A slam dunk year and the ‘stars behind the scenes’ By BRENT STUBBS Chief Sports Editor bstubbs@tribunemedia.net

THIS year, Tribune Sports will not post its Athletes of the Year honours. Instead, the focus will be on some of the top personnel who made things happen in another banner year in sports for The Bahamas. The focus, in no particular order of who was the most outstanding, will be concentrated on some of the administrators, coaches and officials who performed admirably behind the scenes. There will also be a look back at some of the most memorable moments this year and some of the noted fallen stars who departed the scene. ADMINISTRATORS Clarence McKenzie As the new president of the Bahamas Baseball Association, McKenzie stepped in and continued to make the sport of baseball a vibrant one. National teams as well as club teams made their presence felt on the international scene, including here at home with the second place finish at the recently concluded Caribbean Baseball Cup at the Andre Rodgers Baseball Stadium. Team Bahamas' 2-1 loss to Curacao in the championship game was a painful one as The Bahamas was denied the opportunity to qualify for the final spot for the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games, scheduled for July 24 to August 8 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Local fans at the free fare got to view one of the best national teams assembled in quite some time, especially with a pitching core that brought bright hopes for the future of the sport as The Bahamas continues the trek of qualifying for the World Baseball Classic, instead of having players participating for Great Britain. Perry Newton Despite getting the flack from the local community that is still waiting on a court-ordered election of officers, Newton still strutted on as the president of the Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association. Newton and the association took both its junior and senior national teams off

and they performed admirably well, especially the women's Billie Jean King Cup and the men's Davis Cup, who both were successful in advancing from one level of competition to the next for 2026. The women's team, captained by Kim O'Kelley, and including Simone Pratt, Sydney Clarke, Saphirre Ferguson and Jalisa Clarke, moved from zone three to two, while the men's team, captained by veteran John Antonas, and featuring Denali Nottage, Michael Major Jr, Donte Armbrister and Kofi Bowe, won Group four to get promoted to Group III. The BLTA also got to host a major ITF World Tennis Tour for junior players, showcasing some of the rising young stars from The Bahamas against their peers from around the world in November. Earlier this month, the seniors were back on the court for the Giorgio Baldacci Open Nationals where the year closed out with 17-year-old newcomer and champion Jerald Carrolltaking the top spot over Michael Major for the men's Davis Cup team and Simone Pratt held off 14-year-old Addyson Munroe for the top two spots for the women's Billie Jean King Cup. The remaining players on the team will be fielded at a final trial sometime in 2026, which is also expected to be a critical year as the BLTA is also scheduled to hold its election of officers. There's no indication as to whether or not Newton will contest his seat against former Davis Cup player and captain Marvin Rolle, who has already expressed his desire to run for the top post. Algernon Cargill In winning his fourth and final three-year term as president of Bahamas Aquatics, Cargill guided the sport through its seventh straight victory at the CARIFTA Swimming Championships and its third at Goodwill Games. Not to be outdone, the water polo national team and the Mantas Water polo club also had some remarkable achievements that didn't go unnoticed. DeMarco, who spent the past 14 seasons as an assistant coach with the four-time champions Golden State Warriors, which recently added Bahamian Chavano 'Buddy' Hield, will now coach fellow Bahamian Jonquel Jones. Jones, like Hield who hails from Grand Bahama, is a 6-foot, 6-inch centre who averaged 13.6 points, 8.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game last season for the Liberty, the 2024 champions, who made a disappointing first round exit in the playoffs against the Phoenix Mercury this season. New York ended the regular season as the fifth seed with a 27-17 record before their playoff run was cut short. DeMarco is expected to lead the Liberty back to its prominence with Jones making her return from offseason right ankle surgery in October. Last summer, DeMarco coached the men's national basketball team to the runner-up spot at the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Valencia, Spain. The loss to Spain in the final denied The Bahamas, led by Hield, a trip to the Olympic Games in Paris, France. It would have been an historic first for The Bahamas in team competition at the games, if they qualified.

Swim Club as the most dominant in Bahamas Aquatics. McPhee, a former swimmer who represented The Bahamas on various national teams, has gone a step further in serving as the returning coach for Team Bahamas in their “seventh heaven” feat as champions at CARIFTA. Antoan Richardson Much has been said about the stellar job that infielder Jasrado 'Jazz' Chisholm did in his first full season with the New York Yankees. But how about the exploits of Rchardson as a first base coach for their New York rival Mets. Richardson, the seventh

Bahamian to play ahead of Chisholm in Major League Baseball, was invited back for the 2026 season with the Mets, despite some off season changes after they finished the 2025 season in second place in the American League before they were ousted in the playoffs. While he continues to make his presence felt for the Mets, could we one day see Richardson leading the charge as the coach of the men's national team? Only time will tell. Memorable Moments World Championships Devynne Charlton Displaying why she's still the fastest on the planet in the short races, Charlton blasted the field in the women's 60 metres hurdles to repeat as champion at the World Athletics' 2025 World Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China, lowering her world record to 7.72 seconds. However, she led Team Bahamas at the World Championships outdoors in Tokyo, Japan where she once again had to settle for sixth place in the longer 100m hurdles in a season's best of 12.49. • SEE PAGE FIVE

Bahamian forward Rhema Collins emerges as ‘a centrepiece’ for FIU By JONATHAN BURROWS Tribune Sports Reporter jburrows@tribunemedia.net RHEMA Collins’ breakout season in women’s college basketball continues to gain attention, as the Bahamian forward emerged as a centrepiece for Florida International University’s women’s basketball team during the 2025–26 campaign. After steadily developing through the early stages of her collegiate career, Collins has taken a major step forward this season with her consistency to become one of the most productive players in Conference USA. Collins’ rise has been driven by opportunity paired with confidence. Playing extended minutes and operating as a primary scoring option, she

has shown the ability to control games in multiple ways. Her size and strength allow her to finish COLLINS through contact in the paint, while her improved footwork and mid-range touch have made her difficult to contain. Just as important, she has become a reliable rebounder and defender, giving FIU a true two-way presence in the frontcourt. Heading into late December, Collins is averaging 19.7 points, 10.4 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game on the season, showcasing her elite productivity. In her most recent outing on December 20, 2025, FIU fell in a tightly contested

game at home against Florida Atlantic, 60–57. Collins played 29 minutes, having a relatively quiet night finishing with 9 points on 3-of-10 shooting, seven rebounds, and three assists, while adding two steals and two blocks. Her stat line in the narrow loss demonstrated her all-around contribution, even when the Panthers came up just short. That performance followed a string of other standout games that have defined her season. Earlier in December, Collins led FIU in a 78–61 victory over Youngstown State, scoring 28 points with 12 rebounds, four steals, and two blocks, marking her third straight double-double and sixth of the season. In that game, she also recorded a careerhigh four steals, showing her disruptive ability on defence as well as offence.

Dominick Bridgewater making a name for himself in French basketball league By JONATHAN BURROWS Tribune Sports Reporter jburrows@tribunemedia.net DOMINICK Bridgewater continues to make his mark professionally in France’s competitive basketball circuit, showcasing his growth as a scorer and leader during the 2025-26 season with Fos Provence Basket Byers in the French NM1 league. After returning to the club where his pro journey first began in Europe, the Nassau native has been one of the team’s most consistent performers this campaign. On December 20, Fos Provence defeated Saint-Vallier 111-98 where

Bridgewater finished with 25 points, 10 assists and four steals. In the 2025-26 season so far, he is averaging 19.5 points, 4.8 assists, and 2.8 steals per game, while playing close to 29 minutes per night, a clear indicator of his central role in the team’s offence. In his other most recent games, Bridgewater has delivered several standout performances. On December 16, against Pays Salonais, he poured in 29 points and added six assists. On December 12 against Lyonso Basket, he contributed 24 points, five rebounds, and five assists. His strong play has extended beyond club play as well, highlighted by an

When they asked me to come back and have a leadership role to play in the team, I didn’t even hesitate.” These comments highlight how comfortable he feels back with the club and his eagerness to embrace a leadership role. The organisation originally brought him to France as a teenager and developed him through its academy system before he climbed the professional ranks across multiple French leagues. His return to the organisation has since been a positive move, and he has quickly repaid that confidence with consistent high-level play. His strong club performances have also translated to duty. Representing Team Bahamas at the 2025 FIBA AmeriCup, Bridgewater averaged 24 points, five assists, and two steals across two games, ranking among the national team’s most productive players during the tournament.

Coaches and commentators in France have taken notice of his influence. Team staff and teammates have regularly pointed to his leadership qualities and work ethic as major factors in Fos Byers’ competitiveness, particularly in close games where Bridgewater’s poise and scoring touch have proven decisive. At 25, Bridgewater now blends veteran experience with peak production, cementing himself as one of The Bahamas’ premier professional basketball exports. As the season continues, his performances with Fos Byers and Team Bahamas reinforce his growing reputation as a reliable leader and difference-maker on the international stage.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Chet Holmgren had 29 points and nine rebounds, and the Oklahoma City Thunder pulled away in the second half for a 129-104 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers yesterday, ending a two-game skid. Holmgren made 12 of 17 shots, including 2 of 4 from 3-point-range, for Oklahoma City (27-5), which was coming off consecutive losses to the San Antonio Spurs. The Thunder shot 50 for 87 (57%). Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had 27 points, five assists and two steals, and Jalen Williams added 14 points and six assists for the NBA-leading Thunder (27-5). Gilgeous-Alexander made 10 of 13 field goals and shot 7 for 9 from the line before sitting out the fourth quarter. He scored at least 20 points for the 103rd consecutive game. Tyrese Maxey scored 28 points, Quentin Grimes had 13 and former Oklahoma City star Paul George added 12 for Philadelphia (16-14), which played

SACRAMENTO, California (AP) — Russell Westbrook scored 21 points and moved past Magic Johnson for seventh place on the NBA’s career assists list while leading the Sacramento Kings to a 113-107 win over the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday. Westbrook grabbed five rebounds, and his nine assists gave him 10,149 — eight more than Johnson. The 37-year-old Westbroook also moved within nine points of tying Dominique Wilkins for 19th on the NBA’s scoring chart while propelling Sacramento to its third victory in 13 games. Dallas got within 111-107 with nine seconds remaining before DeMar DeRozan made two free throws to seal it. Keon Ellis hit five 3-pointers and had 21 points, Maxime Raynaud added 19 points and Dennis Schroder scored 10. Rookie guard Nique Clifford had eight points and nine rebounds off the bench to help the Kings (8-23) to their fourth consecutive win over the Mavericks. Deyton Albury looks to develop his own ‘Ball Head’ By BRENT STUBBS Chief Sports Editor bstubbs@tribunemedia.net DEYTON Albury is not only looking forward to completing his collegiate tenure with the New Mexico Lobos men's basketball team, but his sights are set on developing his own Ball Head merchandising band. The 23-year-old 6-foot, three-inch guard, who transferred from the Utah State Aggies, has helped the Mountain West defending champions to an impressive start to their 2025-26 season with a 10-2 win-loss record heading into their next game at Boise State in Boise, Idaho, on Tuesday. After spending a few days at home for the Christmas break, Albury said he's eager to see what unfolds for him and the Lobos, coached by Eric Olen, who has his team riding a seven-game winning streak. "We have a brand new team, so we're just getting used to each other and finding our identity," said Albury, who in 11 of the games he played in has scored a total of 137 points for an average of 12.5 points and 3.9 rebounds per game with a total of 38 assists, 17 steals and two blok shots. "Right now, we are right where we want to be."

While home, Albury said he took the time to relax with his family, including his parents, Michel and Geniece Albury, along with his 20-year-old brother, Michael Jr, who is hoping to follow in his footsteps as a collegiate player. During the time home, Albury also got to make some inroads with the official release of his clothing and merchandising brand called Ball Head. It was a brand he developed from an idea he had growing up as a youngster. He remembered how he wanted to wear compression shirts, tights and socks. "Nike was kind of expensive, so I decided to come up with my own brand and my own design because I want to keep the prices for my items more affordable and realistic so people can be able to purchase them," he said. "Being a division one basketball player with all of the attention that comes with it, you never know where they can take me, so I just want to go with it now before I finish college." When it's officially launched on the website in January, Albury will be selling 10 Ball Head items, including long and short tights, compression shirts, tank tops, socks, head band, wristbands, t-shirts, short

pants and water bottles. Prices for the items will be revealed once the website goes up. "I have a lot of help from my family, so it won't be a distraction for me playing basketball for New Mexico," Albury stated. "I will just be dealing with everything on the side and behind the scenes." The Ball Head concept was conceived by Albury in 2024 when he drew the logo in a book, sent it to one of his cousins, who brought it to life and was displayed on all of his social media platforms. "Nobody knew what was really going on," Albury said. "It was just a logo." However, this summer, Albury came home and hosted his first Ball Head basketball camp at the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium where he made it official. During the camp, he was able to provide an opportunity for some of the young players to perform in a closed environment camp that he didn't get as a former Temple Christian Academy standout who went on to complete his high school tenure at Sunrise Christian Academy in Kansas. Albury's passion to continue to play at a higher level continued as he enrolled in Believe Prep in South Carolina, Chipola

and Queens before he went to Utah State for his first season in division one, only to enter the transfer portal where he ended up at New Mexico. He said he's eager to see how things will materialise with the Lobos as they seek to defend their title and hopefully advance further than the first round they reached before they were ousted. "We're trying to win the Mountain West Conference title again," said Albury, who decided to join New Mexico after he helped Utah State get second in the Mountain West before they got eliminated in the first round of the March Madness as well. "We want to make March Madness again. I know they got knocked out of the first round last year, but we're hoping to go further this year. Once you win your first round, anything is possible." At New Mexico, Albury said he's gotten the opportunity to play more than he did at Utah State and he's been able to fit right into their style of play. As he makes the best of his opportunities, Albury said he would love nothing more than to go out with a bang as a senior, having given his all to the Lobos basketball team.

NBA Rookie Breakout Year: Valdez ‘VJ’ Edgecombe The Bahamas witnessed the rise of a new phenom as Edgecombe earned the number three pick in the National Basketball Association’s 2025 draft by the Phileadphia 76ers after just one year at Baylor University. The Bimini native has taken the league by storm and is being mentioned as the possible Rookie of the Year over top pick Cooper Flagg from the Dallas Mavericks with his impressive 15.9 scoring average and high leaping highlight slam dunks so far this season. Edgecombe, 20, joins a list of Bahamians playing in the NBA, including his 76ers’ team-mate Eric Gordon, Chavano ‘Buddy’ Hield with the Golden State Warriors and Deandre Ayton with the Los Angeles

It will be interesting to see what impact he continues to make alongside Tyrese Maxey in the potent backcout for the 76ers and who out of the Bahamian players will advance the furthest in the NBA playoffs in May. World Record breaking performance: Timothy Munnings After enjoying his success as a member of the men’s 4 x 400m relay team, Munnings produced another sensational season as a masters competitor when he broke the men’s 55-59 world record in the 400m, twice this season. He erased a 22-year-old mark of 52.24 by American Charles Allie in January at the DTSP Wolfpack/Mike Sands Track Classic at the Thomas A Robinson Track and Field Stadium with his new time of 52.04. A month later at the 19th Diana Lynn Thompson Road Runners Track Classic at the same stadium, lightning struck twice for Munnings as he lowered the time to 51.18. CARIFTA Glory: Eagan Neely and Jahcario Wilson shine While there were quite a number of performances that were recorded in The Bahamas’ second place 37-medal haul at the CARIFTA Games in Trinidad & Tobago, Neely and Wilson provided a 1-2 punch in the under-17 boys’ division that will be unforgettable. Neely swept the 200m in 21.22 and the 400m in 47.80, while Wilson came through in the 110m hurdles in 13.70 and the 52.44. They also were members of both Team Bahamas’ victories in the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400m relays. Their four gold medal feats were beaten by

Jamaica’s JKamari Kennedy, who captured the gold in record breaking performances in both the under-17 boys’ discus and shot put for the Austin Sealy award for the most outstanding athlete. Volleyball Spike: Bahamas host competitive CVC Tournament The Bahamas hosted the 2025 Caribbean Volleyball Championships in August at the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium with Curacao winning its first ever men’s title and Trinidad & Tobago regained the women’s title. Team Bahamas, behind the stellar plays from pro players Kyle Wilson and Shonari Hepburn, gave it gallant effort but fell short in the final after dethroning defending champions Suriname in five thrilling sets in the semifinals. Wilson was named the best outside hitter and Hepburn was awarded the middle blocker 1. The most valuable player was Dervin Colina of Curacao. The women, on the other hand, placed fifth. No player got any individual award as Channon Thompson of Trinidad led the star-studded field as the outside hitter 1, best server and MVP. BACO: Officials celebrate 50 years of existence It was good to see the Bahamas Association of Certified Officials (BCO), now known as the Bahamas Association of Certified Officials in Track and Field (BACOITF), take the time to honour their 50 years of unselfish service to the sport of track and field. Honouring the late Deacon Leviticus ‘Uncle Lou’ Adderley, BACOITF held a number of events

including a gala awards banquet to recognise the achievements of some of their members who went beyond the voluntary call of duty to get the job done. Kudos to veteran president Val Kemp and her executive team and all those persons singled out for their commitment and dedication to the thankless job of ensuring that track and field meets go off with a smooth operation. Your efforts did not go unnoticed. Couple of the Year: Johnsons’ marital bliss St Augustine’s College welcomed its newest couples as two former athletes, middle distance runner William ‘Knucklehead’ Johnson and thrower/ softball standout Dawn Woodside-Johnson tied the knot in a private August wedding at St Joseph Catholic Church. Johnson still holds The Bahamas’ national record in the men’s 1,500m at three minutes and 45.72 seconds, while Woodside-Johnson, a twin to former hurdler Dianne Woodside-Johnson, is a former discus and shot put thrower. She is also credited with being one of the few women to hit a home run out of one of the local softball parks. Death Notice: Basketball In the span of one month, the basketball world saw the demise of three former talented players in Kenneth ‘Hart-to-Hart’ Wilkinson, Member of Parliament Vaughn Miller and Joel Brennen. All three of these players made an impact in the New Providence Basketball Association with their respective fierce, finesse and ferocious styles of play for their respective

teams. There were others but to watch as these three departed one after the other, was memorable. They were joined by Samantha Gilbert, a former female national team standout who would have played in the New Providence Women’s Basketball Association. Cricket: Sidney Deveaux Known as a man who was ‘smooth as silk,” Deveaux led the Bahamas Cricket Association as president when the sport was at an all-time high with both local and international matches played primarily at Haynes Oval. It was a time when the expatriates from the region came out and mixed their game with the local residents to produce a healthy environment for all to enjoy. What was so tragic was the fact that he and his loving wife, Sandra, died within days of each other in November. Walk Racing: Philip Moss Who can forget Moss, whose ultimate goal was to represent The Bahamas as an international walker. He was a dominant factor on the local scene until his hip injury that required surgery derailed his plans. At one of the Central American and Caribbean Championships held here in The Bahamas, Moss got his wish to compete against his international peers. But he didn’t get to complete the course after officials removed him as one of the slowest competitors. Moss, 70, was also a topnotch auto body repairman out of the Fox Hill community, but more specially the Johnson Road area where he resided and worked.

Bodybuilding: Jan Johnson One of the country’s most attractive competitors, Johnson electrified the stage with her grace and humility as a women’s national bodybuilding champion from Grand Bahama and a fierce competitor at the Central American and Caribbean Bodybuilding Championships. She quietly slipped away in November, but will be remembered as an icon in the sport of bodybuilding. Farewell to one of the GOAT: Eddie Ford There’s no argument about who was one of the most versatile athletes the country has ever seen. Out of Dorsey Park, Ford exemplified why he was considered one of the greatest all-around athletes of all-time. He hit more centuries in cricket than anyone could count, he lit up the nets in basketball with a 100-point performance that will probably never be dedicated and he stood his ground as an exceptional outfielder in both baseball and softball. When he was done playing, he devoted his time as an exemplary softball and baseball umpire, while venturing into golf to occupy his leisure time, a sport he indicated had he started earlier, he would have mastered as well. He stood out above many of the rest he went before him and whom he left behind. As we close out the pages of 2025 and open 2026, we pray for God’s divine intervention on all of our athletes, coaches, managers, executives, officials and fans in all of our endeavours in the Commonwealth of the Bahamas.

Maye throws career-high 5 TDs and Patriots beat Jets 42-10 By The Associated Press EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Drake Maye threw a career-high five touchdown passes before getting the rest of the game off in the third quarter, New England scored a TD on its first six drives and the Patriots finished the regular season undefeated on the road by dominating the New York Jets 42-10 yesterday. Rhamondre Stevenson had a TD run and catch for the Patriots (13-3), who moved closer to winning the AFC East title for the first time since 2019. Maye was 19 of 21 for 256 yards and a 157.0 quarterback rating with TD tosses to Stevenson, Stefon Diggs, Austin Hooper, Hunter Henry and Efton Chism III before being lifted by coach Mike Vrabel for Joshua Dobbs with 5:31 left in the third quarter. Maye joined Tom Brady (11 times) and Drew Bledsoe (twice) as the only New England quarterbacks to reach 4,000 yards passing in a season. EAGLES 13, BILLS 12 ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Josh Allen sailed a 2-point conversion attempt wide of open receiver Khalil Shakir in the back of the end zone with 5 seconds remaining, and Philadelphia hung on for a win over Buffalo. Dallas Goedert caught a 1-yard touchdown pass, Jake Elliott hit field goals of 28 and 47 yards, and the Super Bowl champion Eagles barely avoided squandering a 13-0 fourth-quarter lead. Linebacker Jalyx Hunt had two of Philadelphia’s four sacks and a team-leading three quarterback hits. Defensive tackle Jalen Carter made a major contribution in his return after missing three games with a injuries to both shoulders. Carter got his hand up to block Michael Badgley’s extra-point attempt after Allen’s 2-yard touchdown run with 5:11 left.

Allen scored on a tush push on fourth-and-goal to pull the Bills within one point with 5 seconds remaining. The Bills thought they had a touchdown one play earlier, but Dawson Knox was ruled short of the goal line after a replay review. Rather than playing for overtime, coach Sean McDermott opted to go for 2. Allen dropped back in the pocket and had a defender in his face when he let loose a pass that was about a foot wide of Shakir. The Bills then tried an onside kick that Goedert recovered. The NFC East champion Eagles (11-5) are assured of at least the conference’s third seed entering the playoffs. SEAHAWKS 27, PANTHERS 10 CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Zach Charbonnet ran for 110 yards and two touchdowns, and Seattle turned two third-quarter Carolina turnovers into TDs to beat the Panthers and close in on the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs. Sam Darnold threw an interception in the end zone but finished 18 of 27 for 147 yards with a touchdown for the Seahawks, who can wrap up the NFC West title and the top seed if the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams both lose or tie. Jaxson Smith-Njigba added nine catches for 72 yards as Seattle (13-3) won its sixth straight. The Panthers (8-8) had a chance to win the NFC South because the Tampa Bay Buccaneers lost 20-17 at Miami on Sunday. Now the Panthers will likely need to win at Tampa Bay next weekend to win their first division title since 2015 and snap a seven-year playoff drought. BENGALS 37, CARDINALS 14 CINCINNATI (AP) — Ja’Marr Chase caught two touchdown passes from Joe Burrow, who threw for 305 yards as Cincinnati beat Arizona. Chase finished with seven catches for 60 yards and became the first player in NFL history with at least 80 receptions, 1,000 receiving yards and seven TD catches in each of his first five seasons. Burrow passed for 300 yards or more for the 28th time, tying Andy Dalton for the most in franchise history. Chase Brown ran for 101 yards and two touchdowns as the Bengals (6-10) improved to 3-2 since Burrow returned from left toe surgery. Arizona’s Trey McBride had 10 catches, giving him 119 this season to break the NFL single-season record for a tight end, topping Zach Ertz’s 116 in 2018. The Cardinals (3-13) had the seventh-ranked pass offence the league, but the improved Bengals defence held them to 233 total yards. Jacoby Brissett threw for 212 yards and two TDs. The Bengals scored on their first two possessions. BROWNS 13, STEELERS 6 CLEVELAND (AP) — Shedeur Sanders threw for 186 yards and a touchdown, Cleveland’s defence kept Pittsburgh out of the end zone and the Browns held on for a victory, preventing the Steelers from clinching the AFC North. Pittsburgh (9-7) came into the weekend needing either a win or loss by Baltimore for its first division title since 2020. Instead, the Steelers will host the Ravens to close the regular season the winner getting the division and the AFC’s fourth seed in the playoffs. The Browns (4-12) snapped a four-game losing streak, along with a seven-game skid in division games. It is the first time since Dec. 10, 2009, that the Browns defeated the Steelers and held them without a touchdown. Cleveland scored on its first two possessions and jumped out to a 10-0 lead. Sanders completed 17 of 23 passes, including a

touchdown and two interceptions as he improved to 2-4 as an NFL starting quarterback. JAGUARS 23, COLTS 17 INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Trevor Lawrence ran for two scores, Cam Little kicked a tiebreaking 42-yard field goal with 6:58 left, and Jacksonville beat Indianapolis, moving within one victory of its first AFC South title since 2022. The Jags (12-4) won their seventh straight game one day after two-time defending division champ Houston beat the Los Angeles Chargers to remain in contention for the title. The Texans’ victory also eliminated the Colts from playoff contention. Jacksonville’s Liam Coen became the first coach in NFL history to take over a four-win team and win 12 games the next season. Lawrence went 23 of 37 for 263 yards, though his streak of consecutive games with at least 225 yards passing, two TDs and a passer rating over 100 ended at four. He did not have a touchdown pass and he threw his first interception in five weeks. SAINTS 34, TITANS 26 NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tyler Shough threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Austin Jr. with 6:22 left to put New Orleans ahead to stay as they rallied from a 13-point deficit to beat Tennessee. Shough improved to 5-3 as a starter, helping the Saints (6-10) win their fourth straight. He outplayed Cam Ward, the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, in this NFL’s third game between starting rookie quarterbacks this season. Shough was 22 of 27 for a career-best 333 yards and two touchdowns with a 142.7 passer rating. Audric Estime added a 32-yard TD run with 3:44 left as New Orleans dominated the second half. The Saints both outscored the

Titans 24-6 and outgained them 331-152 after halftime. Chase Young had 1 1/2 of the Saints’ four sacks and also stripped Ward and returned the fumble 33 yards for a touchdown. Charlie Smyth kicked a pair of field goals. Young got a half-sack with 5:16 left to force the Titans in a three-and-out. The Titans (3-13) now go into the 2026 season trying to string together consecutive wins. That’s something this franchise hasn’t done since Nov. 13 and Nov. 17 of the 2022 season. They are 1-8 at home this season. GIANTS 34, RAIDERS 10 LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Las Vegas Raiders moved into position to snag the top pick in next year’s draft after losing to Jaxson Dart and New York in a matchup of teams with the NFL’s two worst records. Las Vegas (2-14) will secure the top pick with a loss next week to Kansas City. The Raiders’ skid reached 10 games, which matches last season’s streak for fifth-longest in franchise history. The Giants (3-13), who snapped a nine-game losing streak, could still wind up with the top pick if they lose to Dallas next weekend and the Raiders beat the Chiefs. Interim coach Mike Kafka got his first win after losing his first five, and the Giants had their largest margin of victory since defeating Indianapolis 38-10 in Week 17 of the 2022 season. Dart, taken by the Giants with the No. 25 pick in the 2025 draft, showed his dualthreat ability by passing for 207 yards and rushing for 48 yards and two touchdowns. Wan’Dale Robinson caught 11 passes for 113 yards to become the first player 5-foot-8 or shorter to reach the 1,000-yard mark since 5-7 Richard Johnson in 1989. Texans clinch third consecutive playoff berth with a win over the Chargers By The Associated Press INGLEWOOD, California (AP) — C.J. Stroud threw for two long touchdowns on Houston’s first two drives of the game, and the Texans went on to beat the Los Angeles Chargers 20-16 on Saturday and clinch a third consecutive playoff berth for the first time in franchise history. The Texans (11-5) won their eighth in a row, their longest such streak since winning nine straight in 2018. The Chargers (11-5) had their four-game winning streak snapped and handed the AFC West title to idle Denver. They beat the firstplace Broncos in Week 3, but blew a chance to set up a winner-take-all showdown in Denver in Week 18. The Chargers got knocked out of the playoffs in a wild-card loss to Houston last season. Stroud’s two explosive TDs stunned the Chargers and gave Houston a 14-0 lead. On his first pass of the game, he hit Jayden Higgins

for a 75-yard score against busted coverage. Stroud wasn’t pressured when he threw a 43-yard TD to Jaylin Noel, who wasn’t covered. The Chargers had allowed just one TD pass of 40 or more yards in their last 15 games. Stroud completed his first six throws of the game. He finished 16 of 28 for 244 yards and two interceptions. Houston’s defence forced third-down sacks of Justin Herbert on the Chargers’ first two possessions. They were three-and-out on three of their first four possessions, quieting the SoFi Stadium crowd. RAVENS 41, PACKERS 24 GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Derrick Henry rushed for a season-high 216 yards and matched a career high with four touchdown runs

as Baltimore kept their playoff hopes alive by defeating Green Bay. Henry had three touchdown runs in the first half and then scored again on a 25-yard run with 1:56 left in the game. His seventh career 200-yard rushing performance moved him ahead of Adrian Peterson and O.J. Simpson for the most in NFL history. His 36 carries represented a career high. The Ravens (8-8) now must hope the AFC North-leading Pittsburgh Steelers lose at Cleveland on Sunday. A Steelers victory in Cleveland would end Baltimore’s playoff hopes. The Browns beat the Steelers last night so the Ravens could win the AFC North by beating the Steelers in Pittsburgh on January 4. Green Bay (9-6-1) lost its third straight, enabling the Chicago Bears to clinch the NFC North title. The Packers already clinched a playoff berth on Thursday when the Detroit Lions lost 23-10 at Minnesota.

Dolphins beat Bucs 20-17 to force pivotal Week 18 NFC South game By ALANIS THAMES AP Sports Writer

MIAMI GARDENS, Florida (AP) — Rookie quarterback Quinn Ewers threw for 172 yards and two touchdowns, including a 63-yard toss for his first career score, and the Miami Dolphins beat the slumping Tampa Bay Buccaneers 20-17 yesterday. The Bucs (7-9) remained one game behind the Carolina Panthers (8-8) in the NFC South after the Panthers' 27-10 loss to Seattle on Sunday. The Buccaneers would still clinch their fifth consecutive division title and sixth straight playoff berth if they beat Carolina in next week's regular-season finale to force a two-way tie. If Tampa Bay, Carolina and Atlanta all tie at 8-9, the Panthers would win the division. But Tampa Bay has lost four straight games, seven of its last eight and has barely looked like a playoff team during that stretch. The Buccaneers' last four losses have all been by one possession. Despite three turnovers and being outgained 145-53 on the ground Sunday, Tampa Bay pulled within three after a three-play, 91-yard drive that Baker Mayfield capped with a

4-yard touchdown pass to Mike Evans with 54 seconds left. A busted coverage by the Dolphins defence led to a 59-yard reception by Chris Godwin that set up the score, but Miami recovered the ensuring onside kick to end Tampa Bay's comeback attempt. Mayfield completed 33 of 44 passes for 346 yards with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Godwin on the game's opening drive. The former No. 1 pick has thrown an interception in each game of the Buccaneers' losing streak, including two on Sunday. The first was an underthrow to receiver Jalen McMillan that was picked off by rookie cornerback Jason Marshall Jr. The second came as the Buccaneers were driving down the field midway through the fourth, trailing by 10. Mayfield, one play after somehow escaping a sack attempt by Quinton Bell and completing an 11-yard pass to Evans, threw a red-zone interception to safety Ashtyn Davis. After the Buccaneers forced a Dolphins punt, linebacker Bradley Chubb stripped Mayfield on a sack, which Bell recovered. Ewers completed 14 of 22 passes in his second career start for the Dolphins (7-9), who have already been

eliminated from the playoffs. Rookie receiver Theo Wease Jr. took Ewers' first TD pass 63 yards into the end zone, and tight end Greg Dulcich caught an 11-yard scoring pass. McLaughlin had connected on 11 straight field goals from 55-plus yards entering Sunday but had a 55-yard attempt blocked late in the second.
