Newman brothers in Giorgio Baldacci Open By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net hen the Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association’s Annual Giorgio Baldacci Open is held next week, brothers Baker and Spencer Newman are looking to return and put on a show. The tournament is scheduled to begin on Monday and conclude on Saturday with the top men and women tennis players participating in singles and doubles. The BLTA intends to use the tournament as the trials for the men’s Davis Cup team and the ladies’ Fed Cup team. Baldacci, a former tennis instructor, past president and national women’s coach, passed away in 2012 at the age of 78. The BLTA has held the year-end tournament ever since in his memory. The Newman brothers, out of Florida, have been competing in the tournament for the past three

to be here on Sunday just in time to begin play on Monday. “I’m excited about it,” said Baker about coming here. “I haven’t played a tournament in a couple of months. This will be my first one in a while. I was injured for a little bit. So I’m excited to come back and play.” Although he was injured, Baker Newman is still actively involved with his Vanderbilt team. He still has one more semester before he graduates and switches his attention to playing professional tennis. But for right now, the focus is coming here and performing at his best. “I’m just going to take it one match at a time,” Baker stated. “Everyone has a fair chance of winning. It just depends on who’s on that day, so I have to be ready.” And even though he’s coming off an injury, Baker said he doesn’t intend to let that affect him. “I don’t think it will affect me at all,” he projected. “I think it’s going to help.”

ETIENNE NAMED BIG TEN ATHLETE OF THE WEEK UNIVERSITY of Indiana Hoosiers’ freshman Jyles Etienne was named the men’s field Big Ten Athlete of the ETIENNE Week after competing in the first collegiate meet of his career. The Nassau, Bahamas native set a new Hoosier Open record in the high jump with a personal best mark of 2.21m or 7-feet, 3-inches, which earned him the No.2 spot in the country. Competing in the Harry Gladstein Fieldhouse in Bloomington, Indiana, Etienne became the first Hoosier to be named the men’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Week since Dylan Anderson in 2014. While attending Stony Brook School in New York, Etienne represented the Bahamas at the CARIFTA Games this year where he soared to a bronze medal in his specialty. He was also the 2016 New York State champion and the runner-up at the 2016 New Balance Outdoor Nationals, only to finish in fourth place this year. Etienne and the Hoosiers will take a break for Christmas and return to action on January 6 when they compete in the Indiana vs Tennessee Duals in another home meet.

Broncos beat Colts 25-13 By MICHAEL MAROT Associated Press INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Denver quarterback Brock Osweiler ran for one touchdown and threw for two more last night to lead the Broncos past Indianapolis 25-13. Osweiler replaced the injured Trevor Siemian in the first quarter and played his best football of the season. The Broncos (5-10) needed it. After ending an eightgame losing streak Sunday, they picked up their first road win since December 4, 2016.

For Indianapolis (3-11), it was more of the same. The Colts blew an early 10-0 lead and have now lost five in a row, the longest skid of coach Chuck Pagano’s six-year tenure. Osweiler looked more like the player Denver envisioned when it drafted him in the second round in 2012, and the guy who filled in for an injured Peyton Manning during the Broncos’ 2015 Super Bowl season. He was 12 of 17 with 194 yards and took the Broncos on three second-half scoring drives — giving the league’s top-rated defence more than enough points.

C.J. Anderson ran 30 times for a season high 158 yards. But it was a rugged night. Siemian went to the locker room with an injured left shoulder after Barkevious Mingo drove him into the ground on the Broncos’ second series. Siemian did not return and the Broncos had no other immediate details on the injury. The scariest moment came with 14:01 left in the second quarter when Denver linebacker Deiontrez Mount appeared to make helmet-to-helmet contact with Colts tight end Brandon Williams on a punt. Williams was knocked

over backward and stayed on the ground as players from both teams dropped to their knees while trainers and doctors strapped him to a backboard and removed his facemask. When he was lifted onto a golf cart, Williams’ teammates came over to offer support. Colts officials said Williams had movement in his extremities and had suffered a head injury. He also did not return. Otherwise, the game between two non-playoff teams went pretty much as expected.

THE Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations (BAAA) will kick off its new season when they host their annual Odd Distance Meet in the original Thomas A Robinson Track and Field Stadium on Saturday. The meet is slated to begin at noon and will be geared to athletes competing in unusual events that will be contested like the 50, 150, 300, 600 and 1200 metre races on the track and field events from a shorter approach in the case of the jumps and a standing position for the throws. Following the meet, the BAAA takes a break for the Christmas holiday and is expected to resume competition in January as they prepare athletes for a number of events, including the CARIFTA Games that will be staged here for the eighth time in its 47-year history. The Bahamas first hosted the top junior regional meet in 1976. It returned and was staged here again in 1978, 1981, 1984, 1992, 2002 and 2013.

Wells’ ruling on PM Thunderbird ‘bittersweet’ in sailing community T

he Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources’ decision to allow the Aliv PM Thunderbird to sail in the second annual Bestof-the-Best Regatta has drawn more conversation, not just about the A class boat’s participation over the weekend in Montagu Bay, but in future regattas. The Aliv PM Thunderbird is owned by Rev Dr Philip McPhee, who did some remodelling of the boat, formerly the Tanquarey, which was banned from sailing for more than 30 years because it was deemed at the time not to be a Bahamian designed boat, one of the requirements for entry into the local regattas.  Everywhere you went around the regatta site over the weekend, the biggest discussion was about Minister Renward Wells’ final ruling to allow the Aliv PM Thunderbird to sail and whether it was a good decision by the majority of the top A class boats not to compete because of the decision.  The ruling came after an appointed seven-man committee by the ministry voted unanimously that the alterations that Dr McPhee made to the Aliv PM Thunderbird were not sufficient to make the boat any different from the Tanquarey.  Wells, the minister responsible for regattas, said he made the decision to allow the boat to sail in the regatta. As the authority over the committee, Wells was able to grant Dr McPhee his wish without having to go through any long, drawn out discussion.  That decision, however, has left a ‘bittersweet’ taste in the mouths of the sailing community and it was obvious from the reaction of

those who were on hand in Montagu Bay to get a first hand glimpse of one of the biggest controversies to hit the sport.  For those in a bitter state, there was a lot of concern about commissioning committees in the future when they felt that their decision didn’t matter. It was as if their work was in vain as the only consolation was that the Aliv PM Thunderbird was only granted permission to compete in the Best-of-the-Best Regatta.  However, many are also concerned with the fact that by allowing the boat to sail over the weekend, Dr McPhee has been given more ammunition to take on the committees at the various regattas in the Family Islands, who tell him next year that his boat is not eligible to compete.   For those who insist that the Aliv PM Thunderbird won’t be allowed to sail could be facing a legal issue that could put a damper on sailing, which has already gotten Prime Minister Hubert Minnis’ approval to become the national sport of the Bahamas, replacing the sport of cricket.  In the spirit of the sport, there were those who argued that they didn’t see any reason why the Aliv PM Thunderbird should not have been allowed to compete, considering the fact that she looked just like her rivals. The only difference was she didn’t compete like all

of them and that could be because the crew was just getting accustomed to sailing the boat. There were those who just wanted to see how well the boat stacked up against the other top boats that didn’t compete. For those persons, there were no issues. They concurred with Wells’ decision. They just wanted to see a competitive regatta.  But no matter what side of the coin you were holding, the controversy had an adverse effect on the regatta and it could spill over to the other regattas next year.  It’s not fair to Dr McPhee to say that we can only grant you permission to compete in this regatta, but you will have to fend for yourself against the other committees if you want to sail in their regattas. There should be one hard fast rule for all boats to compete in the regattas whether they are the small ones or the big ones. Hopefully, in the way forward as they look towards making sailing the national sport of the Bahamas, the ministry will bring all of the groupings under one umbrella and establish a national body or federation that will oversee all regattas and make each and every one compatible with each other. There shouldn’t be one rule for this regatta and another rule for the other regatta. Then there won’t be any discussion on whether or not this boat or that boat should be allowed

in any sport does it like the Roadrunners. They are in a class all by themselves as they outshine many associations and federations, who don’t even take the time to give back to the athletes for their performances.  Not only have they set the bar, but they have taken it higher every year and not only the athletes, but the parents are just as excited about watching their children take centre stage, even if they are not the best athletes to compete, in their respective age group divisions against the other clubs.  The Roadrunners have and are continuing to do it in grand style and Bodie and Adderley and the rest of the executives and coaches must be commended for putting on a high-class reception for their athletes and their parents.

It’s just so amazing to see how well they organise their awards banquet at the Atlantis resort where the athletes get to dress up from head to toe in all their splendor to receive their accolades for the hard work that they put in on and off the track during the course of the season.  Obviously, it’s a mammoth task and that is probably why no other club

Condolences to the Cargill Family  While he will be remembered for his contribution as a former president of the Bahamas Bowling Federation, The Tribune Sports Department wishes to extend its condolences to the family of the late Ashley Cargill.  Cargill, a politician as well, was instrumental in a family that made their presence felt in sports, especially his family members, including his sisters New Providence Women’s Basketball Association president Mynez Cargill-Sherman and Venice Cargill-Russell and cousin, Bahamas Aquatic Federation president Algernon Cargill, just a few to mention. They all made a name for themselves as members of the Big Red Machine sporting programme at St Augustine’s College.

THUNDER HELP GEORGE PREVAIL IN FIRST TRIP BACK TO INDIANA By MICHAEL MAROT AP Sports Writer INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Paul George struggled on homecoming night. He still left town with the crown. On a night the four-time All-Star was repeatedly booed and couldn’t seem to make a shot, he finally sunk two free throws with 10.7 seconds left Wednesday to seal Oklahoma City’s 100-95 victory at Indiana. “Yeah, I’m happy this circus is over with. Everybody can move on,” George said. “I understood what the environment was going to be, so it wasn’t a surprise.” Everything from finding the visiting locker room to dealing with the fans was different, and it seemed to take a toll. George went 3 of 14 from the field, 2 of 7 on 3-pointers, had two rebounds and four turnovers. But spurned fans who are still upset George’s camp went public with his free agent intentions last summer made sure the box score was the most pleasant part of George’s night. When first he walked onto the court for warmups, one fan shouted “traitor!” During player introductions, the boos reached a crescendo and every time he touched the ball, the

boo-birds returned with full force. The only cheers came when George made a mistake or drew a foul. Fortunately, George’s friends helped him out. Steven Adams finished with 23 points and 13 rebounds while reigning MVP Russell Westbrook recorded his ninth tripledouble of the season — 10 points, 17 rebounds and 12 assists. And when George came up with the final steal of the game, he pumped his arms and his teammates savored the moment as much as he did. “I thought he had incredible poise tonight,” Thunder coach Billy Donovan said. “Everybody was asking how is he and I hadn’t really noticed anything different. I thought his defense — certainly on the side out of bounds play — was really critical for us.” The trade for Victor Oladipo and Domantas Sabonis was widely panned as below market value, but has turned out pretty well so far for the Pacers. Oladipo led Indiana with 19 points and nearly brought them all the way back from an 11-point deficit with 5:16 left. The Pacers got to 96-94 with 1:07 to go and had a chance to tie it when they got the ball with 15.2 seconds left and down 98-95.

Instead, George came up with the steal and made the free throws to seal the win, silence the crowd, end the Pacers’ four-game winning streak and leave town as the king of the night. “That team showed us that when you’re playing against these elite teams, it’s going to be a physical game and we didn’t match that tonight,” Pacers coach Nate McMillan said.

ALL-STAR DAY The Pacers got a win before they even took the floor. A little less than three hours before tip, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver announced Indiana would host the 2021 All-Star Game. It will be the first time the Pacers have hosted the marquee event since 1985. The move comes seven months after Larry Bird hand-delivered the formal proposal at the league’s New York headquarters in an IndyCar. Paul leads Rockets over Hornets 108-96 for 11th straight victory By KRISTIE RIEKEN Associated Press HOUSTON (AP) — With the way Mike D’Antoni has handled Houston’s rotation lately, there are times nine-time All-Star Chris Paul is left to run Houston’s offense against second-team defenses. That combination proved the difference on Wednesday night when Paul led the Rockets to a huge run in the first half that helped them extend their NBAbest winning streak to 11 games with a 108-96 victory over the Charlotte Hornets. Paul scored a season-high 31 points and James Harden added 21 to help Houston to its 17th win in 18 games and improve to 22-4, the best record in the league. After allowing the Pelicans to stick around before putting them away late in their last game, the Rockets made sure this one was decided early. Houston led by one late in the first before scoring 25 straight points over the end of that quarter and the beginning of the second to make it 49-23 and cruise to the easy win. “Chris comes in fresh (and) if I’m not mistaken something like 2:50 to go in the first quarter we go on a (25) to zip run. Game’s over,” D’Antoni said. With Harden on the bench, the Rockets scored the last 14 points of the first quarter, with the last nine from Paul, to turn a one-point lead into a 38-23 advantage entering the second quarter. Houston continued to pile on to start the second, scoring the first 11 points of the period to extend its run to 25-0 and make it 49-23 with 9:45 left in the half. The Rockets made six 3-pointers during that run, with three from Paul and one from Eric Gordon.

NBA CAPSULES WIZARDS 93, GRIZZLIES 87 WASHINGTON (AP) — Bradley Beal scored 18 points and John Wall had 13 in his return from a sore knee to help Washington hold off Memphis. James finished with 25 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists to move a tie with Larry Bird for sixth place on the career triple-doubles list. He also put the Lakers away with a dunk and short runner in the final two minutes. Now that he’s just about done with school and he’s getting ready to compete at the pro level, Baker said he’s looking forward to helping out the Davis Cup team next year. “I will be done with school and playing on the tour, so I would be able to help out the team,” he said. “So I’m really excited about that.”

Nick Foles ready for challenge of replacing QB Carson Wentz By ROB MAADDI Associated Press PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Nick Foles is stepping into a pressure situation with a team that has enormous expectations in a city desperate for its first Super Bowl title. He’s no ordinary backup quarterback. Foles had tremendous success as a starter for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2013 and he experienced failure as the No. 1 quarterback for the St. Louis Rams in 2015. He’s won an offensive MVP award at a Pro Bowl, been traded, released and contemplated retirement. Now, he’s the man leading the NFC East champions. Foles is no Carson Wentz, who was having an MVPcaliber season before he tore his left ACL. But, he’s a capable quarterback who won’t be overwhelmed by the spotlight. “He’s matured as a quarterback, his leadership ability, his understanding of our offense, of defenses,” Eagles coach Doug Pederson said Wednesday. “We always knew he was a smart intellectual quarterback.” Pederson was here was an assistant when former coach Andy Reid selected Foles in the third round of the 2012 draft. Foles started

six games that season for a 4-12 team. He began 2013 as the backup to Michael Vick in Chip Kelly’s first season in Philly. Foles replaced Vick after he was injured in October, had a sensational season and led the Eagles to their most recent playoff appearance — a home loss to New Orleans. Foles threw 27 TDs and only two picks in 10 starts and posted a passer rating of 119.2, third-highest in league history. He tied an NFL record with seven TD passes in a game at Oakland in November 2013. Foles wasn’t quite as spectacular in 2014, but the Eagles were 6-2 in his eight starts. He tossed 13 TDs, 10 interceptions and missed the final eight games after breaking his collarbone. Kelly traded him to St. Louis for Sam Bradford in March 2015 and Foles went 4-7 on a 7-9 team. He was released by the Rams and reunited with Reid in Kansas City as Alex Smith’s backup. Foles filled in nicely when Smith was injured last season and led the Chiefs to a victory in his only start. He returned to Philadelphia to back up Wentz on an $11 million, two-year contract.

Even stepping into the game like the other night, you’re in the fourth quarter, you’re on the road, it’s a big game. “And you really just go back to your training, you go back to your experiences in life. You know how to sort of live in that moment

to execute the plays to help your team win.” Foles rallied the Eagles to a 43-35 win against the Los Angeles Rams by guiding the offense to field goals on consecutive drives after Wentz went down. He’ll get his first start at the New York Giants (2-11) on Sunday against an aggressive defense led by interim coach Steve Spagnuolo. The Eagles can secure a first-round bye with a win.

They’ll lock up the NFC’s No. 1 seed with two wins in their final three games or one win and one loss by the Vikings (10-3). “It starts with that chemistry,” Foles said. “The teams that I have been on that have been really good have had that, and this is one of them.” While Foles doesn’t possess Wentz’s scrambling ability and elusiveness, the Eagles don’t plan to change their offense. But coaches wouldn’t say otherwise. It would make sense to rely more on a strong running game led by Jay Ajayi, LeGarrette Blount and Corey Clement. “Certainly it starts at quarterback, but it’s really built around all the talent that we have on offense,” offensive coordinator Frank Reich said. “And good for us that all our quarterbacks are talented. “Now Carson has some unique, physical traits that he does exceptionally well, but it’s nothing that Nick can’t handle. So we’re fullsteam ahead.” Wentz had surgery to repair his ACL on Wednesday. Players typically need between nine and 12 months to return to the field.

(AP) — The San Francisco 49ers circled up in their locker room last Sunday moments before taking the field at Houston and Jimmy Garoppolo spoke up to challenge his teammates. “Play relentless! Be violent!” he demanded.

Only later did it dawn on the linebacker it had been his starting quarterback speaking, someone accustomed to taking those punishing — “violent” — hits. “We just need the energy to be up and keep getting the pregame speeches from Jimmy, because they seem to work,” Harold said. “This is the quarterback saying these things, the guy who can be a

(AP) — Tennessee Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota apologized on Wednesday for his choice of words during his postgame news conference after Sunday’s loss to Arizona. Mariota, speaking to reporters for the first time since Sunday, said he acted “rude and inappropriate” after an ineffective performance in the Titans’ 12-7 loss to the Cardinals, in reference to how he played. The often low-key Mariota was asked if he was showing his competitive side. “Yeah. It was funny because I got an earful of it from my mom,” Mariota said. “That’s how I was raised, and I appreciate you guys understanding.” Mariota hopes to make up for that game on Sunday when the postseason-contending Titans face the San Francisco 49ers (3-10). ICC: No evidence of corruption regarding 3rd Ashes test By IHITHISHAM KAMARDEEN Associated Press PERTH, Australia (AP) — The International Cricket Council says there is no evidence the third Ashes test had been “corrupted” after claims in a British newspaper that bookmakers offered to fix parts of the match. The Sun newspaper published purported evidence of bookmakers offering to sell details of rigged periods of play for betting purposes in the test which began yesterday in Perth. ICC anti-corruption unit general manager Alex Marshall launched an investigation. “From my initial assessment of the material, there is no evidence, either from The Sun or via our own intelligence, to suggest the current test match has been corrupted,” Marshall said in a statement. “At this stage of the investigation, there is no indication that any players in this test have been in contact with the alleged fixers. “The allegations are wide-ranging and relate to various forms of cricket in several countries, including T20 tournaments. We will look closely at all the information as part of our investigation.” Marshall said police have not been contacted over the claims. “Nothing has been referred as yet because we are still assessing the information. If we deem that offences have taken place in countries where matchfixing is illegal then, yes, we will work with the local police and report our concerns and share information to push for prosecution.” Cricket Australia and the England and Wales Cricket Board offered to cooperate with the ICC investigation.

During the video, information on fixes is estimated to be worth around $150,000. There is also mention of fixing “four to five” Big Bash League matches. Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland said he spoke with Marshall about the allegations, and wondered why the story was published on the day the third test began. “There’s no substance to these allegations or justification to suspect that this test match or indeed the

Ashes series as a whole is subject to corrupt activities,” Sutherland told a news conference at the WACA. “My comments today are based on a briefing I’ve had from Alex Marshall and I don’t think for one moment anyone should believe that we’re complacent. “The timing is a bit strange, obviously, but I guess I’ll leave that to Alex to make judgments on what the reason behind this might be.” The ECB said it was “aware of these allegations and there is no suggestion that any of the England team is involved in any way.” Australia leads the fivematch series 2-0 after victories in Brisbane and Adelaide and can regain the Ashes with a victory at the WACA, a venue where England’s only test victory was in 1978.
