Northern New South Wales enjoys a mild, year round climate with highs around 30 degrees celcius in summer (December to February) and 20 degrees in winter (June to August). Overnight temperatures get as low as around 10 degrees in winter. Our wettest month is typically February with a subtropical wet season rainfall. SEASONALITY

Visitor seasons are aligned with major national holiday periods, sunny weather and school semester breaks. FLOWING TO THE SEA AND WEAVING ITS WAY INLAND BESIDE TOWNS BOTH PEACEFUL AND VIBRANT, THE MIGHTY TWEED RIVER IS A STUNNING WATERWAY INVITING EXPLORATION AT EVERY TWIST AND TURN IT TAKES. Where better to start your journey from coast to country than along the expansive stretch of the Tweed River, as it flows to a small ocean inlet at Tweed Heads, between Duranbah Beach and the northern tip of Fingal Head, crosses paths with the Rous and Oxley Rivers, and curves its way through the green towns of the valley and beyond. Stretch out, breathe in and feel invigorated by a little river exploration at your own pace, from bustling Tweed Heads to peaceful Tumbulgum and onwards to Murwillumbah.

ASK A LOCAL Christine Manfield — Chef and Savour The Tweed Ambassador Moving to The Tweed in early 2020 with my partner Margie, we relocated from Sydney’s inner city urban density, swapping it to a more relaxed lifestyle by the beach, but with close access to an airport for our continuing regular travels. We felt we had the advantage, the best of both worlds. We chose this area because we used to come and stay at Halcyon House at Cabarita Beach and loved the area. Knowing a solid and expanding bunch of forward thinking farmers, chefs and artisan producers lived here helped clinch the deal, I wanted that immediate connection to like-minded people and with agritourism activists. EXPLORE: When friends come to stay, I like to give them a snapshot of what The Tweed has to offer, with visits to the Tweed Regional Museum, the Tweed Regional Art Gallery & the M|Arts Precinct (all in Murwillumbah). A beach walk is mandatory and whale watching when it’s the season. There are also a few bush walks that aren’t too arduous to choose from - the Pottsville Eucalyptus track, Norries Head loop, Fingal Causeway and Dreamtime Beach and the Ukerebagh walk (starting at the Minjungbal Aboriginal Museum). SIP: I often drop into No 35 Kitchen & Bar in Cabarita for their happy hour sessions (5-6pm Wed-Fri) for a late afternoon aperitivo (usually a Paloma) and a couple of their snack plates, it’s a great place to meet with friends and has a wonderfully laid back beachside vibe. EAT: We’re spoilt to have Bistro Livi so close by, love its sophisticated ambience, considered food, outstanding wines and knowledgeable service, it’s the ultimate neighbourhood restaurant and sets the bar in The Tweed region. For something low key and casual, I head to Dayo Cafe in Tweed Heads for brunch, with a chilled riverside location and a clever play on Filipino flavours, I go for their Lao Gan eggs, garlic labneh and crispy chilli oil, plus the teriyaki mushroom rice bowl. SHOP: Being in The Tweed is all about celebrating its food community and appreciating what’s close at hand and supporting small scale businesses that punch above their weight. My food shopping centres around regular visits to Kat Harvey Cheese and the Wednesday farmers market in Murwillumbah, Rob Roy Deli & Drinks for wines and snacks, Bread Social for sourdough and pastries (both in Tweed Heads) and I get my farm eggs and handmade Japanese condiments from Michelle at Raven Place Farm (Clothiers Creek), and sneak in a cheeky plate of gyoza while I’m there. DO: I get my day started with a bike ride to Movement Health & Fitness at Casuarina Recreation Club for my morning yoga and pilates reformer classes, gets the endorphins going and great for connecting with our local community. Having the beach at our front doorstep is a bonus and means it’s never an effort to take a beach walk, and an ocean swim when the weather is warm.

Tweed Heads

THE REGION’S NAMESAKE IS AN IDEAL COMBINATION OF FISHING AND RIVER CRUISING, WORLD-FAMOUS WAVES AND AN EVOLVING FOODIE SCENE. Duranbah Beach may be less than 200 metres in length, but the break-wall of the Tweed River at the southern end forms a nice right-hand wave, loved by surfers from all over. If you’re staying out of the water, head to Point Danger, a natural amphitheatre that invites holidaygoers to take in sweeping vistas. Heading in from the coast, the stunning Tweed River plays host to peaceful cruise tour opportunities, or you can hire a boat to track your own river path.

Throw in a line for bream, flathead or mulloway (note there is a recreational fishing fee in NSW). Tweed Heads is fast becoming a go-to neighbourhood with hip cafes, trendy boutiques, local bakeries, well-stocked delis, artisan drinks to go and even a retro-record store, all in and around Bay Street. Don’t miss the regular local markets and all access playground, Livvi’s Place at Goorimahbah – Place of Stories at Jack Evans Boat Harbour.

AS THE LONG, STRAIGHT STRETCH OF COASTLINE FROM TWEED HEADS TRACES SOUTH, FINGAL HEAD JUTS OUT TO SEA, POINTING TOWARDS NEARBY COOK ISLAND. Fingal Head is a rocky outcrop known as Giant’s Causeway, so named after the similar UNESCO Giant’s Causeway World Heritage Site in Ireland, was formed by lava flows halted by the cool ocean, resulting in rock pillars that rise like steps to a peak with views clear out to the horizon. For the local Indigenous people, Fingal Head is known as Booninybah, said to mean ‘home of the giant echidna’, with the volcanic columns resembling an echidna’s spiny covering. In tranquil Fingal, you’ll also find fun surf breaks, laid-back fishing spots, eateries and caravan and camping options close by.

Nearby Chinderah is a restful riverside getaway, just a stone’s throw from the beach and ideal for a bit of R&R for those who like to take it easy on holiday. One of only 13 aquatic reserves in New South Wales, Cook Island Aquatic Reserve is around 600 metres off shore from Fingal Head and comprises 80 hectares of protected marine area, which nurtures fish habitats and threatened species, conserves marine biodiversity and supports research and education. Formed by lava flows from a vast shield volcano over 20 million years ago, the island has both hard and soft corals, with boulders forming walls and caves descending to the sandy sea floor.

It’s thought that Cook Island, Julian Rocks near Byron Bay and the Solitary Islands further south, are a kind of ‘stepping stone’ pathway for tropical marine species moving up and down the coastline. Arguably the stars of the show are the resident green sea turtles, ever-present in and around the Cook Island Aquatic Reserve and best encountered on an organised snorkelling tour out from Fingal Head, with sightings possible all year around. The Sunday on the Lawn sessions are amazing and the outdoor casual dining is perfect for large families and small children. As a mother of a toddler, I especially appreciate how accommodating and fun this venue is. SIP: No 35 Kitchen & Bar is where we head for a sip and bite - the team, Rachel and Dan, have an incredible food and wine collaboration here. This section starts at the Murwillumbah Railway Station, the official trail head, and will eventually connect all the way through to Casino via Byron Bay, a 132km trail along the original railway line that was built in 1894. Running from Murwillumbah to Crabbes Creek, the Tweed section of the trail is 24 kilometres end-to-end and connects via the villages of Dunbible, Stokers Siding, Burringbar and Mooball. THE GIDJUUM GULGANYI WALK IS A BREATHTAKING HIKING TRAIL THAT CONNECTS THE TWEED AND BYRON HINTERLAND VIA MOUNT JERUSALEM NATIONAL PARK, NIGHTCAP NATIONAL PARK AND WHIAN WHIAN STATE CONSERVATION AREA, WITH DESIGNATED CAMPING AREAS AND SCENIC LOOKOUT SPOTS DOTTED ALONG ITS 42 KILOMETRE 3–NIGHT, 4–DAY TRACK. Meaning Old People’s Track, the walk passes through the ancient traditional lands of the Widjabul Wia-bal and Minjungbal People of the Bundjalung Nation, who have lived in the area for thousands of years. Hikers along the trail are richly rewarded with a diversity of landscapes and settings, ranging from millenia old rainforest to native blue quandongs and

stands of eucalypt trees, cool streams and creeks, stunning waterfalls and lookouts and the towering Wollumbin, all set around the expansive green caldera of an extinct shield volcano. The Gidjuum Gulganyi Walk proudly sits among the NSW Great Walks — a premier series of multi-day hikes that showcases some of the state’s most breathtaking and diverse landscapes.

The Fingal Head Lighthouse Walk is a short, scenic stroll through coastal bushland leading to ocean views, basalt columns and the historic lighthouse, with glimpses of dolphins, whales and Cook Island.

B R I N D L E C R E E K WA L K I N G T R AC K 6km return | 2 – 3 hours

The Brindle Creek Walking Track winds through World Heritage rainforest in Border Ranges National Park, with towering Antarctic Beech trees, clear creeks, lush biodiversity and stunning waterfalls including Evans and Selva Falls.

U N I CO R N FA L L S 4.2km return | 1 – 2 hours

Unicorn Falls in Mount Jerusalem National Park is a short rainforest walk leading to a magical, secluded waterfall and natural swimming hole, perfect for a refreshing dip and tranquil escape.

The Pinnacle Walk and Lookout in Border Ranges National Park winds through World Heritage rainforest to stunning vistas over the Tweed Valley, Wollumbin Mount Warning and the Pacific, with lush wildlife and serene surroundings.
