AN UNQUOWA TRADITION A WORD FROM OUR HEAD OF SCHOOL On the first day back from Thanksgiving, we had an unexpected early dismissal due to the threat of heavy snow. The snow did not arrive but the early dismissal gave Mr. Mitchell and Mr. Kelley, our resident Winterfest “Fairies” time to hang the Winterfest banners and install the stained glass windows that are the first step in transforming our gym into a medieval castle. I loved watching our kids respond to the surprise transformation and I love watching those first few rough rehearsals - kids coming to the gym with lyrics and harmonies in their heads and eager to sing them while adding the choreography that Mrs. Kirk has designed to bring the piece to life. It’s the first attempt for fifty kids to go through tying music to movement. I always watch these rehearsals knowing that every time our kids do a run-through, they will get one step closer to the powerful synchronicity they’ll achieve during the final Thursday evening performance of Winter Festival. I watch it build every year, and the process is heartbreakingly beautiful in its certainty. Each year I feel so lucky to witness not just the end result but the magical process. Winter Festival is always an amazing event because it’s the culmination of a month of learning and mastering songs, dances and lines that leads to an evening of every student “nailing it” in a way that is magical. Each year I am ever more grateful to our performing arts teachers: Megan Kirk and Jennifer Kenny who write a script and design choreography specifically with our kids in mind and David Coe who orchestrates live music and leads his talented students in playing it, to Lloyd Mitchell who trains a tech crew who keeps the lights and sound professionally on cue, to our chefs who provide a festive dessert beyond belief and to a host of others who add the touches that make this night beyond belief. Our entire school and returning alums who join in the closing traditional songs at the program’s end bond over its performance each year. We all need a little magic in our lives and we can all benefit from building new memories, laughing with friends and experiencing the pride of creating a performance that provides both magic and memories for ourselves and our families and our friends. May you enjoy the tale we spin for you tonight, may you sing along if the spirit moves you, and may you and your family have a New Year filled with joy and peace. All the best, Sharon Lauer

A Knight at the Unquowa Museum

The Unquowa Museum has been welcoming visitors from near and far, for over 102 years! What makes this museum so unique? Want to know a little secret? The Unquowa Museum is not run by just any ordinary group, no this museum is run by the Royal Unquowa Family. The Royal Unquowa Family rules the museum by following the message of YORUMS (Ye Olde Royal Unquowa Mission Statement). When a family of tourists visit the museum, they soon learn that the exhibits are not what they appear to be. Georgie, the youngest family member, is very curious about the extraordinary YORUMS exhibit, that is the heart and soul of the museum. He quickly learns that “You Can’t Touch This” YORUMS, and that it must remain in its special frame at all times. When it does so, this is what empowers all beings at the museum to live with an “unafraid spirit!” What would happen if it was stolen? Would the museum turn to chaos? Get Ready to join the Knight Guard as he takes you on a most unusual museum tour that will leave you Speechless!

A WORD FROM THE DIRECTORS

In August, one of my colleagues asked “are you ready for Winterfest?” Hmm, curious question for the start of the school year. A December production was not on my mind. By the end of that day, multiple people had made similar inquiries! I wondered, wow - what’s the deal with Winterfest? Fast forward several months, now I get it. Winterfest is a big deal! As I prepare this message, the final rehearsals have yet to occur, but the beautiful spirit and effects of Winterfest have already reverberated throughout the Unquowa family. Winterfest is more than a one-hour show, it is a fourmonth journey of growth, learning, collaboration and fun. In this year’s production, the YORUMS plays an exciting lead role, and this is a great opportunity for the entire Unquowa community to reconsider and refocus on the mission statement. As a new faculty member I greatly appreciate this opportunity. Through my introduction and interaction with the Unquowa family, I have grown to more deeply appreciate YORUMS and to experience it daily. It is invigorating and uplifting! Please enjoy our show and your own journey to experience and more deeply appreciate YORUMS. Thank you to all who have assisted with producing this year’s show and congratulations to all of the students who will be on and behind the stage making Winterfest a great success! — Jennifer Kenny Winterfest truly is the most wonderful time of the year and I am so excited about this year’s show! Planning and preparing this show has been a joy from the very start. This summer - when I first met Jennifer, our new drama teacher, Winterfest was one of the first topics we began to discuss. I could tell by her excitement and energy that this show was going to be amazing! The story changed, many times, until we got it right! When we had the final version of the script and music to share with the students I was thrilled. Each student embraced their part in the show and worked extremely hard to put together what you are seeing today. From Tech Crew, to the Lower School performers, to the Upper School vocalists and instrumentalists; everyone put in their best. It has been a fantastic journey helping to create such a magical show. The message the audience is left with at the end of this show is one that I am passionate about. The power of YORUMS lies within each one of us. To live a life full of an “unafraid spirit.” Thank you to everyone, faculty, staff, parents, and of course students, who came together to make this show a huge success. It’s so great to see all of the students singing, dancing and laughing together, and the smiles from teachers as they walk through the hall while a rehearsal is in progress. No less remarkable is the physical transformation of the school as thrones, banners and castles begin to appear seemingly out of nowhere. Winterfest 2019 promises to be another great one! All About Our Cast and Crew RUTHY ALFAGEME (LEAD GATOR) This is Ruthy’s second Winterfest! Last year, she was a Stick Dancer, but this year she is stepping out of the ensemble as Lead Gator. As one might expect from her love of performing, Ruthy is most looking forward to singing and dancing this year. Like many of us, Ruthy looks forward to the Candle Dance, which is her favorite Winterfest tradition. In her free time, Ruthy loves reading and skiing, though we recommend she avoid trying them both at the same time! Keep your eyes on the slopes!!! Watch out for tha--ELIJAH AMES (ANNOUNCER #2) Eli is gearing up for his second Winterfest! Last year, he was a Stick Dancer, but is hanging up his stick-y shoes for a microphone in his new role this year: Announcer #2! Eli is most excited to show off his acting skills to the Unquowa community. His favorite part of the show is seeing and performing in dances with his friends from different cultures around the world. As a karate enthusiast, Eli can occasionally be seen practicing his forms during recess. Hi-YAH! MATTHEW ANTO (Instrumentalist) Matthew is getting ready for his third Winterfest! This year, Matthew is jumping into the instrumentalist section as a bassist. Outside of school, he really enjoys playing bass, and is glad for the opportunity to display his mad finger-picking skills to the entire Unquowa community. Matthew’s favorite part of Winterfest are all of the traditions that happen each year, and he can’t wait for it all to start! JACK BARBUTO (King Kale) This will be Jack’s TENTH Winterfest. At this point, he could give all of the faculty members pointers on how this thing works, but Jack is very content to be on stage and is thrilled with his role as King this year (especially since he was a Kingdom Outsider last year - now he gets to be as inside the kingdom as it gets)! Jack loves Winterfest and everything that goes into it! Outside of school, Jack can be found in front of the computer (or a video game console) or playing sports. We’d say those were pretty great pastimes for a king! ALL HAIL KING JACK! EMRE BAYAZIT (Tech Crew) This is Emre’s first ever Winterfest. While he is apprehensive having never seen Winterfest before, he is excited to see how it all comes together. He is catching on to the enthusiasm at rehearsals and is eager to learn about the technical side of putting on a show. We are very happy that Emre will be able to experience this event before leaving Unquowa. MASSIMO CACCIATORE (Instrumentalist) Who has six strings and is ready to go medieval? Massimo. This will be his third Winterfest and as a guitarist he is most looking forward to demonstrating his skills to the Unquowa community. Outside of school, Massimo enjoys playing video games, practicing on his electric guitar, and is an avid fan of classic rock. Domo arigato, Mr. Massimo. MARIANELA CARDONA (Animal Leader) This is Marianela’s eighth Winterfest! At this point, Marianela is a pro who knows how Winterfest works and loves every bit of it. She especially loves the fact that Winterfest allows everyone to perform and express themselves. Last year, Marianela was a Stick Dancer, but this year she is branch-ing out and will join Elliott Goodman as an Animal Leader. Outside of school, Marianela enjoys listening to music and singing (which fits with her general Winterfest enthusiasm) as well as painting. Let’s go, Marianela! LEGARE CHARNEY (Knight Leader 1) This is Legare’s second Winterfest, and, after getting her feet wet last year as a Royal Court Member, she is ready to take on additional chivalric responsibility as Knight Leader 1! Apart from the singing and dancing, Legare is most excited about getting to work with the younger kids in this inter-grade experience. She also loves to watch everything come together and seeing the hard work that everyone puts in. (Us too, Legare!) Outside of school, you can catch Legare riding horses, or listening to, singing, and otherwise performing hits from her favorite K-Pop band, BTS. (Maybe she can get her favorite horse to dance to “IDOL”!)

DAVID COE (Instrumental Director) David is the Upper School instrumental music instructor at Unquowa and a member of the music faculty at Fairfield University. He loves being part of the Unquowa community as everyone comes together to create this magical event. He especially looks forward to working with the amazing and talented Megan Kirk and Jennifer Kenny! HENRY COOPER (Gator #9) This is Henry’s seventh Winterfest! An old pro, he’s ready to continue his ensemble work as Gator #9 after being an excellent Stick Dancer in last year’s production. Henry is especially excited to introduce the world to his dance number in “Can’t Touch This.” (Stop! Coopertime!) Henry’s favorite part of Winterfest is the evening production and the feast afterward. Outside of school, you can (try to) catch Henry on the basketball court or taste his cooking in the kitchen. (Watch out, Chef Jess - you might have to hire another sous chef!) MERYL COOPER (Gator #5) This will be Meryl’s third Winterfest! She is familiar with how things work, and is of course looking forward to the dances the most! Last year, Meryl was a Royal Court Member, but will get her dance on this year as the illustrious Gator #5! Meryl’s favorite part of the entire Winterfest celebration is how genuinely happy and joyful everyone is. If you are looking for Meryl outside of school, look no further than her nearest friends, many of whom are performing in Winterfest with her! Go Gators (and especially #5)! JACK CUSHMAN (Instrumentalist) As a new student, this year’s Winterfest will be Jack’s first! He is excited to perform for the school in the music ensemble as a ukelele instrumentalist, and he’s also looking forward to figuring out why Winterfest seems to be such an important part of the school year for so many students. Outside of school, you can find Jack in front of a video game console playing Minecraft and Rocket League, riding his bicycle, jumping on trampolines, playing with his brother, and swimming (which he takes pretty seriously). Play on, Jack! ROWAN DILLON (Prince Porcupine) Let’s get right to the point! Rowan will be playing the part of a porcupine in his fourth Winterfest at Unquowa. He loves the fact that so many alumni come back to see Winterfest and participate in the dances at the end. Will we see Rowan at future Winterfests? We sure hope so. Football is Rowan’s passion outside of school and his favorite team, by far, is the New York Giants! TORI FAUNCE (Mom) This is Tori’s third Winterfest and she can’t wait to shine. She will have the opportunity as she performs as Mom and participates in the Candle Dance. She is excited to be a part of this tradition with her classmates as they celebrate their final Winterfest. She loves the fact that Winterfest includes the entire school, both younger and older students, and that everyone works together. Tori will continue to show off her theatrical talents as she participates in other local theater performances. KRYSTLE GARCIA (Princess Pineapple) After playing the part of the Queen last year, Krystle will remain in the royal family as she plays Princess Pineapple this year. This is Krystle’s tenth Winterfest and she is most excited that she will be able to participate in this show with her classmates, especially the traditional Candle Dance. Although Krystle is sad that this will be her last Winterfest as a performer, she is looking forward to seeing the alumni who come back to see the show. We are confident that we will see Krystle in future years too. HAILEY GEPPERT (Grammy) Hailey could not be more excited about her ninth Winterfest production. Each year you can see Hailey walking through the halls with a smile on her face as the school prepares for this production. It is literally one of her favorite part of the year. She has the “time of her life” putting all her emotions into her characters, even when she finds it challenging. Hailey also looks forward to the dances at the end of the show and how everyone participates and has so much fun. As she leaves Unquowa this year, Hailey would like to have the opportunity to act in her next school. ANNA GIACHINO (Princess Pomegranate) This will be Anna’s sixth Winterfest and she is excited about playing the role of Princess Pomegranate. The traditional songs are her favorite part about Winterfest and she is enjoying the process of practicing the Candle Dance with her friends. Outside of school Anna spends a great deal of time in the pool swimming with her team. AMANDA GIACHINO (Royal Minstrel #1) This Winterfest mark’s Amanda’s 5th Winterfest (with the caveat that she would have loved to have performed in 4th Grade, but, alas, she

suffered from a broken arm and needed to sit that one out). Outside of school, you can find Amanda swimming or playing video games. Last year, Amanda was a Star Dancer, but is ready to take on the responsibilities of the Royal Unquowa Court as Royal Minstrel #1! Amanda’s favorite part of Winterfest is the yearly singing of the 12 Days of Christmas, but this year she is also really looking forward to the confetti at the end! (No spoilers, Amanda! Come on!) DANIEL GOMES (Prince Penne) After being the head of the court in last years Winterfest, Daniel has been upgraded to a prince this year. As his fourth Winterfest dawns, Daniel is feeling that this might be their best show yet. His favorite part is that everyone has a role in the production and that, in the end, the hard work pays off. Outside of school Daniel continues to be an avid swimmer who loves to compete. ELLIOTT GOODMAN (Animal Leader) Elliott is very happy to be involved with her second Winterfest production! In her own words, she is “so excited to share it with others!” In her first performance, Elliott was a Stick Dancer, but is thrilled to be able to be an Animal Leader alongside Marianela Cardona in this year’s show - especially since they get to lead the little kids and Elliott loves doing that! A natural performer, Elliott enjoys the spotlight and embodying a character that has different emotions from her own. She says that doing this “helps me express my feelings to the audience and connect with my friends.” Outside of school, you can find Elliott on any number of stages as she hones her acting, singing, and dancing skills. Elliott is grateful for this official opportunity to bring her passion for the performing arts to the whole Unquowa community. Break a leg, Elliott! JAX HANSON (Sound Crew) This will be Jax’s sixth Winterfest! After a fine instrumentalist performance in last year’s production, Jax is moving behind the curtain as a part of the illustrious Sound Crew. Without Jax’s hard work controlling the microphones, we would be lost! Undone! Devoid of the means to enjoy the music and songs that give Winterfest its heart! Apart from his electronic work, Jax is looking forward to the traditional dances of Winterfest (as he does every year) - it’s his favorite part! Outside of school, you can find Jax catching waves with his surfboard, riding snow drifts with his snowboard, or playing with his four dogs. (Though all at the same time, right, Jax?) NOLAN HOWE (Instrumentalist) This year marks Nolan’s seventh Winterfest production. While he had a grand time as a Stick Dancer in last year’s performance, Nolan is thrilled to join the instrumental side of things this year as a guitarist. Nolan is most looking forward to the process of adding all of the Winterfest songs to his repertoire and having a chance to perform onstage. When he’s not strumming away at school, you can find Nolan on the ice. If we were to have a hockey portion in next year’s Winterfest production, Nolan would have a tough time deciding where his skills would be best put to use! WILLIAM JACOBS (Tech Crew) This will be Will’s third Winterfest. He is most excited this year about controlling the sound board and making sure all the actors are heard. Nothing is better than the feeling of doing a good job. William enjoys cooking outside of school, but he truly enjoys bowling competitively. We thank William for his commitment to Winterfest. ERIN JACQUES (Minstrel #5) This year’s performance will be Erin’s second Winterfest! Last year, Erin was a Stick Dancer, but this year she gets to play Minstrel #5. In her own words, Erin is “most excited for how the show will come together.” She also loves that “everybody really puts their heart into their performance” each year. Finally, Erin is “excited for all the new kids that are going to be apart of the show.” Every year, Erin looks forward to the night-time performance, especially “all the cookies after the show.” Her favorite moment overall? When she is able to see “the audiences faces when the confetti slowly falls down” at the end. Outside of school, you can find Erin making big plays out on the soccer field or the basketball court. MICHAEL JONES (Jester #2) This year marks eight Winterfests for Michael. Every year, Michael looks forward to the castle walls in the gym going up in the last few weeks before the big day. This year, though, Michael is also excited about taking on a bigger role and having the opportunity to show the audience what he’s been working so hard on with his peers. Overall, though, Michael’s favorite parts of Winterfest are the last three songs that are sung each year. When Michael isn’t preparing for Winterfest, the one place you know you can count on finding him is at tee time on his local golf course (or at one of golf competitions he participates in each year).

AIDAN KAVANAUGH (Georgie’s Father) This will be Aidan’s third Winterfest! The last two years, he has been an instrumentalist, but no more! This year, Aidan is branching out into acting and is super excited about what that entails, especially, as he says, “not just acting like the character, but being the character.” This goes hand in hand with Aidan’s new passion this year: Dungeons and Dragons, where everyone’s fun is increased exponentially when each member of the party really plays in-character. Apart from D&D, Aidan can be found playing Magic: The Gathering or can be spotted with his nose in any number of books! Have fun making your stage debut, Aidan! BOB KELLEY(Set Design) Mr. Bob is looking forward to his fourteenth Winterfest here at Unquowa. He is responsible for many of the “behind the scenes” projects and activities from set decoration with giant ladders to creating and painting props to even making it snow! Mr. Bob is always available to pitch in wherever needed to insure the show is a success. DEVIN KELLY (Instrumentalist) Despite being in his second year at Unquowa, Devin joined halfway through the year and thus missed last year’s Winterfest (A TRAGEDY)! Devin is ready to change all that this year, and is excited to be an instrumentalist in his first ever Winterfest production! He is most looking forward to seeing what it’s all about and the sense of community that comes from the whole school being present for the occasion. When he’s not jamming out, you can find Devin playing any number of sports, even though he is partial to baseball, soccer, table tennis, and (regular) tennis. JENNIFER KENNY (Theatrical Director) This is Jennifer’s first Winterfest, and she’s having a wonderful time working with the Unquowa community on this exciting production! Jennifer teaches drama at Unquowa and is also the Owner and Executive Director of Fairfield Performing Arts Studio (FPAS). FPAS was established in 2008. Jennifer is the primary instructor and director for all studio classes, camps, and performances. Jennifer was trained at Circle in the Square Theater School in New York City and received a BFA in theater from the University of Connecticut. Jennifer has a strong passion for inspiring students of all ages, connecting with people, and bringing out the many dimensions of a character within an actor. Jennifer’s love and passion of people and of the performing arts is what motivates her to teach the students at Unquowa! LUKAS KERAS (Jester/Instrumentalist) This will be Lukas’s second Winterfest. Last year, Lukas was a Stick Dancer, but this year he is leaf-ing that role behind and taking on the dual roles of Jester and instrumentalist. He is most looking forward to having a bigger role and also getting to perform in front of people, which is something he really likes to do. In case you haven’t seen him folding paper around the school or catching butterflies and dragonflies at recess, Lukas is both an avid origamist (someone who practices origami) and a budding entomologist (someone who loves to catch and raise insects). Lukas is certainly a man of many interests! MEGAN KIRK (Musical Director/Choreographer) Megan is so proud of this year’s Winterfest! This is one of Megan’s favorite times of the year! In addition to teaching all grades, PK4 through 8th grade, music and movement at Unquowa, she also directs the Unquowa School Chorus and Junior Chorus. She is so thrilled to see all of her students show their talents and skills they have been working on in class this year. Winterfest holds such a special place in Megan’s heart as it brings the whole Unquowa community together, celebrating each and every student. When she isn’t teaching, singing, or dancing, Megan loves to spend time running and just ran her first Marathon this year! She would like to thank all of the students, faculty, staff, parents, and especially the Performing Arts Team for making this show a huge success. ROBERT KRUEGER (Uncle Henry) This will be Robert’s third Winterfest production! After a stint as a Stick Dancer last year, he is looking forward to his new role as Uncle Henry in this year’s performance. Robert is most looking forward to the feast after Winterfest, but is also excited to rehearse with his classmates and perform for the school and all of the parents. Off the stage, Robert is an enormous sports enthusiast and spends most of his free time playing (or watching) hockey, soccer, and football. When he isn’t on the field, you can find him playing video games, eating, and spending quality time with his family.

ROY KRUEGER (Pop) Roy will be participating in his third Winterfest performance this year. His strongest desire this year is to have his final Winterfest performance be his best. Last year’s parts as the puppet master and royal court member certainly wet his appetite -

for acting and he looks forward to performing the same traditional songs this year with the addition of the Candle Dance. Outside of school it seems like Roy will play any sport he can including hockey, rugby and basketball. CHRISTOPHER LAWRENCE (Instrumental Ensemble) This is Chris’s third Winterfest experience, and as we learned from his eighth-grade speech, Chris is an avid music fan, especially rock. He is again looking forward to playing the guitar with his friends in the ensemble. His favorite part of Winterfest this year is the fact that each of the productions he has participated in seems to be more creative than the last. DEBBIE LEIDLEIN (Tech Crew/Gatorbill Biographer) When December rolls around and the excitement for Winterfest begins to build, Unquowa turns into a truly magical place. This will be Debbies’s eighteenth Winterfest and she has seen the celebration evolve throughout the years, but one thing always remains the same - the fact that Winterfest is truly a magical event! It is all inclusive and celebrates everyone’s talents. Debbie can’t wait for Winterfest nineteen, twenty, twenty-one... EDEN LEWIS (Instrumental Ensemble) Eden will be participating in her second Winterfest production. As an instrumentalist, she enjoys entertaining the audience. An accomplished instrumentalist isn’t Eden’s only talent; she is also an avid dog owner/handler who travels many weekends to show her pugs in dog shows. Don’t mess with Eden as she takes selfdefense classes and rows crew outside of school. IVY LEWIS (Gator #4) This is Ivy’s second Winterfest, and she is incredibly excited to perform for everyone! After a stint as a Stick Dancer last year, Ivy is stepping into the singing and dancing spotlight as Gator #4. Her favorite part of Winterfest is that everyone gets a chance to be a part of the performance, and she also loves that the big production happens at night. When she isn’t getting ready for her Winterfest role, Ivy loves to sing and dance, and to play with her dog outside. NATE LEWIS (Prince Pringle) As a brand new member of the Unquowa community, this will be Nate’s first ever Winterfest! He is excited to see how everything comes together to create this huge performance, especially since he loves acting so much. Nate enjoys acting because it allows you to, in his words, “express your feelings.” When he isn’t gracing the stage (and us all!) with his presence, you can find Nate playing basketball, soccer, and tennis (though probably not all at the same time). (Hey! Wait! That’s actually a great idea for a oneman play! Who do we talk to to make this happen!?) MAGGIE LOOBY (Princess Pattycake) Although Maggie has been at Unquowa for two and-a-half years, this is her second Winterfest. The part of Winterfest Maggie is most looking forward to is seeing the costumes that all the actors will wear. She also loves the fact that she gets to sing and dance in the show as well as seeing the set. She really just loves it all. It should be no surprise that outside of school Maggie loves singing and dancing, specifically Beach Bunny. DANIELA LUJAN (Knight #2) After playing the part of a royal court member in last years Winterfest, Daniela will play the part of Knight #2 in her second Winterfest performance. Daniela’s favorite part of Winterfest is when the performance goes off flawlessly (at least as the audience is aware) and you have the amazing feeling at the end of the show. Outside of school Daniela enjoys sports and crafts. PHOEBE MCCANCE (Auntie Anne) Phoebe is looking forward to her eighth Winterfest production playing the part of Auntie Anne. Last year she did an amazing job as a royal court member and an auditioner, setting the stage for her role this year. Phoebe loves the fact that, even though the story and theme change each year, the traditions and feelings around Winterfest stay the same. She especially loves when alumni come out from the audience to participate in the dances at the end of the show. For a girl who loves performing, especially with her friends, Winterfest is a favorite time of year for Phoebe. LLOYD MITCHELL (Tech Crew Director) Mr. Mitchell is thrilled to direct his twelfth tech crew. This is his thirteenth Winterfest. Mr. Mitchell has worked on many productions both on stage as an actor and behind the scenes in a variety of roles including sound, light and stage direction. He loves orchestrating the surprises of Winterfest each year! He is looking forward to this year’s production and another flawless performance in Tech Crew’s new production booth!

MADISON MITCHELL (Royal Minstrel #2) As Madison begins her ninth Winterfest, she is excited about graduating from the stick dance to a speaking part in the show. She is so excited about having lines in this years production. In addition to her own part, Madison’s other favorite part is being able to watch her younger brother, Cameron, as he experiences all the same traditions she did. Outside of school Madison loves to bake, draw and ride her bike. It’s nice to know that this will be a family tradition for years to come. MAX OBERHAND (Instrumentalist) This will be Max’s second Winterfest. He is excited about performing as an instrumentalist and looks forward to entertaining the audience throughout the show. Max is appreciative of the fact that nobody is left out of Winterfest. Check out Max’s shoes during the show as that is a part of his attire that he prides himself on and he has a great shoe collection. This must come in handy as he is an avid soccer and basketball player. VINCENT O’HARA (Gatorbill (Auto)Biographer) This is Mr. O’Hara’s fourth Winterfest, and as a humble servant of the Unquowa Performing Arts Department, he believes this Gatorbill is flawless. He loves this time of year and the excitement that builds as the students prepare for the big show. It is a special event, and he is looking forward to it, especially seeing his daughter, Lily, participate with her PreK-4 classmates! DYLAN PHILLIPS (Instrumentalist) This will be Dylan’s very first Winterfest, and boy is he in for a treat. He is very excited to watch his friends, whether they are performing in the show or working on Tech Crew, “sing their hearts out!” He can’t wait to see the finished product and how it all comes together in the end. Dylan has many interests outside of school, but mostly he just loves to laugh! KRISSY PONDEN (Banner, Art, Candle Dance Choreographer) This is Mrs. Ponden’s twenty-second Winterfest and her fifteenth behind the scenes. She loves working with students to create the decorations for the castle and choreographing the Candle Dance. Mrs. Ponden especially enjoys watching the crowd’s reaction when the new annual eighth grade banner she has made is revealed! ALEXANDER RENZULLI (Georgie) This year’s performance will be Alex’s fourth Winterfest, and he couldn’t be more excited. Alex will be playing Georgie this year, and he is looking forward to having lots of lines to memorize and deliver, and solos to belt out. When Alex isn’t performing for the masses, he enjoys a number of extra-curricular activities including singing, playing the piano and the ukulele, cartooning, drawing, making art, and sometimes skateboarding. (We’re not sure why skateboarding is only a sometimes hobby, but he’s got plenty of others to go around!) Alex’s favorite part of Winterfest is always the audience. In his words, he loves the “thrill of everyone listening to your performance” and when “the audience gives the right reaction to what just happened. It feels really good.” It feels really good, indeed, Alex, and we hope you have LOTS of those moments this year! ALYSSA ROBERSON (Gator #6) Alyssa will be playing the part of Gator #6 in her third Winterfest. She loves the fact that she will be able to dance and sing, particularly the song “Hey Look Mom, I Made It.” As the gym transforms into a castle, Alyssa’s enthusiasm builds until the day of the big show. CLAIRE ROBERTS (Tech Crew) As Claire prepares for her seventh Winterfest, she takes special pride in the lights part of lights, sound, action. Claire is a wiz at running the light board and can not wait to see the new lights that will be used in this years show. She loves the excitement that exudes from everyone as the big day draws near. Outside of school Claire loves to dance, which will come in handy as she will be participating in this years Candle Dance! HALEY ROBERTS (Knight Guard) Haley is excited to be a part of this year’s Winterfest, which will be her third. A natural theatrical talent, Haley was a royal court member last year, but is looking forward to her increased role as the Night Guard this year. She loves getting into character when performing and also enjoys the fact that the whole school works together to put on the show. As Haley put it, “I love to do art outside of school and inside of school.” CAMERON ROSS-MACCORMACK (Set Design) For each of his nine years Mr. RossMacCormack has eagerly anticipated the joy and spectacle of Unquowa’s community celebration of Winterfest. With his palette and brushes primed and poised, his eyes are a’glow at the sight of a blank set. Visions of happy little trees are dancing in his head. -

Whimsy and magic are his muses. Mr. Ross-MacCormack hopes that everyone has a great time and can perform comfortably as their best selves. LUCA SCARPATI (Tech Crew/Instrumentalist) This is Luca’s third and final Winterfest. He is excited to be a part of the tech crew for the first time and his work with the lights and sound during other events will certainly help. Luca is excited to light the stage, but he is real passion is music; he plays jazz piano, electric bass and drums. Winterfest is special to Luca because the gym, where he loves to play basketball, transforms into one large stage and each grade in the school carries on the tradition with their part in the show. Luca is sad this will be his final Winterfest performance. KARLEIGH SCHMIDT (Queen Quinoa) All hail, the Queen! With a decade of Winterfest experience, it is only fitting that Karleigh be in control of the Royal Court. Her favorite part of the show is the end because she enjoys the traditional dances and the dessert. Outside of school Karleigh likes to dance and sing, make jewelry, and hangout with friends. What’s scarier than Karleigh with absolute power? The movies she watches! Just kidding, my Queen. It has been a horror to serve you. EZRA SCHWARTZ (Instrumentalist) This is Ezra’s third Winterfest and he is thrilled to have graduated from a stick dancer to an instrumentalist. He loves to watch as he and his classmates all work together to put on an amazing show and he loves to see the end product when all the rehearsals are finally over. And of course, Ezra loves the confetti at the end and all the fun that brings. He’s even hoping it will snow outside, just to set the right mood for the show. In addition to playing the guitar Ezra enjoys wrestling and fishing outside of school. HENRY SCHWARTZ (Instrumentalist) While this is Henry’s first Winterfest in which he will perform, he has had the opportunity to watch Winterfest from the audience as his sister performed. In his words, “Winterfest is a good last note before our winter break.” I’m sure Henry will like being a part of the action this year and joining his sister in the show. LEXIE SCHWARTZ (Tech Crew) Lexie will continue her tradition of being a part of the Tech Crew in her sixth Winterfest. She is, of course, excited for the traditional Candle Dance she will perform with her classmates, but even more she is excited about designing the banner that will be revealed at Winterfest and will commemorate her class for years to come. She can’t wait to see the recent alumni and to catch up on what everyone has been doing. To her, that is the best part about Winterfest. ZOE SCHWARTZ (Charlotte) This is Zoe’s very first Winterfest and boy, is she in for a treat. Although she has watched brother Ezra perform at Winterfest in the past, this will be Zoe’s first time to be a part of the action. She loves to perform, but the fact that she will be able to perform with her friends makes this opportunity even more special. She has been involved in theatrical productions in the past and loves to dance outside of school, so we are fortunate to have her as part of our cast this year. MICHAEL SCOTTO (Royal Minstrel #3) This year marks Michael’s second Winterfest. In last year’s production, Michael and his classmates were Stick Dancers, but this year he is switching things up as Royal Minstrel #3! Michael’s favorite part of Winterfest is that it is an event where everyone participates, and, especially, an event where everyone is important. This year, Michael is most looking forward to the new theme: _______________________. (Just kidding - do you think we’d spoil that before the show?) When he isn’t on stage, Michael loves playing soccer, watching soccer, talking about soccer, living and breathing and sleeping (and eating?) soccer. (If you can’t tell, he’s a bit of a soccer enthusiast.) ERIC SNOW (Gatorbill Biographer) This is Mr. Snow’s first year at Unquowa, which means it’s his first ever everything, including Winterfest! The powers that be somehow deemed it a reasonable job for one of the newest faculty members to write Gatorbill bios despite not knowing anything about Winterbills or Gatorfests or Wintergators or … yeah. (Those are all DEFINITELY real things.) Even so, Mr. Snow’s last name gives him a tremendous amount of insight into all things Winter-related, so we suppose it’ll have to do. Listen for him laughing uproariously at every opportunity. We promise - you can’t miss it. (Even if you try.) AVERY SPELLER (Royal Minstrel #4) This will be Winterfest #1 for Avery, and boy is she in for a surprise. She has quickly developed a liking for the rehearsals and is especially enjoying learning the songs. She can’t wait to see the whole show come together and to be a part of the action. Outside of school Avery likes cooking and baking and decorating just

about anything. I’m sure we will see some artwork of Avery’s as part of Winterfest in the years to come. ISABELLE SPENCER (Tech Crew) Isabelle will spend her final Winterfest behind the scenes as part of our Tech Crew, a role she loves and is especially good at. Isabelle will lead this group with her attention to detail and her quick thinking. It is only fitting that she will light the stage in her final Winterfest. Isabelle’s favorite part of Winterfest is the traditional dances and songs at the end together, especially “The Twelve Days of Christmas!” TRAVIS STUART (Tech Crew/Candle Dancer) After being the reigning king last year, this year, his eighth and final Winterfest, Travis will helping to light the stage and make sure every actor is heard as a member of the Tech Crew. In past years, he worked on the tech crew and his return to this part of the production is very exciting as he knows the equipment well. Travis continues to love how the gym magically transforms into a castle and and how all students work together to make the show a success. Travis is most looking forward to the traditional dances with the current students and alumni at the end of the show. RYLEY TATE-PADIAN (Queen Quiche) For a decade, Ryley has been participating in Unquowa’s greatest tradition: Winterfest! Wow! It is only fitting that she be appointed Queen. In the show, Ryley enjoys transforming into someone else for a change, and while Ryley is an excellent student, she doesn’t mind missing class for rehearsals. Most of all she truly loves Winterfest “because everyone comes together to put on the production.” Beyond Unquowa, Ryley loves to play sports, such as soccer, running, and basketball, but most of all she enjoys hanging out with family and friends and creating memories. CLEMENTINE THOMSON (Gator #2) This year marks Clem’s second Winterfest, and she is super excited to be cast as Gator #2. As much fun as being a Stick Dancer was last year, there’s nothing like being able to have a singing, dancing, and acting role! In addition to the singing, dancing, and acting, Clem is most looking forward to the decorations and costumes that many teachers, parents, and students work so hard on. When she isn’t prepping for Winterfest, Clem is an avid illustrator and chef. OWEN TOLAN (Tech Crew) This will be Owen’s fourth Winterfest. In last year’s production, he provided the music as an instrumentalist, but this year he is excited to be behind the scenes as a member of the Tech Crew. Owen loves cats and reading history, and therefore will be incorporating his knowledge into his role backstage, moving with the feline stealth of an Edo-era ninja- neither seen nor heard. His favorite part of Winterfest is the finale because the traditional songs and dances at the end of the show make him feel at home. Outside of school, Owen loves to hike, draw, and play video games. JULIA VAN DER AUE (Instrumentalist) This is Julia’s fifth Winterfest! Last year, along with her classmates, Julia was a Stick Dancer, but she’s opted for a musical role this year and is excited to play the flute for the production! Because she doesn’t particularly enjoy acting, Julia is very happy to be a part of the show as an ensemble musician, and we all are very glad to have her on the flute! Her favorite part of Winterfest is best said in her own words: “I like seeing all the banners hung up on the ceilings, and of course, confetti stick didgeridoos!” When she isn’t playing the flute or preparing for Winterfest, Julia loves arts and crafts (especially origami and anything squid-related), and she is a huge fan of Dungeons and Dragons. SOPHIA VASH (Gator #3) This will be Sophia’s ninth Winterfest! Sophia is excited to be Gator #3 this year because, even though the dance is a little difficult, she’s pretty sure it’s the best one in the whole show. That said, her favorite part of the production year in and year out continues to be the traditional dances at the end of the show. This year, she is especially looking forward, in her words, to “collecting confetti sticks at the end and using them as didgeridoos!” When she isn’t involved with Winterfest, you can find Sophia reading, writing (a LOT!), playing Dungeons and Dragons on Wednesdays at Unquowa with her friends, and playing sports. SABINE WADADLI (Lighting Manager) And Sabine said, “Let there be light!” and there was light. In her ninth production, Sabine will be behind the scenes again as one of the creators of the Winterfest universe: Lord Mitchell’s Tech Crew. She is most excited to see all the little kids perform, which makes her think of herself when she was their age. The younger kids always make her smile to see how much fun they’re having. The Wednesday run-through is the highlight of Winterfest for Sabine because she loves seeing the show come

together. Beyond Unquowa, Sabine is an avid Equestrian who also enjoys playing soccer and spending time with family and friends. Lights up! MADELINE WERNER (Gator #7) This will be Madeline’s third Winterfest, and she is thrilled to be part of the show once again. Getting lost in her character is one of her favorite aspects of acting in the productions. When she is not memorizing lines, Madeline enjoys arts and crafts, reading, and running. When asked what she would like to add to her Gatorbill Biography, she responded candidly, “There is nothing else I would like to add.” If brevity is the soul of wit, then keep an eye out for Gator #7. She’s a smart one, alright. Why am I rambling? Oh, no! What does this say about me as a writer?! BRYAN WILSON JR. (Instrumentalist) This will be Bryan’s second Winterfest! He is excited to… branch out from his role as a Stick Dancer last year and take on the rhythmic responsibilities of a guitarist. Bryan’s favorite part of the show is everyone’s acting, and he also loves spending time with his friends and having a chance to show the audience his performance skills. Outside of school, you can find Bryan playing sports (especially basketball and lacrosse) and enjoying the occasional video game. Rock on, Bryan! MIKEY WINKLER (Royal Announcer #1) As a new student, this will be Mikey’s very first Winterfest, and he is super excited about it! During rehearsals, he likes that he is becoming more and more comfortable with acting the more he practices, and he’s ready to embrace his role as Royal Announcer #1. When he isn’t on stage, Mikey really loves playing video games with his brother and reading lots of books. We hope your first experience with Winterfest is great, Mikey! PRESTON WONG (Tech Crew) Preston will spend this Winterfest behind the scenes as a member of the Tech Crew. He is excited to support the cast of characters this year and understands the importance of that role. Preston played the cello last year, a talent that has been well showcased at Unquowa over the past two years. We appreciate all of Preston’s talents. JASON YANG (Soloist) Jason is what is known as a triple threat: actor, musician, and stunt man in major motion pictures. Ok, he’s a double threat (we’ll let you decide). With this being his third year at Unquowa, Jason knows what to expect. He is vigorously preparing for his musical performances with a hint of bittersweet awareness that this will be his final Winterfest, and he wishes Unquowa continued through high school so he could participate in more. Outside of school, Jason loves to play piano and basketball and attends crew sessions at Saugatuck Rowing. While he does have experience as the bow and the stroke position, Jason does not have a preference. It is an either oar situation. BEA ZORUB (Baby Gator) Look out, this is Bea’s second Winterfest, and while she is playing Baby Gator, she isn’t the new hatchling on the bayou anymore! Last year’s production was Bea’s first foray into acting, and now she is hooked. Her favorite part of Winterfest is the dancing; she loves the costumes and all the songs the teachers chose this year, especially “Sing,” “Hey, Look Ma I Made It,” and “Can’t Touch This.” Beyond the stage, Bea enjoys playing tennis, but it is tough to get a lot on her backhand with these short Baby Gator arms.
