Bodybuilders shine in the Faye Rolle Classic

BUDDY Hield was relegated to the bench, but while he produced more efficient shooting performances as a reserve, the Sacramento Kings offence continued to struggle as they lost their seventh straight. Hield finished with 13 points and a season high eight rebounds in the Kings’ 108-99 loss to the Detroit Pistons at the Little Ceasar’s Arena in Detroit, Michigan, on Saturday night. He shot 5-11 from the field, 1-3 from threepoint range in 21 minutes. It was his second game off the bench, following last Wednesday’s 113-86 loss on the road to the Boston Celtics. In that game, Hield scored a team high 17 on his best shooting game of the year, 7-11 from the field and 2-4 from three in 27 minutes. Twelve of those points came in the fourth quarter and he also added seven rebounds and three steals. While it is a small sample size with just two games, Hield’s production off the bench has been much more efficient than his seven games as a starter averagining 15 points, 7.5 rebounds and shooting 50 per cent from the field. Hield told Kings sideline reporter Kayte Christensen about his reaction to the decision to move to the bench. “I think coach making the decision to bring me off the bench was probably the best decision,” Hield said. “I think it’s good for me, to help me, slow down a little bit and let the game come to me instead of going out and chasing it.” The Kings exercised the option on Hield last Tuesday but hours later he finished just 2-9 from the field and finished with four points in the Kings’ 101-83 loss to the Indiana Pacers at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana. “Buddy Hield is not this bad of a shooter, Buddy

nly a handful of competitors showed up to participate in the Bahamas Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation’s inaugural Faye Rolle Classic, but those that did put on a show for the audience at Loyola Hall on Saturday night. Women’s bikini open winner Shakira Ferguson, women’s physique open champion Tanya Cleare, men’s physique open winner Wellington Wallace and men’s bodybuilding open champion Jimmy Norius said it was all about showing their support for Rolle, an ailing former bodybuilder. “It feels great since I just came back from Canada and I was exhausted. You can push through it. Two more weeks of diet won’t hurt or kill you. I felt great,” Ferguson said.

On Friday night at the AF Adderley Gymnasium, the division II champions High Flyers zoomed past the Johnson Trucking 99-82, while the Commonwealth Bank Giants routed the division one champions Regulators 87-69. On Saturday night as the league continued play in a men’s division one double header, the Pirates knocked off the Vitamalt Chargers 76-66 and the PJ Stingers held off the Island Game Pros. Gibson, playing 26 minutes and 31 seconds, pumped in a game high 18 points as he shot 7-for-13 from the field and just 4-for-12 from the free throw line. He also had seven rebounds with a blocked shot. “For the first half of the game, I noticed that we were playing neck and neck, but their bench wasn’t as deep as mine and they really couldn’t handle our man-to-man,” said Breezes’ head coach Donnie Culmer, “We just wore them down. I have six bigs (forwards and centres), who could really play the game with four or five guards who can also play. This year, my team is much better than last year, so I expect nothing less than another championship.”

Culmer’s Breezes, who led at the end of three breaks, had six other players in doubles figures. The duo, who came up short in France during the European tour this summer, reached the final of doubles of the Torneo Internacional Femenino Pereira 2017 in Colombia where they lost to the No.2 seeded team of Emily Appleton of Great Britain and Maria Fernanda Herazo Gonzalez of Colombia 7-5, 2-6, (10-7) on Saturday. “Overall, I think it was a great tournament. We started off very well,” Cartwright told The Tribune. “As the tournament went on, we started to play very well. So I wish her the best and I pray that God takes care of her and pulls her through.” For Cleare, the lone competitor in the women’s physique open, when she heard that the show was for Rolle, she gladly accepted the challenge to compete. “It was from my heart because I’ve been competing all this year and after CAC Championships was cancelled, I decided to give it my all in all for Faye Rolle,” stated Clare, the reigning national physique champion. “I wanted to show my love and support to her family. It’s all from my heart. I think we could have had a better turnout, but you never know what the struggle is for the others. I’m just glad to be here to give my support.” Wallace, beating out a field of six other competitors, said he spent the past few weeks training really hard for the show. In the final, he won over Jay Darling Jr, the runnerup and third place finisher Alberto Rahming. The other competitors in the field were Karl Espiritu, Kyle King, Jeremy Misiewicz and Aaron Mackey, but Wallace said he was able to battle through for the win.

“I felt really good out there. I’m in good spirits and I’m really glad that I got the opportunity to compete in the show,” he said. “It was for a beautiful lady. I don’t really know her, but I heard that she was fantastic.” No stranger to the top spot on the stage, Norius won the pose down against Giovanni Farrington and Paul ‘Mighty’ Mouse’ Wilson to cart of the men’s bodybuilding open title. “The show was good. But even though it was a small show, it was tough. It could have gone either way,” he pointed out. “Paul was amazing. This was the best I saw him and Giovanni is coming on really quick. “I think the judges wanted the complete package that I presented, so I’m happy that I won, especially since this was for Faye Rolle. I always tell people that you never know the plans of God. Some things God is keeping us away from some things to move us to something better.” Norius said he wanted to give his support to Rolle to show her that bodybuilding is not the end. It’s a means to an end. He said Rolle has also encouraged him and his wife and that’s why he joined the federation in showing their appreciation to her. Rolle’s daughter Latoya Rahming said she appreciates the support and love that the federation gave to her mother, who is doing a new form of treatment. “It made my heart so warm because this was something she dreamed about and to see it come to fruition, I was overwhelmed with tears for her,” said Rahming. She took the stage with her aunt Tammy Wood,

uncle Godfrey Rolle and cousin Jammie Rolle to receive a plaque from federation president Joel Stubbs and public relations officer Nardo Dean during the show. A video presentation of Rolle’s career in bodybuilding and her rehabilitation was shown. Stubbs said although they anticipated having more competitors out, he said they are happy to finally get the event of the ground. He noted that it should have been held from last year, but they had to hold off on it because of the lack of funding. “We wanted to give back to Faye and her medical expenses,” he said. “Hopefully next year we can elevate this to another notch to be a bigger show where we turn it into an international classic where we invite athletes from the Caribbean and even the United States and Canada to compete.” As an invitational event, Stubbs said competitors received some cash prizes as an incentive and hopefully that will encourage more to come out next year. After the CAC Championships was cancelled, Stubbs said many of the local competitors stopped training and that was one of the reasons for the low turnout for the initial event, coupled with the fact that it was late in the year when just about everybody would have stopped training to compete. Also during the show, newly minted professional bodybuilder Lakeisha Miller put on an exhibition performance for the crowd, which she attributed to Rolle, whom she met when she first came on the bodybuilding scene.

LONDON (AP) — Manchester City is the team to catch in the Premier League, and it’s getting even more challenging. Pep Guardiola’s side moved eight points clear with a 3-1 victory over Arsenal yesterday when second-place Manchester United lost 1-0 at Chelsea. Tottenham trails United on goal difference and is a point ahead of defending champion Chelsea after beating last-place Crystal Palace 1-0. There is still more than twothirds of the season to go but City is looking a formidable attacking unit that’s proving hard to thwart. It’s the only unbeaten team in England, and with an enviable depth of talent on the field and on the bench. “Can anyone stop them? It

will be difficult this season,” Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said. “The way they have started, the way they are on a run, the quality they have. They’ll be difficult to stop but, you never know.”

FLANAGAN UPSETS KEITANY, ENDS US DROUGHT AT NYC MARATHON By JAKE SEINER Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — Shalane Flanagan dethroned Mary Keitany yesterday and became the first American woman to win the New York City Marathon since 1977, potentially ending her decorated career with her first major marathon victory. Geoffrey Kamworor of Kenya won the men’s race, holding off countryman Wilson Kipsang by 3 seconds for his first major victory. Keitany had won three straight New York marathons, but Flanagan pulled away from the Kenyan great with about three miles to go. Flanagan finished in 2 hours, 26 minutes, 53 seconds, about a minute faster than Keitany. The American cried and yelled as she approached the finish line all alone. “It’s indescribable,” the 36-yearold Flanagan said. “It’s a moment I’m trying to soak up and savour.” The last American woman to win New York was Miki Gorman, who took consecutive titles in 1976-77. Flanagan finished second in New York for her first marathon in 2010 but hadn’t run this race since. This was her first marathon since finishing sixth at the Rio Games due to a fracture in her lower back. The injury kept her out of the Boston Marathon in the spring but set her up to train hard for New York with an eye on Keitany. Flanagan had called Keitany “the alpha racer” and said she was ready to “suffer dearly” while keeping pace with the unpredictable Kenyan. Flanagan, Keitany and Ethiopia’s Mamitu Daska were step-and-step until the 24th mile. Keitany never made a move,

Goals by Casemiro in the first half, and Marco Asensio and Isco in the second, secured Madrid victory at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, keeping it eight points behind leader Barcelona after 11 games. Barcelona defeated Sevilla 2-1 Saturday to maintain a four-point lead over second-place Valencia, which routed Leganes 3-0 for its seventh straight league win. Madrid was under pressure after losses at Girona in La Liga and at Tottenham in the Champions League. The team endured a wave of criticism this week, and a convincing home win was needed to ease tensions for the defending champions. “This win is important to help the team regain its confidence,” Madrid defender Sergio Ramos said. “Little by little we are getting back on the right track.” Madrid was in control from the start, and Casemiro opened the scoring with a header following a corner just before halftime. Asensio added to the lead with a booming, long-range shot into the top corner early in the second half, and Isco sealed the victory from inside the area after a well-placed low cross by Cristiano Ronaldo toward the end of the match. A team that hadn’t won since its season opener proved otherwise. Dennis Schroeder scored 28 points and the injury-riddled Atlanta Hawks ended an eightgame losing streak, beating skidding Cleveland 117-115 yesterday. The Hawks hadn’t won since beating Dallas on October 18 and were missing five players, but the Cavaliers went down to yet another puzzling loss. James, who had 26 points and 13 rebounds, was soaking

his feet in a tub of ice water and had ice wraps on both knees and his right elbow following the game. He didn’t have an explanation for why there was no carry-over from Friday’s 130122 win over Washington. “That’s a question I cannot answer,” James said. “I was ready to go. A lot of the guys were ready to go. I cannot answer that question.” Cavaliers forward Kevin Love was taken to the hospital after leaving in the third quarter with an illness. The team announced that Love, who had four points and four rebounds in 19 minutes, was treated and released. The Cavaliers cut a 16-point deficit in the second half to two

They did not score their first basket in the period until more than five minutes had passed. The Clippers stormed all the way back to take the lead, but the Heat made the key free throws in the final seconds that Los Angeles could not, hanging on for a 104-101 victory. The Dolphins recovered an onside kick and came up with a takeaway when Oakland fumbled twice on a single play, but failed to convert either opportunity into points. LONDON FINALS UP NEXT FOR JACK SOCK AFTER PARIS MASTERS WIN By JEROME PUGMIRE Associated Press PARIS (AP) — After being one game away from going home early in the tournament, Jack Sock won the Paris Masters yesterday to qualify for the season-ending ATP Finals in London. Sock beat Filip Krajinovic 5-7, 6-4, 6-1. It is easily the biggest trophy so far in the 25-year-old American’s career. Before coming to Paris the 16th-seeded Sock didn’t even think of London. But after winning his first Masters title, he will be making the short trip to England to compete against Roger Federer and the other six who made it from the ATP race. “Coming in this week I had no idea I could even make London. It wasn’t in my head,” Sock said. “Incredible week. Hard to describe, honestly. I don’t think it’s really hit or soaked in yet.” Especially as on Wednesday, his mind was drifting way off somewhere. Deep into the third set against Britain’s Kyle Edmund — a tough opponent in the second round — Sock trailed 5-1. “I was thinking about my holidays ... I’m proud of myself for

fighting and getting through,” Sock said. “To come back from the deficit I was down and to have this trophy next to me now has been an incredible achievement.” Fast forward to Sunday and he now walks away from Paris with a check worth nearly $1 million and a jump up the rankings to No. 9. Sock already knows how he is going to approach the finals. “I’m going to swing big and play my game, like I always do,” he said. “Just enjoy the moment.” This was his fourth career title. He sealed victory on his first match point when Krajinovic, a Serbian qualifier ranked No. 77, sent a backhand long. Sock fell onto his back with his hands on his face, then jumped into the seating area to celebrate with his team. “I had some anxious sleep last night,” Sock said. “I was able to find that groove in the second and third (sets).” He is the first American winner here since Andre Agassi in 1999; and the first American winner of a Masters tournament since Andy Roddick at Miami in 2010. “I’ve had a rough season pretty much since, since March,” Sock said. “I just wanted to play some good tennis my last week and go start my offseason.”

He seemed to run out of energy in the third set. “I was not aggressive enough,” Krajinovic said. “He started to play better and better and I didn’t serve well.” Still, he will climb to No. 33 next week. “From (qualifying) I beat so many good guys, better ranking than me,” Krajinovic said.

“So it’s all positive coming home, finally having holidays after playing so many matches this year.” The first set was even, with Krajinovic looking a little sharper than Sock, who is also 25. Sock was 30-40 down in the 12th game, and Krajinovic had his first set point. He took it when Sock went for a typical cross-court winner on forehand and whipped his shot into the net. He responded well, upping his level in the second set as the momentum started to turn. Sock secured a crucial break in the third game of the decider with a superb forehand winner on the run, and then held for 3-1. Krajinovic was reeling and dropped his next service game when Sock hit a backhand crosscourt winner that flew past his outstretched racket. He was broken again when serving to stay in the match. Sock had nine aces and broke Krajinovic’s serve six times to compensate for the three times he dropped his own serve. Sock’s other titles this year were at Delray Beach, Florida and Auckland, New Zealand — both on outdoor hard courts.
