Mow to the Right Height for a Stronger, Healthier Lawn

(StatePoint) How short to mow is a commonly debated topic, and getting it right is not only tricky, but critical to a healthy lawn.
“The goal is to find the right height for the turf type. Mowing too low can over-expose your lawn to the sun, weakening the roots and creating the potential for a weed infestation; and mowing too high runs the risk of excess moisture build-up, creating a welcoming environment for pests and disease,” says Exmark marketing manager, Lenny Mangnall. “On the other hand, grass mowed to the right height can most effectively leverage vital sunlight, rain and nutrients for deeper, denser, stronger and healthier blades.”
A video that Exmark made to demystify lawn care explains that to strike the right balance, you should follow the golden rule of mowing: Never cut off more than onethird of the blade at a time, even if your lawn is overgrown. While you may feel like you’re saving time, overzealous mowing is doing your lawn a disservice. Gradually lowering your blades to the desired height will help maintain a strong root system and lush yard canopy.
Another consideration is grass type, with warm-season grasses and cool-season grasses falling into two mowing height ranges.
For warm-season grasses, like Zosia and Bermuda, drop the deck height of your mower close to its lowest setting, between 1-2 inches high. These grasses thrive in scorching summer sun and can handle a lower height. If you have cool-season grass, like Fescue or Kentucky Bluegrass, cut it a little bit higher, between 2.5-4 inches. These grasses are built for freezing winters and need some height as protection from the elements.
It’s also important to remember that over the course of a year, the height you mow to within the recommended range of your grass type will change. Once springtime rolls around, lower your deck height by a half inch from your normal summer height. This encourages new growth.
During summer, mow on the higher end of your grass type’s specified range. Taller grass provides shade to the soil, helping it retain the moisture needed to stay healthy and cool.

(StatePoint) Lawn striping isn’t just a terrific way to elevate curb appeal, it’s key to a healthier lawn.
“With lawn striping, you can add some dimension and interest to your lawn and give it a ‘finished’ professional-quality look. At the same time, lawn striping benefits the overall health of your grass,” says Lenny Mangnall, marketing manager at Exmark.
Not sure how to mow stripes? The secret is alternating patterns. Stripe east to west one week, cut diagonally the next. Because you’re reverse cutting and changing the pattern, you’re not stressing the grass as much as a typical cut. This will reduce soil compaction, ruts, and scalping, and stop grass from lying down, inviting in light, air, nutrients and water, and preventing the buildup of unhealthy thatch.
While a striping kit will push the grass over farther, you don’t actually need one to achieve the look. Any mower can be used for striping, although zero turn and riding mowers will make complicated patterns, like diamonds, easier. One simple trick for the best results is to mow your lawn about half an inch higher than usual, as longer blades will bend more.
To tailor the look of your striped lawn,
first, decide which direction you want your stripes to run. Stripes that are perpendicular to the street will be more noticeable than ones that are horizontal. Start on an edge of the lawn and mow a straight line; to keep your pass straight, look about 10 feet in front of the mower, not at the ground right in front of you. At the end of your row, be sure to lift the mower deck as you turn. Mow in a straight line next to the first stripe. You might also consider mowing in a checkerboard or diamond pattern. No matter what pattern you choose, remember that it’s supposed to be fun, so enjoy yourself!

Ingredients:
1 whole packet brisket (12–16 pounds)
Kosher salt
Coarse black pepper
Garlic powder
Beef tallow (collected during the cook)
Steps:
1. Trim your brisket: Trim the fat cap down to about 1/4 inch. Remove any hard, waxy fat that won’t render. Round out the brisket by trimming off any thin edges or sharp corners that could dry out during the cook. You’re aiming for a smooth, even shape so it cooks consistently. If your setup allows, place a drip tray under the brisket to catch rendered fat — this is the beef tallow that you’ll use later.
2. Season your brisket: Season generously on all sides with kosher salt and coarse black pepper. Add garlic powder. Make sure everything is evenly coated.
3. Smoke overnight: Preheat your grill to 200 degrees F using Bear Mountain Gourmet Blend pellets. Place the brisket fat-side down or facing the heat source. The idea that fat cap up “self-bastes” the brisket is a myth. Fat-side down protects the meat and intramuscular fat from the more direct, intense heat coming from below in the pellet smoker (smokers have heat coming from the side).
Let the brisket go over night. No spritzing, no wrapping, no checking. This is where the ease comes in — low temperature, steady smoke and time doing the work for you.
4. Increase temperature and continue cooking: In the morning, increase the smoker temperature to 250 degrees F. Continue cooking the brisket unwrapped. Now you’re focused on rendering. Press on the fat cap — when your finger goes in easily and doesn’t bounce back, that’s your cue to wrap.
6. Cook until probe-tender: Continue cooking until probe-tender. You’ll typically land somewhere between 198-205 degrees F internal, but the real test is feel. You want it to feel like it is sliding into room-temperature butter.
7. Rest the brisket: Remove the brisket from the smoker and let it rest, wrapped, on the counter for at least 1 hour, until the carryover cooking stops and the internal temperature begins to drop. Then transfer it to a 140 degrees F oven or a cooler.
You want the internal temperature to come down below 160 degrees F. The ideal slicing temperature is between 140–160 degrees F. You can hold it in this range for several hours as long as your holding temperature stays around 140.
8. Slice and serve: Separate the point and flat, if needed. Slice the flat against the grain into thin slices. Slice or cube the point depending on preference. You’re looking for slices that hold together, are fully rendered, and pull apart easily.
