Clarke, Bain advance to the finals By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net IT took Sydney Clarke’s “toughest” match and Jacobi Bain’s “amazing” performance to reach the girls’ and boys’ finals of the Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association’s International Tennis Federation 2018 Goombay Splash Bowl. Like a little dynamite, top seed Clarke shot out of the blocks and controlled the tempo of her half of the girls semi-finals yesterday to prevail with a 6-0, 6-4 decision over American Madison Smith.

Today, Clarke will get to take on Leyden Games in the final. Games, also from the United States, eliminated American No.2 seed Nicole Kieper 6-4, 6-1. Bain, relying on his tall, slender height, knocked off No.8 seed Riley Odell 6-3, 6-2 in his half of the boys’ semi-final at the National Tennis Centre. Unseeded Bain will now face No.4 Bruce Kuzuhara, another American, in the final. Kuzuhara earned his spot in the final with a 6-2, 7-6 (3) decision over American Derek Raskopf.

SYDNEY CLARKE It will mark the first time that the Bahamas will have a player featured in both the boys’ and girls’ final of the same tournament.

Clarke overpowers Smith The diminutive Clarke used her speed to win the first seven games, including a 6-0 shutout in the first set, to stun the taller and more powerpacked Smith in her semi-final match. Smith, just 13 years old, managed to regain her composure and held serve to get on the scoreboard for a 2-1 deficit in the second set. They both held serve with Clarke eventually holding serve at the end for the win. “It was the toughest one,” said Clarke about the match. “I am very proud of myself. I was

kind of nervous in the first set. I just had to stick to my game plan after I went over it last night. “The girl I played today was really good. She is solid, she hit a big ball, so I knew I had to do a lot of defending. When I had a chance to take the offence I had to take it.” After bringing her A game to the semi-final, Clarke admitted that there’s nothing left for her to do than to go all the way and clinch the title today. “I expect to play the same way tomorrow

he highest ranked teams headed into this year’s Bad Boy Mowers Battle 4 Atlantis will face off this afternoon to decide the tournament title. The No.4 Virginia Cavaliers and No.25 Wisconsin Badgers meet in the championship game scheduled for 2pm in the Atlantis resort’s Imperial Arena and broadcast live on ESPN. Both teams advanced with convincing semi-final wins in the early session on day two. The Badgers dominated the Oklahoma Sooners 78-58 in the first game of the afternoon. Wisconsin makes it second Battle 4 Atlantis Championship appearance after winning the tournament title in 2014. D’Mitrik Trice went 0-5 from three-point range in Wisconsin’s first round win over Stanford but rebounded with a career high performance beyond the arc against Oklahoma. Trice scored a career high 25 and set a new tournament record with seven three pointers. Trice’s only miss from beyond the arc on the day came with just under six minutes left to play in the second half. The sophomore guard set the tone for the entire Badgers roster who shot 14-22 from three on the afternoon. Kobe King scored 15 while Ethan

Happ scored 14 and grabbed 12 rebounds. “Yesterday the shots didn’t go in, but today they fell,” Trice said. “This means a lot. I thank my teammates and coaches for always believing in me, and I just continue to work on my confidence to get this thing rolling.” Christian James led the Sooners with 18 points. Both teams made three of their first six field goals. Wisconsin took a 31-28 lead into the half and used a 12-3 run to separate themselves for good. The Badgers went ahead by double digits for the first time when Happ found King on a backdoor cut and wide open layup (45-34). Every time Oklahoma chipped away, the Badgers answered with three. Trice dished to Nate Reuvers for another three and an 18-point lead with just under eight minutes left to play. In the second semi-final, Virginia overcame a slow start to outlast Dayton 66-59. De’Andre Hunter matched his career high with 23 points to help the Cavaliers stave off the upset-minded Flyers. Hunter’s clutch three pointer with under one minute left to play gave Virginia a two-possession lead and breathing room with a seven-point advantage. CHAVEZ YOUNG BASEBALL CAMP IN JANUARY By RENALDO DORSETT Tribune Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net CHAVEZ Young seeks to continue his efforts of giving back to the local Grand Bahamian baseball community during his offseason. The standout prospect in the Toronto Blue Jays farm system will host the Chavez Young Baseball Camp, January 2-3 at the EMERA Baseball Complex in Grand Bahama. Free admission to all participants, day one will host players aged 7-13 while day two will feature players ages 14 and older. The event will feature appearances by fellow minor leaguers Bo Bichette, Joshua Palacios and Richard Palacios. Bichette is listed as the No.2 prospect in the Blue Jays farm system. No stranger to the Bahamas, he was also the winner of the inaugural “Don’t Blink Home Run Derby” hosted at Montagu Bay in 2017. Joshua Palacios spent last season as Bichette’s teammate with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats in the Double A Eastern League. Richard, the younger of the Palacios

THE Bahamas Baseball Association’s under-18 men’s national baseball team left New Providence en-route to Panama to compete in the Pan American Baseball Confederation championships set to start today in Panama. The team is being led by Samuel Rodgers, president of the BBA. The head of the delegation is Marvin ‘Toogie’ Wood. The team will be managed by Ken Adderley, assisted by Marcian Curry, Keel Pinder and Lionel Ferguson. Johnson, 12, returned from a trip to Atlanta, Georgia, where he participated in a four-week circuit in four different tournaments in four different states where he accumulated more medals and trophies in the intermediate II and juvenile A categories. He went to Tennessee where he earned two gold, in South Carolina he picked up two more gold and the most outstanding junior trophy, in Mississippi he added two more gold and he capped it off in Dallas with two gold and the most outstanding junior trophy as well. “I feel good,” said Johnson in an interview with The Tribune. “I was

Buddy and Kings beat Jazz 119-110 SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Buddy Hield scored 10 points, including two three-pointers, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out four assists in 30 minutes to help the Sacramento Kings beat the Utah Jazz 119-110 on Wednesday night. Nemanja Bjelica made a 3-pointer with 4:56 remaining to finish a 16-1 run that turned a twopoint game into a 105-88 lead. “You lose games when you stop playing hard and start trying to hold the ball. If you try and stall out the game, you’re going to lose,” said Cauley-Stein, who shot 11 for 15. “We want to keep being aggressive.” Just when Sacramento looked to be in total control, the Jazz mustered a last-gasp rally. Donovan Mitchell scored 14 points in less than 3½ minutes to bring Utah to 114-110. “We have the fight in us,” Mitchell said. “We’ve got to do that, not when we’re down 15 or 17. ... We’ve got to do it from the beginning of the game.” Bjelica, who had 18 points, converted a three-point play and Iman

AYTON POSTS DOUBLE DOUBLE IN SUNS’ LOSS TO BULLS CHICAGO (AP) — Deandre Ayton scored 18 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and dished out five assists for the Phoenix Suns in a 124-116 loss to the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday night. It was Ayton’s 10th double-double of his rookie season. The No.1 pick in the NBA Draft also had a steal and a block in 33 minutes. Devin Booker scored 23 points and T.J. Warren had 21. Phoenix lost for the seventh time in its last eight games and they will try to stop a six-game slide against Milwaukee when they visit the Bucks on Friday night. Jabari Parker and the Bulls pushed the ball whenever they had the chance. They stayed focused when the Suns made a big play. A couple of solid practices really paid off. Parker had 20 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists. Chicago shot a seasonhigh 56.8 per cent from the field and placed six players in double figures in just its third win in its last 12 games. Following an ugly 122-83 home loss to Toronto on Saturday night, Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg worked on pushing the pace in practice, and his team responded with one of its best offensive performances. UB MINGOES STOP DEFENDERS 83-60, HIGH FLYERS ROUT ELITE 92-76 KEMSY Sylvestre was one assist away from a triple double for the University of the Bahamas as they took out the Fort Charlotte Defenders 83-60 in New Providence Basketball Association action at the AF Adderley Gym on Wednesday night. In the opener, the Breezes High Flyers routed the Basden Elevator Elite 92-76 in a division II encounter. Sylvestre dumped in 26 points to go along with 13 rebounds, nine assists and six steals on the night for the Mingoes squad that now move to 3-0 in division one of the league. The Defenders fell to 0-2. Antwan Bevan also had a big night with 17 points and 13 rebounds for the Mingoes. Brian Jennings also putting up double figures as he scored 10. The Defenders’ only significant lead of the match came early in the first quarter at 5:32 (10-8). The Mingoes ended the first quarter up 22-17 but then went on a 14-2 run to take the 36-19 lead at 5:45 in the second quarter. The Mingoes would not look back after that in the game. In fact the squad led by as much as 29 points in the 4th quarter on a deep jumper from Sylvestre to go up 73-44 (7:22). “The game plan was to figure out the shooters, we came in and we didn’t know who their shooters were so we stacked it in the paint,” Bevans said. “We realised they had no real shooters so we kept the compact defence to dominate.” The Mingoes also beat the Defenders in rebounds (57-45) and assists (23-14).

Bain swept Odell After playing two tough three setters in the second and third rounds, Bain got back to winning ways in the first round by stopping Odell in two straight sets. Bain jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead in the first set and held serve for the win. In the second set, Odell managed to take the early 2-0 lead, but Bain went up a break at 3-2 and he coasted to victory the rest of the way. “I thought I played amazing. I thought I played way better than I did in my last three matches, so it was a much better performance for me,” Bain said. “It was pretty close in the first set before I finally got a break and I starting holding more and breaking more. In the second set, he started playing better and I fell down 2-0. I just had to come back and fight.” Like Clarke, Bain said if he can duplicate his performance from yesterday, he should be able to pull off the final today. “I just have to be consistent and keep the balls on the court,” he said. “I’m looking forward to it. It will be a good one. It would be even special if I can win it at home.” Bain, 15, said he’s just excited to join Clarke as the first two Bahamians to play in the finals in the same tournament. Boys’ doubles semi-finals Bain will have double duties as he and his American partner William Kesterson, seeded at No.3, advanced to the boys’ doubles final today with a 4-6, 6-3, 10-7 decision over the top seeded team of Riley Odell and Jc Roddick from the USA. Bain and Kesterson will now face the No.2 team of Piotr Kusiewicz and Mark Lajal, who advanced with a 6-3, 6-3 win over No.4 seeds Bruno Kuzuhara and Derek Raskopf.They are scheduled to play the doubles final at 11am. Girls’ doubles semi-finals The finals for the girls’ doubles will come down to a showdown between the No.2 and No.4 teams. In one half of the draw, No.2 seed Petra Miszczak and Genevieve Quenville, both of Canada, won 6-3, 7-5 over Americans Rachel Treibick Caplan and Ashley Vielma. No ranting and raving about local sports, just give thanks IT’S the thanksgiving season, so rather than ranting and raving about what isn’t going right and what needs to be corrected in local sports, I thought I would just take this time to be thankful. Thankful for the fact that God has spared our lives to read this column, even though it has a slightly different twist from the norm each week. We don’t have a public holiday as they do in the United States and people were consumed with the lavish turkey meal, watching football and getting ready for the busiest shopping time of the year. We have the Goombay Splash Bowl at the National Tennis Centre where two of the top junior players in the Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association will be vying for the girls’ and boys’ titles today. By the time some of you would have read this, it might be too late to head there as Sydney Clarke and Jacobi Bain will be on the court at 9am this mornng against their Americans foes Leyden Games and Bruno Kuzuhara respectively.

It’s the first time that the Bahamas will have two players in the final in the same event, so we have to be grateful for their achievements, whether or not they go all the way and win. We should be thankful that there is still the Battle 4 Atlantis that is in full swing at Atlantis where eight of the top division one men’s basketball teams are in competition. And in Bimini, there are eight teams squaring off in the 2018 Women’s Junkanoo Jam Field, a tournament that was unfortunately moved from Grand Bahama and never went back. We are thankful that Grand Bahama is still reaping some of the economic effects with the hosting of the Tabernacle Baptist Tournament for high school teams as there are some visiting teams from the United States. These tournaments, like the others that have been staged here in recent times, give Bahamians a rare opportunity to see some of the future National Basketball Association and Women’s National

Basketball Association (WNBA) players. Let’s be thankful that those tournaments have not been moved from our shores because of a lack of funding, as is the case of the International Amateur Athletic Federation’s World Relays that is going to Japan next April. We should be thankful that the Bahamas has become one of the sporting destinations around the world with at least one major event in basketball, football, track and field, soccer and golf making a stop here. No doubt, the Bahamas Roadmasters are thankful that not all of the cash prize for their sixth annual Bahamas Half Marathon went into the pockets of the foreign competitors. Oneil Williams came home from training in

Kenya and benefitted by carting off the men’s purse of $5,000, which he said is needed to support his efforts. Suzy Eneas gave it a gallant effort, but just fell shy of securing the women’s share of the cash that went to Canadian Pascale Dubois, who was here on vacation with her family. Based on the competition we also saw over the weekend in the Nations League, we’re grateful that the men’s national soccer team did not get shutout - again, finishing in a 1-1 draw on a second half goal from substitute Nesly Jean against Anguilla at the Thomas A Robinson National Stadium. Afterwards, Dion Godet hinted that he might be stepping down as head coach of the team as he

doesn’t feel he’s the one to carry the team to the next level. We are thankful that at least he admitted that the handwriting maybe on the wall and it’s time to step aside and pass the mantle on. Finally, we’re thankful that on Saturday, the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations will finally host its election of officers and all of the ranting and raving will cease with the new administration in place. Whether it’s Rosamunde Carey returning or Drumeco Archer replacing her as president, we would be thankful that the delegates get to choose the right leader and that the BAAA can move forward with its vibrant programme. I’m just grateful that today, I won’t get off on a tantrum, but I can pause to give God all thanks and praise for allowing me to write another objective column. Let’s all just be thankful for whatever state we find ourselves in. This is a good time to be thankful as we look ahead to the festive season that is just around the corner. In all things, give thanks.

White, who has been working with Johnson for the past two years, credits a lot of Johnson’s success to his mother Ordain Moss, who has instilled in her son the ability to set goals and try to achieve them. “I think his performance so far has been amazing,” said White about Johnson’s latest achievements, which have been ranked as a first for any Bahamian. “He has been to all of the major tournaments in the USA and the Bahamas and he has shown total domination, focus and determination to make sure that he stays on top of his age group and weight and the group above his.” White said his aim is to push Johnson to become the greatest individual that he can be because “judo is a sport that does that” and so he wants him to become the best person on and off the mat. What he doesn’t get from White, Johnson has received from Munnings, who has coached him for the past four and-a-half years. “His achievement and success comes from hard work. He is very dedicated to training, tries to be on time, first one to reach most times and the last one to leave,” Munnings said. By putting in 110 per cent into practice, Munnings said Johnson has been successful in his performances. “He was very successful in the tournaments he competed in this year,” he stated. “He attended numerous of tournaments and was

While he gives credit where credit is due to his coaches, Johnson said he owes a great deal of commendation to his mother for her perseverance in making sure that everything goes well in his training locally and overseas. “I am very proud of her. She was the one who got me into the sport,” he said. “Without here, none of these things will come through.” As a single parent mother, Moss said she tries to ensure that he has every opportunity to excel in the sport. “I am amazed. Last year he competed in this same competition in Dallas and got a bronze with a hyper extension shoulder. He was in therapy for months after this one tournament. So for him to go back to this tournament and fought in two divisions and won two gold and the most outstanding trophy shows the dramatic growth that he’s had over the year.” Moss said she sent her only child off on a monthlong trip to the USA and she was pleased that White was able to take care of him. During his latest trip, Johnson said he had to endure the chilly weather, but he was pleased to have Wright in his corner, not just as his international coach but as a father-figure, to take care of him as he competed in the “greatest sport. “I want to become a ninja and that is why I chose judo,” he said. “If I wasn’t doing judo, I probably would be running marathons. I like to run. I

Brees, Saints win 10th straight, eliminate Falcons in NFC South By BRETT MARTEL AP Sports Writer NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Drew Brees threw four touchdown passes to inexperienced receivers and the New Orleans Saints won their 10th straight game last night with a 31-17 victory over Atlanta that eliminated the Falcons from contention in the NFC South. Tommylee Lewis and Austin Carr each caught their second career touchdown pass. And rookie tight end Dan Arnold grabbed his first, as did rookie receiver Keith Kirkwood. All four entered the NFL as undrafted free agents within the past three years and had combined for zero touchdowns this season before Carr caught the first of his career last Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Falcons (4-7) lost three fumbles inside the Saints 20 — something no team facing streaking New Orleans (10-1) can afford this season. Atlanta quarterback Matt Ryan was stripped by safety Marcus Williams on a third-and-2 from the Saints 3 and Williams recovered to end Atlanta’s opening drive. Julio Jones was stripped by linebacker Alex Anzalone after a catch on the New Orleans 17, and safety Vonn Bell recovered in the final minute of the second quarter to preserve a 17-3 lead going into halftime. The Saints’ defence, which had a season-high six sacks, continued to come up with big plays in the second half, with Anzalone breaking up a fourth-down pass in the third quarter

and linebacker A.J. Klein intercepting a pass tipped by defensive tackle Tyeler Davison in the fourth. The interception gave the Saints possession on the Atlanta 22, setting up Kirkwood’s diving 4-yard TD catch. Just for good measure, Lattimore stripped Calvin Ridley on the Saints 1 after a 29-yard completion that looked as though it would end with a touchdown with about four minutes to go. Defensive back Eli Apple recovered that one. Ryan was under pressure all night from a Saints defence that was bolstered by the return of first-round draft choice Marcus Davenport from a toe injury that sidelined him for three games. Cameron Jordan had two sacks, while Williams, P.J. Williams, Sheldon Rankins

and Demario Davis each had one. Ryan finished 35 of 47 for 377 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. But very little came easy. His first TD pass, to Calvin Ridley, came on a fourthand-goal from the 2 at the end of the third quarter. Atlanta rushed for just 26 yards, while New Orleans finished with 150, led by Alvin Kamara’s 89 and Mark Ingram’s 52. Statistically, Brees did not have one of his more impressive games, completing 15 of 22 passes for 171 yards with his second interception of the season. The pick was snagged by Damontae Kazee, his NFLleading sixth this year. But Brees’ ability to play to the strengths of unheralded receivers allowed the Saints to cash in on scoring opportunities.

Lewis, a third-year pro, was in his first game back after spending nine weeks on injured reserve and had not caught a pass all season before getting wide open for his 28-yard grab that made it 7-0 on the first series of the game. Carr is a second-year pro who played in only one game without a catch as a rookie. Kirkwood made his NFL debut three games ago, when Arnold had his first career reception. DETROIT (AP) — Chase Daniel outplayed Matthew Stafford, proving an NFL journeyman can beat one of the highest-paid players in the league. Daniel threw a careerhigh two touchdowns to keep the Chicago Bears rolling with a 23-16 win over the Detroit Lions yesterday, filling in very well for injured quarterback Mitchell Trubisky. “You don’t know when these opportunities will come,” the 32-year-old Daniel said after making the third start of his career and first in nearly four years. “You just have to make the most of them.” He did. Daniel finished 27 of 37 for 230 yards, setting career highs in each category. He threw a go-ahead, 10-yard touchdown pass to Taquan Mizzell in the second quarter and a 14-yard pass to Tarik Cohen in the fourth to give Chicago the lead again at 16-13. It was quite a performance for Daniel, a player who has been used sparingly since the former Missouri star entered the league in 2010. He barely played for New Orleans, Kansas City, Philadelphia and Chicago, but gained respect from coaches and players for his preparation. “Everyone in this locker room knew what he was going to do, and he didn’t let us down,” Mizzell said. “People forget how long he’s been in the NFL and how much talent he has. They talk about the number of games he’s started, but the people that practice with him every day knew that he was going to give us a chance to win this game.” And unlike Stafford, Daniel didn’t make any costly mistakes. Stafford was 28 of 38 for 236 yards with two interceptions late in the fourth, dooming Detroit’s chances to win. The Lions drafted Stafford No. 1 overall in 2009 and gave him a $135 million, five-year extension last year. The NFC North-leading Bears (8-3) sealed their fifth straight victory with Kyle Fuller’s interception in the end zone with 1:07 left.

Woods-Mickelson match will be unique experience for viewers By JOE REEDY AP Sports Writer GOLF used to have a prominent place on the Thanksgiving weekend calendar with The Skins Game. That made-forTV event ended in 2008 but Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson will have their own high-stakes showdown today. After years of discussion, the two will compete in “The Match” at Shadow Creek in Las Vegas, a $9 million winner-takeall event that will air on pay-per-view. Many wondered if a Woods vs. Mickelson match was a thing of the past. The two have combined for 123 PGA Tour victories and 19 majors but had struggled in recent years. Talk of a match was revived earlier this year when Mickelson won in Mexico and Woods started to be competitive again before winning at The Tour Championship in September. Mickelson said the original premise was both

partnering up with some of the sport’s younger stars, but television executives and fans have always wanted to see the two go head to head. “To have the opportunity to go head to head and to win is just. . it’s great to win the 9 million. “I just don’t want to lose to him and give him the satisfaction, because the bragging rights are what’s going to be even worse than the money,” Mickelson said during a press conference Tuesday. Both were part of the US team at the Ryder Cup but have not competed since then. “After the Ryder Cup I shut it down for about 3-4 weeks and started to basically work on my body and try to get it stronger again,” Woods said. “I was really looking forward to the break, but I’m really looking forward to getting back to playing again. I missed competing, and to be able to go against Phil like this gets my juices flowing for sure.”

Mickelson said he has been working on his game the past four weeks and that this is a good way during the offseason to prepare for next year. Many golf fans are used to made-for-TV events that have been genteel affairs. This will be the complete opposite. For starters, this is believed to be golf’s first pay-per-view match. This is the first major event with Warner Media, which was formed after the recent merger between Time Warner and AT&T. Turner Sports and BR Live are producing the event and it is being shown online as well as on DirecTV and AT&T U-Verse and other cable and satellite outlets for $19.95. Ernie Johnson Jr, who has done the PGA Championship for Turner, will be the main announcer but it will feature others including Natalie Gulbis, Charles Barkley and Samuel L Jackson The broadcast will feature both golfers mic’d up

Woods and Mickelson used to be bitter rivals, but the relationship has improved in recent years as both got to know each other during Ryder Cups. But Darren Clarke, who has competed against both, expects the rivalry to intensify during the match. “Different people think this is going to be a fun match but both are natural-born winners. At some stage you are going to see it get a bit uncomfortable as both will call out each other,” he said. The most intriguing thing is the gambling aspect. The players will set their own odds on shots during different times and fans will be able to bet along with them. Clarke said gambling has been a part of the European Tour for years and it will be interesting to see how it does today. Craig Barry, who is Turner’s executive vice president and chief content officer, is also interested to see how the side bets work out, especially since more states are approving
