he 2018 Hero World Challenge tees off today with several compelling storylines to follow, including the host’s return as a legitimate contender, an Albany resident having one of the best seasons of his career and the defending champion’s bid to repeat following last year’s record-setting final round. For the fourth consecutive year, the $3.5 million Hero World Challenge will be hosted at the Albany resort and continues through Sunday. The event traditionally features 18 of the top golfers on the PGA Tour. Tournament host Tiger Woods will again be the

primary focus of the international golf community following last month’s return to the pinnacle of the sport when he won the Tour Championship. The win was the 80th tour title for Woods – but his first since August 2013. Woods comes into this event ranked No.13, while less than a year ago he was ranked No. 1,199 following his spinal fusion surgery and a host of other operations. “Well, one of the great things about the Bahamas is for us to come down here, enjoy the weather, come down here and enjoy just the scenery, the clear water. It’s just very relaxed and very laid back. I think anyone who’s come down here to experience Albany here in particular, everyone always enjoys it. The

week and we’re going to all have some fun.” Justin Rose, who currently holds the No. 2 position in the Official World Golf Ranking, headlines a field that also includes six players in the top 10. Rose, a native of England but resident at Albany, secured the overall FedEx Cup which determines the season-long PGA Tour champion. Rose called the tournament a showcase for golf in the Bahamas. “It’s a nice commute this week for sure, just jump in the golf cart and head up to the course. Obviously, I’ve seen the preparation, everyone’s worked really hard here for a couple months getting the course ready, getting this event ready. So

Ayton posts new milestones By RENALDO DORSETT Tribune Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net DEANDRE Ayton continues to post new milestones during his rookie season for the Phoenix Suns. Ayton finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds in the Suns’ 109104 loss to the Indiana Pacers at the Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix, Arizona, on Tuesday night. He became just the fourth player in the past 25 years to score at least 300 points and grab 200 rebounds in his first 20 NBA Games. Ayton joins fellow former No.1 overall picks Blake Griffin, Tim Duncan and Shaquille O’Neal on the list. Indiana led by as many as 13 points in the second and third quarters, but Phoenix used a 15-2 run late in the third and early in the fourth to go ahead. With the game tied at 101, the Pacers made two three pointers on their final three possessions to go ahead for good. “In the first half we weren’t putting that much resistance on them at first. They threw the first punch in the first half but we came back and threw one in the second half. We started competing against them and they were a lot more physical than we thought. It was a physical battle on the glass,” Ayton said. “We just needed to turn it up a notch to force them into other shots. We get better every game, we just have to figure it out. When we are starting we were getting blown out by 20 by half and now we’re starting to lockdown, conditioning is there now, we just have to finish out games. We knocked down some big shots out of the timeouts but defensively that’s where we have to get better,” he said. Ayton totalled 14 points and seven rebounds in the first half alone. “We have a young centre in Ayton, is going to have some ups and downs. He’s going to have some moments where he needs

Cornish matched a career high with 22 points in the Sea Wolves’ 79-73 win over the Norfolk State Spartans. The senior guard was an efficient 8-11 shooting from the field, including 3-5 from three-point range. He also added five rebounds and four assists in a team high 38 minutes on the floor. Stony Brook improved to 6-1 with its fifth road win of the season. “I’m really happy about the performance that Jaron put together. He was able to lead us down the stretch and to the win,” said Sea Wolves head coach Jeff Boals. “Really proud of the way the guys stepped up and do what they did in order to pull out this victory. We were able to take care of the ball in the second half and that was definitely key to us winning. We had to play some young guys and younger lineups and they

DESPITE the setback of the first major injury of her career, Bahamian basketball star Lashann Higgs remains in perspective as she prepares for the rehab process. “Not quite how I wanted my senior season to end but God knows best! Sometimes we may wonder why or try to understand why things happen but it’s important to know that God is in control,” Higgs posted on social media. “I will be back stronger and wiser than before. I’m so thankful for my teammates, family and friends and the support of you all! Like they say a small setback for a major comeback.” The Longhorns won the Gulf Coast Showcase tournament title, but suffered a major loss when Higgs went down with a knee injury in a hard-fought 56-55 win over Quinnipiac last Friday. She was diagnosed with a season-ending torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her left knee. Higgs went down late in the first half before being carried off the court by members of the Longhorns staff.

A year later, no surprises on what to expect from Tiger By DOUG FERGUSON AP Golf Writer NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) — Justin Thomas is paired with Tiger Woods in the Hero World Challenge for the second straight year, and just like last time, he has an idea what to expect from him. By now, so does everyone else. Woods was a mystery a year ago. He was No. 1,199 in the world ranking when he returned from a fourth back surgery, having competed in only one PGA Tour event since August 2015. Thomas had played golf with him at home in Florida and thought he looked great, a tough sell to those who hadn’t seen Woods. “The consistency wasn’t there,” Thomas said yesterday after his pro-am round at Albany Golf Club. “But the great shots — the ones that made you stop and think a second — were. The more we played, the more we saw it. I wasn’t going to say anything because you don’t know what’s going to happen and how he’s going to feel. But I thought if he stays healthy, I think he’s going to win this year. “First off, it’s him. You always feel like he’s going to do what people don’t expect, because that’s what he loves to do.” There are no surprises this year. Woods now is No. 13 in the world as he hosts this holiday tournament for the 20th time. It’s his first 72-hole tournament since he ended his remarkable comeback by winning the Tour Championship in late September for his 80th career PGA Tour victory. He twice contended at majors, taking a brief lead

(AP) Sunday in the British Open and challenging Brooks Koepka to the end at the PGA Championship. “Just being able to win a golf tournament again, considering where I was at this point last year and (before) that point, I think what I’ve accomplished this year has been pretty special,” Woods said. It’s another strong field at Albany with six of the top 10 in the world among

the 18 players. Missing is Koepka, the US Open and PGA champion who returned to No. 1 in the world this week, along with Jordan Spieth, who got married over the weekend in Texas. Francesco Molinari, the British Open champion and Ryder Cup star, also chose to take this year off, leaving Masters champion Patrick Reed as the only major champion in the field.

The unofficial event offers world ranking points, which matters most to Justin Rose because he has a chance to return to No. 1 in his see-saw battle with Koepka. The winner gets $1 million — everyone in the field earned at least $2.6 million on the PGA Tour this season. For Woods, it’s a chance to build on momentum going into 2019. “A guy like

Tiger, just give him a speck of confidence or a speck of just feeling good, anything can happen,” said Keegan Bradley, a late entry in the Bahamas when Tommy Fleetwood withdrew. “You can see that with Tiger, where he’s just such a good player. He’s going to get some momentum and he’ll do great.” Henrik Stenson was among those who hadn’t seen Woods in nearly a

year when he arrived at the World Challenge last year. They were paired in the second round, and Woods was hitting his drives alongside and often past the Swede. “I thought he was having a lot of speed when I saw him coming back here a year ago,” Stenson said. “I thought he was going after the ball very strongly and he hit it a long, long way. I didn’t really imagine him being able to go flat out like I thought he was at that point. He was obviously ready to play and ready to go after it at full speed.” Woods hasn’t figured out his schedule for next year, only that he’s thankful he won’t have to play as much at the end of the season like he did this year. Because he was a late qualifier for a World Golf Championship at Firestone, Woods wound up playing seven times in nine weeks, all of them big events in hot weather, ending with the super-intense Ryder Cup matches in France. That was one week after his emotional win at the Tour Championship, and he says he was drained. This season, the FedEx Cup playoffs eliminated one tournament, and the Presidents Cup is not until December. The biggest stretch he would face is the British Open and a World Golf Championship, a week off, and then three FedEx Cup playoff events. He ended a busy stretch last year by winning at East Lake, so he knows physically he’s up for it. “Now it’s just about managing and making sure I’m fresh for events,” Woods said, “because I know I can win tournaments again.”

Stenson splits with caddie, Thomas using friend for Hero World Challenge By DOUG FERGUSON AP Golf Writer NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) — Justin Thomas and Henrik Stenson have different caddies at the Hero World Challenge. Only one of them is temporary. Stenson said while caddie Gareth Lord is recovery from shoulder surgery, the two are taking a break. The Swede has hired Scott Vail for the Bahamas, and he plans to start the new year with him and see how it goes. Vail previously worked for Brandt Snedeker. “We’re in the dating stages,” Stenson said. Thomas gave Jimmy Johnson the week off from this holiday tournament and is using Cory Whitsett, a former teammate at Alabama. Whitsett said Thomas asked him about it a few weeks ago, and the only conflict would have been had Whitsett made it to the final stage of Web. com Tour qualifying next

I’ve had the fortune to play at home a few times. Playing at home is an interesting feeling for me personally. I’m not sure it’s an advantage really because there’s the off-course distraction that’s so different to your normal routine on Tour. “But generally playing in the Bahamas, obviously I think the golf course here at Albany they do a great job of getting it to championship spec, greens are super fast, obviously there’s always a challenge with the wind here. The ocean breeze makes it tricky and demanding, and this golf course is all about keeping it in play so when it gets windy, this course can play really, really tough. It’s nice to showcase the Bahamas

obviously, I know there’s so many different islands with different styles of golf courses all over, but there’s surprisingly good golf scattered around the Bahamas and it’s nice to showcase that.” Rickie Fowler is the tournament’s defending champion and shot a tournament record 61 in the final round last year to clinch the victory. “Always nice to be back. This is an event that you want to be a part of. That means you’ve done something right or consistently done things right to be [in this field]. I think it kind of goes around to the maybe low 20s in world ranking,” he said. “Yeah, it’s just a nice group to be a part of. Small field, nice way to kind of end the calendar year. And last year was a real nice way to end it, being seven back and birdieing the first seven holes, put myself back in a position to

go win. And unfortunately haven’t won since then, so need to win again and get things turned around for the rest of the year.” A repeat visitor to the Bahamas, Fowler said exploring the islands has been one of his top offseason pastimes. “It’s always great to be in the Bahamas. My fiancée and I, we spend some time up at Baker’s Bay, which isn’t too far from here up in the Abacos, so we get over to the Bahamas three, four times a year. We always enjoy coming here to Albany. As I was talking about earlier, it’s a nice way to end the calendar year. “Yeah, I don’t have anything bad to say about the Bahamas. It’s a nice place to come hang out, relax, and being that we’ve been here on Nassau, I’ve been to the Exumas once, spent time up in the Abacos. I love it. Wish I could get out to go fishing more, but we’ll be golfing this week.”

I-Elite directors Geron Sands and Albert Cartwright have partnered with Certified Athletic and Academic College Recruiter Kim Sweeting to form I-Recruit. I-Recruit will host an informational “Parent Night” at Evangelistic Temple 6:30pm November 30 to discuss relevant issues with prospective studentathletes and parents. While the group has consistently guided their I-Elite athletes to minor league contracts in recent years, they came to see the need for athletes to have the opportunity to also be able to attend the college or universities of their choice. I Recruit has reportedly partnered with several institutions in the United States and has a network of over 1,300 colleges and universities. “We use these relationships to personally communicate with the college coaches and get our I-Elite prospects identified and actively recruited. We know what college coaches are specifically looking for in upcoming recruiting classes,” according to a press release. “This knowledge allows us to put our prospects in front of colleges that are realistic for each prospect. With his father making a rare trip to Philly, Embiid showed once again he was wise to ditch digs for dunks. Embiid put on a show with his father in the stands for the first time this season, collecting 26 points and 14 rebounds while leading the Philadelphia 76ers to a 117-91 win over the New York Knicks last night. “Embiid was doing some damage in the post,” Knicks rookie Kevin Knox said. Embiid’s spin move into a one-handed jam earned a smile and applause from Thomas Embiid, a colonel in the Cameroon military who is visiting from the family’s home country and plans to spend a few weeks with his MVP candidate son. Growing up, Embiid had to convince his father that basketball wasn’t a dangerous game and he didn’t have to abide by Thomas’ wishes of becoming an elite volleyball player. Embiid was aces against the Knicks. The 7-footer had 17 points, seven rebounds and six assists in the first half alone. He finished with his NBA-best 21st double-double and helped the Sixers improve to 11-1 at home. He didn’t stick around to offer his usual quips and one-liners to the media — Embiid split to catch up with his family.

Coach Brett Brown said the Sixers didn’t play with spirit against the Cavs. They played with purpose against the road-weary Knicks. JJ Redick hit four 3s and scored 24 points and Ben Simmons had 14 points. Jimmy Butler hit a 3 in the third to make it 86-58 and give the Sixers a KO victory with former middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins sitting courtside. Redick made 10 of 14 shots and hit the 20-point mark for the third time in five games. “I always feel like when I shoot the ball it’s going to go in, but there’s a different feeling I think when you haven’t missed and you’ve taken a few shots and you just keep seeing the ball go

In a career high 33 minutes, he posted a near double double with seven points and eight rebounds against Miami (FL) and posted nine points and eight rebounds against Marist. SFA is one of eight teams that comprise the field for the 2018 Basketball Hall of Fame Belfast Classic and the ‘Jacks’ will

play two games in Belfast, Northern Ireland. First up is tomorrow’s matchup with undefeated San Francisco. As a true freshman, Bain saw time in 24 of SFA’s 34 contests. He posted averages of 2.4 points, 2.1 rebounds and 7.5 minutes per game. As a sophomore, he suffered a back injury that significantly shortened his 2016-17 season. He took part in only three games for SFA before getting sidelined and receiving a medical redshirt. Last season, he appeared in 24 of the ‘Jacks’ 35 games and averaged 2.0 points, 0.8 rebounds, 0.3 assists, 0.5 steals and 0.3 blocked shots in 6.4 minutes per game.

Higgs entered her senior season projected to be one of the top players in the Big 12 conference and was named to the 10-member Preseason All-Big 12 Team. She comes off a season where she claimed AllBig 12 Second Team, Big 12 All-Defensive Team, USWBA National Player of the Week and Big 12 Player of the Week. As a junior, she started 35 games and averaged 12.8 points per game,

which ranked third on the team, 3.3 rebounds per game and was third on the squad with 1.4 steals per game. Higgs scored in double figures on 21 occasions, including four 20-plus point performances. In her sophomore season, Higgs - the Harbour Island native - averaged eight points, three rebounds, 1.5 assists and one steal in just over 17 minutes per game. Ryan Tannehill’s future in Miami beyond 2018 in doubt By STEVEN WINE AP Sports Writer DAVIE, Florida (AP) — Ryan Tannehill gave a verbal thumbs-up yesterday regarding the health of his shoulder, as he has done daily since rejoining the Miami Dolphins’ lineup last week. He literally made that gesture to the bench a couple of times during Sunday’s loss at Indianapolis, Tannehill’s first game in seven weeks. He was responding to inquiries via headset from coach Adam Gase. “Sometimes Gase will pop in my helmet and just make sure everything is all right,” Tannehill said with a smile. “He’s like my mom, like, ‘Are you OK?’” Physically Tannehill is OK, yes. Returning from an injury to the capsule in his throwing shoulder, he said the pain is manageable and not as bad as last week. He’s wearing a shoulder harness on the field but said his play isn’t affected by the injury. He participated fully in practice Wednesday, which is more than he did last week. He played well last week and ranks 15th in the NFL with passer rating of 97.2, which would be a career high. But he’s leading an injury-riddled offence, which makes Tannehill’s job — and any evaluation of him — more difficult. He’s still going to need help reaching the playoffs with mounting injuries threatening to derail the Indianapolis Colts’ late postseason push. One week after starting centre Ryan Kelly went down with a left knee injury and one day after coach Frank Reich announced tight end Jack Doyle would miss the rest of the season with an injured kidney, Luck and his teammates started preparing for the closing five-game stretch that will determine whether they end a three-year playoff drought. “We’ve done it before,” tight end Eric Ebron said Tuesday when asked about the adjustments. “Everybody has to take on a heavier workload.” Doyle was injured late in the third quarter or early in the fourth, returned for two plays before leaving for good and then wound up in the hospital Sunday night for what Reich called a “procedure.” The team provided no immediate update on whether Doyle had been released from the hospital during Tuesday’s availability.
