he semi-final matchups are all set following the official draw and just eight teams remain to vye for the national soccer championship in their respective divisions. The 2018 Sam Haven National Soccer Championships, presented by the IL Cares Foundation, will move into the penultimate round tonight at

the Roscow A L Davies Soccer Field. In the Senior Girls’ division, the BAISS champions Queen’s College Comets and Lucaya International Buccaneers both had automatic byes to the semis and will be joined by the GSSSA champions CR Walker Knights and BAISS runners-up Aquinas Aces. In Senior Boys’ play, the Tabernacle Baptist Falcons will make their tournament debut in the semis and will be joined by the BAISS champions St Andrew’s Hurricanes,

GSSSA runners-up Anatol Rodgers Timberwolves and BAISS runners-up Lyford Cay Dragons. Match play begins at 4:30pm this afternoon with the QC Comets and CR Walker Knights in a

matchup of senior girls champions. The Knights advanced with a 4-2 win on penalty kicks over the visiting Bishop Michael Eldon Warriors Tuesday night. They will be followed by the first

Senior Boys semi, the AR Timberwolves against the ST Andrew’s Hurricanes at 5:55pm. The Hurricanes got the tournament off to an exciting start Monday afternoon with a 2-1 win over Abaco’s Patrick J Bethel Marlins while the Timberwolves pulled off a 2-1 upset over the GSSSA champions CR Walker Knights. In semi-final three, the LIS Buccaneers will face the Aces at 7:25pm. Aquinas advanced with a 1-0 win over the CV Bethel

Cavs even series 1-1 By TOM WITHERS AP Sports Writer CLEVELAND (AP) — LeBron James scored 46 points and added 12 rebounds as the Cleveland Cavaliers bounced back from a poor performance in the opener by holding off the Indiana Pacers 100-97 last night to even their Eastern Conference series at one game apiece. Dazzling from the start, James scored the game’s first 16 points and had 29 at halftime, dominating the way he has in so many previous postseasons. But in a season in which nothing has been easy for the Cavs, Cleveland was lucky that Indiana’s Victor Oladipo missed a wideopen 3-pointer that would have tied it with 27 seconds left. Kevin Love scored 15, but Cleveland’s All-Star centre injured his left hand, the same one he broke earlier this season, with 3:43 left. Love’s status could affect the remainder of this series — and perhaps Cleveland’s season. Kyle Korver added 12 points, all on 3s, and made several hustling plays for the Cavs. Oladipo scored 22 — he was in early foul trouble — and Myles Turner 18 for the Pacers, who shocked the Cavs with an overpowering win in Game 1. Indiana clawed back from an 18-point deficit and was within 95-92 when Oladipo, who scored 32 in the opener, somehow came free but missed maybe his easiest shot in two games. James grabbed the rebound and made three free throws over the final 22 seconds as the Cavs avoided falling behind 2-0 on the series. Game 3 is Friday night in Indianapolis. The 33-year-old James was expected to be more aggressive than in Game 1, when he was unusually passive, deferred to teammates and suffered the first playoff-opening loss of his career. But James was his unstoppable self again, and there wasn’t a whole lot the Pacers could do about him in the first half. Cavs coach Tyronn Lue shook up his starting lineup, going with Korver and J.R. Smith over Jeff Green and Rodney Hood.

TOP JUNIOR TENNIS PLAYERS ON TOUR By RENALDO DORSETT Tribune Sports Reporter rdosett@tribunemedia.net THREE of the Bahamas’ top junior tennis players continue their tour of tournaments throughout the Caribbean this spring. Jacobi Bain, Sydney Clarke and Donte Armbrister are currently in both the girls and boys main draw at the CO Williams Barbados Junior International 2018 in Bridgetown Barbados. Clarke, who is seeded No. 3 in the tournament, was the first on the court and defeated Payton Saca of the United States 6-1, 6-2. Armbrister advanced with a dominant 6-1, 6-0 win over hometown favourite Curt Seifert of Barbados. Jacobi Bain was defeated by Blu Baker (3rd seed) of Great Britain, 6-2, 7-6 (1). Clarke teamed up with Gabrielle Leslie of Barbados and the pair won 7-5, 6-4 over Karin Hamilton and Genevieve Queenville of Canada. Armbrister and Bain have partnered in doubles, however the results of their first round match against Andy Zhu of Canada and Romani Mayers of Barbados was unavailable up to press time last night. The tournament continues through Saturday afternoon. Prior to Barbados, the trio participated in the ITF Trinity Cup 2018 in Trinidad and Tobago. Armbrister opened with a tough three-set win over Romani Mayers of Barbados 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. He lost in the second round against Zvonko Bencedic of Great Britain 2-6, 2-6. Bain lost his opening round in three sets against Gabriel Hurtado of Columbia 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. Armbrister teamed with Christopher Heck of Canada in doubles to score a straight sets win against Bain and Jiri Krouzek 6-4, 6-2. BUSY WEEKEND AT ALBANY WITH WINTERBOTHAM IC JUNIOR SERIES IN the second of the Winterbotham IC Junior Series for 10s and 12s there were record numbers participating in this young group of developing players. So it was a busy weekend at The Lleyton Hewitt Tennis Academy at Albany for the first Bahamian tennis tournament to be held there. The concept of the event is to create a group that can come together and develop together through “round robin” play in a social environment that does not mean getting knocked out after one round and going home. So all players get several matches. A lunch is also provided for the juniors so they stay around, get to know each other and make friends. Before each day’s play and at the prize presentation a talk is given to

the juniors and their parents to help establish the right attitudes to development and enjoyment of tennis - the “game for life”. As well as the local IC organisers at the event were two international Davis Cup players who talked to the juniors - Fernando Gentil who played for Brazil and won the Orange Bowl as a junior beating Jimmy Connors. Fernando, an IC member, emphasised that at the age of the juniors present he was not the best but concentrated on development and did eventually become the best junior in Brazil. Fernando said “the event should not be all about winning today”. The other Davis Cup player was Grant Doyle, the academy director who played for Australia and talked to the kids about his THE WINNERS with organisers and Winterbotham sponsor at prize presentation. academy here in The Bahamas and how to develop as a tennis player. Feedback from both parents and juniors was excellent. The format is proving popular and everyone is looking forward to the next in the series at Baha Mar May 19-20 with many already signed up. Some overseas players are expected to come to this next event and strengthen the field, giving greater experience to our young Bahamian juniors. After the round robins there were “playoffs” all the way down the groups. At the top of each group the winners were: Patrick Mactaggart (Boys 10s), BreAnn Ferguson (Girls 10s), Michael Major ( Boys 12s), Kaylee Kanuka ( Girls 12s). There was also the “Charlie Farrington” Sportsmanship award given in memory of that popular local tennis enthusiast by his family. For this the juniors themselves were given a vote. Franco gets official offer from the Rebels By RENALDO DORSETT Tribune Sports Reporter rdosett@tribunemedia.net A SECOND Bahamian basketball talent could be headed to Oxford Mississippi this fall to join one of the basketball programmes at the prestigious Southeastern conference university. Prep basketball star Franco Miller Jr received an official offer from the Rebels yesterday, and immediately became the biggest programme to offer the 6’2” guard this recruiting season. Miller’s play thus far has attracted official offers from Hofstra University, Towson University, Montana State University, the University of Wyoming, St Bonaventure University and the University of Illinois at Chicago. There are also several other

programmes that have expressed interest. His announcement came just over a week after another Grand Bahama native, Yolett McPheeMcCuin, was introduced as the head coach of the Ole Miss Women’s basketball programme. Miller’s latest honour was being named to the roster for the 2018 Allen Iverson Roundball Classic, popularly referred to as the Iverson Classic. The event goes into its second year on April 21 with a mission to be the most competitive All American game in the country. In his lone season with Crestwood Prep in Toronto, Canada, Miller led the Lions to the National Preparatory Association playoffs. He averaged 21.8 points, four rebounds and 3.6 assists per game this season and was named

a First Team All-Star during the league’s tournament finale. The 2018 Iverson Classic will feature two teams comprised of the country’s most talented prospects. Team Loyalty features standouts like UCLA Commit Shareef O’Neal, Kentucky Commit Immanuel Quickley, UNC Commit Nassir Little and Syracuse Commit Darius Bazley. Team Loyalty will face Team Honour which features Anfernee Simons, LSU Commit Nazreon Reid, Mississippi State Commit Reggy Perry and more. Team Honour also features the most high profile appearance for Georgetown commit and internet phenomenon Mac Mcclung, who recently surpassed Allen Iverson’s all time Virginia scoring record. “These young guys are the future,” said Iverson, who is a

co-founder of the event along with businessman Jai Manselle and grassroots basketball veteran Bobby Bates. “I’m proud to have every single one of them here.” Team Loyalty will be coached by NBA champion Stephen Jackson and Wesleyan Christian head coach Keith Gatlin. Team Honour will be coached by 14-year NBA veteran Larry Hughes and Christian Brothers College High School head coach Justin Tatum. Tatum is also the father to 2017 NBA Draft pick Jayson Tatum. The 2018 Iverson Classic Weekend will tip off on Thursday (today), April 19 with a day of events, including Dunk Contest, 3-Point Shootout and more. HOLIDAY, PELICANS HAVE PORTLAND ON THE BRINK IN NBA PLAYOFFS By BRETT MARTEL AP Sports Writer NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Jrue Holiday’s postseason production is providing Pelicans All-Star Anthony Davis with a more comfortable margin for error — and has left Portland with precious little. Holiday’s 54 points, 16 assists and slew of defensive successes in the first two games are big reasons why the sixth-seeded Pelicans hold a surprising 2-0 series lead over the third-seeded Trail Blazers as they prepare for Game 3 tonight in New Orleans. “Playoff Jrue, I guess,” Davis quipped after Holiday scored 33 — including a late, deep 3-pointer — in the Pelicans’ Game 2 triumph in Portland on Tuesday night. “He’s in a different mode.” Philadelphia visits Miami in one of two other Game 3s tonight, while the Spurs’ return to San Antonio after a pair of double-digit losses at defending champion Golden State. Pelicans general manager Dell Demps bet big on Holiday on the first day of free agency last summer, giving the 27-yearold guard a five-year contract worth about $126 million. But if the postseason is where players really earn their money, then the Pelicans’ Holiday spending could very well be worth it. Holiday helped preserve New Orleans’ Game 1 victory with a leaping steal in transition during the final minutes, followed by a block in the final seconds. Those plays were prime examples of why Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry has asserted Holiday is one of the best two-way players in the NBA. “We ask him to guard the best perimeter player and we ask him to do it while we’re also wanting him to get 20 points,” Gentry said, noting that Holiday has had to take turns guarding both members of Portland’s prolific starting backcourt, guards Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum. “He can get to the basket against just about anybody that there is. His outside shot has really improved,” Gentry added. “He’s very confident in what he’s doing and the way he’s playing.” TRAIL BLAZERS AT PELICANS New Orleans leads 2-0. Game 3, 9 P.M., NBA TV. Philadelphia shot 18 for 28 from 3-point range in Game 1, but just 7 for 36 in Game 2. Wade had 28 points in 26 minutes in Game 2 , but at age 36, there’s no guarantee he’ll consistently

San Antonio was 4 for 28 on 3s in Game 2. “We know it’s just like hitting in baseball — the ability to make shots,” Popovich said. “I’m more concerned about the nuts and bolts of the game and the attitude and the fiber and the grunt and all that sort of thing.” KEEP AN EYE ON: The Warriors’ Klay Thompson. The 6-foot-7 guard is leading Golden State in playoff scoring at 29 points per game. He is shooting 70 per cent from the field, including 71 per cent on 3-pointers. INJURY UPDATE: Golden State centre David West is listed as day-to-day after twisting his left ankle in the fourth quarter of Game 2. Warriors point guard Stephen Curry is travelling with the team but will not play in the opening round of the playoff as he continues to rehabilitate a sprained knee. San Antonio’s Kawhi Leonard remains out as he continues to rehabilitate the right quadriceps tendinopathy that has sidelined him for all but nine regular-season games. STILL HOPEFUL: Spurs veteran Manu Ginobili has maintained that Golden State is the better team, but that doesn’t mean he’s ready to concede the series as it shifts to San Antonio. “The realistic thing is that we are not favourites,” Ginobili said. “They have three All-Stars in their prime, but we know we can beat them. We know we can do better than what we did, but I’m not going to feel embarrassed or I’m not going to go compete less if I admit they are a better team.”

Ronaldo netted an 87thminute equaliser with a subtle touch of the ball with his back to the goal, redirecting a low shot by Luka Modric from outside the area to give Madrid a 1-1 draw against Athletic Bilbao yesterday. The goal added to Ronaldo’s impressive scoring run and kept Madrid in the fight for second place, three points from Atletico Madrid, which visits Real Sociedad today. Barcelona, which drew 2-2 at Celta Vigo on Tuesday, holds a 12-point lead at the top of the standings.
