n the first of several matchups this season between the country’s premier basketball talents, Deandre Ayton had the better individual performance in his debut for the Phoenix Suns but Buddy Hield and the Sacramento Kings came away with the win. Both teams tipped off their NBA preseason slate Monday night and the Kings claimed the 106-102 victory at the Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix, Arizona. Hield finished with six points, four rebounds and three assists but Ayton emerged as the main storyline with 24 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots. The two players met head-to-head when Ayton rejected Hield at the rim and forced a turnover midway through the second quarter. Ayton shot 9-16 from the field and was 6-8 from the free throw line in 30 minutes. “Obviously coach didn’t want to overwork us, he really wanted us to just get a feel of the game so I just took advantage of the minutes I had to work with and I had a lot of fun. You work so hard in the offseason to get yourself in NBA-ready shape, you can have a lot of fun when you’re not fatigued.” Ayton connected with second year forward Josh Jackson for several alleyoops off pick-and-roll opportunities. “That man is big on his bigs rolling to the basket. As soon as I screen, the ball is in the air and I just got to go get it. That’s just Josh, he will find you everytime,” Ayton said. “All you have to do is listen to the guys that’s been here before you and you will succeed.” Jackson finished with a team high six assists. “I’ve known him [Ayton] since I

Jazz chosen as top prospect at shortstop for the D-backs By RENALDO DORSETT Tribune Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net THE postseason accolades continued for Arizona Diamondbacks prospect Jazz Chisholm, when he was named an organisational All-Star. Each offseason, minor league baseball’s official website (MiLB.com) goes position-by-position across each system and honours the players – regardless of age or prospect status – who had the best seasons in their organisation. Chisholm was chosen as the top prospect at shortstop for the Diamondbacks and finished the season ranked No.2 overall. “Jazz really grew up this year,” said Mike Bell, vice president of player development at Arizona. “He matured off the field and as a player with his discipline and knowledge during the game. He hits for a ton of power, particularly from the shortstop

position, and he played some good defence as the year went on. “Some of his best production came late in the year, which was another great sign.” His season will continue in the Arizona Fall League with the Salt River Rafters when the league opens on October 9. The Rafters have MLB affiliations with the Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies, Miami Marlins, Minnesota Twins and Washington Nationals. Just last week, the franchise announced that the 20-year-old shortstop was named its Minor League Player of the Year. On the season between two clubs, he hit .272 (124for-456)/.329 OBP/.513 SLG with 23 doubles, six triples, 25 home runs, 70 RBI, 39 walks, 17 stolen bases and 79 runs scored in 112 games between the Single-A Kane County Cougars and the Single-A Advanced Visalia Rawhide.

JAZZ CHISHOLM A Midwest League midseason All-Star, Chisholm led all D-backs farm system players in home runs, and ranked among the leaders in runs (3rd), triples (T-5th), RBI (7th), slugging pct. (8th) and walks (T-9th). Chisholm began his season with Kane County, appeared in 76 games for the Cougars and hit .244 with 43 RBI, 17 doubles, four triples and 17 doubles.

Chisholm also posted an on-base percentage of .311, slugging percentage of .472 and OPS of .783 in 307 at bats. In his final game with the Cougars, he hit two home runs and set career highs with five hits and five RBIs. He received a promotion in July when the Diamondbacks assigned him to the Rawhide. Through 36 games with the Rawhide, Chisholm hit .329 with a .369 OBP, a .966 OPS, slugging .597, 49 hits, 10 home runs, two triples, six doubles, 27 RBI, scored 27 runs with nine stolen bases. The Rawhide eventually finished as runners-up to the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes in the California League Championship series. A torn meniscus cut short Chisholm’s 2017 season with the Cougars. Last year, he played in just 29 games - hit .248 with, three stolen bases, slugging .358, an onbase percentage of .325, an OPS of .683, 12 RBI and one home run.

NY METS RELEASE CHAMP STUART By RENALDO DORSETT Tribune Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net AFTER his third season at the Double-A level, Champ Stuart was released by the Binghampton Rumble Ponies and the New York Mets organization. Stuart was one of 49 minor leaguers released by the Mets last week. The 25-year-old had the most challenging season of his six years thus far in the minor leagues. In 55 games with the Rumble Ponies, he posted career lows with a .136 batting average, 19 runs, two doubles seven RBI, a .280 OBP and a .544 OPS. His 11 stolen bases were the lowest total since his 2013 rookie season in the Appalachian League. He began the season hitless in 23 of the first 28 games and was his hitting just .094 in that timespan. He also had two separate stint on the seven-day disabled list over the course of the year. In 101 games last season with the Rumble Ponies, Stuart led the Eastern League with 35 stolen bases, hit .222, slugging .331, an OBP of .310, an OPS of .641 and five home runs. Stuart was a 2013 sixthround pick by the Mets. A second generation professional player, “Champ” is the son of Jervis Sr and Cicely Stuart. The elder Stuart had a budding minor league baseball career of his own in the mid-1980s. He joined the Baltimore Orioles farm system in 1984 and advanced to Class A baseball in 1985. Stuart played his rookie season with the Tennessee-based Kingston Mets before he received the call to Class-A. A Bimini native, in his three-year collegiate career, Stuart was a two-time All-South Athletic Conference selection at Brevard College. He was promoted to Single-A baseball and finished with a productive first season with the Savannah Sand Gnats of the Class A South Atlantic League.

UB Mingoes get 3-0 win over Dynamos Football Club in preseason scrimmage THE UB Mingoes men’s soccer team defeated the Dynamos Football Club 3-0 in a preseason scrimmage Sunday as the Mingoes look to defend their Bahamas Football Association (BFA) championship title. Stuart Hanna, the team’s leading scorer last season, scored twice - once on a penalty and in the 80th minute. Tevin Lewis scored the other goal for the Mingoes in the 65th minute in the match at The Roscow AL Davies Soccer Field. “This was a good first local preseason game where a lot of the new players on the team were able to get their feet wet,” Hanna said. “We were able to see where

we fall short and where we need to improve in order to remain the top club in the country. We need to improve on accurate passing in the final third as well as we need to move the ball faster.” The Mingoes won the BFA A-Division last season. The BFA season is scheduled to open on October 21. The scrimmage also gave coach Dion Godet a chance to try out some players in different positions and in different combinations heading into the season. “In the first half, I played not necessarily my strongest squad and they held their own and they earned the right to be on the

pitch,” he said. “Then we put on the stronger squad in the second half and being a team that’s very fit we were able to get into a groove and we played some good football today.” Coach Godet pointed out that the Dynamos Club is no pushover and the fact that the team held its own gave him a good feeling for the season. “I saw a lot of maturity from my players and I was pleased with the start,” he said. “Hopefully we continue to grow on this as we continue into the season.” The Mingoes ended last BFA season with a 8-1-0 record and the league championship.

‘KEEN COMPETITION’ AT ANNUAL PARADISE ISLAND OPEN SR GOLF TOURNEY ON behalf of the Bahamas Golf Federation, Atlantis and the Ocean Club Golf Course recently hosted the annual Paradise Island Open Senior Golf tournament. “The event was held over two days in windy conditions but the competition was still very keen,” said a press release. The Net Division was won by young Heathcliffe Kane with a score of 134 or -10 under par. Kelsey Rolle beat out Ian Howard on a countback for 2nd with a score of 140. Howard finished 3rd with the same score. Pablo Nahmias defended his title from 2017 and emerged as the Gross Division winner with a score of 144 - 2 shots better than the previous year. Paul Tsavoussis also repeated his 2nd place

finish with 153 and third was Peter McIntosh at 155. Kent Bethel from Abaco won the Senior Division with a score of 142 followed by another Abaconian, Darren Roberts, in 2nd with 152. Third was Chris Harris from Freeport with 153. The Super Senior Division was led by Freeport golfers Bobby Rose and Gaston Lampron who finished 1st and 2nd with scores of 133 and 139 respectively. Third was Peter Auberg with 142. “The BGF extends its thanks to Atlantis and Ocean Club on another successful event. The next event on the BGF calendar is the BGF Classic at Albany on October 6th. This is also the final event for the Sands Beer Cup so golfers will have a chance to win 2 sets of prizes,” said the release.

was like a freshman in high school,” Jackson said. “He’s a competitor and when I’m coming down the lane and I know he’s on the side rolling to the basket, it’s a pretty easy decision for me.” The rookie centre was most encouraged by his three blocked shots and effort on the defensive end. “On defence I talked a lot when I was out there. I think I held my guards on communication, with pick and rolls, down screens, telling them when to go under the screens, off ball screens as well for the flares and just being in their ear to help my teammates know where they are, if they’re by themselves on an island or just being their backup and if their man breaks the paint I’m always there to try to protect the basket and I think I did a great job on my verticality, I’ve just got to get better.” Head Coach Igor Kokoškov also noted Ayton’s effort on defence and testing his young players on their ability to close out games. Ayton missed his final four shots, his only missed free throws and picked up an offensive foul in the final minute. “I think he was engaged. He’s a playmaker defensively, too, so that’s something that he can command. We have three young guys and the benefit of (preseason games) is having young guys on the court to see how they perform and learn from their mistakes,” Kokoškov said. “We purposely left those three guys on the court to see if we can close with them.”

Hield shot just 3-10 from the field, including 0-2 from three-point range. Suns will play a five-game preseason schedule which tips off with three home games and concludes with two on the road. The Suns face New Zealand Breakers of Australia’s National Basketball League tonight and Portland Trail Blazers on October 5. The road slate is highlighted by a matchup against the defending NBA champions Golden State Warriors on October 8. For the Kings, they follow the matchup against the Suns with a back-toback set at Los Angeles on October 4 and in Seattle versus Golden State on October 5. The Kings return to the Golden One Center in Sacramento for its preseason home opener versus Maccabi Haifa on Monday, October 8. The Kings round out their home exhibition schedule when they host the Utah Jazz Thursday, October 11 and concludes with a matchup against the Portland Trailblazers on Friday, October 12. Ayton and Hield will face each other four times over the course of the regular season as Pacific Division rivals in the Western Conference. The Suns will host the first of the four meetings, December 4 at Talking Stick Resort Arena. The Suns will also host game two on January 8. The venue shifts for game three when Hield and the Kings host the Suns February 10 at Golden 1 Center. The final regular-season meeting between the teams takes place on March 23 in Sacramento.

In 2016 he had a season of several milestones, including an appearance as a pinch runner in the final Grapefruit League game for the Mets in spring training. His last call-up was also preluded by a stellar regular season, and an offseason spent in the Arizona Fall League. The league attracts many of the top prospects in the minor leagues and is designed for these prospects to refine their skills and perform in game settings in front of major and minor league baseball scouts and team executives, who are in attendance at almost every game. He continued with the Port St Lucie Mets in Single-A Advanced, which led to a Double-A call-up with Binghamton. Through 114 games in both leagues, Stuart hit .240 with 34 RBI and eight home runs. He has also totalled an OBP of .319, slugging percentage of .349 an OPS of .663 and his aforementioned 40 stolen bases.

BROWNS PLACE CB TERRANCE MITCHELL ON INJURED RESERVE By TOM WITHERS AP Sports Writer CLEVELAND (AP) — The Browns placed starting cornerback Terrance Mitchell on injured reserve with a broken right wrist. Mitchell got hurt in the second quarter of Sunday’s 45-42 loss at Oakland. He underwent surgery on Monday, when coach Hue Jackson said he didn’t think Mitchell’s injury was season-ending. The team can designate two players to return from injured reserve after six weeks. Mitchell broke his wrist while breaking up a pass intended for Jordy Nelson. Following the play, Mitchell grabbed his arm and immediately went to the sideline. To replace Mitchell, the Browns signed Jeremiah McKinnon from their practice squad. McKinnon is in his first NFL season out of Florida International. He was originally signed by Dallas in 2016. Mitchell, who signed with Cleveland as unrestricted free agent earlier this year, had 19 tackles and one interception in four starts. Jackson said either E.J. Gaines or T.J. Carrie will replace Mitchell as a starter.

RUNNING BACKS Robert Turbin, Indianapolis (0.3 per cent owned): Turbin returns from a four-game suspension this week. The veteran can bring a stabilising presence to the Colts’ 29th-ranked rushing game. Turbin is an adequate ball carrier and scored seven TDs two years ago. He has flex potential, with Marlon Mack not being able to stay healthy, and Nyheim Hines possibly complementing him as a pass-catcher. The Colts play on a short week this Thursday, but add Turbin for possible impact thereafter. Alfred Blue, Houston (1.9): Lamar Miller has rushed for 59 yards on 24 carries in the past two games, and he sat out the fourth quarter in the Week 4 win over Indianapolis. Miller has never lived up to expectations since coming to Houston and it would not be surprising to see Blue start to cut into his workload even more. Ty Montgomery, Green Bay (40.0): Injuries are starting to pile up at the WR position for Green Bay and despite the recent buzz about Aaron Jones, this remains a pass-first offence. Montgomery is a former wide receiver and has familiarity with Aaron Rodgers. He has caught eight passes for 105 yards in his past two games and is

Mike Davis, Seattle (0.2): He was a surprise starter over Rashaad Penny when Chris Carson (ankle) was declared a late inactive on Sunday. Davis stepped in and rushed for 101 yards and two scores. Carson has been riddled by injuries early in his pro career and the rookie Penny does not seem to have the confidence of the coaching staff yet. Davis can at least be a short-term option. Don’t bid too heavily, though, as he may only serve you well enough for a game or two. WIDE RECEIVERS Willie Snead, Baltimore (5.5): We are witnessing the re-emergence of

the Snead we saw in his first two pro seasons with New Orleans. The resurgent Baltimore passing game has re-energised Snead fantasywise from a PPR perspective. He has scored in double figures in three of four games so far in that format and he is a fine bye week plug-in. Keke Coutee, Houston (0.5): The fourth round rookie subbed in for Will Fuller and tied a modern NFL record for catches in a pro debut with 11 receptions vs. Indianapolis. There have been some questions about why Fuller was removed from the game and did not see second half action, but he is injury-prone and Coutee, who finished with 109 receiving yards, has a chance to stay relevant in the Texans passing game. Chester Rogers, Indianapolis (0.3): With T.Y. Hilton hurting,

LA Rams remain the unanimous top team in latest AP Pro32 poll By SIMMI BUTTAR AP Sports Writer NEW YORK (AP) — The Rams have turned the opening quarter of the NFL’s regular season into their own version of “La La Land.” The Rams have gotten off to a dominant start. They are 4-0 and have outscored their opponents by a league-leading combined 73

points so far this season and have the NFL’s most potent offense, averaging 468.5 yards a game. All of that adds up to the Rams repeating as the unanimous top team in the latest AP Pro32 poll . For the second consecutive week, the Rams received all 12 first-place votes and 384 points in balloting yesterday by media members who regularly

cover the NFL. The Rams leave Hollywood, heading out on the road for the next three weeks, as they look to stay perfect. “The Rams are 4-0 for the first time since 2001, which is fitting, because (coach) Sean McVay and (quarterback) Jared Goff are putting on their own great offensive show,” said Jenny Vrentas of The Monday Morning Quarterback. The Kansas City Chiefs, who overcame a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter to top the Denver Broncos 27-23 on Monday night, remained at No. 2. “Patrick Mahomes does things every week that leave you awe-inspired,” Newsday’s Bob Glauber said. “A modern-day Brett Favre, Mahomes brought back the Chiefs against the Broncos with some of the best playmaking you’ll ever see from an NFL quarterback.” The Jacksonville Jaguars inched up a spot to No. 3 after routing the New York Jets 31-12. The Jaguars face the Chiefs on Sunday in the top matchup of Week 5. Running back Leonard Fournette might not play for the Jaguars because of a hamstring injury. He already has missed 2½ games with the injury. “Worries about Fournette’s hammy,” Fox Sports’ John Czarnecki said. The New Orleans Saints also moved up a spot to No. 4 after beating the New York Giants 33-18 and will close out the week against another NFC East opponent when they host Washington on Monday night. “As Drew Brees closes in on the NFL record book, the Saints are rolling since that Week 1 shocker against Tampa Bay,” said Ira Kaufman of Fox 13 in Tampa, Florida. The Baltimore Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals, tied atop the AFC North at 3-1, both made major moves in the poll. Atlanta Falcons 37-36 on Andy Dalton’s TD pass to A.J. Green with 7 seconds remaining. The New England Patriots moved up three spots to No. 7 after pounding the AFC East rival Miami Dolphins 38-7. The Patriots (2-2) are the highest-ranked team with a .500 record. They will open Week 5 on Thursday night, when they host Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts. The AFC East-leading Dolphins (3-1) plummeted nine spots to No. 15 and are the lowest-ranked team with a winning record. The Chicago Bears moved up eight spots to No. 8 after dominating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 48-10 as Mitchell Trubisky threw six touchdown passes. The NFC North-leading Bears have a bye this week before facing Miami on October 14. “Not only are the Bears good now,” said Alex Marvez of The Sporting News. “The best is yet to come with Mitch Trubisky.” The Carolina Panthers, who are coming off their bye week, slipped two spots to No. 9. They will host the Giants on Sunday. The Tennessee Titans (3-1), who share first place in the AFC South with the Jaguars, jumped up five spots to round out the top 10.

Rogers caught eight passes for 85 yards and added a two-point conversion against Houston. Hilton could miss Thursday’s game at New England and Rogers could be ticketed for a significant role again. David Moore, Seattle (0.0): The Seahawks need to have playmakers step forward in their passing game, and Moore, who has flashed during the preseason, has downfield and big-play promise. He caught two passes for 39 yards last week at Arizona. Doug Baldwin is a health risk and Brandon Marshall is very obviously done and will have his snap counts reduced, so Moore may have to step forward and continue to make an impact. TIGHT ENDS Tyler Kroft, Cincinnati (0.4): The most obvious and possibly soughtafter add this week at a very thin and unreliable position, Kroft has already effectively replaced Tyler Eifert before, as he caught seven TD passes last year. Andy Dalton loves to look for his tight ends in the red zone, so be prepared to bid heavily in FAAB situations. Cameron Brate, Tampa Bay (10.6): Rising star O.J. Howard is expected to miss two to four weeks with a knee injury and Jameis Winston has been re-installed as Tampa Bay’s starting QB. Brate, who caught eight TD passes last year with Winston as the full-season starter, instantly becomes a TE1 candidate again. QUARTERBACK Jamies Winston, Tampa Bay (8.4): He has been confirmed as the starter when the Buccaneers return from the bye week, and with a need to throw often to a fine receiving group because of the lack of a defence and running game, game flow will frequently put Winston in high volume passing situations.

Misfiring Madrid stumbles again, Juventus wins without Ronaldo By STEVE DOUGLAS AP Sports Writer REAL Madrid is having trouble scoring with Cristiano Ronaldo no longer on the team. His new club, Juventus, did just fine without him yesterday. For the first time in more than a decade, Madrid has gone three straight games without a goal after losing 1-0 at CSKA Moscow in an early setback to the Spanish club’s title defence in the Champions League. Madrid is running into some problems in the post-Ronaldo era, having won only two of its last six games in all competitions. They arrived at Luzhniki stadium — where Spain lost to Russia in the last 16 of the World Cup — having also failed to score in its last two Spanish league games. Not since January 2007 has Madrid gone scoreless in three consecutive games. Ronaldo, who joined Juventus from Madrid in a deal worth 112 million euros ($131.5 million) this offseason, was missing for the Italian champions for their match against Young Boys after his sendingoff against Valencia in the opening round of group play. Paulo Dybala stepped up in the Portuguese star’s absence by scoring a hat trick in a 3-0 win to put Juventus top of its group. Another of Ronaldo’s former clubs is struggling, too. Manchester United’s bus got stuck in traffic — leading to a delayed kickoff against Valencia — and the team never got going on the field either in a dull 0-0 draw at Old Trafford. The stalemate comes after a week when United lost at home to second-tier opposition in an English League Cup game and to West Ham in the Premier League. CSKA’s winning goal against Madrid came after 65 seconds, but it wasn’t the quickest strike of the night. Hoffenheim scored even earlier — after 44 seconds, to be precise — against Manchester City, which fought back to win 2-1 and revive its Champions League challenge after opening with a loss.

NEW YORK (AP) — Patrick Reed blames Jordan Spieth for them not playing together at the Ryder Cup and told The New York Times that US captain Jim Furyk was not smart to sit him out twice. Europe won the Ryder Cup 17½-10½ at Le Golf National outside Paris. Europe now has won nine of the last 12 times, and it was the third time in its last five victories that it won by seven points or more. Spieth and Justin Thomas went 3-1, the only American tandem to play all four matches. Reed was paired with Tiger Woods in fourballs, losing both matches, and sitting out both foursomes matches. In an interview with the Times an hour after the closing news conference, Reed said he was fully expecting Furyk to pair him with Spieth again. “The issue’s obviously with Jordan not wanting to play with me,” Reed said. “I don’t have any issue with Jordan. NO. 1-ranked Simona Halep has a herniated disk in her back, putting the rest of her season in doubt. Halep wrote on Twitter yesterday that she had an MRI exam that revealed the injury. She retired from her firstround match at the China Open on Sunday, citing a back problem that has been bothering her. The season-ending WTA Finals begin in Singapore on October 21. Halep has lost her past four matches, including at the US Open. She became the first top-seeded woman to lose in the opening round in New York in the 50-year professional era. The Romanian, who turned 27 last week, is 46-10 with three titles in 2018. Halep won her first Grand Slam championship at the French Open in June, and was the runnerup at the Australian Open in January.

Dominant debut for No. 1 pick Ayton in Suns’ exhibition game By The Associated Press DEANDRE Ayton might be the NBA’s next great man in the middle. The No. 1 pick had a dominant debut Monday night, finishing with 24 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots in the Phoenix Suns’ 106-102 loss to the Sacramento Kings. The exhibition opener for both teams featured the top two picks in the most recent draft. Marvin Bagley III of Duke came off the Sacramento bench for seven points in 25 minutes. Ayton — Bagley’s onetime high school teammate — looks a little more NBAready. The former Arizona star leaped high for alleyoop and showed off a nice touch with a hook, finishing 9 for 16 from the floor and 6 of 8 from the free throw line. Joel Embiid, perhaps the league’s top current big man, matched up Monday with another top-10 centre from the draft, Orlando’s Mo Bamba. Embiid kept Philadelphia unbeaten with 21 points in the 76ers’ final game before they head to China for a pair of games against Dallas. KINGS 106, SUNS 102 Yogi Ferrell had 26 points on 9-of-14 shooting, including 6 of 9 from 3-point range, and Willie Cauley-Stein added 14 points and 12 rebounds for Sacramento.
