or the second consecutive year, the country’s top pro baseball prospects will host another showcase of local and international talent, vying for the title of the Bahamian Home Run Derby King. The Don’t Blink Home Run Derby, powered by REV, is all set for noon on January 5, 2019 at the Montagu foreshore, featuring over 30 participants in the unique showcase. The project is the brainchild of Todd Isaacs Jr and Lucius Fox Jr of the Cleveland Indians and Tampa Bay Rays organisations respectively. With a greater number of participants, the roster for this year’s event will be divided into teams headlined by Fox and Isaacs. “We made some adjustments to this year’s event to bring more excitement because every year we want to make it bigger and better,” Fox said. “Speaking from my experience, once I got back to training camp, everyone was asking about it and wanting to come down to the next one so it was starting to get hectic with the number of prospects that have contacted us and we just wanted to involve everyone. This year we made it a team format to have as many international prospects and at the same time showcase our Bahamian talent.” Following the team format, the top four individual hitters from each team will advance to see who will be crowned the Bahamian home run king. Twenty active Bahamian professional players will participate in the event, up from 16 local participants last year. In 2012, there were just two active Bahamians in the minor league system, indicative of baseball’s exponential growth in the country.

Home run barriers will be set by buoys in the water that have been measured with the proper major league approved dimensions. “We were very happy with the turnout we had last year being the first of many,” Fox said. “Our whole goal was just to inspire as many kids as possible. We decided to bring it back to help those kids and also to give the Bahamian people something to enjoy.”

THE Bahamas’ fourmember team began competition with a personal best at the 14th FINA Short Course World Swimming Championships in Hangzhou, China. Victoria Russell was the first competitor for the team and swam her top time in the women’s 50m breastroke. Her time of 32.94 seconds finished at No.34 overall among the field of 60 athletes. The remainder of the team takes to the pool on day two. Ariel Weech swims in the preliminaries of the 100m freestyle, N’Nhyn Fernander competes in the 100m butterfly and Kohen Kerr takes on the 200m freestyle. Russell will return for her second event on day three in the 50m fly. Fernander will be the lone competitior on day four in the 50m fly. The team concludes their meet on day five with Weech in the 50m free and Kerr in the 100m free. Short Course Worlds, as they are sometimes known, is an international swimming competition. It is held in the years when FINA has not held its main World Championships. A total of 960 athletes from 178 countries are set to compete for 46 world titles December 11-16. FINA President Julio Maglione addressed the organisation prior to the start of the event.

‘Defying the Odds, Fulfilling Our Dreams’

Roadrunners enjoy 19th annual awards banquet at Atlantis resort ROADRUNNERS head coach Dexter Bodie said ever year they take the time out to recognise young people striving to be great in the sport of track and field, whether they were forced into it by overzealous parents or came on their own free will. He said they try to change the lives of every athlete they come across. Bodie was speaking at the club’s 19th annual Awards and Presentation Banquet on Saturday night in the Crown Ballroom of the Atlantis resort on Paradise Island. This year’s event was held under the theme: “Defying the Odds, Fulfilling Our Dreams.” The scripture text was taken from Genesis 45: 6-8 and the theme song was “When You Believe,” by Whitney Houston. A number of dignitaries attended the event, including newly elected Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations president Drumeco Archer and his wife, long-time patron Harrison Petty and his wife, perennial sponsor William Delancy and his wife and Mr and Mrs David Higgins, in whose name bears the club’s highest award for academics, the Dominique Higgins Award. The banquet, according to Bodie, served as an annual graduation service in which they reflect on the past and project a brighter future for the athletes in the club. “We award ourselves for excellence, laugh at past mistakes, shed failures and embrace the promise of the new year,” he stated.

Bodie revealed that 2018 was a trying year, but for every downfall, they strive for a win. “For every hurdle, we strive to jump it higher than the one before,” he said. “Each victory this year is now one which culminates in this annual celebration of what it means to persevere. “This year’s theme, ‘Defying the Odds, Fulfilling Our Dreams’, is a testament to the way we are able to soldier on in the face of adversity.” Bodie said they see faces come and go and whether by choice, chance, fate or destiny, the club grows stronger together from it all. “I would like to extend thanks to the parents and coaches of the Roadrunners club who stand by me through it all,” he said. “To be here, you believe in the goals and vision that I have set forth for the athletes. Roadrunners fosters spiritual and academic growth along with athleticism in order to produce students and athletes well versed in all manner of life disciplines.” As they now prepare for the 2019 season, Bodie said it brings its own set of challenges and they are more than prepared to meet this head-on, knowing that they have each other to lean on for unconditional support. “These kids come from so many different backgrounds and as much of an influence we have on them as adults, role models, and coaches, they also have a profound influence on us coaches and executives,”

I have had the privilege to watch many of these athletes grow and mature from little kids to young adults preparing to face life on their own for the first time.”

For next season, Bodie said he intends to see a continuation of love, laughter, fun, creativity, positivity and determination from both parents and athletes. “We coaches also promise to uphold the values of the club that was built on the strong foundation set by founder Dianna Lynn Thompson,” he said. • The winners of the Athletes of the Year, awarded by Mr and Mrs Delancy, are as follows:

Bahamas golfers bring home the Higgs & Higgs Trophy THE Bahamas was well represented at the recent Caribbean Golf Association’s (CGA) Four Ball Championship. Recently, the event was held at the famous PGA Golf Resort in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. The championship included players from the Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago, Puerto Rico, Barbados, Jamaica and Cayman Islands. Players competed in teams of two in five divisions as well as the Ambrose Gouthro Cup for the best combined score. Scoring was based on the

best ball of the two-man team over three rounds of play. one and held the lead from start to finish, winning by six shots with a combined score of 222. Cayman was second with 228, followed closely by Jamaica with 229. Both McIntosh/McIntosh and Miller/Swann finished 6th in their respective divisions. Team Bahamas finished 5th overall in the Ambrose Gouthro Cup. The team was accompanied on the trip by manager/coach Anthony Hinsey, the vice president of the BGF. President Lynford Miller said he was happy to see one of the trophies come back to the Bahamas.

English teams edge Italians to advance in Champions League By GRAHAM DUNBAR AP Sports Writer GENEVA (AP) — It ended England 2, Italy 0 on a tense night of decisive Champions League group games yesterday. Liverpool advanced to the round of 16 by beating Napoli 1-0, though it relied on a stoppage-time save by goalkeeper Alisson Becker. Tottenham is also in Monday’s draw after defying expectations in Barcelona thanks to Lucas Moura’s 85th-minute leveller in a 1-1 draw. Even with that point, Tottenham still needed Inter Milan to fail to beat winless PSV Eindhoven — and it ended 1-1 in San Siro. Both English teams overcame nervous endings to finish runner-up in their groups, and edged headto-head tiebreakers with Italian rivals after finishing level on points. A late goal in any of the three games would have changed the equation but Alisson saved Liverpool, second-half substitute Lionel Messi couldn’t lift Barcelona, and Inter failed to find a winner in seven minutes of stoppage time. Napoli kicked off Tuesday leading Group C but dropped below Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain, which won 4-1 at Red Star Belgrade to advance in top spot. The four qualifying places in the other two groups playing Tuesday were decided last month. Still, Borussia Dortmund’s 2-0 win at Monaco meant it rose above Atletico Madrid — which drew 0-0 at Club Brugge — to win Group A. Porto had already clinched Group D’s top spot before winning 3-2 at

Galatasaray, and runner-up Schalke beat visiting Lokomotiv Moscow 1-0. Group winners will be drawn against a runner-up and play the second leg at home in the round of 16. Third-place teams transfer to the Europa League’s round of 32, which is also drawn Monday at UEFA headquarters. Napoli and Inter are joined there by Club Brugge and Galatasaray. ENGLAND’S REVIVAL England is having a stellar year on the international stage compared to fourtime world champion Italy. The English reached the semi-finals at the World Cup in Russia, for which Italy failed to qualify, and advanced to the Nations League Final Four. Italy could have hosted that mini-tournament next June but failed to advance from a group won by Portugal. Now, England will have all four of its teams in the Champions League round of 16 draw because both Manchester clubs, City and United, already secured their places before playing today. After Napoli and Inter was eliminated Tuesday, Italy has just two teams in the draw. Juventus and Roma are also already through ahead of their final group-stage game today. Liverpool gave its fans a nervous night at Anfield, scoring just once from 21 attempts on goal. Sadio Mane was the biggest culprit, wasting three clear chances to give his team extra margin for error. Only a reflex save at the end by Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson denied Napoli substitute Arkadiusz Milik.

Liverpool will be without centre back Virgil van Dijk in its first leg at home in the next round. Van Dijk will be suspended for getting a third yellow card in the group stage. It could have been more, as a tackle on Dries Mertens followed through on the Napoli forward’s lower left leg and risked a red card. Tottenham was minutes from exiting the competition, trailing to a superb seventh-minute solo goal from Ousmane Dembele, who shot past his France teammate Hugo Lloris. Barcelona rested several regular starters, yet still dominated much of the game with Philippe Coutinho twice striking the woodwork. Harry Kane then found Moura unmarked near the six-yard box to score past back-up goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen. Inter trailed for much of the game to PSV, who took

the lead in the 13th from Mexico winger Chucky Lozano’s goal. Mauro Icardi’s fourth goal in the competition in the 73rd was not enough for Inter, which won its opening two games then failed to win any of the next four. PARIS, DORTMUND ON TOP Paris Saint-Germain began its group with a loss at Liverpool but went unbeaten the rest of the way, scoring 17 goals in total. PSG’s superstar strike force of Edinson Cavani, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe all scored in a 4-1 win in Belgrade that ensured the French champion will avoid the likes of Barcelona and Manchester City in the next round. Borussia Dortmund leads the Bundesliga and also topped its Champions League group. Raphael Guerreiro, the Portugal wing back, scored in each half in a 2-0 win in Monaco, which finished in last place with just one point.

EUROPA PLACE Galatasaray was the big winner yesterday in Group D, getting a place in the Europa League round of 32 despite its first home loss this season, 3-2 against Porto. The Turkish team retained third place in the group when Lokomotiv Moscow gave up a stoppage-time goal in a 1-0 loss at Schalke. Porto and Schalke had already advanced before kickoff. Porto tops the group with an impressive 16-point tally and is seeded in Monday’s draw.

HOPE’S UNBEATEN 146 LEADS WEST INDIES TO LEVEL ODI SERIES DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) — Opener Shai Hope smashed an unbeaten 146 for West Indies to beat Bangladesh off the third-tolast ball and send their one-day international series to a decider yesterday. Bangladesh made 255-7 and Hope singlehandedly thwarted the host with a career-best ODI knock to hold together the West Indies’ winning reply of 256-6 and keep the series alive. The third and final match is on Friday back at Sylhet. Bangladesh looked set to secure a third straight bilateral series win when it exposed the West Indies tail at 185-6. But Hope shared an unbeaten 71 off 64 balls with Keemo Paul for the seventh wicket, in which Paul contributed only 18. “It was just to bat as deep as possible,” Hope said. “We know Keemo has very good batting ability. I had full confidence in

him. “We just tried to rotate as best as possible. We knew the wicket was a bit difficult to come in and strike from ball one so he played a very crucial hand here to go over the line.” The West Indies needed 32 off the last 18 balls to win and scored 10, including a Hope six back over bowler Rubel Hossain. The equation dropped to 22 off 12, and Hope brought victory in sight by hitting pacer Mustafizur Rahman for three boundaries — all of them from the same perfectly manufactured shot — in a 16-run penultimate over. “It was a bit slow,” Hope said of the pitch. “When the bowlers took some pace off, it was a lot more difficult to get bat on ball especially against Fizz (Mustafizur). His offcutters were quite difficult to get away in the crucial stage. The wicket wasn’t the best for strokeplay but it was much better than the last game.”

Paul ended up hitting the winning runs, as the West Indies finally beat Bangladesh on this tour after three heavy defeats in the tests and first one-dayer. “We should celebrate a bit more because we didn’t have much to celebrate in recent times,” Hope said. Hope’s match-defining innings of 146 not out off 144 balls was laced with a dozen boundaries and three sixes. It was his third century. An ordinary start didn’t portend West Indies’ finish. Chadrapaul Hemraj, who replaced Keiran Powell, was first out for 3. Hope found support from Darren Bravo (27) and Marlon Samuels (26), who ensured the West Indies didn’t collapse as in the first ODI. He and Bravo combined for 65 runs until Bravo was removed by fast bowler Hossain. Hope and

Samuels shared 62 runs as they kept the asking run rate under control. Once Mustafizur got Samuels caught by Mushfiqur Rahim, the Bangladesh bowlers took wickets at regular intervals. But Hope remained unfazed. He brought up his third century with a single through cover point off 118 balls, and kept growing with confidence. Paul finally gave him much-needed support, and they held their nerve. Their platform was set by the West Indies fast bowlers, whose controlled aggression at the end prevented Bangladesh from causing havoc. Bangladesh scored just 26 runs in the last five overs as fast bowlers Kemar Roach and Oshane Thomas varied their pace cleverly to curb the batsmen’s aggression. For Bangladesh, Shakib Al Hasan was the highest scorer with a 62-ball 65.

Mushfiqur added 62 and opener Tamim Iqbal 50. After being sent in to bat first, Bangladesh fell in trouble when opener Liton Das retired hurt because of an ankle injury, but he came back later to bat and made 8. Imrul Kayes continued his horrible series, being dismissed for a duck before Tamim and Mushfiqur resisted. They shared an 111-run stand but both of them were removed in three overs. Just when West Indies appeared to take the control, Shakib and Mahmdullah (30) added 61 runs together to set up a late blitz. But Thomas, with 3-54, and Roach, 1-39, put the squeeze on Bangladesh to prevent a blitz. “We were at least 15 to 20 runs short,” Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza said. “We lost a lot of wickets when set in the middle and then Shakib, Mahmudullah got out.”

CHIEFS SUPPLANT RAMS ATOP AP PRO32 POLL, SAINTS STAY NO. 2 By SIMMI BUTTAR AP Sports Writer NEW YORK (AP) — Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes has had a special season so far. A league-leading 43 touchdown passes. A no-look pass against the Baltimore Ravens. And he has led the Chiefs to the top of the latest AP Pro32 poll. The Chiefs received seven of 12 first-place votes for 379 points in balloting yesterday by media members who regularly cover the NFL. Kansas City (11-2) moved up a couple of spots to No. 1 after rallying for an overtime victory over Baltimore. The Chiefs clinched a playoff berth and maintained a one-game lead over the Los Angeles Chargers in the AFC West. “There were no gaudy stats for MVP candidate Patrick Mahomes against Baltimore’s rock-solid defence, but there were clutch plays in crunch time in an overtime win that may be the deciding factor in securing home-field advantage in the AFC playoffs,” Newsday’s Bob Glauber said. The Saints (11-2) received the remaining five first-place votes for 376 points to stay at No. 2. The Chargers (10-3) jumped two spots to No. 4 and travel to Arrowhead Stadium on Thursday night to face the Chiefs to open Week 15. “Can they beat the Chiefs?” Fox Sports’ John Czarnecki asked of the Chargers. The Rams, LA’s other team, fell from the top

spot to No. 3 after Sunday night’s 15-6 loss to the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field. The Rams return to Sunday night play this week when they host the Eagles. “The Bears just proved you can shut down the Rams’ offence if you can shut down (running back) Todd Gurley,” said Ira Kaufman of Fox 13 in Tampa, Florida. “Difficult, but not impossible.” The Bears’ win helped them move up one spot to No. 6. The New England Patriots slipped a spot to No. 5 after their improbable 34-33 loss to Miami on the final play as the Dolphins scored on a pass and double lateral to complete a 69-yard pass. It was the longest play from scrimmage to win a game with no time remaining in the fourth quarter since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger. Another team that fell in the poll after losing was the Houston Texans. The Texans slipped two spots to No. 7 after being defeated by the Colts 24-21 to end their nine-game winning streak. The Seattle Seahawks and Dallas Cowboys each moved up a spot to Nos. 8 and 9 after winning at home last week. Both 8-5 teams improved their playoff position in the NFC. The reeling Pittsburgh Steelers, who have lost three in a row, dropped two places to round out the top 10. The Steelers, who have a half-game lead in the AFC North, host the Patriots on Sunday in a key AFC showdown.

Forbes’ double-double sends Spurs past Ayton and Suns By The Associated Press SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Bryn Forbes had a season-high 24 points and a career-best 11 rebounds as the San Antonio Spurs beat the Phoenix Suns 111-86 last night. San Antonio has won three straight halfway through a six-game homestand. The Spurs, who are allowing 113.3 points per game, have limited their opponents to 101 points during their winning streak. LaMarcus Aldridge added 18 points in 25 minutes. He sat out the fourth quarter with San Antonio leading by as many as 25 points. Phoenix, which was without leading scorer Devin Booker for the fifth

straight game, never led while falling to 4-24. T.J. Warren led the Suns with 23 points and De’Anthony Melton added 17. Rookie DeAndre Ayton was the only other Phoenix player in double figures, scoring 12 points on 6-for-10 shooting. Featuring players aged seven and older, from 9am-1pm. “We encourage everyone to come out and workout with the pros, interact with them and learn as much as you can. It will certainly be a fun-filled experience,” Fox said. “We just wanted to do something for the Bahamian people. The kids are the future, we know that they’re the future, we take it upon ourselves to help them every chance we get. So bring your kids out, allow them to work with us, the many pros from the Bahamas and the visiting international pros as well.” Jazz Chisholm will be one of the favourites in the event, following his season of milestones, highlighted by his 30 home runs. “I hit 30 home runs for a reason, that’s all I can say,” when asked if he should be the first selection in the draft. “But the entire experience was great. Having our friends come from the US to participate was amazing. Just having the kids come up and tell us how they want to chase their baseball dreams has been amazing as well. Even though it’s our job we are still having fun so for a lot of kids and parents to

voice that, that was the biggest thing for me, changing minds.” Many of the players look at the showcase and the ensuing camp as an opportunity to serve as inspirations. Larry Alcime said: “We expect to perform very well, we’re working hard and we want to come out and have fun. I loved seeing the kids chase the balls down even as they went into the water, so seeing everyone smile and come out and give so much support for a first time event.” DJ Collie added: “The kids were so excited, to see the smiles on their faces and even months later for them to continue to ask about it, just to see them inspired is like a dream come true.” Keithron Moss participated last year, just weeks after signing with the Texas Rangers organisation. “For me it was about having fun, going out there and showcasing our talent,” he said. “As the youngest player I just was trying to learn as much as I can.” Proceeds from the event will benefit the Cancer Society of the Bahamas, the Sister Sister Breast Cancer Support Group and the development of youth baseball in the Bahamas. “The lineup has grown a lot. It speaks volumes to where our young men are developing in this sport of

baseball,” event promoter Todd Isaacs Sr said. “The non-profit organisations will be set up on there to give out information or if you want to volunteer and find a way to become involved. We have also invited both JBLN and Freedom Farm to set up tents and give information to any interested persons. At this level it’s not about comp anymore, our boys are representing us, the Bahamian people. This event gives you a chance to see the level they are at. “Our boys are competing and our ranked very high in baseball so they deserve our support. We didn’t know what to expect last year and the vibe was just great. We want to make it bigger and inspire the young kids and that’s really what this is about. It’s very good that our kids can come out and talk and touch these guys and learn how they did this. We can actually see the doors being opened in Major League Baseball.” The title sponsor REV will broadcast the event live and will simulcast live on its Facebook page. “REV is truly pleased to partner with Todd, Lucius and their team for the second annual Don’t Blink Home Run Derby. Baseball players never get to showcase their talent on the island, but last year we got to showcase how much our hard work has paid off,” Fox said. “I remember telling kids I never dreamt of seeing the places I’ve seen or meeting the people I’ve met and it’s all been because of baseball. We just want to give every young kid coming up behind us every opportunity and I think the Bahamian people are opening up their eyes to baseball even more.”
