LETTER FROM FACULTY ADVISORS
Working with the talented members of the Lower School Art and Literary Club on Unquowazine Volume 7 has been an absolute joy. Each student brought their own unique voice and creativity to every stage of the magazine’s development, and the results speak for themselves—the collective work from our Lower School this year is truly outstanding. In addition to curating submissions, the Unquowazine staff also contributed their own original pieces, including interviews, word art, and some incredible artwork. Their creativity and enthusiasm were evident in every detail. Cassidy and Micah, along with their fellow staff members, took the lead in gathering much of the content. They approached the process with thoughtfulness and care, ensuring that each student’s work was represented with authenticity and respect. As their advisor, I had the pleasure of supporting and guiding them throughout this journey. A heartfelt congratulations to all for your dedication and effort—what a wonderful issue you’ve created! LETTER FROM THE EDITORS
Dear Readers, Welcome to Unquowazine Vol. 7. We are glad to show you our amazing magazine. We have been working hard to create this year’s Unquowazine for the last couple of months. We have collected a lot of fantastic work from Lower School students, from Pre-K to 4th. In Pre-K, they submitted their fabulous fairy tale reader responses to us. Kindergarten students submitted some awesome polar bears, and first grade gave us some fantastic personal narratives. Second graders wrote poems and short stories, and third graders submitted some poetry and non-fiction books. Finally, the fourth grade sent in realistic fiction, mysteries, and informational pieces. Many students participated in the Unquowazine contest, which we all appreciate a lot. A lot of people contributed to Unquowazine by submitting drawings, which is great! We would like to thank everyone, including our staff, for contributing to Unquowazine. They contributed original work in the form of interviews, comics, and artwork. In addition, Miles and Garrett did an excellent job on the cover. Lastly, we would like to thank Mrs. E for guiding us in making Unquowazine Volume 7. Thank you for reading! Question: How long have you been a science teacher? Mrs. Noyes: I have been a science teacher for 30 years. 27 at the Audubon and 3 here at Unquowa. .
Question: How do you know what lessons to teach to each grade? Mrs. Noyes: Each grade has a certain curriculum and I try to find as many interesting experiments and activities that will keep the students interested in the topic. Question: What inspired you to be a science teacher? Mrs. Noyes: I loved nature and I wanted people to love it as much as I do and notice how incredible our earth is. Miles Mrs. Engelke Language Arts Writing Date Ferocious Floods Introduction Floods can be big or small and can cause serious damage. A flood is a large amount of water that collects overtime and usually forms on dry land when it rains. The earth has always had the same amount of water. Weather is a big part that causes floods, for example, rain and thunderstorms. The power of floods is amazing but dangerous at the same time. Where Floods Happen A flood can happen anywhere in the world but there is no specific place a flood can occur. Usually a place where there is a certain body of water like rivers, lakes, and ponds. Floods can happen in low lying areas when rainfall or snowmelt occurs faster than ever, the water collects in the low lying areas and can become dangerously deep ?!?! A flood can happen fast or slow. It depends on the size and power of the weather and snow melt.

What Makes It Happen When it rains the soil sucks up the water but when the soil has no more room to fit water the water slides into the body of water and the water rises. Time passes by and water rises when the water overflows it spills out and causes a flood. And snowmelt is another way why floods occur. Tsunamis are less common to cause a flood but still can.
What People Do To Reduce The Impact To reduce the impact of floods people fill bags with sand and stack them to form a wall. In many places people have built defenses against floods, if these fail, emergency crews come with inflatables to redirect

water. Architects design buildings to be able to withstand a flood. They sometimes use sump pumps, check valves suck up the water.
Interesting Facts In the USA floods cause more deaths to humans than lightning, hurricanes and tornadoes. It only takes six inches of fast moving water to make someone fall and possibly drown. Often water is usually contaminated with gas, chemicals, glass, tree branches, metal, and electricity used items like lightbulbs. Conclusion In conclusion, floods can be dangerous and a cool sight at the same time. In this report we learned about where they happen, what people do to reduce the impact, Interesting facts, what makes it happen and the introduction and finally what you are reading now the conclusion. Terrifying LARGE WAVES TSUNAMIS Do you know what a tsunami is? Tsunamis are very giant waves that crash to the beach. Usually caused by an earthquake. If you don’t know what it is or you would like to learn more, this is the report for you to read!
Where do Tsunamis occur? Tsunamis typically occur in the water. For example, in the ocean, inland seas, and in any large body of water. More than 60% of Tsunamis happen in the Pacific Ocean specifically near the ring of fire. They can also happen in the Indian Ocean.

How do the Giant Waves of a Tsunami Happen? Most tsunamis are caused by underwater earthquakes, landslides, and volcanoes. If you feel an earthquake on the beach, a tsunami might be coming soon!! Some signs that help you know if a tsunami is coming are a change in sea level, a very powerful earthquake, and animals leaving for safety.
How To Stay Safe In A Tsunami Lastly, if you think a tsunami is near you probably should listen to the news, radio, or a weather alert. So, you can escape and have time to leave to get to higher ground. If you are in a building going to the highest floor it will be harder for the tsunami to reach you. You should not go with your belongings, just leave them there if you don’t want to get caught in a tsunami!! If you see a tsunami coming, leave immediately so you have time to escape. You may only have minutes to leave so make it quick. How can we be prepared for a Tsunami? We can not make sunamis go away but we can be better prepared if one were to happen right now. For example, be alert, especially if you live near any large body of water! Fun Facts

Tsunami comes from the word “tsu” which means harbor. “Nami” comes from the Japanese term “wave.” In 2011, a tsunami in Japan destroyed more than 300,000 buildings. A tsunami can go a very far distance and speed! You may be surprised how high it can reach. For example, in 1958, Alaska had a huge tsunami! It reached 1,700 feet (518) m tall, which is taller than the Empire State Building! In 2004, the deadliest tsunami occurred in Indonesia. It caused huge waves in the Indian Ocean. They crashed on the shore in India, Sri Lanka and Thailand. Sadly, more than 238,000 people died.
Conclusion Sadly, I will be wrapping up my report but I hope you enjoyed it! I hope you have learned something new from this report about a devastating tsunami!! I would not want to be stuck in a tsunami AT ALL!!!

The Mystery of the Sponge
Hi! I’m Grace and my family has just moved away from Connecticut and to Jamaica. We decided to move because it was very hot there. Once we got inside of our new house my dad asked, “Do you want to go on a family bike ride?” “Sure,” my mom answered. “But we should unpack first” “Good idea” I said. We all unpacked and headed downstairs after. Then, we got on our bikes and started biking. I looked around and noticed that there was no nature. Not even a single patch of moss. Emily pointed out that there was only one other house. “Huh, that is weird,” I said. “There are no lights on in the house.” My family thought it was strange, too. While we passed by the creepy home, it smelt like nature, especially leaves. That was also strange because there was no nature around us. “How about we go inside the creepy house when we

head home?” I knew it was risky but it would be an adventure. “Sure” they all replied. As we were heading home we stopped by the creepy house. The house was unlocked already. “That is weird,” Michael whispered. As we walked in the house, we all went into different rooms. Emily went in the kitchen, my dad went in the office, my mom went in the dining room, Michael went in the laundry room, and I went in the bedroom. There wasn’t a lot there. I saw a bed, a closet, some socks, and that was kind of it. Then I found a letter. “Guys!” I called out. “Come in the bedroom!” When they were upstairs I showed them the letter. We all read it in our head. It said “Dear friend, I am going on vacation to Texas. I will be cutting more forests down. The sponges will be sold tomorrow, at 10:00 AM. The land is all almost gone! (mwhahahaha) From, Aaron Krause” We all gasped in shock. “That explains why there is no more land left!” my mom said to all of us. “They are ruining the Earth!” I said angrily. “Let's go home then do some research about this Aaron Krause guy” When we were downstairs we all got our devices. I started off searching up “Who is Aaron Krause?”. It said that Aaron Krause is a sponge owner of a

company called “Scrub Daddy” “Guys! I have a great idea!” I shouted. “What if we make a video about what he is doing?” “That is actually a great idea!” Michael replied. We started heading home and setting up the cameras in the kitchen. We each filmed ourselves telling the camera what was going on. “And…posted” my dad said as he finished. “Well today was quite an adventure” my dad said “Yeah” I said while I was exhausted. “Lets get some sleep” my mom told us. We all were tired so we went to bed. The next day I woke up and felt really tired. I looked at the clock and it was 9:30. I got out of bed and yelled, “Guys! It’s 9:30!” I sprinted downstairs and they were already there. “What?” I asked. “How long have you been down here for?” “Since 7:00 AM” Michael replied. “We didn’t want to wake you up,” my mom told me. “You looked tired” “Did you check the video that we posted yet? I asked my family. “No, but we really should.” my mom responded “Whoa!” Michael said. “My video went viral!” “Oh my gosh, so did my video!” I said. “How many views is on the video?” my dad asked curiously. “10 million!” “Million?!?!” my family said. Then they all checked their videos. “Same here!!!” they said at the same time. Then I checked my comments on my video. They were all mostly hateful

comments until I saw the police’s comment. It said “I’m on a lookout for him! If you find him please dial 911 immediately” I showed my family that comment and they were glad that he was going to get arrested. “Wait, it's 10:00 AM!” my mom called out. We all started going to the Scrub Daddy website. We looked at the reviews of the new products and everyone was putting thumbs down emojis. We were so happy that we stopped him in time before the earth had no more plants! “We can’t do anything about the nature he has cut down for the new launch!” Emily cried out. “But we can recycle it!” I answered. “But no we can’t Grace we don’t even have the sponge” “Emily we can call the police and tell them that they can help us recycle it” dad said. Then I heard a car driving. “Shhhh” “I hear something, listen” I whispered. Then we peeked out the window. I tried getting a closer look. Then I saw it was Aaron Cruise. “It’s him,” I said quietly. Then my sister gasped. “He probably hasn’t sawn the video yet”. “We should really call the police,” I told my family. “So what are we waiting for?!” my dad said in excitement. Then my mom whipped out her phone. She dialed 911 right away. My mom explained to the police officers what had happened. “Oh no!” the police officers replied. “We will be there in 5 minutes” Once my mom hung up on the phone, we all were so happy. “We did it” I squealed. 5 minutes later we saw the police officers arrive. We saw the police officers put him in handcuffs. Then one of

the police officers went to our door. “Ding dong” rang the doorbell. “I’ll get it!” Emily said. When Emily opened the door, the police officers said “Thank you very much for finding this out”. “No problem,” Emily said to him. “As a reward we would love to give you ten thousand dollars” the officer told us. “Thousand?!?!” I scream with joy. “Yup, you heard that right” Then he gave us a briefcase full of money. “Thank you so much officer,” my dad said. “Don’t thank me, I should be thanking you!” he replied.

So people get somewhere safe like China or Japan. Good luck.” That could happen. So if it does happen and you want to know what to do READ THIS PASSAGE!
Where does a wildfire happen? A wildfire can happen anywhere in the world from Beijing China to California USA and everywhere in between. But just because wildfires can happen anywhere in the world doesn’t mean that some wildfires can’t be worse than others. Wildfires in Arizona are often worse than wildfires in Antarctica. Another name for a wildfire is a forest fire. Why? Because wildfires often happen in a forest.

What makes a wildfire happen is a very, very dry place. It hasn’t rained in weeks. The woods are getting drier and drier every day. Rumbling storm clouds hang in the sky, a hot wind blows and lightning flashes. IT’S A WILDFIRE! What can also make a wildfire happen are cigars, bonfires, and dry plants.
What can people do to reduce the impact of a wildfire?
What people can do to reduce the impact of a wildfire is to water their plants, not use cigarettes or any kind of smoking device, and steer clear from lighting bonfires. These things all use fire which, though may not seem like it, can get out of control and a wildfire can start. Conclusion Remember that I said what I said about a wildfire starting in a very, very dry place. Well, what can also start it is a very bad drought.

Behind The Walls
My family and I just moved into a new house in Vulture Arizona. I did not want to move AT ALL. When we arrived, I thought Vulture Arizona was not what I expected. There was no sign of life. There were only a few birds, squirrels, and houses but no one in the houses. I was creeped out. When we got to the house, it was beautiful; I loved it. My dad said, “I think it is beautiful.” He, my sister, my brother, and I walked in. “It’s so pretty,” my sister Emily said. Then my mom came in. Her jaw fell down. “Wow,” she said. I love it. “

We all put our stuff down and went upstairs. We fought over who got each room. “I call this one,” my brother Bennett said. Bennett got the biggest room, Emily got the second biggest room, and I got the smallest. When I entered my room, the only one left, I screamed “Emi Bennett.” They came running in. “What?” they both said. I pointed to the wall. On the wall, it told a riddle. Emi read the riddle, “Come and find me whoever you are. Come and find me for one and all”. I was scared.“Can we get mom?” I asked. “No,” Bennett said, “we do not want to make her scared. She is already freaking out”. “Ok,” I said. That night I slept on an air mattress, staring at the riddle, and thinking of what it meant. After a long bit I fell asleep. In the morning I woke up to the riddle on my wall. I walked downstairs thinking. “Good morning” my mom said to me as I walked into the kitchen. “Good morning,” I said back. Bennett walked in and grabbed me by the arm. He pulled me away before my mom could say hello. “You have to tell mom about the riddle. Lead her into your room then she will see” he said in a stern like voice. “Does Emi know?” I asked. “Yes, I talked to her today. She is fine with it,” he whispered. Bennett left the kitchen with no word.

I spun around to face my mom, looked around and saw no sine of my dad. “Where is dad?" I questioned my mom. “Oh he is running errands in town,” she told me. “ohhh …. Ok.” I ran up the stairs to Bennett’s room. On his door a sign said “ DO NOT COME IN ” but I went in anyway. “Hey, why are you here? Did you read the sign… it says DO NOT COME IN.” Bennett said in an angry voice. “ I did read the sign but I need to ask you a question … a really GOOD question,” I told him. “My question is” I told him slowly. “Yess” He answered “well … can I tell dad first” I whined. “ Why do you want to tell dad first?” he questioned me. “ I think he will handle it better,” I told him. “ Just tell Mom I do not care,” He said sleepily. I went downstairs and told my mom. She was shocked and she did not know what to say. We went up to my room, and she saw the message. “ What does this mean?” she asked me. “ I do not know. But Emi did see some string from the sealing. It might lead us to something.” We went to go and get Emi and Bennett. “Where is that string that you saw yesterday?” I asked her. “ Umm right around the corner,” she responded. “Right

this way” she jumped up as she said it. We found the string and pulled it. Stairs came tumbling down. “ Wow,” we all said in astonishment. We went up the hidden stairs scaredly. There was a box on a table sitting there, it was locked. We tried to open up the box. It would not budge, not one little bit. “ What if we tried the house code number? ” Emi suggested. “ Ok ” my mom said back to her. We tried the house code number, … “ IT WORKED ” My mom hollered. My dad came rushing up the stairs “ I’m home ” he screamed. “What is going on up here?” he asked us. “Long story,” I said to him quickly. “Now help us.” Inside the box, there was a letter it said…..
“I have hidden a prize for whoever you are hoping that you will take it. Here are some blueprints. There is a hidden room that the prize is in. I Hope you find it bye! …….. Ohhhhhh and sorry for the message on the wall just trying to make it scary. Bye,” my mom read aloud. “Wait what is happening” my dad asked AGAIN. “LONG STORY!” we all screamed at him.

We took out the blue prints, and there we saw the hidden room on the blueprints. There was a little place where you push some bricks and the secret room was there. We went over to where you push the bricks. This time my dad pushed the bricks, THE RIGHT BRICKS and then the walls came out and pushed to the side. We went in and there sitting all around the room was money. We grabbed all the money that we could grab until the room had no more money in it. We were soooo happy that we had found a lot of money. “ We're rich ………….. Well, almost rich” I said to the family in a happy then sad voice. “ What do we do with all of this? ” My dad asked us.” “What if we move to a new house? This one is kind of scarey, and weird,...... mostly weird.” Bennett told all of us, “ NOOOOOOO ” we all hollered at him. “ We will keep the money and live happily ever after ” Emi announced to the whole family. “Yes we will do what Emi says” said my mom. “Ya” we screamed except for Bennett “noooo” he said quietly screaming. I am so happy that we found the money and I love the house. So we lived happily ever after.

Two Amazing Books! Have you ever thought about what it would be like if you were a colonist a long time ago? If you have or just want an interesting book to read you hit the jackpot! Read Roanoke the Lost Colony by Jane Yolen and Blood on the River by Elisa Carbone. When reading Blood on the River, follow Samuel when he goes to the New World to learn all about life in the colony. So sit back, relax and start reading two amazing books. Blood on the River and Roanoke the Lost Colony have many similarities. Both books took place in Virginia and had troubles with the native tribes. Some of them were friendly and some were violent. And of course they had trouble against the natural world. Other problems included hunger and bad weather. In my opinion, it seemed very hard for the colonists to survive in this land at that time.

Although the books are similar, they also had some differences. Some of the differences include the characters. Blood on the River has a main character, Samuel, an orphan and the story is told from his perspective. There is no main character in Roanoke the Lost Colony. We also don't know what happened to the Roanoke colonists. But in Blood in the River we do know what happened. Both are very interesting books to talk about and read.
In conclusion, I feel that both of these books are great for people if they want to know about the colonists and the hardships that they faced when they tried to get to the New World . The books are informative and I hope you agree with my recommendation.

The Similarities and Differences of Roanoke: The Lost Colony and Blood on the River
Did you ever wonder what it would be like to live in the late 1500s or early 1600s? You can learn about it in these books and when you’re done, I’m sure you will wish you had known all of the facts that you will learn in the next few minutes! Enjoy!
In Blood on the River, some of the characters are kids, and you can watch them grow up and change their ways as you watch them experience life in Jamestown in the early 1600s. The narrator is Samuel, who is the main character. It is cool to hear the perspective of someone who experienced the events. Even though Samuel is not a real person and is just made up, the author does such a great job of pretending that he is real that it seems that he is. This book is based in the early 1600s. Despite the narrator being fictional, there are quotes at the beginning of each chapter that are from diary entries and books that some of the Colonists

2 wrote. This makes the story seem more Nonfiction even though it is Historical Fiction.
In Roanoke: The Lost Colony, the narrator is outside of the story. This makes it so that we hear a different perspective. This is more of a secondhand account because this person did not “live the story”. Although the narrator did not experience the series of events in the book, the author uses a lot of “spicy words” and sensory details so it sounds just as real as a narrator that is in the book. This book is based in the late 1500s. It is factual and based on real things that happened at a point in history. At the end, all of the Colonists disappeared without a trace except the word “CROATOAN” carved into a tree.
Here are some things that both books have in common: Roanoke: The Lost Colony and Blood on the River are both about some Colonists who started in England and came to Virginia to build a settlement in the “New World”. They both have to do with Native Americans and a lot can happen in just a few chapters. They are also both violent and part of history. Lastly, they are both very suspenseful and have lots of cliffhangers.
