Winchester is centrally located in Hampshire in the South of England. Our beautiful campus is just a 10-15 minute walk from the heart of the city centre, so it’s easy to get to your lectures without paying for transport.
London, Southampton, Portsmouth, Bournemouth and Oxford are all easy to get to, and direct train lines stretch to Coventry, Birmingham and Manchester. Reach Southampton Airport in just 10 minutes via train and you can travel to both Gatwick and Heathrow airports within 90 minutes.
We currently help our students save an average of around 30% on South Western Railway season tickets. We have secured some great deals with local bus companies to ensure you have discounted travel, and Winchester benefits from an excellent Park and Ride Scheme. I love the beauty of Winchester. There are so many hidden sights and walks around the city.
Katie, graduate

You can walk from campus to Winchester city centre in three songs flat. No need for a 30-minute bus ride or jumping in a taxi.
Winchester is a small city with a big personality. Not only are you spoilt for choice of where to eat, drink and socialise, you will be in Britain’s best city for job and work opportunities (SME Today, 2025). Whether you want to earn money whilst you study or have a range of employment options when you graduate, Winchester is a brilliant footing.
The city offers you moments — unexpected, unforgettable and yours to discover. Winchester is more than a backdrop, it’s where your university story comes to life.

Whether you want to dance the night away, form a pub quiz team, or support a friend at their first gig, Winchester has you covered.
Enjoy a drink at one of the oldest pubs in England, The Royal Oak, or experience the wonder of Incognito, where your cocktail is rarely served in a glass. Our music scene hits the right notes with vinyl-only DJ sets at Overdraft, silent discos in Winchester Cathedral and live music from new acts in venues across the city, including The Railway Inn. If you fancy ending the night dancing, Alfie’s, O’Neill’s and The Broadway are popular choices.
Film lovers should head to the Everyman Cinema, housed within a former chapel, to enjoy the latest films or classics. For live comedy or shows, Winchester Theatre Royal, The Arc, The Nutshell or Chesil Theatre are the venues to keep an eye on.

From on-the-go street food to an extravagant graduation meal, there is something for every craving and every budget in Winchester. Our favourites include New York pizza slices at 5 Boroughs; handmade sushi at Bento Factory; Malaysian street food at Lucky Lychee; toasties at The Handlebar Café; and the pies at Piecaramba.
Food is taken so seriously in the city that despite having the usual favourite chains and independents, there is still a rolling stream of food markets, pop-ups and festivals.

Winchester is on the edge of the South Downs National Park if you wish to walk or cycle one of the many trails on offer through the rolling countryside.
Take a study break and unwind with a relaxing walk along the water meadows, which weaves its way through the city centre and ends at Winnall Moors Nature Reserve. If you’re feeling fit, climb St Catherine’s Hill or St Giles Hill for impressive views across the city. Or, for something a bit different, try paddleboarding along the River Itchen.
Not only are we surrounded by nature, but Winchester City Council was named the top performing district council in the UK for their work on tackling the climate crisis (Climate Emergency UK, 2025).
Once the ancient capital of England, Code, Wolf Hall and The Last Kingdom, to

Boomtown Festival (a couple of miles outside the city) or Victorious Festival (45 minutes away) are hugely popular. You can also watch spectacular outdoor performances across Winchester as part of the summer Hat Fair, and enjoy a range of festivals from food to jazz, comedy to film, throughout the year.
If shopping is more your thing, a mix of well-known chains and unique independent shops will keep you busy, as well as the regular vibrant street market full of one-of-a-kind vintage finds.

Winchester is centrally located in the South of England. London, Southampton, Portsmouth, Bournemouth and Oxford are all easy to get to, and direct train lines stretch to Coventry, Birmingham and Manchester. Not only is that great for a weekend trip or heading home, it also opens up a wider world of potential work placements and professional opportunities for you.
Enjoy day trips just outside the city to Marwell Zoo or Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium. You can also head to the beach with flatmates in less than an hour.
Make the most of the next few years as part of our friendly, supportive community. Create unforgettable memories as you embrace everything our incredible campus has to offer.
We’ve got you covered from study to social –from impressive teaching and learning facilities, specialist equipment, libraries and study spaces to hangout spots, reflection spaces and activity hubs. It’s only a short 10-minute walk between the King Alfred Quarter and West Downs Quarter – so you’ll be out of bed and into your seminar in no time at all.

Our most recent project is the £5.8m refurbishment of our Martial Rose Library. Like our West Downs Library, it is open 24/7, which is perfect whether you are an early riser, daytime studier or an all-nighter.
If over 100,000 books weren’t enough, there’s also a range of collaborative study spaces; reset rooms to help you unwind; a chillout space with sofas and games; and professional areas including a mock classroom for teachers and a Makers’ Space with 3D printer and programmable mini-robots.

Here’s a snapshot of what life on campus is like . . .

The main benefit of being a commuting student is definitely the fact that you have the safety blanket of being at home. Additionally, the Commuting Students Network is such a positive aspect and a huge benefit because you have your own Commuter Lounge and you can really get a real sense of community from all the other members.
One thing that I wish I heard before being a commuting student is just knowing that the commuting experience, although it’s different to those who live in accommodation, there’s still a sense of community. You can still engage in activity groups, you can still get involved in all the fun stuff, [and] make friends.

A Degree Apprenticeship is a particular type of job which combines work with training and study, so you earn while you learn.
You will earn a wage, gain valuable skills and experience, put what you learn into practice and graduate with an undergraduate Honours degree.
In general, as an apprentice, you will spend most of your week at work but you also spend at least 20 per cent of your time in off-the-job study or training.
There are many benefits to studying a Degree Apprenticeship. Not only are you in employment earning a wage, there are no tuition fees as these are paid by your employer and/or the Government. You will be studying a subject which relates directly to your job role and
gaining valuable experience which should help progress your career. Additionally, you have access to all the benefits of being a student at the University of Winchester – membership of Winchester Students’ Union, access to our Student Support and Success teams, sports facilities and our 24/7 libraries, to name just a few.
Already employed? Our apprenticeship programmes are aimed not only at those who are looking to begin a new career, but also at existing employees wanting to develop their skills and capabilities, with the support of their employer.

You can expect to learn everything that an ordinary studentwould, butyou get the support from yourworkplace alongside that. Most of all I think I’ve enjoyed the skills aspect of it and all the facilities that we have at Winchester.
