NDER the theme “Building Community through Communion”, members of the Anglican Diocese of the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands came together this week for a pontifical eucharist to mark the opening of the 120th Session of the Synod. “The Anglican Diocese’s Synod is a special and pivotal event that brings together clergy and lay members from across our diocese to discuss, deliberate, and make important decisions that impact the future of our church. It’s a time of reflection, renewal, and unity as we come together to explore our shared mission and values,” said the Church in a statement. During the opening, Bishop Laish Boyd delivered his annual charge, honoring the achievements of Anglican education. He also reiterated support for the proposed amendments to the Sexual Offences Act, called for more attention to the growing effects of climate change, and highlighted the high cost of living. One church member noted: “A heavy charge Bishop Boyd is giving to the Diocese. In the name of the Father the Son

And the gates of hell shall not prevail against God’s church.” When it comes to Anglican education, Bishop Boyd said the Church is privileged to be involved with teaching the younger generations. “The Anglican education system is blessed to have immense talent
and expertise. When reflecting on our four schools in Exuma, Grand Bahama and New Providence, one cannot help but be awestruck by the overwhelming accomplishments. Our administrators and staff understand and have always understood our mandate and our role, impacting communities with influencers and changed agents. By NICOLE WINFIELD Associated Press A PROMINENT Irish nun said Monday that women’s voices are being heard at Pope Francis’ big meeting on the future of the Catholic Church, and said delegates are also acknowledging the hurt caused by the church’s position on homosexuality. Sister Patricia Murray, executive secretary of the main umbrella group of women’s religious orders, provided an update on the status of discussions halfway through the Vatican’s nearly month-long synod, or meeting. Francis called the gathering to press his vision for a church that is more inclusive and welcoming, where ordinary Catholics have a greater say in decision making than the all-male priestly hierarchy. A central theme has been the role of women in church governance, but other hot button issues are also on the agenda, including acceptance for LGBTQ+ Catholics and priestly celibacy. Murray is one of the 54 women granted the right to vote for the first time at a synod. She was also elected to the commission that will draft the synthesis document at the end of the meeting, another first for a woman. That document will provide the basis for reflection when a second session is convened next year. Murray, who heads the International Union of Superiors General, told a Vatican briefing that her election to the drafting commission was

By JACOB F LOVE Lecturer in Religious Studies, University of Tennessee (THE CONVERSATION) Since Saudi Arabia relaxed rules and expanded visas for tourists in 2019, Christians have been increasingly visiting the country, drawn by word of mouth and promotional YouTube videos, in search of Mount Sinai, where the Bible recounts God revealing the Ten Commandments to Moses. For many centuries people have believed the location to be in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, near the site of a monastery built around 550 CE and named after St Catherine. But this was entirely based on the word of local tribes living some 2,000 years after the event. Most scholars believe that the location of Mount Sinai is unknowable from the available textual evidence. As a scholar of the Hebrew Bible and language, I agree with them. The existence of Mount Sinai is likely a legendary myth that is part of the stories of many cultures. There is no corroborating evidence, archaeological or otherwise, to support any particular location. What’s in a name? The first biblical mention of the holy mountain occurs in Exodus, the second book of the Bible and the primary source for the story of Moses leading the Israelites out of Egypt. In Exodus 3:1, a mountain is referred to as Horeb and called the “mountain of God.” Horeb is mentioned twice more in Exodus but then disappears without mention in the third and fourth books – Leviticus and Numbers – until it reappears in the last book of the first section of the Bible, or the Pentateuch – Deuteronomy. Deuteronomy retells the history of Israel as the Israelites were poised to enter the Holy Land. Throughout
Deuteronomy, there are over a dozen references to Horeb as the place where Moses received the commandments. Horeb is also found in biblical books after the Pentateuch. For example, the prophet Malachi says in the book that bears his name, “Remember the statutes of Moses … whom I commanded at Horeb.” Horeb is a common name for the mountain in the Bible and yet is far less known than Sinai. The name Sinai is used throughout Exodus and occurs in Leviticus and Numbers, although Horeb is absent from those works. But in Deuteronomy, Sinai all but disappears – it is used just once in a poem quoted by the author of Deuteronomy (33:2). The poem is cast as Moses’ final benediction of the people and begins, “This is the blessing with which Moses the man of God blessed the children of Israel before his death. He said, ‘The Lord came from Sinai, and dawned from Se ir upon us; he shone forth from Mount Paran, he came from the ten thousands of holy ones, with flaming fire at his right hand.’” Horeb or Sinai? It is not simply a matter of two different names for the same place. That could be explained as easily as noting that Jerusalem is also called the City of David. And it would be logical if the various books scattered these names as if they were interchangeable. But I would argue that the distribution is anything but random. The references to Sinai are concentrated in Exodus, Leviticus and Numbers, while Deuteronomy refers almost exclusively to Horeb. In other words, the author or authors of Exodus, Leviticus and Numbers strongly preferred the word Sinai while the author of Deuteronomy used only Horeb. For over 200 years biblical scholars have been analysing the Pentateuch to discern its

The result of this search for the authors of the Pentateuch has led to the conclusions that the first four books were written by at least three authors and redacted by editors to combine their stories. There is evidence to show that the last book, Deuteronomy, was written by a single author. However, scholars argue, an editor probably changed and added material. It is likely that the one poem that mentions Sinai in Deuteronomy, when every other mention of that mountain is in Horeb, is a result of the editorial changes. A second possibility is that they are two different locations, each of which had sacred status to a particular group of Israelites. The third possibility, favored by most biblical scholars, is that the ancient stories cataloged among the Israelites came from different sources and were ultimately reconciled by editors. The second and third possibilities are not necessarily mutually exclusive – in other words, even if the stories were written by different authors, those different authors could have the same place in mind.
Perhaps the key fact to keep in mind is that scholars know very little about the location of Mount Sinai and whether or not it is the same place as Horeb. A strange absence Many of the books recounting the early history of biblical times, especially the prophets, however, have practically no reference to Sinai or Horeb. Among the 150 Psalms there is but one reference to Sinai. How can it be that such a critical source of the religion of Israel was of little interest to these prophets? The commandments that Moses is believed to have received from God framed the lives of all Israelites and established the priestly offerings, the courts, and the rules for marriage, divorce and inheritance. Yet, none of the prophets felt a need to call upon Israel to follow the laws of Moses given at Sinai or Horeb. Is it not more reasonable to imagine that they simply knew little of those events or did not attach much importance to them? Some people might conclude that the belief about Moses at Sinai is just invention. After all, there is so much historical and archaeological evidence for the
history of places such as Jerusalem and Lachish. But in the case of Horeb or Sinai, the geographical hints found in the Bible are insufficient to make any sort of determination. In other words, there isn’t sufficient data to decide whether the biblical account of Sinai or Horeb happened somewhere, or whether it is perhaps a foundation legend created for some purpose such as uniting the disparate Hebrew-speaking tribes of Israel. When some Christians, such as the ones now looking for Sinai in Saudi Arabia, examine these sources, they often try to stitch together texts written over centuries after the events supposedly happened. It is not surprising that various people have assigned the location of Sinai to locations hundreds of miles apart. Based on all the evidence – or lack thereof – I argue that Sinai is located not in any specific place but rather in the hearts and minds of those who treasure the meaning of the Hebrew Bible. How ‘nones’ − the religiously unaffiliated − are finding meaning, purpose and spirituality in psychedelic churches By MORGAN SHIPLEY Michigan State University (THE CONVERSATION) More and more surveys point to decreasing membership in religious institutions and a corresponding rise of “nones.” Many people might assume that this indicates the absence of belief or a lack of spirituality. Particularly in the West, people tend to think about religion in terms of belief in a higher power, such as God. For many nones, however, spirituality does not need a god or the supernatural to address questions of purpose, meaning, belonging and well-being. While abandoning mainstream religious affiliation, many turn to alternative expressions, including secular, atheist and psychedelic churches. For about a decade, as a scholar who studies alternative expressions of spirituality, I have tracked these groups online, visited churches and interacted with attendees. At times, I have been able to attend services or simply visit locations. At other times, out of respect for participants, I have met members – but not during services and rituals. These churches demonstrate not a rejection of religion, as surveys suggest, but continued interest in spiritual community, rituals and virtues. Psychedelic churches One such church is The Divine Assembly, or TDA, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Founded in 2020 as “a magic mushroom church” by Steve
Urquhart, a former member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints, TDA conducts worship that connects people without dogma or intermediaries. TDA is not atheistic but maintains an inclusive notion of belief regarding God or a higher power. Where members depart from traditional notions of religion and church, however, is within their practices and aims. Through psychedelic drugs, members believe they can directly experience the divine – as they define it – while gaining insight into their own and others’ well-being. Within the church, members participate in collective meaning-making rituals that fortify their everyday lives. Distinctly, using psilocybin is not part of these activities, nor are instructions provided on conducting mushroom ceremonies. This is done on one’s own time, according to individual practices. Through the church, members participate in practices to help cultivate the value of psychedelic exploration. These include a range of activities, from ice baths to meditation in a room with flashing lights. TDA also offers courses on growing psilocybin through its educational initiative “shroomiversity.” To borrow from its stated mission, TDA works to connect “people to self, others and the Divine.” It also seeks to “protect responsible and religious use of psilocybin, and cultivate health and healing.” This mission does not deny the place of belief but highlights
broader therapeutic concerns. Through shared rituals, members cultivate community while enhancing their total well-being. Mushroom churches: an American tradition Louisville, Kentucky’s Psanctuary Church brings “people together for healing and connection to divine revelation through communion with sacred mushrooms.” Nondenominational, Psanctuary defines itself as a “Constitutional Church.” Indicating their legal status as a a nonprofit, tax-exempt, faith-based organization, Psanctuary situates itself as a uniquelyAmerican religion. For Psanctuary and other psychedelic churches, the use of psychedelics is simultaneously a sacred right and an expression of political freedom. As with many psychedelic churches, Psanctuary is not atheistic. It understands divinity as “pure consciousness” that “permeates all being.” Positioned this way, religion moves away from monotheistic understandings of God. Instead, it follows nonWestern, indigenous and New Age understandings that view divinity as within everyone. It also reorients people from seeking salvation in a world to come by encouraging focus on the present. Like TDA, religion for Psanctuary expresses the pursuit of “pure consciousness” as “the origin of health and wellbeing.” By experiencing this origin through psychedelics, members are

Photo:Jessie Wardarski/AP “empowered to discover our own divinity.” This dual emphasis on self-divinity and healing reflects common themes across psychedelic churches. The Church of Ambrosia and Zide Door Inspired by The Church of Ambrosia, a nondenominational, interfaith religion, , supports “the safe access and use of Entheogenic Plants.” Founded in 2019 by Dave Hodges, Zide Door affords space for members to “explore their spirituality.” Commonly, mainstream religion requires believers to interact with the sacred through designated leaders or texts. At Zide Door and other psychedelic churches, the emphasis is on self-realisation and interconnection through direct experience. Psychedelics offer members firsthand access to religious understanding. Church, accordingly, becomes a place to support individual awakening. Sacred Garden Community captures this shift. Also located in Oakland,
SGC – as it announces on its website – is a “postmodern church” based on “faith of least dogma.” Through psychedelic sacraments, SGC claims to facilitate “direct experience of and relationship to Divine presence for individuals and community.” Beyond the experience, SGC helps members integrate “the benefits” the “experience and relationship can bring” into everyday life. Like other psychedelic churches, SGC highlights how rejection of conventional religion is often accompanied by new avenues to pursue spirituality. Ayahuasca churches and healing Ayahuasca churches rely on indigenous understandings of ayahuasca, a plant-based psychedelic brew. For Indigenous people of South America, ayahuasca is a sacred rite based on local knowledge. They argue that removing ayahuasca from that context takes away its power and impact. Indigenous practitioners and scholars thus warn about both
the appropriation and commodification of indigenous practices. While such concerns should not be ignored, ayahuasca churches tell us much about contemporary religion. The turn to ayahuasca rituals highlights the growing connection between spiritual needs and healing. The emergence of ayahuasca churches in the U.S. suggests that such healing requires the support of community. California-based Hummingbird Church, for example, draws from ayahuasca rituals to provide “participants with opportunities to recharge their body, mind and soul with positive energy and reconnect with themselves.” Its “Statement of Faith” emphasizes this commitment to holistic healing. It also situates the divine in “earthly” terms. Members, they believe, “should seek within Nature that which is contributory to our health and well-being.” Located in Orlando, Florida, members of Soul Quest Ayahuasca Church of Mother Earth believe likewise. By LISA H SIDERIS University of California, Santa Barbara (THE CONVERSATION) Eight years have elapsed since Pope Francis released “Laudato Si,” his encyclical urging “care for our common home.” Though hailed as an eloquent plea to protect the environment, climate change was just one part of the pope’s message, from encouraging solidarity with the poor to criticising “blind confidence” in technology. On October 4, 2023, Francis released an addendum to “Laudato Si,” addressed to “all people of good will on the climate crisis.” October 4 marked the feast day of the pope’s namesake, St Francis of Assisi, who famously loved all of creation. The new installment, “Laudate Deum” – “Praise God” – is no less sweeping in the way it links environmental problems with economic, social and technological issues. Like “Laudato Si,” the new document strongly reproaches wealthy nations that contribute the most to climate change, accusing them of ignoring the plight of the poor. It offers a similar rebuke of rampant individualism, lamenting that responses to global crises of climate change and the pandemic have led to “greater individualism” and hoarding of wealth, rather than increased solidarity. Scarcely any facet of modern life emerges unscathed by Francis’ sometimes withering critiques. In his view, societies have failed to respond to crises that are profoundly interrelated: global inequality, pollution and even new forms of artificial intelligence that feed the illusion of humans’ unlimited power. His 2015 broadside, in fact, targeted today’s “technocratic paradigm” with such vehemence that one critic likened these passages to the rantings of an “Amish hippie.”
At the root of Earth’s interlocking crises, the pope argued in 2015 and again in 2023, is a denial of the fact that all life exists in relationships. The larger whole in which all beings are embedded is, for Francis, both an inescapable reality and a source of wonder. An integrated vision I am an environmental ethicist, and my work explores both science and religion. And while these fields often look at the natural world through very different lenses, they also share a common value: wonder. Francis’ social critique, I believe, stems from his vision of life – one filled with awe for the depth of meaning and mystery to be found in an interconnected world. Conversely, the list of social and environmental ills Francis addresses in his environmental documents all involve a tendency to fracture and obscure the bigger picture – to ignore the larger context of each particular issue. He criticises “excessive anthropocentrism,” for example: overlooking humans’ bonds with the rest of creation. Within society, excessive individualism similarly prioritises “parts” at the expense of the whole community.
Cheap consumer goods mask the full cost of production, such as the environmental and health costs of manufacturing, obscuring the relationship between customers’ habits and their harmful consequences. The impacts of air travel, for example – air and noise pollution, land use, carbon emissions – are not factored into the ticket price. Failure to see these connections contributes to what Francis assails as an unsustainable “throwaway culture.” Meanwhile, ubiquitous technology – with an app for everything at each person’s fingertips – encourages a techno-fix mentality. Francis’ environmental writings reprove tech solutions that target the symptoms of problems without addressing their deeper causes. Geoengineering may offer hope to mitigate the effects of climate change, but not if societies keep burning fossil fuels in the meantime. Social media supposedly helps build connections, but researchers have found that people who go on the apps to maintain relationships feel more lonely than other users. In an August 2023 speech, Francis warned of social media’s “reduction of human relationships to mere algorithms.”
Integral ecology In Francis’ eyes, all these problems result from denial of how deeply interconnected the world is. When humans attempt to declare “independence from reality,” he writes, relationships are the first casualty. The word “reality” appears over 40 times in the pope’s 2015 encyclical, by my count. In his 2023 addendum, Francis once more features the word prominently. He argues that nonhuman creatures have their own “reality” and that climate change is a complex “global reality” that many try to deny, or simplify by blaming others – notably developing societies – rather than recognise their own role. To understand what he means by “reality,” I look to the idea of “integral ecology,” a term popularized by Francis’ 2015 encyclical. In short, integral ecology is a holistic way of thinking about economic, social, political, ethical and environmental problems. The Earth is not confronting a variety of separate crises, Francis insists, but rather “one complex crisis” with many faces. His new document reinforces this idea, stressing that climate concerns are about more than ecology, because care for the Earth and care for one another are intimately linked. Mystery in a dewdrop The pope often turns to Saint Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals, as a model of integral thought. The 13th century saint understood the “inseparable bond” that exists “between concern for nature, justice for the poor, commitment to society, and interior peace,” the pope wrote in 2015. St. Francis spoke of all of creation as family, praising “Mother Earth,” “Brother Moon” and “Sister Sun.” In 2015, the pope wrote admiringly about his namesake’s
sense of awe, adding that without wonder, humans’ attitude is that of “masters, consumers, ruthless exploiters.” Indeed, wonder can create a shift in how people understand themselves in relation to something larger. There has recently been a renaissance of interest across many fields of study in the power of wonder to encourage behaviors that are good for the environment and for human health and relationships. Psychologists have found that experiences of wonder can shrink the ego, encouraging generosity, humility and ethical decision-making. Wonder also weakens the perception of boundaries, increasing a person’s sense of connection with something larger than the self. Other studies suggest that experiences of awe have the power to broaden people’s moral concerns, increasing their consideration toward other humans, plants, animals and the environment. For the pope, however, integral reality is about more than humans and nature; it encompasses relationships between all living things and God – an even larger, mysterious reality that is divine. “The universe unfolds in God, who fills it completely,” he writes in both documents. Therefore, “There is a mystical meaning to be found in a leaf, in a mountain trail, in a dewdrop, in a poor person’s face.” All are knit together in wondrous patterns of interconnection.
