lcott Forbes missed the perfect game, but he guided the C&S Hitmen to a 7-0 shutout as they clinched the Bahamas Softball Federation’s 2017 Rozina Taylor National Softball Championship men’s title. Forbes fired a no-hitter with 10 strike outs to produce a masterful performance last night in the Banker’s Field at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex. “This was what I wanted. I’ve been waiting on this for four years,” Forbes said. “I’ve been here to the finals three times in New Providence and I finally got it. I didn’t give up a single run in the tournament and I was working on a perfect game until we got the error in the fifth.”

Lady Wildcats come out on top By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net THE Sunshine Auto Wildcats capped off their successful year by adding the Bahamas Softball Federation’s 2017 Rozina Taylor National Softball Championship ladies’ title to their collection. They did it last night in the Bankers Field at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex with an impressive 11-3 triumph over the surprising Diamond Dolls from Abaco in an abbreviated five-inning affair. After trailing 3-1 going into the bottom of the first inning, the Lady Wildcats erupted for four runs in the bottom of the frame and six more in the fourth to hold off the Diamond Dolls, who couldn’t muster another run the rest of the game. “It feels good. We haven’t had it for three years. We won the pennant two years ago, we won
the pennant last year and we finished third this year. We had our struggles, we had our fights, but it didn’t affect our winning spirit,” said Sunshine Auto’s sponsor Deanza ‘Sonny’ Cox. Although he joined Cox in the team’s celebrations, manager Anthony Bullard admitted the victory hasn’t sunk in yet. “We are so excited that we won it,” he said. “I told Sonny that we were going to win this for him. He’s stuck with us through the good times and the bad times. He deserves it because he’s really been there for us when we were up and even when we were down.” Mary ‘Cruise’ Sweeting, closing out her long and illustrious career as she officially retired in style, tossed a four-hitter with two strike outs for the win. A RECORD-setting number of boats took to Montagu Bay this weekend to celebrate the life and work of Sir Durward Knowles, one of the Bahamas’ most iconic sporting figures and the world’s oldest Olympian. The Sir Durward 100 Regatta - a joint effort by the National Family Island Regatta, the Bahamas Sailing Association and the Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources with responsibility for regattas featured the top talents in sloop sailing and international sailing in the country. Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis was on hand at the event’s closing awards ceremony and said the celebration of Sir Durward’s legacy is a celebration of all things truly Bahamian. “He represents the very best of the Bahamian spirit. He is a patriot whose love of country has expressed itself and he has brought passion and generosity to every field of endeavours. To borrow the title of his bio he has been ‘Driven by The Stars.’ “He reminds us all that life is not only about making a living but more importantly about making a life worth living,” Dr Minnis said. “He has helped athletes, students, the disabled and countless others to be driven by their own stars and to pursue lives of passion and excellence. He has demonstrated the values and virtues of sportsmanship. His love of country and patriotism has been demonstrated for many years in his involvement with the One Bahamas Foundation. Thank you for all you have done for the country you have loved. The country returns this love to you with great gratitude and hearts full of emotion.”

team gave fans an early look at the development of the programme and reasons to be optimistic about the upcoming season. The Mingoes split their series with the visiting Florida College Falcons at the Kendal Isaacs Gym to commence The University’s Homecoming celebrations. The Mingoes took game one on Friday night 106-97 but suffered an 83-71 loss in the second game of the back-to-back. In game one, the Mingoes’ shooting from beyond the threepoint arch gave the team an early advantage and they withstood a late Falcons rally in the second half for the win. Justin Smith led UB with a team high 28 points, Kemsy Sylvestre had 20 points and eight rebounds, Ramon Dames scored 19 with nine rebounds and Christoph McKenzie chipped in with eight points. Kent Hegarty led five Falcons in double figures with a game
high 30 points. Austin Mills had 23, Jordan Benjamin scored 14, Jacob Roark finished with 11 and Jahkeal Samuel finished with 10. The Mingoes’ lead reached as much as 26 at one point but was reduced to just four in the fourth quarter before they pulled away. UB held a two possession lead at the end of the first (25-20) but broke the game open in the second following three of their 11 three pointers on the night. The Mingoes outscored the Falcons 37-20 and took a 62-40 lead at the half. UB continued to fire away from deep in the third quarter and made threes on three of their first five possessions. The Falcons recovered and went on a 10-0 run to cut the lead to just 12 headed into the fourth quarter. Roark’s three pointer in the fourth brought the Falcons within four but it would be as close as they would get as Sylvestre made
several key baskets down the stretch to keep the visitors at bay. As well as they shot the ball from three in game one, UB was as bad in game two and finished just 3-30 from beyond the arch on Saturday night. The Mingoes struggled offensively in game two and Sylvestre was the only player to shoot over 50 per cent from the field. He finished with a team high 25 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Stubbs had 13 points but shot just 1/12 from three-point range. McKenzie added 12 points but was 0-6 from deep. Mills led a balanced scoring attack for the Falcons with 15 points in the wire-to-wire win. They led by as much as 30 at one point due to an 18-0 spurt in the second quarter. It was another successful homecoming outing for the programme. In 2016 as they prepared to complete the transition toward university status, the College of
the Bahamas protected home court in their last act as the Caribs, completing a successful two-game sweep over the Trinity College Bantams. They completed the sweep with a 72-69 win in the finale led by Smith’s 28 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Sylvestre finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds, Dames filled the stat sheet with six points, five rebounds and five steals. The Falcons compete in the Southern States Division of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. The Mingoes’ attention will now shift to the local scene as they prepare for the upcoming New Providence Basketball Association season. Last year, the Mingoes finished the regular season with a 12-5 record but were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Mail Boat Cybots, who eventually went on to win the title.

Winners in the sloop sailing segment of the regatta included A Class - Red Stripe; B Class - Ants Nest; C Class - It Ain’t Right and E Class - Judgement Day. The regatta also featured international Olympic-style boats in the regatta with participation from all of the clubs across the country. This field will feature Optimist sailing for children aged 8-15, Sunfish, Laser, International 420s and Snipes. This segment featured 81 boats making it the largest event including international sailing the Bahamas has ever hosted. Winners included Optimist (Green Fleet) - Anton Gotberg; Optimist (Championship Fleet) Jackson Parker; International 420 - Joshua Reach, Jackson Parker;
Sunfish - George Damianos, Laser - Keir Clarke; Snipe - Cochise Burrows and Lori Lowe. National Family Island Regatta Executive Danny Strachan said he hopes further honours will be bestowed upon Knowles. “Let’s thank the Knowles family for giving us the pleasure of hosting this regatta in Sir Durward’s honour. While he could not be present for the finale, when we come here next year for the Sir Durward 101 Regatta I hope we are sailing in ‘Sir Durward Harbour’ and I hope I have a $100 bill with his image on it,” he said. “We had a very short window to put this on and it goes to show what can happen when we put our heads together.” Lori Lowe of the Bahamas Sailing Association said Sir Durward’s story and spirit continues
to serve as an inspiration. “It’s an honour to be a part of this event to honour a man who is not only a sports legend but one in the annals in aiding Bahamians. His tenaciousness got him Olympic medals and drove him to aid his people with a smile and a kind word, he sometimes did it with an insult and a smile,” she said. “He talked about how he got his gold medals and I think we all can learn a lesson from people who stick to it and continue to try. One lesson we can learn from his story is that you can come from nowhere and get to the top and we have plenty of examples of that in our country.” Minister of Agriculture and Marine Resources Renward Wells, whose portfolio includes responsibilities for
regattas, outlined the impact that he expects the regatta will have. “Too often we are not given our due while we are alive and it is so wonderful to see a man who has lived for nearly 100 years, the world’s oldest Olympian, made the Bahamas proud through his life, had an impact on my life as a track and field athlete and contributed to many others who have gone on to Olympic and world championships fame. You never know how far your contribution can go or boost the person you are assisting, but I say with certainty that it is because of individuals like Sir Durward and their contribution I can stand here as the Minister of Agriculture and Marine Resources. The legendary Olympic sailor will celebrate his 100th birthday on November 2 and competition
in the free-for-all regatta serves as a means of “giving back and saying thank you” to Knowles, the oldest living Olympic champion in the world. Sir Durward was present at the regatta for much of Saturday evening to award the winners of the essay competition so was not present for the finale, but his daughter Charlotte accepted the honour of the regatta on behalf of the family. “He is thrilled to bits with all this attention. He is in his glory,” she said. “I want to thank the committee that worked behind the scenes. He is so excited with the 100th birthday celebrations. I want to say thank you to the sailors. I can’t tell you how much this means to our family and we really appreciate you coming out to do what you do in honour of him.”

George Knowles, the manager of the Diamond Dolls, said they just simply got beat by a more experienced team. “We had some injures that shut us down and after we fell behind, the experience of the Wildcats just came through,” Knowles said. “But we played to get here to the final and we came out here and they just outplayed us. But we will be back next year.” The Lady Wildcats, undefeated during the round robin, advanced to the final with a 7-5 win over the Diamond Dolls. In the bronze medal game, the Diamond Dolls came back to pound the Andros’ Navigators 13-2 to secure their berth in the final. After they scored two more runs in the fourth with one out and Philip Johnson on first, BTC brought in Darren Mortimer to replace starter on the mound and he immediately walked Forbes. But Mortimer got Martin Burrows to fly out and Angelo Dillett to pop up. Forbes, meanwhile, struck out all of the batters he faced except three. In the second inning with two out, Quinton Cooper grounded out, Lynden Richardson popped up to start the third and Leon Cooper opened the fourth with a pop up as well. But in the fifth, Forbes’ perfect game was broken when Quinton Rolle hit a grounder that Philip Johnson misjudged. But Forbes went on to hold on for the shutout. BTC’s manager Desmond ‘Big Country’ Dean said they fought very hard and while they lost, he was very proud of their effort, considering that the team got started playing fast pitch very late. “We played a very good team against an awesome pitcher,” Dean said. “Alcott is a very good friend of mine, but he was really on his game tonight. They deserve to win. We just got beat by a better
team. But I’m proud of my guys.” The Blazers had two impressive showing in the tournament, upsetting the Hitmen 6-3 before they dethroned the two-time defending champions Five Star Bulldogs out of Abaco 3-2 to get into the final. “It was disappointing knowing that we won it the last two years, but in order to do it again we knew we had to play defence and we didn’t,” said Bulldogs’ ace pitcher Lyle Sawyer. “I felt I pitched good enough for us to win, but defence was the key.” Sawyer assured their rivals that they will make the necessary adjustments during the offseason and they will be back to regain their crown next year. • Here’s a summary of the games played: Blazers 3, Bulldogs 2: Quinton Cooper led off the fourth with a single, advanced to second on Hakeem Stuart’s ground out and scored the winning run on a two-out error that put Michael Sweeting on base. Again in the fifth with one out, Mark Douglas got a hit and Metrus Lightbourn walked, but Forbes got the next two batters out, including the final one as pinch hitter William Weatherford hit a grounder that Hosea Hilton fielded on his knees and got the throw to Forbes at first to end the game. Forbes finished with a two-hitter and 10 strike outs for the win. In a pitching dual, Lyle Sawyer had a no-hitter with seven strike outs. Philip Johnson and Martin Burrows got on base on a one-out error and twoout hit by pitch respectively and scored the Hitmen only two runs on a wild pitch and error in the first inning.
The Blazers were scheduled to play the Blue Water Jets out of Eleuthera, but they didn’t show up. Earlier in the day, the Jets forfeited to the Bulldogs after the BSF refused to allow Wayde Weinburger Jr to play because their constitution state that a player has to play in the regular season or postseason in order to play in the nationals. The Blue Waters content that Weinburger Jr was off to school and when he returned home to play in the Eleuthera Softball Association, the games were rained out. - Here’s a summary of the games played in the round robin: Bulldogs 4, Blazers 3: Lyle Sawyer and Max Albury came up with the tying and winning runs to power the 5-Stars to victory. Lavaughn Ferguson went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Sawyer tossed a three-hitter with nine strike outs for the win. Quinton Copper got the loss on five hits with 10 strike outs. Desmond Russell was 1-for-1 with a run scored. Hitmen 2, Jets 0: Rashad Seymour was 1-for-2 with two RBI and Hosea Hilton went 1-for-3 with a RBI and run scored to lead C&S. Alcott Forbes threw a two-hitter with nine strike outs, while Edney ‘the Heat’ Bethel got the loss on

TEAM BAHAMAS’ ‘OVERALL PERFORMANCE WAS EXCELLENT’ AN important milestone was achieved by the Bahamas Judo Federation as Cynthia Rahming defeated the Guatemalan champion at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) qualifying event in the Dominican Republic this past weekend. The team consisted of athletes Desmond Bootle (-60kg), Joshua Mcfall (-73kg), Kentico Forbes (-81Kg), and Cynthia Rahming (-57kg). The team was coached by D’Arcy Rahming Jr, High Performance Director of the BJF, and Amarilis Savon, three-time Olympic medalist. “Their overall performance was excellent. The best we have ever had from a national team in many
areas, especially preparation and time in competition,” said delegation head D’Arcy Rahming Jr. Joshua Mcfall defeated the Panamian champion before falling to the Guadeloupe champion and receiving a 9th place finish overall. Desmond Bootle went the distance with his opponent but was unable to throw him. Kentico Forbes lost to El Salvador. Cynthia Rahming’s defeat of Guatemala ensured a 7th place finish at the qualifier. The top eight positions qualify for CAC. She lost a close match to the Dominican Republic in the repechage. “I would like to have medalled but I am happy to have qualified,” Cynthia Rahming said.

Steelers get 20-15 win over Lions By LARRY LAGE Associated Press DETROIT (AP) — JuJu Smith-Schuster scored on a 97-yard touchdown pass from Ben Roethlisberger late in the third quarter and the Pittsburgh Steelers forced the Detroit Lions to turn the ball over on downs twice in a 20-15 win last night. The AFC North-leading Steelers (6-2) go into their bye week with a three-game winning streak. Detroit (3-4) was coming off its bye and lost a third straight and fourth in five games. Pittsburgh’s defence put up a curtain in front of it end zone, forcing the Lions to settle for field goals. When they went for touchdowns, the Steelers stopped them. Detroit coach Jim Caldwell chose to go for it on fourth down from the Steelers 1 trailing by one in the third quarter. Matthew Stafford was sacked as he stepped up out of a collapsing pocket and tried to run up the middle. A snap after missing wide-open tight end Jesse James on the ensuing drive, Roethlisberger dropped
back into his end zone and perfectly lofted a pass to Smith-Schuster. The rookie receiver ran for about 70 yards after the catch, running past cornerback Quandre Diggs and pulling away from safety Glover Quin on his way to the end zone. Matt Prater kicked his fifth field goal on the next possession after Caldwell didn’t want to go for it on another fourth down from the Pittsburgh 1, drawing boos from a crowd that included a lot of black-andyellow clad, towel-twirling fans cheering for the visitors. Puel has instant impact at Leicester, Brighton in 1-1 draw By SAM JOHNSTON Associated Press LONDON (AP) — After seeing the instant impact of Claude Puel at Leicester, Everton might be looking to appoint a permanent manager sooner rather than later. Leicester was reinvigorated on Sunday by Puel’s altered team selection and tactics, as it produced a devastating counter-attacking goal on its way to a 2-0 victory over Everton in the English Premier League. The recalled Demarai Gray went on a stunning run from the edge of his own box to help set up Leicester’s first goal by Jamie Vardy, before adding a slightly fortuitous second himself. Former Everton player David Unsworth is in caretaker charge of the Toffees following Ronald Koeman’s dismissal, but his side’s
display against Leicester will have done little for his aspirations to land the role on a permanent basis. A fourth game without a win, three of which have been losses, saw Everton stay in the relegation zone with eight points from its opening 10 games. Also, Puel’s former side Southampton drew 1-1 at Brighton, extending both sides’ unbeaten runs in the Premier League to three games. GRAY DELIVERS Unhappy at making just nine Premier League starts last season, Gray almost left Leicester during the summer. The Foxes will be relieved they turned down significant transfer offers to keep hold of the 21-year-old. Despite that show of faith, Gray had started just one league game this season under Craig Shakespeare,
who was fired by Leicester earlier in October. In his first game in charge, Puel adjusted Leicester’s shape, moving Riyad Mahrez into a more central position to make space for Gray on the wing. It took the England under21 international just nine minutes to reward his new manager. Gray picked up the ball on the edge of his own box, using his pace to evade Tom Davies before skipping past the challenge of Idrissa Gueye and releasing Mahrez with a perfectly weighted pass down the right side. Mahrez matched Gray’s precision as he crossed into the path of Vardy, who was never going to miss from close range. All it took was one clutch shot. The Pacers’ new starting guard knocked down a stepback 3-pointer with 10 seconds left to complete a late rally and give Indiana a rare 97-94 victory over San Antonio. “It was a little deep, a little too deep,” he said. “Honestly, I didn’t really want to shoot it that far but the move felt good and I just made my follow through. Four-time All-Star Paul George had 15 go-ahead shots in the final 20 seconds of games during his career with the Pacers — and missed all 15. Oladipo had no trouble making the first with his new team. In fact, the two guys Indiana acquired from Oklahoma City in last summer’s widelypanned deal for George, became the catalysts in only the Pacers’ third win over the Spurs since 2007. BASEL, Switzerland (AP) — Roger Federer finally beat Juan Martin del Potro in a Swiss Indoors final, winning 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-3 yesterday to go clear in second place on the Open era title list. Federer’s 95th ATP tournament win — the eighth in his hometown Basel event where he was once a ballboy — lifted him out of a tie with Ivan Lendl, trailing only Jimmy Connors who has 109. The top-seeded Federer succeeded on the same court where he lost the 2012 and 2013 Basel finals to del Potro. Federer rallied from a break down in the decisive set and clinched when the fourth-seeded Argentine sent a service return long. Trailing in the second set, the 36-year-old Swiss had slammed his racket on the net cord in frustration when wasting a break-point chance. Federer improved to 7-1 in finals this season. They include his previous event, the Shanghai Masters two weeks ago, and Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

The Dane completed the victory with a backhand down the line on a second match point for her 60th match victory of the season. The 27-year-old Wozniacki’s best previous result at the WTA Finals was reaching the final in 2010. Williams, who was hoping to win a 50th career title on Sunday, is the only player at this year’s WTA Finals who didn’t win a title during the season. The 37-year-old Williams appeared in three finals at the five most prestigious tournaments of the season: the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and here in Singapore. Williams, who won the WTA Finals title in 2008, had won all seven previous matches against Wozniacki. “Eight is my lucky number so I was hoping if I was going to beat her at least once in my career it would be today,” Wozniacki said. “I just went out there and did my best.” Wozniacki raced to a 5-0 lead in the second set before Williams mounted a late comeback attempt. “I didn’t seem to come up with my best tennis until it was too late,” Williams said.

That might be a good plan.” Woznicki dropped serve when she was serving for the first set at 5-3, and then dropped serve when serving for the match in the seventh and ninth games of the second set. “I’m still shaking,” Wozniacki said. “I was up 5-0 and then Venus started upping her game. She went for her shots, started serving into my body. I’m just so happy I managed to win in the end.”

(AP) Sticking to a schedule that avoids playing back-toback weeks, Federer later Sunday pulled out of the Paris Masters which starts today and will focus on the ATP Finals starting November 12 in London. That decision by the No. 2-ranked Federer all but assures the end-of-season No. 1 status for Rafael Nadal who is top-seeded in Paris. Victory Sunday lifted Federer to a 18-6 lifetime record against del Potro, who has a 3-2 edge over Federer in finals. Federer served for the first set with a 5-4 lead — before del Potro immediately broke back — and let a 3-0 lead slip in the tiebreaker.

Del Petro reeled off six straight points in the tiebreaker, including one after a 23-shot exchange, then clinched with his third set point keyed by a strong serve. Both players had breakpoint chances early in the second set, and Federer hit his racket on the net cord after spurning his with a backhand volley sent wide. Federer gifted del Potro a chance to break with two double faults but held with strong serves. Forcing two set points on del Potro’s serve, Federer took the second when seeing his opponent’s baseline forehand fly long. They traded service breaks to open the decisive set, and Federer stood head bowed for several seconds with his hands on the net when a wild forehand gifted del Potro his chance. On the next point, Federer netted a backhand volley to fall behind 1-0, though soon levelled with a fierce forehand winner. Federer broke again for a 3-1 lead and served out the rest of the match under little pressure.
