There’s an accident waiting to happen on Calle Otelo in Villamartin, which is being used as a short cut by people driving between Villamartin and Playa Flamenca. Despite a multitude of official requests since 2007 from Residents’ Association President, Ron Burks, the Ayuntamiento has chosen to ignore every one. Ron can provide evidence that each of his requests has been stamped as received by the Ayto, but no response has ever been made to his requests. “It’s a ludicrous situation,“ Ron remarked “and, before long, there will be a terrible accident.” The only people who need to access the road are those who live or have holiday properties there,
many of whom have children and pets. The Residents’ Assn successfully got the speed limit lowered to 30 kph and signage was erected, but drivers ignore the signs and continue to speed down the road, often at more than double the speed limit. This has become a great area of concern for the permanent and holiday residents and there have been a few near misses on the sharp bend due to excessive speed. Children between the ages of 2 and 15 are regular holiday visitors to the street and there are family pets who are at risk of being injured or killed by these inconsiderate drivers. “I would welcome visitors from local political parties, the Policia Local and members of the Ayuntamiento to discuss what can be done to make the road safer” said Ron. “We want to do everything we can to avoid a tragedy that is waiting to happen”.

The Queen has acknowledged Los Montesinos Author Andrew Atkinson following a copy of his book 'Formby's Lost Love' being sent to Her Majesty as a birthday gift to celebrate her 90th birthday. The Queen hit the headlines recently when it was revealed that she is a big fan of Wigan born ukulele legend George Formby. Andrew, 59, received a letter from Lady-in-Waiting Susan Hussey saying: 'The Queen wishes me to thank you for your letter with which you sent a copy of your book Formby's Lost Love, for Her Majesty on the occasion of her ninetieth birthday. 'The Queen was very touched you have given her a present. I am to thank you, very much.' In July it was revealed to the world that The Queen was an avid fan of Formby: "I know all his songs, and I can sing them. I love George Fornby," said The Queen. It was reported that The Queen, who celebrated her 90th birthday on April 21, received a letter from the George Formby Appreciation Society asking her to be its President. Her correspondence secretary noted: 'I don't honestly think, if you don't mind me saying so, this is appropriate; you're the head of the armed forces, the head of the Church of England, I don't think you can be president of the George Formby Appreciation Society.' The Queen replied: 'Well, I do see that, but you see I
love George Formby'. 'Really?', responded the secretary. 'Oh yes. I know all his songs and I can sing them.' The Royal Family invited ukulele star Formby, who died in Preston on March 6, 1961, aged 56, to play for them at Buckingham Palace, when The Queen and her sister Princess Margaret were girls. Formby, whose hits include My Little Stick of Blackpool Rock, When I'm Cleaning Windows, and Leaning on a Lamppost, also performed in front of The King and Queen at a Royal Variety Performance. Two Royal Variety Performances took place in 1955, in London and Blackpool, with George Formby and Morecambe & Wise among the performers. Grant for repairs to Seafront Walkway
Torrevieja mayor, José Manuel Dolon, announced last week a 1,259,635 euro investment on the Paseo del Dique de Levante that runs along the marina facade adjacent to the Real Club Nautico. He said that it is no longer acceptable that those undertaking one of the area’s most popular walks from the Paseo de Juan Aparicio to the lighthouse in the Puerto Salinero, a route that is used daily by thousands of people, have to endure such a general lack of cleanliness and disrepair to many of it’s wooden timbers a large number of which are no longer fit for purpose put their safety at risk as they pass along the Torrevieja seafront. He said that as a result of continuing incidents, repairs would be carried out as part of a first phase to a stretch of about 200 meters using a compound of cement and fibreglass. However, those timbers that are removed and are found to be in good condition will be reused to extend the area of repairs that municipal technicians are able to carry out. The deterioration to large parts of the walkway was first reported over four years ago but it is only now that the council have been able to find the funds to effect many of the necessary repairs. The mayor said that he has also submitted bids for financial assistance to carry out the repairs to the presidency of the Generalitat, the Department of Public Works and the Directorate General responsible for ports for those areas of the front that are outside municipal jurisdiction.

Fear of widespread terrorism redesigns Tourist Map

or the first time ever the Valencian Community has received over 1 million overseas tourists during the month of July. A total of 1,032,582 international tourists arrived in the community showing an increase of 13.4% from last year, according to figures produced by the National Statistics Institute (INE). There was a significant increase in the number of visitors arriving from France (+ 54.1%), with a total of 236,500 tourists. Italian visitors increased by + 18.7%, Nordic + 15.3% and British holidaymakers were up + 4.7%. Following the recent massacre in Nice and the attempted coup in Turkey, travellers are undoubtedly seeking new destinations for their summer holidays with Sicily and Spain benefitting the most. The destinations that are considered risky for summer holidays are naturally deserted by tourists. Turkey is one of the examples – in 2014 the country was the sixth most desired destination, but now, according to many tour operators, the county has almost disappeared from their offers. The same is true for Tunisia considered unsafe since 2015, after the massacre on the Sousse beach and the massacre at the Bardo museum. The con-
sequences of the Nice massacre in France have not yet been calculated, but the flow of tourists has almost halved in the country since the Paris attacks in November. Finally, the amount of flights to Egypt, Morocco and the whole North Africa was reduced as well. Greece has also reported weak season thanks to the masses of migrants coming to the country. Spain on the other hand benefitted immensely from the impact of fear since the country is regarded as a safe destination for summer holidays. The Canary and Balearic Island even reported an increase in demand of 30-35%. Indeed Spain’s strategies to attract visitors and increase the number of tourists have caused the density per square meter in some areas of the country to exceed the limits of what is reasonable according to the critics. In this situation, some municipalities put restrictions on the number of tourists booking their holiday within the communities. Fuerteventura put a 2.5 million cap on the numbers that it can accommodate without jeopardizing the quality of life. Whilst tourists are looking for sun, which is free, they are also consuming services and resources.

Ever wondered what happened to that stolen bike? T
he Civil Guard has arrested two men in Torrevieja, both Spanish nationals, 31 and 36 years of age, who are alleged to have stolen at least 16 bicycles, including two racing models worth about 6,500 euros which they then sold on to a Moroccan based in North Africa. A spokesman explained in a statement last Friday that the investigation began after a neighbour became suspicious after the number of bikes that were being lodged in a community storeroom. Security cameras were installed with the film showing the two suspects regularly bringing in and moving out numerous bicycles. During the investigation the two men are said to have confessed to agents that the bicycles were sold immediately after being stolen. Police recovered 16 bikes, valued at more than 11,000 euros. However, they were sold on for extremely low amounts with two racing bikes, worth 6,500 euros, said to have brought just 150 euros The two robbers are currently in police custody although the Moroccan who is said to have received the bikes has so far managed to evade the Guardia. Learning to do something creative actually has a very calming effect on the brain. It’s incredibly relaxing and rewarding, and a pastime you can
take up even if you have restricted mobility. Over the years I’ve known people reduce their medication, overcome stress and depression and discover an ability they never dreamed was there, simply by learning to draw and paint. Even those with serious illnesses have found relief and companionship in the friendly atmosphere of an art class. I always encourage beginners to spend the first few weeks learning to draw accurately as it is such an important building block to becoming a good artist, and all initial equipment and exercises are provided. After that they can choose whether to try watercolours, oil, pastels or acrylics I currently have two classes each week; Monday mornings at PALS Social Club, La Siesta (10.30-1.00 pm), and Thursday mornings are at La Herradura Restaurant (next to the REPSOL Garage) in Los Montesinos from 10.00 – 12.15pm. he provincial government of Alicante has allocated 100,000 euro for the reforestation of woodland in the municipalities of the Guardamar del Segura and Redován as well as measures to ensure the containment of the Tomicus piniperda (common pine shoot beetle) that breeds so rapidly in recently dead and dying trees. The grant will be added to the 66,000 euro already allocated by the two local councils. Deputy Protection and Land Management Councillor, Javier Sendra, said that "the provincial government is making a big commitment toward the restoration and reforestation of local forests because we want an environmentally sustainable province". He added that he was all too aware of problems of the bark beetle that appears every year during the summer months in forest areas suffering with drought. “The work will include the removal of dry and dead trees, containment of the advance of the beetle by crushing infested live trees and the installation of traps and baits Sendra said that the tasks will be

C.L.A.R.O. makes wide ranging budget proposals
A
public hearing took place in the Playa Flamenca office of the Town Hall on 2 September. It was attended by the Mayor of Orihuela, the Budget Councillor and several other councillors including the Councillor for the Coordination of the Coast. The hearing offered the opportunity for coastal residents to make proposals for next year’s municipal budget. There was a good attendance and participation from political parties, the Federation of Associations of Orihuela Costa and a number of individual residents. On behalf of C.L.A.R.O., Bob Houliston presented a 10 page document to the Mayor and members of the government. It covered a wide range of subjects and contained 18 specific proposals.

Given the size of the population, especially in summer and with the advent of millions of visitors each year to La Zenia Boulevard Commercial Centre, it is irresponsible and dangerous not to have a police station open 24 hours a day. Other important services like national police, Guardia Civil, ambulance and fire brigade would be housed in the Centre.

By way of introduction, Bob Houliston said C.L.A.R.O. welcomed this opportunity for residents of Orihuela Costa to make proposals for next year’s budget. Orihuela Costa with over 30,000 registered residents, equal to Orihuela city, and some 50,000 rate paying property owners accounted for 60% of the revenues of the municipality but received less than 10% of the value of municipal services. There was a huge deficit of services and investments. The prospects for next year’s budget were expected to show a €10 million increase in the income of the municipality compared to the present budget approved in 20012, mainly due to an expanding coastal population and a revival of construction in Orihuela Costa with

the corresponding increase in municipal revenue from building taxes. Moreover, according to reports, there would be some €10 million available for investments, principally revenue from the sale of land in Orihuela Costa some years ago. There had been general political consensus that 40% of the proceeds from the sale of land would be devoted to investments in Orihuela Costa. The 2017 budget would therefore be an opportunity, Bob Houliston said, to begin to redress the historical deficit of services and investment in Orihuela Costa. The C.L.A.R.O. proposals contained in the document presented to the Mayor covered 6 main areas.
Infrastructure, street maintenance, street cleaning and rubbish removal C.L.A.R.O. urged the government to finance the so-called “via paralela” a long standing project to complete an internal road, parallel to the N332, extending from La Regia to Los Balcones. This project was urgently needed to reduce congestion on the N332 aggravated by the opening of La Zenia Boulevard Commercial Centre. Two pedestrian footbridges were urgently needed. One over the motorway between La Regia and Lomos de Cabo Roig where pedestrians are obliged to use an increasingly busy road bridge which exposes them to serious danger. A pedestrian footbridge was also needed in Alameda del Mar where pedestrians from highly populated urbanisations risk their lives crossing the N332 to go to the beach. Finally, the notorious problem of deficient street cleaning and rubbish removal had to be tackled with greatly increased financial and material resources. An Ecopark where green rubbish could be shredded and converted to saleable pellets for fuel or fertiliser, as in Pilar de la Horadada, could profitably help solve the problem of uncollected green rubbish which is a constant eyesore in Orihuela Costa. Parks and Gardens Lack of maintenance and investment in Orihuela Costa’s so-called parks and gardens, often no more than wastelands, resulted in an appearance of environmental neglect and abandon. Only half of the so-called parks and gardens are covered by the existing maintenance contract. Since 2015 it is a legal obligation for local governments to maintain ALL public parks and gardens, irrespective of their administrative status. Sufficient budgetary finance is imperative to improve the state of Orihuela Costa’s parks and gardens. Emergency Services Centre It is essential to complete the construction of the Emergency Services Centre started as long ago as 2007. There is no local police office open when
C.L.A.R.O. proposed opening a second Health Centre to deal with the health needs of an expanding population most of which live far away from the Cabo Roig-Campoamor Health Centre with poor communication links. A Day Care Centre with medical supervision providing activities for retired people is needed and could be easily be located in the Savia Care Home in Villamartin. From the annual budget of €2m, the Alameda de Mar Civic Centre should be endowed with facilities and resources for all residents comparable to those enjoyed in Orihuela city. Culture and Fiestas There are no facilities on Orihuela Costa for those who organise choirs, theatre groups, and a range of social activities or a Library for leisure and study which all towns in Spain equal to the size of Orihuela Costa enjoy - Orihuela city has two auditoriums and 3 libraries. A Cultural Centre should be financed and constructed without delay. The ideal site would be in the parking area of La Zenia Boulevard, part of which is municipally owned. It would be a folly and a waste to locate such an important facility away from the centre of Orihuela Costa as is being suggested. A share of the €1.5m annual budget to support Orihuela Costa groups such as AIDOC, to organise local fiestas is also needed. C.L.A.R.O. supported a detailed proposal put forward at the hearing by a well known local resident which would be located in the La Zenia Boulevard parking area and would cover the varied cultural needs of residents. Environment The main proposal put forward was for active municipal support to Save Cala Mosca, the last green area on Orihuela Costa threatened with the construction of 1.500 new houses. Thanks to C.L.A.R.O. and the intervention of the European Parliament construction has been paralysed and the project is under review by the regional government. Many other subjects were covered by the C.L.A.R.O. document presented at the budget hearing including freezing local taxes which have increased substantially in recent years, decentralisation of services and manpower to Orihuela Costa, improving the inadequate Sewage system, Education, Sports and Transport. The Mayor gave some indications of investments which might result soon from the reassignment of unused finance (remanentes). The ball is now in the court of the Orihuela government to present a budget for 2017 which can meet the important needs put forward by C.L.A.RO. and others at the hearing and begin to redress the historical deficit of services and investments in Orhuela Costa.

Illegal immigrants escape into Torrevieja
A
number of small patera’s landed approximately 70 illegal immigrants, all thought to be of Algerian origin, in the early hours of Wednesday morning off the Southern Costa Blanca and Costa Calida coastlines. It is thought that about 20 landed in Torrevieja and the Marina Alta, 9 of which were seen jumping overboard in an area of ??cliffs after crashing their boat. They
were subsequently arrested in la playa del Moraig. However 5 are known to have fled into Torrevieja after they landed their boat between the beaches of Los Locos and El Cura. The first of the two boats arrived in Torrevieja with about nine immigrants on board, including four children aged between 11 and 17 years, at about 04.15 am. Security forces intercepted the children, although the adults ran off toward the town. The deserted boat was constructed solely of wood. It was about 4 meters long and equipped with a 30 hp outboard motor. The children were taken to the University Hospital of Torrevieja in where they were medically examined and provided with food. All were said to be in perfect health. After confirming that all were minors they were transferred to a centre for immigrants in Alicante. Four hours later, at about 0830 hours, nine Algerian immigrants disembarked from a boat off the coast of Benitachell. They jumped into the but were intercepted by officers from the Javea Civil Guard and the Benitachell local police. All those arrested are said to be between 25 and 40 years and in good health. They were transferred to a local detention centre as a preliminary step prior to their return to Algeria.

BOGUS DOCTOR ARRESTED

Police have arrested a man who allegedly practiced as a doctor in an underground clinic in Torrevieja despite not being accredited as a doctor or a medical practitioner. The arrest was made last week by officers from the Valencian Generalitat. Following complaints made to the regional police from patients who were "dissatisfied" with the care at the centre an investigation confirmed that the man had no formal qualifications. During an inspection by police carried out at the centre, where most of the clients are said to be British, the officers found all kinds of medical equipment for the treatment patients as well as material and apparatus for performing analytical treatments that the practitioner undertook. It was also found that neither the clinic nor the alleged doctor was registered in any official agency of Valencia or of Spain. The regional police arrested the man, who was later transferred to the judicial authority in Torrevieja. The investigation is part of the Ecosub operation carried out by the Police from the Generalitat, into the underground economy that aims to fight against unfair competition, labor exploitation, fraud and tax avoidance. So far, this year, 210 illegal activities have been closed down and 47 arrests have been made. In May of this year a bogus doctor was arrested in full whites working as a professor in Figures Hospital.

Popular Brit dies COOLEST SUMMER IN 30 YEARS in San Javier Fire August across the Valencia region closed having achieved an average temperature of 23.9 degrees, 02. Degrees cooler than normal. In addition, there was an average of 15.8 litres per square metre of rainfall, 20% less than recorded between 1981 and 2010. The combined conclusion is that, at least for the first half of the month, it was one of the coolest Augusts in the last 30 years.
There was standing room only as Shelagh, her coffin draped with the Union Flag, was remembered by all her family and friends. The body of a 65-year-old British woman was found lying on the bedroom floor close to her burntout bed. Investigators believe the victim may have suffocated after accidentally setting the mattress alight with a cigarette. Two fire tenders attended the scene last Friday morning after they had been alerted to the accident in Las Palomas in San Javier by her 74 year husband. Bomberos had to break down the door to gain access to the house but she was already dead by the time they reached her. A spokesman said that the fire
had burnt out and everything was cold suggesting that it had occurred overnight. Initial investigations by the Judicial Police suggest that the incident could have been accidental and that the victim may have fallen asleep while smoking a cigarette. The woman was identified as Shelagh Hall, an active member of the Orihuela Costa Branch of the Royal British Legion, which she regularly attended with her husband Bernie. A neighbour, who knew the family well, said that they were a
very normal, loving, caring couple and what happened could only be the result of a horrifically tragic accident. “Shelagh was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother; a truly kind soul. Her husband and family are obviously hugely devastated.� The body was released for burial following an autopsy carried out by the Department of Forensic Medicine in Cartagena. The funeral took place at the Rocomer Crematorium in San Petro del Pinatar last Friday.

The Spanish meteorological office has released the data this week explaining how there has been particularly hot periods in the month, but there were also considerable cold drops, and so the average across the month balanced out as being cooler and dryer. Some places did reach exceptionally high temperatures on the
19th of the month, such as Ontinyent and Villena, and Fontanars on the 4th, all of which had recorded temperatures over 40 degrees. In the Alicante province, the maximum average temperature peaked at 35.1 degrees, warmer than both Castellon where 34.3 was the average, and in Valencia province where 32.2 was the average.
As for rainfall, despite many areas not seeing any rain, the month qualifies as being average, although some places were wetter than normal. Two thirds of all the moth´s rainfall was recorded on the 9th and 10th when 61.7 litres per square metre landed in Chiva, whereas along the coastal zone rainfall failed to reach 5 litres.

Consul changes rules on free school transport
T
he Ministry of Education has tightened the conditions for the granting of free transport to students who reside less than three kilometres from their schools. This is a similar measure to that introduced on the Orihuela Costa last year which met with such opposition from schools and from parents. Last year, the Consell left schools and municipalities to make their own judgements on the granting of such transport but now they seem to have changed their stance with the decision that the 3km rule will apply to all schools and transport throughout the autonomy. The change was unveiled last week by the president of La Federación de Padres, Enric
Valor, Raul Alos, and the spokesman for the APA's in Torrevieja, Francisco Pacheco. They said that, according to preliminary data collected by parents, up to 75% of students who were able to use the free bus system last school year will now be excluded from it. Many parents who say they have contacted schools to find out just how the measurements will be taken have said that they were refused the information. Within hours of the announcement being made a number of schools, together with the Federation of Parents, issued a denuncia on the consell whilst requesting a meeting with the Ministry to try to clarify the situation prior to
the start later this week of the new school year. They warn that unless the new rules are made absolutely clear within the next day or two there will be absolute chaos in the city as many dozens of children will queue for free school transport on the first day of school only to be refused by monitors. They say that it will be foolish to apply the 3km rule across the board as many children living within that distance, and who will now be required to walk to school, will be have no option but to walk across busy carriageways and along dangerous roads that don’t have adequate footpaths putting their lives at danger on a daily basis.

T
orrevieja’s Planning Department have announced the seizure of 534,133 euros worth of bonds that were placed by constructors and promoters that have not carried out agreed repairs to roads, pavements and public areas, as required in the initial granting of their
building licenses. The amount corresponds to 60 permits, in some cases the contracts dating back to 2007, during the real estate boom. The amount of monies recovered from individual contractors ranges from between 600 euros and 97,000 euros. Councillor for Town Planning, Fanny Serrano, said that in each case a detailed assessment has been made itemising the cost of the agreed works still needing to be carried out such as, streetlights, manhole and drain covers, pavements, access roads etc. She said that many of the companies are no longer trading, having entered into bankruptcy during the housing crisis. The councillor said that the works and services will be carried out through the Department of Works and Services, although it might be necessary to outsource some of the specialist tasks, depending on the scope of the work to be done.
Hurtado reduces IBI Property Tax The city’s Councillor of Finance, José Hurtado (Los Verdes), has announced that approximately 40% of Torrevieja’s taxpayers have seen their IBI Property tax, Impuesto sobre Bienes Inmuebles,
reduced from 1 January, 2016 by 0 , 5% to 0.445%. He said that the reduction applies to over 64,000 of the 165,000 properties that currently exist in Torrevieja. More specifically it relates to those proper-
ties that were affected by the increase applied by the Popular Party Decree 20/2011 with a rateable value exceeding the city average of 46,366.07 euros in 2015. The remaining 60% of properties were not affected by the rise so they will see no reduction. IBI is the "Impuesto sobre Bienes Inmuebles", which could be translated as "property tax". This is a municipally levied tax and varies widely from one municipality to another and from one type of property to another. The amount you pay is usually based on the value of the property.

Living in Spain and the Canary Islands – The Paper Chase
T
he requirements for residency in Spain is a subject that I am often asked about and, perhaps unsurprisingly, the number of requests has risen substantially during the last few weeks following Brexit. Although this is a subject that I have written about on a number of occasions, I felt it was time for a refresh, since the rules and requirements rapidly change. Even so, intending expats should always check current information before committing themselves on the strength of this article. Also, please bear in mind that Spain is composed of autonomous regions, including the Canary Islands, and so procedures may vary according to where you are applying. Requirements for Residency If you plan to live for more than 3 months in Spain, you must register with your local police station or foreigners’ office (oficina de extranjeros). The application for residency will need to be completed in Spanish; however, you will find a copy of this document in English on my website, which you may find helpful. You will receive a residence certificate that states your NIE number (numero de identificacion extranjeros), which is a very important number that you will often need, as well as your name, address, nationality and date of registration. The original residence certificate has to last a long time, so you may wish to carefully protect it in a plastic cover. A notario office or friendly police station can authenticate your photocopies with a legal
stamp, for a fee, that many places accept instead of your actual residence certificate. However, for legal and town hall business, the original document is nearly always required. You also need to show evidence that you can support yourself financially, as you will not be eligible to claim state benefits until you have worked in Spain with a contract for several years. You will be asked to show that you have private health care insurance or that you have paid to join the Spanish National Health service if you are under the age of state retirement. Residents over the age of state retirement currently have full access to National Health services in Spain, although this may change if/when the UK leaves the EU. You will always need to show your passport when visiting police stations, foreigners’ offices, tax offices and town halls, as well as your residence certificate. You will also be often asked for photocopies of your passport, and it is useful to have a supply of these. A notario office and police station can authorise your photocopies with a legal stamp that many places accept instead of your actual passport, but for legal and town hall business, the original will nearly always be required. If you have a contract of employment with a Spanish company, you need to provide these details. If you are self employed, you need to register at the local Social Security Office. If you are not employed, then you need to prove you have other income or assets that you will use to live on, to avoid becoming a burden on the Spanish state; some regions may request that a specific amount of cash is readily available in your Spanish bank account. Your Spanish bank will provide information about your account and

By Bar rie Mahoney the money that you have deposited with them if you collect a form 790 from a local police station for a small charge. As mentioned earlier, residency requirements can vary between the different regions of Spain, and you may often be asked to provide a padron certificate that you can collect from the local town hall. This padron (similar to the electoral roll) is important for the local town hall as it gives them information about how many people are living in the municipality, which can increase their funding. It is in your interests, as well as that of your municipality that you register at the town hall; registration will also give you the right to vote in municipal and European elections (whilst the UK is a member of the EU), but not national or regional elections. Documents that are needed can be different across regions of Spain, so check with the police station or local town hall. A certificate of residency is a very important document, and is needed for many day-to-day activities. Just one piece of further advice; if you do not speak reasonably fluent Spanish, you should use a gestor who speaks English to complete and register these forms for you. It can also save you many hours of waiting at the police station. If you do decide to do it yourself, prepare for a long day, take drinks, sandwiches and a comfortable picnic chair, as this is one piece of Spanish bureaucracy that I would try to avoid at all costs! Cathedral tower reopens to public

Casino hosts the Film Festival 'Sol 2'
The main hall of the Torrevieja Casino hosted the second edition of the Russian Film Festival 'Sol' on Tuesday afternoon. It was attended by organizers, personalities for the Russian cinema as well as many members of the Torrevieja public who were all extremely keen to be involved with such a glamorous event. In proper cinematic tradition a red carpet stretched into the Casino providing a gateway for those who were attending the event, including Yana Anosova and Anna Semenova, actors of international fame together with the Russian-born Maria Shukshina, Alexander Mikhaylov, Ekaterina Klimova, Yana Anosova, Evelina Bledans and Gela Meskhi. The festival was also attended by the Vice President of the Provincial Government, Eduardo
Dolon. Who was attending with councillors of the government team, Victor Ferrández and Carmen Morate and PP councillor, Agustina Esteve. Following welcoming speeches from the director of the Festival, politicians, producers, actors and the president of the "World Globus" Association and the organizer of the event, Tattiana Semenova, there were performances by dancers, choreographed by Alexey Vayner and Erika Laub. The Valencian Champions of Latin dance then undertook a demonstration of their skills before singers Minskaya Anastasia and Yana Anosova took to the floor as they provide an act full of Hollywood glamour. Following a break for refreshments the guests then sat down for the screening of the film that opened the festival ' Status.Svoboden ('Estatus.Libre').

Beach lovers rewarded for ‘clean up’ with free ice cream
Once again, with the collaboration of the Orihuela Costa town hall, Chiringuitos Del Sol carried out a social responsibility initiative during 18-28 August where they encouraged users to help with the cleaning on local beaches. Using the slogan “Beach Lovers” the company sought to raise awareness among beach users of the importance of protecting the ecosystem to keep the beaches in perfect condition. Collection points were set up on a number of different beaches where participants were able to take a glass full of cigarette butts and receive in return a free drink or free ice cream for helping clean the beaches. Thanks to the active collaboration of the users of the beaches at Cala Capitan, Cala Bosque, Cala Estaca, La Caleta and La Glea, over 800 plastic containers full of cigarette ends were collected. The campaign is accompanied by messages of environmental awareness to show that the beaches
are one of the most vulnerable areas to climate change and that actions like burying a cigarette end in the sand, sea, or carelessly disposing of plastic containers or any residue, can cause irreparable damage with a single filter cigarette being enough to contaminate three litres of seawater since they are designed to absorb tar and chemicals such as lead and arsenic. When they come into contact with seawater these toxic substances are dissolved in the water, a risk, not only for the entire marine ecosystem but also for all bathers. The organizers, are very pleased by the success of this campaign and they want to encourage users to continue to help maintain the quality of the beaches along the entire coast of Orihuela. The organisers say that the clean up at the end of every holiday season ensures that the beaches are left by holidaymakers in a clean state and ready for their return and further enjoyment next year.

GOLF EQUIPMENT - GOLF BALLS Do you use a type of golf ball because you found it, were given it as a present or because it is the latest being used by the golf pro’s? To understand the importance of selecting a golf ball to suit your ‘game’ you need to know a little of golf ball aerodynamics and ball flight. Put simply every golf ball is hit with back spin and when any rotating spherical object comes into contact with a horizontal surface in a different plane, the object will reverse it’s rotation and that is why a golf ball back-spins on the second bounce. In addition under laboratory conditions using a robotic arm on a perfectly flat surface putts of 6ft were missed on a regular basis as a result of the reaction between the dimples on the ball and the putter face Still with me, I bet that you will not think about a golf ball in the same way again? Now I know that a golfer receives a small confidence boost on the first tee from his Titleist Pro V1 golf ball costing 5 Euro’s but this soon disappears as the ball curves left or right either out of bounds or into the nearest lake. Remember that these balls are designed to spin at a higher rate BUT this means laterally as well as backspin and therefore poorer shots with a hook or slice are accentuated. In addition here in the Vega Bega the courses are generally overwatered with resulting soft greens and landing areas so the new balls cannot spin as designed because the surfaces are not firm enough to react against. How can this help my thinking process I hear you ask? Do not use a ball because of it’s name but choose one that suits your game and a harder ball with a longer flight time is better suited to the conditions here on the Costa’s. If you consistently use the same golf ball and you understand the flight characteristics relative to your ‘game’ you will find club selection easier and eliminate doubt about how the ball will fly from rough or distances to carry bunkers and water hazards therefore allowing you to play the shot in a more positive manner. Remember that confidence is POWER and clear thinking is POSITIVE.

WELL DONE JUSTIN, a golfing gold! No medals for the outfits though, poor old Team GB looked as though they were gong to paint and decorate the stadium! BUBBA WATSON was thrilled by his Olympics experience. “We got tickets to see the fencing, we didn’t know what it was but we went anyway, it was terrific!” he told interviewers, before heading off to try and buy a drink at the parallel bars. “NOT AGAIN!” presenters groaned, as the PGA Tour Championship course was flooded and thunder and lightning caused a mass exit. Play was suspended at Baltusrol on the Saturday, forcing many, including winner Jimmy Walker, to play a marathon 36 holes on the Sunday. Weatherwise it’s been a bad year for American pro golf, for spectators as well as players. Unfortunately, there’s nowhere to hide on the course if a storm blows up. In the US Open at Hazeltine on June 13th 1991 the horns sounded for players to leave the course, but for 40,000 spectators there was nowhere to go. Six of them were struck by lightning as they sheltered under a tree, and 27 yr. old William Fadell died later in hospital. Lee Trevino, who was playing that day, had a poor round after play was resumed, but commented: “How can you get frustrated by shooting 77 when someone died?” It was Trevino’s second narrow escape on a golf course. In the 1975 Western Open at Butler National, lightning hit a lake and travelled through damp ground hitting both him and his partner Jerry Heard. The bolt surged through Trevino’s bag, went up his arm and out through his back. Other players were knocked to the ground, and Tony Jacklin’s club was torn out of his hand and landed 30ft away. Retief Goosen was aged 15 when lightning struck him on a golf course. His clothes were burnt off and his watch melted to his wrist, and he was left with an irregular heart beat and partial deafness. He

Furyk still only managed 5th place behind Scotland’s Russell Knox, who had a 2-under final round of 68. ERNIE ELS lit up the third round of the Travelers with a hole in one at the 176 yd 16th. Giving high-fives to playing-partners Keegan Bradley and Louis Oosthuizen, the Big Easy told the caddies: “I'll keep the bar tab open for six hours, after that you're on your own.” After that, they were probably under the table. San Luis Bowls Club Re Opens The installation of the new base, underlay and carpet was completed on Saturday 20th August and Vic Slater the owner of San Luis bowls club organised a Champagne reception on the Sunday for the members before the first club roll up on the new surface. Jackie Breslin of Greengauge Surfaces Spain, thanked Vic for entrusting the contract to Greengauge asaying that he was confident that when the new carpet had been “played in” that

they will have provided one of the truest surfaces in the country. Jackie had been on site every day, all day, overseeing the new concrete base carried out by Juan and his team and then during the installation of the underlay and carpet. “ It has been very rewarding being here during the installation, learning how a surface is laser levelled and I have to say that both teams worked brilliantly in extremely hot conditions.

CARP-R-US CLUB NEWS This week, the 1st September, the Club fished a one off match for the Summer Cup. This was held on the Eden Canal in Guardamar, which will soon be totally overgrown with bamboo. The water has a khaki colour to it and there is a very slow flow. There was no evidence of crabs this week. The winner of the cup was Roy Dainty with a weight of 3.80kg. Second was John Brightling and in third place was Andy Foden. Next weeks match is round one of the Autumn Series and will be fished on September 8th on the Embalse de Pedrera. Pegs at 8.00 and fishing from 9.00 till 2.00. The water situation is getting progressively worse with Pedrera down from 35.37% last week to 34.56% this week.
Beniarres, one of the best venues in the Alicante province is down to 5.51%. The next Quiz night is on Tuesday 13th September commencing at 7.30pm. Cost of entry is 1€ and teams of up to 6 can take part. The next Sunday meeting is on September 18th, with the Committee meeting at 10.30 and the General Meeting at 11.00. Sometimes, teams lose players because players move back to the UK, but, more often than not, extra ladies are required to cover for holidays and sickness. So, if you ever thought of joining a Ladies Club, or playing Darts, now is the time to do it. elson Mandela Stadium heralded a new era for CD Torrevieja, but Sunday also signalled a very sad day for them. Vicente Garcia Stadium had been the home of Torrevejense football for many years, having witnessed many magical moments in both Preferente, 3, and 2b divisions. It was founded on 18 November 1971, and is one of a few natural grass surfaces that exist in the Valencia region. But following closure of changing rooms and the main grandstand for safety reasons, plus the cost of regular maintenance of the pitch, the club decided enough was enough, reluctantly making the decision to permanently relocate to nearby Nelson Mandela. Following an opening home victory against Almoradi, another local team were to make the short journey across the Veja Baja region. Orihuela have started the season with 2 consecutive draws, and arrived knowing that the last time these 2 sides met, bragging rights most certainly
went their way. Torry meanwhile, fought back well from an early 3 goal salvo at Villarreal last week, when goals from Zapata then Salamanca reduced the deficit. Unfortunately, the impressive striker Zapata has elected to ply his trade elsewhere at div 2b side Palencia, but hopefully manager Gabi Correa will soon be able to fill that gap. There were two changes to the Torry lineup from last week with Abraham and Adrian coming in for Melli who was relegated to the bench, and Zapata who has moved on to pastures new. Also making the bench was former Torry youth, but more recently of At. Madrid, Damian, who was back with the club after his exploits in the capital. The game itself saw Torry making all the running with the visitors kept to long range efforts, but two good opportunities both falling to Matheus. He really should have done better when put through on the 15 minute mark by Lewis but his delayed shot allowed the Orihuela defence to clear the danger. Perona was first in the book following a nasty challenge on Carrasco but the Torry veteran following him into the referee’s book just 5 minutes later when he went in search of retribution. In between time a mix up in the Torrevejense defence allowed Ayo to put the visitors in front with a well struck shot from the edge of the box. There was an effort by Carrasco just prior to the interval but it was a point blank save from Marcano on Antonio that kept the home side in the

game as they left the field for the half time interval. However it took less than 3 minutes of the 2nd period for Antonio to put matters right when the Orihuela forward got the goal that he had earlier been denied to all but put the game to bed. And what an embarrassingly simple goal it was as the ball just about trickled over the line with the wrongfooted Marcano diving away from the ball. The home side huffed and puffed but they just couldn’t get back into the game. Indeed it was largely Orihuela who were in the ascendency with the home side clearly not enjoying the move to
their new home. With the Torry fans streaming out of the gates they were largely spared the disappointment of seeing their side fall a further goal behind when substitute Siro ran at the defence before squeezing home from a tight angle on 94 minutes. Next week, with the pressure for points beginning to mount, and the manager and fans wondering from where they are likely to come, the trip north to Xàtiva where Torry take on high riding CD Olímpic
The Fred Griggs Memorial Trophy CD Montesinos hosted Racing San Miguel at The Municipal Stadium, Los Montesinos, on Saturday where they played for The Fred Griggs Memorial Trophy losing by 1-2. Former CD Montesinos President Fred died in Torrevieja, aged 83, following a heart attack last year, after being at the forefront of the 'Full Monte' Supporters Club. Also a former President of Middlesex Football Association, Fred was a stalwart at the Alicante based club, and moved to CD Montesinos after being the Chairman of Torrevieja FC supporters club Federation, The Torry Army. The San Miguel loss was their first of the season having previously gone undefeated in pre-season under new coach Camacho, having drawn 1-1 against San Isidro after defeating Torrevieja CF 2-
