The body of a 32 year old woman who had been missing for over 2 months was found in Torrevieja on Wednesday. Discovered by the Guardia Civil sealed up in a meter room, in the stairwell of her apartment in Calle Ramon y Cajal, the woman, a Chilean national, was identified as Johana Bertina Palma Gonzalez, a mother of two children aged 12 and 5, who was first reported missing on 13th June. Following the discovery of the body, which was said to be in an advanced state of decomposition, the Guardia arrested the woman’s husband as the main suspect in her death saying that everything indicates that the finding is a homicide. According to local government
spokesman, Juan Carlos Valderrama, the husband is subsequently reported to have admitted his guilt saying that he simply pushed her during a heated argument and as she fell she hit her head. In searching for the woman the Guardia had previously questioned many of the residents of the property and following reports of a strong odour emanating from a stairwell they decided to look at it a little more closely. It was at that point they discovered the body buried in small alcove underneath the stairs which houses the water boiler. The body had been pushed to the back of the small room where it had been covered in bricks and cement in a crude attempt to seal it off. It was said to have been found in an advanced state of decomposition. Continued on Page 2

The Guardia were assisted by both the Policia Local and Torrevieja firefighters in removing the body which was subsequently taken to the Forensic Institute of Alicante where a post mortem is currently being carried out.

After Johana was first reported missing her mother, Rosario Gonzalez, moved from Chile to Torrevieja to assist with the search where she made dozens of appeals on Facebook and on local sites for help in finding her daughter, the most recent of which was last Saturday, on the 2 month anniversary of Johana’s disappearance. She said that she received little help from her husband, 37 year old John Charlie LT. Many government authorities in the area held up to 3 minutes of silence both in memory of Johana and as a protest against gender violence. In Torrevieja the mayor, José Manuel Dolón, accompanied her mother as well as a number of relatives and friends, saying 'everyone was worried while Johana was missing and unfortunately it has come to a sad and dramatic end'.

There was 3 minute’s silence also held outside the Valencia Palau de la Generalitat where the vice president of the Valencian Government and Regional Minister for Equality, Monica Oltra, said that the death of Johana is "a blow to the entire society." She urged "break the silence where male violence occurs" and denounce the attackers, who she said "have the whole of society against them." The death of Johana raises to 29 the number of women killed through gender violence in Spain so far in 2016, four women less than during the same period last year.

PP accuses government of abandoning 'Pascual Flores'

councillor Jose Eduardo Gil Rebollo accused the current Torrevieja council of abandoning the schooner the 'Pascual Flores' saying that they are simply allowing it to rot away in its current dock in the city's popular marina. The councillor said that he requested the town hall to provide him with copies of the ship’s navigation and seaworthy certificates on 4 July but he got no response. He repeated his request 3 weeks later and was referred to the department of works. When eventually finding someone in authority who would respond to his requests the councillor said that he soon realised that all of the seagoing certificates necessary for the ship to leave its present location were out of date and this despite the 20,000 euros spent on a major refurbishment programme in 2015 in a shipyard in Algeciras, where the work was carried out by some of the greatest experts in the country, tradesmen who are among the best in the world in managing these boats. Gil Rebollo said that he was extremely upset by the situation that seems to have arisen around the Torrevieja schooner saying that there are a great many people in the city who care about it’s future. “It is part of the city’s history and it deserves
much better” he said explaining that the schooner could also function as a mobile tourist office for Torrevieja and, in theory, it could promote the city by travelling all over the world. However a number of Torrevieja’s politicians have criticized the logic of keeing the schooner suggesting that the whole upkeep of the ship has already cost the city far too much from which the people are getting very little, if no, benefit. “We have already spent over 5 million euros on it’s upkeep and preservation’ one councillor said, “It is probably worth around 6 million and we need to recover the money it has cost the city, therefore it should be advertised for sale and if somebody wants to buy the boat they should be allowed to do so”. So, for now it is uncertain what the future of this controversial ship might hold. The choices are to invest in it’s repair to re-establish it as a seaworthy boat so that it can go back to sea, to cruise the ‘world’ and promote the city of Torrevieja, or simply retain it in Torrevieja Marina as a museum, either in or out of the water. Either way, whatever the solution that is finally adopted, there will be a need to spend a great deal of additional public money to keep it afloat and avoid this magnificent ship ending up in the seabed.

La Mata vigil for ‘Tears of San Lorenzo’ M
ore than 200 people gathered in the La Mata Park last Thursday night to watch the famous Perseid meteor shower which made its appearance overnight into the early hours of Friday morning. The glorious Perseidsm which peak every year between approximately Aug. 8 and Aug. 14, is also referred to as St. Lawrence's "fiery tears." The activity in the centre began earlier in the evening with a short talk about the park and an indication of what the observers might see. Then, after a walk around the area, participants had a picnic under the moonlight in the heart of the park. At about eleven o'clock the group began observing the shooting stars while members of a local astronomy society offered explanations of the sky, the constellations and the phenomenon that they could

The Board has said that it wishes the additional funding to be spent in 3 specific areas. There will be 70,000 euros made available for investment in the modernization and improvement to the infrastructure of a number of municipal mar-
kets in the province, in the townships of Albatera, Cox, Dolores, Redován and Rojales The grants will target the areas of carpentry, plumbing, painting, cleaning and electricity. It will also be used to carry out the repair of doors, windows and roofs for the municipal markets uin addition to a number of promotional activities. In addition, the Provincial Government will work with the towns in promoting trade fairs and other events that will stimulate the economic and business activity of municipalities and spread the excellence and the quality of its local products. In total the Council will invest a total of 29,403 euros to be distributed among almost all localities. The Board has also approved a grant of 13,926 euros to be shared among 89 municipalities of the province as well as the smaller local farmers market in Jesus Pobre close to Denia, where the money will be used for economic promotion.

Almost a third of all Valencia’s vehicles over 15 years old The average age of all private vehicles in the Valencia Province is said to be 11.5 years, according to data provided by the Spanish Association of Automobile and Truck Manufacturers (ANFAC). However the figures go on to say that 26.8% of the cars on our roads are older than 15 years of age. ANFAC says that the data is "troubling." The study says that there is a "high rate" of old vehicles on our roads which are both "a risk to road safety and to the atmosphere, because of the increased emissions that they discharge." Vehicle manufacturers says that reducing the average age of the fleet is "a priority" while ANFAC say that it is becoming increasingly necessary "to accelerate the withdrawal from circulation of older cars." New vehicles offer highly advanced technologies in relation to the reduction of accidents," they explain. In this regard, the association of Car Manufacturers points to the need to create plans that "promote faster fleet renewal. Other arguments made by the association are with regard to the environmental impact posed by emissions from old cars. They say that "a car today emits 30% less CO2 than one that is 10 years old." They also point to the money saving element for
drivers as being one of the determining factors. "The new vehicles consume 30% less fuel." These decreased costs coupled with efficient driving can save drivers 900 euros per year.
The figures show that currently, of the 2,786,881 vehicles registered in the Region, 746,209 have more than 15 years of age. Nationwide the average age of cars is 11.7 years.

Demands to reopen Pilar Watchtower T
he Association of Historical and Cultural Heritage of Pilar de la Horadada was busy this weekend collecting signatures in Torre de la Horadada, in the hope of getting the 16th century watchtower reopened to the public. The campaign will run through the rest of the month collecting support as well as informing residents, holidaymakers and visitors about the watchtower and asking for their signatures which will be sent on to the regional administration. The Association has made the request to Pilar council on previ-
ous occasions but all have been denied. They want the watchtower opened to the public on pre arranged number of occasions every month. The watchtower which was built in 1591 actually gives its name to the town. It was constructed on a rocky outcrop which just out into the sea at the southernmost edge of the town and now overlooks the local marina and the barracks of the Guardia Civil. It’s original purpose was as part of the coastal communication system, to warn local residents of approaching raiders and pirates from the North African coast.
Hopes for new Government Spain's acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy got the green light from his conservative People's Party (PP) to negotiate with centrist rival Ciudadanos with the aim of forming a government, he said last week. PP leaders met on Wednesday to discuss a six-point package of political reforms that Ciudadanos had set as a pre-condition of its support for Rajoy's bid for a second term. "Spain needs a government right now," Rajoy told a press conference after the meeting.

Orihuela’s Councillor for the Environment, Miguel Angel Fernandez (PP), said that the procedure is carried out every two years and will involve 3,000 drains - 749 units in the city, 770 in the districts and 1,411 on the Orihuela Costa. He hopes that the work will go some way to ensuring that the drainage systems are able to handle the heavy rainfall that we will inevitably see at the end of the summer. Hidraqua say that, in parallel to this work they are also carrying out maintenance tasks on the two tanks –storm reservoirs located in the Industrial area Puente Alto and La Zenia, as well as local pumping stations and storm water collectors.

Illegals intercepted off Alicante coast
T
he third boat in a little under two weeks was intercepted by the Guardia Civil on Tuesday with eight Maghrebi immigrants on board. The boat, a new patera of about four metres in length, was stopped half a mile from Cabo de las Huertas off Alicante. Two of the occupants were moved to a local hospital for treatment of hypothermia and concussion, having first told immigration officials that they had been three days at sea. However, specialists from the Civil Guard suggested that the involvement of a mother ship which releases these small patera vessels a few miles from the provincial coast, particularly in view of the fact that the boat intercepted on Tuesday was not even equipped with an engine. This is the third such vessel that has been intercepted recently after similar vessels, also containing illegal immigrants, were stopped off the island of Taberca and the coastline of Torrevieja.
On this occasion the boat was found to contain eight males between the ages of 17 and 41 although the youth will be subjected to medical tests, since it is common for young people to lie about their age, hoping to obtain more favourable legal treatment. The boat was first spotted at around 8 am by a sailing boat, which provided the first aid and informed the emergency services. One of the immigrants was in the water when it was first sited. He and his companions were taken to the offices of the Civil Guard in the port of Alicante, where they received assistance from Red Cross. Also on Tuesday the Guardia spotted an inflatable boat about 4 meters long with 6 men board, apparently of Moroccan origin, in Almeria waters, about 23 nautical miles south of the island of Alboran. Later, in the same vicinity a second inflatable boat, 7 meters long, was intercepted carrying 44 people of sub - Saharan origin, 10 of which were women.

Horse death linked to rare disease Lilly at the Horse Hospital in Alicante where she was being treated.
A seriously ill horse that died in Alicante this month after suffering a baffling series of injuries and illnesses could have been suffering a rare disease never before seen in Spain. An autopsy has revealed the two-year-old mare named Lily, who was cared for by the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre, had hard mineral lumps like stones in her neck, heart and lungs – a sign of systemic calcinosis and calciphylaxis. It is believed that only five cases of the illness have ever been recorded in America. Veterinarians at the Hospital Veterinario San Vicente, who treated Lily, have preserved the stones in formaldehyde to be sent to the University of Córdoba when it reopens in September for further specialist analysis. "We are obviously devastated to lose this beautiful young member of our rescue centre family, particularly after the loss of her mother only two years ago,” said Easy Horse Care co-founder Sue Weeding. “But we hope that Lily's death will help to bridge some of the knowledge gaps in equine medicine, and learnings from Lily will one day help other horses."

Protesters drive sheep through la Finca Ferrís

British Pilgrims rescued Spanish firefighters have rescued two Britons who spent five days in the open, drinking from ditches and animal troughs, after getting lost while trying to walk the Camino de Santiago pilgrims’ route. The pair, who have not been named, set off from Saint-JeanPied-de-Port at 4pm last Friday, but somewhere along the 20mile (30km) trek, they got lost.

ver a hundred and fifty protesters followed a flock of sheep through la finca de Ferrís last weekend, in an effort to voice their disapproval at a number of actions being carried out by the landowner. In an action organised by the group “Salvemos Lo Ferris” (Save Lo Ferris), they say that the owner has gone too far following the construction of 'the wall of shame 'that was erected a few weeks ago and now divides a section of the
coastal strip. Among those who attended the protest were the Councillor for Citizen Participation, Victor Ferrández, Izquierda Unida and the president of the Alicante Agrarian Association of Young Farmers (ASAJA Alicante), Eladio Aniorte, who showed his full support to the protest saying that it is "the only stretch of coastline and natural beauty left for people to enjoy, following the constant abuses to the area by constructors and developers.” He claimed that part of the wall is built on public l a n d , encroach-
ing on a cattle trail that starts in Punta Prima and goes all the way along the coast to Cabo Cervera and then inland to La Mata lake. Sadly, of the 3 beaches failing to make the grade, one is in Torrevieja where Playa del Cura only managed a “good” rating, as was the case for Calas de Rocamar in Pilar de la Horadada, but at least neither of these beaches were as bad as the one “adequate” water quality graded beach, Mareny de Vilxes in Sueca. Piar de la Horadada are possibly considering themselves lucky that the inspection wasn´t carried out this week as red flags have been flying on the playa de la Higuericas in Torre de la Horadada since Thursday after a spillage caused by a burst sewage pipe. Fortunately the matter was dealt with fairly rapidly as staff from Pilar de la Horadada’s Department of the Environment were quickly on the scene following reports of the collapse of the sewage pipe causing the raw sewage to spill, They were joined by employees from the municipal water service Acciona and the Department of Works, initially identifying the problem and then repairing the damaged pipework so that bathers were quickly able to use the beach once again. A spokesman said that the likely cause of the problem was the increasing summer population leading to the increased use of piped water. The Rojales Councillor for Social Welfare, Civil Protection and Public Safety, Lourdes Lopez, has announced details of an agreement signed on Thursday between the Rojales council and the Department of Corrections at the Ministry of
Interior, whereby persons convicted of minor offences can serve their sentences by working with the Local Civil Protection Group on assignments and projects for the benefit of the community. The first two offenders have already joined the scheme and are working during their weekends under the supervision of the local head in Rojales, Mari Carmen Ramirez. This pioneering initiative extends to people convicted of minor offenses not only in Rojales, but also in other nearby municipalities. “The work is carried out for the benefit of the community the final aim of which is the rehabilitation and social reintegration of the individual into local society,” said Lopez. “Imprisonment is not always the most appropriate measure in the case of minor offences and this new alternative, whereby the individuals carry out community work on local projects, is a much better alternative.”

rexit continues to create anxiety for many expats planning to move to Spain and other European countries. One of the regular issues that people write to me about is health care, and particularly for those under state retirement age. Although I don't have any more information about what will happen to health care in Spain after Brexit, I am concerned that many expats moving to Spain are being coerced into purchasing private health insurance when there really is no need. It is not unreasonable for Spain to ensure that newly arrived expats have the means to support themselves when living in the country, and this requirement includes health care. Indeed, evidence of a health insurance policy, as well as a number of other criteria are now sensibly required before newly arrived expats are given residential status. However, it appears that many banks are now using this requirement as an opportunity to sell expensive health cover to their clients, instead of advising them of the cheaper alternatives that are available. Expat websites, estate agents, lawyers and other information sources for expats are also guilty of pushing private health insurance, simply because they receive a hefty commission for each sign up. Even some furniture stores, that are popular with expats, are now interrogating their customers about their health care provision. Whilst I have nothing against private health insurance, apart from clarity about premium increases and cover, as we get older, it is not the best option for everyone, and certainly not for those with existing medical conditions. My preference is to go with Spain's National Health Service that is, in most cases, excellent. On occasions, when

Torrevieja PP want increased security for shoppers
C
ouncillor Agustina Esteve, appeared at a press conference last week where she asked for the creation of a specific security service to stamp out the problem of illegal sales, banned trade, theft and robbery on beaches, in markets, commercial centres and suchlike, where there is a notable influx of people who are using or congregating in the area. The PP councillor said that Torrevieja should be ashamed at the amount of illegal trade that is being totally ignored in the city and to which the authorities are turning a ‘blind eye.’ Areas such as the neighborhood of Acequión, the district of San Roque, the beaches of Los Náufragos, El Cura, Los Locos, La Mata and many other sites that
have become a hotbed for such vendors who seriously harm the operation of commercial centres, bars, restaurants and hotels by selling refreshments, cocktails, mojitos and offering for sale cheap products and massage services on the beaches without any sort of control. She said that she will be submitting her proposal which she feels better addresses the issue of safety in urban and commercial areas at the next meeting of security coordination committee in Torrevieja. She says that she has the full support of traders, many of whom have offered suggestions and advice that they would like to see implemented in order to ensure safety in their establishments.

Police in night time rescue of 7 year old on sinking jetski
Two members of the Policia Local rescued three occupants of a jetski on Wednesday evening one of whom was a seven year old boy. The three had got into difficulty when their craft broke down at about 9pm in the evening and in little or no light. At the time there were no lifeguards on duty and the nearest coastguard patrol was approximately six kilometres away. The alarm was raised by a member of the public who said that he was watching from the beach of La Mata and Cabo Cervera and he could see a small craft that was in trouble and drifting out to sea. The quick thinking officers arrived at the scene
and immediately turned the headlights of their patrol vehicle toward the sea in order to locate the jetski One of the policemen, with skills in first aid, then jumped into the water in an attempt to make his way toward the jetski. His partner, without losing sight constantly moved the patrol car so as to keep both his colleague and the jetski illuminated in the main beam. The agent initially pulled the child to safety buoyed by the lifejacket that he was wearing, before returning to the jetski to help the other two, one of which was a 21-year-old who was completely exhausted by his attempts to reach the shore
No likelihood of the Municipal Theatre re-opening anytime soon
T
here still appears to be no resolution with regard to the reopening of the Municipal Theatre in Torrevieja with the mayor, José Manuel Dolon, now saying that it will cost taxpayers a further 251,676 euros for work to be carried out prior to safety officers issuing the necessary certificates. Until that is done, the theatre, which originally cost over 11 million euros when it was first built 12 years ago, an overspend on the budget even then of nearly 6 million euros, will remain closed, as it has been now for very nearly a full year. The mayor said that he received the information on Wednesday from the architect of the building who said that he will need that amount to address the current safety deficiencies and to pay unpaid licence fees. The architect has visited the building on several occasions, to see firsthand the deficiencies that need to be rectified s that a solution can be found that allows the theatre to reopen and to operate within the law. His report, which is more than three pages, lists all of the deficiencies that the City will have to overcome if they want to get the auditorium back in use. The mayor made yet another visit to the theatre
where he said that he continues to lose sleep over the problem to which he cannot see an early solution. The councillor for culture Alejandro Blanco had earlier anticipated the theatre reopening in June, but funding for the work to legalise the building was unable to be found. It was first closed in September as if didn´t have the necessary license to operate, nor did it meet the minimum safety requirements, despite being allowed to risk the safety of thousands of people using the facility when the previous government ignored the rules on safety and licensing. The mayor said that it was only open because it was the time when the cronyism of the PP extended all the way through the provincial government to the Generalitat and Madrid. The mayor highlighted the fact that had an accident occurred within the building whilst it was in use at that time, there would have been a very serious problem, Both the council website and the Torrevieja tourism site still describe the theatre as being one of the most important architectural works in Spain despite the fact that it is said to be unsafe to enter.

Don’t eat chocolate during the round (avoids sugar highs). Don’t eat heavy foods like burgers & hotdogs (they cause lethargy). Don’t eat late meals (allow time for food to settle before you lie down). Don’t eat desserts (replace these with fruit or frozen yoghurt). In general limit the amount of your sugar and salt intake. Remember that a little bit of what you fancy does you good and a little bit of fat helps you maintain your weight but don’t overdo it and get carried away. Nobody can tell you what to eat but we are all aware that not all foods are healthy for you. You will decide when the time is right for you to eat healthier but for the majority of people they feel better for it and on the golf course you will discover that you do not tire as easily late in the round and that your thinking will remain consistent and clear for the whole round. CARP R US CLUB NEWS On Thursday the 18th of August the Clubs anglers fished round 3 of the 4 x 4 hour Mini series for the month of August, on the Sweet water canal in Guardamar. This was the Clubs first visit to this venue for some time and all the anglers caught with no dry nets. The winner of the match was Pete Kerr with 8.1kg using pole and maggot. Second was Geoff Tempest with 2.48kg using feeder and maggot. In third place with 2.08kg using pole and bread was Roy Dainty and in fourth place Mark Foden with 1.76 kg using feeder and corn. The next and last match of the series will be fished on the El Bosquet complex on Thursday the 25th of the month. Pegs at
8.00am and fishing from 9.00 to 1.00pm. All of these matches are a walk off. The next Quiz night will be on Tuesday the 30th of August, starting at 7.30pm. SAN MIGUEL GOLF SOCIETY AT LA SERENA For the second week in a row SMGS members and guests travelled to Murcia’s coastal area, this week to play the very watery (only 16 holes where water is a feature!!), La Serena. With good course conditions overall, although greens a little slow which is expected this time of year to protect them from the sun. Unfortunately because of the time of year and the intense heat there were only 19 members and 2 guests so reducing each category to the first three placings. The day’s stableford competition results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 3rd William Fenn (33 on CB), 2nd Norman Mcbride (33 on CB) and 1st Marge Birtwistle with 35 points. Silver Category: 3rd Eve Pettersson (31onCB), 2nd Tony Smale (31on CB) and 1st with 34 points Phil deLacy, his 3 weeks of sailing must of done his golf the world of good. TMGS at VILLAMARTIN GS on 17 August Teeing off at 9am you could be forgiven for thinking that we would not be playing in the heat of the day, how wrong can you be. The forecast was a yellow alert for extremely high temperatures and it proved to be the case because by 12 noon it was hovering around 36 degrees, unfortunately the scores were not so hot. Only 2 players managed to better their par but most were below 30 points. Some of our Vikings members arrived for a short raiding trip and managed to make their mark on the podium, obviously the weather in Norway must have been too cold for them. The course was in good condition although some of the fairways could have done with a haircut. In assn with Sapphire Properties and Costa Blanca Green Fee Svces For this months meeting the Spanglish Golf Society and a group f 26 players visited the established course at Roda taking advantage of the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services. The weather was beautiful and with temperatures just a little lower than normal and with the usual Levante breeze in the afternoon The competition today was an individual stableford and the winning scores on the day were as follows: 1st – John Goulder – 38 points 2nd – Andy Drinkall - 37 points 3rd – Ray Muttock -37 points 4th – Joe Tiernan - 36 points 1st Category B – Cameron Cawte - 30 points Best Front Nine – Joe Tiernan – 18 points

The Medbar Golf Society El Raso We are a new society which started up at the beginning of the year. We have had a few successful outings, one per month, and the latest one being at font de llop on 11th august. La Siesta Internal Competition Finals
This very well supported annual event, which was held at La Siesta on 12th and 13th August, produced some very close and exciting games. In the Drawn Out Pairs Irene Mangan and David Davies were Winners whilst the runners up were Jean Hepehi and Robert Logan. The Summer Singles was also
won by David Davies against Sheila Chorley. The Bryan Rourke Trophy was won by Alex Morrice and Irene Magan, the runners up were Bill and Sue Jordan. The Mr and Mrs Trophy was won by Penny and John Porter, the runners up were Dawn and John Taylor.
Ruby’s G.S. celebrate Billy’s Birthday Bash To celebrate reaching the ripe old age of 70 our treasurer sponsored this month's fun day, and a lot of fun was had by all and with glamour, treats and shot's being provided by Bills wife Monica, and Carol our hostess from Rayz bar all was set for a great day. It all started with our sponsor being the first to tee off, with a great audience watching and a loud cheer Bill proceeded to drive his first shot into the bushes before disappearing down the fairway with balloons and bunting flying. The competi-
tion for the day was a two ball scramble and with the course in great condition and the weather fair everyone enjoyed the day. The prizes were sponsored by Bill and the recipients were, nearest the pin on the par 3's Marc Doherty and George Marshall Deane, the scores were very close with only a few points deciding the outcome but the overall winners were Colin Fear and Nigel Wright with Harry Evans and Theresa Wright coming second. Bill also did
a blind draw with prizes for all that had played and not won anything. A big thank you to Bill and Monica for sponsoring the day. A Trilby Challenge on the 17th August 2016 was held at the Roda Golf Course. On a very fine and very warm morning 32 members teed off. The course was in good condition with a pleasant round of golf. The competition was played in the Texas Scramble format with eight teams of four players and the scores recorded are as follows:Nearest the pin on the 2nd hole was Norman Dobson Nearest the pin on the 7th hole in was Tommy Malcolm Nearest the pin on the 11th hole was Pete Gillespie Nearest the pin on the 13th hole was Tony Jones The winning team captain´s were: In 1st place Ian Johnstone ( Roger, Nico, and Digger) making up the four with a score of 104 ( winners of the Trilby Challenge. In 2nd Place Mike Heighway (Tam, Norman Dobson and Ken Styan) with a score 98 points. The individual stableford winner of the Golden Trilby with a magnificent score of 39 points was Ian Johnstone. A very good day in pleasant company which was celebrated at the Lime Bar ( 19th Hole) with the presentation followed
by drinks and refreshments. Thanks to Tony Jones and Committee for organising the
event also to the Lime Bar staff for arranging the meal and the ladies for selling the football draw.

By Pat McEwan The last game of the 2 Wood Triples has taken place, results were Jan Allen, Sandy Knight, Eileen McLaren winning 13-12 against Carol Rudge, Tony Sanson, Lee Sinclair: A really good game from Bill Reeves, Linda Plaisted, and Noel Davis drawing 18 across against Eileen Potts, Ed Cowan, Cliff Plaisted: Ken Hope, Paul Hayward, Bill Knight beat Sandy Hannan, Stan North and Stuart Hemmings 19-15; Len Rudge, Peter Ross, Mike Douglas beat Sue Milner, Joyce Reeves, Brian Allen 159. With Len Rudge winning his game, he kept top position in the league. But it could have been different - If Len had lost, and either Eileen Potts or Carol Rudge's team had won it would have been a 3 way tie for top spot. Unfortunately for Stuart Hemmings team they came bottom!!!! Well done to all who participated, in such hot conditions. San Miguel have been awarded the Opening Ceremony for the Valencian Championships on Saturday 24th September. The Closing Ceremony will be held at San Luis. Torry hold on for narrow win in season’s derby opener CD Torrevieja ....................3 CD Almoradi .....................2

ore than 3 months have elapsed since CD Torrevieja last played a competitive match in division 3 group 6, and they couldn´t have wished for a more appealing opening fixture. New Torry manager Gabi Correa led his troops out to do battle with local rivals Almoradi, who make a welcome return, following 19 years exile from this level of football. With the small matter of pre season friendlies (won 2, lost 3) out of the way, senor Correa has assembled a reasonable looking squad, swelled by the midweek signings of Costa and Matheus, increasing the number to 16. Almoradi meanwhile, remained unbeaten in their pre season run outs. With Fran Rodriguez at the helm, they can boast no less than 5 ex Torry players within their ranks. Obele, Cristian Sanchez, Manu & Sergi have all worn the blue and white strip so loved by many, but it´s last year’s captain
Burguillos who raised a few eyebrows, for he is reported to have wanted lower league football as the training schedule got in the way of studying more money changing his mind perhaps? However, now with both clubs into the business end of things, the only question on most supporters minds was ‘Which of the two clubs will get their season off to a winning start’? All the early signs pointed to the Torrevejense who were far quicker out of the blocks than Almoradi. They were certainly playing all the decent football but most of it, unfortunately, was in the midfield third with them presenting little of a threat to Josete in the visitors goal. Torry did go close, however, in minute 10 when a Zapata free kick shaved the top of the woodwork. It was on the half hour when the home side created their next chance of note, a Lewis cross met by the head of Matheus that we all thought was creeping in before a wicked deflection diverted the ball for a Torry corner, and then just a couple of minutes later the opportunity of the half, as Torry skipper Zapata, with only Josete to beat, hit his effort straight into the keepers arms when a foot either side would have put the home side in front. Nevertheless, certainly in terms of possession, as the teams went into their half time break, Torry were ahead on points, on which they would be hoping to capitalise during the second period. Last season the home side averaged a little more than a goal a game and as we got deeper into this

opening league fixture it very much looked as though even that statistic was not going to be achieved. Torry continued to apply the pressure but a concerning lack of firepower was giving Joeste a relatively easy afternoon, that was until a final quarter surge which saw the Almoradi keeper pull off an excellent save from Matheus on 72 minutes. But the heads were now up and as the Torry pressure increased the Almoradi defence finally buckled. First it was another low shot from Matheus two minutes later and then, while we were still recovering from the winger’s fine effort, Lewis was on target to put the home side two in front. However, while the home side were still celebrat-
ing what they thought was a winning lead, ex Torry striker Obele reminded them that there was still a game to be played when he pulled one back from a fine header with just 6 minutes of the game remaining. But once again the pressure shifted as captain Zapata was on the end of a stunning strike to send the home fans away with a comfortable win and then who would believe it, yet another late headed goal for the visitors from Poveda. Now 3-2 and a nailbiting few seconds for the home side, but they did manage to hang on to secure a deserved win. Next Sunday the long journey to Villarreal where they take on one of the division’s most consistent sides. The match kicks off at 12 noon.
Encouraging start for CD Montesinos By Andrew Atkinson
CD Montesinos got their pre-season games underway this month - with a 2-2 draw against 1st Regional teams Catral and a 2-0 win against Torrevieja CF at The Municipal Stadium, Los Montesinos, Alicante. The return of Brazilian star striker Vazuinho has been delayed due to injury, who is sidelined alongside Monte skipper Fernando. Long term injury casuality Demitri has returned to the fold. New coach Camacho will be pleased with the per-
formances as he settles into his new post at the Vega Baja based Segunda Regional Grupo club. Former Sporting Orihuela manager Camacho was hopeful of bringing in five new players to CD Montesinos - but his ex-club have refused to release them from their contracts. CD Montesinos continue their pre-season fixtures, hosting San Isidro on August 26; Racing San Miguel (September 3) and Bigastro (September 10).
