THE GARBAGE CRUSADE

By Mike Lightbourn

Yes! It was really heartening to read about the “Be a Hero” campaign, the school-based initiative that aims to change our shocking culture of littering. Under the banner “Being a Hero, Keeping the Bahamas Clean, Green and Pristine,” the Minister of the Environment, Romauld Ferreira, says his ministry will focus on instilling pride in our surroundings. It’s about time! I agree we need to start with the young people because the adult population has allowed this terrible state of affairs to develop and young people are more receptive to change. Young people aren’t born with nasty habits. They learn from adults, so the schools are a good launching pad for Mr. Ferreira’s crusade against garbage. As Mr. Ferreira puts it, we want to go beyond cleaning up litter, waste and abandoned vehicles. We want to change the mindset. HOW IT WORKS Students from each school will be required to identify a project, such as raising funds for trash receptacles, creating a park, funding a vegetable garden or painting an abandoned building. The project will cover a six-month period with before and after pictures posted on social media. The students with the most impressive outcome and the largest social media following will win Hero designations and become part of a national advertising effort. They’ll get to meet dignitaries and advance the message that it’s cool to care about the environment. The campaign is backed by local civic minded sports, music and business heroes. FILTH BREEDS DISRESPECT Research confirms a link between dirty communities and

higher crime rates and aggressive behaviour. Filth breeds disrespect. Rats and rodents breed disease. Disrespect for property transfers into disrespect for the authorities, Mr. Ferreira explained. Traditional approaches to litter, such as periodic clean-up projects, help to remove garbage, but don’t prevent its recurrence. They’re a drain on our tax dollars. Community action and education organisations say changing attitudes and influencing behaviour are key to helping solve the problem. So, while the Ministry is targeting the schools, wider public education is important as well. Education can be tied to school curriculums, youth programmes, adult education, civic clubs and business and church groups and so on. REMOVE THE BILLBOARDS Tacky plywood billboards are another big problem. Like litter, they drag down property values and reflect poorly on neighbourhoods. Garbage, even if it’s in a public space just outside a neighbourhood, will cheapen the real estate within. UNSECURED LITTER A big problem is unsecured litter. Have you noticed that after a hard blow, the area surrounding busy public spaces are often strewn with Styrofoam containers and disposable cups? That’s because the litter hasn’t been secured and gets grabbed by the wind. Studies show people are more likely to litter if there’s already garbage on the ground and less likely to do so in a clean environment. BLAME AND SHAME Another ingredient to bring about change is to toughen and ENFORCE litter laws. The result would be two-fold – a cleaner island and more money in the Treasury. How about sentencing litterbugs to garbage collection un-

We can do better. QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS? Email me at: info@cbbahamas.com

CERASEE

Herbal Medicine or Placebo IF you are a Bahamian, from the time you were a child whenever you got a cold you were given a boiling hot cup of cerasee. Indeed it always tasted terrible but sure enough it seemed to reduce your symptoms and after a few more doses your good as new. I always fantasied as a child that all the germs ran out of my body as soon as I tasted the horrible cerasee just trying to save themselves much like I wished I could do from my grandmother who sat across the table from me and watched me drink it all before she would always tell me “now go lay down”. Though my hilarious view of the workings of Cerasee may be a little too sci-fi driven, is there really something in this Cerasee or is this just an old wives tale and what we are really experiencing is the action of a placebo driven by confidence in our generational belief? Well first, as much as we Bahamians feel that we own the exclusive papers on Cerasee it is actually native to African and was likely brought to our side of the world by African slaves as they were trafficked into South American. As the population disbursed likely so did this valued herbal medicine. Cerasee unlike many herbal medicines has a very broad recognition, virtually world wide. So much so that a number of varieties of this plant is even sold on “Amazon” as herbal medication and herbal tea. “It’s starting to seem that my grandparents were on to something.” So Scientifically why should Cerasee

help with ailments? Well Cerasee contains nutrients like calcium, iron, carotene, phosphorous, vitamins A and C and alkaloids, thus its effectiveness in protecting the body from and treating many ailments. Such as the common cold, influenza (flu), jaundice, stomach pains, fever and constipation. Additionally like most bitter herbs Cerasee helps to clean the blood and purge the body. When Bahamians generally use Cerasee for only medicinal purposes may other countries use these vines as a food source. In China Cerasee is used as a herb and a vegetable the yellow fruit with it’s red seeds, is known as “bitter Melon” and is eaten cooked or uncooked. The leaves and fruit are used to make soups and stews. A small bundle of the vines and some ginger are boiled to make a tea. A little sugar or honey can be added and it is still very effective. However it seems some people like it better without any sweetener, which is in fact the best way says “Healthy herbs and spices”. Cerasee leaves and vines can also be dried and made into a tea which is an effective treatment for parasitic worms

and liver problems. The leaves can be crushed and rubbed to get the juice extracted in a bath with water to treat rashes, dermatitis, sores and to give the skin a cleaner naturally refined look. The tea helps with menstrual cramps and treats urinary tract infections. The tea when drink by pregnant women is said to give their babies soft refined skin. So it seems that the world has spoken on Cerasee and apparently our grandparents were exactly right. Cerasee is no placebo, but is scientifically proven to offer may healthy benefits. So remember tell those guys cleaning your garden “don’t touch that Cerasee!”

Should you have a comment or question as regard this or any other landscaping issue please feel free to contact me Marcus Sweeting at marqleads@gmail.com or 525-0933 or visit and like our page on Facebook.
