he Pan American Sports Organisation (PASO) has agreed to provide the Bahamas Olympic Committee with a grant for $200,000 for the reconstruction of a track and field facility at the Carl Oliver Stadium on the ground of the Huntley Christie High School in Nicholl’s Town, North Andros. Michael Tovan, a representative of Mondo Surfaces, attended a press conference yesterday at the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology where he outlined plans for the construction that will commence once he visits the facility today. BAHAMAS Flag Football League is all set to host its 8th annual tournament this Saturday and Sunday at the Winton rugby pitch. A total of 13 male and female teams from Freeport and Nassau are expected to compete in a three-game guarantee tournament with games starting at 8am on each day. This will be the first tournament held since 2015 as last year’s event had to be cancelled due to the passing of Hurricane Matthew.

In 2000, the facility was renamed the Carl Oliver Jr Stadium as a result of his role as a member of the third leg of the men’s 4 x 400 metre relay team that clinched the bronze medal at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. Wellington Miller, president of the BOC, a native of Andros, said it’s a proud day for all Androsians as they will benefit from a facility that will not only focus on track and field, but also soccer.

JONQUEL JONES TO JOIN FLAME IN CHINA DURING THE OFFSEASON By RENALDO DORSETT Tribune Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net HER last offseason post propelled Jonquel Jones into becoming the WNBA’s Most Improved Player, an All-Star and an All-WNBA Second Team selection, leaving fans and pundits eager to see what this offseason will bring. Jones’ offseason commitments will take her to China this summer as she joins the roster of the Shanxi Flame in the Women’s Chinese Basketball Association (WCBA). The WCBA is the top-tier professional women’s basketball league in China and is the women’s counterpart to the Chinese Basketball Association. Shanxi Flame became notable internationally when the Minnesota Lynx perennial AllStar Maya Moore joined the club for the 2012-2013 season. The Flame followed by winning three consecutive WCBA championships. Jones was selected No. 5 overall by Woori Bank in last July’s Draft following the completion of the WNBA season. She ended her time in the Korean Basketball League with one of her best games of the season and a championship title for her club. She posted 27 points, 25 rebounds and three blocks in an 83-72 win for Woori Bank over the Samsung Life Blue Minx to complete a three-game sweep and claim the 2017 title, the fifth consecutive

Young triathletes in CARIFTA Triathlon and Aquathon Championships IN April, Caribbean triathlon federations, including Bahamas Triathlon Association (BTA), met in Miami with the intention of implementing the first ever CARIFTA Triathlon and Aquathon Championships. After voting, it was unanimously decided that Barbados would be the host nation for the 2017 games.

Now, the event is set to take place this weekend at the Barbados Aquatic Center and Gymnasium Complex where 29 countries are invited to participate in the event, with an expectation of 50 to 70 competitors in age groups ranging from 11-12, 13-15 and 16-19. The CARIFTA Championships will include triathlon, aquathon and mixed-relay formats, with distances varying based on age groups. By having this event, the best youth and junior triathletes in the region will have the opportunity to showcase their talent and compete against each other. “Significant for development of the sport in the region and critical to the development of young triathletes who aspire to represent their country and compete at a high level,” said Darren Treasure, president of the Barbados Federation of Island Triathletes. The BTA has named the team that will be participating in the First Carifta Championships. They comprise of the following:

Sailors Holowesko and McKinney following in footsteps of ‘Sea Wolf’ EVEN as icon Sir Durward ‘Sea Wolf’ Knowles is still making headlines at home long past his retirement, the sport of sailing continues to sail on with the distinguished performances from Mark Holowesko and Gavin McKinney. One month after McKinney made history as the fifth Bahamian to win a 5.5 Metre Class world title, Holowesko improved on his runner-up position by winning the Régates Royales Cannes Trophée Panerai last week in Cannes, France. McKinney, still celebrating his triumph over Holowesko at the International 5.5 Metre Class Association’s 2017 World Championships in Benodet, France last month, opted not to compete in the latter championships. Knowles, the pacesetter, must be sitting proudly at his home on the Eastern Road relishing in the continued success of the sport as he prepares to celebrate his 100th birthday next month and his achievement as the oldest living Olympic sailing gold medallist. The sport has enjoyed its share of accomplishments from Knowles’ exploits to those of three-time world champion Donnie Martinborough and now through the achievements of McKinney and Holowesko. Just before his centenarian birthday bash on November 2, the sailing community will come together from both the Olympic style and traditional workboat competition to honour Knowles in a gigantic sailing regatta October 27-29 in Montagu Bay. One of the organisers is hoping that the Bahamas

Government will eventually name the stretch of water from the sailing site along the eastern end the Sir Durward Knowles Harbour and his portrait placed on the $100 bill for his philanthropic contributions to the country. At some point during the free-for-all regatta, either at the official opening or closing ceremonies, the organisers could also take the time out to heap their accolades on both McKinney and Holowesko for a job well done. Many also believe that because of their impact on the local communities at regattas and homecomings, sailing should be deemed the national sport of the country over cricket, which is seldom played by as many Bahamians as they did in the past at Haynes Oval or Windsor Field. That’s a topic for debate at another time. In the meantime, the Bahamas continues to rack up the recognition in other sports overseas, including golf, basketball, softball and tennis. Robinson teeing off Congrats to Devaughn Robinson, winner of his first title at the Greater Houston City Amateur Championships at the Memorial Park Golf Course in Houston, Texas, over the weekend.

Robinson, a 29-year-old mechanical designer for Valco Instruments living in Houston with his Grand Bahamian wife Fabricia Robinson, will be back in action this weekend in the United States Mid Amateur Championships in Atlanta, Georgia. This could be a big breakthrough for the country if Robinson can emerge as the first Bahamian to win a major US amateur championship on the heels of his historic feat this past weekend. Double trouble in Turkey Most people were hoping to see Jonquel Jones and Waltiea Rolle going headto-head in the Women’s National Basketball Association in the United States. But that could possibly come in Turkey as the two female professional players have taken their games to Europe in the aftermath of the WNBA Finals. Both at 6-foot-6 and playing centre pose an intriguing match-up if it materialises in the coming weeks. But it will still be even more thrilling to see them matched against or alongside each other in the prestigious WNBA in the next year or so. Next generation star There have been quite a number of Bahamian

The latest is Kerrie Cartwright, the daughter of Sean Cartwright and Kim O’Kelly, former national men and women champions and long-time national team players and coaches. The younger Cartwright has surged onto the women’s tennis professional scene where she’s putting in the mileage competing in Europe and the United States in singles and doubles on the International Tennis Federation’s tour. Could she be the first Bahamian female player to make the breakthrough competing on the women’s

top pro league around the world in the major tournaments like the Australian Open, Wimbledon, French and US Open? Since Mark Knowles’ retirement, there were a few players who attempted to follow in his footsteps. Hopefully Cartwright will ascend to that level on the female side in the not-toodistant future. Power of bright young stars on the long ball Last month, the men’s national softball team returned home from the Dominican Republic having booked their ticket to the Central American and Caribbean Games, set for July 19-August 3 in Barranquilla, Colombia.

I’m told that it will be track, but there will be more activities that will be able to be played there.” Through their connection with PASO, Miller said they would seek to provide more funding to have other facilities constructed throughout the Bahamas. Carlton Bowleg, the newly elected MP for North Andros and the Berry Islands, said they welcome the project with open arms. “This is something that is going to go very far in the community of North Andros,” he said. “Right now, it is a struggle in North Andros with employment and this will provide jobs for the people.” Bowleg said Oliver has done a lot in terms of recognition for North Andros and so they are delighted that the facility that bears his name will be remodeled and reinvigorate the interest of some of the top athletes returning there to compete. “I look forward to the completion of this event so that we can get more people to come to North Andros and the Berry Islands,” he said. “We look forward to the next six months and more things coming out of the island.” Tovan said the Bahamas has become a top-notch location for track and field, judging from the staging of the past three IAAF

World Relays and the Carifta Games and other sporting events that have been hosted at the Thomas A Robinson National Stadium. “The Bahamas is now becoming an important player in sporting events in track and field,” he said. “So congratulations to all involved in getting this stadium constructed.” He noted that he would have visited the facility today, and he will return to their head office where they will produce a surface that will be a combination of training and competing to put down in the facility over an estimated six-month period. While it will take about two weeks for their staff to produce the surface, Tovan said it would then be sent to the Bahamas for its final approval. Having come certified from their company, Tovan said there wouldn’t be any issue with meeting all of the international requirements as their company will ensure that it meets all of the requirements before they turn the facility over to the Bahamas. “It won’t be the same track that we have in Rio (Brazil where the 2016 Olympic Games was held). It will be similar,” Tovan said. “You will be able to hold a national championship there.” Once the facility is completed, Tovan said it would provide an opportunity for the residents of Andros to erect concession stands where they can earn an income. He said when they get ready for the construction, they will also

employ a number of residents to assist in making it one of the best facilities to train in the region because it’s a known fact that everybody wants to come to the Bahamas. Oliver, who remembers when he attended the Mastic Point Primary School and was not one of the top athletes but was allowed to compete on the relay team by his physical education teacher. Their team went on to win the title and, as they say, the rest was history for Oliver. Thanking all of the stakeholders for their support in making the upgrade a reality, Oliver said with more events expected to be staged in the facility, they will have to provide more housing to accommodate the people when they show up. “Currently we have on board in February, the North Andros High Track Invitational,” he said. “I could see that event being ballooned much higher than it is right now. One of the reasons we don’t have all of the top athletes going there is the condition of the surface. “Compared to the time that I ran on it, it’s not in the best condition. I wouldn’t recommend athletes training on it, especially in spikes. It’s too hard to penetrate. But I do believe this is a step in the right direction, not just for North Andros, but the whole of Andros.” With a much better facility to train on when completed, Oliver put the rest of the Bahamas on notice, indicating that they can

expect to see a lot more outstanding athletes coming from North Andros. Timothy Munnings, director of Sports in the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, said as a former teammate of Oliver, he too is looking forward to the reconstruction of the facility. “I was there when the stone was laid at the naming of the track, we ran on the track when we started our tour for the Olympics and so it’s not an easy track to run on, so we welcome the wonderful change,” he said. With so many people who attended the North Andros Track Invitational in the past, Munnings said he expects that the numbers will increase when the reconstruction is done. He also commended Oliver, who has served as an excellent ambassador for the country. “This is the first synthetic facility that will be done in the Bahamas outside of New Providence and Grand Bahama,” he said. “We are very excited about this opportunity that will be coming to North Andros.” When the facility is completed, Oliver said he’s looking forward to his Olympic teammates, including Munnings, Avard Moncur, Troy McIntosh and Chris ‘Fireman’ Brown, joining him in a meet that they hope to put on to christen the new facility. He said the spectators might just get a treat when they suit up to run a relay, but he’s not certain how well they will do.

On the season she averaged 15.8 points, 14.3 rebounds and 2.8 blocks – all team leads - in 24 minutes per game for Woori Bank in 38 games. She also shot 55 per cent from the field, 39 per cent from three. They finished the year 36-2 and undefeated on the road. At the league’s award ceremony, Jones earned the Foreign

Most Valuable Player Award, Defensive Player of the Year award and was named “Best Five” in the league. Her performance led WNBA general managers to vote Jones as the players most likely to have a breakout season in the WNBA. She finished the year averaging 15.5 points and 11.9 rebounds per game - a dramatic increase from her rookie season when she averaged 6.8 points and 3.7 rebounds per game. She also set a new WNBA single-season record with 403 rebounds for the season and

added 20 double-doubles. Many of Jones’ Connecticut Sun teammates have already announced their offseason commitments as well. Jones will be joined in China by teammate Lynetta Kizer, who will be spending the offseason with Shandong Sports Lottery. For the second consecutive season, Alyssa Thomas will return to South Korea as a member of the Samsung Life Blue and Shekinna Stricklen will return to the Korean League for the third time with Jones’ old club, Woori Bank.

The team, managed by Perry Seymour, did it on the long ball power of two bright young stars in Sherman Ferguson and Grand Bahamian Desmond Russell. Alcott Forbes was the workhorse for the pitching department that included Lyle Sawyer from Abaco and Thomas Davis and Martin Burrows. But it’s obvious that if the team is going to regain some of its prominence when he represented the country, Richard ‘the Lion Heart’ Johnson, who served as one of the two coaches on the team, will have to play as pivotal role in that area going forward. The Bahamas Softball Federation, headed by Ted Miller, should be commended for becoming the first team sport to earn the rights to represent the Bahamas at the games. Hopefully there will be others like volleyball and basketball to follow suit. CONDOLENCES: FAREWELL SPY While we look forward to the improvement in the pitching department as a result of the efforts of Johnson, I want to take this time to remember the late Randy ‘Spy’ Gibson. Many remember Gibson, who lost one of his eyes but he was still an outstanding pitcher who left his impression on the fast, moderate and slow-pitch leagues. Gibson, 57, didn’t have the ability to excel to compete on the international team but he was one of the top pitchers who was able to hold his own at the national level. May his soul rest in peace.

SPORTS NOTES FINANCIAL BOWLING THE top scorer in the Financial Bowling League last night was Alcondo Hepburn of Moonlight Strikers with a 214 second high game and a 568 high three game set. The runner-up was Clayton Gardiner of Leno Corporate Services with a 219 high game and a 546 second high set. The MVP for the ladies was Betsy Taylor of Best Deal Kirki Bar with a 217 high game and a 568 high three game set. She was followed by Joy Lockhart of BTC Night Hawks with a 470 second high set. Germany, England seal World Cup qualification, Poland close By CIARAN FAHEY Associated Press GERMANY and England booked places at the World Cup in Russia next year, while Poland was made to wait for qualification in Europe despite thrashing Armenia 6-1 yesterday. Defending champion Germany never looked like missing out as early goals helped it to beat Northern Ireland 3-1 in Belfast, maintaining its perfect record with nine wins from nine games in Group C. England qualified in contrasting fashion, scraping past Slovenia 1-0 thanks to Harry Kane’s injury-time strike in a poor team performance at Wembley Stadium. Robert Lewandowski scored a hat trick in Yerevan, Armenia, to become Poland’s all-time highest scorer and put his team on the verge of qualification. A draw later between Montenegro and Denmark would have meant Poland clinched Group E, but Christian Eriksen gave Denmark a 1-0 win in Podgorica to keep alive its slim hope of topping the group. Group winners qualify automatically for the finals in Russia. • Here’s a closer look at the action across the three groups: GROUP C Northern Ireland hadn’t lost a qualifier in Windsor Park for four years, but it got off to a bad start when Germany’s Sebastian Rudy fired the ball inside the top corner from distance in the second minute. Sandro Wagner brought a good save from Michael McGovern and hit the post before he finally scored in the 21st to give Germany a comfortable lead. HAMILTON AIMING TO BUILD CHAMPIONSHIP LEAD AT THE JAPANESE GP SUZUKA, Japan (AP) — Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton can widen his lead when Formula One wraps up its Asian leg at the Japanese Grand Prix on Sunday. With five races remaining, Hamilton leads Ferrari rival Sebastian Vettel by 34 points after finishing second at the Malaysian GP. Vettel, despite starting last on the grid, finished fourth in Sepang. Hamilton has won twice before in Suzuka, in 2014 and 2015, and was runner-up to former Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg in last year’s race. A win in Suzuka would move Hamilton a step closer to a third F1 title in four years with Mercedes and his fourth overall. Mercedes was slower than Ferrari and Red Bull for the second straight race in Malaysia after similarly struggling for pace in Singapore. “We’re still leading the championship, we’ve still got a great car,” Hamilton said yesterday. “Each race is just really trying to understand more about the car because there’s constantly something new thrown in the mix, (that) can catch us off guard.” Mercedes was debating whether to run the team’s latest aerodynamic package for the Japanese GP. “After Malaysia, we have found ourselves analysing our problems, beginning to understand their causes and working on solutions,” Mercedes head of motorsport Toto Wolff said. “While we work to improve in those areas, we must not forget the many strengths we have shown this season,” Wolff added. “Our car has taken more pole positions and race wins than any other and we lead both championships.” Vettel, who had a new engine for the race in Malaysia, is a four-time winner in Japan.

By PETER PRENGAMAN AND SARAH DILORENZO Associated Press RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — The president of the Brazilian Olympic Committee was arrested yesterday amid an investigation into a vote-buying scheme to bring the Olympics to Rio de Janeiro. Carlos Nuzman, who is also an honourary International Olympic Committee member, was held for questioning last month by Brazilian and French authorities. They said he was a central figure in channelling at least $2 million to Lamine Diack, a former IOC member from Senegal who helped secure votes when Rio was picked in 2009 by the IOC. Brazilian authorities have said the behind-the-scenes dealings to win the vote amounted to a “criminal organisation,” led by Sergio Cabral, the former governor of Rio de Janeiro who has been jailed on a different corruption conviction. Securing the games for Rio was just the first step in the massive scheme, according to Nuzman’s arrest order. Winning the Olympic bid led to massive public investment in infrastructure projects and services contracts, opening a pipeline of money that was used to reward friends and allies and pay bribes. Authorities said Nuzman would be held because investigators found he tried to hamper the investigation by regularising assets likely gained with illicit money. About two weeks after being held for questioning, Nuzman amended his tax declaration to add about $600,000 in income, the order said. “He clearly acted to obstruct the investigation,” said the order, adding that the lack of a clear origin of the extra money “indicated it was illicit.” Leonardo Gryner, director-general of operations

In Nuzman’s last 10 years as Brazilian Olympic Committee president, his net worth increased 457 per cent, according to investigators. The 75-year-old Nuzman was one of the most prominent figures in bringing the games to Rio. Prosecutors previously laid out a scheme in which Nuzman arranged for

businessman Arthur Cesar de Menezes Soares Filho’s company to pay Lamine Diack $2 million into an account in the name of Diack’s son, Papa Massata Diack. Yesterday, prosecutors said they have since uncovered emails showing the younger Diack asked for more money and received it. Schenider said she was surprised by the attempts to obstruct the investigation but that the machinations would not thwart justice. “We are showing that Brazil is no longer a paradise for corrupt people, for thieves. We are getting to people who never thought they would have to answer for their actions.” In a statement, the IOC said it was fully cooperating with the investigation and conducting its own probe. “Given the new facts, the IOC ethics commission may consider provisional measures while respecting Mr Nuzman’s right to be heard,” said the statement.

Altuve hits three homers, Astros beat Red Sox 8-2 in ALDS opener By KRISTIE RIEKEN Associated Press HOUSTON (AP) — Jose Altuve hit three home runs in an unprecedented show of power for the diminutive major league batting champion as the Houston Astros roughed up Chris Sale and the Boston Red Sox 8-2 yesterday in Game 1 of the AL Division Series. Buoyed by chants of “MVP” in each trip to the plate, the 5-foot-6 Altuve hit solo homers in the first and fifth innings off Sale. He connected again in the seventh off reliever Austin Maddox to give Houston a quick boost in the best-offive series. It was just the 10th time a player hit three homers in a postseason game, and first since Pablo Sandoval for the Giants in the 2012 World Series opener against Detroit. Babe Ruth did it twice. After Altuve rounded the bases on his third solo homer, which landed on the train tracks atop left field, George Springer grabbed the All-Star second baseman’s right biceps and examined it as if searching for an explanation for his out of the ordinary pop. He failed to appear at a scheduled news conference but later issued a statement via the ATP. “I picked up a strain to the calf. It’s hard to know the extent of it, I’ll have to wait because it’s too soon to have an exact evaluation,” Raonic said. “It happened when the score was deuce. I felt a sharp pain at the back of my leg. I will head home now and get medical attention. “It’s been a difficult and frustrating year. I obviously wish I could have focused on tennis more rather than chasing help all the time.”
