hen I first arrived in Cabo Roig over 15 years ago, the Orihuela Costa was a popular ‘all year round’ destination. It was a thriving community, clean, well populated and most importantly, the businesses were doing well. But to say that the municipality now looks ‘rather tired’ would be somewhat of an understatement. The neglect began 7 or 8 years ago under the watch of the Councillor for the Coast at the time, Cllr Aniorte, and it has been declining at a steady rate ever since. But even at that stage the problems were being identified to the council by local groups and organisations, with the usual resultant assurances. Unfortunately though, as often as the promises were being made by the council they were also being broken.

There was a short period, during the tenure of Councillor Martina Scheurer, when things improved, but for the last 12 months or more the situation has again been in decline. The situation is similar across the whole of the region and in recent months many urbanisations and communities are now beginning to take it upon

themselves to do something about it. They are fed up with the Orihuela Council’s failure to provide basic services to residents and the businesses on the coast. In Cabo Roig one resident

became so discontented that a little over 12 months ago he formed the ‘Cabo Roig Clean Up Committee’ which now meets every Friday morning to tidy up around the local area. Continued on Page 2

Approximately 20 volunteers gather outside the Trinity Pub at about 8.30 am and then spend the next 90 or so minutes picking up litter, cleaning around the bins, weeding and generally tidying up on both sides of the N332. John Critcher said that “I was at the end of my tether. I just couldn’t believe the lack of support we were getting from the local government. They seem perfectly happy to take our taxes but the services they provide in return are totally inadequate.” Together with other residents, John has been emailing the council’s offices for many years in the hope of having their issues addressed, but little has been done to date. “I have sent them list after list. I have emailed the council staff who are very helpful at providing me with assurances. However, what they are not so good at is following them through”. As I walked around Cabo Roig last Friday morning it is easy to see just how the increasing volume of litter and damaged infrastructure is ruining the cleanliness and look of the area. The continually expanding eyesores caused by litter strewn along roadsides, across pavements, around parks and recreation areas, in green zones, in fact now almost everywhere, is totally unacceptable. And it doesn’t end there because the problems now extend far beyond the litter. There are broken commercial electrical junction boxes strewn across the area. One outside the Trinity pub, the responsibility of Iberdrola, has been denounced by the pub owner. It is an accident just waiting to happen, an accident that could quite possibly result in a death. There are broken fences, damaged water casements, upended paving slabs, fragmented drainage covers, many of which have been in their current broken down state for as long as 3 years and all of which are a risk to the public safety of local residents. “The council is fully aware of all these problems but their response to our requests has been completely inadequate,” said John. “It seems that despite all their rhetoric they just can’t be bothered

with us. What has become of their Duty of Care?” “What we really need is for the area to be visited by someone in authority, someone who can make decisions with regard to the support that we are provided on the coast and as such I would like to invite the mayor, Emilio Bascuñana, together with the councillors for cleaning and tourism, Noelia Grao and Sofia Alvarez, to walk around the area with us. Let them then see at first hand that we are not simply complaining for complaints sake but we have the genuine interest of the area at heart. I am sure that a happy, content and supportive population is worth an hour of Snr Bascuñana’s time.” We would like nothing better that to see an immaculate Cabo Roig and Orihuela Costa, with tourists flooding into the area, and taking advantage of the wonderful facilities that we have on offer, all year round. Surely, as politicians and residents alike, we are all aiming toward the same goal, we all have the same interests at heart, a clean, vibrant and appealing Orihuela Costa.

n its first statement of the New Year the neighborhood association "San Miguel Arcángel" said that it wants its first words to be of gratitude to the clubs and associations that kindly donated to the food bank which has been so important to many families and individuals in the town over the Christmas period. They made special mention of Help Vega Baja, San Miguel Social Club, San Miguel Bowls Club, O'Brian Language Centre, San Miguel pharmacy and the German hair salon Eva's Salon de la Zenia. As a result of their donations they were able to collect toys for the children as well as 246 kilos / liters of food and € 2,831.50. This money, which has been used entirely in local commerce, and has been spent on providing an extra Christmas contri-

bution of fruit, vegetables, meat and fish for families in need. Likewise, the association gratefully acknowledges the work of volunteers who have made possible the delivery of food and toys. The whole experience has been an enormous and authentic gesture of humanity and generosity towards our fellow men, they say.

Falange to hold demo in Callosa When workmen turned up to remove the cross last year they were prevented from doing so by many of the town’s residents.

pain's fascist movement, the Falange (Phalanx), was founded in 1933 by José Antonio Primo de Rivera. Although it never came to power, many of its members were absorbed into the military dictatorship of Francisco Franco, and although barely a murmur the ultraright party still has a small following here in Spain. One of their major objections is to the Historical memory Law which requires that monuments and street names that glorify the Franco regime are removed. One such local monument is ‘The cross of the Fallen’ in la plaza de la Iglesia, in Callosa del Segura which the local council has been dithering about since the law was first introduced. However the parish priest, Juan Bautista Samper, outside whose church the cross is sited, got so fed up of the council’s inability to make a decision that in September 2016 he decided to take matters into his own hands. He informed the council that he would be arranging for the cross to be removed, and would be passing to them for payment all resultant invoices. However, as the priest was making his arrangements local residents arranged a protest group raising over 5000 signatures in the process. Many of the residents said they were not concerned that the cross is adorned with plaques in memory to Franco and his supporters but that it has been in place outside the church of San Martin de Tours for over 70 years, since 1942 in fact, and it has now become part of the fabric of the town. As such the removal was put on standby until, according to the mayor, a consensus could be

reached by his council and local residents. Recently, however, the matter has once again been brought to a head, this time by the Falange themselves, who are currently organising a rally for this coming Saturday for which permission has now been obtained. The Callosa mayor Francisco Maciá, said that "it is a legal demonstration and everyone has the right to express himself if he considers it appropriate, as stated in the Constitution." He asks however that local residents stay away from the demonstration and don’t try to become involved themselves although the march will be passing through much of the town. It will eventually finish by the cross in the la plaza de la Iglesia where a statement will be read to party supporters calling for the permanence of the cross and the repeal of the Law of Historical memory. When asked by the Leader if the cross would still be removed a spokesman for the Callosa council declined to comment. The Historical Memory Law was introduced by the Socialist Government in 2007. Even though there has been a nominally conservative government since 2011, it has not reversed the law, although it has cut off some funding for operations related to it. The law requires the removal of objects that glorify the memory of Franco in the civil war but provides exceptions for “artistic, architectural or religious-artistic” reasons. In this case, local residents claim that the Socialist mayor has chosen to disregard these provisions.

Prescription charges under review by Minister Ministry of Health considering increase in prescription charges

The Minister of Health, Social Services and Equality, Dolors Montserrat, announced last Monday that she wants to increase the prescription charges for retirees who are in receipt of higher pensions.

Thos with an income of between 18,000 and 100,000 per annum are currently paying 18 euros whilst those above 100,000 euros pay a maximum of 60 euros. Montserrat added that in the last legislature the PP made the charge more fair and balanced.

In an interview with RNE-Ràdio 4 she stated that he wants to "review" the payments for retirees who receive a pension of between 18,000 and 100,000 euros. "We should adjust it rather better than is currently the case. Those who are better off should pay more, "said the minister, criticising the fact that a person with an income of 18,001 euros pays exactly the same as one who receives 100,000 euros per annum. Local students involved in start-up of first European Reusable rocket

ollowing its commissioning by the European Space Agency to make it’s first reusable rocket the Spanish technological multinational company GMV has invested in the programme at the Scientific Park of the Miguel Hernandez University (UMH) in Elche where both the company and the university will work together on the development of the Arion 1 and Arion 2 rocket launchers.

The GMV team will also participate alongside PLD Space in integration, qualification and support for the launch of Arion 1 and Arion 2 during the test flights and the commercial flights phase. These operations are scheduled to start toward the end of 2018, with the maiden flight of suborbital Arion 1 from launch base "The Arenosillo" in Huelva . At the technological level, Arion 1 will be the predecessor and technological demonstrator of a larger and more ambitious vehicle, Arion 2, whose mission will be to locate small satellites of up to 150 kilograms in Earth orbit. GMV's corporate endorsement of PLD Space has allowed the release of a total investment of 6.7 million euros, between private investment and public funding. Another year of records for Spain in respect of organ donations and transplants as the world leader for 25 consecutive years has improved on its figures once again with 43.4 donors per million population (a total of 2,018 donors) and 4,818 transplants, one of whom was a 94-year-old liver donor, another record by age. The waiting list has also been reduced for almost all organs and the figure of 5,673 patients in 2015 has been reduced to 5,477, a fall of 196. In total, last year, there were 2,994 kidney transplants, 1,159 liver patients, 281 heart, 307 pulmonary, 73 pancreas and four intestinal.

SPAIN A LEADER IN TRANSPLANTS FOR 25 YEARS

This project, called Liquid-Propulsion Stage Recovery (LPSR), allows PLD Space to recover the first stage of Arion 2 from space and thereby reduce the cost of access for small satellites. She said that all regions have surpassed the figure of 35 donors per million of population, but three have exceeded the 60 donors per million population (Cantabria, Basque Country and Navarra) and two 50 donors (Murcia and La Rioja). Bone marrow donors reached 281,969 last year. When the National Marrow Plan came into force

This particular transplant can cure diseases that especially affect the blood, such as leukaemia lymphomas and myelomas. Leukaemia is the most common of all childhood cancers. In 2016 the number of new bone marrow donors was doubled. A total of 74,397 were registered, giving an average of 6,200 new monthly donors, when this figure stood at 3,134 in 2015. Five years ago, new entrants per month did not exceed 600. Unfortunately there has been a decline in the number of young donors. At the beginning of this century, 19.8% of donors were aged between 15 and 29 years, the current percentage is 4.5%. In the case of adults aged between 30 and 44, the percentage has dropped from 16.9% to 9.8%. More than half of all donors (54.6%) are over 60 years, close to one third exceed 70 and almost 10% are over 80, with the highest ever recorded being a liver donor aged 94 years.

Judge says San Fulgencio Police can charge for night shift The Union of Police and Firemen, SPPLB, have said that the court Number 1 Elche have upheld the appeal filed by eight officers of San Fulgencioâ€™s the local police in which they claimed the right to receive an additional payment when working on the night shift . The payment was removed by the council in 2014 when they imposed rotating shifts. A union spokesman said, "this favourable ruling does nothing but confirm our rights as workers of the City Council. The SPPLB has previously tried to negotiate with the mayor, Carlos Ramirez (PP), so that we might avoid reaching the courts, but the Consistory has shown little sympathy not wanting either to negotiate or to provide answers to the questions that we have asked." In 2008 a system of permanent nights was introduced for a team of eight officers but it was replaced by a rolling shift system that included all officers, less the Chief of Police and two Inspectors, 2 years ago. At the

time the mayor said that there would be an additional fund for those local policemen working the night shift which would be distributed proportionally, and as long as productivity continued, that amount would be maintained. Some weeks later Councillor Pascual Sampere Mojica called all union representatives, saying that in the council had decided not to pay any additional money to agents, giving no explanation or reason. Agents belonging to the SPPLB union immediately filed a lawsuit against the council as they felt that the withdrawal of the additional night time payment was illegal. Now the judge has found in their favour saying that the officers are fully entitled to receive an additional payment for the proportion of their shift that is carried out overnight. The Council was also ordered to pay the costs of the judicial process.

Year starts with Fun Run Last Sunday saw over 330 runners taking part in the San Fulgencio II CARRERA DE REYES, Race of the Kings, which, despite the cold morning, also attracted the usual large crowd of spectators. There were races over a 5km course for all age groups including children from cadetes and juveniles through to adults and the largest group of all, the veterans, one of whom, Mateo Pesquer Campos, was the overall winner in a time of 15,29. The first woman home was Mari Carm Camacho Ballesta in 20,43.

Cala Mosca Appeal goes to PATIVAL

On Tuesday the members of the Orihuela Compromís attended the meeting on the Territorial Action Plan for the Green Coastal Infrastructure of the Region of Valencia (PATIVEL), which took place in Alicante. During the meeting the Eco socialist party made a case for Cala Mosca to be included within the PATIVEL, giving voice to the residents of Orihuela and Orihuela Costa who want to preserve this last stretch of the natural coastal environment. Compromís spokesperson for Orihuela, Cayetano Portugués, said that "we must all be aware of the enormous importance of Cala Mosca, one of the last undeveloped stretches of the coast." Portugués criticised the municipal government that "at no time has it listened to or considered the will of the local residents, demonstrating a complete disregards the people and their total indifference in protecting this particular area and our environment in general." Compromís for Orihuela said that "we have presented suggestions of how to deal with the problem and we have attended the necessary meetings with the Conselleria, now the groups that represent our City council should act with the same forcefulness." Finally, Cayetano Portugués said that "it is necessary to be aware of the fact that the final decision will be made by the Conselleria of Housing and Public Works which is directed by the PSOE. Therefore we have hopes that the socialists will come to the same decisions.

Sad state of the Orihuela Costa Dear Editor, I have read your front page article re no confidence in the Orihuela mayor and the issues still outstanding in Orihuela Costa. I have lived here now for ten years and the situation has gradually got worse every year. It is almost criminal the way the council in Orihuela treat the Costa, they provide absolutely no services, roads are disgraceful, rubbish collection totally inadequate etc etc. The only thing they do that affects the Costa is to allow building to go on and on with absolutely no concern or thought to the infrastructure or residents. The area is in a sad state of decline due to the complete lack of thought or responsibility to the people who live here. Where I live they built 68 social housing apartments, now after six years owners are moving in. The residents who have been here for ten years are now unable to park in the street near their homes, rubbish is all over the street as no extra provision has been made. Further down the new school has been opened, again no provision for parking or the extra vehicles on the road. The road to the school is a farm track! The boat they have installed on the roundabout in La Zenia is an absurd waste of money given the state of the area. I have read every week in the seven/eight English speaking papers for the past ten years about the council and the way they treat the coast, CLARO have raised this constantly for years, however have achieved absolutely nothing of any note. Now the FAOC, plus the political parties are raising it again, do they not see their efforts are disdainfully ignored and they are simply being insulted by the council and our own councillor Sofia Alvarez. Almoradi Monday Club

The "Almoradi Monday Club" meet every FIRST and THIRD MONDAY of the month at 4PM. Our meeting place is in the "Centro Social Rooms", Calle Antimo Illescas Plaza, on Calle Comunidad Valenciana, in Almoradi. (Calle Comunidad Valenciana is the road that the theatre is in. Go past the theatre going out of town towards Rojales and its a little Plaza before you get to the school. in the plaza its on the right hand side and entry is via a door next to "The Bar" with blue awnings outside.) The idea of this modern and progressive club is that people who speak ENGLISH and live in Almoradi or the surrounding area can meet one another on a regular but informal basis to talk together

and enjoy life in this Spanish community. The club activities will include social events, club lunches and evening meals in and around the local area, with guest speakers at meetings and entertainment when possible. We will also try to associate ourselves with other local clubs that hold other events including coach trips and anything that may be of interest to members. Orihuela City Christmas spend exceeds 270,000 euro The councillor said that more than 20,000 euro has been spent on the municipal Belen

Socialist Councillor Maria Garcia has said that the cost of Christmas activities in Orihuela City has exceeded 270,000 euro However she adds that she will have to wait another month to confirm her figures "because the government team is delaying access to the information in an attempt to obstruct our opposition work." She goes on to say that she has done her best to review all the invoices and bills and her analysis predicts the expenses incurred by the city council as being "excessive." She states that "some of the expenses are unnecessary and it is clear that they are very poorly managed in their distribution throughout the Municipal area, because they are concentrated in the city with virtually nothing provided for the Orihuela Costa and Pedanías". The councillor says that more than € 20,000 has been spent on the municipal Belen, spread between the acquisition of Belen itself, the security and its opening. García highlights one invoice for € 99 from a well-known bar in the city, for a wine drunk by the guests at the opening. She says "it is not so much the amount, which is quite small, is the fact that the invoice is being picked up by taxpayers.”

She also said that it will be interesting to see the number of visits made by the public to the nativity scene which had accessibility problems for children, mothers with pushchairs, the elderly and people with reduced mobility. “I think it will be the least visited Belen in the history of Orihuela” she said. Garcia also criticised the ever increasing cost of the 3 Kings Parade which in 2014 was € 80,000 in 2015 it rose to € 102,850 and this year we spent almost € 108,000 and there was a distinct lack of interests specifically for the children. “We want a good parade in Orihuela but this price is disproportionate" she said. In contrast, the deputy spokesman of the PSOE compared the activities and events provided by the Orihuela Council for the residents of the Orihuela Costa which totalled expenditure amounting to just 20,000 euro, the main spend being for the tree and the concert. "We have also had many complaints about the route and the lack of foresight to stop parking on the streets during the parade. She added that the 3 Kings Parade on the Orihuela Costa should be included in the main tender in order not to create this kind of inequalities.

Record figures for Alicante Airport Alicante-Elche finally closed 2016 having processed a total of 12,344,945 passengers, representing an increase of 16.7% over the previous year. International traffic increased by 18.6% with 11,026,764 passengers travelling to, or arriving from, overseas. Internally, there were 1,307,111 passengers, 3.2% more than in 2015. Broken down by international traffic nationalities, the countries that accounted for more passengers during 2016 were the United Kingdom, with 5,216,872 travellers ; Followed by Germany, with 877,155; Holland, with 770,798; Norway, with 754,408; Belgium, with 581,318, and Sweden, with 466,366 travellers. In terms of operations, according to data provided by Aena, the airport in Alicante-Elche managed a total of 87,113 flights. The number of international increased by 20.9%, with a total of 71,931 while domestic commercial flights increased by 3.6% to 14,725 operations.

In December, the traffic grew 15% over the same month last year, with 700,220 passengers. Finally, the goods transported during the month of December exceeded 452 tonnes, a 4.6% increase over the same period in 2015.

Hopkins students aim for International career T wo of the finest singers on the Costa will be performing together in the forthcoming production of An Evening with Andrew Lloyd Webber which takes place at the ORIHUELA Costa Resort at La Zenia on Saturday 28th January. Rebecca Holt, at just 19 years of age, has already carved a professional career for herself singing in celebrated venues up and down the Costa.

A pupil of professional singer, conductor and singing teacher, Nigel Hopkins, Rebecca has already received a Diploma in Musical Theatre Performance from the London College of Music, and is much sought after from quality musical venues on the Costa. She has been invited to be the only entertainer to perform alongside Joe Longthorne at the Benidorm Palace in April.

Verity Hall, again at 19 years old, has had a meteoric rise in the local musical community in the past 18 months. Under the tutelage of her teacher Nigel Hopkins she has made many acclaimed performances just in the last

Last May she performed with local Chamber Choir, In Harmony, and the professional Mediterranean Symphony Orchestra singing Vivaldi's 'Gloria' to great acclaim. She will perform with the same musicians this May, singing the famous John Rutter Requiem. As well as their own solos, the two girls will unite in a performance of the very well-known 'Pie Jesu' from Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'Requiem' one of the world's best-loved pieces of music. There are two shows on the day - at both 2pm and 8pm - and tickets can be obtained from La Ponderosa Gift Shop at La Zenia C.C., or at The Card Place at both Punta Prima and Benimar. Further tickets are available at the Debra Charity shops at both San Fulgencio and Quesada. The shows are supporting the local, most worthwhile charity, Reach Out.

How does your garden grow?

have always enjoyed gardening. I don't mean the heavy-duty grind of growing vegetables, cutting hedges or mowing the lawn, but setting and growing plants that actually do something to lift the spirit. I like looking at, and admiring other people’s gardens, visiting National Trust and other gardens in the UK and finding out more about particular plants that take my fancy. Of course, when we moved to Spain, my gardening habits had to abruptly change. Initially, I was faced with a barren plot, and mostly covered with those dreaded reddish-brown outdoor tiles that the Spanish love so much. I was fortunate, because there was a soil border where I could indulge my gardening fancies, and where a helpful neighbour encouraged me to install an underground watering system to ensure survival of most of my newly acquired plants during some of those blistering hot summer months in the Costa Blanca. Later, when we moved to the Canary Islands, we had another problem. I was faced with the torment of living in an apartment with no outdoor space. The best that I could achieve was a few, mostly miserable looking pot plants on a table close to one of the few windows that had some light. Although it was only planned as a temporary move, I think it was one of my most miserable experiences in Spain. How I craved for an outdoor space where I could grow a few plants. It was at that point that I realised how much plants and the opportunity for a little light gardening meant to me. When we finally moved to our present home, we were fortunate in

finding a property where we could have a garden with shrubs and maybe plant a small tree or two. Once again, the builders had unhelpfully laid most of the outdoor space with those wretched patio tiles, but these were quite easily removed and replaced with soil. Beneath the soil we installed a watering system, and covered the soil with plastic sheeting to cut down on the weeding, and after a final layer of stones, we began to create our garden.

I am not a great lover of pots on patios, since we are surrounded by neighbours who, in an initial surge of gardening enthusiasm, buy a collection of those shiny blue, concrete pots, install a few beautiful plants and then forget to water them. Many patios that I see are little more than graveyards for stumps of plants withering in these blue, shiny concrete planters. Whilst it is a huge generalisation, there is some truth in the fact that many Spanish people have little patience or understanding of plants and gardens. Their first inclination when they see bare soil is to concrete it over and lay yet more patio tiles. Over the years that we have lived in Spain, I have learned not to grow plants that I used to love in the UK. It took me several years to finally understand the need to grow plants that suit local growing conditions. I don't mean cactus either; I don't mind some of the non-prickly, flowering varieties, but they are not really my favourite plants. For me, this has meant moving away from growing azaleas, rhododendrons and camellias that were my favourites when I lived in Dorset. I now grow plants that include lavender, roses, anthuriums, aloe vera and even geraniums, which I always detested in the UK, to ensure all round colour and interest, as well as the ability to survive the excessive heat, dust and windy conditions that are now part of life in our Canarian garden. Roses grow exceptionally well here, and I have several that are many years old and need to be replaced. However, when trying to find new roses in local garden centres I am told that they rarely stock roses, since they do not grow well in the Canary Islands. Well, they do grow well in our garden and although I feed them from time to time, I never have to spray them against black spot and other conditions that can be the bane of gardeners in the UK. Although many of our UK and Irish friends understand and appreciate our small garden, the reaction from our Spanish friends and neighbours is usually one of amused tolerance, and with great concern

expressed about what they perceive as a large water bill, as well as all the extra work that they think is necessary in maintaining even a small garden. Too much is often made of national characteristics and cultural differences; however, for me, the love or hate of gardening is one of the big differences that I see between British and Spanish people. For me, it is time and money well spent. Our dog, Bella, enjoys helping me in the garden too. El Rancho Bowls Club. The end of the Christmas break found The Broncos entertaining Mazarron Mariners; despite fielding a rink short Broncos didn’t put on a bad display, taking two rinks and the overall shots by a small margin. In the afternoon The Pintos were at San Miguel playing The Comets and put on a good display taking 2 rinks and drawing a third, always a good result away from home. Particularly at San Miguel, without a wood in hand for a few weeks. Friday morning found The Mustangs playing host to La Manga Crusaders, in glorious weather which can make you feel just a little smug. Crusaders came in their usual good humour; they are always a pleasure to play, despite expecting to struggle on a rink so different to their own. But they have an attitude the same as ours, bowls is about the bowls and good company, the result being secondary. Although some of the rinks had quite large shot differences, the play was close, but The Mustangs took all the points in a good fun match. The Raiders meanwhile were playing The Royals at Horadada, who are a very strong team for the division, so although we took a bit of a pasting, we mustn’t let ourselves lose heart. It is only a game and sometimes we take on stronger players, as long as the company is good, we will improve and enjoy our bowls, and losing doesn’t mean you haven’t played well. The theme continued with the long trip to El Cid with La Siesta picking up a single point gained by Joy Gardiner,Fred Charman with Bill and Sue Jordan drawing 19 shots apiece. Overall shots being 105-63. A good result in the Friendly with Ann Edgerton, Molly Russell with Mike and Florence Edwards winning on the final end 18-17. Although Mel had a score of 133 he lost out to Kevin and the last singles saw Jim S vs Stuart with Jim hitting a 180 (MOTM for El Capitan) and 68 game shot to make final score 8-4 to the home side. by Barry Latham Here we go for the second half of the season. Best of bowling to everyone. The Explorers faced Greenland Maples who had a strong side out and won 8 – 6. We did very well on two rinks and through them we gained an extra two points. Alex Whyte, Dave Hadaway and Jim Manning won by 21 shots and Tom Spencer, Mike Smith and Anne Stone got twice as many as their opponents. Nice to see Jim back on the green. In the Discovery Division the Pathfinders have started well with a 9 - 5 win over San Luis. We had Colin and Lynne Armitage plus Clive Pratt winning by 24 shots. John Morgan, Paul Tregoing and Mo Taylor got ten more shots than their opponents while John Withers, Martin Butler and Alan Wilcock were 15 shots to the good and Dave Taylor, Lorita Rae and Dave McGaw managed a draw. Captain Dave was a happy fellow when the Winter League entertained Bonalba as we won 10 – 2 with Dave, Jean Perchard, Barbara Forshaw and Janet Parsons winning handsomely but not to be outdone Shirley Hadaway, Phil Pape, Steve Douglas and Anne Stone had the highest winning rink. Birthday Girl (well nearly) Maureen Kidd also won helped by Mike Stone, Roger Stacey and Dave O’Sullivan. Last as usual but not least Barry Latham, Peter Parsons, Wendy Latham and Dave Bulfield won on the last end by two. Keeping up the good work the Berleen came away with a good win thanks to Alex Whyte, Jim Freeman, Mike Surch and Ray Gardiner. The Sharks seemed to be all at sea when they played away against Emerald Isle Cavaliers. They were put to the sword by 10 to 4. Jim Manning, Ron Maiden and Margaret McLaughlin won as did Shirley Hadaway, Dave O’Sullivan and Hilary Cronk with another highest winning rink. Into Div B and a crunch match with the Seagulls and the Dolphins clashing. A match of to and fro with someone winning then drawing then losing and so on. With each winning three rinks it went down to shots which the Seagulls managed by ten. Seagulls winning rinks were Colin Armitage, Barry Latham and Len Daniels. For the Dolphins it was Don Harrison, Mike Smith and John Rae.

Our first outing of the year was to Las Colinas where the lightning fast greens proved to be a problem for most of us. The scoring wasn't great but, as usual, we all enjoyed our game and the nice weather. Thank you Las Colinas and we look forward to returning in July for the Pub Championship. Slick greens, some very tight pin positions and very tight lies along with the windy conditions meant it was a tough day to score at Las Colinas. Only 5 players cracked the 30 point barrier and top score in the whole field was only 34 shared by Ron Stenhouse and Tony Smale which emphasized the trickiness of the day. At least the chill soon went out of the morning air once the sun heated up and added a touch of warmth. There were three single first round match-play knockout games took place with John Aitchinson beating Hugh Reilly 4&2, Bjorn Pettersson beating his wife Eve 3&1 and the other game saw Theo Boelhouwer eliminate Phil deLacy by a 4 & 2 margin. In the day’s main competition NTP’s went to Roger Webb (Hole 5), Carmell McCann (Hole 7), Theo Boelhouwer (Hole 10), Eve Pettersson (Hole 14) and Richard McCann (Hole 17). Bronze category’s top five were Jacqui Rust 25 points, 4th on c/b also with 25 points, Michael Inns, 3rd on 28, Marge Birtwistle, 2nd with 32 Carmel McCann and Ron Stenhouse taking top spot with 34 points. Silver division saw John Aitchinson with 27 points 5th, also with 27 winning on c/b Theo Boelhouwer in 4th, Ken Flaherty got 3rd with 28, Geoff Giddey took 2nd with 30and Linda Cain took 1st place with 31 points. Gold division saw Glyn Denman with 28 points in 5th position, Stephen Locke 4th with 29, in 3rd position was Barry Roehrig with 33 the same score as Paul Guest 2nd and Tony Smale 34 earned him top spot. The best front 9 not in the prizes with 17 points was Norman Mcbride and the best back nine also with 17 points was Roger Cain on c/b. The Abacus was won by Roger Webb. El Plantio2 Golf Society On 10th January, a healthy turnout of 23 members and guests competed in a 'Yellow Ball' competition, in which teams of three or four pairings score double Stableford points when each individual 'Yellow Ball' is used. Should this ball be lost - either finding a watery grave, or over the fence, a deduction of 2 shots is made to the final total. Nearest the pins : Hole 1, Alan Janes - Hole 5, Claude De Wamme. A kind donation of Belgian Chocolates by Claude De Wamme resulted in Ian Craig being nearest the pin on Hole 8. 3rd Place - Penny Goujon, Mireille Michels, Keith Smith, Ian Henderson - 117 points. 2nd Place - Dave Southwell, Mike Davies, Henry Mellor - 118 points. 1st Place - Roger - a guest, Claude De Wamme, Lawrence Wanty 122 points. The cold may explain the lower than average scores in our 2 ball better ball competition which was won with a total of 42 pts by the deadly duo of Dave Pulling and Nick Campbell. In second place beating two other pairings on a back nine count back were Marleen Billen and John Shervell with 41 pts. On Wednesday we played our normal weekly stableford competition and this week the stand out performance came from Rod Doel who scored a tremendous 39 pts to win Category 2 even though the majority of us found points hard to come by. The top 3 in each Category were as follows: Cat 1. 1st Lindsay Forbes 36 pts 2nd Dave Pulling 36 pts 3rd Friedel Knebel 30 pts Cat 2. 1st Rod Doel 39 pts 2nd Mike Mahony 34 pts 3rd Ron Percival 31 pts 2's Club: Rod Doel, Terry Field, Bryan Neal and Friedel Knebel On Friday we played a 6x6x6 with one score counting on the first six holes, two on the second six and three on the final six holes. The winners with a very good score of 86 pts were Terry Field, Bryan Neal, Mike Chapman and Ellen Drakesmith. In second place were Geoff Biggerstaff, John Drakesmith, Friedel Knebel and Annemarie Weisheit.

ROCKETS GOLF SOCIETY The first game of 2017 was played at our home course Vistabella which was in very good condition, with excellent fast running greens. Looking at the low scoring, our members did not take advantage of it. Small turnout on this very cold and miserable day could have had an effect on the scoring. Winner of the Gold Category Mick Hithersay, followed in Second place Rob Swift and in Third place Arfer Williams. Winner of the Silver Category Geoff Wild, with Rocket Ron in Second place, and Paul Mutter in third.

Putting Practice During this series or articles I have repeatedly referred to the need for positive practise before your round commences. If you have not allowed sufficient time before your start time for a full warm up practise session you MUST find some time to practise your putting which for golfers of all standards is a key part of the game. I have spoken in the past of the need to practise success rather than failure by holing a number of short length putts rather than trying to hole 30 footers. I also have a number of other tips that will help your putting during the course of the round and which will assist to eliminate nerves during pressure situations. Firstly, practise putting to a 1 Euro coin because this will alter your perception of the size of the hole. You will be in a win-win situation because if you miss the coin it will not feel like a failure because it is such a small target but when you start to actually putt at the hole it will seem large compared with the coin and this will give you more confidence. Secondly, practise the putting ladder. What is this I hear you say? Take five golf balls an attempt to knock the first ball a distance of 20ft. Aim to knock the second ball 15ft,the third 10ft and so on. You will gain a touch and feel that you would not develop by putting at a hole where your focus is on holing the ball. During the 1993 Ryder Cup at the Belfry, Fred Couples could be seen doing a similar ‘practise drill’ with short wedge shots where he attempted to hit successive shot five yards further than the previous shots. So you see even the worlds best develop practise methods aimed at improving touch and feel during their actual round of golf. No relief despite sweeping changes

ROJALES NETBALLIN THE PINK Rojales Netball Club finished 2016 by taking part in a Charity Pink Weekend at La Manga Sports Club. Fifteen teams entered this charity event and Rojales came runners-up. A great effort by all the team and the champagne flowed freely that evening. And to put an end to the first half of the season the Club purchased sweatshirts for all its members and presented them at their Christmas party.

his much awaited local derby at Los Arcos, saw 2 teams at the opposite ends of the table, both desperate to win but for very different reasons. Before the start of play, Torry sat on the edge of the drop zone, anxiously looking above them as the gap to the pack widens, whilst opponents Orihuela were handily placed in 9th, with the play offs in sight. Pedreño took his men to Pinatar Arena midweek, where played Shanghai Shenxin in an entertaining goalless friendly. But that´s where the problem lies, they can´t score goals! Although they should have been awarded a goal last weekend against Villarreal ´C´, when a shot off the bar clearly bounced behind the line, the fact still remains that they had 2 glorious chances to blast the ball home beforehand. Build up play has been good for most of the season, so let´s hope that new acquisition Kana can add to the teams meagre goals tally. He replaces Hugo, who surprisingly has been released from the club, having scored 4 goals in 16 appearances. And in a completely reshaped lineup the former Elche forward got his chance with Diabe and Iles as the three debutants lined up alongside Buba, Vicente and Calzado who were all returning from suspension. The wholesale changes were a calculated gamble by manager Pedreño who is running out of time if ‘the whites’ are to avoid the drop. He knows that he needs to start picking up points now but the opening period of

this local derby brought him anything but comfort as his team took their time to settle into this game. Indeed there was little of note from Torry in the opening 45 as the home side dominated large swathes of the early exchanges. So there was no surprise when, midway through the period, Antonio opened the scoring for Orihuela. A low cross from Ayo on the right found him with acres of space and the simple task of tapping in from close range. Surprisingly there was no response from the visitors as El Escorpion continued to dictate the play. Indeed Torry were spared going further behind following a disallowed goal and a glaring miss by the home side, but on 38 minutes the long overdue second came when Ruben created space, before unleashing an unstoppable drive from the edge of the box. At this stage it was difficult to see how Pedreño could turn the game around. Unfortunately the outcome was scarcely evident as at the start of the 2nd period the

CARP R US The match on 12th January, Round 6 of the Winter Series, was fished at Nancys. As with the previous week, although conditions during the match were very good, light wind and very mild, the fish were not interested in feeding. Tom Marshall won the match with 4.00kg using maggot and feeder tactics. Second was Mark Foden with 3.24kg caught using caster and worm, third was Graham Ledley with a single carp caught on corn and weighing 2.58kg and fourth was Ann Fowles, continuing her good form this series, with 2.40kg (another single carp).
