FAOC DELIVERS 90 PROPOSALS TO MAYOR

epresentatives of the Coastal Collective, the Federation of the Orihuela Costa (FAOC), met with the Orihuela mayor, Emilio BascuĂąana, and the councillor of Tourism, Sofia Alvarez, on

Wednesday, when they presented the city officials with a comprehensive document of complaints and proposals, compiled by Coastal Residents, for inclusion in the 2017 Municipal Budget. In justifying the demands of Coastal residents the FAOC President, Joaquin Capel ,stated that "We Oriolanos want nothing more than an equitable

share of the budget, monies to which we are entitled and investment in which the coastal area is so desperately in need.� Spokesman Thomas Moreno said that many of the proposals are repeat requests that have been submitted to the council on lots of previous occasions. In outlining the services required he said that much of the coastal infrastructure is ageing and in poor condition.

Many of the public services provided by the council are totally inadequate and from a list of over 90 proposals at least 35 of them are considered to be in need of urgent action and financial investment. He said that the document has been prepared and developed over many months and that it has involved over fifty people from many different associations. Continued on Page 6

Campoverde Theatre Group were delighted to present a cheque of over 700 Euros to the Help the Hero’s Charityrecently. This represented the second donation from their last production, “Somme” Memories of a Century which also raised money for The Royal British Legion. The success of this show has encouraged the group to present another Supper show at the Phoenix Nights Bar. The group are now busy rehearsing “ Gone But Not Forgotten; Memories of the Stars”, to again be staged at the Phoenix Nights Bar, San Miguel de Salinas. This production will pay homage to some of the great presonalities that have died during 2016, so many well loved stars of stage, television and the world of popular music. The

work of a few of these will be presented by the Theatre Group during an evening of song, dance and some very funny sketches.

Audioguide for Orihuela Museum The Museum of Sacred Art in Orihuela has recently introduced a new audioguide that allows visitors to enjoy a tour of its exhibition with a recorded spoken commentary which provides background, context, and information on the exhibits being viewed in the different areas and rooms. According to the director, Jose Antonio Martinez, it is a great step forward and will make visits to the museums by non Spanish speaking residents and visitors much more informative and enjoyable. The system will be further developed with the future addition of interactive whiteboards in each of the separate rooms, which will provide access to additional information of different pieces that are displayed. The audioguide, which has developed over the past three months, is available in Spanish, English and Italian and partially in French. It is hoped to be able to provide a commentary in Valenciano in the coming weeks. Creator Pablo López, said that the intention is to create a network of audio guides to facilitate cultural information to tourists in all city museums and cultural buildings. The new resource was introduced by the director

of the Museum of Sacred Art, Juan Antonio Martínez, during World Tourism Day under the theme of 'promoting universal accessibility'. When observed through binoculars or telescope. the terminator [the line that separates sunlight and shadow] makes the lunar landscape stand out in stark relief. Mountains, craters and valleys look especially steep and rugged because the low Sun makes every hill cast a long dramatic shadow. Missing woman found safe There was a happy ending on Thursday when an elderly woman suffering from Alzheimer’s disease was reported missing from the Orihuela pedenia of El El Mudamiento. The woman, who was identified by neighbours as Rosario, had been missing from her home since the previous evening at which time a search was mounted involving the Policia Local, Civil Protection, Red Cross, the Provincial Fire Consortium (also with canine unit), ECOS (Unidad Canina) and the Civil Guard. The woman was found early on Thursday morning in a rural area less than a kilometre from her home. She was located in a small cove amongst a bed of reeds where she had been sheltering from the overnight rains. A medical helicopter was quickly despatched to the scene which airlifted her to the Vega Baja Hospital for a medical examination. The Orihuela councillor for emergencies, Victor Valverde, was swift to congratulate the control centre and the search teams for their contribution which resulted in a successful outcome. He also thanked local residents for their hospitality and assistance in the provision of sustenance to the crews during their overnight efforts.

A Choirmaster / Mistress and organist or pianist For the La Siesta Evangelical Church on the La Siesta Urbanization in Torrevieja We have a wonderful church with an equally wonderful and friendly congregation, who make all new members feel very welcome and included in our services. Up until earlier this year we also had a magnificent choir who led the congregation in the singing of hymns. Unfortunately, this is now missing, as we have lost both our long-standing Choir Master and our lead organist. WHERE ARE ALL THE CHOIR LEADERS AND CHURCH ORGANISTS? WE REALLY DO NEED YOUR HELP! We have a wonderful choir of approximately 20 strong who really need someone to lead them and someone to play for them. The Choir would normally sing at our 11.00am services which are held every 2nd and 4th Sunday, (and 5th Sunday, when

this applies). Our new Choir Leader could possibly have been a Music Teacher or been part of a Choir or Band. In addition, as well as our wonderful church organ we have an electric piano, so anyone who could play either of these instruments would be greatly appreciated to accompany the choir. Our new church organist/pianist would also be required to help our existing organist with our 9.30am Services on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month. Our Church is very proud of its Choir and appreciate them singing to a congregation of about 100. The Choir is a happy bunch who enjoy sharing their love of music, and it shows, so if you also love music please join us. Continued from Page One FAOC delivers 90 proposals to Mayor “They have spent many hours analysing the shortcomings of the council provided coastal services,” he said, “giving rise to more than ninety proposals which the mayor now needs to give some serious thought.” The mayor told the gathering that “there is a unanimous desire amongst the government team that the views and interests of the citizens of the coast are seriously considered when deciding and prioritising council spending and investments although these things are not as simple as they seem.” Aspects that can be dealt with fairly quickly and easily include a coastal cleanup plan, improvements to waste collection and the increased cleaning of roads and public spaces including gardens and parks. There should also be the introduction of an eco - park for the deposit of garden waste and prunings. The report also asks for increased services on the

beaches, including better solutions to the collection and disposal of algae. He said that such measures should be introduced all year, not just in the high season. Other complaints include the poor state of paving and signage, greater attention to accessibility, certainly for the elderly and the infirm, increased safety, for example the road between Villamartin and La Zenia which in dire need of improvement. Oscar Garrido, from the Villamartin Neighborhood Association, highlighted the problems faced as a result of the excessive influx of cars resulting from the opening of the boulevard. He said that his members are in desperate need of traffic calming measures in order to slow the traffic down. The subject of the La Zenia Emergency Centre was raised once again as was the lack of cultural facilities and events being provided on the coast. Adolfo Hernandez, secretary of the FAOC, highlighted the problems in Dehesa de Campoamor where the pavements are virtually nonexistent,

he historic bull ring in Orihuela which has been a crumbling ruin for the last 30 years is to be saved and turned into a beautiful cultural arena for up to 2,800 persons with museum, garden, playground for children and cafeteria. It will be Orihuela city’s third cultural centre. Already they have the classic Teatro Circo which can seat an audience of 1,000 and the Lonja which is used for exhibitions and has an auditorium with seats for 600. The cost of restoring the bull ring is estimated to be over €400,000. And where will this money come from? From the Orihuela Costa, obviously! Orihuela Costa with a population equal to that of Orihuela city, has no cultural centre. The many groups which organise cultural and social activities such as choirs, theatre, dance, bridge, indoor sports and simply social groups all have to find and pay for premises in which to organise their activities, mainly in bars and restaurants. Orihuela Costa has no library for leisure reading and study facilities for our nearly 5,000 children and young people. The so-called reading point isolated, stocked with second hand books was run by volunteers. An unviable half measure, it was closed some time ago. Orihuela city has three splendid public libraries with professional staff. In the recent public hearings for the 2017 budget, C.L.A.R.O., the Federation of Associations of Orihuela Costa and an interested resident put forward proposals for a cultural centre in Orihuela Costa, including a Library, to be situated on municipal land in the parking area of the centrally placed La Zenia Boulevard Commercial Centre. The Mayor said on the occasion of the budget hearing that there would be left over funds from previous financial years and Orihuela Costa could look forward soon to some attractive investments in infrastructure and social facilities. He did not refer to the rumour that a so-called cultural centre would be housed in an inappropriate empty shell of a building isolated, kilometres from the centre of Orihuela Costa, along the canal road in Villamartin, with no parking

facilities, beside an abandoned social housing project. Nor did he apologise for the fact that year after year, Orihuela Costa gets no benefit whatsoever from the million euro annual cultural budget. The reason: because Orihuela Costa it has no facilities for hosting events!! Alas, we are being cheated again of our rights. At first the Mayor was reported to be intending to take the money for the revamped bull ring from funds set aside to expropriate land to be used to complete the coastal promenade between Cala Capitan and Cala Mosca. Such disrespect for an emblematic project to enhance the Orihuela Costa coastline would not have been surprising. Fortunately, this scheme proved unworkable otherwise we could have said goodbye for ever to a completed coastal promenade, perhaps the only jewel in Orihueal Costa’s otherwise hollow crown. Now the funds to revamp the ruined bullring are apparently to be taken from the left over funds from previous years – the ones half-promised by the Mayor for Orihuela Costa. Bad luck Orihuela Costa. Once again we are to be victims of shabby, shameful treatment when a revived housing boom is expanding the population of Orihuela Costa, swelling the coffers of the Orihuela Town Hall and aggravating the deficiencies in services and facilities from which we suffer. The Orihuela city political parties have no shame. Discrimination and exploitation are the contributions they make to Orihuela Costa without acknowledging that without the income from the coast, the city would suffer a tremendous reduction in services, cultural and sporting facilities and quality of life in general. Robbing Orihuela Costa of the money needed to improve our quality of life in order to revamp the bullring and create a third cultural centre in Orihuela city, should be a red rag to the bull of Orihuela Costa’s respectful, law abiding, tax paying for nothing-in-return residents. hese days there are so many different types of television available satellite, IPTV, re-broadcast, android, freesat, freeview and more, so we would like to take a while to explain some basics and pros and cons of all the systems. Satellite Television Definitely the most reliable and best picture quality. This comes straight from a dish . With an option of freesat ( no monthly fees ) or movie and sport packages you can see all your UK channels with some in HD. Some receivers will also have android built in for streaming through the internet movies, box sets, sports or channels from other countries.You can also have receivers that have more than 1 tuner so you can record one and watch another. In Spain you can get a system that has ALL UK channels (sports , movies etc ) for around a 100€ per year, this connects to the dish and the internet but all the pictures come from the dish so internet speed is not vital. Official SKY cards are also available and this is the best system, but you must pay the full official Sky subscription price. Obviously the bigger the dish the better but, despite what some installers will tell you, a well installed 1.4 mtr dish will work well in most areas without any problems.

IPTV Internet Protocol Television ( IPTV) is streamed through the internet. This requires a decent standard of reliable internet otherwise you will get buffering and freezing. The lower you set your picture quality the better it will work, however, the picture could then be a bit blurred. A good thing about this system is you do not need a dish but you will suffer on quality. You can get systems that are free per month ie they run ‘Film On’ etc but again quality can be poor but then for a low price and no fee it does a job. Others you pay monthly for and can include movies on demand and a 7 day catch up service and more channels than you would get on a satellite dish. But be warned, if your internet is not good even BBC will not work. Re-broadcast This is when a company takes some channels via a dish and re-sends them to your house. The good point is a small dish, however the picture quality is not as good as a direct dish and you will pay a monthly fee. Android Boxes These again use internet. You can put free services on them like Film On, Mobdro, Showbox etc but again good internet is very important and picture quality is not as good. These can be good on a second receiver or have a satellite receiver that does satellite and android as mentioned earlier. Freesat and Freeview Freesat is the free channel package from the UK ie BBC, ITV etc . 350 channels including regionals. UK Freeview is not available in Spain. This works on an aerial and will get you Spanish freeview TDT instead. Most of these systems can be viewed all under one roof at Satellites Direct in San Miguel . Established 8 years and in the shop for 4 they will not be "here today gone tomorrow" and having a showroom means not only can you view everything, but also have a reliable point of contact.The owner and staff are very knowledgable and has been in the industry for over 30 years offering good honest advice. San Miguel’s Environmental Management denounced

T

he neighbourhood association ‘San Miguel Archangel’ has denounced as "catastrophic" the environmental management of the municipality by the town council. At the end of the first year of the new political term they have reported nine environmental problems that have seriously degraded the natural heritage in the local area. Included on the list is the reclamation of forest soil, the dumping of debris in green areas and inadequacies in the town’s sewage network. Most of these complaints are of an agricultural nature surrounding the reclamation and relocation of forest soil. Other problems highlighted are said to affect areas of tracts of land of high ecological and cultural value, which are included in the Valencian forest map. There are also concerns over the dumping of debris in green areas as well as the poor state of the sewage system in many residential areas. The main part of these attacks has affected directly the conservation of cultural and natural heritage in the areas of special protection for birds, the Sierra de Escalona and Dehesa de Campoamor. This is an

In most cases, the association have said, there was a lack of relevant and appropriate controls. Despite the seriousness of all the problems which have been raised, nine in all, the Association state that there has been nothing but silence from the Councillor of the environment, María José Costa Medrano (UPyD.

Healthcare Grants available

The Orihuela Councillor for Health, Noelia Grao, announced last week that her department is inviting bids for financial grants on behalf of legally constituted non profit making associations operating in healthcare and animal protection.

A total of 30,000 euro of municipal aid is available but applica-

tions must be submitted by 20 October at the offices of the General Register of Orihuela, located in the Prop Building.

She said that "the council want to promote the implementation of activities in two important areas, those of health and the protection of animals at the local level through associations and

non-profit entities.""

Thus, the groups that feel they are eligible for aid, should develop programs in health studies, information campaigns, and in the awareness of social and health matters; patient care programs, which are complementary to those offered by the Valencia Health Agency.

Torrevieja’s seismic risk

Nine died in the Lorca quake Torrevieja is about to enter into a contract in which a number of buildings and areas in the town will be evaluated for seismic risk. It is intended that the study will identify those buildings where work is necessary in order to reduce the impact of earthquakes on public safety through improvement of the built- environment, so as to resist earthquake effects such as ground shaking. The initiative is being promoted by the CEO of the local police, Javier Minguez, who is seeking to provide a hazard and risk assessment of the vulnerability to seismic risk in areas such as Acequión and Las Torretas. Minguez said that his staff needs up to date analysis so as to provide them to develop an awareness strategy in a town that has one of the largest seismic risks in the country.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

Escape to the Ice A few years ago, I wrote an article called 'Escape to the Sun', which was followed shortly afterwards by a book of the same title. Since that time, I am occasionally reminded by expats in other parts of the world that some expats are not particularly interested in the sun, but prefer to start a new life in cooler parts of the world. In order to address what some may see as an imbalance in ‘Letters from the Atlantic’, I offer the following story. Older expats will remember those heady days after the Second World War, when the governments of both Australia and New Zealand encouraged a rapid growth in their population and prosperity by encouraging would-be British expats to relocate under their ‘Assisted Passage’ schemes. All it took was ten pounds per adult, with free passage for children, and a new life in a young and exciting country could begin. The governments of these countries promised housing, employment and generally a more optimistic future outside the UK. These expats become known as the ‘Ten Pound Poms’ and many of us will have family members or know of people who took advantage of this positive opportunity for migrants to seek a new life for themselves and their families. Later, there were similar government schemes on offer, with one engagingly called ‘Bring Out a Briton’. These schemes reached a peak in 1969, but sadly ended in 1982. The ‘Ten Pound Poms’ had an obligation to remain in the country for at least two years; otherwise they would have to refund the cost of their subsidised passage, which was substantial and therefore acted as a deterrent. Some returned home, but a large number failed to settle

back in the UK, and returned to Australia and New Zealand once again. These expats became known as the ‘Boomerang Poms’. Australia offered similar schemes to the Irish Republic, the Netherlands, Greece, Italy and West Germany, as well as Turkey, Malta and Cyprus. This was at a time when migration was seen as positive. How things have changed; all this is in stark contrast to current world events where many view migrants in a negative and depressing light. The days of the ‘Ten Pound Poms’ are now long gone, or are they? In many ways, the free movement of people provided by the European Union has provided similar opportunities for expats to live and work in a country of their own choosing. Despite the uncertainties created by the Brexit vote, many continue to leave the UK to seek a better future for themselves and their families. Now, getting back to the title of this 'Letter'; how about moving to Iceland? From what I hear, it is an incredibly beautiful country, with many friendly and welcoming people. Often known as ‘The Land of Fire’, Iceland has a great deal to offer the expat who is looking to escape from the UK and to start a new life in this Nordic nation. The crime rate is very low and murders are very rare in the country. Indeed, the World Economic Forum has voted Iceland as the most peaceful country in the world for the last six years. If you are looking for happiness, Iceland came third in the table, just behind Denmark and Sweden for the happiness factor, according to the United Nations. There are mountains to explore, waterfalls to admire, as well as hot springs to soak in. It is also one of the best places in the world to admire and experience the wonder of the Northern Lights. What’s not to like? Iceland is currently rather keen to encourage British people who may be interested in locating permanently to their beautiful country. Following the world economic crisis, when Iceland was badly affected by its banking industry, its population fell rapidly as workers moved to other countries to find work. The time has now come to redress the balance and the country’s economy is in need of a boost, which will be helped by an increase in migration to the country. One Icelandic budget airline is currently offering to refund the cost of the flight to Iceland if the traveller subsequently relocates to the country.

All this sounds very appealing and I may visit Iceland one day. However there is always a downside, isn’t there? It is hard to overstate the importance of fish to the Icelandic people, since it remains the cornerstone of their economy. Over the centuries, fish has become a key source of the nation’s food, as well as its wealth. Sadly, I really couldn't stay too long, since I have an aversion to the smell and taste of fish, which I gather the locals are rather keen on. Clearly, it takes all sorts. JACK NICKLAUS could be as ruthless a destroyer as any in his day, but he does believe in sporting tradition. At Royal Birkdale in 1969, the Ryder Cup came down to the last hole of the last match between Nicklaus and Tony Jacklin. On the 17th, Nicklaus led by one shot, until Jacklin sank a 50-ft eagle putt to square it. On the 18th Nicklaus sank a 4ft putt, leaving his opponent a 3ft putt for a draw. If he missed it the USA would win the cup outright. Nicklaus then bent and picked up Jacklin’s ball marker rather than forcing him to putt out. He said: "I don't think you would have missed that, Tony, but I didn't want to give you the chance." The Ryder Cup ended with 16 points to each team, the USA retaining the cup. Most of Nicklaus’s teammates were furious, Sam Snead growled: ”We came over here to win, not to be good old boys.” British skipper Eric Brown had earlier instructed his players not to look for American balls if they landed in the rough, and during a fourball on the second day the captains had to come out and calm the warring players down. Nicklaus and Jacklin became friends, and went on to design the Concession Golf Club in Florida together. Nicklaus says now: “Of course everyone wants to win but the important thing is the game. 180’s Alan Havelock (Ale House) Featured Match: Junction Jaguars v Junction Jackals This time last year the Jaguars were victorious over their counterparts, the Jackals and so it was not surprising that those dirty dogs would want to take their revenge this season. First up in the triples was new signing, Dave Wright teaming up with Andy Rutter [100,135] (last season’s men’s singles finalist) and Nigel Elvery. They faced the Jaguars new signing, Lesley ‘Eagles!’, Hildy-do-da [76] and Wendy Woo Hayward [71] (last season’s ladies singles finalist). The ladies scored OK but didn’t make it to a finish despite whittling away at the men’s 300-point advantage, Wrighty [83] eventually did the damage with D6. Lisa and Simone did little to defend against Wrighty and Elvery’s [100, 60 and D2]. Patty Poo [83, 138] and Hilda [73] put up a much better fight against Galloway [63, 62, 60] and Gildea’s D2 as did Wendy Hayward [85, 80] and Lelly-Bear ‘Eagles!’ [ 70] over Bazzles and Rutter [85, 60, 140, 91]. At half time, lovely Lisa’s sausages and chips with onion gravy was devoured in record time- well we did have Alex ‘tape-snake’ Nikolov to feed! Then it was big smiles when Wendy Woo Hayward [72, 81, 75, D2] pipped Wrighty [140, 85] to the quickest finish. The mighty Rutter [60, 60, 80, D6] almost succumbed to Simone ‘Laurence’ de Lacy [133] as both were down to the double. Patty Poo [79, 73, 60] put up a valiant effort against Gildea [100] but the sassy Landlord got his finish first. However, captain Phil de Lacy seemed to lose it against Hilda Wilkinson’s consistent scoring and cheeky check-out on D8. The rumble in the Junction of Tracey ‘Psycho’ Simpson v Alex ‘Bloody’ Nikolov was fought and won by the latter with D20, neither particularly pulling out their best performances, however Denise ‘Snipper’ Green [64, 90, 77] gave the girls a few things to cheer about until Scooby Hugh put the final nail in the coffin [123, D4].

San Luis Bowls Club The Linea Directa Valencian Lawn Bowls Championships began at San Luis on Sunday with the Men’s singles. Initially there were a few challenges; like trying to cast and keep the jack on the green but once the players got to grips with the new carpet the spectators enjoyed some excellent bowling and some really close matches. Unfortunately our men were knocked out within the first 2 rounds. The Ladies singles were played at La Siesta and again there were some excellent matches to watch, with our 2 players: Irene Everett and Ros Holmes beating some good opponents. Irene, after a hard fight, unfortunately lost her final match to Jacqui Johnston (Q) but Ros beat Mary Dyer (SM) to reach the semi-finals. We wish Ros the very best of luck and also the competitors in the up-coming triples and mixed pairs competition. We look forward to seeing spectators at all of these events. All the semi- finals and finals will be held at San Luis with the closing ceremony on October 8th. Rather surprisingly, Quesada’s Jason Prokopowycz and Chris Bazier went out in the 1st round of the Men’s Pairs to outsiders Carl Eagle and Bob Nesbitt.

With only the occasional hint of rain the Linea Directa Valencian Championships are very much on schedule and through to the semi final stage in all but the Mixed Pairs and Mixed Triples. In the men’s pairs events holders Ian Kenyon and Tony French of Vistabella went out in round two, failing to progress to the Semi finals which saw an all San Miguel affair in semi final one with Carl Eagle and Bob Nesbit, conquerors of Drew Gerrard and Jason P on the way, facing club mates Chris Collier and Stuart Denholm while Bill Pain and National Singles Champion Martin Foulcer of Vistabella will meet Monte Mar’s Ronnie Cairns and Dave Melville in match 2.

The Ladies Pairs event features the ‘nearly girls’ Carol Broomfield and Peta Rhodes of Quesada against Lynn Greenland and Gail Willshire of San Miguel while Vistabella’s Carol Thorpe and Lyn Watkins, who had earlier disposed of the Ladies National Singles Champion Ann Eagle, and her partner Pat McEwan, play AM Stevenson and Chris Parsons of the Emerald Isle in semi final two. Monday through to Wednesday features the Mixed Pairs competition at La Siesta, San Miguel and San Luis with matches getting underway at 19am and 2pm after which the action moves to San Luis (Casa Ventura) for the semi finals and finals of all competitions. San Miguel Bowls Club The Valencian Championships have been in full swing this week with a large number of red shirts playing on each green. Unfortunately this led to a number of games being played with San Miguel playing San Miguel.!!! There have been some brilliant games with very close results. It must have been a nightmare organising the timetable, but on occasion there were players playing the first round on La Siesta in the morning, then off to San Luis in the afternoon, then San Miguel the following morning - all three totally different greens!!! San Miguel have done extremely well with a number of players in the semi finals. Anita Brown, who has won the title twice before has reached the ladies singles semis. Cliff Plaisted has had some great games to reach the mens semis. The men's pairs semi final brings two San Miguel teams against each other, Chris Collier & Stuart Denholm play Bob Nesbitt & Carl Eagle. Ladies Pairs Lynn Greenland and Gail Willshire are in the semis and the Mixed 4's team of Cliff Plaisted, Val & Chris Collier and Stuart Denholm are also there. GOOD LUCK TO YOU ALL. Greenlands Bowls Club A good turnout for Saturday 24 September with 21 bowlers including a welcome to potential new members Neville Pulfer and Roy Nicholson. Results as follows First Helen Langlois with 34 points second Val Duchart 30 points third Rudi Wattley 26 points with Dennis Brown filling the fourth place with 24 points. The wooden spoon this week was won by Terry Lawton. The club members departed for Mojacar on Saturday 1st Oct for 5 days of leisure and hopefully some good bowling with the local clubs. The event was well supported, there were teams from up and down the Costa Blanca, Almeria and the U.K. Monday 19th September we held a charity event, starting with a spider which was won by our own Ethel Finan. The charity match was won by Geraldine Fisher, Sue Kemp, Brian Zelin and Gordon Fisher. Tuesday 20th September the main event started four days of excellent bowling with the winners of each group playing in the semi finals for the Trophy. With the four runners up going on to play for the Gran Alacant Mixed Rinks Plate. Also on Tuesday the ladies from the club held a cake stall. All cakes and pastry home made, this was a great success. On Tuesday evening we had dinner at the Rincon, Wednesday dinner

Emerald Isle Bowls Club Firstly I must apologise to the ladies of San Luis by confusing them, thinking they were playing at Emerald Isle but it was actually San Miguel, and they also walked away with the trophy but hopefully the EI can bring it back next year During the week the Linea Directa Valencian Championship has been taking place, EI have a good representation in the tournament with Frank Close in the semi final of the singles Christine Parsons and Ann Marie Stevenson in semi final of pairs and Paul Parkes and John Pooley in semi final of mixed rinks Lets hope the upturn in the EI fortunes continues.

LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY This week all three of our games were devoted to finding our Stableford Week Champion with the score for each round added together with the top scorer taking the trophy. We also had our normal 2's Club in operation on each day of the competition. It was Tom Hardie who took the early initiative on Monday taking top spot with an excellent score of 38 pts. The days top four each receiving prizes on the day were as follows: 1st Tom Hardie 38 pts 2nd Mike Chapman 36 pts 3rd Dave Pulling 34 pts 4th Bryan Neal 33 pts 2's Club: Tom Hardie, Friedel Knebel and Brian Dent On Wednesday it was Mike Chapman who took the overall lead following up Monday's level par round with another 36 pts and edging out Liz Robertson on a count back to take first prize on the day. Two of Monday's other placed players also made the frame and with Tom Hardie scoring 30 pts it was all to play for on the final round. The top four are shown below however it was Ron Phipps with the biggest smile having the only 2 on the day to take the contents of the 2's Club. 1st Mike Chapman 36 pts (c/b) 2nd Liz Robertson 36 pts 3rd Dave Pulling 33 pts 4th Bryan Neal 31 pts On Friday there were some tremendous scores with 38 points needed to get in the frame. None of those in the top four however were in contention for the overall prize and it was Tom Hardie who came storming back top win the competition with a score of 37 pts on the day and 105 pts overall. Dave Pulling put in a good performance also scoring 37 pts but missing out with a total of 104 pts. Mike Chapman was third with a total of 102 pts. The excellent scores taking the top four spots on the day are shown below one of whom Terry Field had no less than three 2's to take the majority of the 2's Club money.

The competition was to raise funds for the Royal British Legion and Help 4 Heroes. There were TWO separate pairs competitions held on the day with shotgun starts starts at 8.15am and 2.00pm for in excess of 110 golfers. As you can imagine this was somewhat of a logistical nightmare as the afternoon players arrived at the course at approximately the same time as the morning players completed their rounds and there were cards,raffle tickets,meal tickets and money everywhere but with some excellent organisation all went as well as could be expected and all players started on time which was something of a feat considering what was going on! We must say a big thank you to Diego Garcia for presenting the Vistabella course in such excellent condition for our competition given the long hot summer and look forward to seeing the new 7 holes opening in the near future. The day generated €323 towards the charity and was added to the monies raised a few days earlier at the event held on Thursday 15th September 2016. On Thursday 29th September despite torrential rain during the evening and early morning Eurogolf played a better ball pairs competition. Amazingly the course was really dry and even the bunkers didn’t hold any water. There were some good pairings on paper but the favorites didn’t take the winners prize. In 3rd place with a credible score of 43 points were George McCallum and Hedy Paehlig 2nd David Valentine and Ken Enever 44 points 1st Mike Mitchell and Clive Peck with an impressive 46 points. Monte blow as Vaz sidelined

By ANDREW ATKINSON The Spanish FA have re-scheduled the 2016-17 fixtures - after three teams unexpectedly pulled out of the Segundo Regional Grupo 16 - that affects clubs including CD Benijofar, CD Montesinos, RP Orihuela, CD Murada, Atl Orihuela, CFP Orihuela, Grupo Caliche, Callosa Deportivo B, Todo Deporte, Sport Horadada and Sporting Orihuela. Alicante, Los Montesinos based CD Montesinos, who suffered a 3-0 defeat against CD Benijofar in their opening game of the season, host CD Murada on Sunday, October 2, at The Municipal Stadium.

New CD Montesinos coach Camacho has suffered setbacks with the long-term injury to Brazilian striker Vazquinho, who will be sidelined until the end of October, having returned to the club following a season at Sporting Saladar. Striker Wallace has departed the club, due to work commitments, added to the departure of midfielder Dani O'Rourke, coming on the back of the planned arrival of five new players, that was thwarted, due to not being released from their relevant contracts. Callosa Deportivo B hit seven goals against Todo Deporte in a 7-0 hammering; with other notable scorelines, including Atletico Orihuela's 4-2 win against CFP Orihuela; CD Murada drawing 2-2 against CD Benijofar and Grupo Caliche sharing the spoils in a 3-3 draw against RP Orihuela. CD Montesinos will be back in action after this weekend, with a home fixture against Racing Playas Orihuela on October 16, followed by games (away) at FB Redovan (October 23) and against Atletico Orihuela (October 30) at The Municipal, Los Montesinos.

Due to bad weather forecast for our visit to this sometimes hard to find venue our numbers were depleted, there was no need to worry because the threatened storm never arrived just a slight breeze to make the days play a little more interesting. However the real surprise came from the condition of the greens, I have never seen the greens at Alicante golf so bad, they are attempting to repair them but really they were almost unplayable in places. That said it didn’t affect the scoring, yes of course as always on this course some players find the water more often than they would like but on the other hand some players actually broke par! Carp-R-Us Club News The Autumn Cup venue had to be changed on September 29th from Beniarres because of the lack of water. Our anglers had intended to fish Pedrera, but due to the overnight rain , decided to go to Bigastro. The Cup was won by Steve Collins with a weight of 1.64kg, with Mark Foden in second place with 0.62kg. The remaining 8 anglers did not weigh in, so the change of venue was not very successful. Round 4 of the Autumn series on the 6th of October will be on the Eden canal in Guardamarpegs will be at the normal time of 8.00am and the fishing will be from 9.00 till 2.00pm. Round 5 of the series on the 13th of October will almost certainly be at El Bosquet. The next Quiz night will be on Tuesday the 11th of October starting at 7.30pm. The cost is 1Euro per person and teams to a maximum of 6 can take part.

Our next Sunday meeting will be on the 16th of October with the Committee at 10.30am followed by the General meeting at 11.00.
