YOUR ACADEMiC JOURNEY

This section is designed to guide you through key aspects of your academic path, from preparing for your viva and understanding the vital role of your supervisor, to exploring various funding options available to support your studies.

The Viva

The viva voce is an oral examination where you will defend your thesis in front of a panel of examiners

Your final thesis exam (viva) is normally due at the end of three years for a fulltime student and six years for a part-time student. Students and supervisors will complete and submit form J approximately four months before the viva date. The director of studies is responsible for liaising with the examiners and student to set a date and time for the exam. The thesis submission will be due at least eight working weeks before the viva date.

All PGR students should be provided with general information about what to expect during the viva in order to prepare for them (i.e. an overview of the process, who will be there, how long it might last, what the format is likely to be, etc.). This is likely to be provided by supervisors or by the wider PGR team at departmental or faculty level, each of whom will be important contacts throughout your PGR journey.

Role of Your Supervisor

1. Guidance & Feedback:

Your supervisor will provide expert advice on your research topic, helping you to refine and develop your research. They will review your work regularly, and offer constructive feedback to help improve the quality and rigor of your research.

2. Mentor:

Your supervisor can support your professional growth by advising on academic and non-academic matters, including career opportunities, and advice on how to build a strong professional network.

3. Monitor:

They will participate in the evaluation of your progress, providing assessments and recommendations to ensure you meet the requirements of your program.

4. Support:

Your supervisor is there to offer support and encouragement, helping you navigate the ups and downs of your research journey. They can help you access necessary resources, such as funding opportunities, research facilities, and relevant academic literature.

BUiLDiNG A STRONG RELATiONSHiP WiTH YOUR SUPERViSOR:

Building a strong relationship with your supervisor is essential for a successful research journey. It is highly recommended to build a positive, working relationship with your Supervisor by maintaining regular and open communication, coming prepared to meetings with relevant updates on your work, bringing specific questions, and any issues you may need help with, and lastly, respecting your supervisor's time and expertise.

Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSAs) are a non-means tested support fund, aimed at providing students with needs access to specialist support. A DSA can also help to cover added costs a student may incur because of their support needs, such as travel support and printing and ink costs. More information can be found on the University intranet (search ‘Disabled Students’ Allowances’)

The University also offers several bursaries for postgraduate students, including the Postgraduate Access Scholarship Scheme which aims to reach out to groups not traditionally represented in Higher Education to support them in overcoming disadvantage and promoting equality, social justice and social mobility More information can be found on the University website (search ‘postgraduate awards’)

More broadly, the government offers the Doctoral Loan, which you can find out more at https://www.gov.uk/doctoral-loan.

THE STUDENTS’ UNiON

HOW YOU’RE REPRESENTED

Experience Survey

The Postgraduate Research Experience Survey is conducted annually by Advance HE and provides higher education institutions with the opportunity to fully understand the experience of postgraduate researchers, both at their institution and in comparison with other similar providers In 2024, more than 12,000 students responded from over 60 institutions in the UK and Australia.

It’s incredibly important for PGR students to complete the survey and have their say in their education. Keep an eye out for communications around this survey and be prepared to share your thoughts!

SUggestions

SUggestions is a way for students to submit their ideas, have their fellow students vote on it, and then potentially have their idea taken to our Executive Committee. Want a PGR peer-to-peer support group? Want more provisions for PGR students? Submit your idea at https://www.winchesterstudents.co.uk/suggestions

Your Executive Committee

The Students’ Union is led by a team of elected officers, who represent your needs and interests.
