Lady Nathalie sinks, ‘Sailing Barber’ happy boat salvaged By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net

Johnson was upset over the weekend after his B class Lady in Red Lady Nathalie sunk in the waters in Montagu Bay during the second race of the Sir Durward Knowles 100 Regatta. After persistently complaining to the organisers of the regatta - held in honour of Sir Durward Knowles - Johnson thanked all of those, including Jimmy Lowe, Clyde Rolle and Keith Brown, who were able to finally get the boat on dry ground at Potter’s Cay dock. “I couldn’t sleep because that was my baby out in the water,” Johnson said. “She is the pride of the B class and I pleaded with the organisers to get it out of the water. That was their responsibility as the organisers of the regatta.”

When he got the news on Tuesday, Johnson said he wanted to “jump for joy. “My boat stayed out in the water from Saturday and I was concerned because I didn’t know when they will get it out,” he added.

Johnson also thanked Sir Durward for intervening and making sure that the committee got the boat out of the water. He said he only sailed in the regatta because he wanted to show his support to Sir Durward. “I wanted to win the regatta

for him, but the boat sunk,” Johnson said. “I was really disappointed because I knew we had a chance to win it. I am happy that they had the regatta for Sir Durward because he’s done a lot for the sport. “I know he’s done a lot for me and

has supported my regatta for years. I was in the boat with him at the start of the regatta in the 1980s when he showed me how to set up the buoy for the boats to sail around during the course of the race.” Johnson was referring to his ‘Catch Me If You Can’ St Valentine’s Massacre that he has staged on Montagu Bay every February for the past 30 years. “Every year that we have the regatta, we have gotten some assistance from Sir Durward,” Johnson said. “So I didn’t want to miss this regatta for anything in the world. Unfortunately, the boat sunk.” Ants Nest proved why she’s considered to be one of the fastest boats in the class by winning the B title over the Tari Ann. Johnson said he was confident that his Lady Nathalie would have been right in the mix. At the end of the regatta on Sunday, Johnson said he was happy to hear Prime

Dodgers force Game 7 By RONALD BLUM AP Baseball Writer LOS ANGELES (AP) — Joc Pederson sliced a drive over the left-field wall, pounded his chest and danced around the bases, taking as many twists and turns as this World Series itself. Of course, the Los Angeles Dodgers forced the Houston Astros to Game 7. Chris Taylor hit a tying double off Justin Verlander during a two-run rally in the sixth inning, Corey Seager followed with a goahead sacrifice fly and the Dodgers beat the Astros 3-1 last night to push this dramatic World Series to the ultimate game. Pederson homered in the seventh against Joe Musgrove, connecting off the right-hander for the second time in three games for the record 24th long ball of this Series. Pederson pranced all the way to the plate, pointing at the Dodgers’ dugout and rubbing his thumbs and index fingers together to indicate what a money shot it was. Yu Darvish starts today for the Dodgers, trying to win their first title since 1988, and Lance McCullers Jr for the Astros in the first World Series Game 7 ever at Dodger Stadium. Darvish was chased in the second inning of Game 2, when McCullers pitched Houston to a 5-3 victory. George Springer’s third-inning home run against starter Rich Hill had given a 1-0 lead to Verlander and the Astros, trying for the first title in their 56-season history. On Halloween night, a championship for a team with orange in its colours seemed appropriate. But it served only to set up the 10th blown lead of the Series, the fifth by Houston, as Verlander

fell to 9-1 with Houston. Dodgers relievers combined for 4 1/3 scoreless innings. Brandon Morrow retired Alex Bregman on a grounder to strand the bases loaded in the fifth, winner Tony Watson got Marwin Gonzalez to fly out with two on and two outs in the sixth, and Kenta Maeda escaped two-on trouble in the seventh when third baseman Justin Turner gloved Jose Altuve’s grounder and threw a one-hop throw that first baseman Cody Bellinger scooped just in time. After wasting a ninth-inning lead in Game 2 and losing Game 5, Kenley Jansen retired six straight batters for the save and ended by striking out 40-year-old pinchhitter Carlos Beltran. This will be the third World Series Game 7 in four years. Ten of the last 12 teams that won Game 6 to force a seventh game also won the title, but the Dodgers lost the previous six World Series in which they trailed 3-2. They have won just one of their six championships at home, in 1963. A heat wave over, the temperature dropped to 67 degrees at game time from 103 for last week’s opener. The San Gabriel Mountains were occluded by heavy clouds. Los Angelenos with a laid-back reputation were more energetic and on their feet for two-strike counts against Astros batters, a wave in Pantone 294 — also known as Dodger blue. game will be exciting - the Reefs’ fierce forward lines will be challenging the Hurricanes’ defensive skills. It will require strategic positional playing for the Hurricanes since the Reefs will be bringing their speed. At 8:45pm, the Sharks will be biting for their first win of the season as they take on the Potters Cay Pirates. The Pirates had a high scoring game last week, but only won by one goal. The Sharks’ loss last week means they will be ready for a fight today. This game will be one of consistently strong and accurate shots - the goalies are really going to be getting a lot of the action and game play. It will be fast-paced with the potential for a lot of quick goals. The Hurricanes are ranked first in the league, followed closely by the Pirates. Kevin Taylor (Pirates) is currently the top point player.

Minister Dr Hubert Minnis, in his address during the closing ceremonies, say that they intend to bring legislation to parliament to make sailing the national sport of the country. “The people look for the regatta to come to the islands because there’s no sport that can draw the crowd the way they do,” he said. “I remember when there was no motor on the boats to take the people from one island to the next. “It used to take about 21 days to travel. But we started to sail the boats in competition and that is how the regattas got started. We have regattas in just about every island, so it should be the national sport.” Johnson said it’s good that the announcement came during the celebrations of the Sir Durward Knowles 100 Regatta, which was held to coincide with the two-time Olympic sailing medallist, who will celebrate his 100th birthday on Thursday.

Crowds of over 13,000 each year in Nassau have watched the only current bowl game played outside of the United States. The inaugural game in 2014 saw WKU beat Central Michigan 49-48 in a memorable offensive shootout. In 2015, Western Michigan beat Middle Tennessee 45-31 and last year, Old Dominion held off Eastern Michigan 24-20. The game, held in Nassau’s 15,000-seat Thomas A Robinson National Stadium, will be broadcast in the United States for the fourth consecutive year by ESPN. VAN NIEKERK OUT FOR MONTHS AFTER INJURING RIGHT KNEE IN RUGBY GAME By GERALD IMRAY Associated Press CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) — South African runner Wayde van Niekerk was forced to put his honeymoon on hold to have surgery yesterday in the United States on a serious right knee injury he sustained while playing in a celebrity tag rugby game three weeks ago. The Olympic champion and world-record holder in the 400 metres is expected to be out of action for around 6-9 months and will miss the Commonwealth Games in Australia in April. Van Niekerk tore his anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus cartilage when he slipped and fell in the rugby game at a stadium in Cape Town, South Africa October 7. He was appearing in a tag game made up of South African celebrities ahead of the international rugby match between South Africa and New Zealand. He left the celebrity game after falling but van Niekerk didn’t think he’d injured himself so seriously at the time, and it took him a couple of days before he realised he needed scans, his manager, Peet van Zyl said. Van Zyl confirmed the diagnosis to The Associated

Press and said van Niekerk will have surgery at the Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colorado, later yesterday. “This is sport and these things happen,” van Niekerk said in a statement from his management company. “I trust that the team I have around me, including the medical professionals, will make this process as smooth as possible.” He also tweeted: “Thanks to all for the kind wishes! Sadly I announce now that I’ll be off the track for a while. Will be back stronger!” The clinic in Colorado was “No. 1 for knees,” manager van Zyl said. Van Zyl said he couldn’t give an exact period for how long van Niekerk, who is also a two-time world champion, would be out of action, but he would definitely miss the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, in April. Van Zyl said they were tentatively scheduling a return for van Niekerk in July or August but it would depend on the surgery and his rehabilitation. The 25-year-old van Niekerk will stay in Colorado for 2-3 weeks before heading to Doha, Qatar, for his rehabilitation. “I have faith that, God willing, I’ll be able to race

again later next year,” he said. “Full recovery is going to be crucial, so I’ll be patient, but I will work as hard as I can to get back on the track as soon as possible.” Van Zyl said they held back news of van Niekerk’s injury because of the athlete’s wedding in South Africa on Sunday. He then flew to the US on Monday. Van Niekerk delivered perhaps the most resounding performance of the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics when he won gold and broke Michael Johnson’s world record in the 400 in a breathtaking wire-to-wire run from lane eight. Johnson’s mark of 43.18 seconds had stood for 17 years. Van Niekerk has also raised the possibility that he could win major titles in the 100, 200 and 400 metres after his silver in the 200 at the worlds in August. He is the only athlete to run under 10 seconds for the 100, under 20 seconds in the 200, and under 44 seconds in the 400. He was going to run the 100 and 200 at the Commonwealth Games. Although he called the injury “unfortunate timing,” van Niekerk does have a year with no Olympics or world championships to recover.

Elite athlete subvention panel announced By ERIC ROSE Bahamas Information Services MINISTER of Youth, Sports and Culture Michael Pintard, in a press conference on Monday, thanked those who have helped to develop the elite athlete subvention programme on behalf of the ministry. He also saluted those who have benefitted from it over the years. The minister especially thanked those who are now a part of the newly-formed panel that is tasked with revising the programme. Said Minister Pintard at the Kendal Isaacs Gym: “During the various courtesy calls with various federations and associations, the ministry promised to work with them in revamping the subvention programme which has been a source of concern for many federations and athletes throughout the country. “Today we are here to announce the committee that has been assembled, who are already engaged in the work of revamping the subvention system.” This process is expected to take approximately six weeks.

Panel members include Director of Sports Tim Munnings, National Sports Authority (NSA) Chairman Vaughn Roberts, Senator Jennie Isaacs-Dotson, Consultant Grafton Ifill, Jr., Gold medalist Tonique Williams, Businessman and former elite athlete David Morley, Attorney Koschina Marshall, and the Bahamas Olympic Committee Chairman (once elected). Munnings pointed out that the elite athlete subvention scheme was created in 1996, primarily to assist with athletes returning to The Bahamas to compete. At that time, he said, only about six athletes benefitted. “Today, over 60 athletes are currently enrolled in the programme, benefitting from direct government financial assistance toward their competition and training expenses,” Mr Munnings said. “The Government of The Bahamas is pleased that the programme has contributed to the podium success of many of the participating athletes and we feel that through the improved management of the programme, we are confident that we will celebrate even more success of our athletes.”

Commonwealth of The Bahamas – having seen the exponential growth in sports in the country and the successes we have been experiencing across various sporting disciplines – is not in a position to provide what ideally we would love to provide by way of funding for all of the elite athletes in the country, however we are committed to doing our part,” Minister Pintard stated. “Furthermore, let me say that the purpose of sports

in The Bahamas – and certainly under this administration – is to not only develop elite athletes,” he added. “We have other objectives, as well.” Minister Pintard said that one of those objectives is to use sports as a “national development tool” to promote healthy living among Bahamians. An active lifestyle helps us in the fight against obesity and other non-communicable diseases. Secondly, Minister

Pintard noted that the Government believes that education is “absolutely” important and sports plays a key role in assisting many Bahamians who would have otherwise not been able to afford tertiary education by way of scholarships. “In addition, sports helps persons develop various characteristics that are essential for wholesome development.” He added that the Government believes that sports can generate employment and be a source of revenue for many Bahamian professionals. “We ask all of our elite athletes to continue to do well in your respective disciplines and demonstrate your commitment to The Bahamas.” He noted that it is not uncommon for many larger countries around the globe as they seek to lure elite athletes from other countries by offering forms of inducements. “In our case, we encourage you to remain focused, loyal, and nationalistic with respect to your country and we will do our part, within our financial capacity, to assist in your continued development,” Minister Pintard said.

Bogdanovic leads Pacers to 101-83 rout of Kings By PHILIP B. WILSON Associated Press INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A strong first-half allowed the Indiana Pacers starters to rest for most of the second half. Bojan Bogdanovic scored 17 points to lead a balanced Indiana offense and help the Pacers to a 101-83 rout of the Sacramento Kings on Tuesday night. The Pacers (4-3) scored the first nine points and built a 55-30 lead at the half. “We got to do some cheering today,” Pacers guard Victor Oladipo said of reserves receiving quality minutes in a blowout. Indiana second-year forward Domantas Sabonis, coming off a personal-best 22 points and 12 rebounds on Sunday, had a double-double in the first half with 10 points and 12 rebounds. He finished with a career-high 16 rebounds in addition to 12 points and five assists. Sabonis was actually sick the previous day. “I laid in bed and tried to recover and get ready for today,” he said. “I’m just coming out there and proving to people that I can play.” Pacers coach Nate McMillan was particularly pleased with his team meeting the per game goal of 25 assists. “We want that ball moving,” he said. “What we’re trying to do is create other opportunities to where we get open looks as opposed to contested shots. If we’re dishing out 25 assists or more, everybody is touching the ball and it’s very difficult to defend that type of movement.” Rookie guard De’Aaron Fox led the Kings (1-6) off the bench with 18 points. Fox has already matched the loss total in his only college season at Kentucky, which finished 32-6.

Major had a 634 high three game set to beat out runner-up Ritchie Pyfrom of Giga Tech with a 628 second high set. The high game was a 241 from Mario Brown of Ten Back Strikers followed by a 237 from Kevin B Williams of CDM Knights. Driskell Rolle of Asurewin Pocket Pleasers was the leader in the ladies division with a 235 high game and an outstanding 604 high three game set. THUNDER 110, BUCKS 91 MILWAUKEE (AP) — Paul George scored 20 points, and the Oklahoma City Thunder dominated the paint during a 16-0 run to take control early in a 110-91 win over the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday night. Russell Westbrook had 12 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists, while Carmelo Anthony scored eight of his 17 points in the pivotal first quarter. Oklahoma City went from down four to a 20-8 lead on George’s jumper with 4:16 left in the first. It was essentially over from there, especially with the way Westbrook kept finding driving lanes. The reigning MVP dished off to Steven Adams in the paint when he wasn’t taking it to the hoop himself. Adams finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Warren scored 14 of his 20 points during the final period for the Suns, who squandered an 18-point lead in the third quarter when Brooklyn went on a 17-0 run. ON THE REPLAY: Alcott Forbes missed the perfect game, but he guided the C&S Hitmen to a 7-0 shutout of the BTC Blazers as they clinched the Bahamas Softball Federation’s 2017 Rozina Taylor National Softball Championship men’s title. Forbes fired a no-hitter with 10 strike outs to produce a masterful performance on Sunday night in the Banker’s Field at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex. “This was what I wanted. I’ve been waiting on this for four years,” Forbes said. “I’ve been here to the finals three times in New Providence and I finally got it. I didn’t give up a single run in the tournament and I was working on a perfect game until we got the error in the fifth.”

CHUNG WINS IN PARIS MASTERS 1ST ROUND, NEXT PLAYS NADAL VANDEWEGHE OPENS By JEROME PUGMIRE Associated Press PARIS (AP) — Hyeon Chung of South Korea swept aside Mischa Zverev 6-0, 6-2 at the Paris Masters yesterday to set up a second-round match against Rafael Nadal. Nadal will begin his quest for a record 31st Masters title — but first in Paris — today. The top-ranked Spaniard beat Chung in their only previous encounter on his way to a 10th title at the Barcelona Open in April. Chung broke Zverev’s serve five times and saved the four break points he faced in a rout lasting less than one hour. The last two spots for the seasonending ATP Finals in London will be decided in Paris, while Nadal is odds-on to end the year as No. 1 for the fourth time in his career. Federer clinched his seventh title of the year, one more than Nadal, but is skipping Paris so he can stay fresh for London. Nadal was “not happy” about pulling out of the Swiss Indoors, but felt he needed the rest after playing 75 matches this season, winning 65 of them. By contrast, Federer has played only 53, winning 49. Vandeweghe overcame a slow start and two service breaks in the first set, recovering to finish with six aces and converting five of her eight break-point chances in the Bougainvillea group. “I wasn’t really making good contact with the ball, wasn’t really making enough balls in court, and I was just very sloppy at the start,” Vandeweghe said. “That allowed her to start well into the match, and I just had to keep fighting my way back.” Seventh-seeded Julia Goerges beat No. 10 Magdalena Rybarakova 6-1, 7-6 (5) in the Azalea group, while fourth-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova defeated Angelique Kerber 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 in the Rose group. Sir Durward Knowles 100 Regatta makes some waves in Montagu Bay

A RECORD-setting number of boats took to Montagu Bay this past weekend to celebrate the life and work of Sir Durward Knowles, one of the Bahamas’ most iconic sporting figures and the world’s oldest Olympian. The Sir Durward 100 Regatta - a joint effort by the National Family Island Regatta, the Bahamas Sailing Association and the Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources with responsibility for regattas - featured the top talents in sloop sailing and international sailing in the country. Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis was on hand at the event’s closing awards ceremony and said the celebration of Sir Durward’s legacy is a celebration of all things truly Bahamian. “He represents the very best of the Bahamian spirit. He is a patriot whose love of country has expressed itself and he has brought passion and generosity to every field of endeavours,” he said.
