ommy Fleetwood may have several reasons to celebrate here in the Bahamas if he continues the torrid pace he set on the course on day one of the Hero World World Challenge. Fleetwood leads the field of 18 elite PGA Tour members when he shot a 66 (-6) yesterday at the Albany Golf Course. He birdied holes No. 3, 4, 7, 9 14 and 15 on the afternoon. “I played really well, got off to a nice start. The first five holes I hit a lot of good shots and felt like I had a good rhythm and a couple birdies early on. Just carried on really. The front nine, 4 under on the front nine is a good start to the day,” he said. “Just played solid. I didn’t make a bogey and

The Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources, in conjunction with the Star Sailors League, will host the second annual Best-ofThe-Best Regatta at the Montagu Bay foreshore December 7-10. The regatta’s aim is to showcase the best of the best in each sailing class - A, B and C - and also help to catapult Bahamian sloop sailing into the international arena. The event promises a family atmosphere complete with amenities traditionally associated with Bahamian regattas. Minister of Agriculture and Marine Resources Renward Wells, whose portfolio includes responsibilities for regattas, outlined the impact that he expects the regatta will have. “Last year’s event established the bar for what regattas could be in The Bahamas and by every measure, we are on pace, by far, to surpass the standard set in our event, he said. “We are confirmed to have more than 50 boats participating in the A, B and C classes. We have done our best to ensure that the level of participation lives up to the name ‘Best of the Best.’ I have spoken to quite a few of the boat owners and captains and will continue to talk to them as we prepare for what may well be the most competitive weekend of sloop sailing in the history of The Bahamas. I fully anticipate this will be a clash of the champions come next Thursday.” The regatta will also bridge the gap between sports tourism and local sports development, with the inclusion of the Star Sailors League which has hosted the finale of its circuit in the Bahamas for the past three years. “Speaking of champions, I am pleased that we will also be hosting the yearend race event for the Star Sailor’s League as well. Sailors from around the world have begun arriving and training in Montagu Harbour for what too will be a very competitive race. Tiger Woods returns with solid round and good start at Albany NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) — Tiger Woods looked a lot better in his return to golf than he did when he left. Playing for the first time since his fourth back surgery, Woods returned from a 10-month layoff with a 3-under 69 on a breezy Thursday in the Bahamas that left him three shots behind Tommy Fleetwood after the opening round of the Hero World Challenge. “For me, I thought I did great,” Woods said with a smile. And in a sign that he was ready to get back into the mix, he was far from satisfied. Unlike a year ago, when Woods ended a 15-month hiatus from his ailing back, he didn’t show any fatigue at the end of his round or make any big numbers. His only regret was playing the par 5s at Albany Golf Club in 1-over par with two bogeys that stalled his momentum. Coming off a 25-foot birdie putt on the par-3 eighth, Woods hit a 3-wood that rolled up on the green and then down a slope about 30 feet from the pin. It took him four shots from there, starting with a chip that didn’t reach the green and his first expletive loud enough for television to pick up. After his best shot of the day — a pitching wedge he hit low from 95 yards that settled a foot behind the hole for birdie on No. 14 — he sent a drive well to the right into the native dunes. On the heels of his appearance with the men’s national team in the FIBA World Cup Qualifiers Monday night, Livingston Munnings stepped back into NPBA play and powered the Rockets to a 103-70 win over the Leno Regulators. Munnings finished with 24 points, 13 rebounds, four assists and four blocked shots. Barry Carter posted another double double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, Eugene Bain added 16 points and nine rebounds, Selwyn McKenzie scored 15 and Lerecus Armbrister added 13 points and five steals. Kenneth Pratt was the lone bright spot for the Regulators and the only player to score in double figures with 29 points and nine rebounds. He scored the first five points of the game, but the

Rockets responded with a 17-0 run to take control. Tomeko Moxey’s three pointer was the last field goal of the run to take a 17-5 lead, before Pratt ended his team’s nearly seven-minute drought with a layup. The Regulators closed the quarter with a run of their own and trimmed the deficit to just four headed into the second. They would go on to outscore the Regulators by 12 in the quarter and take control for good. Lyndrick Storr’s layup brought the Rockets’ lead back to 10 early in the second and they continued to dominate throughout. McKenzie’s three pushed the lead over 20 for the first time, 41-19 with just over four minutes left to play in the half. They took a 51-35 lead at the break and 78-54 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Rockets outscored the Regulators by 21 from beyond the arch, had a 10-point advantage on points in the paint and their bench also outscored their counterparts by 14. The Caro Contractors Resistance got a combined 45 points from Kamal Murphy and Qyemah Gibson in a 94-88 win over Eagle’s Nest. Murphy’s only blemish on his night was two missed free throws attempts as he shot a perfect 10-10 from the field en route to his 24 points. Gibson scored 21, Shaquille Outten added 16 while Cormado Seymour added eight points and 10 rebounds. Troy Trembley led Eagle’s Nest with a game high 26 points and eight rebounds, Bradley Altidor scored 21 and Janaldo Joseph chipped in with 12. Eagles Nest led 18-9 early in the first quarter before the Resistance

closed the period on a 16-0 run. Outten’s jumpshot as time expired gave them a 25-18 lead after one. The run continued in the second and reached as much as 26 unanswered points when they opened on a 10-0 spurt to take a 35-18 lead on Gibson’s jumper. Bradley Taylor’s score sparked a 13-point run to get back into the game. Uriah Rolle’s jumper made the score 31-35 with 8:48 left to play in the period. The Resistance took a 45-40 lead at the half. The lead reached as much as 14 in the second half and Eagles Nest was unable to come within less than three possessions. In tonight’s matchups at the AF Adderley Gymnasium, the Resistance return to action when they face Elites Basketball Club and in Division I, the Island Game Pros take on the JD’s Seafood Shockers.

Bain, Cornish and Ayton shine in NCAA Division I By RENALDO DORSETT Tribune Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net BAHAMIAN play in NCAA Division I basketball this week was highlighted by breakout games from players working themselves into the rotation with their new programmes. Charles Bain scored in double figures for the first time in his collegiate career for the Robert Morris Colonials, Jaron Cornish had a career high assist game for the Stony Brook Sea Wolves and DeAndre Ayton (see story below) was perfect from the field as the Arizona Wildcats ended

a three-game losing streak. Bain scored 10 points in the Colonials’ 81-74 win over the Youngstown State Penguins Wednesday night. The freshman forward finished 4-7 from the field and his layup with 9:01 left to play in the second half sparked an 8-0 run for his team and regained the lead for good. “We came out with really great energy to start the second half, but it has to be consistent and for the full 20 minutes,” head coach Andrew Toole said. “Charles Bain also gave us some really good minutes in the second half.” Bain committed to the Colonials in April out of St John’s

Northwestern Military Academy in Delafield, Wisconsin. He is a part of a major roster overhaul for Robert Morris which includes a recruiting class featuring five freshman, a pair of junior college transfers, a transfer that will have to sit out this season due to NCAA transfer rules and two graduate transfers. Cornish dished nine assists and added four steals off the bench in 20 minutes in the Seawolves’ 101-58 win over Shawnee State Wednesday night. “I was really happy with our effort,” said Stony Brook head coach Jeff Boals. “Coming in to the game, our goal was to

compete for 40 minutes and play hard. I thought we had a really good practice yesterday leading into the game, and I was pleased with the result.” It continued a productive week for Cornish after he finished with eight points, five rebounds and five assists in an 85-76 loss to Bucknell. The junior guard transferred to Stony Brook after completing two NJCAA seasons with the Broward College Seahawks in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. After three losses in the Bahamas at the Battle 4 Atlantis that prompted their plummet from out of the top 25 rankings, the

Wildcats got back in the win column with a 91-56 win over Long Beach State Wednesday night. Ayton was a perfect 6-6 from the field, including his only three point attempt and finished with 13 points and nine rebounds. He nearly posted a double-double in the first half with 10 points and eight rebounds as the Wildcats fed him the ball early and often. After shooting a combined 10 of 54 (.185) from beyond the arc in last week’s three games in the Bahamas, Arizona finished Wednesday evening 12 of 22 (.545) from deep.

ARIZONA STILL SEARCHING FOR CONSISTENT DEFENSIVE INTENSITY By JOHN MARSHALL AP Basketball Writer TUCSON, Arizona (AP) — Arizona freshman Brandon Randolph watched the ball rotate to his side of the floor and was late getting out to a shooter on the wing. The Long Beach State player made the open shot and Randolph jogged back on offense. Wildcats coach Sean Miller saw the play unfold and turned a dark shade of red. “What is he doing?!” Miller screamed to one of his assistants, his voice cracking from yelling so loud. “What is he doing?!” The Wildcats returned from a dismal trip to the Bahamas to beat Long Beach State by 35 points Wednesday night. Arizona had six players score in double figures, shot 60 per cent and made 12 3-pointers. All Miller wanted to talk about afterward was the lack of effort he saw on defence; failing to rotate out on shooters, getting beat off the dribble, lack of help and rim protection, not hustling back after a missed shot or a made basket.

“We’ve had our moments over the last six, seven years where you watch a group (let down), but I don’t know if I’ve seen a group that can’t bring it, can’t work, can’t really fight defensively,” Miller said. “Man, is it disappointing.” Arizona’s season started under a dark cloud after assistant coach Emanuel Richardson was arrested as part of a federal investigation into bribes and kickbacks in college basketball recruiting. Richardson is no longer with the programme, but an air of uncertainty hangs over Arizona and could remain for the rest of the season. The Wildcats’ performance on the court, meanwhile, has done nothing to distract fans from it. Arizona (4-3) managed to overcome its defensive deficiencies to win its first three games. There were breakdowns, but doing it against Northern Arizona, UMBC and Cal State-Bakersfield did not hurt the Wildcats. The NBA’s most improved player last year also issued a warning of sorts to his teammates. “We can’t hide now,” Antetokounmpo said after scoring 19 of his 32 points in the third quarter of Millwaukee’s 112-87 win over the Sacramento Kings on Tuesday night. “We did it today, we played really hard defensively so we have to keep doing that. No excuses as a team.” Buddy Hield, in 21 minutes on the court, scored 13 points, including a threepointer. He also grabbed two rebounds and had a steal, shooting 2-2 from the free throw line and 5-10 (50 per cent) from field-goal range. The Bucks have been erratic at times on both ends of the court this season and had dropped three of four before jumping on the Kings early. Milwaukee coach Jason Kidd credited his team’s defence but also praised the offence. The Bucks shot 59 per cent with 26 assists. “There was nothing that was forced,” Kidd said. “The ball moved, we didn’t hold it, we didn’t back down, we didn’t dribble 10 times to take a shot. He singled out JacksonCartwright, a senior, on Wednesday night for not setting the defensive tone consistently. “We need a couple of our veterans, we need guys who have been here and done it before to really embody the qualities of playing hard, playing together, being in the right spot,” Miller said. Arizona could add the hard-working, emotional player it needs soon. Sophomore guard Rawle Alkins, a physical, highenergy player, broke his foot during preseason practices and has yet to play this season. He is closer to being cleared and could provide the Wildcats a big lift when he returns. “He’s a really big part of our team,

bigger than maybe any of us realised because there’s such a drop off emotionally, there’s such a drop off physically without him,” Miller said. Even when Alkins does return, there will be an adjustment period. So for the Wildcats to get better now and after Alkins returns, they’ll need more consistent contributions from their highly touted freshmen. Deandre Ayton, a potential top-five NBA draft pick next summer, has been steady all season, averaging 19.3 points and 11.6 rebounds while creating match-up nightmares for opponents. The rest of the freshmen have played well at times, not so well others. “When I was watching the Bahamas games, I can only watch the TV copy and I kept seeing the No. 3 recruiting class in the country pop up on the screen like 75 times,” Miller said. “I find myself saying, where’d you go?’” The Wildcats need them to show up and find some kind of defensive spark. They play at UNLV on Saturday, Texas A&M in Phoenix next week.

Prescott, Cowboys top Redskins 38-14 By SCHUYLER DIXON Associated Press ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys finally found a way to win without suspended star running back Ezekiel Elliott. The question is whether the defending NFC East champions figured it out in time to salvage their fading playoff hopes. Prescott threw two touchdown passes, including a franchise record-breaker to Dez Bryant, and the Cowboys beat the Washington Redskins 38-14 last night. Prescott, last year’s NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, shook off a hand injury and found Bryant on a 13-yard leaping grab in the end zone for the 2014 All-Pro’s first score in six games and 72nd of his career, one more than Hall of Famer Bob Hayes. The Cowboys (6-6) started quickly thanks to three first-half turnovers and four overall by the Redskins (5-7) and kept it going after halftime with a 21-7 scoring edge after getting outscored 72-6 in the second half of three straight losses without Elliott. Alfred Morris, Elliott’s replacement during the six-game suspension for alleged domestic violence, had 127 yards rushing and a clinching touchdown.
