championship title with the Sunshine Auto Wildcats as their shortstop. “But I started to settle down and put more balls in play and I felt a little more confident, so I was able to settle into the match. I’m very proud of myself in taking her to the limit. Hats off to her for hanging in there.” With a little rest, Pratt bounced back and pulled off her second win with a 6-0, 6-2 win over junior player Elana Mackey. he University of the Bahamas Mingoes gave the visiting Spring Arbor University Cougars all they could handle, but it wasn’t enough in the first of their two matches played on Monday at the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium. The Cougars, who surged from No.20 to No.16 in the second regular season edition of the NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball Coaches’ Top 25 poll last week, withstood the challenge to prevail with a 84-76 triumph. SAU’s head coach Ryan Cottingham said it was good to get the first one under their belt. “We were pleased with how we played,” he said. “UB is very good. They play hard, they are athletic, they are aggressive and they are very well coached. It was an honour to play. They never went away. We had our hands full, so we feel very good to get out here with a victory today.” The Mingoes, coming off their final game for the year in the New Providence Basketball Association on Friday night, are 3-4 but head coach Bacchus Rolle said they should have won against the Cougars. “Lil disappointed. We had some spurts there where we were just out of it mentally,” he said. “It was a winnable game, great adversary. We can play with them. We could get a win.

We just had some miscues and some of the players just didn’t come to play mentally.” Senior Zach Medendorp, shooting 12-for-16 from the field and 2-for-4 from behind the three-point arch, canned 26 points with four rebounds to lead SAU. Sophomore Paul Marandet was the only other player in double figures with 16 points on 7-of-8 from the field and 2-for-2 from the free throw line. Both Jeff Beckman (with 10 rebounds) and Drew Zuidema had eight points and Ben Geschke (six rebounds), Tommy Hamilton and Brandon Durnell (six rebounds) all chipped in with seven points. Playing 38 minutes and 24 seconds, sophomore Kemsy Sylvestre connected on 14-of-26 from the field and 5-for-10 from the charity stripe for a game high 33 points to lead the Mingoes. He also had nine rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block shot. Ramon Dames contributed 14 points, five rebounds and four assists and Justin Smith came up with 10 points, four rebounds, four steals and two assists. Their next best scorer was Brian Jennings with five points. The Cougars roared to a 31-24 lead at the end of the first quarter and held on for a 46-38 advantage at the half. At the end of the third, the Mingoes trailed 66-56 and even though they managed to cut the deficit to

TEAMS ARRIVE AS BAHAMAS BOWL WEEK OFFICIALLY KICKS OFF By RENALDO DORSETT Tribune Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net BOWL week has officially kicked off in the Bahamas. Both participating teams in the 2017 Bahamas Bowl, the Ohio University Bobcats and the University of Alabama Birmingham Blazers, arrived in New Providence yesterday to begin a busy week of activities leading up to Friday’s matchup on the field. The Bobcats were the first to arrive at the Atlantis resort, and head coach Frank Solich said the entire programme was eager to enjoy their time in the Bahamas with the main focus - a win on the field. “It’s a great destination, our players our staff our families really looked forward to getting down here and it was an enjoyable trip. I’ve been here a couple times previously, the people are great, it’s a very hospitable place. The bowl itself has grown. “We expect to have a good time and play some good football at the end of it. For the players, coming to a warm destination like this is really exciting to them. You hear about the Bahamas, most of our players have never had a chance to be here so they’re delighted to actually get this opportunity and to be a part of it.” The Bobcats went 8-4, 5-3 in the Mid American Conference play, and Solich leads the team to its 11th all-time bowl appearance in his 13th season at Ohio. He has taken the Bobcats to nine bowls, including in each of the last three seasons. He is the third-longest tenured coach in the FBS ranks. “I’m excited about practice and I know that’s not the way the players are, they are excited so they will have some free time to enjoy the island and this

Cowboys in hunt for playoffs, but they will need some help THREE weeks ago you all called me crazy, some Dolfans even called ‘Sandalinds’ telling them to come for me, when I predicted my Cowboys would win their last 5 games and make the playoffs as a Wild Card, the 6th and final seed in the NFC. Three straight wins for the Cowboys, and suddenly I’m not as ‘loopy’ as it first seemed. Now at 8-6, the Cowboys are still pursuing the playoffs, but they will need some help, like I stated three weeks ago. HELPING HANDS Dallas needs to defeat the Seahawks in Week 16. Nothing else matters unless that happens, because both teams will enter the clash at 8-6. A seventh loss will effectively eliminate both teams from the postseason. Even if Dallas moves ahead of Seattle, the New Orleans Saints and Carolina Panthers are each 10-4 with a game remaining against the hapless Tampa Bay Buccaneers. An 11th win would put both franchises out of the Cowboys’ reach, so their primary focus is hoping the Atlanta Falcons lose two of their next three games. The Falcons own the head-to-head tiebreaker after smashing the Cowboys 27-7 in the first game of Ezekiel Elliott’s suspension. Dallas cannot advance to the postseason if it holds the same record as Atlanta. Heading into Week 15 against the Buccaneers, the Falcons still must play the Saints and Panthers. So, it’s not unreasonable or too far fetched to think the Falcons could finish the campaign 9-7.

It’s a strong possibility the Eagles will rest several key players, so the Cowboys in effect could possibly cruise to a win. WAIT THERE’S MORE A 10-6 record doesn’t guarantee a playoff berth for the Cowboys. If the Detroit Lions win twice to end the season, Jim Caldwell’s team would be 10-6 and earn the tiebreaker by virtue of win percentage in common games. ( I think Mr Rodgers and the Packers, play spoilers the last week of the season in Lambeau Field.) IN A NUTSHELL Dallas must beat both Seattle and Philadelphia

while Atlanta loses twice and Detroit once. It’s really the only conceivable scenario, and still quite doable. I know, I know, I’m as crazy as bat!! PERSEVERANCE On another note, hats off to Jacksonville Jaguars WR Jaydon Mickens, who caught two touchdowns on Sunday, and he’s become a special-teams dynamo for them in recent weeks. Surprisingly though, until very recently, he was living out of his car, rather than signing a lease. Mickens was cut by the Oakland Raiders back in September. He didn’t have any idea of how long he’d be in Jacksonville, so the thought of being tied up in a lease was not appealing. “You can go into an offseason without a cheque for six months. I would rather

save every cheque, even if I’m on the practice squad for the whole year, and have something to fall back on,” Mickens said recently. It makes sense from a financial perspective, especially for a young, unproven player who might not last long in the league. Though, Mickens says he didn’t really let many people know about his situation, so his teammates had no idea he was sleeping in his car every night. “I came from nothing, I’ve been through a lot worse.” Mickens added. Things are a bit more concrete for the 23-yearold former Washington

Huskies receiver. He’s the first returner in Jaguars history to win two AFC Special Teams Player of the Week awards, the second of which he landed earlier this week following his 72-yard return against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. He’s averaging 13.1 yards per punt return, good for second place in the NFL. Truly inspirational, thank you Jaydon Mickens. (AP) — Devonta Freeman rushed for 126 yards and a touchdown to help the Atlanta Falcons stay close in the tight NFC South race with a 24-21 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday night. Freeman scored on a 32-yard run midway through the fourth quarter, restoring a 10-point lead for the Falcons (9-5), who then barely hung on to win for the fifth time in six games and remain one game behind New Orleans and Carolina in the division standings. Freeman also caught five passes for a team-high 68 yards and had a first-half fumble recovered in the end zone by teammate Levine Toilolo for a touchdown. Matt Ryan threw an early TD pass to Justin Hardy and finished 17 of 31 passing for 212 yards and no interceptions. Jameis Winston threw for 299 yards and three TDs for the Bucs (4-10), including a 16-yarder to Adam Humphries that trimmed Atlanta’s lead to 24-21 with 3:51 remaining. Winston, who also threw TD passes of 30 yards to O.J. Howard and 42 yards to Mike Evans, got the ball back with a minute left and nearly sent the game into overtime. The third-year pro completed three straight passes to move the ball from his 29 to the Atlanta 36. Patrick Murray came on to try a 54-yard field goal to tie it, but the kick sailed wide right as time expired. The Falcons play at New Orleans next Sunday, then close the regular season at home against Carolina — the two teams they’re chasing in the division race. Gruden was acquired from the Oakland Raiders in exchange for two first-round draft picks, two second-round draft pick and $8 million before leading the 2002 Bucs to the club’s only Super Bowl championship in his first season in Tampa Bay. Gruden was fired after the 2008 season and moved

into the broadcast booth the following season. The Bucs haven’t made the playoffs since 2007 and don’t have a postseason win since their Super Bowl run 15 years ago. The coach’s sons — Deuce, Mike and Jayson — led the Bucs out of the tunnel before the game as the team’s honorary flag runners. Gruden is the 11th member of the Ring of Honor, joining Hall of Famers Lee Roy Selmon, Warren Sapp and Derrick Brooks, as well as Doug Williams, John Lynch, John McKay, Mike Alstott, Jimmie Giles, Paul Gruber and Malcom Glazer.

GORDON’S BIG 4TH QUARTER LEADS ROCKETS TO 14TH STRAIGHT WIN HOUSTON (AP) — Eric Gordon scored 17 of his season-high 33 points in the fourth quarter to power a huge run that put the Houston Rockets on top, and they cruised to their 14th straight win, 120-99 over the Utah Jazz on Monday night. Houston used a 15-0 run early in the fourth to take the lead and was up by four midway through the quarter after a layup by Joe Ingles. The Rockets then scored 11 points in a row, capped by two 3-pointers from Gordon to make it 111-96 with about three minutes to go. James Harden added 26 points, Clint Capela had 24 points and 20 rebounds and Gordon finished with a season-high seven 3-pointers. The Rockets struggled from long range for most of the night, making just nine of 31 3-pointers in the first three quarters. The found their groove in the final period, when they made eight of 12 with five from Gordon to pull away for their 20th win in 21 games. Rodney Hood had 26 points off the bench for the Jazz, who have lost six of their last seven games. Westbrook scored 16 of his season-high 38 points in the fourth quarter, including the tiebreaking free throw with 2.3 seconds left, to lift the Oklahoma City Thunder to a 95-94 victory over the Denver Nuggets on Monday night. Oklahoma City survived, despite just eight points from Paul George and four from Carmelo Anthony. But trailing by one with seconds ticking away, the Celtics didn’t get the whistle they wanted. Instead, they got the steal they needed. Terry Rozier turned it into a go-ahead dunk with 1.5 seconds remaining that gave the Celtics a 112-111 victory over Indiana on Monday night. Gatlin and his entourage are now being investigated by sports and doping authorities after a Telegraph investigation uncovered how members of his team offered to provide prescriptions in a false name and smuggle the substances to the United States. Undercover reporters visited Gatlin’s Florida training camp where his coach and an athletics agent offered to supply and administer testosterone and human growth hormone for an actor training for a film. The products were to be provided via a doctor in Austria. The total fee for the project was to be $250,000 (£187,000).
