suggestions and modifications", and major State pacts on issues such as regional financing, pensions, education and gender-based violence, among other issues. "If they don't want any of these, if they wish to stand on the sidelines, they should at least allow a government to be formed in Spain". Similarly to in his investiture speech on 30 August, the acting PM reiterated that Spain urgently needs a government, with broad Parliamentary support, because the country is going through an exceptional situation and certain commitments exist that cannot be put off, which require a coherent response from all the groups. "I trust that

we can all reflect on the consequences of our decisions", he said. On this point, Rajoy underlined that the responsibility lies with everyone to avoid a repetition of the elections. "The ballot box in December cannot redress the absence of a Budget, the commitments breached with Europe, the financing of the regional governments or the damage to our outlook for growth and job creation. A price will be paid for not having a government, the cost will be high and this will fall upon all of us". "Spain needs a swift solution to tackle the pressing challenges, as well as to harness the positive outlook still offered by the coming years", concluded Mariano Rajoy.

Result of the voting At the end of the investiture session, and following the speeches from the different Parliamentary groups, the vote took place with a result of 170 votes in favour of the investiture of Mariano Rajoy to the Presidency of the Government and 180 votes against. According to the provisions of Article 99.5 of the Spanish Constitution and Article 172.2 of the Regulation of the Lower House, if no candidate has obtained the confidence of the Lower House within two months following the first vote of confidence (31 August), then new elections will automatically be called.

Unemployment up in Vega Baja Following several consecutive months showing a gradual reduction the number of registered unemployed increased in the Vega Baja during August by 781 people, compared with the previous month, and currently stands at 29,496. In the main summer months traditionally it increases the number of unemployed by the end of the summer season and the halt of activities such as education or construction. The greatest increases were in Industry (-362) and the Services sector (-328) followed by construction (-161).

Unemployment rose in 24 of the 27 municipalities in the region, falling only in Benferri, Guardamar del Segura and San Miguel de Salinas. By contrast Orihuela was the city which showed the largest increase with an addition 162 currently unemployed. By gender, of the 781 people who were added to the list by the Valencian Employment and Training Service (Servef), 528 were men.

Ritual killings investigated off Alicante coastline

Divers from the Guardia Civil have found three bundles of human bones wrapped in sheets off the coast at Peñón de Ifach in Calpe which they are now consider could be as a result of a ritual killing. The bundles were found last week at a depth of five to six meters and also included a skeleton and many other objects such as joss sticks and dolls. The Guardia were alerted after a first bundle was found by chance by a professional diver containing a nearly complete human skeleton thought to be between 30 and 40 years old, which is thought to have been dug out of the earth in recent weeks before being dumped at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea. The human remains, thought to be from three different skeletons, were taken to a forensic institute in Alicante for identification with results showing that the almost complete skeleton from the first bundle had been buried in the ground for 30 to 40 years before being thrown into the sea two or three days before it was discovered. The Guardia Civil say it, like the other bones, bore no signs of violence. Other objects found include a knife, bird feathers, tree branches, a bird skeleton, a bronze statuette and a toy doll, and have led investigators to suspect that they were used in rituals associated with

Santería, a syncretic religion that fuses elements of Roman Catholicism, African Yoruba mythology and native American beliefs. The theory is not going down well with followers of the religion in Spain. Quoted in the UK Guardian newspaper, Paulino Hernández, president of the Spanish Association of Afro-Cuban Santería, sounded weary as he explained that such rituals had nothing to do with his religion. “We bury people in our religion,” he said. “Our work – and the whole point of our religion – is to avoid problems and to protect people from getting ill in their daily lives. We would never, under any circumstance do anything like that.” Hernández called for the public – and the media in particular – to be patient and let the police conclude their investigation. The bundles also contained photographs and documents belonging to Spanish residents from several parts of the country. The documents include letters from the Tax Agency asking taxpayers for additional information regarding their income statements. No arrests have been made, but the investigation has now been moved to the region of Extremadura and other provinces where the individuals named in the tax documentation live.

Torrevieja says farewell to rescue ship SAR Mizen T

he mayor of Torrevieja, Jose Manuel Dolon, has presented a salt boat to the captain of the SAR Mizzen, Jorge Garcia, on behalf of the city, as a thank you for the service rendered by him and his vessel along the town’s coastline during the summer months. He described the presence of the rescue vessel in the port as "historic". During the ceremony, which was carried out on board the ship, the mayor expressed his gratitude to the captain and his crew "for the services they have provided to the town and its people throughout the summer." He said how delighted he was that, for the first time in its history, Torrevieja been entrusted with a resource as important as this, thanks to the confidence of the maritime authorities and the various efforts that have been made by the municipal government" . the Merchant Navy, Rafael Rodriguez Valero. Dolon described as "an exceptional opportunity" the ability to have a safety and rescue boat so readily available that has allowed Torrevieja to enhance its position as a “safe shipping point”, which the mayor said is essential when managing such important resources in the area as fishing, sport fishing, shipping and water sports and other a multitude of leisure and recreational craft in local waters. He also announced his intention to request a similar presence in subsequent years "in order to have a rescue ship permanently available on our coast." The SAR Mizzen has been docked at the Salt Pier for almost two months and is expected to leave in the coming days to continue it’s work elsewhere with its task of maritime rescue and emergencies.

PSOE denounce dumping on site of La Zenia Fire

Firefighters were called to a fire in calle Diego Ramírez on Wednesday evening where, together with agents of the Policia Local, they were able to rescue a man who was trapped in the building. He was subsequently taken by SAMU ambulance to the Torrevieja Hospital where he underwent treatment for respiratory symptoms of poisoning by inhalation of toxic fumes. The fire is said to have broken out in a large ground floor room which is said to be used by the residents of the building as a storeroom. Among the items found were a number of bottles of butane gas which a spokesman said could have caused a massive explosion. Fortunately the firefighters were quickly on the scene and able to contain the blaze shortly after arriving. Explosion of the butane cylenders could have resulted in a massive explosion The socialist councillor, Maria Garcia, has denounced the illegal dumping of waste in the area of the barranco located between the Villamartin and Montezenia developments ion the Orihuela Costa, where already there has been at least one fire this summer. Although there were no injuries, and the most recent outbreak was quickly dealt with, the councillor has demanded that the authorities in Orihuela take immediate steps to clean up the area and to monitor any further dumping, whether public or private, so as to avoid further hazards with another possible outbreak. She says that in the event of any further fire the accumulated rubbish could cause it to spread much faster.

Almost 25,000 local students return to school

Provisional data provided by the Councillor for Education, Begoña Cuartero, shows 12,500 students enrolled; of which there are 1926 infants, Primary 4657, Special Education 48, ESO 3242, High School 1070 and Vocational Training 1523.

Infant and primary schools students started or returned to their education in twelve public and one schools, a total of 1,847 students aged three to five years and 4,450 in Primary. High school students, ESO, Baccalaureate and vocational training, were distributed in five public and one private school.

Lemon Harvest delayed until end of month Farmers have postponed the harvesting of 980,000 tons of lemons until the end of September because of the current high temperatures.

The abnormally high temperatures have had a direct effect on the start of the harvest of the Primofiori lemon, leading to a delay of between two and three weeks from last year. The Association of Grapefruit and Lemon Professionals (AILIMPO) have said that for all practical purposes the harvest of the Primofiori lemon will begin during the last week of September with the produce available in the marketplace from October. They say that the Primofiori Spanish lemon will offer a product of the highest quality and freshness in contrast to the quality of lemons produced in the Southern Hemisphere.

At the IES Playa Flamenca however the start of school was delayed until today, Monday, because the centre has not received the relevant permission from the Government to start classes in the new classrooms.

The course will last for 6 months and in order to apply you must have a recent padron. Once registered, candidates will be tested and their ability assessed. The course will then be tailored to the level of the student. You will receive all information and access codes after which you will be able to access the system 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from PC’s, mobiles and tablets. Coursework can be carried out offline. There is a tutorial (video-virtual) for the system in a number of languages. CANINE RESCUE CONFERENCE

Last weekend over 50 volunteers and professionals from the Canine Search and Rescue Group, ECOS ByRMA, gathered in the town of Cox, together with representatives from the Specialist Group Canine Rescue in Catastrophes (GERCCMA). They came together from as far afield as Malaga, Seville and Cuenca, to participate in the Third Conference focussing on canine search and rescue methods for people trapped under rubble. Speakers at the conference included representatives of the Civil Protection, Red Cross, Security Forces and the Vega Baja Fire Service including Javier Luque Sanchez and Monica Rocamora Boschet who have plied their skills in many different disasters, including the recent earthquake in Ecuador where they saved a number of lives from under the rubble. During the conference the organisers carried out a mock rescue casa del Cultura Reina Sofía in Cox where teams located several people buried under the rubble.

CHS drive to clean riverbeds before autumn rains

he Hydrographic Confederation of Segura (CHS) has launched a campaign of cleaning local rivers, their banks and their beds before the usual onset of the heavy autumn rains with the agency allocating 120,000 euros toward the maintenance of the Rio Segura passing through the Vega Baja. Working under the authority of the Ministry of Environment, CHS say that the work of clearing and removing weeds in June began. Last week the cleanup was working along the river

near close to Rojales where equipment was removing the sediment that has accumulated on the river bank thereby increasing the water capacity that will be able to flow through the river. Work being carried out as part of the maintenance, upkeep, environmental recovery and restoration of river beds and banks includes the upkeep and protection of banks, removal of surplus sediment and debris, removal of unused structures (weirs, dams, etc.), construction of small structures such as deflectors and solids retainers as well as the selective clearing of vegetation.

that about 25,000 new cases are diagnosed in Spain every year, 90% of which, with early detection, can be cured. Except in advanced stages, the disease rarely produces any symptoms; hence the importance of the PSA test, which allows for the early detection.

An escape to the Island of Los Lobos It was time again for an escape to one of our neighbouring islands. This time, it was the turn of the small island of Los Lobos (Wolves Island), which is just a short boat trip from Corralejo in the north of Fuerteventura. There are no wolves on the island, since Los Lobos was named after the large number of monk seals that once lived there in peace. Man, in his usual style, decided to kill them all for food, their fat and skin when the island was discovered in the Fifteenth Century. Monk seals are now all but extinct in the area. The island became a supply base for the conquest of Fuerteventura in 1405, and until 1968, the only inhabitants of the island were the lighthouse keeper and his family who operated the lighthouse at the northern tip of this small island. I couldn’t help but wonder how his children managed to get to school each day, since the sea crossing was a little choppy. The island is now a natural park, one of the first in the Canary Islands, and is also designated as an area requiring special protection for the many species of marine migratory birds that frequent the island. None of the visitors that I travelled with seemed that interested in migratory birds, but headed off to one of the small beaches for a day of sunbathing and swimming instead. I was interested in finding out more about a statue of a very forbidding

looking woman close to the small quay. The statue was erected in honour of Josefina Pla who was a writer and professor, born on the island in 1909. She later moved to Paraguay in 1927 with her husband, where she developed an extensive and important literary career. Josefina received many awards and distinctions for her literary work for defending human rights and equality for men and women. Surprisingly, this small island was also of some importance to the Roman Empire. The University of La Laguna in Tenerife, is currently undertaking archaeological investigations on the island to discover more about the activities of the Roman Empire around two thousand years ago. The Roman Empire had control over most of mainland Europe and North Africa, but little has been known about its influence on the Canary Islands until recently. The island has revealed many Roman artefacts, including hooks and nails made from bronze and iron, plates, cups, lids for cooking pots and handles for kitchen and dinner utensils commonly used by Romans during this period. Archaeologists believe that these findings show that Romans visited this island, as well as other Canary Islands on a seasonal basis, rather than for permanent occupation. So why were they so interested? Designer fashion in clothing for men and women was as important during Roman times as it is now for the rich and important in society, but purple dye for clothes could only be made from red-mouthed rock shells or sea snails. However, these sea snails are difficult to find, but Roman explorers found them in abundance in the Canary Islands, where they are also known as carnadilla. Buildings found on Los Lobos appear to have been the processing plants to extract the purple dye from these sea snails that was then used for luxury clothing items that gave a sign of social distinction in

Roman Society. These purple dye factories date from the First Century BC to the First Century AD and were found at the south west of the island near to La Concha beach, which is also called La Calera beach. Archaeological findings such as these are important as they suggest that Roman influence on the Canary Islands could have been more important than previously thought, as historians had believed that the Roman Empire had mostly remained on mainland Spain and North Africa. Coastal regions of Morocco were used by the Romans as a centre for its purple dye industry, which would also link to the Canary Islands in the search for the hard to find, but valuable sea snails. My brief visit to the island was a wonderful experience and reminded me yet again of the rich variety that we enjoy from all the Canary Islands; each one is unique. Sadly, I didn’t get a moment on those much reported beautiful beaches, as I was far too busy taking photographs and exploring the island. Hopefully, I will return again very soon. Gardening club focuses on summer wildlife

his was the first meeting after the summer Joint Prize winners Mitch Fell break, and it was busy and very interesting and Roger Wagstaff with their one. Members had taken photographs of photos and prizes! wildlife in their gardens for the first competition of the season. There were photographs of snakes, insects and many other creatures. The joint winners were Mitch Fell, with a photo of a lizard, and Roger Wagstaff who had photographed a mantis. An avocado growing trial had been inaugurated earlier in the year, and some members had had success with this. Plants in varying stages of development were shown, and although the plants were small they were obviously healthy and growing well. Anna van Djik then gave a very interesting and thought provoking presentation on the subject of the “Senses of Plants”. Her research showed very interesting results. American University experiments show that plants do indeed have a variant of senses akin to our own. Plants can “hear” the sound of a caterpillar eating a neighbouring plant. This triggers the production of insecticides in the leaves, making them less attractive to hungry caterpillars. It has also been shown that playing classical music to plants accelerates their growth. Acacia trees can “ smell” the gasses given off by other acacia trees when their leaves are eaten by

Back after the summer holiday, the September meeting of ADAPT was very well attended and new members were welcomed. The speaker this month was member, Margaret Noden, who gave a brief history of her career as a journalist. From Junior reporter and eventually to Sub-editor, Margaret enjoyed her job and worked for various newspapers including the Daily Express, News of the World and Western Telegraph in the days when reports had to be given by telephone from a public ´phone box. Once she was given the position of Sports reporter, the only woman journalist to be covering football at that time. Margaret entertained members

with tales of stories which she had covered one of which was the sinking of a trawler off the coast of Scotland with the loss of 12 men, she had to interview some of the bereaved families in a professional manner and then she went home and cried herself to sleep. She rubbed shoulders with royalty and she met a lot of celebrities including Gareth Edwards which made her the envy of her male dominated office. Plants can also “see” light; they grow towards light sources so as to promote growth and photosynthesis. Plants are also able to detect touch as is demonstrated by the carnivorous Venus Fly Trap. The steps of an unwary insect will cause the leaves to close and trap it. It is only when the imprisoned insect struggles to escape that the plant secretes the digestive enzymes that allow it to consume its prey. Anna also explained the

ways in which plants can “taste”, growing towards sources of food and water. Plants are not at all helpless creatures, indeed their senses enable them to defend themselves very well. This area of research is relatively new. Future research will be most intriguing. Irene Davis, the Club’s Secretary hosted the meeting and also gave a fascinating talk about her “August Project”. Irene had asked at a local garage if she might have some old tyres! Over the month she painted these tyres in lovely vibrant colours, lined them and filled them with compost and plants to fill a corner of her terrace. The next meeting will be held on Monday 3rd October at Bar Trasgu, Calle Alicante 12, Formentera del Segura, at 2.15 for a 2.30 start. This will be a very special surprise meeting, and if you would like to attend please let the Club know, as exact numbers are needed to ensure that the surprise will work! Thirty works of art recovered in Torrevieja Alicante’s Civil Guard in Alicante has arrested a Spanish man aged 51, as it continues to investigate two others, a 37 year old woman of Brazilian nationality and another Spanish National on suspicion of several counts of theft, aiding and abetting, the illegal possession of weapons, crimes against cultural, historical and artistic heritage and fraud. Investigation first began after the allegation of the theft of nearly 400 bee hives on farms located in different municipalities of the Vega Baja. The thefts occurred in the towns of Formentera de Segura, San Isidro and Guardamar del Segura over the last 18 months. It would appear that the group were both selling the hives and claiming that they had been stolen, thus also profiting from fraudulent insurance claims to a value of approximately 21,000 euros. However, during the investigation, there were a number of additional offences that surfaced suggesting that they were involved in other shady deals. It appeared that one of the trio, from Almeria, was a builder. He also ran an antique shop, which could be used as a cover for the sale of stolen goods. Agents discovered that he was offering various pieces of art at knockdown prices for ??between 3,000 and 18,000 euros. Among the items for sale was a well known wooden carving of the Immaculate Virgin, dated between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, originating from la escuela Granadina de Alonso Cano The man was also involved in the robbery of a house in a town of Almería, which took place in 2006, from which several firearms had been stolen, so the agents suspected he could be armed and dangerous. On obtaining a warrant and searching the house of one of the accused, in addition to 171 beehives and 45 honeycombs, officers found about thirty priceless objects of art, among them paintings by Cecilio Plá, Chinese historical vases, elephant tusks measuring nearly two meters, a metre high bronze horse, an extensive collection of coins and a sword carved from bone. Many have since been moved to the Department of Culture of the Provincial Council of Alicante where they are being examined to determine their value. A further house search in the Orihuela village of Mudamiento uncovered further weapons including a Benelli rifle, a KRICO carbine, a Franchi shotgun and an automatic Walther pistol, all from the 2006 burglary of the house in Almeria.

September temperatures seem to have gone up and be hitting records following the lower than average August peaks, and so the 40 members and 5 guests who made it to La Finca found themselves baking under a somewhat oppressive heat. The course was set up long, especially the back 9, where two mighty hits were needed to reach stroke index 18 hole, into, as almost always, a breeze and teeing off from the whites. Greens were painfully slow and quite uneven following recent hollow tining and sanding and many putts were left short. However, even given these difficulties the scores were, across the board, quite reasonable with 3 players, Paul Tomlinson with the day’s best return of 39, Nick Spicer and Chris Hamblett beating their handicaps. The Gold category had the rather unusual situation of 4 of the top 5 players having to be separated by countback, the winner Mike Frankish just edging them out by a point. The day’s stableford competition results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 5th Brian Mulligan (33 on CB), 4th Mick Roscoe (33 on CB), 3rd Paul Fisher (35), 2nd Alan Gilbert (36), and 1st Chris Hamblett with 37 points. TMGS at Roda

It’s difficult to find a course without maintenance on the greens at this time of year, but Roda Golf we found in near perfect condition and with lower temperatures than earlier in the week it made for a very pleasant days golf. The format of the day’s competition was individual Stableford reflecting on the numbers it must have been the fact that it was a team game that was scheduled had put some members off from participating. Roda may well be on next year’s more frequent visit list, as some local courses are now increasing their green fees and it’s the local residents that will suffer most. Vistabella edge Montemar in Vera Moran Trophy A

team which included Martin Foulcer, the National Men’s Singles Champion, overcame Montemar in the Vera Moran Trophy played over 3 days last week at the Emerald Isle Bowls Cub in a ten-end final in which they didn’t have all their own way. Despite looking runaway winners midway through the match when they led by 6-1 Montemar, skipped by Bill Young, had pulled back to level the tie after 7 ends but their recovery was shortlived as Vistabella restored their lead and then pulled away to record a victory by 10-7. It was an eventful competition for Bill Young who took a tumble on day one requiring 17

stitches in a leg wound but being the trooper he is the former National team manager soldiered on to lead his team through to the tournament final for the 2nd consecutive year. One of the longest running events in bowling circles the competition was first held by the Moran family in 2005. This year it was contested by 16 teams of rinks with the proceeds being donated toward the EI Welfare Fund. Result: Vistabella (Martin and Mo Foulcer, Ian Kenyon and Bill Pain) beat Montemar (Bill and June Young, Ronnie Cairns and Alan Ashberry) 10-7. The trophy was presented by Emerald Isle proprietor Paul Moran.

CARP-R-US CLUB NEWS This week, the 8th September saw the start of the Autumn series of matches. It should have been held on the River Segura in Murcia, but as the last edict from the Murcia Fishing Federation stated that all carp had to be killed, and I have had no response to a recent E mail I sent them requesting an update concerning this, we moved the match to the Embalse de Pedrera. Winner on the day was Mark Foden with 9.84kg, second was Derek King with 1.42kg, third was Andy Foden with with 1.40kg and in fourth place was Tom Marshall with 1.22kg. The water levels are still going down fast. BENIARRES is down to 3.70% of water god help the fish stocks there, and PEDRERA is down to 34.5% and falling fast. Round two of the series will be

Emerald Isle Bowls Club By Elwyn Morris Mon to Wed was taken up by 8 opposition clubs and 8 EI rinks playing for the Vera Moran trophy after 3 excellent days bowling the eventual winners were Vistabella. You can see the report across. Although the weather has been a tad warm our SAPS on a Saturday has been well supported. As the weather cools down we will hopefully see the numbers back up to normal totals, still great value at 5 Euros for 2 hours of coaching, for anyone to come along, with shoes and bowls supplied.

For those people who haven’t visited, or looked on our website recently and seen the photos of the opening of our beautiful new green: we would like to remind everyone that San Luis is open for business once more. Our first big event is next weekend, Friday 16th- Sunday 18th, when we host the SABA summer competition semi finals and finals. Play starts 10:30 on each day so please come along and support the players who have worked so hard to get to this stage. On Sunday 25th (following the opening ceremony at San Miguel on Saturday afternoon) the Valencian Championships begin with play at San Luis, San Miguel and La Siesta. All the semi finals and finals will be held at San Luis with the closing ceremony on October 8th. Our popular chicken drives have re-started on Wednesday and Sunday afternoons (1:30/2:00) and Vic’s hamper is currently on Tuesday and Saturday mornings (9:30/10:00) except, obviously, when the competitions are running. We look forward to seeing you at any of these events or later when the league matches start again; maybe it will have cooled down a little by then! Dismal week as rock bottom Torry suffer ‘double whammy’ The Torrevieja line up at Olimpic

ot only were Torry faced with an uphill struggle against a side that was sitting pretty near the top of the table, that hadn't conceded a goal all season, and were nailed on favourites to make a quick return to div 2b, but they had also received earth shattering news from the Valencian FA. Having dismissed Almoradi´s appeal that Torry played an illegible player in the opening 3-2 victory at Vicente Garcia Stadium, they then performed a u turn and awarded the result to Almoradi. This verdict must be gut wrenching to not only the players that fought hard to achieve the result, but the supporters and club officials must be pretty damned unhappy as well. Recriminations on who was to blame are now totally irrelevant, but one thing´s for sure - this season is an uphill struggle from now on. Following this humiliating 3-0 drubbing, in which Gabi Correa´s men failed to record a single shot on target, Torry now find themselves firmly rooted to the foot of the table with zero points, and a goal difference of minus 10. Senor Correa must be a worried man, for after only 4 games, his position must be in jeopardy, for at the last home match ex

manager Pedreno was seen sitting with the club president and directors. I wonder why that may be? As for the game, well Torry were poor, no they were atrocious!! Multiply changes were made from the previous weeks drubbing, but alas this did not include the impressive Costa, who during the week suffered a horrendous Cruciate ligament injury on the training ground. The first half didn't really get to life until the 16th min, when Moscardo unleased a rocket shot from the edge of the box which Torry Keeper Marcano did well to punch away. Unfortunately it didn't take long for Olimpic to go ahead, for on 26 mins a defensive error by Luis Carlos allowed Marc Cosme an opening to shoot past Marcano from the edge of the box. On 33 mins, the same player faced with a 1 on 1, thankfully shot just wide of the far post from a similar position. Olimpic continued in the same vein in the 2nd half, but on 73 mins, Torry had a glorious chance

to equalise. An exquisite cross from the right by Vicente, found Carrasco unmarked no more than 5 yards from goal, but alas his hurried shot spooned over the bar with the goal at his mercy. Two minutes later, another defensive mix up, this time between Martin and Luis Carlos, allowed Olimpic sub Juanma a chance which he took with aplomb. With 10 mins to go, Martin allowed Corbalan an opportunity from which Marcano made a great

save, but from the very next attack, a right wing cross was superbly converted by Moscardo, putting the game out of Torry´s reach. Torry have a midweek home fixture at Nelson Mendela Stadium on Weds 14 Sep, ko 6.30. Because of an odd number of teams in div 3, next weekend is Torry´s turn to put their feet up, and watch the telly, as they have a free week.

The Plaza Golf Society at Lo Romero Golfers delight at Lo Romero yesterday. 30 players enjoyed the fantastic day out, with new members joining the greatest society about. The winner of the 2’s was Simon Lee claiming the 60€ pot. Nearest the pins was sponsored by Richard and Janet Allen, Thank you, Simon Lee won hole 5, Dave Cornforth hole 7 and newest member Colin Wilson hole 12, all collected 12.50€ bar tab for The Alehouse. Well done lads. Our best lady was Shirley Cain. Who won herself a bottle of wine and our lowest scoring golfer of the day was Adrain Smith who took a bottle of wine to drown his sorrows. Richard Allen won the football card winning 50€ Galaxy Golf Voucher. Our guests played well with A Harris coming in 3rd with 28 points, William Miller 2nd on count back with 28 points and Frank Case winning the guest category with 31 points. All collecting wine and balls. Our members played excellent with an impressive

score from our captain Simon Lee 34 points with his handicap of 11 collecting 40€ cash, John Proctor with a fantastic score of 34 points with his handicap of 21 coming in second on count-back collecting 55€ cash and Sean Robinson with his handicap of 18 scoring an incredible 35 points collecting 70€ cash. All had fun and frolics at The Alehouse after with DJ Snoopy banging out some tunes. Next game is Sunday 18th September at Villamartin 10:12 draw to take place Wednesday night. See you there.
