A MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF by Chief Donald Bergmann You may have noticed; University Police have made subtle changes in our appearance. In an effort to change with the times, University Police have opted for a more practical and tactical approach to the police uniform. In the spirit of combining the classic look with modern capabilities, University police are now wearing their ballistic body armor in an outer carrier and their equipment on the carrier rather than the duty belt. Research has determined that load-bearing vests are a safe and healthier alternative to the traditional duty belt. This is a departure from the traditional police uniform, and contrary to the powerful traditions within law enforcement. Although there are still appearance guidelines, University Officers are also permitted to have beards and visible tattoos. Our goal is to allow officers to maintain a professional appearance, be tactically equipped and keep up with the evolving requirements of the profession.
