DR. GONSALVES: ‘BEWARE OF TRINI CONTRACTORS’

Leader of the Opposition Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, with information at hand, has issued an early warning about Trinidadian contractors coming to SVG with ‘sweet deal’.

LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION Dr. Ralph Gonsalves has cautioned the NDP government against sidelining local contractors in favour of contactors from Trinidad and Tobago. According to Dr. Gonsalves, as per a recent radio broadcast on his party’s Star FM, there are a number of Trinidadian contractors, some of whom have ties with the United National Congress (UNC) currently in government, who are looking to secure contracts for infrastructural projects as well as opportunities to purchase land in SVG. His information tells him that the contractors are approaching the government offering to independently finance, design, and build multimillion-dollar road projects, with the government expected to repay the debt after a five-year period. This is the word coming from Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Security Hon. St. Clair Leacock. Minister Leacock told the API earlier this week that he was pleased with the rehabilitative work done to the Resource Centre to accommodate the officers. The Lower level of the facility now accommodates the operations of the Police Station, while the upper level provides living quarters for the officers. Outlining what this “new” location means, Minister Leacock said, “Central Leeward now needs a very strong police station, police force at a time when they are being tested and challenged and this would help the morale of the police officers, generally speaking, I think there’s going to be some fine-tuning that would be necessary…by all means get in there, get out of the rented accommodations, save money ….and provide more effective policing.” And addressing another but related issue within the Police Force, the National Security Minister pointed to his vision to have a specialised unit of skilled officers - masons, carpenters, Continued on Page 3.
