he St Augustine’s College Big Red Machine placed four teams in the Bahamas Association of Independent Secondary Schools softball championships and three of those teams got their title runs off to favourable starts. The junior girls defeated the Queen’s College Comets 7-5, the junior boys took a 6-1 win over the NCA Crusaders and the senior boys also won 15-4 over the Crusaders in game one of each series yesterday at the Freedom Farm Complex. In the senior girls’ division, the Comets prevented the sweep with their 5-2 win over the Big Red Machine. In the girls’ game, SAC took a 4-0 lead in the first inning and eventually led 6-0 through four innings. The Comets would rally late with their first run of the game in the fourth inning before they racked on another two in the fifth. Big Red Machine head coach Vernice Russell said once the team performs the way they should at the plate, she expects them to close out the series. “We came out strong executing

plays as we had planned to do. Our pitcher was pitching strong to start out with and we dominated in the first four innings. “In the last inning we struggled a bit, but our team is one with heart and they were able to pull the win off,” she said. “Ultimately we came out and did what we were supposed to do. We have to come out again continuing to hit, hitting is key, that’s what we are good at so we have to keep that going.” The boys’ game was a defensive struggle for most of the afternoon before SAC broke the game open in the third and fourth innings. The Crusaders struck first with a run in the top half of the first inning in what turned out to be their only score of the game. SAC took the lead for good when Tyler Munroe hit an RBI single for a 2-1 score. NCA’s pitcher Norman Basden struck out two of the next three hitters he faced in the inning. Neither team would score in the second. Munroe retired the side in order, two pop ups and a ground out and the NCA pitcher would do the same with a strike out and two ground outs.

JONQUEL Jones looks to continue her momentum from the WNBA to the Women’s Chinese Basketball Association. Her Shanxi Flame got the season off to an impressive start with a 92-52 win over Heilongjiang in the season opener yesterday. They got out to a 24-14 advantage after the first quarter and never relinquished the lead in the lopsided route. Defensively, they limited Heilongjiang to just eight points in the second quarter and took a 43-22 lead at the half. The WCBA is the toptier professional women’s basketball league in China and is the women’s counterpart to the Chinese Basketball Association. Shanxi Flame became notable internationally when the Minnesota Lynx perennial All-Star Maya Moore joined the club for the 2012-2013 season. The Flame followed by winning three consecutive WCBA championships. The 2017-18 WCBA will include a 26-round regular season and playoffs, as well as All-Star weekend on January 20, 2018. The league expanded by two clubs this year to bring the total number of teams to 14. The top eight teams will advance to the playoffs. Many of Jones’ Connecticut Sun teammates have already began their offseason commitments as well. Jones will be joined in China by teammate Lynetta Kizer, who will be spending the offseason with Shandong Sports Lottery and Morgan Tuck with Shaanxi. out as the Teacher of the Year for 2016-18 at Cleveland Eneas Primary School, principal Patrice Bodie said she doesn’t think she can find a more dedicated and devoted physical education teacher than Mariska Thompson. During a special ceremony at the school, Thompson was honoured by the faculty, staff and students. She also had praises heaped upon her by her former coach at Government High School, Leroy Thompson. Thompson, listed as Thompson’s adopted father, gave the keynote address as he patterned her journey to a person trying to climb to the top and never giving up. Among those in attendance were Belinda Wilson, president of the Bahamas Union of Teachers as well as “Golden Girls”

An RBI single from Joshua Miller produced the game’s final run. “We were focused and we were hitting the fastball,” said SAC coach Michael Adderley. “We have always had problems with the lob, but as long as we keep up with the fastball we will be able to hit. Our defence was pretty good so we were able to stop them from collecting any runs.” Game two in each series is set for Wednesday afternoon at the Freedom Farm Complex.

‘Potential remedies to keep my Cowboys playoff train on track’ OKAY Cowboy Nation, breath in, breath out....... shake it off, all is not lost, we are okay, and we will be just fine. No need to panic. Here are two problem areas that haunted the Cowboys on Sunday, and their potential remedies, in order to keep the Cowboys playoff train on track, until ‘Zeke’ returns. 1. THE KEY PIECE Yes, the Cowboys had one key player missing during Sunday’s loss to the Falcons, and crippled their entire offence. No, it wasn’t suspended running back Ezekiel Elliott, it was injured left tackle Tyron Smith. No, Smith did not make the trip to Atlanta with back and groin injuries. Smith’s All Pro Pedigree was confirmed. Without him, QB Dak Prescott and the Dallas offence had not the slightest chance. Prescott was sacked a shocking eight times. Six came from Adrian Clayborn, the Falcons’ situational edge rusher, at the expense of Smith’s overwhelmed fill-in, Chaz Green. (It’s official he’s a Draft Bust, absolute waste of a third round pick. Green is garbage truck juice.) This made the Cowboys one-dimensional which they didn’t expect. When neither Prescott nor Morris nor Smith was running, the Cowboys were passing on empty. Despite as a team rushing for 108 yards, Prescott (20for-30 passing, 176 yards) averaged 4.6 yards per pass attempt and was unable to

Her performance led WNBA general managers to vote Jones as the players most likely to have a breakout season in the WNBA. Mariska Thompson honoured as Teacher of the Year FROM PAGE 1 coming to Cleveland Eneas, Thompson is “indeed the best physical education teacher in the Bahamas and she stands shoulders above the rest.” In his address, Thompson took his audience down memory lane as he made references to bring his point home about Thompson. “I am proud of her, but I think it is something that should happen more often because physical education teachers work very hard and they are often overlooked,” said Thompson, who stepped in as Thompson’s adopted father after her father died and her mother had gone to England to complete her studies. “I think this is a great accomplishment, not just for her, but for physical education teachers throughout the Bahamas.” Davis said it was a beautiful ceremony for a well-deserved person. “Mariska and I go way back. We were in school

together at Government High and she is a very hard worker who is dedicated and passionate about her students and her family,” Davis said. “So I am not surprised that she is Teacher of the Year because as a little girl, she showed that passion, dedication, discipline and determination to do what she is doing now.” As a long-time friend and also a former teammate, Clarke said she would not have missed the opportunity to celebrate with Thompson for anything in the world. “I’m really excited and happy for Mariska,” she said. “Both of us were junior athletes and went to Hampton University together. We were like sisters. We shared a lot of moments together and she truly deserves this honour. “Let’s not forget the things she did when she came to this school. This school was nowhere coming on top of the competition and now they are one

private luncheon with her collegiate. “I’m really blown away,” said Thompson, who shared the moment with her husband Renatus Thompson. “I’m thankful to the almighty God for allowing me to see this day. “Words cannot express how I feel right now. I’m thankful, thankful. “That’s all I can say. I’m one of those persons who just do what I have to do and whatever happens,

I just thank God for the passion to do what I do.” She thanked Bodie, the faculty and staff, students, especially those on the athletic team, and the parents for helping to make her tenure so far at Cleveland Eneas a successful one. Thompson was a former 400/800m specialist who represented the country at the CARIFTA Games, the Junior Central American and Caribbean and the

Jr Pan American Games while a student at Government High and Hampton University. Upon graduation, she began her teaching career at Aquinas College for one year before she moved to Our Lady’s Catholic School where she worked for 10 years, earning the Teacher of the Year in 2003. In 2004, she was posted at Cleveland Eneas as a trained teacher and during her 13 years at the school, she has guided their track and field team to five public schools track and field championships, three of which were consecutive. Additionally, she has branched out and is having some success as well with their girls’ soccer team, reaching the final for the past two years. As a devote Christian, Thompson has also carried that momentum over to her church where she has helped the Most Holy Trinity Anglican to win two championship titles since taking over as head coach in 2011.

Don’t tell that to the Sacramento Kings. Wall had 21 points and nine assists, Marcin Gortat scored 18 and Washington beat Sacramento 110-92 last night for its third straight win. Wall shot 8 of 9 from the field, including 4 for 4 from 3-point range. In two games against the Kings, he has 40 points and is 9 for 10 from long distance. In his other 10 games, he is 5 for 32. “I think I’m taking the same exact shots,” Wall said. “I’m just making them against them for some reason. The world No. 1 withdrew from the elite, season-ending tournament after losing his opening match to David Goffin 7-6 (5), 6-7 (4), 6-4 yesterday at the O2 Arena.
