As Orihuela Costa residents and holidaymakers still await construction of the footpath promised by local politicians along Calle Cabo Creus from La Regia toward Lomas de Cabo Roig and the Fuente Commercial Centre, many years after its development was first assured, complaints from the townsfolk of Torrevieja are gathering pace as they too voice their concerns, this time about the lack of suitable pavements and cycle tracks for those people wishing to walk or to cycle to or from the Torrevieja Hospital. In terms of accidents waiting to happen both areas and their adjacent pathways are com-

pletely unsafe, simply inviting disaster with the regular streams of heavy traffic that put the lives at risk of the many pedestrians, both adults and children, that regularly use the narrow walkways along the edge of the roads. In Torrevieja, despite the hospitalâ€™s relative proximity to the city, there are no pavements or cycle paths linking the town of Torrevieja with its Hospital and the adjacent village of Los Balcones, The CV-05 from Av Desiderio Rodriguez to the hospital creates particular dangers, not even having the capacity for parking a broken down car, much less the capacity for a person to walk to the hospital with a modicum of safety. Circumventing the roundabout at the desalination plant, which is also crammed with traffic every day, creates dangers of its own. Continued on Page 2

Torrevieja residents are also quick to point out another which is accessibility to the cemetery. Many of the thousands of people who visit the cemetery don’t have cars and are forced to do so on foot. Once again there is no pavement with a particularly dangerous underground section that has not seen any safety improvements for pedestrians in decades. Quite how there aren’t more deaths amongst the many pedestrians that regularly use these roadways, either en route to and from the beach, and the bars and restaurants or the hospital, particularly at night, I am absolutely amazed. by the current administrations, these two stretches of roadway are in critical need of pedestrian footpaths and lighting. Whilst the current mayor of Torrevieja has said that he is aware of the situation surrounding the hospital and he has requested assistance from the Regional Council to carry out the work on many occasions, the Orihuela Ciudadanos party has ask at for the bridge over the AP-7 motorway in Orihuela Costa to be widened into a dual carriageway, as was originally planned in the project to develop the sector in Lomas de Cabo Roig. They believe the developer of this area should provide this

infrastructure or if not the Town Hall should do it and charge it to the bank guarantee provided by the company. When the developer carried out all the work in the area it did everything except widen the bridge across Calle Cabo Creus connecting urbanisations Dehesa de Campoamor and La Regia with Lomas de Cabo Roig. The bridge currently has only one lane in each direction and no pavements for pedestrians, “who are forced to walk along a hard shoulder barely 40 centimetres wide and so putting themselves in danger”, explained the spokesman, Juan Ignacio López Bas.

Torrevieja Guardia gets hot and bothered

ith the temperature in the mid 30’s, as you sit under the aircon enjoying its welcome flurry of cool draughts, spare a thought for the members of the Guardia Civil, and their guests, all accommodated in the headquarters of the local force based in Torrevieja, as they endure up to 22 power cuts to their electricity supply every single day. And now it seems hardly surprising that they have had enough. According AUGC, the body’s national union, this situation has been repeated every day since the summer began in earnest in July, with the consequent discomfort that this causes to agents, who suffer from the constant interruptions to their work, and the people who go to the facility to lodge their complaints. The interruption of the power supply means that officers and staff who are working with computers see them regularly crash needing regular re-booting, lengthening the time to process of collection of each complaint, causing major delays for the complainants and of course doing untold damage to the equipment itself with the constant systems failures. Furthermore, the air conditioning units also power off, so the temperatures soar in the offices and adjacent barracks. Quite a number of complainants have protested about the situation, some seeking out the superior officers on duty but the response is always a shrug of the shoulders with them saying there is little that can be done. The officers themselves are also making regular complaints. According to the union, the only measures that they seem able to take involve running around the building unplugging vending machines, coffee, water and soft drinks machines that are in use. But even then there is little improvement as the outages continue on a regular basis with the consequent discomfort of those affected.

Orihuela Council grant ensures MUDIC reprieve

n July we reported that staff at MUDIC, the Didactic and Interactive Science Museum of Vega Baja del Segura, located in Orihuela, were about to go on holiday uncertain as to whether they would still have a job on their return in September. They had been promised a City Council subsidy of 50,000 euros by Orihuela mayor Emilio Bascuñana. Well now it would appear that the promised grant, and more, has been forthcoming following the approval of a 60,000 euro grant by the Board of the Orihuela Ayuntamiento last week. Thus the museum no longer has the previous insecurity hanging over it and can now open its doors in September to serve the thousands of local schoolchildren that pass through its classrooms every year. Orihuela city spokesman, Francisco Saez, explained that in the coming days MUDIC will receive 80% of the grant amounting to 48,000 euros with the remaining 20% to be paid later in the year, as is the case with all municipal subsidies. He said that it is critical that the first payment is made very quickly as the museum needs the funds to keep its cashflow alive.

Saez said that it is "an important step" to resolving the problems that we have with the science museum being the only museum of it’s kind in the province. MUDIC is an Interactive Science Museum, a permanent structure of science belonging to the municipality of Orihuela. It is located in the Higher Polytechnic School of Orihuela (Desamparados Campus of the Miguel Hernández University (UMH)) and is managed by the MUDIC-VBS-CV Foundation. The foundation is composed of the Miguel Hernández University, the Town Hall of Orihuela and the Science Teachers Association ‘Hypatia de Alejandria’. It covers instruction in six subjects to approximately 10,000 students every year, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geology and Technology, with a coordinator in charge of each area. Earlier in the year administrators at the museum had to secure a bank loan of 20,000 euros to meet the payments of wages and workers' social contributions which as a municipal institution they should quite clearly not be required to do!

Minister hopes to see new TV Studio established at ‘City of Light’

The N332 road safety project reached an agreement with the Hollywood Motor Show to help the children from Elche Children´s Home have a fun day out. The stunt drivers didn´t hesitate to help us when we explained where the tickets would go. The three stars of the show, stunt drivers David, Patrick and Christopher, donated the tickets so that the children could come to see them perform, where they will be able to experience this amazing event first hand. Francisco Morales from N332 said, “We must think of the children during this holiday time when those with families are enjoying their time together, many of those without a family don´t have the same opportunities and don´t even get to leave their home”. As well as sharing news and information to encourage safer driving and hopefully save lives, N332 will keep working to help local charities, and with the recent launch of the new eMagazine will be donating some of the benefits earned to these local charities.

the total number of passengers now stands at 11,539,688. So far during this calendar year of 2016 the figure is now close to seven million.

The information has been provided as part of the monthly presentation of passenger figures, although with this latest increase there is a lot to be celebrated at the Costa Blanca travel hub, which saw 1,463,623 passengers in a month.

Perhaps no big surprise is the fact that the Brits are the biggest users of the airport, with the majority of flights from Alicante-Elche serving the U.K. Internationally, Norway now stands in second place, followed by Germany, then Holland, Sweden and Belgium.

Aside from July, this weekend was also particularly busy with 1,230 scheduled flights carrying 206,148 passengers for the holiday weekend, showing that the growth is continuing throughout the summer.

It´s not only passengers that have increased, freight traffic has also seen an increase at Alicante-Elche, up 4% on the same period of last year, whereas overall there has been an annual increase of over 92% in freight carried.

Reading your article, Re Improvements to the Sewage System in Orihuela City, I felt I had to respond. We in Orihuela Costa, residents and Holiday makers, are forced to BREATH in RAW SEWAGE daily, I refer to what I call the La Zenia Pong. This hasn't happened overnight, but has been ongoing for several years. I feel this is due to the inadequate infrastructure of the very old sewage pipping, that is being grossly overloaded, especially with the ongoing building work, adding more and more dwellings to this inadequate system. How dare Orihuela City keep passing building application to the extent they have, when thousands of dwellings haven't even been sold? Without consultation with parties from Orihuela Costa. The infrastructure for the whole area is suffering, with the roads having potholes that do not get repaired, filthy rubbish areas, neglagable street cleaning, without a decent but service, and no rail link,and the N332 in constant trouble through various reasons, and No Ambulance service after 8 P.M. Just when there are hundreds of people flocking into the La Zenia Bvd, what would happen if there was a serious problem there? Isn't it time the the residents of Orihuela Costa, said NO MORE Shouldn't we be governed equally to the City of Orihuela, or are we just a cash cow for them. Isn't it time to say to Orihuela City lets be self governing and have our own independence as Pilar did some years ago. Or even be governed by San Miguel, or Torrevieja. I am sure they would treat us better! All this seems perfectly feasible.

DRAMATIC RESCUES IN ORIHUELA

Officers from Orihuela Local Police acted quickly this week and managed to prevent a potentially fatal situation after a couple attempted to rescue their dog who had fallen into a water channel. The incident happened last Sunday at around 21:30 in the Arneva area of the municipality when the dog accidentally fell into a ditch filled with water. Although the depth of the water was around 1.5 metres, the unseen currents made it potentially deadly. Trying to hold onto the dog, it was becoming increasing difficult for one of the owners who was dragged into the water. The partner immediately alerted the 112 emergency centre who despatched the police, ambulance and fire service. First on the scene, the police officers formed a human chain, joined y the fire fighters, and managed to rescue both the female owner and the dog successfully, the prompt action saving the lives of all.

New children’s park in Algorfa

The first deputy mayor, Fabian Rico, said that the previous administration had intended to build a skate park on the site but the current government team had decided to substitute the project with a playground which was more in line with the wishes of the local residents" he added “This is a modern and integrated park in a place where many children are concentrated on a daily basis." The theme of the park is one of animals and jungle, highlighted with vibrant colours like yellow, red and green. The opening was a great success, with face painting, music and games for all those in attendance.

Scrubland Fire in Los Dolses

Fire crews from both Torrevieja and Almoradi spent more than two hours extinguishing a blaze on the Orihuela Costa last Tuesday in the area of the Barranco de Monte Zenia urbanization near Villamartin. The fire, which took hold at about 1330 hours was also attended by a helicopter from the Provincial Fire Consortium which helped to coordinate the extinction efforts of the crews. The fire, spread across a large arid and dry scrub area, and was controlled before it could pose a threat to the nearby developments. There were no injuries or damage to any of the neighbouring properties

Sleep deprivation in the summer T

he heat and the longer hours of sunshine are the main causes for sleep deprivation. For that reason many people turn to sleeping with air conditioning, open windows or use fans that also provide good benefits for a healthy sleep, as say the experts at the Sleep Unit of Hospital Quirónsalud Murcia, Torrevieja and Valencia. According to Dr. Gonzalo Pin, coordinator of the Sleep Unit for Hospital Quirónsalud Valencia, in summer there are four circumstances that could affect our sleep, in the case of high summer temperatures, "if the temperature is greater than 22 degrees the onset of sleep is difficult therefore more movements and night time awakenings. Also the increased noise levels from outside when we open windows, more people on the street, the noise from the air conditioning machine etc. Our hearing is in "waking activity" hindering the depth and continuity of our sleep." The second cause that affects our sleep in the summer is the duration of light-dark natural cycle: as the daylight hours increase, night time falls later and this affects our internal biological clock "its set time" depending on the light we receive spontaneously depends on our bedtime. Our biological night in summer is somewhat shorter than in winter. Another reason is the change in our daily habits, says Dr. Pin, "we get up later, eat and drink differently, we extend our leisure time and we lose the routine from the beginning to the end of our sleep patterns sleeping more irregular hours. Sleep is a habit that requires external elements to perform properly and consistency between these elements is critical. " The logical answer to all of this is practicing a healthy summertime habit of having an afternoon nap. Today we know that siestas (naps) improve our intellectual activity and our mood. But you must have an adequate duration of about half an hour and we should avoid naps very late in the day because they contribute to further delay of sleeping at night. If these four conditions we also add a long journey in which we cross several time zones (especially eastbound) the appearance of Jet-Lag alter our regular sleep pattern for at least 4-7 days depending on our age, concludes the doctor. Tips for better sleep in summer The experts recommend that we follow these tips to achieve better sleep during this time of year, like ventilating the room hours before bedtime, eating a balanced diet and staying hydrated. According to Dr. Esteban Vicente, a specialist in neurophysiology of the Sleep Unit of Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja, "to have restful sleep during the summer period it is very useful to have clear strategies to maintain proper sleep hygiene." Some of the practical aspects to improve sleep in summer are: We should try to normalize the usual sleeping: with the same sleep schedule, we should not sleep more than a 20 minute nap otherwise this alters our night's sleep and do not lay in more than an hour after a sleepless night. Breathe properly: With a simple technique you can get it, you must be laid face up and in a comfortable position, close your eyes and relax your muscles, breathing slowly three times without forcing the breath and the end of the third breath hold without breathing in air. It is important that the breathing is not forced, repeat the cycle six to eight times. Adequate food: It is very important to eat a balanced diet and keep well hydrated. Do not smoke close to bed time and drink moderate consumption of coffee, tea, chocolate, soft drinks from noon onwards. Go to bed half an hour after eating normally and at least 2 hours if you have eaten a large meal. Finally, you should dine lightly

ly 25 years of protests from locals and environmentalists, permission has finally been granted and the traditional pebbly beach has now been transformed into a gleaming mass of white sand, which has been paid for by the timeshare company. The only problem with trying to create a white sandy beach close to this timeshare mecca is that there is no gleaming white sand available locally. Therefore, 70,000 tonnes of Saharan sand were purchased and imported from the Western Sahara. Sadly, it now appears that the sand was all but ‘stolen’ from the displaced people of the Western Sahara; the Sahawari people claim that they were not consulted, and that their natural resources were taken from them without compensation or their permission. Recently, Saharawi representatives arrived in the Canary Islands to complain that the act of removing the sand was both illegal and criminal, since it belonged to the Saharawi people who were removed from the area by the Moroccan army after Spain abandoned its former colony some 40 years ago.

By Bar rie Mahoney Environmentalists have consistently warned of the dangers of transporting sand from other regions, since it brings with it the risk of importing non-indigenous species of life into the area, with unknown and unforeseen consequences. We also know from similar experiments on the island that moving sand in this way has caused tortoises, turtles, lizards and many other creatures to be destroyed in the process of sucking up sand for transportation. Has anyone also considered the implications of shifting large quantities of ‘alien’ sand upon other environmentally sensitive areas along the coastline? Meanwhile, the timeshare company has plans to develop the site even further by adding a marina and several hotels offering five-star quality with a combined capacity of around 7500 beds. These plans are accompanied by the usual fine words of promise to create more jobs and prosperity for local people, which in reality it rarely does in the long term, since profits are quickly sucked out of the islands and into the coffers of large international conglomerates. It is a project that is unashamedly designed to transform a natural area into a tourist mecca, which indeed it will. In these times when the price of everything is fully costed, but true value is ignored, there seems to have been little consideration of the environmental costs and impact that such a development will cause. The planners and suits have spoken, so I guess that we will just have to get used to the wilful destruction of yet another part of our beautiful island, even though a white sandy beach does look rather pretty. I’m just off to the black sand on our small village beach for a swim. It may be black, but at least I know that it is environmentally friendly. Shifting Sand ’m all for a beautiful white, sandy beach; after all, it is the stuff of postcards, and the kind of image that one dreams about during those cold, wet and rainy days in the UK. I now live in a Gran Canarian village that can only offer black sand on its small, secluded beach. We live on a small volcanic island and the geology of the area dictates the colour of the sand. In contrast, the nearby Maspalomas Dunes, which offers a wonderful, ever changing landscape of shifting near-white sand, is again due to the geological make up of that part of the island. Sadly, not all beaches come supplied with white sand, and that is just the way it is. We have recently returned from a visit to one of our favourite islands, Fuerteventura. Anyone who has visited this unique island will have noticed the many kilometres of brilliant white sand, set against a stunning blue sea and sky on the outskirts of the bustling tourist resort of Correlejo. This beautiful area is a protected natural park, and is a delight to the eye, as well as being a photographer’s paradise. In addition to admiring the white sand, tourists can also enjoy kite and wind surfing and all manner of seaborne activities. If all else fails, nothing beats an afternoon of relaxation well away from the crowds on a near deserted, beautiful beach. The temptation to provide a white sandy beach to attract tourists is the reason why one of the timeshare companies in Gran Canaria has decided to transform what some may see as a rather dull, pebbly traditional Canarian cove into one of white sand, no doubt to match the blue sea and sky that many holidaymakers dream about. Further delays for new Rojales school

After more than a decade of promises, students hoping to attend the newly built school in Rojales will be disappointed next month, as a further delay to the work means that the education department has been forced to revert to portacabins for the new school year. There was a six-week delay in the start of the work which was hoped to be completed after the summer holidays, and so for the first few months at least, studies will be done in the prefabricated temporary building. The work will continue during this period with

some of the new facilities becoming available for use. Work started by dismantling the football pitch, dining room, library and other facilities, all of which would then be replaced, the last piece of the remodelling jigsaw being the old building itself. It is hoped that most of the demolition work will be completed by Christmas and despite the delay the town hall and parents are still seeing it as a positive development as after a ten-years of delays another couple of months seems somewhat insignificant.

Archangel Volunteers helping the needy Almost 850 kgs of food was collected last week in the Playa Flamenca Branch of SUPERCOR last week by the Community Group San Miguel Archangel. The collection took place on the 4th and 5th of August and was manned by 14 members of the charity who all gave up holidays to help out. A spokesperson from the group said that SUPERCOR staff had been amazing, donation quite a lot of the food themselves.

The food collected will be used to cover the basic needs of the families hardest hit by the crisis in the municipality.

Paddle Surf racing at Campoamor

The Orihuela Costa will be playing host to its first Paddle Surf competition this weekend, as Playa de Campoamor is transformed into a sporting venue for the event on Sunday, August 21. A buoyed circuit will be created where the paddlers have to navigate their route through a network of between 400 metres and up to 15,000 metres, depending on the class and category. Up to a hundred people are expected to take part in the event, the latest sporting contest to be hosted on the Orihuela Costa.

Swimmers rescued in separate incidents Two swimmers with symptoms of immersion syndrome were rescued in two separate incidents this weekend, one off the cost of San Pedro del Pinatar, the other off Cartegena. In Lo Pagán, San Pedro, a man in his 70´s has swallowed water in the Mar Menor and was giving medical attention at the beach before being transferred to hospital. An hour earlier, at Cala Cortina in Cartagena, a man in his 20´s was suffering breathing difficulties whilst swimming and was pulled from the sea, unconscious, before being given lifesaving treatment and then also being transferred to hospital. The beaches have been at their busiest this weekend on account of the holiday.

Compromís calls for improved Emergency Services on the Coast Once again Orihuela politicians are demanding a better deal for the coast as the spokesman for Compromís, Cayetano Portugués, calls for better and improved emergency services, not only medical but police, security and especially fire.. He specifically made the point that there is a lot of dry scrubland and tinder across the coastal area, presenting a very real danger of the outbreak of fires, something that was borne out by the episode we saw in Los Dolses last Tuesday. Fortunately that particular occurrence didn’t threaten the neighbouring urbanisation but a change in the direction of the wind would have presented a completely different scenario. The spokesman regretted "the dereliction of duties" from members of Bascuñana’s PP government team in Orihuela because "while others are working hard to improve the region, too many PP councillors are just sitting on their hands making no progress at all.” Cayetano Portugués was making his appeal direct to la Diputación de Alicante and the Orihuela consistory. Perhaps when and if Bascuñana ever considers the Compromís request he might also deliberate on the state of Orihuela’s roads, green areas, parks and an awful lot more which have seen absolutely no

improvement during his 18 months in office. I seem to recall attending the mayor’s very first press conference following the formation of the new Orihuela government in which Bascuñana said that during the next four years he would work ‘with honesty and integrity’ to improve the situation of all of the residents of Orihuela and the coast. Well 18 months on Mr Mayor, if you are to keep your promises to the people living on the Orihuela Costa I would suggest that you have got quite a lot of progress still to make.

MID-SUMMER AMERICAN TENNIS TOURNAMENT The mixed doubles tournament took place in the beautiful surrounds of the Campoamor golf club. As expected the weather was pretty hot, but a breeze kept conditions bearable. 7TH SUMMER CUP 2016 - Secretary/Captain Challenge FONT DEL LLOP GOLF RESORT - 5th Aug This is the oldest golf tournament at Font del Llop Golf Resort, not my words but those of the Alberto Iglesias - General Director, and it is one that attracts Golf Societies from the Costa Blanca and Costa Calida. This year there were 40 Societies competing for the Summer Cup Trophy and a table full of prizes for the event which is organised by The Vega Baja Premier Golf League. Despite the recent prolonged heat wave there was a wind that tested the players, but no searing sun for the Costa’s hardy golfers. This was a ‘shot gun’ start which ensures all the players get in around the same time for the presentation meal. But to ensure they did not suffer too much on the course a “picnic” with a bottle of water, was taken out to them. As always it was a close fought event and only 10 points covered the top six places. SAN MIGUEL GOLF SOCIETY AT RODA This week San Miguel Golf Society visited Roda with 18 members and 6 guests taking part in a Yellow ball stableford team event as well as the usual weekly stableford. All 5,820 metres of Roda golf course are wide open to the elements with not much in the way of contours or vegetation to offer any shelter or shade. It’s a course where taking a chance and going for the odd outrageous shot is part of the attraction, I’m sure when the renowned designer, Dave Thomas, saw his plans coming to fruition he must have thought, “If anyone can score well on the first four holes, it’ll be plain sailing for the rest of the round!! The course was in excellent condition with only 2 players breaking par Tony Smale with 37 and Brian Mulligan with a handicap cutting of 40 points. The par 3’s were won by Brian Mulligan (2), Darren Hancock (7), Jamie Rolinson (11) and Ian Parkinson (13).

In The individual stableford winners were 5th Steve Higgins (33), 4th John Osborne (35), Norman Mcbride (35), 2nd Tony Smale (37) and with the best score of the day Brian Mulligan with 40 points. Best guest was Peter Devlin with 33 points. And the Abacus going to a very popular winner Alan Macdonald. In the team event in second place were with 166 points were Steve Fleet, Tony Smale, Norman Mcbride and Nick Spicer. And not surprising with 2 players in the top 4 of the individual the winning team was John Osborne, Brian Staines, Brian Mulligan and Jamie Rollinson with 168 points. Well done to all concerned. We had a smaller field than usual for our trip to RODA mainly due to the very hot and humid weather conditions however a nice breeze on the day helped us keep our cool (well some of us). The course was again in excellent condition so thank you RODA, we all enjoyed our round. Our winner for the second time in three outings was John Hillier with last year's winner, Eileen Moriarty, beaten on the count back. Rory and Hazel and all the staff at Paddy's again deserve a big thank you, what a great pub and lovely people. No 2's to report so pot rolled over until next outing. 33 members and a handful of guests made their way to the course in anticipation of the storms that were forecast for today. As it happens the bad weather held off but the storm did arrive on the Par 3’s, never before, have we had so many birdies on the par 3’s. This resulted in the “2’s” pot of just €26 being shared out between 8 members. What was even more surprising was that the course was playing at its longest with most of the yellow tees being back on the whites. Our recent decision to divide the field into 3 categories certainly seems to be a winner with the members, we now present a total of 9 prizes + the N.T.P.’s + the “2’s” pot. Rocket’s Golf Society at Vistabella Golf – 9th August 2016 It was back to our “Home” on another extremely hot Summer’s day, temperatures hit a high of 36 degrees and plenty of water was the order of the day, a little tip drink at least a half litre of water before you go and play as it is difficult the rehydrate quickly when playing. Considering it is August and the high temperatures the turnout was very good, thankfully a breeze came up in the afternoon to ease the players game. Yet another well done to Vistabella green staff as the course and in particular the greens is in really good condition considering the heat wave over the past weeks and helped those who could cope with the heat. Las Ramblas Golf Society As if golf isn't difficult enough on Monday our competition was a Stableford singles in which we were only allowed to use 5 clubs and a putter. This proved too much for a lot of us but it did not affect our first and second players. Nick Campbell won with 35 pts. and Mike Mahony was runner up with 33 pts There was some excellent scoring in our Singles Stableford on Wednesday with 4 players attracting the attention of the Handicap Secretary by beating the par of 36 pts. Bottom of the table is now Noel Davis's team. The entries for the Valencian Championships have now gone in, the draw will take place on Wednesday at Morgans Bar. Carp - R - Us News On August 11th, our anglers fished the second round of the August mini series of 4 x 4 hour matches, on the Eden Canal stretch of the River Segura in Guardamar. It was another very warm day with quite a lot of cloud cover. The winner using pole, corn and bread was Steve Fell with 3.34kg. In second place was Roy Dainty with 2.44kg, third was Geoff Tempest with 2.10kg and fourth was Graham Leadley with 1.82kg.These 3 anglers all used feeder and corn. The next round will be held on the Sweetwater Canal ( Nancys.), on 18th August. This time pegs will be at 7.30am with fishing from 8.30 till 12.30. Round four the following week will be held at El Bosquet, on 25th August. Pegs at 8.00 and fishing 9.00 till 1.00. The next Quiz night is on Tuesday 30th August commencing at 7.30pm. Teams of up to 6 people can take part and cost of entry is 1€ per person. The next Club meeting is on Sunday 21st August with the Committee meeting at 10.30 followed by the General Meeting at 11.00am. Two wins against Preferente league sides, ensured that Gabi Correa leads his experimental new look Torry side into next weeks opening league match full of confidence. He has gradually rebuilt the team, not only giving trialists a chance, but having made shrewd signings of mainly experienced players in all departments. According to the club website, the squad now stands at 14, with probably another 6 or 7 still to come. Against Callosa, who incidentally fielded ex players Jorge and Kike, Torry scored the only goal on 66 mins when a Luis Carlos corner was headed on by Pastor to the far post for Matheus, who was lurking to stab the

ball home. Vicente and Costa were the only 2 players to complete a full 90 mins, although other players were given longer run outs than in the previous 3 friendlies. Although both Vicente and Matias were booked, the club left with silverware in the form of the San Roque trophy. Benferri took the lead on 15 mins through Guille, when his firm header gave Torry keeper Marcano no chance. Only 2 mins had elapsed before Carrasco levelled the scores, courtesy of an assist by Lewis. The winner arrived on 64 mins, when new signing Adrian notched up a cracker on his debut. Central midfielder Adrian last season played in Gibraltar for div 1 side Europa FC, and is joined at the club by Vazquez, who lists Linares, Alicante and Ceuta as his former clubs. Gabi Correa once again gave players more game time, as Vicente, Martin and Costa lasted the distance. A home match at the Vicente Garcia stadium awaits Torry this coming Sunday 21 Aug, ko 7pm, when near neighbours, newly promoted Almoradi are their opponents for this opening div 3 clash.

BRAZILIAN striker Vazquinho returned to his old stomping ground on Friday (Aug 12) when pulling on the shirt of CD Montesinos against Atletico Catral at The Municipal Stadium, Los Montesinos, under new coach Camacho. Vazquinho, a former player of the season and leading goalscorer at the Vega Baja based club, has returned to the Segunda Grupo Regional outfit after spending last season at Sporting Saladar, having been signed by Monte's ex-coach Juanpe. Camacho - the third manager in three years - replaced Roberto Cases who departed at the end of last season to take charge at UD Horadada. CD Montesinos will host Torrevieja CF on Wednesday August 17, kick off 9pm, and San Isidro on August 26, kick of 9pm, at The Municipal. On September 3 CDM will host Racing San Miguel, kick off 9pm, and Bigastro on September 10, kick off 9pm, ahead of the new 2016-17 season. "We are hoping that all goes well ahead of the new season under coach Camacho. We are all committed to the cause," CD Montesinos player Dani O'Rourke told me. Meanwhile UD Horadada new coach Roberto has signed former Cox striker Mario Martinez.
