D Robinson tees off with best amateur golfers in US, world By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net t wasn’t the type of performance that he anticipated, but Devaughn Robinson was still delighted to have been a part of a prestigious group of players in the US Mid-Amateur Championships. Last week in the championships at the Capital Country Club in Atlanta, Georgia, Robinson shot 72 and 71 to advance out of the Stroke Play tied with American Charles Waddell from Chicago, Illinois, who shot 75 and 68 as they finished in a two-day score of 143. That earned him a berth into bracket play with the number 16th spot. “The competition was good. We had the best amateur golfers in the United States and some from around the world,” said Robinson, who graduated from Texas Southern University with his bachelor’s degree in 2010 before

going on to earn his masters in 2012. “There were a lot of really strong players, some of them former pros and some were really high ranking amateurs, so it was good to see my game matched up against them. I had the better game, I just needed better execution.” In the round of 64, Robinson won over American Jon Lindstrom from Broomfield, Colombia. It came down to a playoff spot where Robinson went on to shoot a birdie on the first hole to stay alive. In the round of 32, Robinson again prevailed with a victory over American Ryan Sloane from Campbell, California. Robinson took the early lead and maintained it before pulling off the win on the 17th hole. However, the 29-yearold mechanical designer for Valco Instruments in Houston couldn’t get by American Bradford Tilley and was eliminated from further competition. Tilley, the number one seed and a

UB Mingoes fall to Broward, FNU THE University of the Bahamas continued their march towards becoming a part of the NAIA and its Sun Conference this past weekend with another road tour into Florida. A strengthened squad with their top producer from last year Stuart Hanna onboard left town early Thursday morning to play the US number two ranked Florida National University on Friday and thereafter NJCAA Broward College on Sunday. The Mingoes ran into a buzz saw on an otherwise wonderful rainy English football day as FNU totally dismantled every aspect of the team except for Mingoe pride. FNU was way beyond our scope of play. It was like The Bahamas playing Portugal, Italy and Brazil as the team had strong representation in its ranks from each of those countries and much more, said a press release. “FNU outran, outgunned and outplayed us at every position perhaps except for goalkeeper if you see the humour in that. “FNU soundly defeated UB Mingoes 12-0 and UB goalkeeper Michael Butler had an incredible 13 saves to stop an otherwise stomping of the Mingoes. “We kept our pride in the mud, rain and defeat,” said Mingoes’ head coach Dion Godet, who was assisted by Harvey Mullings. “We never dropped our heads in our match against the United Nations

LADY TRUCKERS, HITMEN WIN OPENERS IN NPSA FINALS THE defending champions Johnson’s Lady Truckers and the C&S Hitmen took the opening matches in their respective New Providence Softball Association championship series. On Sunday night in the Banker’s Field at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex, the Lady Truckers rolled past the Sunshine Auto Wildcats 15-13, while the Hitmen knocked off the BTC Elite Warriors 7-2. Here’s a summary of their matches: Lady Truckers 25, Lady Wildcats 13: Catcher Shavette Taylor produced a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring centre fielder Tyrice Curry as the pennant winners went up 15-9. Sunshine Auto made one last gallant effort, coming up with four runs in the seventh, thanks to consecutive run producing doubles from pitcher Mary ‘Cruise’ Sweeting, first sacker Chrshann Percentie and right fielder Garidette Curry, but it wasn’t enough. Taylor finished with a perfect 4-for-4 night at the plate with six RBI and a run scored to lead the Lady Wildcats’ offensive attack. Right fielder Keisha Pratt was 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored, Tyrice Curry ended up going 2-for-2 with two runs, designated player Theola Ferguson was 1-for-3 with a

At the onset we were truly in the thick of battle trading shots and tackles with Broward. UB gave up a free kick from about 30 yards out and the team went to sleep as a driven ball found space and thereafter the foot of a BC player.”

The team, playing in the midday sun, began to tire and then the wheel fell off the cart and Broward found “El Diablo” often. UB shot itself in the foot and made silly unfocused errors from top to bottom. “We had numerous opportunities in this game to score unlike the FNU game but we did not deliver,” Godet said. “This was not our finest hour and Broward College is not 10 goals better the UB. “We got sloppy, unfocused and therefore punished. That’s life.”

The Mingoes will spend the next two weeks preparing for the opening of the BFA’s senior men’s league. Last year the Mingoes collected some silverware as the B flight top team and it is expected that they will be promoted to the A flight this season. “The team is even stronger because of the out of country exposure and we will seek to use the lessons learnt at the local level. The senior league is slated to kick off October 29th with loads of tricks and treat,” said the release.

‘Catch Me If You Can’ Massacre has benefitted tremendously from philanthropist Sir Durward ‘Sea Wolf’ Knowles. With the local sailing community coming together next week to compete in the 100 Regatta in Montagu Bay, Johnson said he would like for his Lady In Red, Lady Nathalie to secure the win to show their gratitude to Knowles. “Sir Durward has been there with me from day one,” said Johnson of hosting his February sailing extravaganza in Montagu Bay. “Every year, including this year, he’s made a contribution to the regatta. With this being the regatta of this kind being held in his honour, we would like to be able to win the regatta for Sir Durward Knowles. I think that would be a fitting tribute for the contribution that he has made to us.” Knowles, who will celebrate his 100th birthday on November 2,

will be honoured next weekend when the local workboats as well as the Olympic-style sailing boats come together in a massive regatta in Montagu Bay. The National Family Island Regatta, the Bahamas Sailing Association and the Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources with responsibility for regattas will stage the blockbuster event. When: October 17-19 in Montagu Bay. More than 100 boats from the sloop sailing and Olympic-style competition are expected to compete in the free-for-all regatta as they give back and say thank you to the legendary Knowles, the oldest living Olympic sailing champion in the world. Johnson, who boasts of hosting the biggest regatta in Montagu Bay, said he feels that Knowles deserves all of the accolades he will get from the sailors because of

the contribution that he has made to the sport over the years. The Bahamas’ Olympic gold and bronze medallist in the Sunfish class has financially supported just about every regatta held in the country. All of the boat owners, skippers and sailors will be coming together to compete in a freefor-all regatta for the Bahamian centenarian. “I think it’s good that they are honouring Sir Durward,” Johnson said. “I like what they are doing because he deserves to be recognised for his contribution.” Johnson said Knowles has made a contribution to the St Valentine’s Massacre every year and they have been grateful for the support because it has helped to make the event a success. “I am very thankful to Sir Durward Knowles,” Johnson said. “Every year that I approach him, he has supported me. I don’t think I could do it without his support.”

The Bahamian national team standout is now the assistant coach of the Andrew College LadyTigers women’s basketball team, a National Junior College Athletic Association programme based in Cuthbert Georgia. “It is truly an honour and privilege to join coach [Courtney] Pritchett’s staff and the AC family,” Armbrister said in a press release. “I am thankful that he and the administration chose me to fill some big shoes. I believe in his vision for the programme, and I look forward to helping him take the programme to the next level and serving our student athletes both on and off of the court. Coach Pritchett has had an unbelievable impact on my life, even as I moved on to Georgia, we talked nearly every day. He believes in me and trusts me and I love Coach P”. According to Pritchett, Armbrister’s responsibilities will include coaching, player development and recruitment. “We are thrilled to have Shanea join our coaching staff. She is going to be able to connect really well

our student athletes and I am looking forward to watching her develop our players, especially our guards,” said Pritchett. “She has an outgoing and engaging personality, and I am confident that her unique ability to connect with individuals of all ages will bring a new energy to our efforts on the recruiting trail. Shanea holds a personal place in my heart, I feel like she is a part of my family. This will be a great opportunity for her.” The Lady Tigers compete in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association, the same conference where Armbrister received her start to her junior college career as a player with the Darton College Cavaliers. In her freshman season, she immediately became of the most dynamic freshmen in the NJCAA. The 6’2” wing was named a third-team All-American Association after she averaged 18.9 points, 8.4 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game. Nationally, Armbrister ranked No. 23 in scoring average and No. 9 in free throw percentage (84.4). As a sophomore she averaged 26.9 points per game for the season, shooting 59 per cent from the field and 87 per cent from the free throw line. She also averaged 7.2 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. Armbrister then progressed to the NCAA Division I level with the University of Georgia Lady Bulldogs in the Southeastern Conference. As a junior, she played in 21 games for the Bulldogs. After battling through a torn meniscus in the early part of the year she hit 45 per cent from three-point range, the best average on the team for players with 10 or more attempts. Over the season she averaged 2.2 points and one rebound per game. Her numbers improved last year as a senior when she received 16 starts and upped her averages across the board to 6.7 points and 4.4 rebounds per game in 31 appearances. Her senior season was highlighted by the Bulldogs’ appearance at the locally hosted Junkanoo Jam, which gave Armbrister an opportunity to compete at home. For Team Bahamas on the international scene, Armbrister led the Bahamas to the Caribbean Basketball Championship 2015 title. It marked the third time that the Bahamas has won the title, but the first time since the organisers changed it from CARICOM to the CBC. Armbrister was named the championship game’s most valuable player after she led the Bahamas with a game-high 16 points, seven rebounds, four steals and one blocked shot in the 55-51 win over defending champions Jamaica.

As a result, no champions have been crowned this year in the Bahamas Government Departmental Basketball Association. Already up 2-0 in the best-offive series at the AF Adderley Gymnasium, the Cybots had opened a 69-48 lead over the defending champions Police Crimestoppers in game three on Saturday night with seven minutes and 46 seconds on the clock. Man down! 5 QBs to replace the injured ‘studs’ in Fantasy I KNOW some of you fantasy football owners are still crying this morning. And, if you are, it’s because you probably had Aaron Rodgers on your team. I feel your pain, I’ve lost superstars to injury before. A big part of fantasy football is testing your GM skills to see if you can still make a run at your league title, despite the odds stacked against you, minus your ‘stud’ player. Replacing Rodgers is futile, but you’ve got to try. • Here are 5 QBs who you should pick up to replace Rodgers in your lineup. 1. JARED GOFF, Los Angeles Rams: Looking around leagues, he’s only 38 per cent owned. That seems low, but then again he has two straight games of sub-10 points in standard QB scoring. Those games were against the Seahawks and Jaguars, two outstanding defences against opposing QBs. I’d nab Goff as my starter immediately if I had Rodgers. 2. TYROD TAYLOR, Buffalo Bills: Taylor has six touchdowns through the air this year, despite a no name receiver corps, and 121 rushing yards. Throw in a tantalising upcoming schedule (vs. Bucs, vs. Raiders, at Jets, vs. Saints) and you’ve got some solid numbers on the horizon. 3. TREVOR SIEMIAN, Denver Broncos: Take a gamble here, high risk, high reward. On Sunday night, Siemian totalled 376 yards, but he has also tossed six interceptions this season, including a pair in the loss to the Giants on Sunday night.

Consistency is the big question here, but in certain weeks, he might break out as he did in Week 2 with four scores against the Dallas Cowboys. 4. JOSH McCOWN, New York Jets: McCown has had three games with two touchdowns and although the six INTs are a huge red flag, you know the Jets throw enough and might play a bunch of games from behind to make him a volume play. 5. TEDDY BRIDGEWATER, Minnesota Vikings: Consider Bridgewater a ‘dark horse’ candidate that could turn into a mid-season ‘steal.’ From all indications, it sounds like he’s getting ready to return from that horrific leg injury he suffered last preseason, and with Sam Bradford still out, the Vikes could turn to the guy who was supposed to be their starter in 2016. Don’t hesitate, if you have roster flexibility, stash Bridgewater on your roster now. OTHER NOTABLE INJURIES AND UPDATES: 1. LEONARD FOURNETTE RB JAGS : Fournette is expected to play in Week 7. Fournette said he just twisted his ankle “a little” late in the loss to the Rams in Week 6. Obviously, that’s good news, however given

Fournette’s history of foot problems, fantasy owners should be cautious. Pick up second string RB Chris Ivory if he’s available. 2. JAMEIS WINSTON QB BUCS: Winston reportedly has a sprained right AC joint, though it’s possible he can play through it. Winston exited Sunday’s game against Arizona after the first drive because of a shoulder injury but he said after the game that he expects to play in Week 7. With a matchup against the Bills on the horizon, Winston might be a don’t play even if healthy. 3. EMANUEL SANDERS WR BRONCOS: Initial X-rays were negative on Sanders’ ankle, but the results of an MRI on Monday were still pending. There’s a good chance Sanders misses at least one game which means Bennie Fowler and Jordan Taylor would likely step in and see more targets. 4. TYREEK HILL WR CHIEFS : Hill was checked for a concussion late in Kansas City’s loss to the Steelers on Sunday, but NBC’s Mike Florio reports that he did not suffer one. If everything is on the up and up, Hill should be fine for next Thursday’s game against the Raiders, but given the quick turnaround and the tricky nature of concussions, keep an eye on Hill right up until kickoff.

GREEN BAY, Wisconsin (AP) — Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy says quarterback Aaron Rodgers will have surgery on his broken right collarbone, and that his season could be over. McCarthy said yesterday that the two-time NFL MVP would have surgery in the near future. He says that there is no timeline for his potential return. “He’ll be out a minimum, a significant amount of time potentially the season could be over,” McCarthy said. “So, he’ll have surgery here in the near future and after we see how that goes, we’ll focus on getting

That’s all that really matters right now.” Rodgers got hurt in the first quarter of the 23-10 loss on Sunday at Minnesota. “We all knew — (quarterback coach Alex Van Pelt) and myself, when we talked to him immediately, I knew he was injured,” McCarthy said. “I think he knew right away.” Brett Hundley is now the starting quarterback. The Packers also promoted third-stringer Joe Callahan from the practice squad to become the backup quarterback. Cornerback Quinten Rollins was placed on injured reserve with an ankle injury to make room for Callahan.

Giants take road less travelled to 23-10 shocker in Denver By ARNIE STAPLETON Associated Press DENVER (AP) — One suspension, three season-ending surgeries, six sidelined starters and seven lineup changes to accommodate this whole mess. Not exactly the usual path to success, but one the New York Giants successfully navigated in a stunning 23-10 win Sunday night over the bewildered Denver Broncos. The Giants (1-5) controlled the trenches, rolling over the league’s best run defence for 148 yards and limiting the NFL’s third-best ground game to a meager 46 yards. “It was good that we could play this style of football and get a win,” Eli Manning said in his first game without injured wide receivers Odell Beckham Jr, Brandon Marshall and Dwayne Harris, all of whom got hurt last week. Manning threw for 128 yards, barely beating the 117 running back Orleans Darkwa gained on 21 carries. Manning connected five times with rookie tight end Evan Engram for 82 yards and a touchdown. “It’s a special win just with everything going on,” Manning said.

And a crushing loss for the Broncos (3-2), who failed to close in on Kansas City in the AFC West after the Chiefs were knocked off by Pittsburgh for their first loss Sunday. “It’s the National Football League,” Denver’s Von Miller said. “It’s not about who you’ve got playing for you or what stars are in the game or what the team looks like. Demaryius Thomas hobbled his way through a 10-catch night, and right tackle Menelik Watson left with a calf injury. Sanders was injured when safety Landon Collins undercut him in an attempt to intercept Siemian’s low throw. “I apologise for that,” Collins said. “I saw the quarterback throw the ball and I was trying to break on it and go get it and make a gamechanging play. ... Much love to him because I look up to him as a player.” Siemian came out himself after jamming his surgically repaired left shoulder into the ground while diving to keep cornerback Janoris Jenkins out of the end zone on his 43-yard pick-6 that put New York ahead 17-3 at the half. POSITIVE RECEPTION: Thomas had 133 yards on 10 catches, snapping a career-long seven-game drought without a 100-yard performance. However, he extended his streak without a touchdown catch to 11 games, also a career long.

Mahrez salvages 1-1 draw for Leicester against West Brom LEICESTER, England (AP) — Leicester failed to climb out of the English Premier League’s relegation zone after a 1-1 draw at home to West Bromwich Albion extended the team’s winless run to six matches yesterday. Riyad Mahrez salvaged a point for Leicester with an 80thminute equaliser at King Power Stadium, but it was another ponderous display by the hosts, who could be set for another season of struggle after their improbable title-winning campaign of 2015-16. Last season, Leicester was defending the title and plunged to within a point of the relegation zone before firing Claudio Ranieri, the manager who masterminded the unlikely charge to the Premier League trophy. They ended up pulling clear of trouble under Ranieri’s replacement, Craig Shakespeare. Now, Leicester has dropped into the bottom three, two points

from safety and on just six from eight games, though it has had a tough schedule. Mahrez’s goal was his first of the season and a reminder of his class that won him English soccer’s player of the season award in 2016. CELTA VIGO BEATS LAS PALMAS 5-2 MADRID (AP) — Iago Aspas got his first goals of the season in a hat trick in Celta Vigo’s 5-2 win over struggling Las Palmas in the Spanish league yesterday. After eight matches without a goal for club or country, the Spain international found the net once in the first half and twice in the second as Celta thrashed the home side despite playing a man down from the 52nd minute. Emre Mor and Pablo Hernandez also scored for Celta at Gran Canaria Stadium. Las Palmas got on the board through substitutes Vitolo and Loic Remy in second-half injury time. Celta goalkeeper Ruben Blanco was sent off with a straight red card for a committing a foul outside the area while trying to stop a breakaway. It was the fourth consecutive loss for Las Palmas, which dropped to the relegation zone with the result. The Canary Islands club has only two wins. Celta moved to 10th place. The red-bearded slugger from Southern California knew all about the history attached to this home run trot. On the 29th anniversary of Gibson’s celebrated pinch-hit homer that shocked Oakland in the 1988 World Series opener, Turner added another landmark shot to Los Angeles Dodgers postseason lore. Turner hit a three-run drive with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, and the Dodgers beat the Chicago Cubs 4-1 on Sunday to take a 2-0 lead in the NL Championship Series. “One of my earliest baseball memories was being at my grandma’s house and watching that game in ‘88 and seeing Gibby hit that homer,” said Turner, who wasn’t quite 4 years old at the time. “So yeah, it feels pretty cool. three years. A person with knowledge of the agreement tells The Associated Press that Aldridge will exercise the $22 million player option on his contract for the 2018-19 season. He will also get another two

years and $50 million tacked on, according to the person who spoke yesterday on condition of anonymity because the team has not announced the deal. The Spurs open the regular season against Minnesota

TIANJIN, China (AP) — Maria Sharapova won her first WTA title since returning from a doping ban after defeating Aryna Sabalenka to win the Tianjin Open on Sunday. The Russian, a tournament wild card, overcame Belarusian teenager Sabalenka 7-5, 7-6 (8) despite trailing heavily in both sets. Sharapova last won a title at the Italian Open in May 2015. The former top-ranked player and owner of five major titles, including the 2006 US Open, tested positive for the newly banned drug meldonium at the Australian Open in January 2016. That led to a 15-month doping ban, which expired in April. “Such a special, special tournament, and victory for me, one that I’ll remember forever,” Sharapova said. “Sometimes you never know when it will all come together but it happened to me this week in Tianjin.” Sharapova displayed resilience as she came from behind in both sets to overcome her 19-year-old opponent. Sabalenka led 4-1 in the opener and 5-1 in the second before relenting to Sharapova’s greater big-match experience. It was Sharapova’s 36th WTA singles title.
