New champions crowned By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net he Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources’ second annual Best-of-theBest Regatta concluded yesterday in Montagu Bay with three new champions crowned. After four days of competition, Stefan Knowles and his Running Tide took the A class title back to Mangrove Bush, Long Island, while Jeff Gale and his Lonesome Dove and It Ain’t Right carried the B and C class titles to Abaco. Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis was on hand to participate in the closing ceremonies, commending Minister Renward Wells and his staff at the ministry for putting on another successful event. However, there was no comments made, but many felt the regatta could have been bigger and better without the controversy that loomed over the A class and the PM Thunderbird. As a result of the ministry’s decision to allow the Aliv PM New Thunderbird, formerly the banned Tanqueray, to sail, six of the top A class boats boycotted, leaving just four boats in the fleet. In the end, the Running Tide walked away with $6,000 for winning the Best of the Best title, while the New Legend got $5,500 for second in a showdown between two Long Island boats. The Good News out of Exuma finished third and earned $5,000 and the New Thunderbird and

didn’t sail, so we ended up winning all of the races,” he said. “It’s an issue that has to be sorted out in the near future. “I understand the reason why they didn’t sail, but at the end of the day, we have to come up with an amicable solution and get it worked out. It ain’t good for the sport for the sports not to participate.”

Knowles was hoping to go for the triple crown in winning all three titles, but he admitted that in the C class, his Whitty K experienced some problems in the first race, but even though they got back into it, they couldn’t catch It Ain’t Right. “We’ll get them back next time,” Knowles said.

GOODISON AND KLEEN WIN THE STAR SAILORS LEAGUE FINALS WITH racing taking place in a balmy, near perfect 15 knots on Nassau’s Montagu Bay, the ‘take no prisoners’ shoot out on the last day of the Star Sailors League Final saw the fleet narrow to seven teams after the quarter-finals and to four after the semis. Finally this left the finals being contested by France’s Xavier Rohart/Pierre-Alexis Ponsot, Britain’s Paul Goodison sailing with German Frithjof Kleen, Brazil’s Robert Scheidt/Henry Boening and the USA’s Mark Mendelblatt/ Brian Fatih, the latter crew having ‘fast tracked’ straight through after decisively winning the qualifiers on Saturday. In the final race, Mendelblatt/ Fatih led off the line and all the boats heading out to the left. On the final approach to the finish line, Scheidt/Boening closed, rolling in with more pressure and on some

good waves as Goodison/Kleen looked slow. However at the very last moment, Goodison/Kleen picked up speed to win by a metre. It was a suitable ending to this ultimate ‘champion of champions’ regatta,

where the winners get to walk away with US$ 40,000 of a US$ 200,000 total prize purse. Goodison described the final seconds. “I was desperate to soak low to come into towards the pin end [of the finish line] and Frida [Frithjof Kleen] was going ‘YOU’RE GOING TOO SLOW, YOU’RE GOING TOO SLOW – COME UP!’. So there was a little panic. It was a little too close for comfort.” Kleen added: “It is always super hard to protect yourself from Robert Scheidt because he is the best downwind sailor in the world and he caught us up quite well…” In fact the two time Moth World Champion and his burly Star veteran crewman had become experts at photo finishes having had a similar experience in the semi-finals. BUDDY Hield’s productivity off the bench continues for the Sacramento Kings and is approaching milestone numbers for his efficient shooting. Hield scored 17 points on 7-13 shooting, 3-5 from three-point range in Sunday’s 102-87 loss to the Toronto Raptors at the Golden 1 Centre in Sacramento, California. Hield scored 14 in the first half to help the Kings keep pace. It completed a weekend that began with late game heroics against his former team. Hield finished with 18 points and 7 rebounds in a 116-109 overtime win over the New Orleans Pelicans at the Smothie King Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. He shot 7-12 from the field, including 4-5 on three pointers. He scored eight points during the Kings’ 11-2 run to end the fourth and his 3-pointer with 36.3 seconds left tied the score at 102 to eventually force overtime. “It was good to come here and get a win,” Hield told reporters after the game. “We came in here with a great team -- they are in playoff contention -- and they have three great players, A.D., Jrue (Holiday), and DeMarcus and just find a way to win. Roadrunners Track & Field Club’s 18th annual gala awards banquet By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net FOR the 18th consecutive year, president/head coach Dexter Bodie and his executive team took the time out to honour the accomplishments of their Roadrunners Track and Field Club at their gala awards banquet. The massive presentation, held under the theme: ‘Climbing the Ladder of Success through Determination, Responsibility, Enthusiasm, Accountability and Dedication,’ recognised the athletes for their athletic and academic achievements for this year. In the ballroom of the Atlantis resort on Paradise Island, Olympian Iram Lewis congratulated the club for its stickability in honouring the athletes and he urged them to continue to carry out the mandate that has become the hallmark of the occasion. In his remarks, Lewis brought home the importance of the athletes climbing the ladder of success, as outlined in their theme, noting that there were many athletes such as Sir Durward ‘Sea Wolf’ Knowles in sailing, Elisha Obed in boxing, Thomas A Robinson in track and field and Mychal ‘Sweet Bells’ Thompson in basketball, who paved the way. “It didn’t just start with the ‘Golden Girls’ or the ‘Golden Knights’ or any of today’s modern athletic heroes,” he stressed. He mentioned that on their shoulders rest the future stars who will emerge out of the Roadrunners Club to become the next superstars in the future. “Continue coach Bodie and your fine executive team to work with the athletes,” stated Lewis, who predicted that the next Shaunae Miller-Uibo, Chris ‘Fireman’ Brown, Carl Oliver and even Iram Lewis is right in the Roadrunners Club. Both Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations’ president Rosamunde Carey and Bahamas Parents Association of Track and Field Athletes Harrison Petty also praised Bodie and the club for the tremendous accomplishments they have achieved with their athletes. Carey, highlighting how she participated in both a half marathon in Orlando, Florida, and a full marathon in Paris, France, encouraged the athletes to never give up. She emphasized the importance of the athletes ensuring that they put their best foot forward in getting to represent the country when the CARIFTA Games are held here during the Easter holiday. And when it’s all said and done, Petty said there’s no greater feeling for an athlete than to be able to secure an athletic scholarship and his association will continue to work with the Roadrunners and the other clubs to ensure that they get as many student/athletes off to school. Lewis, the parliamentary secretary in the Ministry of Works, and his wife were joined by fellow Olympian Carl Oliver, Carey, Petty and his wife, parent David Higgins, sponsor Phil Smith and sponsor William Delancy and his wife, in making the presentations to the athletes. Two of the top awards presented were the Athletes of the Year and the Dominique Higgins Awards for the most outstanding student-athletes. Winners of the Dominique Higgins Awards received their trophies from David Higgins, father of Dominique Higgins, who was the first athlete in the club to be recognised for their achievement of a 4.0 grade point average. This year’s recipients were Noel James, Rolando

Thompson, Leonard Taylor and Jasmine Thompson, all earning 4-0 GPAs. Phil Smith, representing d’Albenas Agency, one of the major sponsors, presented the Athletes of the Year awards. The recipients were as follows: Girls Under 8 – Takash Seymour; under-10 – J’Kaiyah Rolle; under-12 – Ta-Mia Taylor; under-14 – Sherinique Sears; under-16 – Rowlia Joseph and under18 – Esther Cartwright. Boys Under-8 – Rolando Thompson; under-12 – Darius Pratt; under-14 – Daniel Ermilus and Malcolm Williams; under-16 – Anton Pratt and Avery Adderley; under-18 – Michael Adderley and under-20 Gabriel Williams. Although she was one of the most impressive athletes this year, Ta-Mia Taylor said she was still surprised that she received the awards that she got. “I feel good and I’m very excited about the awards that I got. I think it was a great achievement for me,” said Taylor, a 10-year-old student of Pace Christian Academy, who competes in events from the 200-800 metres. “I was very surprised with all of the awards that I got.” It was no surprise for Esther Cartwright, who will be entering her final year as a high school student as a repeat Athlete of the Year. “I will miss it. Over the years, it’s been a great experience,” said Cartwright, an 18-year-old 12th grader at RM Bailey, who has been the club’s most dominant female sprinter. “I was pleased with my performance and how I was able to balance my track with my academics, so I was really proud of myself. I will do my best this year to try and get a scholarship. So I have to give it my all this year.” For Daniel Ermilus, he didn’t mind sharing the podium with Malcolm Williams. “I feel fine about all of the awards that I got, but I felt I could have done better overall to get more awards than I got,” said the 12-year-old HO Nash grade eight sprinter. “Next year, I’m looking forward to having a much better season and hopefully making the CARIFTA team. That is my main goal right now.” Bodie said he was very happy with the way things turned out, despite the fact that they got off to a late start and ended up finishing close to midnight. “We had a sold out atmosphere and so I just want to say thank you to our sponsors because without them, this would not have been possible,” he said. “There were a lot of surprises, but God is good. We hope next year, it will be bigger and better, but shorter. We just want to take this time to tell the athletes to continue to press forward, not just on the track, but in their school work.” Once again, comedian David Wallace flew in from Grand Bahama to serve as the co-master of ceremonies with Roadrunners’ assistant coach/secretary Mildred Adderley, whose two sons Avery and Michael Adderley were on the honours list. A number of parents were also singled out for their contribution to the club and sponsors Smith, Petty and Delancy were also honoured for their tremendous support of the Roadrunners. THE Arizona Wildcats were locked into another close game down the stretch when they turned to their freshman phenom to deliver in the clutch. DeAndre Ayton made a pair of jumpers on consecutive possessions to help the Wildcats pull away for an 88-82 win over the Alabama Crimson Tide at the McKale Center in Tuscon, Arizona, on Saturday. Ayton finished with 29 points and 18 rebounds, both season highs. Asked about where his confidence originates to take those shots with the game on the line as a freshman, Ayton said it was a matter of routine. “I don’t know,” he said. “That’s the shot I shoot in practice. I work on it. It was open to me and I thought it was a good shot. I’m just happy we got the win, it was a tough game.” The 18 rebounds were tied for the fourth most by a Arizona freshman, and were the most by any Wildcat since Aaron Gordon grabbed 18 rebounds versus Wisconsin in the 2014 NCAA Tournament. Tied at 76 with 3:18 left to play, Ayton gave Arizona the lead with a tip-in and followed with one of two at the line on the ensuing possession. Nursing a 79-77 lead, Ayton made both jumpers under the two-minute mark to give Arizona a six-point lead. “DeAndre was the difference,” Wildcats head coach Sean Miller said. “I just have a hard time believing there is anybody better than

Led by Jones, Shanxi XR has been the second ranked scoring team at 82 points per game and second ranked assist team at 15.8 per game and tops in rebounding at 37.9 boards per game. Jones finished the year averaging 15.5 points and 11.9 rebounds per game - a dramatic increase from her rookie season when she averaged 6.8 points and 3.7 rebounds per game. She also set a new WNBA single-season record with 403 rebounds for the season and added 20 double-doubles.

You could see the difference between us - we were rolling more and that helped us,” he said. Despite losing the final, Robert Scheidt said it was a great race. “A lot happened – position changes, tacking on each other, penalties – and then we had a

photo finish. We managed to do a good gybe on the inside and we got a little bit more pressure so that when we converged, I thought at one stage that we had got those guys. “But in the end I couldn’t go low because I was blocked by the race committee boat. They deserved it and for us to be part of that was really exciting,” he said. It was interesting to note that three of the four finalists were former Laser sailors who competed at the Athens Olympics in 2004. On that occasion Scheidt claimed gold, Goodison was

fourth and Mendleblatt seventh. Throughout the Qualifiers this week, Mendelblatt and Fatih had been the stand-out crew but perhaps suffered from coming into the Finals cold whereas the other teams had already warmed up in the quarter-finals and semis. Goodison was delighted by the outcome. “I am over the moon - I didn’t expect this at all.” Given today’s slightly breezier conditions, the smart money had been on the Star veterans, rather than a newbie to the class like him. “This morning we had a look at the trophy and I saw Bart’s

name on it [the late Andrew Simpson, who won Star Gold in Beijing 2008 as part of the British Olympic team with Goodison] and Frida mentioned that the top crew got the Andrew Simpson Trophy. “Somewhere up there I am sure Bart was smiling on us and making us hike a little bit harder. As a result of that decision, Forbes said the other A class boats made the decision not to sail in the regatta. Looking at what transpired, Forbes said he still feels they made the right decision. “As far as I’m concerned, the Best of the Best has not proven to be the Best of the Best,” he said. “If you check the A class, none of the boats that competed, were not the top boats. “So yes, you had a series of races which you termed the Best of the Best, but in my opinion, it was not as good as it was last year.” Unlike the initial event last year when all of the boats had to qualify to compete by winning one of the regattas held from January to October, this year the ministry opened the entry list to all boats that wanted to compete. As a result, the C class had a record 27 boats that competed.

MAN CITY WINS DERBY, EPL TITLE RACE TURNING INTO PROCESSION By STEVE DOUGLAS Associated Press MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Surely nothing can stop Manchester City now. The race for the Premier League title is turning into a procession after City beat fierce rival Manchester United 2-1 yesterday, extending its lead to 11 points in a record-breaking start to the season. This 14th straight victory for City is a record run in a single topflight season. No team has ever had this many points — 46 — after 16 games in the Premier League. To put City’s form into context, 46 points would have secured eighth place in the league last season. It’s only early December. Pep Guardiola’s team is doing it in style, too. Having already beaten Liverpool 5-0 and overwhelmed Chelsea in a 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge, City came to Old Trafford to play the other member of the current top four and had 65 per cent possession and almost twice the number of shots.
