HOME Is Where You Feel Safe By Mike Lightbourn

A home is more than just a place to unwind and sleep in. We want to feel secure and cocooned from danger in our homes. This is especially true for people who may feel more vulnerable. Never compromise on safety. Follow these precautions to make your home safe.

Security Layers

Install bright lights around your home, especially in dark corners. You can install motion detectors to the lights, although non-threatening things, like rats or lizards, may trigger them. Install timers on indoor and outdoor lights to give the impression someone’s always home. Install a reliable alarm system. Some people don’t like to arm their systems in case something harmless sets them off. This can be a real nuisance to neighbours. If this is the case, have a switch in your bedroom or an app on your phone to activate the alarm at any time. Security systems have become a lot more user-friendly and affordable over the years. They can monitor the home, detect suspicious activity and alert both you and the security company, which in turn will contact the police if necessary. Use security cameras to monitor your home through your computer or smart phone, as well as from a monitor inside your home.

Deadbolts, Frames and Pins

Install good deadbolts on your doors. Make sure the strike plate—the metal ring that holds the throw in a doorjamb – is sufficient. Avoid locks with short, inferior screws that attach the strike plate to the jamb. Install security hinge pins in doors. They act as deadbolts when the door is closed. Another layer of protection. How strong is your door frame? Can it be pried open with a crowbar?

Windows

Install burglar bars on your windows or good quality hurricane proof windows. They must be properly installed. Leave an escape exit in the event of a fire. This may involve padlocking one swinging bar. Make sure the key is always at hand in a safe, designated spot. Plant thorny bushes under windows. Yep, you heard me right. This old-

fashioned method still works if the intruder doesn’t know what’s been planted.

The Nosy Neighbour

As painful as it may be, a nosy neighbor can be your best weapon against intruders, along with neighbourhood watch groups. Get to know your neighbours and swap contact info. Let them know if you observe something suspicious on your street and they will more than likely reciprocate. Create a neighbourhood WhatsApp crime watch group and a list with everyone’s phone number, if there’s not one already. Don’t underestimate the built-in defense of a solid neighborhood network.

Keyed Up

Were the keys changed before you moved into your home? How many copies of keys are floating around? The previous owner or tenant will have copies if the locks weren’t changed; perhaps a housekeeper or caregiver will, too. Don’t hide spare keys under a mat or a potted plant. Give them to a family member or close friend instead.

Don’t Fumble

Mike Lightbourn is president of Coldwell Banker Lightbourn Realty

Giving out private information about where you are and what you plan nearby so you can call them and ask to do can put you in public danger.
