BAU-SHUAN GER, the new Republic of Taiwan Ambassador to this country is confident that cultural links between the two countries are improving. His Excellency arrived here September 12, having replaced Weber Shih who left August 20. But Ger noted that the cooperation “has been bearing juicy fruits.” He pointed out that “bilateral relations have been strengthened by the deep friendship between the peoples of our two countries.” He highlighted the scholarship programme from which about 100 Vincentians have benefitted through higher education in Taiwan. His Excellency outlined that Vincentians not only learn Mandarin, “but also get to understand and appreciate the culture of Taiwan.” People in Taiwan learn about Vincentian culture “through the interaction with those young Vincentians,” His Excellency indicated. He pointed out that some Vincentians are speaking Mandarin. For him, “language and culture are inseparable.” Students at the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Community College, as well as
the general public are learning Mandarin from An-huei Siao who is from the Republic of China. CRIME AFFECTING ECONOMY CHIEF JUSTICE of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court Janice Pereira is of the view that crime is slowing down development in territories within the jurisdiction. Justice Pereira was speaking in Anguilla last Wednesday at the Opening of the Law Term 2014 to 2015. The simulcast went to bases throughout the region as well as some radio stations.
