Facing my Goliath

I

killed a centipede the other day. I walked into the space, turned on the light and we both froze. Sizing each other up, as it were. Somehow recognising that at least one of us wouldn’t make it out of the situation alive. Instantaneously, I had to make a decision. It was either it or me. I grabbed the nearest broom, held the creature down between the bristles and the floor and stomped as if my life depended on it! At first, the stomps came one at a time – all measured and ladylike. And that thing almost wriggled free! For a while, we continued. Broom, stomp, escape. Broom, stomp, escape... But then I started to think what if when I move this broom again, this thing escapes to some forbidden corner of the room where I can’t get at it? That thought spurred me to frenzied stomping action. I was determined to end this victoriously. The poor centipede didn’t stand a chance. And finally, it was done. My foot ached, my forehead glistened with perspiration, the broom handle even broke under the frantic force of my foot; but my arch enemy was no more. RIP centipede! Why am I making such a big deal about this? It’s simply, really. A few years ago, the sight of a centipede invading my personal space sent me screaming in the opposite direction. It crippled me with anxiety and upended my entire day. Now, although the fear persists, it’s no longer something that I will allow to threaten my peace of mind. I saw the problem and effectively dealt with it. Of course, I draw a parallel to one of my favorite Bible characters, David. When Goliath threatened the armies of God, David – basically a delivery guy with sheep dung under his fingernails (obviously, not obeying our strict handwashing protocols) came on the scene, and I see myself in both reactions to the

DAVID and Goliath. irreverent Philistine. The past me was, of course, the Israelite army, cowering in fear. The new me – David – courageous in the face of certain death. But David, unlike the army, didn’t just focus on what was before him. He allowed memories of past victories to remind him of one thing: If God did it before, He can certainly do it again! This week’s article doesn’t begin any series. I honestly didn’t even know what I

would write. But I woke with such assurance and faith this week, I had to share it. David’s bravery had nothing to do with the armor he would wear. The Bible tells us that though he tried, it didn’t really fit. It had nothing to do with the weapons he would wield. I mean – a sling and stones- not really battlefield tested. But there was something else. An inner peace that he had already conquered a

lion and a bear, and no doubt, had encountered many other issues out there in the wilderness tending his flock. Each victory, no matter how big or small, had prepared him for this moment. Somehow the wilderness experience changed him, matured him, shifted him from shepherd to warrior. I guess it’s the same for all of us. Each time we kill a bug, or face a fear, meet insurmountable odds and come through it, we are preparing for victory over something that would have once held us frozen in terror. Each situation making us bolder, more intuitive, ready for battle! David courageously quoted that day, “God will deliver this uncircumcised Philistine into my hands...” And He did. Concerning the centipede: I could have run away, called for help, used bug spray, but there was no time. So, I did what David did. I reminded myself of how I had grown over the years, my dread lessening a little with each victory, until I was able to overcome my phobia and slay my enemy. I dare say you have that strength within you, too. For me it was “centipede-o-phobia.” For you, it may be something else. But remind yourself – you have succeeded in tough spots already, you have won in the past, and if God did it before, He can certainly do it again! God bless you this week.

We Are Blessed BY CARLOS SPENCER WE are told in James 1:2 (KJV) “My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations.” Very simply, there is joy associated with what we hear, speak and do during life’s difficult moments. We will inevitably face trials in life but this should be embraced by the believer as something positive. Believers are encouraged to respond with bravado and joy when they encounter twists and turns along life’s path. Psalm 146:5 (KJV) tells us “Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob as his help, whose hope is in the Lord his God.” Whilst the Apostle Paul writes about the inner saving faith, James focuses on outward serving. Both individuals demonstrate how we can relate to each other despite disparate circumstances. Suffering creates perseverance, and perseverance builds character and character enables us to have hope. Paul tells us in Romans 5:3-4 (KJV) “And not only so, but we glory in tribulations: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; and patience, experience; and experience, hope:” When viewed in its entirety, we are blessed, notwithstanding the challenges that we face. As believers in Christ, we should seek to glorify God at all times. Suffering and challenges should cause us

to consider eternal life and access to God, and our relationship with Him. It should also enable us to appreciate that forgiveness of sins is freely available to anyone who repents and humbles themself before God. James 4:7 (KJV) admonishes us to “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” We cannot escape the challenges that will surely come our way in life. However, we can count it all joy and embrace such trials as we journey to a new and higher level. We are blessed. 1 Peter 3:14 (KJV) tells us “But and if ye suffer for righteousness’ sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled;” Amen. Thanks be to God for the sharing of His word.

OPING to heal those wounded and hurting, the CHAMPS organisation (Chosen, Honoured, Appointed, Motivated, Positive Sisters) presented its “Pathway to Healing” virtual event that saw hundreds take par. Virtual events have been the go to for the organisation during recent times as it believes it must carry out its mandate even more now than ever. Samita Ferguson, president of the group, said the event was necessary to give those who have been feeling hopeless a ray of light. “The inspiration behind my latest CHAMPS Pathway of Healing was based on the dynamics of the period in which we presently live,” she said. “There are so many wounds that persons are walking around with; wounds of of job loss, grief due to deaths, financial woes, mental instability, there are people who are longing for hope, people are left broken as a result of these facets just mentioned.

“When tossing with the theme, my mind resonated on the short film Broken, which I wrote and produced and was filmed by Gary Wong. I immediately thought about the purpose behind the film which was to feature various families who went through a period of brokenness and who also went through a process of healing,

hope and love. I said to myself the message is still relevant. If one’s mindset is to shift and not allow their circumstances to deter or to state their final end; they too can be healed. There is a saying that trouble does not last allows; and we quote on numerous occasion that God gives us beauty for ashes,” she said. “Pathway of Healing” featured the cast from “Broken” speaking about the film and how it resonated to periods in their lives in which they were broken. “One cast member named Indira Archer shared how during the period of the film she was still going through a process of healing, healing that was needed as a result of a losing her husband three months prior to the airing of ‘Broken’ and then Pastor Pascal Saunders, another cast member, shared how he had experience losing a family member around the time of the film as well,” Mrs Ferguson told Tribune Religion. The featured speaker of the event was Keisha Russell, who also shared her experience of

being broken after losing her spouse. “Keisha lost her husband this year and four months later her mother. The aim of the event was to once again bring hope and tranquility and to impact lives in a positive way; to remind individuals that we will all go through our trials and pain, but if we trust in God he will never make us ashamed and that he will bring us out. This is the time and the season to put one’s hope in Abba Father, who is a miracle worker and promise keeper,” she said. Mrs Ferguson said she received a tremendous amount of feedback from those who tuned in. What was most heart warming for her was those who said they felt encouraged and uplifted. “The main takeaway is one will weep due to the pathway of pain; but at the end of the journey if one preserves the pathway to healing will be more accessible. As a result one will readily change their narrative and at the end of the road they will say; ‘look at me I did not cave in I

Another good thing to come out of the virtual event was the response to the film. “The response was tremendous, person were wanting more and are requesting part two; also one of our Caribbean islands wants to feature it in their women ministry group. I am grateful to the father above that the message was received and lives were uplifted and transformed. This is the purpose behind the story and the goal for future films like ‘Broken’. The cast and film director were tremendous; we are excited about other projects that will transpire in the very near future,” she said.
