It´s not long now until father and son team, Dave and Mitch Bull, will be off on their epic journey around the coast and borders of Spain on motorbikes, raising money and awareness for the AECC (Cancer research) and the Samaritans in Spain, of which Dave is the patron. Twenty-three days travelling will see them visit most of Spain´s biggest cities and along the way they´ll be meeting up with groups and local contacts who are going to help them along the way. The ´challenge´ for the two of them is to cover almost 400 kilometres each day without using motorways and sticking as close as possible
to the coast and the borders with France and Portugal. They´ll have just five euros each per day for food and drink because they both want to keep costs to a minimum. Each night they´ll be looking for a friendly campsite where they can pitch their tent for free and, fortunately, with both of them having a passion for cooking, the evening meal should at least be tasty, although a Camping Gaz stove restricts the variety on the plate somewhat! Following on from last year´s successful challenge to row two kayaks down the River Segura, from Murcia to the coast at Guardamar (52km), which raised over €3,000 for the charities, Dave and Mitch have raised the bar this year to try and cover the 7,500 kilometres in the time allocated and visit some of Spain´s best known places. Overwhelming vote in favour of continuous school day
O
ver 260 schools in the Alicante Province decided on Friday to implement the continuous day, more than thirty of which are located in the Vega Baja. Voting has been going on for the last 4 weeks, however the voting centres were set up at almost every school in the area on Friday, the final day of the poll, with parents given the opportunity to decide whether to continue with the system as at present or to introduce the new school day which will start at 9am with the option of running through to 5pm. The result was an overwhelming vote for change. In Torrevieja, all state schools voted in favour, with the exception of the Colegio Amanecer which did not vote. In Orihuela the following centres voted in favor: Andrés Manjón, Villar Palasí, Fernando de Loaces, Ismael García (La Murada), Nuestra Señora de Belén (La Aparecida) and the colegio de San Bartolomé. In Callosa de Segura there was a massive vote for change at all state schools and in Rojales the only school in the town, the Poet Miguel Hernández (formerly Prince of Spain) had 64% of parents voting in favor. The three public schools in Dolores, Virgen de los Dolores, San Francisco de Asís and Cardenal
Belluga, also voted in favour of the change. Parents of Catral’s colegio público Azorín recorded 1027 votes in favour with only 11 votes against. The decision to record a ’No’ vote on behalf of parents who failed to show still gave ‘change’ voters a 77.8% share. Supporters of this new educational model say that schools will be able to better organise their curriculum’s and teachers their training modules. It will also enable improved organisation of training for teachers, coordination of activities in schools and especially the reconciliation of work and family life, because with the new continuous day the parents have a much longer window during which time they can pick their children up from school, either 2pm, 3.30pm or 5pm. It is understood that most schools will introduce the new curriculum on 1 October which will see the new school day from 9am to 2pm followed by comido in the school cafeteria until 3.30pm after which there will be free extracurricular activities until 5pm. Regional Educational officials are confused however by the way the vote went across the entire Valencian Community with just 37 centres voting for change in Valencia Province and only 14 in Castellon, compared with 264 in the Province of Alicante.

Guardia officer risks life to rescue unconscious Brit
A
69 year old British woman was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the Hospital de Sant Joan d'Alacant after being rescued by the Civil Guard at her home in El Campello, where she fell and was unable to get up. She spent all 3 days on the floor during which time she remained without food or water. The rescue took place last Tuesday after a neighbour alerted the Civil Guard to the fact that the Briton, who lived alone, hadn’t been seen for three days which she felt was unusual. The Civil Guard couldn’t raise any response from inside the fifth floor apartment but eventually decided to seek permission to enter the house from the courts. Unable to gain access through the reinforced front door a Guardia officer had to climb into the property from the balcony of the next door neighbour , crossing from one balcony to another, despite the 20 foot drop. Once inside they found the lady barely conscious, lying on the kitchen floor. She was visibly weak having been several days in the same position without eating or drinking. A SAMU response unit applied emergency aid prior to moving the injured part to the Hospital de Sant Joan d'Alacant where she is understood to be recovering. Dolon described as "an exceptional opportunity" the ability to have a safety and rescue boat so readily available that has allowed Torrevieja to enhance its position as a “safe shipping point”, which the mayor said is essential when managing such important resources in the area as fishing, sport fishing, shipping and water sports and other a multitude of leisure and recreational craft in

Free buses to celebrate World Car Free Day Next Thursday some buses around the Orihuela Costa, districts of Orihuela and to the Vega Baja Hospital will be absolutely free to passengers. Both riders are highly experienced on motorbikes having raced on the circuits here in Spain up until a few years ago and with Mitch having sat, and ridden, his first motorcycle at the tender age of five years old the pair are well equipped for what will surely be a test of endurance and conditions as the weather in the north of Spain and in the mountains of the Pyrenees and Granada will be completely different to what they will find in the Southern part of the country. With both bikes loaded with around 50kg of equipment, and as Dave says, “a few boxers

Orihuela prepares King Don Felipe to speak at United Nations for heavy rain

rihuela City Council has carried out a series of preventive actions this summer in anticipation of the torrential rains that are expected to fall during the coming weeks. The Councillor for Emergencies, Victor Valverde, told a meeting of representatives from the emergency services last week that measures taken to date have been based mainly on cleaning drainage ditches, sewers and rainwater gullies, as well as the maintenance and conservation of river banks and beds. Valverde explained these actions at the meeting of the Operational Coordination Center of Municipal Emergencies (CECOPAL), composed of the local
police, firefighters, Civil Protection and the departments of Infrastructure, Safety, Environment, Costa and Education. During the meeting it was confirmed that there was an absolute need for a rehearsal of the emergency procedures that it would be necessary to put in place in order to ensure that they are effective and that the various emergency stakeholders are able to effectively work together. According to the emergency coordinator, Jesus Rodriguez, it would be the first time that such an exercise would be carried out. He anticipated that it will take place toward the end of November or early December. In the case of heavy rains, one additional aspect that must be included in the new procedures, that has not previously been considered, he said, is the need to improve the system of communication with parents, so they know well in advance if they should be taking their children to school. But with the drafting onto the planning committee of Pedro Gomez, weather expert and the manager of the MeteOrihuela project, this should now be overcome.

Over 500 proposals in Ciudadanos draft budget H
eld under the slogan "Your city, your Torrevieja" The Councillor for Citizen Participation, Victor Ferrández and the Councillor for Finance, José Hurtado, have released
their draft budget for 2017 based on almost 500 submissions gathered from members of the public. Among the proposals they have raised is the creation of a Municipal
Housing Association, a Youth Leisure Centre and a municipal nursery school. They also want to create a network of bicycle lanes throughout the town, a municipal bike rental facility and a municipal park in La Siesta-El Chaparral. The councillors said that their proposals had been drafted following extensive meetings with the public, many of which were being submitted as a direct result. The overall feeling was that residents increasingly require better organised economic and social development in the town. Ferrández said that "the collection of urban solid waste, street cleaning and beaches, which saw an investment of 5.5 million euros in 2016 will be increased in the coming year with additional funding made available for improvements to pavements and to roads, street lighting and maintenance of parks and gardens ". These increases were as a direct result o requests from 180 citizens. He said that, in total, citizens have raised 480 proposals through 160 written submissions from associations, groups and private individuals among which are "protective measures for victims of male violence with the creation of an Emergency Fund for victims; more places in public nursing homes as well as a number of other agerelated social welfare and employment policies ". Together with those measures that require large investments, members of the public have also raised the need to act in areas of municipal jurisdiction where many of their specific needs relate to the poor state of local parks and gardens, urban furniture and speed calming measures in residential
areas. José Hurtado said that the councillors must take heed of these proposals because they come from the people who live in the Torrevieja and pay their municipal taxes. He added that this draft budget "is not a castle in the air" and proposals "it will not fall on deaf ears" because many of the proposals have the will of the people. Ferrández said that most of the requests received in the participatory budgeting process for 2017 call for improved basic services such as in rubbish collection, investment in parks, pavements and lighting and this is where the draft budget must be concentrated. But the six other major proposals must also be considered although there quite likely won’t be funding for them all so it will be necessary to put them into some sort of priority. He invited suggestions to the order in which they should be places; the municipal nursery school for children aged up to 3, a network of bicycle lanes and an associated management system bicycle rental; a centre for local associations, a municipal youth centre, the creation of a municipal social housing stock and the municipal park in La Siesta-El Chaparral.

The Sands of Time Most of us take sand for granted. Many of us hope that when we go on holiday, we will be able to enjoy a clean beach, with lots of golden sand. If we have deeper pockets, maybe we can head to one of those picture postcard Caribbean resorts offering white sand, or possibly somewhere even closer to home. I know of several beautiful, white sandy beaches in Scotland’s Hebridean Islands, although it is usually far too cold to enjoy them to the full. Another option is Spain’s Canary Islands, of course, which offer natural white sandy beaches in Fuerteventura, for instance. However, environmentally aware tourists should know than some of the gleaming white sandy beaches in Gran Canaria are not natural, since vast quantities of white sand have been imported from elsewhere, with an accompanying negative cost to the environment. So what is sand? It is a natural material that has been created from finely ground rock particles. It varies according to its location and its source of rock in the area. Another type of sand has been created over billions of years from various life forms, such as shellfish and coral, as well as from eroded limestone; this is the type of sand that is mostly found in exotic places, such as the Caribbean. The sand on most of the Canary Islands is black, simply because the islands are volcanic in origin. Maybe it is not so nice to look at, but it fulfils broadly the same purpose when building sandcastles. To the south of Gran Canaria are the Maspalomas Sand Dunes, which are spectacular two square kilometres of sand that originate from coral reefs; the area was declared a Natural Reserve in 1987. Over thou-
sands of years, these have been crushed into fine golden grains of limestone through the grinding action of glaciers. Ocean currents drag the sand to the shore where the wind gathers it into huge and spectacular dunes. The sand is blown inland from the beach, where it accumulates around shrubs. The piles of sand eventually grow larger than the shrubs and gradually move across the field of dunes to create the incredible landscape that we currently enjoy. This is as an ongoing cycle and the reason why the landscape changes, albeit quite slowly, over time and from east to west. Over the years, the area has become a tourist hotspot, and well known for the beauty of its dunes, as well as for the facilities provided by some of the best hotels in Spain. Sadly, the rapid building development in the area has changed the ongoing cycle of sand. The dunes are now hemmed in by large buildings; instead of the sand moving in a continuous every changing circle, the sand is now blown out to sea. As a result, the quantity of sand is reducing and the dunes are getting smaller. Indeed, it is suggested that within the next century, the dunes could disappear altogether. Since the dunes are an important tourist attraction and create valuable business for the Canarian economy, plans are currently being discussed by the Island Government to replenish the sand on the dunes by taking it from offshore sandbanks, and before the sand is blown out to the deep water. This will be an expensive and time-consuming process, if it works. The only alternative is removing all the hotels and large buildings in the area, which I guess wouldn't go down too well

We have yet another example where Island planning has failed to take into account the forces of nature and the need to work with, rather than against, the environment; natural forces always have their way in the end. Maybe a few, smaller hotels built to sensible, low level specifications, as on the Island of Lanzarote, would not have had the grotesque impact that the thousand bed monstrosities have had upon the local environment. Yes, the tourist capacity and income would be much reduced, but at least we would maintain the magnificence of the Maspalomas Sand Dunes. Carp R Us Club News Our match this week on the 15th of September was round two of the Autumn series and was fished on the El Bosquet complex [El Hondo] near to Catral. As always the series is the best 8 results from 10 matches. The results from the day was a win for Dave Hoare with 9.90kg using Pole and bread. Second was Steve Fell with 6.96 kg also using Pole and bread. Third using Pole and pellet was Steve Collins with 6.26kg and in fourth place Tom Marshall with 5.14kg using Feeder and bread. Round three will be fished on the Eden canal on Thursday the 22nd of September, with pegs at 8.00am and fishing from 9.00 till 2.00pm. The state of the waters in Valencia is getting more desperate by the day as the total now is just 21% of capacity. The largest Embalse in the region, CONTRERAS is down from 852hm3 to a mere 104hm3 or
only 12%. Pedrera is now 33% and falling, and what is probably the best venue for fishing in Alicante province Beniarres is only at 3% now, hardly enough to sustain life there. Our next Quiz night will be on Tuesday the 27th of September starting at 7.30pm. The cost is just 1 Euro per person and teams to a maximum of 6 are allowed to take part. Six boats and their crews competed in the first day of the Sailing Association Mar Menor’s Autumn 2016 series on September 11th, a good number considering many members have not yet returned to Spain after their summers away. Wind was 5 to 7 Knots NE and sea state moderate. It was decided by the RO to conduct one race consisting of 6 laps. A fairly lengthy course was set entailing approximately 25 to 30 minutes per lap. Start gate was between the bows of the two moored ferries with the race officials having excellent oversight from one. The start gate was slightly narrower than usual and proved to be an exciting challenge, which all boats met with excellent handling skills. First to go were the two sailfish with only 5 seconds separating them over the start line. The dinghy start was even more exciting with all 4 boats jostling for position and crossing within seconds of each other, too close to set
them apart. Six laps proved to be quite tiring for some of the crews and pretty soon they were all spaced out over the course. Despite that, with the slight adjustments of the handicaps since last season, the final results were quite close with Sirocco first followed by Shoestring Dos and Tres in close pursuit. At the debrief everyone agreed that it was a good course, a very enjoyable day. It was pleasing to note that almost everyone stayed for the debrief and a little social get together afterwards. All SAMM races take place from the CTD sports center on the beach at Los Narejos. Registration is at 10am and non-members are welcome. Socialists want land earmarked for Orihuela Costa cemetery

Orihuela Costa, which despite being responsible for half the population, doesn’t have its own cemetery, and where residents suffer serious problems as they have to be laid to rest in other municipalities. Compare this to the rest of the Orihuela municipality where the remaining 50% of the population have the use of half a dozen or more cemeteries, many serving villages with a tiny population. It is simply not acceptable and the subject must be addressed.
he Socialist Party has called for land to be earmarked in the General Plan for the construction of public cemeteries. Spokesperson Carolina Gracia says that the general plan should earmark land for two new cemeteries, one serving Orihuela city and one on the coast. Gracia added that the churchyard in Orihuela, is owned by the diocese and not the municipality. As such it is the Bishopric that sets the rates making it one of the most expensive cemeteries in Spain. She says that the council should intervene.
Gracia criticised the continued paralysis suffered by the government team (PP), which she says doesn’t appear in the General Plan 2011-2015 and hasn’t once even been discussed, an issue that as a matter of priority must be included in the forthcoming general plan.
The proposal for the allocation of land is still in draft form and in need of some modifications, said Gracia, but it will nevertheless be put before the Orihuela plenary meeting on Thursday at which the PSOE will ask for mayor Emilio Bascuñana, who held the portfolio of Planning until a few months ago, or its current head, Begoña Cuartero, to explain exactly what their intentions might be.

he former San Miguel secondary school became the venue last weekend for the very first marbles championship which was arranged by the Neighborhood Association Archangel as part of the town fiesta. The purpose was nothing more than the organisation of a day intended to bring the generations together along with the revival of a traditional game that is no longer played by children in our local parks and schools. An idea of local enthusiast, Czechoslovakian resident Petr Sejba Manuel Gómez he said that he was absolutely fed up in seeing today’s generation of children increasingly glued to their mobile phones or their computers. He hoped that the event
would encourage many of them to get off their sofa’s and get out into the outdoors where they could enjoy such a creditable that, like so many other things, is in danger of becoming a forgotten sport. Gradually the playground of the old school began to fill with families from the municipality who were there with "the aim of promoting good relations between the generations and the revival of a game with which many of the older generation have grown up. Petr Sejba, was on hand to organise the participants into their groups that lasted all morning. Sejba is an expert in the sport and was the President of the Czech Federation of Marbles until as recently as last year when he was elected as World President.

On Thursday 15th September Eurogolf played their first monthly medal of the season off the plates. The weather was perfect for golf even a little chilly early on but turned into a beautiful sunny day with a light breeze. There is a lot of work being done on La Marquesa at the moment mainly putting drainage and soft sand into the bunkers. All the improvements are for the better so obviously we tolerate the inconvenience on certain holes where they are working. THE MASTERS TROPHY - We met at Las Colinas on a cooler day than of late to compete for the prestigious Masters Trophy. The difficult course took its toll on many of us and nobody achieved the level of scoring that had been seen in recent weeks. However our everconsistent ladies came close to re-naming the trophy as the 'Mistresses Trophy' (in the nicest possible way of course). Third position went to our Social Secretary Elspeth Craig with 32 points and Sarah McCabe took 2nd place on CB with 33 pts. Masters champion on 33 points was Eric Taylor on his return from the U.K and he and Sarah also took NTP prizes Mike Green took the only other NTP. The 2's prize was shared between John Lywood and Elspeth Craig. Our next meeting is at La Peraleja on 29th September 10.00 start at a cost of 30 Euros ,playing for the Optima Optica Trophy. Las Ramblas Golf Society Well, that is the holiday season over so it is time to restart our weekly reports on the activities of the golf society. On Monday we played a Change Partners which always an enjoyable but challenging format where getting the right pairings on the right 6 holes is the key to winning. The winners with 89 pts were Terry Field, Anne Marie Weisheit, Joyce McClusky and "Albert". Unlucky runners up only one point behind were Nick Campbell, Rod Doel, Doug Wright and "Albert". Wednesday's competition was a Singles Stableford with a difference. This was one of our qualifying rounds for the Spanish Federation which means that we play off the proper yellow posts resulting in a much longer and testing golf course. This did not affect our winner Ron Phipps who came in with a 3 under par 39 pts or our scratch golfer, Terry Field, who went round in one over par gross bagging the only 2 in the process. We had a good turnout for our outing to Mar Menor and scoring was excellent. Eight players saw their handicap cut. The course was in good condition apart from one or two fairways where remedial work was in progress. The weather was a bit cooler than of late which was an added bonus. Federation Cup goes to Quesada T
his competition was played over 3 days at La Siesta, and is based on a Fours format on a round robin playing in 3 groups with the Winners of each group and the highest second team progressing to the semi-finals. There was some excellent bowling throughout the Competition and the semi-finals consisted of the Quesada team of Terry Morgan, Steve Hibberd, Sandra Heath and Carol Broomfield playing against the La Siesta four of Brian Harman, Pat Harman, Bill Jordan and Sue Jordan. This was close up to the 7th of the 12 ends when La Siesta dropped a 7, followed by a 3 on the next end from which they were never able to recover. The other semi was an all Vistabella contest with Tony French, Martin Foulcer, Maggie Furness and Ian Kenyon against Beryl Regan, Jennie Bowman, Stuart Allman and Mike Regan. This was a closer
game, but Ian’s team gained an early 4, after which they gradually increased their lead. The final was a very close game with the lead changing three times during the first 8 ends, and at the end of the 10th end Quesada led by 1 shot, but picked up a 3 on the 11th , then on the last end Terry Morgan put his first bowl directly on the jack. This left Vistabella no option but to try to move it, but despite their best efforts they were unable to achieve. Well done to Quesada for an exciting final. The presentation was made by Jean Cooper, Chairperson of Levante Lawn Bowls as well as President of La Siesta, who thanked everybody for their support and superb bowling, as well as Jim and Lyn for the excellent catering, and the Jordans for organising the event. Last, but no least thanks went to the Umpires for their attendance.

Emerald Isle Bowls Club Greenlands open trips took place on 1315th September with Emerald Isle players finishing as competition winners. Greenlands Bowls Club GREENLANDS held their April Open on the 13-14-15 with a total of 27 teams competing, sponsored by Liberty Seguros and the owner of GREENLANDS Mike Green. There was plenty of good bowling during the group stages, with teams from the Emerald Isle, Quesada (2) and La Marina reaching the Semi finals stage. After two very competitive matches the final was contested by Quesada and the Emerald Isle. They supplied us with an enthralling match with the result resting on the very last end. The outcome was a narrow victory for the Emerald Isles consisting of Drew Gerrard, Ann Marie Stephenson and Noel Davis, worthy winners in the end, unbeaten throughout the competition. Thanks also go to Hayley who kept every one watered and fed. The new season is starting. Anyone wishing to join GREENLANDS should contact Haley on 966-844-399. Monte Mar Bowls and Social Club Sponsored by Avalon Monte Mar had 3 teams in the 3 day Vera Moran competition at Emerald Isle earlier this month. All teams did really well with June Young, Ronnie Cairns, Alan Ashberry, and Bill Young narrowly losing to a team from Vistabella in the final. It was a remarkable performance as skip Bill Young had a bad fall on the first day which required 17 stitches on his leg. So well done to all concerned. After only 5 competitive matches at the helm, senor Gabi Correa has been axed as manager of CD Torrevieja. Technically his record shows played 5 lost 5, but what it doesn't reveal is that he in fact did win 1, but was cruelly denied this accolade due to a glaring error by a member of staff. This latest reversal was enough for club president Vicente to dispense with Correa´s services only 24 hours after the final whistle. Just how much the deducted points from the opening match against Almoradi have affected the players will never be known, but it does seem evident that their burning desire has waned since the opening game of the season. Who will replace Correa? Ex coach Pedreno seems favourite, but it´s far from certain, so watch this space! Prior to this match, 23 year old left sided midfielder Juanmi had put his signature on a move south to Torry, being rewarded with an immediate start, and he must have been delighted at how his new side quickly got off the mark. Only 5 mins were on the
clock when Lewis plant- Congratulations for Lewis following ed his 20 yard free kick Torry’s opening goal over the wall and into the top left hand corner of the net. That´s the good news, but the bad news is that it was only one of a handful of chances Torry created throughout the match. Rayo hit back within 5 mins when Vendrell found himself unmarked a mere 5 yards from goal, before confidently heading past Marcano. A mere 12 secs into the 2nd half and the hosts found themselves behind. Although appearing well offside, Javo received the ball before lobbing it over Marcano for a well taken winner. Soon after, a Matheus (Luis Carlos), Melli, Salamanca, Carrasco, Lewis comical moment ensued when a watering system So, not only are Torry now pointless (no comment), but they are now erupted, drenched fans and resulted in play being manager less, also appearing in total disarray. A quick fix is despersuspended for a few minutes. All in all, Torry ately needed if the boys in blue and white aren´t to face an impossiwere guilty of poor passing, slow build up play ble uphill challenge. Not only did the ref administer bookings for and little midfield creativity, which in essence is a Melli, Juanmi, Vazquez, Pablo Navas and Vicente, but centre back recipe for a disaster. Martin picked up a nasty injury, which will put him out for a few Torry Line up; Marcano, Vicente, Juanmi (Adrian games. Pavon), Vazquez, Pastor, Martin (Pablo Navas), The new manager will start his regime with a home match at the Nelson Mandela Stadium next Sunday against local rivals Novelda. CD Montesinos kicked off their 2016-17 campaign at the weekend under new coach Camacho - the third coach in as many seasons at the Los Montesinos, Alicante based club - with a trip to CD Benijofar in the Segunda Regional Grupo. Camacho will be hoping to improve on the Veja Baja outfit's fifth spot finish last term, having replaced Roberto Cases, who headed for the exit door at The Municipal in a move to UD Horadada at the end of last season. Cases had replaced long serving coach Juanpe, who was not given a new contract, after seven years at The Municipal. Alamada, Malaga born, ex-Orihuela B coach Camacho, 45, has brought in new faces, after being given the nod to take the reins by Presidente Felipe Parades to fill the vacant manager's post. With Vazquinho returning to CD Montesinos, after a season at Sporting Saladar, the key to Monte's success this season could be with the Brazilian frontman - and fellow striker Wallace. Wallace, who celebrates his 23rd birthday on October 14, played a more prolific role last term
and with a full season and experience under his belt he could be a force to be reckoned with, now that Vazquinho is back in the fold. CD Montesinos 2015-16 Player of the Year Dani O'Rourke has joined 1st Regional club Almoradi: "I have left CD Montesinos in a move to Almoradi. I thank the club very much for the encouragement given over the years - I've had great companions," Dani told me.
