Cantlay, a California native who played his collegiate golf at UCLA, has pledged to donate his earnings from the tournament - $500 per birdie – to victims of the California wildfires through “California Strong.” “That’s a shocker. Executives eager to launch Handball Federation By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net BACK in 2013, the Bahamas Handball Federation was formed after Wellington Miller, then president of the Bahamas Olympic Committee, returned from a meeting in Mexico and the president of the International Handball Federation wanted to spread the sport out to countries in the Americas and Caribbean region. Although they have met and held coaches’ courses here in the Bahamas for beach handball in 2014, Miller said the executive board, headed by himself, is now complete and they are eager to officially launch the BHF to the public.

Yesterday, he introduced the executive board to the media. Working along with Miller, who also serves as the administrator and chief executive officer, are Lawrence Hepburn as first vice president, Rupert Gardiner as second vice president, Sean Bastian as secretary general and Dawn Knowles as treasurer/finance and funding. “Sometimes you might be as good in the other sports, so we want to open up avenues and give more opportunities for our young people to participate in sports and at the same time obtain athletic scholarships to top colleges and universities. It’s a new sport. It’s very fast and very

Here’s a summary: Mingoes 87, Shockers 84 Kemsy Sylvestre led the Mingoes with 25 points to go along with 13 rebounds and three blocks on the night for the University of the Bahamas squad that now moves to 4-0 in division one of the league. The Shockers fell to 1-3. Ramon Dames scored 13, Justin Smith 12 and Christoff McKenzie 11 for the Mingoes in the win. Adam Johnson led the Shockers with 16 points and 15 rebounds in the loss. THE 33rd edition of the Father Marcian Peters Basketball Classic is set to tip off in just over a week, featuring some of the top primary, junior and intermediate programmes. Dozens of teams spread across six divisions will vie for their respective titles December 7-15 at the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium. To date, over 60 teams have registered for the week-long event, to be hosted by the Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Culture. A total of 12 primary boys, five primary girls, 16 junior boys, five junior girls, 13 intermediate boys and 10 senior girls’ teams comprise the field. In 2017, there were new champions in each division. In the primary girls’ division, the Temple Christian Suns continued to dominate the group with another tournament title when they defeated the Catholic School champions St Thomas Moore 17-15. On the primary boys’ side, the Teleos Cherubims defeated the St Francis and Joseph Shockers 21-17. The Jordan Prince William Falcons junior girls had the most lopsided win of any championship title game with a 28-6 win over Freedom Baptist. Contrastingly, the junior boys’ division had the closest finish of any title game when the DW Davis Royals got a late field goal as time expired to defeat the Falcons 36-34.

FERGUSON AND BEARCATS ARE ASSURED A BOWL GAME By RENALDO DORSETT Tribune Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net CHRIS Ferguson and the Cincinnati Bearcats are assured a bowl game this postseason and many pundits are speculating where the ‘Cats will end up when the full slate of games are unveiled this weekend. Cincinnati finished the season 10-2, 6-2 in the American Athletic Conference after winning a combined eight games the last two seasons. It was their first 10-win season since 2012. They await the results of the AAC Championship game between No.8 UCF and Memphis for their final placement in the conference and bowl selection. PATRICK REED MOVING ON FROM RYDER CUP, SHARES BAHAMAS LEAD By DOUG FERGUSON AP Golf Writer NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) — Patrick Reed and Tiger Woods are about as far apart as can be on the leaderboard after one round of the Hero World Challenge. Only they know how close they are after the Ryder Cup fallout. Reed showed no sign of fatigue in his travels from Dubai to Hong Kong to the Bahamas in successive weeks, making birdie on three of his last five holes yesterday for a 7-under 65 and a share of the lead with late-entry Patrick Cantlay. Woods was never under par at any point and opened with a 73, eight shots behind, tied for 16th in an 18-man field.

Reed’s comments after Europe won the Ryder Cup still follow him. In a phone interview with The New York Times hours after the loss, Reed blamed Jordan Spieth for them not playing together, US captain Jim Furyk for twice leaving him on the bench and he made it sound as though he was stuck with Woods as a partner in Paris. “We spoke after the Ryder Cup for a long period of time,” Woods said. “We talked among us and it will stay between us.” This is one time Reed held his tongue. After his eighth and final birdie in balmy weather at Albany Golf Club, he acknowledged nothing more than they had talked. “Whatever I talk about with other players and

He also said he hasn’t spoken to Furyk, and Reed told the New York Post on Tuesday that he hasn’t spoken to Spieth, but that Spieth has his number. “It’s been I don’t know how many weeks (since the Ryder Cup), but in the golf world, it’s been a long time,” Reed said. “All of us on our side have moved past that. Basically, when the tournament was over, all of us moved past it and we’re just kind of getting ready for hopefully two years.” But there’s a Presidents Cup in between, next December in Australia, and while the intensity is not the same, the team concept is intact. And it could get even more awkward considering Woods is the captain. “I don’t think anything needs to be resolved,” Reed said. Reed is used to going about life is own way, and he’s not about to made any apologies. He just wants to play good golf, and there was plenty of that on a day that allowed for low scoring. All but three players were at par or better. Woods was not one of them. His return to tournament competition didn’t start nearly as well as his last one ended. The World Challenge is his first 72-hole event since he won the Tour Championship at East Lake on September 23, the end of a remarkable comeback season from a fourth back surgery that signalled Woods was capable of winning again. Woods has been battling a fever. He says his ankles were sore from wear and tear, an issue he says has been around for a few months. On the golf course, he didn’t hit it close enough or make enough putts,

Woods made consecutive birdies to get back to even par, and then it came undone on the par-3 12th when his tee shot went left, just inside a hazard line but still in play. But the chip came out short, rolled down the bank and past his feet into the water. He took a penalty drop, got it on the green and missed the putt to take triple bogey. “I had a little patch right behind the golf ball and I tried to toe it in there in trying to make sure I actually hit it long,” Woods said. “It just didn’t come out, and it blew back in the hazard.”

What happens this week is of little consequence. Most players, except for European Tour members who two weeks ago finished the Race to Dubai, haven’t played in a month and won’t play for another month when the new year starts in Hawaii. Reed was an exception. He is playing his 30th event of the year, which includes the Ryder Cup. He was runner-up in Dubai and middle-of-the-pack in Hong Kong, arrived in the Bahamas and found his swing in good order. Cantlay hasn’t played since a 63-65 weekend in Las Vegas on November 4. He was planning to take the rest of the year off, especially after going to Miami

the following week to have sinus surgery, giving him a couple of weeks without a club in his hand. He had never been to the Bahamas, much less Albany, but figured out how to score. Cantlay’s big finish began with a 9-iron out of the waste area to 5 feet on the 13th. He also atoned for a bad drive on the par-5 15th by making a 25-footer, and he holed a 20-foot birdie putt on the 17th before finishing with a 9-iron to 12 feet. He had the only bogeyfree round, and better yet, made seven birdies. Cantlay and Jon Rahm are donating $500 for every birdie this week to “California Strong” to help those affected by the wildfires.

I mean, there are a couple different fires and seeing just the whole towns getting wiped out. Just doing a little bit to help, I felt like I could do it and I’m happy to help.” After he finished the front nine at -2, Cantlay birdied holes 13-15, 17 and 18 to finish the afternoon. “The golf course played much different today obviously with no wind or little wind compared to [the Pro-Am round]. Greens are really fast, and so I got going a little bit with the putter and made some putts,” he said. “I think anytime you can play against the best players in the world, and this field’s obviously small but it’s really, really strong, anytime you can do that and test your skills against the best in the world, I think it makes you a better golfer.”

In his last PGA Tour start at the Shriners, Cantlay racked up 26 birdies, second-most in the field. Following that event he took several weeks off following deviated septum and sinus surgeries. “I would be resting, I probably wouldn’t be playing golf, but I’m glad I’m here. I was looking forward to -- I knew I was on the edge for a while, so I was hopeful that I would get in and fortunately I did,” he said. “Still trying to figure out the golf course. So I feel like I know it little better after today and really looking forward to playing the rest of the three days. It’s a fun event, Tiger’s a great host and I’m happy to be here.” Reed birdied the first two holes of the day and recovered from his lone bogie of the day on eight to birdie hole nine for a lead at -3. Reed followed with another four birdies on the back

nine, including No.18 to tie Cantlay. “I went out there and did what I had to do. Kind of coming into today I felt like I was hitting the ball pretty solid. My coach and I, I was able to kind of get him in town this week and kind of fine-tuned some things compared to Dubai and Hong Kong, to kind of get him in town when it’s supposed to be windy, and when the wind dies down you have to attack this place, you have to make birdies,” Reed said. “To kind of putt the way like I

felt I did today as well as hit the ball and flight the ball how I wanted to was very positive because that was the biggest thing for today is, even though the wind was down, if you’re playing from a high window, then when the wind starts blowing, can you control your ball. I felt like I was able to play out of the windows I needed to today to shoot a low one.” Reed has three previous top five finishes at Hero, tied for third in 2014, second in 2015 and tied for fifth in 2017.

“I love the place, I love the golf course, and any way to support Tiger as well as support the Hero Challenge is something I want to do. I mean, my first time ever playing at Isleworth, played pretty solid there and I was able to play with Tiger that year. Then after that I’ve always wanted to make it in the event, tried to come out and play because it’s also a fun spot,” he said. “You know, last event of the year, kind of one of those kind of relaxing type events. Only have 18 guys, but at the same time it allows you to kind of get in that mode of seeing how your game is for the four weeks you’re going to have off until Hawaii.” Henrik Stenson and Dustin Johnson are tied for third at 68 (-4) while Alex Noren and Bubba Watson are tied for fifth at 69 (-3). Tiger Woods struggled on day one and is tied at No.16, 73 (+1). He double bogeyed No.12 but birdied two of his final four holes (15 and 18).

“I didn’t quite feel comfortable with my game today even though I drove it great. It was definitely reflective in my scoring today, I didn’t quite feel comfortable and just didn’t quite hit the ball close enough or give myself a lot of looks at it. It’s been a long last week or so. At least this tournament’s now started and we’ve got it underway, now I’m back into the rhythm of playing again, which is nice,” Woods said. “I would like to hit the ball a little bit closer than I did today. I didn’t hit the ball very close, and today was probably the easiest it’s going to be the entire week and I didn’t take advantage of these pretty benign conditions.” Woods and Hero 2016 champion Hideki Matsuyama will be the first pairing in the field to tee off this morning at 11:15am. Cantlay and Reed will be the final pair to tee off at 12:43pm.

Baseball needs to be played at the senior level again in the Bahamas THE performance of the under18 men’s national baseball team to the Pan American Baseball Confederation Championships in Panama showed what could and should be done under the newly alligned Bahamas Baseball Association. The BBA, which saw the reamalgamation of all of the local associations and clubs under one umbrella, took its first national team off to compete in the championships last week. It was the first true representation of the national team that travelled in quite a few years. While the results were not what they anticipated, head of delegation Marvin ‘Tougie’ Wood said it is encouraging as they look ahead to the future. He assured the public that the team, which played without any of the professional players, would be able to at least make the playoffs if they get the opportunity to return to the tournament next year. Sounds good. I quite agree. We have the talent, but as he also pointed out, it’s impossible to get the maximum out of the team if the players coming together from Grand Bahama and Abaco only get to practice a couple days before they travel.

Gone are those days of putting the team together at the last minute and hoping that they will gel and perform at their best on the international scene. The BBA will have to find a way to ensure that the team is assembled months in advance and all efforts must be made for them to practice as a cohesive unit. Hopefully, the new national baseball stadium will also be completed next year so that the association can utilise the proper playing field because I’m sure it was a cultural shock for those players who would have played in the venue that they did for the first time. And although the BBA said their concentration would only be on the selection of the national team, they need to provide an avenue for the players to participate in a senior league programme. These same under-18 players are going to be the future of the sport and in order for them to be able to compete at their best when they travel, they need to play more

games. The Bahamas Association of Independent Secondary Schools is not playing baseball and the Government Secondary Schools Sports Association has a season with just a handful of games. Thank goodness for Freedom Farm and the Junior Baseball League of Nassau, who provide an opportunity for the older players to participate in a senior league programme. But even those games are not sufficient. There has to be a lot more games played in order for our teams to reach their ultimate performances whenever they get the opportunity to travel again. Whether or not we have the professional players available or not, baseball just needs to be played in the Bahamas at the senior level again. Seymour giving back For all those persons who have followed Anfernee Seymour’s career to the professional ranks, you would know that it was not an easy one. But it’s so encouraging to see that despite all that he went through, Seymour has found the time to give back to help those young baseball players who are looking up to him and other pro players.

This weekend, Seymour will be hosting his first baseball camp at Freedom Farm in Yamacraw on Saturday and Sunday. It’s the place where he got to hone his skills before he left St Augustine’s College to complete his high school at American Heritage in Delray Beach, Florida. Now with the Miami Marlins’ organisation, Seymour is one of about 20 players who are playing minor league baseball. But he’s putting on the clinic to help develop some more players to follow in their footsteps. Not many players take the time to come back and give back to the sport. Seymour is one of those players that does and his efforts must be commended. He’s also providing an opportunity for girls to develop their skills in softball with American Olympian Natasha Watley joining in to share her expertise in the sport. Just as the young ball players need some more assistance in baseball, Watley is coming to provide that for the female softball players. The clinic is scheduled to start at 10am on Saturday and 12:30pm on Sunday. It’s something that local baseball and softball players should take advantage of. Well done Anfernee Seymour.

NPBA: Rockets top High Flyers 93-87 By RENALDO DORSETT Tribune Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net THE Sun Oil Rockets scored an early-season win over the defending Division II champions in the New Providence Basketball Association. Crosley Wilmore led the Rockets with 22 points while Bertrum Minnis posted a double double with 19 points and 13 rebounds in the Rockets’ 93-87 win over the Breezes High Flyers. Cameron Chery scored 15 while Craig Gibson scored 11 for the Rockets. The High Flyers missed 20 free throws and

shot just 26-46 from the line, while the Rockets converted 23 on 33 attempts. Dave Davis led the High Flyers with 18 points and 11 rebounds, Jeremy Neely scored 16 and Davonte Gibson added another double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Clinging to a two-point lead with less than a minute left in the fourth quarter, Chery made jumpers on consecutive possessions to seal the Rockets win. The Rockets led 70-64 early in the fourth, but the High Flyers went on a 9-2 run to take the lead. A Hank Davis jumper gave his team a 73-72 lead near

the eight-minute mark and he followed with a layup on the ensuing possession to go ahead by four. Their lead reached as much as seven on a Gibson free throw (81-74). Crispin Gibson capped a Rockets run with a three pointer to regain the Rockets lead 86-85 with two minutes left. Breezes were outscored 7-2 down the stretch. A poor shooting night from both teams, the Rockets were at just 37 per cent and 25 per cent from threepoint range. The High Flyers shot 41 per cent and just 15 per cent from beyond the arc.

So we’re hoping that we can get it into the schools and hopefully at the university level.” With Knowles, who is in charge of the Primary Schools Sports Association for the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Gardiner, as a member of the Government Secondary Schools Sports Association and Bastian, a member of the athletic team at the University of the Bahamas, all on board, Miller said they are on the right track to achieving their goal. “We have already put on seminars with coaches here and we intend to do more next year,” he said. “We have a good management team put together and so we could do a lot of things.” Hepburn has attended a series of meetings with the international body and he said they are looking to implement a lot of the programmes that they have received in pushing the sport forward here. “Many of those initiatives will help us to grow the sport more rapidly,” Hepburn said. “Some of those initiatives are the invitation of other countries to come here and assist us with coaching courses and to allow our athletes to go into their countries so that they can develop their skills in handball. “So those things, along with the newly developed North American Team Handball Federation, will assist us more quickly in getting more equipment and other resources for the development of the sport. Recently, we had the separation in the Pan American Team Handball Federation and the Bahamas is now a part of the Northern Division, so we look to receive more readily support from

the international body to help us.” In February, Hepburn revealed that the BHF will host another clinic, through the assistance of the regional body, to help them push the sport forward. “We are going to be recriting teams because the Bahamas has been welcomed to bring their teams to the international community,” Hepburn stated. “Thery’re not concerned about how many teams we have. They just want to see our participation and so the Bahamas is being welcomed to bring their teams. “So we are going to be reaching out to the community as early as January for the formation of national teams. I think this is a good way to go. “As you would recognise, this thing starts from the ground go up. This is from the federation level. So we are working our way down to the formation of associations and get more people exposed to the sport so that we can grow it.” As one of the most exciting sports, according to Hepburn, who pointed out that it’s not the one where players knock the ball against the wall, but rather it’s team handball where there are more players involved. He said it’s considered to be one of the most exciting sports to participate in Europe and it’s growing fast in the United States. He said he just returned from a meeting in Chicago where the newly formed United States Handball Association has agreed to provide some assistance to the Bahamas in getting the sport up and running here. “We’re receiving more attention now because this region is behind in getting its programme up and running,” Hepburn said. Hepburn said they hosted a camp in the summer

CBS Sports (Southern Mississippi) and Athlon Sports (Duke) projects the Bearcats to play in the Gasparilla Bowl, December 20 in Tampa, Florida. Ferguson, a 6’5” 303pound senior offensive lineman, won the starting job at right tackle in the offseason and went on to start 11 games. He was also one of 10 members of the Bearcats football team to earn his degree (criminal justice) last April. As a freshman, he was initially recruited as a threestar recruit on the defensive line, following his senior season at Lake Nona High School in Orlando, Florida, when he recorded 17 total tackles, one sack, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. After a redshirt true freshman season, he shifted to the offensive line but did not see playing time in the 2015-17 seasons.

Leonard scores 37, Raptors beat Warriors 131-128 in OT By IAN HARRISON Associated Press TORONTO (AP) — Kawhi Leonard scored a season-high 37 points, Pascal Siakam added a career-high 26 and the Toronto Raptors overcame a 51-point performance from Kevin Durant to beat the Golden State Warrirors 131-128 in overtime on Thursday night, extending their winning streak to seven. Kyle Lowry had 10 points and 12 assists, Serge Ibaka scored 20 points and Danny Green had 13 as the Raptors snapped an eightgame losing streak against Golden State and won a contest billed as a potential NBA Finals preview. Toronto improved its league-leading record to 19-4. Durant scored 40 or more in three straight for the first time, finishing with his highest total of the season. He also had 11 rebounds and six assists. Klay Thompson scored 23 points and Jonas Jerebko had 16 of his 20 in the fourth quarter and overtime, but Golden State lost

to Toronto for the first time since March 2014. Lowry’s 3-pointer with 55 seconds to go in the fourth quarter put the Raptors up 119-113 but Durant replied with back-to-back 3s of his own, including a game-tying shot with 8.6 seconds left. Kevin Durant will gladly accept that a jump ball he tipped away against Willie Cauley-Stein in the waning moments meant nearly as much as all those jumpers and free throws he hit in a sensational scoring performance. Cowboys stifle Drew Brees 13-10, end Saints’ 10-game win streak By SCHUYLER DIXON AP Pro Football Writer ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Ezekiel Elliott scored the only Dallas touchdown and the Cowboys stifled Drew Brees and the Saints, ending New Orleans’ 10-game winning streak with a 13-10 victory last night. The Cowboys (7-5) won their fourth consecutive game and assured they will at least remain tied for the NFC East lead. The Saints (10-2) were shut out in the first half had a season low in points while missing on a chance to perfectly match Dallas from two years ago, when thenrookie sensations Elliott and quarterback Dak Prescott won 11 straight after dropping the opener. Brees had his fewest yards passing in a half since joining the Saints in 2006 with 39, and couldn’t get a potential winning drive going in the final minutes. Instead, Jourdan Lewis’ interception — just the third of the season for Brees — gave the Cowboys a chance to run out the clock from the New Orleans 1 after an interference penalty in the end zone. The Cowboys tried to play keepaway from the NFL’s highest-scoring offence late in the fourth quarter, with Prescott desperately scrambling 11 yards for a first down on third-and-10 and Cole Beasley catching a third-down pass and diving for 5 yards on third-and-5. But Prescott fumbled on a sack with Dallas in position for a field goal, giving Brees another chance from his 15 with more than two minutes remaining. On the second play, though, Brees threw where

he expected a receiver to be but Jordan was the only on there. He dove forward, just keeping the ball off the ground. Marshon Lattimore was called for interference against Amari Cooper in the end zone, giving Dallas a first down at the 1 with 1:58 remaining. The Cowboys just enough time to end the game, with the play clock matching the game clock after Prescott took a knee for the third time. Brees was 18 of 28 for 127 yards, actually the second straight game and third overall under 200 yards for the MVP contender. The only touchdown drive for the Saints was aided by three first downs on Dallas penalties. The biggest was Randy Gregory’s roughing-thepunt penalty on Thomas Morstead. Two plays later, Brees dropped a deep throw to a backpedaling Keith Kirkwood in the end zone for a 30-yard score to get New Orleans within 13-10. Prescott had 194 of his 248 yards passing while helping the Cowboys to a 13-0 halftime lead — the first scoreless first half for the Saints since 2014 and their first deficit in five games. The Cowboys held the ball for more than 21 minutes in the first half, but settled for field goals twice. The only touchdown was a 16-yard screen pass to Elliott. Trailing 10-0 in the second quarter, coach Sean Payton went for it on fourth-and-goal from the 1 and chose a handoff to Alvin Kamara. He was stuffed, and the Cowboys kept the ball another nine minutes to get a field goal.

STEVENSON LOOKS FOR KNOCKOUT VS GVOZDYK IN WBC TITLE FIGHT QUEBEC CITY (AP) — Canadian Adonis Stevenson says he needs “just one punch” to defeat Oleksandr Gvozdyk, while the Ukrainian believes the long game will lead to victory. They’ll fight for the WBC light heavyweight championship on Saturday at the Videotron Centre. Defending champion Stevenson (29-1-1, 24 KO) knows undefeated Gvozdyk (15-0-0, 12 KO) will be a tough opponent. “He’s hungry, he will want to go far in the boxing match,” Stevenson said yesterday at a news conference. “But as the fight goes into the late rounds, he will become tired because I will be hitting him hard.” The 41-year-old Stevenson said he’ll be going for the knockout, a strategy endorsed by trainer Sugar Hill Steward, nephew of the legendary Emanuel Steward. “I love knockouts,” Steward said. “No disrespect to the other fighters, but my late uncle always said, ‘Don’t leave anything to the judges,’ so that is why Adonis will be going for the knockout.” Stevenson’s last fight was May 19 in Toronto, when the bout ended in the champion’s favour after a majority draw against Sweden’s Badou Jack. The Bills (4-7) have won two games in a row to stoke enthusiasm about their long-term outlook with rookie quarterback Josh Allen, while the Dolphins (5-6) have lost two straight and six of eight to sour their season. Both teams will likely be playoff spectators, as usual, but there will be a stark contrast in moods when the longtime rivals square off Sunday. • Here are things to know about the 109th game between the Bills and Dolphins, and the first of two meetings in December: TRENDING The Bills have a shot at only their second threegame winning streak since September 2011. They’ve gained more than 300 yards in each of the past two games after failing to do so in the first six. And they finished strong last week, scoring twice in the fourth quarter to beat Jacksonville 24-21. That made the Bills 2-1 in one-score games.
