Drum roll Please… PATRON ON PERCUSSION
We are delighted to welcome Russell Hartley to the stage as our Patron on Percussion for the Saturday, April 25 Ode to America concert.
Raised outside of Kansas City, Missouri, Russ calls Lee’s Summit his home town. As a child he always had dreams of flying.
His first involvement in music was in the 5th grade band and he decided on the coronet. He played through high school also playing the baritone and finished his senior year in the concert band percussion section. He was also involved in sports and also enjoyed art classes.

Russ attended the College of the Ozarks, as an Aviation Science major. After obtaining his private pilot license he transferred to CMSU, Central Missouri State University to continue working on advanced ratings. Russ worked at the KC Downtown Airport to build time and earn a commercial license with instrument and multi-engine ratings. He flew in many capacities as he started raising a family. Finally, landing a career job flying corporate jets for a financial firm in KC and getting his ATP, Airline Transport Pilot License. He spent his entire 30-year corporate pilot career with the same firm flying a variety of jets before retiring in 2016.
“My favorite music memories were taking private trumpet lessons in the summers with Mike Metheny, going to their house early and staying late after so I could sit on the couch in the living room to watch and listen to Pat Matheny play his guitar. He was a few years older and in high school. I knew he was very good, but had no idea how famous he would become.”
Russ and his wife Kim have three grown sons. “We were snow birds to this area for four years in an RV before deciding to make the move to Venice full-time. Kim and I feel very fortunate to live here and be able to enjoy such an excellent symphony.”
Treat yourself—or a loved one or friend—to a memorable experience! Every season The Venice Symphony offers two opportunities for our patrons to take the stage and share the spotlight with our talented musicians.
• Become a Patron on Percussion and join The Symphony as a guest bass drum soloist, performing The Star Spangled Banner at one of our concerts throughout the season at The Venice Performing Arts Center. Instructionis included.
• Become a Guest Conductor and lead The Symphony on a spirited rendition of Sleigh Ride at one of our popular holiday concerts. No experience is necessary and includes a conducting rehearsal with Maestro Quinn himself. For more information email: music@thevenicesymphony.org

CONCERT NOTES
The Cowboys Overture
John Williams (born February 8, 1932) is an American composer and conductor. Over his sevendecade career, he has composed many of the best known scores in film history. The Cowboys Overture is a renowned orchestral piece he composed for the 1972 Western film The Cowboys starring John Wayne. It is known for its sweeping, Americana-style theme, blending traditional Western sounds with a modern, energetic flair, featuring prominent brass, string, and percussion sections.

With a total of 54 Academy Award nominations, John Williams is the second-most nominated person in the award’s history, after Walt Disney. He is also the oldest Academy Award nominee in any category, receiving a nomination at 91 years old!

Times Square: 1944 from On the Town
Leonard Bernstein (August 25, 1918 - October 14, 1990) was an American conductor, composer, pianist, music educator, author, and humanitarian. Considered to be one of the most important conductors of his time, he was the first Americanborn conductor to receive international acclaim. Bernstein’s honors and accolades include seven Emmy Awards, two Tony Awards, and 16 Grammy Awards (including the Lifetime Achievement Award), as well as an Academy Award nomination. He received the Kennedy Center Honor in 1981. On the Town tells the story of three sailors during World War II and their amorous adventures on a 24-hour shore leave in New York City and became an instant hit upon opening on Broadway in 1944 and lasting almost fourteen months. The musical was revolutionary in many regards. It is significant that Bernstein was the first symphonic composer to collaborate on an American musical. On the Town was also the first musical that incorporated black and white characters on stage in equal roles: as pedestrians, sailors, typical New Yorkers, holding hands during the dance numbers. Bernstein saves what is probably the best-known theme of the show, New York, New York for the final sketch, Times Square: 1944.
In the 1940s Bernstein lived in New York City in various apartments in Manhattan. He supported himself by coaching singers, teaching piano, and playing the piano for dance classes in Carnegie Hall. He found work with Harms-Witmark, transcribing jazz and pop music and publishing his work under the pseudonym “Lenny Amber”. (Bernstein translates to “amber” in German.)
CONCERT NOTES
By the River from Florida Suite
Frederick Delius (January 29, 1862 - June 10, 1934) was an English composer. Born in the north of England to a prosperous mercantile family, he resisted attempts to recruit him to commerce. He was sent to Florida by his father in 1884 to manage an orange plantation, where he soon neglected his duties, and in 1886 he returned to Europe. Having been influenced by African-American music during his short stay in Florida, he began composing. Delius was in Florida from the spring of 1884 to the autumn of 1885, living on a plantation at Solano Grove on the Saint Johns River, about 25 miles south of Jacksonville. In Delius scholar Christopher Palmer’s words, Florida Suite (1887, revised 1889) is an orchestral suite “an expertly crafted synthesis of Grieg and Negroid Americana”. Delius composed the work after his return from Florida, inspired by its landscape and culture, mainly centered on the St. Johns River. It is an example of the type of music for which Delius was both lauded and disparaged. By the River is one of the suite’s four movements.

Moon River from Breakfast at Tiffany’s
Henry Mancini (April 16, 1924 - June 14, 1994) was an American composer, conductor, arranger, pianist and flutist. Often regarded as one of the greatest composers in the history of film, he won four Academy Awards, a Golden Globe, and twenty Grammy Awards, plus a posthumous Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1995. His works include the theme and soundtrack for the Peter Gunn television series as well as the music for The Pink Panther film series (The Pink Panther Theme) and Moon River from Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

After turning 18, Mancini enlisted in the United States Army Air Forces in 1943. While in basic training in Atlantic City, New Jersey, he met musicians being recruited by Glenn Miller. Owing to a recommendation by Miller, Mancini was first assigned to the 28th Air Force Band before being reassigned overseas to the 1306th Engineers Brigade in France. In 1945, he helped liberate the Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp in Austria.
CONCERT NOTES
Don’t Rain On My Parade from Funny Girl

Jule Styne December 31, 1905 - September 20, 1994) was an English-American songwriter and composer widely known for a series of Broadway musicals, including several that also became successful films: Gypsy, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and Funny Girl. At the age of eight, Styne proved to be a prodigy and performed with the Chicago, St. Louis, and Detroit symphonies before he was 10 years old. Scored by Jule Styne, with lyrics by Bob Merrill, and book by Isobel Lennart, Funny Girl opened on Broadway in 1964. The semi-biographical plot is based on the life and career of comedian and Broadway star Fanny Brice, featuring her stormy relationship with entrepreneur and gambler Nicky Arnstein. Barbra Streisand starred in the original Broadway musical The production received eight nominations at the 18th Tony Awards. The original cast recording of Funny Girl was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2004.
Colonial Dance

Florence Price (April 9, 1887 - June 3, 1953) was an American classical composer, pianist, organist, and music teacher. Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, Price was educated at the New England Conservatory of Music, and was active in Chicago from 1927 until her death in 1953. Price is noted as the first AfricanAmerican woman to be recognized as a symphonic composer, and the first to have a composition played by a major orchestra. Price composed over 300 works: four symphonies, four concertos, as well as choral works, art songs, chamber music, and music for solo instruments. Colonial Dance is a celebration of cultural heritage, resilience, and the power of music to unite people across boundaries. Through her composition, Florence Price pays homage to the traditions and music of her ancestors, infusing the classical form with her own unique voice and perspective. Her ability to fuse diverse musical elements into a cohesive and captivating whole demonstrates her exceptional skill as a composer.
In February 2025, a crater on the planet Mercury was named in her honor. In that same month, pianist Michelle Cann and soprano Karen Slack won best classical solo vocal album at the 2025 Grammys for their recording Beyond The Years: Unpublished Songs Of Florence Price.
CONCERT NOTES
Glitter and Be Gay from Candide
In 1953, renowned playwright Lillian Hellman proposed to Leonard Bernstein that they adapt Voltaire’s Candide for the musical theater. The original Broadway production opened at the Martin Beck Theater in New York on December 1, 1956 to mixed reviews and closed on February 2, 1957. Fortunately the original cast album was recorded by Columbia Records, so the music thrived. The recording sold well, and Bernstein’s score gained a sort of cult status.
Overture from West Side Story

Inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story is set in the mid-1950s in the Upper West Side of Manhattan in New York City, then a multiracial, blue-collar neighborhood. The musical explores the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds. Bernstein’s score blends jazz, Latin rhythms, symphonic sweep and musical-comedy conventions in groundbreaking ways. The original 1957 Broadway production ran for 732 performances. The production was nominated for six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, in 1958, winning two.
Appalachian Spring

Aaron Copland (November 14, 1900 - December 2, 1990) was an American composer, critic, writer, teacher, pianist, and conductor of his own and other American music. Copland was referred to by his peers as well as critics as the “Dean of American Music”, best known for his works in the 1930s and 1940s. Appalachian Spring was commissioned by Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge for Martha Graham. Copland began work on Graham’s then-untitled scenario in Hollywood in June 1943, completing the ballet a year later in Cambridge, MA. Graham told Copland that she wanted the dance to be “a legend of American living, like a bone structure, the inner frame that holds together a people,” and the ballet and its music were immediately understood as reflections of a national identity, of hope and fulfillment in a difficult time.
“…the Spring that is being celebrated is not just any Spring but the Spring of America; and the celebrants are not just half a dozen individuals but ourselves in different phases,” John Martin in a New York Times review.

SUPPORT THE SYMPHONY
Your personal investment is the reason The Venice Symphony delivers exceptional concerts and affordable music education. Together, musical excellence is sustained and lives transformed.
Annual Fund – The Venice Symphony’s primary source of operating revenue and outreach. Contributions may be given monthly, quarterly or annually.
Donor Advised Funds and iRA Distributions – A contribution from an IRA or DAF is an excellent way to achieve your charitable giving objectives. *
Employee Match – Many corporations will match their current employee’s or retiree’s donation. This can potentially double or triple the amount you give.
Living Trusts and Bequests – Pledge a will bequest or name The Venice Symphony as a beneficiary of a retirement or life insurance plan. *
Monthly Giving Option – An easy and affordable way to offer support! Simply select monthly recurring payments when giving online or when visiting or calling our administrative offices.
Play it Forward - Donate an instrument and help make a difference for a young musician in our community.
Small Business and Corporate Engagement – Strengthen your community by offering support through concert sponsorships, participating in special events, advertising or other unique opportunities. Let’s curate a doable option for your business!
Stock and Securities – Gifts of appreciated stocks are welcomed and may be advantageous to the donor from a tax point of view. *
For more information on any of these opportunities, speak with a Development Team member by calling 941-207-8822 or visit our Administrative Offices.
*Because each situation is different, please consult your tax advisor about tax benefits.
