‘Buddy Buckets’ in position battle By RENALDO DORSETT Tribune Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net ne of the immediate takeaways from Sacramento Kings training camp has been the depth on the wing. With several players capable of playing the shooting guard spot, presumed incumbent starter Buddy Hield could find himself in a position battle over the course of the week-long camp and the preseason, according to Kings head coach Dave Joerger. Hield, seven-year veteran Garrett Temple, 20-year veteran Vince Carter and newcomer Bogdan Bogdanovic are all listed at the shooting guard spot. Minutes at the position are also expected to be shared between second-year wing Malachi Richardson, rookie Justin Jackson and veteran combo guard George Hill. “Bogdan, this is my first opportunity to see him so I’m looking forward to that. Obviously, I know what Garret can do, and then having Buddy for half of a season, there are three guys there competing for two spots there,” Joerger said. “Everybody goes out there and plays with a pure heart, gets better every day and we’ll figure it out from there. We also may want to slide George Hill over there and play some shooting guard, more so for De’ Aaron Fox to continue to develop.” Hield started 18 of 25 games last year since the midseason trade to the Kings. During his tenure he averaged 15.1 points,

Bahamians standouts on the European basketball circuit By RENALDO DORSETT Tribune Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net BAHAMIANS have tipped off in preseason tournaments on the European basketball circuit and have had immediate impacts with their respective clubs. Waltiea Rolle in the Turkish Women’s Basketball League and Juraun “Kino” Burrows in the French Basketball’s Pro B Division both posted standout performances. Just days after she signed with her new club, Rolle was named the game’s MVP on day two of the TKBL Federation Cup. She finished with 25 points, 15 rebounds and two blocked shots to lead Edremit Gure Belediyespor to a 69-65 win over Bayrakli Belediyespor. The TKBL is the top women’s basketball league in Turkey and will play its 37th season this year. The 6’6” centre and University of North Carolina product last played with Haskovo 2012 in the Bulgaria’s NBL league where she averaged 13.9 points and 12.3 rebounds per game in the 2016 season. In her previous season, she played with Nymburk, of the Czech Republic’s ZBL League in 2015, where she averaged 16.3 points and 10.4 rebounds in 31 games. In her first stint with Haskovo 2012 in 2014, she led the club in several statistical categories. Through 20 games and 27.3 minutes per game on the court, she shot .504 from the field and .783 from the three throw line for an average of 14.1 points per game. Rolle also averaged 9.2 rebounds and 1.95 blocks. Burrows helped FOS Provence Basket to an opening day win in the French Basketball’s Pro B Division’s Leaders Cup. He finished with 15 points and eight rebounds in a first-round win over Saint-Charmond. In the first phase of the Leaders Cup format, all 18 Pro B teams are divided into groups of three teams. After that teams play in a knock-out system with double legs in the quarter- and semi-finals.

Following a late-season stint and playoff run with FOS Provence Basket, Burrows agreed to a contract extension to return to the club this season. In 12 games last season, Burrows averaged 10.7 points, four rebounds and three assists in just over 25 minutes per game en route to the league’s semi-finals. Provence finished the regular season ranked No.2 in the league with a record of 22-12.

Those games are followed by a matchup with the Los Angeles Clippers October 12 and the preseason concludes October 13 against the defending champion Golden State Warriors. The Kings open the regular season Wednesday, October 18 against the Houston Rockets. “It’s not so much about the Xs and Os so much as it is about how we go about our business,” Joerger said. “What we do want to be about now? What do we want to be about four months from now? What do we want to be about three years from now? That needs to be the same so that there’s consistency.”

Freedom Farm is a non-profit baseball club geared at developing children’s baseball skills, as well as teaching them unity through teamwork. The things you do on the field today also helps you when you go inside the classroom. It makes you more of a team player in whatever you do. I just want to again encourage you to continue to do your best.” Mrs Ingraham also commended the coaches on the “great” job they are doing, as well as the parents and grandparents who continue to support the young men of Freedom Farm. Senior director at Freedom Farm, Clarence “CJ” McKenzie, said the Fall Ball season has four age divisions with all players going into new divisions. “In the 9-10 division, that division will be played with players who are 8 going in to the 9-10 division for the first time. So, the idea is to get their feet wet and give them the exposure because it will be the first time they will be playing at that level,” he said. “[The players] would have gained the confidence and essential fundamentals to compete in the upcoming season.” Freedom Farm’s Fall Ball season lasts for six weeks and ends with an awards ceremony. The games are open to the public free of charge. Games are held every Friday and Saturday.

It was ‘Poor Picks’ instead of Pro Picks in Week 3 By BARRY WILNER AP Pro Football Writer MAYBE all the displays of unity at NFL games last weekend also overshadowed an awful week for Pro Picks. We sure hope so: It was more like Poor Picks. And that came with a rare win in a Thursday night game, Rams over 49ers. Hopefully, we can get it right with this week’s opener, Bears at Packers, then follow it up with some more winners. Green Bay struggled to beat lowly Cincinnati in overtime last Sunday, hours after Chicago stunned Pittsburgh, also in OT. Working extra time heading into a short week isn’t exactly an ideal way to prep for a Thursday nighter. The Packers were undermanned, particularly on the offensive line, against the Bengals and had to stage a big rally to win. The Bears used their impressive running game to overcome the Steelers. With so little rest between outings, the disparity in talent can tend to get skewed a bit. Green Bay appears to be a Super Bowl contender when healthy. Chicago has the look of an also-ran in a tough division. Still, this is BearsPackers, one of the more emotion-packed series in pro sports. The Packers, No. 4 in the AP Pro32, are 7-point favourites over their longtime rival Bears (No. 25). PACKERS, 21-16

TRADITION & ATTRITION: BEARS, PACKERS SLOG IT OUT AT LAMBEAU By GENARO C. ARMAS Associated Press MILWAUKEE (AP) — Another week, another round of injuries for the Green Bay Packers. This week has been especially unkind for coach Mike McCarthy’s offensive line , with a short turnaround from an overtime game on Sunday to face the Chicago Bears on Thursday night at Lambeau Field. Don’t look for sympathy from Bears coach John Fox. He is already down three defensive starters less than a month into the season, and the Bears are also coming off an overtime win. “Nobody is going to come rescue us,” Fox said. “I think we’re playing a game Thursday night, so we’ll do our best to get ready for it.” The latest installment of the NFL’s oldest rivalry is a meeting between teams trying to make it to the long weekend off that follows a Thursday game without anyone else getting hurt.

By numbers alone, the Packers have had it worse, especially on the O-line. Tackles David Bakhtiari (hamstring) and Bryan Bulaga (ankle) are on the injury report again, listed as doubtful for Thursday. Kyle Murphy went on injured reserve this week, joining two other backup tackles knocked out by injuries. Ten players are on the injury report, not including two this week placed on injured reserve. The Packers do expect receiver Randall Cobb to return Thursday from a chest injury. “The No. 1 goal for our football team as far as preparing for this game is for everybody to get their bodies back,” McCarthy said. The Packers have a great equalizer in quarterback Aaron Rodgers. They’re never out of a game at home as long as he’s healthy, such as when Green Bay came back from a 14-point halftime deficit last week to beat the Bengals 27-24 in overtime.

FRISCO, Texas (AP) — The NFL is asking a federal appeals court to dismiss Ezekiel Elliott’s entire lawsuit in its bid to lift an injunction that blocked the star Dallas Cowboys running back’s six-game suspension over a domestic violence case in Ohio. The league wrote in a filing yesterday to the 5th US Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans that the players’ union case filed on behalf of Elliott had resulted in “hopelessly doomed proceedings.” The court requested arguments from both sides over US District Judge Amos Mazzant’s jurisdiction. The Texas judge granted Elliott’s request for an injunction while the case plays out in federal court. The NFL asked the appeals court for an emergency stay of Mazzant’s ruling, and oral arguments are set for Monday.

It’s official: Wade signs with the Cavaliers By TOM WITHERS Associated Press CLEVELAND (AP) — LeBron James can hardly contain his excitement. Neither can Dwyane Wade. Wade made it official on Wednesday, saying he has picked the Cleveland Cavaliers for a one-year, $2.3 million deal. It was finalised shortly after Wade cleared waivers, a necessary step following his buyout agreement struck with the Chicago Bulls over the weekend. “There’s no better place to be right now to continue to play and compete at the highest level,” Wade wrote in a statement posted on his social media accounts. “Cleveland believes in my talents and what I can bring to a championship contender both as a player and leader. I look forward to reuniting and playing alongside my brother LeBron. We’ve already won two championships together and I hope we get a third.”

James said he feels like a little kid having Wade with him again. “Come on, man, this is like one of my best friends,” James said yesterday following the first of two practices. Wade was set to join the Cavaliers at the second one. “It’s kind of like when you start school and you walk into the classroom and you’re not quite sure who your classmates are and when you walk in there and one of your best friends is in there, you’re like: ‘Oh, yeah, this is going to be fun. It’s going to be a good class.’ “That’s the type of feeling I got.” Wade, a 12-time All-Star and three-time NBA champion, chose Cleveland over Miami and Oklahoma City for a chance to win another title. He also listened to other clubs, including San Antonio. “I’ve always dreamed of playing for the Chicago Bulls and I feel so fortunate to have fulfilled my dream

The drama peaked at Atletico Madrid’s new stadium where Chelsea trailed at halftime and struck with the last kick to clinch a 2-1 victory. Major league batting leader Jose Altuve has a few more games to add to another 200-hit season. Verlander struck out 11 to win his fifth straight start since getting traded to Houston, Altuve reached 200 hits for the fourth season in a row, and the AL West champion Astros completed a dominating three-game sweep by routing the Texas Rangers 12-2 yesterday. “This is an important stretch for us. Muguruza advances to quarter-finals at Wuhan Open WUHAN, China (AP) — Top-ranked Garbine Muguruza advanced to the quarter-finals at the Wuhan Open, beating Magda Linette of Poland 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 yesterday. The Spaniard went up an early break in the thirdround match against No. 83 Linette and the Wimbledon champion needed just a half-hour to win the first set. Linette fought back in the second set, winning five straight games against topseeded Muguruza before play was stopped briefly to close the roof for rain. Muguruza managed to get one game on the board before Linette sent the match to a decider. “I know she is a very good player,” Muguruza said. “She had a very good moment in the second set but that didn’t disturb me to just keep going,” said Muguruza.
