fter making all of the necessary adjustments to the banned Tanqueray boat, the Rev Dr Philip McPhee still doesn’t understand why his PM Thunderbird is not being allowed to sail. Dr McPhee, who has remodelled the boat, which was banned more than 30 years ago because it was deemed illegal, said he’s hoping that he can set sail in the Sir Durward Knowles 100 Regatta next weekend in Montagu Bay. “In December, I brought the boat and after we rebuilt it, we asked the various boat owners to come and look at it,” he said.

“Sheldon Gibson, Kevin Moxey, Tommy Thompson and others came to look at it. “They all came by and advised me that I had to take the fin kell off and run a straight kell. Vivian Lockhart, who built the original boat, came by and we went over everything that needed to be changed.” Dr McPhee said he again invited the boat owners to come back and view the A class boat and they all felt that it was now in line with all of the boats currently sailing, including the Whitty K, Ruff Justice, Tida Wave and Good News. However, McPhee said after they sent out an invitation to the National Family Island Regatta Committee, none of the principals took up the offer, but they have

made it clear that the boat is still not worthy to sail in their regatta. “Since we haven’t had a chance to sail yet, I want to do it for Sir Durward Knowles. He has been like a father to me and to the McPhee family, having been a great friend of his father, the late Rev Dr WG McPhee,” Dr McPhee said. “We have learnt that the Sir Durward Knowles Regatta is not a prize-giving regatta so we decided that we will sail so that we can prove that the boat is legitimate and should be allowed to sail in any regatta.” But Dr McPhee said that he was advised that a group of sailing executives, including Danny Strachan, Clyde Rolle, Stafford Armbrister and James Wallace

said that they will not allow the boat to sail. “Sir Durward has been a man in the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture when I was there under the Minister Algernon Allen to work on regattas,” he said. “At that time, there was only three regattas going and so we formed the Regatta Desk and was provided with a budget for regattas. We then formed a steering committee that eventually became the National Sailing Association and I recommended Sir Durward Knowles as our first chairman.” During his time in office, Sir Durward coined the ‘One Bahamas’ committee that brought all Bahamians under one umbrella

NPSA: LADY TRUCKERS, HITMEN TAKE 2-0 LEAD IN SERIES THE defending champions Johnson’s Lady Truckers and the C&S Hitmen have both taken a 2-0 lead in their respective New Providence Softball Association best-of-seven championship series. On Monday night in the Banker’s Field at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex, the Lady Truckers rolled past the Sunshine Auto Lady Wildcats 17-9 as Marvell Miller got the win over Mary ‘Cruise’ Sweeting. And the Hitmen routed the BTC Warriors 11-4 in their men’s series as Alcott Forbes secured the win on the mound over Thomas Davis. Game three in both series was scheduled for last night. Game four is set for tonight and, if necessary, game five will be played on Thursday night. The two winners will not only win the Godfrey ‘Gully’ Burnside titles, which are being held in honour of the immediate past president, but they will also represent the NPSA in the Bahamas Softball Federation’s National Round Robin Tournament at the Baillou Hills complex next weekend.

Hayward breaks ankle, Cavs top Celtics 102-99 in opener By TOM WITHERS Associated Press CLEVELAND (AP) — Boston’s Gordon Hayward broke his left ankle just five minutes into the season, a grisly injury that overshadowed Kyrie Irving’s return to Cleveland and the Cavaliers’ 102-99 win over the shocked Celtics last night. LeBron James scored 29 points — 13 in the fourth quarter — in his most extensive action in three weeks because of a sprained left ankle. He also fed Kevin Love for a critical 3-pointer with 46.3 second left to put the Cavs up 102-98.

Irving, who asked to be traded this summer after six seasons in Cleveland, had a chance to tie it with a 3-pointer at the horn but missed. Irving then shared a warm embrace with James, his teammate for three seasons. Irving finished with 22 points for the Celtics, who overcame an 18-point deficit in the third and led with 2:04 left. Boston’s guard was also called for a technical. Hayward, who signed a fouryear, $128 million free agent contract with the Celtics this summer, was bumped by James while trying to catch an alley-oop pass with 6:45 left in the first quarter. The forward’s leg got twisted underneath him as he came back to the floor and snapped his ankle grotesquely. The 27-year-old sat up, looked at his foot and yelled in horror while some players covered their mouths and others turned their heads. Hayward’s stunning injury changed the tenor of the highly anticipated season opener between two of the league’s best teams, and will likely alter the direction of Boston’s season. Hayward will require surgery and need months to recover. The Celtics were understandably shaken at halftime, and went to the locker room down 16. However, they battled back and were still leading 98-97 when

AFRICA EMERGES AS FINALIST IN ITF JUNIOR TOURNEY

THE Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association congratulated Afrika Smith, who pulled off an amazing performance this week and emerged as a finalist in the ITF Junior Tournament in Curacao.   Smith entered the tournament ranked No. 6 and advanced to the final by defeating three players from the United States in Aleksandra, Caricic 6-2,6-3, No.3 seed Kitty Greenwalt 7-5, 6-1 and Casey Cummings 7-5, 6-2.  Smith, however, fell to top seed Jennifer Kida 6-2, 6-1.  “Afrika is a fine young athlete committed to hard work and discipline,” the BLTA said in a press release. “She has represented the Bahamas on several national teams including the 12u Team Championship, JITIC and Jr Fed Cup.”  Smith currently attends the Bahamas Global Academy and is actively playing on the ITF Junior circuit.   “We are proud of Afrika that her hard work has paid off,” the BLTA further stated.   Also to be commended is Sierra Donaldson, who advanced to the quarter-final.  “We wish Afrika and Sierra all the best on their tennis journey,” the BLTA said.

Now with the regatta set to honour Sir Durward on his 100th birthday that will fall on November 2, Dr McPhee said he feels it would be an appropriate time for the PM Thunderbird to set sail. “I couldn’t understand why they don’t want the boat to sail because it meets all of the requirements as a boat that was built by a Bahamian, owned by a Bahamian and sailed by Bahamians. “Those were the criteria for any boat to sail in the Bahamas. There were all kinds of rumours that the boat was built in the United States and transported into Nassau and put together on Shirley Street. That is foolishness.” Dr McPhee revealed that the original boat was

built in 1997. But it has not sailed since it competed in the National Family Island Regatta in Georgetown, Exuma. “We have transformed, refurbished and made the boat what it ought to be,” he stressed. “We have at least 8-9 A class boat owners who say they have no problem sailing against the boat because it makes the requirement. “Danny Strachan, Clyde Rolle, Stafford Armbrister and James Wallace all have a problem with a Bahamian boat sailing. This boat has attracted people from all over the world waiting to see it sail.” Dr McPhee said he has advised the Ministry of Agriculture with responsibility for regattas of what has happened and he said he has also informed Sir Durward and they are hoping that the boat will get a chance to sail during the regatta next weekend.

Cougars earn 7-2 win over Comets By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net WITH the defending champions St Augustine’s College Big Red Machine rolling away with the junior boys’ division, the battle for the Bahamas Association of Independent Secondary Schools’ playoffs intensified with the second and third place teams hooking up. With both teams losing their only game to the Big Red Machine, the Charles W Saunders Cougars avoided dropping another one as they pulled off a 7-2 win over the Queen’s College Comets. With the win yesterday at Queen’s College, the Cougars improved their win-loss record to 3-1, while the Comets dropped to 3-2. “Our boys played well. We had a couple of hiccups here and there, but overall our boys played well,” said Charles W Saunders’ coach Brad Wood Jr. “I think our weakest point right now is the outfield. They know how to catch the ball, but they need to work on tracking it. That is what we need to work on.” Having finished third in the league last year, Wood Jr said their projection is to go all the way this year and that is to dethrone the Big Red Machine, whom they felt got away with a two-run victory after they made on a few errors. Queen’s College, on the other hand, was simply beaten, said coach Adam Waterhouse. “The opponents were strong and unfortunately we made too many errors on the field,” Waterhouae said. “We have two more games this week against Jordan Prince Wiliams on Thursday and a make-up against Nassau Christian Academy on Friday before we play our final game next week. “We will make the playoffs. Once we do, we have to cut down on our errors and re-arrange our attack.

We took too many balls today. We can’t do that if we are going to be successful.” Nathan Darling gave up three hits and struck out four for the win on the mound for Charles W Saunders. In a losing effort for Queen’s College, Kevon Marshall surrendered eight hits with three strike outs. After their first batter struck out in the top of the first inning, the Cougars roared to put three runs on the scoreboard on a tworun in-the-park home run from Pheron Moss, driving in Rashad Knowles, while Davante Brown had a runproducing double to score Preston Cartwright. However, Marshall settled down and struck out two of the final three Cougars’ batters he faced to end the rally. The Comets responded in the bottom of the frame after their first batter also struck out to get their first run as Ajai Hart drilled a shot to right field for a triple and he came home on a throwing error on the same play. In the second inning, Charles W Saunders put the game pout of reach as they added three more runs, thanks to Cartwright’s tworun triple to plate Bryieas Dean and Knowles before he came home on an error. It wasn’t until the fourth when the Cougars scored again with one out when Knowles walked, stole second, got to third on an error and came home on another. And in the bottom of the frame, Alantonio Knowles got the second and final run for the Comets after he single, moved up to third on two consecutive walks and caught a ride home on Garomme Hanna’s RBI fielder’s choice. Both teams came up with a big defensive play in the fifth, but it was Charles W Saunders who had the most effective, preventing Queen’s College from scoring at the plate with the second out and the third on the game ending play at third.

STAR TRACKERS ATHLETES SHOW APPRECIATION TO SPONSOR THREE athletes showed their appreciation recently to Karen and JR McDonald after they paid a courtesy call to the major sponsor of their Star Trackers Track Club. During their visit, Devynne Charlton presented the McDonalds with a ‘Team Devynne’ t-shirt, Andriel Strachan presented McDonald with a Campbell University cap and Tavonte Mott presented an Ohio State cap to McDonald. Charlton is in her senior year at Purdue University, Strachan graduated from Campbell University in August and is presently at the University of the West Indies in Trinidad &

Tobago and Mott will enrol at Ohio State in January. The cap presentation to McDonald started with Karlton Rolle when he signed with UCLA in 2008. Ever since, every year, members of the Star Trackers make a courtesy call to make the presentation to McDonald, who continue to support the student athletes in their collegiate experiences. Additionally, McDonald continues to support the club in sponsoring their annual Star Performers Track and Field Classic. The 15th annual event is scheduled for February 3, 2018 at Thomas A Robinson Track and Field Stadium.

NFL PLAYERS, OWNERS HOLD ‘CONSTRUCTIVE’ TALKS ON ISSUES By BARRY WILNER Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — NFL players and owners met yesterday to discuss social issues, a session Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross called “constructive” and Colts defensive back Darius Butler termed “positive.” A group of 11 owners and more than a dozen players met at the league’s headquarters. Among the topics discussed was enhancing the players’ platforms for speaking out on social issues. “We heard what they had to say and they heard us,” Ross said. “It’s open talks and that’s a good thing.” Ross said the NFL’s policy on the national anthem “did not come up.”

That policy states that the players “should” stand for the anthem, and some have suggested the league would seek to change that to “must” stand. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a memo to the teams last week that the NFL prefers for players to stand during “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Butler, who played Monday night in Nashville before attending the meeting hours later, said both sides are headed in the right direction. He said the players delivered “our perspective. Obviously it’s a different perspective. I think that’s the most important thing when it comes to these issues is perspective and respecting everyone’s rights regardless of how they feel.”

Woodyard’s stop helps Titans end 11-game skid against Colts By TERESA M WALKER Associated Press NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Wesley Woodyard squatted and folded his arms as his Tennessee teammates bowed in front of the veteran linebacker near midfield in celebration, deserving every bit of the attention. Woodyard had just forced Colts quarterback Jacoby Brissett out of bounds shy of the first down marker on fourth-and-inches, sealing the Titans’ 36-22 win Monday night over Indianapolis. It ended the Titans’ 11-game skid to their AFC South rivals — the one tied for the longest active drought against one team in the NFL. Cleveland now has lone possession of that mark against Denver. “We feel like every game’s a must-win, but this was definitely a must-win, especially with the 11-game streak on the line,” said Woodyard, who also had a teamhigh eight tackles and recovered a fumble. “We came in and answered the call.” The Titans (3-3) next head to winless Cleveland for a chance to move above .500 before their bye. Still waiting for Andrew Luck, the Colts (2-4) have yet to beat a team with a win this season. Indianapolis has been outscored 85-22 in fourth quarters, and coach Chuck Pagano had to answer for another head-scratching finish this week. His Colts led 19-15 going into the fourth only to be outscored 21-3. “We have to figure it out,” Pagano said.

• Here are some things to know about the Colts and Titans: MARCUS MARIOTA Mariota played with a strained left hamstring that kept him out of last week’s loss in Miami, and the Titans quarterback was careful about it. The Colts sacked him once and hit him six times, but Mariota shuffled around the pocket to throw for a season-high 306 yards. His 53-yard touchdown with 5:29 left to a wide-open Taywan Taylor put the Titans ahead to stay. “He’s a tough guy,” Titans running back Derrick Henry said. “To come out there at not even 100 percent, to come out here and play and lead us to a win against a good division opponent. All credit goes to him. That shows what type of leader he is, what type of guy he is and how great he is. SMASH MOUTH The Titans ran for 168 yards with Henry turning in his best game yet in the NFL. He ran 19 times for 131 yards and provided the final margin by running 72 yards for a TD inside the final minute. “My goal was to get a first down,” Henry said. “We knew they were out of timeouts, so if we get the first down, that ends the game. SUSPENDED ELLIOTT’S ATTORNEYS CITE TIGHT NFL ROSTER DEADLINE By SCHUYLER DIXON Associated Press ATTORNEYS for Dallas Cowboys star Ezekiel Elliott requested an emergency hearing in federal court in New York yesterday on the belief that the running back’s six-game suspension over domestic violence allegations would be in place for at least a week without further legal intervention. Elliott’s legal team and NFL lawyers were set for an afternoon hearing in the Southern District of New York, about two hours before what Elliott’s attorneys believed was a deadline for active rosters to be set for the Cowboys’ game Sunday at San Francisco. US District Judge Paul Crotty was set to hear arguments because the presiding judge, Katherine Polk Fialla, was out of town. In their request for a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction, Elliott’s attorneys said NFL procedure required rosters to be set by 4pm Eastern time Tuesday. NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said there is no such deadline from the league’s perspective. NFL Players Association attorneys, working on Elliott’s behalf, also said

the league had already informed Elliott that he couldn’t practice or play this week. The Cowboys returned to work yesterday after their bye week and will have their first full practice today. Elliott was suspended in August by Commissioner Roger Goodell after the league concluded following a yearlong investigation that he had several physical confrontations in the summer of 2016 with Tiffany Thompson, his girlfriend at the time. Prosecutors in Columbus, Ohio, decided not to pursue the case in the city where Elliott starred for Ohio State, citing conflicting evidence, but the NFL did its own investigation and announced the sixgame punishment. That has led to weeks of court filings, with NFLPA lawyers contending that league investigators withheld key evidence from Commissioner Roger Goodell and that the hearing was unfair because arbitrator Harold Henderson refused to call Goodell and Thompson as witnesses. The NFL placed Elliott on the suspended list Friday, a day after a federal appeals court overturned a Texas court’s injunction that had allowed him to play this season.

TOTTENHAM HOLDS REAL MADRID TO 1-1 DRAW By TALES AZZONI Associated Press

MADRID (AP) — Tottenham held Real Madrid to 1-1 in the Champions League yesterday, a result that kept both clubs at the top of Group H. Tottenham scored first with an own-goal by Raphael Varane as the Madrid defender tried to clear a cross intended for Harry Kane, and Cristiano Ronaldo equalised for Madrid by converting a penalty kick just before halftime after Toni Kroos was fouled. Tottenham was a tough challenge against the defending champions and could have left Madrid with the victory but Kane’s closerange shot was saved by goalkeeper Keylor Navas midway through the second half in one of the game’s best scoring opportunities. The unbeaten sides meet again in England in two weeks. They remain tied

for the group lead with seven points and the same number of goals scored and conceded. In the other Group H match, APOEL held Borussia Dortmund to a 1-1 draw (see sidebar) at home, leaving both teams with one point each. Tottenham arrived looking for a good performance to show it can compete against the best in Europe. And it was a back-and-forth match at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, with both teams creating several scoring chances. All eyes were on prolific forwards Ronaldo and Kane, who arrived as the tournament’s top scorers after two group-stage matches. Kane had five goals and Ronaldo equaled him with his goal on Tuesday. Tottenham opened the scoring in the 28th minute after Varane found his own net while trying to

clear Serge Aurier’s cross directed to Kane, who was not able to get his foot to the ball. Ronaldo’s goal came after Kroos was brought down by Aurier inside the area. The Portugal forward sent a firm shot into the corner as Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris went the other way. Kane had already enjoyed a great chance with a first-half header that was stopped by Navas, and then squandered what could have been the game-winner in the 71st after entering the area free from defenders but failing to get the ball past the Madrid goalkeeper. Lloris also made a brilliant save with his foot after a close-range header by Karim Benzema in the second half.

DORTMUND’S CHAMPIONS LEAGUE HOPES DENTED NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) — Borussia Dortmund’s hopes of making the second round of the Champions League took a major blow when it was held to 1-1 at APOEL Nicosia yesterday. After losing its opening games in Group H to Tottenham and Real Madrid, Dortmund needed a win to kick-start its campaign in Europe’s premier club competition. Dortmund, which reached the final in 2013, started well against a side that hadn’t scored in its previous six games, but then stagnated as APOEL organised. Despite suffering a double-blow in the first half when striker Igor De Camargo and goalkeeper Boy Waterman both went off with injuries, APOEL managed to restrict the visitors’ space and opportunities. Dortmund’s lacklustre performance continued after the break and the noisy stadium erupted in joy when Mickael Pote ended APOEL’s barren run in front of goal - thanks to a mistake from goalkeeper Roman Buerki. CP3’s free agency decision becomes a documentary By BRIAN MAHONEY Associated Press CHRIS Paul had a new home in Los Angeles and the potential for a $200 million contract if he stayed with the Clippers. He also had reason to doubt a championship would ever come there. So sometime between walking off the floor after a Game 7 loss with the Clippers last spring and walking back onto it last night in a Houston Rockets uniform at Golden State, Paul decided he needed to pack up his family and try for a title elsewhere. “I just felt that it was time,” Paul said. His free agency process and decision is the subject of a three-part documentary series titled “Chris Paul’s Chapter 3” that debuts Thursday on ESPN. The first episode shows Paul’s frustration following the Clippers’ ouster against Utah in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs and his questioning the Clippers’ culture. He had helped them become a perennial playoff team since his arrival in 2011, but not one that ever seriously contended for a title, “Somewhere, I don’t know when it was — I’m not a saint by any means, it could have a lot do to with me also — but we just weren’t having as much fun,” he said. He talked with his family and business partners about possibilities with Boston and San Antonio — where he feared Gregg Popovich might only coach for a couple more years — and visited music mogul Jay-Z and Disney CEO Bob Iger for their advice. He began to view Houston as the best option and eventually accepted a trade in late June, agreeing to opt in for the final year of his contract and delaying free agency until next summer. All that after he had bought a house in Los Angeles across the street from Clippers teammate Paul Pierce, moving his in-laws in last January. “Truthfully, I didn’t think there was no way that Chris would leave the Clippers,” said Pierce, now retired and an ESPN analyst. “He really built up something special, you know, with getting the Clippers back to being legitimate, make the playoffs every year, (winning) 55 games. He just bought a new home like less than a year ago. He had a $200 million offer on the table. So that really shocked me that he would leave.”

disclosed by the team. ESPN first reported the deal, which it said is worth $2.3 million. The Nuggets open the season today in Utah. Jefferson was recently waived by Atlanta after being dealt to the Hawks from Cleveland. He became a free agent on Monday, with Denver quickly jumping to the top of the list. The 37-year-old Jefferson spent two seasons with the Cavaliers and played a big role off the bench during the team’s

2016 championship season. He appeared in 79 games last season, averaging 5.7 points in 20.4 minutes. Jefferson also has played for the Nets, San Antonio Spurs, Milwaukee Bucks, Jazz, Golden State Warriors and Dallas Mavericks over his 16-year career. In Denver, he figures to back up Wilson Chandler at small forward and provide leadership on a Nuggets squad that many predict to be in the playoff race after narrowly missing a spot a

Judge HR sparks NY, Yanks beat Astros 6-4 to even ALCS at 2 By JAKE SEINER Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — With a soaring shot headed for Yankee Stadium’s Monument Park, Aaron Judge got New York back on track for another memorable October. Judge ignited a rousing rally with a home run, then doubled during a fourrun eighth inning to spur the unflappable New York Yankees over the Houston Astros 6-4 last night and tie the AL Championship Series 2-2. The Baby Bombers trailed 4-0 against starter Lance McCullers Jr until Judge homered leading off the seventh. He tied it with a line drive that nearly left the park in the eighth and scored when Gary Sanchez hit a go-ahead two-run double off loser Ken Giles. The Yankees overcame three errors and have roared back from a second straight 0-2 series deficit — they beat Cleveland in the Division Series by winning three in a row to take that best-of-five matchup. Aroldis Chapman struck out two in a perfect ninth to cap a three-hitter. New York improved to 5-0 at home in the playoffs and won for the 18th time in their last 21 home games. Yankee Stadium will be rocking again when Masahiro Tanaka pitches for New York against Dallas Keuchel in Game 5 today. It’s a rematch of the series opener, when Keuchel outdid the Japanese righthander in a 2-1 Astros win. An AL MVP candidate marred in a sluggish October, Judge sparked the Yankees by chasing McCullers, who baffled the Yankees with his power breaking ball.

Except for the last one. Judge launched a curveball into the netting above centre field’s Monument Park for New York’s second hit. “Once we’re within striking distance like that, anything can happen,” Judge said. Houston manager A.J. Hinch pulled McCullers after 81 pitches, Didi Gregorius tripled off Chris Devenski and Sanchez brought Gregorius in with a sacrifice fly. “I thought Aaron’s home run just lit a little spark,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. Todd Frazier led off the eighth with a double to left, and pinch hitter Chase Headley then did the same — only after falling between first and second base, taking one step back, then heading for second and sliding in ahead of Jose Altuve’s tag. “Panic,” Headley recalled. “I went from one of the best feelings of my career to one of the worst in just a matter of seconds, but fortunately it worked out.” Brett Gardner brought in Frazier on a groundout, and Judge came to bat with the bundled crowd on its feet. NEW YORK (AP) — The Houston Astros heated up their bullpen in a hurry, but it didn’t make any difference. Not on this night, not in a ballpark that kept pulsating with every pitch. No matter who manager A.J. Hinch signalled for, the New York Yankees would not be stopped. Somehow, the Astros squandered a late four-run lead and fell 6-4 yesterday, and now find themselves tied at two games apiece in the AL Championship Series. At least Hinch’s next move is an easy call: Bring on the beard. Dallas Keuchel will take the mound today in Game 5, with Houston hoping he can extend his remarkable run against the Yankees. “Obviously this next game, Dallas Keuchel, he’s pretty good at getting deep in the game,” Hinch said. “We’ll hand the ball to this bullpen with the lead tomorrow feeling good about it, if that’s the case.” Keuchel is prepared for a nice pregame reception, too. Bronx cheers, mostly. “You get boos against the Evil Empire at the home turf, it makes you feel good just because you’re doing your job correctly,” Keuchel said, hours before Houston blew a tremendous chance to move within one win of the World Series. Keuchel has been almost automatic against the Yankees, especially in October.
