he five-day World Junior Judo Championships concluded last night at the Atlantis resort’s Imperial Ballroom with Japan once again emerging as the top team in the standings. A total of 427 judokas, including 241 men and 186 women from five continents and 67 countries, participated in the event. Japan defeated Brazil 5-1 in the final to claim the gold medal in the mixed team final block. Matches featured eight individual contests. Brazil won silver while Kazakhstan and Russia won bronze. The final members of Team Bahamas competed in their individual events on Saturday. Sasha Ingraham was defeated by Mercedesz Szigetvari of Hungary in Pool C of the +78kg division. Szigetvari eventually won Pool C. In Pool D of the -90kg, Daleon Sweeting lost to Tim Schmidt in the opening round. Schmidt would go on to lose in the Pool Semifinals to teammate Falk Petersilka. Lyle Sherman lost in the first round in Pool A of the -81kg to Muhammet Koc of Turkey. Also in the division, Desmondo Bootle was defeated by Victor Gonzalez of Argentina. IJF Sport Director Daniel Florin Lascau shared his technical views on the five-day Junior World Championships moments after the tournament concluded with victory for Japan in the mixed team event. “The technical level of the young judoka has been very different to what we’re accustomed to. On one side we have athletes with skills and it’s the first time they have faced this level of competition, while on the other hand we have names who are already competing on IJF World Judo Tour. “What makes the difference between here and seniors is the direct taking of kumi-kata grips at the junior level. Juniors are more dedicated, they go and take the grips,” he said, “In terms of the accuracy of the techniques, some of these athletes are still in the learning process and therefore

SAMMY HUNTER COMMITS TO OLE MISS REBELS By RENALDO DORSETT Tribune Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net SAMMY Hunter became the latest Bahamian basketball product to join the Ole Miss Rebels programme for the Fall 2019 campaign. Hunter announced his decision via social media Saturday night while on his official visit to the Rebels in Oxford, Mississippi. He decided on the Rebels between his final three of the Oklahoma Sooners and Kansas State Wildcats. He was the third Bahamian to join Ole Miss basketball within the last year. Franco Miller signed with Ole Miss in the 2018 class and is set to begin his freshman season next month. The women’s basketball programme is also headed

SHE entered the Texas Longhorns programme as a heralded freshman and now Lashann Higgs is headed into her senior season projected to be one of the top players in the Big 12 conference. Higgs was named to the 10-member Preseason All-Big 12 Team when the conference announced its Preseason honours as well as preseason player, freshman and newcomer of the year for the 2018-19 women’s basketball season. The awards are chosen by head coaches who are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes. Higgs was joined on the team by Longhorns teammate Joyner Holmes,

‘Tum Tum’ in Phoenix Suns’ player development role By RENALDO DORSETT Tribune Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net THE post playing career for Lourawls “Tum Tum” Nairn Jr begins on the staff with the Phoenix Suns. Nairn has joined the Suns front office with a role in player development this season, giving him an opportunity to work alongside fellow Bahamian national team member Deandre Ayton. The former Michigan State Spartans guard also recently announced the completion of his first book, an autobiography entitled “Purpose Driven.” The book details the story of Nairn’s life and his journey from the Bahamas to elite Division I NCAA basketball and beyond. “I did not write Purpose Driven

for people to look at what I went through and say, ‘Wow Tum has been through a lot.’ I wrote it because I wanted people to read what I went through and reflect on what they are going through and say, ‘If Tum can make it through what he went through, I can make it through what I’m going through.’” Nairn posted on Instagram. “By the grace of God, writing this book has been one of my greatest accomplishments yet. I pray you are all inspired and motivated to never give up no matter what you’re going through. You’re going through it, you don’t have to stay there! So don’t stop! Stay tuned for the release date! Stay Purpose Driven.” Nairn’s final season for the Michigan State Spartans ended with an upset loss in the NCAA Tournament’s Round of 32, but

Nairn was still able to exhibit the leadership that made him a star in the eyes of the coaching staff during his tenure in East Lansing. He was also a member of the 2015 Final Four team as a freshman, and offered words of insight in the locker room following the loss to place the game in perspective. A former CR Walker Knight, Nairn was also a member of the Bahamian national team at the both the junior and senior levels. He finished his high school career with the Sunrise Christian Academy Buffaloes in Bel Aire, Kansas. “Ten years ago today, I did the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life. At the age of 13 I left home in the Bahamas to follow my dreams of playing basketball. I had no idea what was going to happen, but I took

a leap of faith and left my entire family to go to a place I had never been before. I was determined to make the best out of any situation or circumstance that came my way. Early mornings, late nights. Blood, sweat, and many tears,” Nairn said. “Nothing could stop me from chasing my dreams and actually catching them. There were times I wanted to quit. There were times it seemed like nothing good was going to come out of it. But I kept going. The journey definitely wasn’t easy but my hunger to achieve my goals motivated me more than the fear of failure. MAHOMES TORCHES BENGALS FOR 4 TDS AS CHIEFS ROLL, 45-10 By DAVE SKRETTA AP Sports Writer KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — One of the few things Patrick Mahomes hadn’t done in his young career was bounce back from a loss. He made that look just as easy as Mahomes does everything else. The Chiefs’ young record-setting quarterback threw for 358 yards and four touchdowns last night, Kareem Hunt finished with three scores and Kansas City rebounded from a lastsecond loss in New England by throttling the Cincinnati Bengals 45-10. Mahomes was 28 of 39 with his only big mistake an underthrown interception, though the Chiefs (6-1) were already so far ahead of Cincinnati (4-3) by that point it didn’t really matter. He spread the wealth, too, connecting with eight targets. Tyreek Hill had seven catches for 68 yards and a touchdown, and Demetrius Harris hauled in the other TD catch. The Bengals’ Andy Dalton was held to just 148 yards passing with a touchdown and an interception by the NFL’s worst defence. Joe Mixon managed just 50 yards rushing.

The Chiefs, wearing their all-red uniforms for the prime-time matchup, flexed some rare defensive muscle to open the game, creating a three-and-out for their first forced punt in 17 possessions. Mahomes and Hunt immediately went to work. With their quarterback shredding the Bengals’ depleted backfield, and Hunt making the rest of the defence look downright foolish, the Chiefs marched 95 yards for a score. Hunt capped it with a short TD grab, but it was his play immediately before that set social media ablaze. Hunt spun loose from a clutch of Bengals, then hurdled safety Jessie Bates on a 21-yard run . Mahomes connected with Hunt again early in the second quarter, when the Pro Bowl running back left Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict grasping at air on his way to the end zone. And he answered a TD toss by Dalton with one to Harris as the Chiefs took a 24-7 lead into halftime. Run the ball and protect the lead? Nah. Mahomes opened the second half by hitting Sammy Watkins for 50 yards. And six plays later, Hunt punched it in from

Harris celebrated his score by jumping into a camera well and using it as a foxhole while chucking the football as if it were a grenade. Hill fainted at the foot of an official and got CPR from offensive lineman Eric Fisher after his score, then reeled off a backflip before sprinting to the sideline. The Bengals certainly

weren’t enjoying it. They got dinged for a pair of personal fouls down the stretch, including a late helmet-to-helmet hit on Hunt by safety Shawn Williams. STATS AND STREAKS The Bengals are 3-16 on Sunday night, losing nine straight. ... Mahomes has 22 TD passes and three picks this season. ... Kansas City has won 13 straight when its defence scores.

NBA suspends Ingram, Rondo, Paul in Lakers-Rockets brawl By BETH HARRIS AP Sports Writer LOS ANGELES (AP) — Lakers teammates Brandon Ingram and Rajon Rondo and Chris Paul of the Rockets were suspended without pay yesterday for an oncourt fight, with Paul taking the heaviest financial hit. Ingram was suspended four games, Rondo will sit out three games and Paul two games. The NBA handed down the punishments a day after the incident in the fourth quarter at Staples Center. The penalty was costliest to Paul, who was fined a total of $491,782. Paul is president of the NBA Players’ Association. He began serving his suspension last night and wasn’t at the arena when the Rockets played the Clippers. Rondo will be docked a total of $186,207, while Ingram’s total is $158,816. Houston coach Mike D’Antoni disagreed with the severity of Paul’s penalty. “It’s just not equitable,” he said. “If you wanted to suspend him one (game) I get it, just to make a statement. Then you’re talking monetarily, he’s paying three times more than the other guys are paying for missing games? That doesn’t seem to be right.” Ingram and Rondo will start their suspensions tonight when the Lakers host the San Antonio Spurs. The league said Ingram was suspended for aggressively escalating the altercation and throwing a punch in the direction of Paul, confronting referee Jason Phillips in a hostile manner, and instigating the overall incident by shoving Rockets guard James Harden.

Eric Gordon, who started in place of Paul against the Clippers, defending his teammate, saying, “If somebody is attacking you, you got to somewhat protect yourself.” Rondo has been suspended for instigating a physical altercation with Paul, and spitting and throwing multiple punches at the Rockets star. Paul was suspended for poking at and making contact with Rondo’s face and throwing multiple punches at him. “What is he supposed to do? Just stand there and get spit on and then take a punch in the face and say, ‘Well, that’s OK,’” said D’Antoni, who called Rondo’s spitting “pretty disgusting.” “In the heat of the moment when somebody does that, that’s tough, that’s really tough,” D’Antoni said. The Rockets led 109-108 with 4:13 remaining when Ingram fouled Harden and then shoved him and confronted Phillips after getting a technical foul. Ingram, Paul and Rondo were all ejected. Houston won 124-115, spoiling the Lakers’ home debut for LeBron James. Harden didn’t speak to reporters before Sunday night’s game. “We don’t want this to happen again,” said NBA executive vice president Kiki VanDeWeghe, who handed down the penalties. “(We are) sending a clear message that this is not acceptable behaviour and you cannot do this. So in this particular instance, the multiple-game suspensions are pretty severe both to their teams and financially to the players.” The suspension to Ingram is the longest for an on-court incident since

Harden, who was then playing for Oklahoma City, in a game also at Staples Center to earn that penalty, the irony being Harden is the one who Ingram fouled to start Saturday’s fracas. There have been longer suspensions in recent years, but none for an oncourt altercation than what Ingram got. “We have so few of these and we’re very lucky in that regard,” VanDeWeghe said. “This game is played with a lot of passion and it’s an aggressive game and obviously there is contact in the game. Our players play with a lot of respect for each other and for everybody else.” With Paul and Rondo, that hasn’t always been the case. They have a history

of raising the ire of the other, going back to at least 2009 during a Boston-New Orleans game. Rondo was with the Celtics and Paul with the Hornets when players from both sides had to get between the two point guards as tempers seemed to flare after a game where they got tangled up in the second quarter. VanDeWeghe clearly indicated that Rondo did not acknowledge spitting on Paul. “Rajon has his own view of what happened,” VanDeWeghe said. “I think that we had a clear view that, however you want to interpret it, that there was a spitting in Chris Paul’s direction. I think I’m going to leave it at that.”

Ayton ‘learns a lot’ in loss to Jokic and the Nuggets By RENALDO DORSETT Tribune Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net THE learning curve of Deandre Ayton was apparent in his second NBA appearance against the Denver Nuggets. Nuggets centre Nikola Jokic got the better of Ayton for much of the night and produced one of the best statistical performances of his career in the Suns’ 119-91 loss to the Nuggets at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado, on Saturday. Jokic finished with 35 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists and was a perfect 11-11 from the field. “I learned a lot,” Ayton told Duane Rankin of the Arizona Republic following the game. “Didn’t get a chance to show my end of the bargain, but you live and you learn. It was a good learning lesson of how to really draw fouls on big men and live at the line. Jokic is a student of the game and he knows the game pretty well on how to get to the line,” Ayton added. Higgs was named the USBWA National Player of the Week and the Big 12 Conference Player of the Week after leading Texas to a pair of comeback wins against Oklahoma State

and Kansas State. During the two-game stretch, she averaged 28.0 points per game, shot 74.1 per cent from the field, connected on 80 per cent of her shots from beyond the arc and made 92.3 per cent [12of-13] of her free throws. Also, she led the steals with 2.5 per game and added 2.0 assists per game and 2.5 rebounds per game in an average of 30.5 minutes per game. Higgs scored a career-high 30 points and helped Texas overcome a six-point deficit with 3:43 remaining to defeat No. 20/23 Oklahoma State. In her sophomore season, Higgs - a Harbour Island native - averaged eight points, three rebounds, 1.5 assists and one steal in just over 17 minutes per game. She built upon the numbers from her freshman season when she averaged 7.2 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game in 13.2 minutes.

I don’t know if there is another Tum out there. He has been rock solid through a lot of things this year, and I love him for that,” Izzo said. “Tum’s not God, but he’s right there.” Nairn ended his Spartans career with averages of 1.7 points and 2.9 assists per game. After 65 career starts, his numbers in his senior season saw a decline with the emergence of sophomore point guard Cassius Winston. He was awarded the Stephen G Scofes Inspirational Player Award this past offseason for the third straight year when the Spartans hosted its annual Men’s Basketball Awards Banquet for the 2016-17 season.

Panthers rally with 21 fourthquarter points to down Eagles By The Associated Press PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Cam Newton tossed a 1-yard touchdown pass to Greg Olsen with 1:22 left and the Carolina Panthers overcame a 17-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat the Philadelphia Eagles 21-17 yesterday. Julius Peppers sacked Carson Wentz, forcing a fumble on fourth down from the Panthers 14, to seal the victory. The Panthers improved to 4-2 with the biggest comeback in franchise history. The defending Super Bowl champion Eagles fell to 3-4. After Carolina took the lead, the Eagles started at their 30. A 48-yard pass interference penalty on James Bradberry against Alshon Jeffery put the ball at the Carolina 22. Dodgers vs Red Sox: Rich histories, but little crossover By BEN WALKER AP Baseball Writer SANDY Koufax, Jackie Robinson and the Boys of Summer. Ted Williams to Yaz and the Impossible Dream. Manny Ramirez. Pedro Martinez. Bill Buckner. Fenway Franks and Dodger Dogs. Ebbets Field, the Green Monster. “Sweet Caroline” or “I Love L.A.” Yet for all their rich history — dating back to Babe Ruth on the mound — the Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers have rarely crossed paths heading into this World Series. Only once before in October, and that was more than a century ago. In fact, Clayton Kershaw has never even pitched at Fenway Park. Consider this: Going into Game 1 on Tuesday night, the Dodgers have beaten the Red Sox in Boston just one time. That came on June 12, 2004. And guess who scored and drove in a run for the Dodgers during that 14-5 romp? Alex Cora, now the rookie manager of the Red Sox. One of his teammates that afternoon — Dave Roberts, ready to lead Los Angeles into its second straight Fall Classic. “Two storied franchises, that draw more interest,” Red Sox second baseman Ian Kinsler said yesterday. Roberts is sure to draw a big cheer when the teams line up for pregame introductions. He’s still a fan favourite in Boston for his daring stolen base that sparked an unprecedented comeback from a 3-0 deficit against Mariano Rivera and the rival Yankees in the 2004 AL Championship Series. The Red Sox went on to end their 86-year title drought by sweeping St Louis in the World Series, boosted by Big Papi, Pedro and Manny. Starting this week, Boston will try for its fourth championship in 15 seasons. “I’m looking forward to going back to Fenway. Obviously for me

personally, I have a lot of fond memories of the Red Sox and Fenway Park,” Roberts said. “To be wearing another uniform going in there playing for a World Series championship is going to be special for me.” This also marks the first time both Series managers have played for each team. “The weather. Traffic,” Cora said yesterday about the varying locales. MVP candidate Mookie Betts and the Red Sox posted a team-record 108 wins, a big payoff for the team with the top payroll in the game. Boston pushed past New York in the AL Division Series and then quickly dispatched the defending champion Astros in the ALCS. A tremendous right fielder, Betts might move to second base when the Series shifts to Dodger Stadium. That would be to make room for slugger J.D. Martinez when the Red Sox lose their designated hitter slot. Boston opened as a slight betting favourite over Los Angeles. “That’s the best team in the game right now. We respect that,” Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen said. “But know that we’re good.” Chris Sale is set to pitch the opener for the Red Sox. He recently spent a night in the hospital because of a stomach illness, and no doubt watchful eyes will be on the lefty ace. Los Angeles is aiming for its first championship since Kirk Gibson, Orel Hershiser and Tommy Lasorda brought home the crown in 1988. A year after dropping Game 7 at home to Houston, Justin Turner and the crew with the third-highest payroll beat Colorado in a tiebreaker for the NL West title, chased Atlanta in the NLDS and topped Milwaukee 5-1 on Saturday night in Game 7 for the pennant. “It doesn’t matter how you get there. But to get to come back and go back from last year, it’s unbelievable,” Kershaw said. “Where we came from this

We’re excited.” New to the powerpacked Dodgers this season is star shortstop Manny Machado, acquired in a July trade with Baltimore. Boston fans are plenty familiar with him — his late slide last year injured longtime Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia, and led to a tense situation at Fenway with Sale throwing behind Machado. Soon as they see him, Red Sox rooters might even take up the familiar chant of “Beat LA!” It’s been heard for years in Boston, albeit in a different arena. That’s what Celtics fans echoed during the Larry Bird-Magic Johnson rivalry. Fitting, maybe, the former Lakers star is a part-owner of the Dodgers. On the basketball court, Los Angeles and Boston are certainly intertwined with championships on the line, going all the way back to the days of Bill Russell, Elgin Baylor, Bob Cousy and Jerry West. On the diamond, not so much for these formidable franchises. They first tangled for real in the 1916 World Series. The Babe pitched all 14

innings — in a tidy 2 hours, 32 minutes — as Boston beat Brooklyn 2-1 in Game 2. Though Fenway opened four years earlier, the game was played at Braves Field, home of the city’s NL franchise, because it held more people. The Red Sox wound up winning in five games. Back then, the Dodgers weren’t really the Dodgers. They were known by a collection of nicknames, and were often called the Robins because of popular manager Wilbert “Uncle Robbie” Robinson. And Ruth later coached for them. Over the years, the teams went their own ways, on and off the field. The Dodgers proudly broke baseball’s colour barrier when Jackie Robinson played in 1947. The Red Sox were the last team in the majors to have a black player, in 1959 with Pumpsie Green. Decades later, the teams made history together. They drew an announced crowd of 115,300 — the largest ever for a baseball game — for an exhibition at the Coliseum in 2008 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Dodgers’ move to Los Angeles. Overall, the Red Sox are 8-7 against the Dodgers

since interleague play began in 1997. Boston hasn’t hosted LA since 2010, and the teams haven’t squared off since 2016. Not much crossover for these clubs, either. Buckner was a young, fleet outfielder when he helped the Dodgers reach the 1974 World Series. He was a gimpy first baseman when he let that ball roll through his legs as Boston blew the 1986 Series. Pedro Martinez began his big league career as a reliever with Los Angeles before becoming a dominant starter for Boston. Manny Ramirez was an eccentric slugger for the Red Sox who took his act to Mannywood out West. Nomar Garciaparra, Adrian Beltre and Rickey Henderson are among the stars who spent time with both teams. So has Dodgers starter Rich Hill — in 2015, the Bostonarea native was pitching with the independent Long Island Ducks when he resurrected his career with the Red Sox. And there was that lateseason trade six years ago that sent Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Beckett and Carl Crawford from Boston to Los Angeles in a huge salary dump.

Raikkonen wins US Grand Prix as Hamilton F1 title bid denied By JIM VERTUNO AP Sports Writer AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Kimi Raikkonen’s second stint with Ferrari has been long on frustration and short on victories. That finally changed yesterday at the US Grand Prix where the Finnish driver earned his first win in five years, while a good enough day from Ferrari and a late block from Red Bull’s Max Verstappen denied Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton a fifth career Formula One championship. A former world champion with Ferrari, Raikkonen hadn’t won after his return to the team in 2014 while teammate Sebastian Vettel fought Hamilton for the championship the last two seasons. Raikkonen’s most previous win had been with Lotus at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix in 2013. He’d driven his Ferrari to three secondplace finishes this season before Sunday’s victory. Success finally came with a muscular performance by both driver and car on a day when Hamilton could have clinched the championship with a sixth US Grand Prix in seven years. Raikkonen seldom cracks a smile or shows much emotion, but he shouted an expletive on the team radio after the final lap. He was then his typical stoic self after a brief victory celebration at the podium. “It’s nice to win. It doesn’t change my life,”

Raikkonen said. “The biggest difference is how people look @ you.” For Hamilton, a rare defeat in Austin means his fight with Vettel for the championship continues to next weekend at the Mexican Grand Prix. Hamilton finished third and Vettel was fourth to stretch Hamilton’s championship lead 70 points with three races left. Hamilton is trying to match Argentina’s Juan Manuel Fangio, whose five championships in the 1950s rank second in F1 history. Only Germany’s Michael Schumacher has more with seven. Raikkonen won the season championship with Ferrari in 2008, a title that came down to the last race of the season. He rejoined Ferrari at a time the Italian team was lagging far behind Mercedes. Raikkonen will be leaving Ferrari to join Sauber after this season, moving from car capable of winning to a team that is rarely competitive. Raikkonen said he has no hard feelings toward Ferrari. “I’m very happy where I’m going. I won the championship with (Ferrari),” Raikkonen said. “As a driver I want different challenges.”
