edia day on Monday in Sacramento brought out both the funny and the serious side of Chavanno ‘Buddy’ Hield as he gets set for his sophomore year in the National Basketball Association and his first full season as a Kings shooting guard. The 23-year-old Grand Bahamian jokingly asked the reporters what they did and when one said he did a little of too much, he told him how he was disappointed that he didn’t get invited to the parties that the reporter hosted. “I party with everybody. Once the cameras are not around, I’m good,” Hield chuckled. “No cameras, no tape recorders around.” He then encouraged the reporters to come to his residence. He admitted to another reporter that he does “phone valet” because people are too sneaky. One reporter then turned to a more serious and sensitive issue as Hield was asked how his family here at home in the Bahamas was coping after the passing of Hurricane Irma. “I think the hurricane hit the lower parts of the island,” he said. “I still have to talk to my sister and my family and see what we can do. I didn’t hear back too much about the hurricane, but I know it hit the lower part of the island. So we’re going to see what I can do as a family to help them.” Reflecting on his days growing up in Grand Bahama, Hield said it was always scary when a storm was travelling. “As a kid, you never know how important the hurricane is because you only know there is no school,” he said. “But as you get older as an individual, you see that hurricanes are no joke. They put families through a lot of stress, people have to find food and children have no home, no roof over their heads, so it’s tough out there. I just hope those families can make a quick comeback and hopefully their jobs are not gone. Hopefully we can turn this around and get back on track.” After coming over from the New Orleans Pelicans as their

Now he’s in his first media day with the Kings and Hield said it’s certainly much better than when he started the journey last year. “I’m ready. I’m willing to learn more,” he stated. “I’m a guy who still doesn’t know it all, but I’m willing to learn, work hard, compete and have fun and do what I do best.” With the Kings not being mentioned as one of the top tier teams in the league this year, Hield said it gives them a better chance to show their stuff. “We just have to go out there and steal wins.” he said. “People have counted us out, but we just have to compete hard. Everybody is beatable in the west. I know the west is going to be hard. Everybody is adding star players, but they are all beatable teams. So we’re not worried about that. We just have to compete hard and have fun.” Not only is the league going to be hard, but Hield said it’s going

to be even harder for the Kings in training camp because all of the players, including himself, have to compete for their spot on the team. “You’re competing for a job. Guys are going to bring their all,” he projected. “Nothing comes easy in life. If it did, everybody would be doing it. So you want to compete hard and earn your spot. That’s why we’re here. Somebody has to win it and I plan to be that guy that wins a spot out there.” In preparation for the upcoming season, Hield said he has been working on every aspect of his game. “You work on everything during the offseason, not just one thing,” he said. “You work on everything.” For the past month, the 6-foot-4 Hield said he’s been in Sacramento working on his game after undergoing a busy summer in which he hosted a basketball camp in New Providence and Grand Bahama. Now he’s getting ready to make his contribution to the Kings, which has changed slightly during the offseason. “Everybody counts us as a young team but we still have a lot

of vets that can still play,” he said. “We have guys who can help to lead us into wins.” One of them is Vince Carter, the Kings’ biggest acquisition during the offseason. “He brings that leadership. He can help to mentor the guys,” Hield noted. “We’re going to pick his brain, how he’s taken care of his body for 20 years and stuff like that. Twenty years is amazing. He could be our dad out there if he wants to be. But I just want to learn from him. Whatever he says, you have to listen to him because he knows his stuff. He’s been in the league for 20 years. He has been through the ropes, he’s been to the wire so you just have to learn from him.” Like every youngster, Hield said he used to marvel at how efficient Carter was as a dunker, but he was even more impressed when he got to watch him display his offensive game. And even at age 40, Hield said they are looking to see what he does from training camp to the regular season. “He still has his legs, so I’m excited to play

alongside these guys and learn,” he stressed. “You want to compete and see how far they can test you and just get better.” Hield said he’s just good to be back in the Kings’ organisation and to see everybody as they try to improve on their 32-50 win-loss record that denied them a chance to play in the playoffs. “We’re experienced, but we still have a lot more to experience,” he said. “I’m going on my second year, so I have to learn a lot more. I don’t know it all. I’m trying to figure it out. I just have to continue competing hard. Once you compete, have fun, learn from the coaches, watch films and come ready for game night. When the ball goes up and you know that you give it your all, you will be fine.” While he didn’t try to beef up too much during the offseason, Hield said his main goal is to try and be as explosive as he can and keep his opponents right in front of him defensively and offensively. And, if he can get to the free throw line a little more to complement his shooting, he will be a much better player. Despite the fact that the top teams have been stacking up, Hield said they are looking forward to playing against the Oklahoma City Thunder, and even the Minnesota Timberwolves, who have all rebuilt their team. “It’s all about winning championships, so you can’t worry about them. You have to worry about yourself,” he pointed out. “If we lose or we win. we just have to keep it rolling.” Now that he has had a short sting with the Kings at the end of last year, Hield said he had a chance to learn the rules because everybody is a “copycat,” but they just call it something different. Whatever they call it in Sacramento, Hield said he’s prepared to help the Kings raise to another level this year. The Kings, coached by Dave Joerger, will play their first preseason game against the San Antonio Spurs on October 2. Their regular season opener will be at home against the Houston Rockets on Wednesday, October 18.

THE most valuable player (MVP) in the City Bowling League competition Monday night was Sonith Lockhart of the Carib Construction with a 628 high three game set. Lasheik Major, also of Carib Construction, was the runner-up with a 601 second high set. Ritchie Pyfrom of Giga Tech led in the high game department with 241 followed by Errol Morley with 238 second high game. Janice Hoyte of the Ten Back Strikers was the leader in the ladies’ category with a 593 high three game set. Camille Burnside of Telco Enterprises followed with a 210 second high game and a 578 second high set. Angie Smith of NUA Crusaders downed the pins for a super high game of 252. THE Nassau Street Hockey League (NSHL) is hitting the rink once again for their 17th season and they are looking for new and interested players to join in the action. The first pre-season game is scheduled for 7:30pm tonight at The Sand Trap on West Bay Street. It will be a pick-up game and is the first one of a series of tryouts. There are two more pick-up games set to go on October 4 and October 11. All of the pick-up games are free for players to try it out so people can get a sense of the game before committing. Jeff Pease, captain of the Nassau Sharks, has been playing with the league for four years and first started playing at one of the preseason pick-up games. “If you have never played hockey before, you should come out to one of the pick-up games and give it a try,” he said. The pick-up games are a fantastic way to meet a lot of the current league members from the four league teams: The Potter’s Cay Pirates, The Nassau Maple Reefs, The Hurricanes, and The Nassau Sharks. For these teams, the new draft picks will be scouted at the tryouts.

Once drafts are done, the teams will be set and the season begins. Pease said that this year is one he’s excited for because of all the new faces he expects to come out and play. “It’s a great way to meet new people,” he said. “I was new to the island four years ago and was able to make a lot of great friends through the league.” As the sport gains momentum in the Bahamas, the league maintains its solid community feel. “I love the league,” Pease added. “It’s a great way to break up the work week and have some beers and get good exercise. It keeps me in shape while also having a lot of fun.” It’s the fun of the sport that keeps players joining, and it keeps bringing them back every year. The games are fun, but they are physical. “While you don’t necessarily need hockey experience, you do need to have athletic ability,” Pease said. “While it is a fun league, it does get quite competitive.” However, there are always new players who do not have sports experience but just love the game. Showing up and playing every week is how to learn hockey and build up athleticism. Games run every Wednesday at The Sand Trap at 7:30pm and 8:45pm and all four teams play

each week. The first game of the regular season starts on Wednesday, October 18. This season will bring some excitement as each team will be fighting for the coveted championship title and the cup: The Stanley Conch. Last season, The Potter’s Cay Pirates took the champs, but this season brings fresh battles. The regular season runs from October to April, with bracketed rounds of playoffs following as teams battle to win The Stanley Conch. “I’m looking forward to another chance to win the [Stanley] Conch,” Pease said. Excitement has already begun and the NSHL

Aspiring martial artists take advantage of Elite Youth Training Seminar in Kansas EVERY year the Japan Karate Ryobu-Kai Kansas Dojo hosts its Elite Youth Training Seminar in Overland Park, Kansas. The New Providence Martial Arts Centre, represented by seven students and two instructors, travelled to Kansas to participate in this training seminar earlier this month. The students enjoyed interactive sessions with our Japan Karate-do Ryobu-Kai Kaicho, Kiyoshi Yamazaki (9th Dan), along with other international instructors - Sensei Minako Yamazaki and Sensei Howard High. As expected the programme was intense but very informative, says NPMAC chief instructutor Sensei Chinyere Ijeoma-Chukwuka. The students were eager to learn new katas and techniques but were reminded that the best karate-ka always goes back to the basics of perfecting techniques and not just memorising techniques. Participating students were: Chianna Diggiss, Charles Diggiss, Nkume Ijeoma, DeCarlo Delancy, Myles Worrell, Nathaniel Woodside, Chigozie Ijeoma.

indigenous martial arts styles from Trinidad and Tobago with a worldwide following.  He died on September 25 in Brooklyn, New York. He was seventy two years old. GM Wratton was special to the TTKF since 2010.

GLENDALE, Arizona (AP) — Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has been a staunch supporter of President Donald Trump, so the speculation was that he would not allow his players to kneel during the national anthem. The Cowboys and their owner did kneel, though not during the anthem. Following a weekend of kneeling and protesting across the NFL, the Cowboys and their owner displayed their own version of unity Monday night, kneeling on the field before rising as a group prior to the playing of the national anthem. “I hope that I’m clear and I hope that our team is clear: We want to

respect the flag. Make no mistake about that,” Jones said. “Nothing that we’ve done, nothing that we did tonight says anything other than that. We also want to as a complete team, as players and an organisation, be able to, whenever we can, demonstrate that unity is important and equality is important. “That’s what I’m so proud of these guys for, they did both and did it in a way when people really stop and think about it, makes a lot of sense.” The Cowboys sat and watched the protests across the NFL on Sunday and spent most of Monday discussing the best way to show unity without denigrating the flag. After warmups Monday night, they went into the locker room and returned to the field for the

anthem, lining up between the sideline and the yard markers on the field. Arm-in-arm, they dropped to a knee as a giant flag was carried onto the field, with Jones and his family in the middle near the 50-yard line. Numerous boos rang out across University of Phoenix Stadium as the Cowboys kneeled and continued as the players rose, still arm-in-arm, and stepped back to the sideline as the flag was unfurled across the field. They remained connected as Jordin Sparks sang the national anthem. “The objectives, as much as anything else, was to somehow, some way demonstrate unity and demonstrate equality, and do so without any way involving the

American flag and the national anthem,” Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said. The Arizona Cardinals had their own symbol of unity after a weekend of protests in the NFL, gathering along the goal line arm-in-arm during the national anthem. They were joined by owner Michael Bidwell, his family and general manager Steve Keim. More than 200 NFL players kneeled, sat or prayed during the national anthem on Sunday after President Trump said any player who does not stand for the national anthem should be fired. Three teams did not take the field for the national anthem and a number of NFL owners came out against President Trump’s statements.

PARK CITY, Utah (AP) — Should an American Olympian be at the centre of attention for the playing of the “The StarSpangled Banner” at the Pyeongchang Games next year, it would be for only one reason: He or she just won a gold medal. While NFL players have 16 or more chances to kneel, link arms or otherwise show signs of solidarity this season, an Olympic champion may get only one — a fact that complicates the question of whether to use that moment to make a statement. “For me, one of the proudest parts of being an American is the ability to have freedom of speech, and I look up to athletes who take a stand for what they believe in,” said Olympic champion skier Julia Mancuso, one of many US athletes who were asked Monday about President Donald Trump’s criticism of NFL players who kneel for the anthem. “As athletes who compete for Team USA, when it comes to the Olympics, I’d like to think it’s a special event.” John Carlos and Tommie Smith staged one of the most iconic protests in sports history, when they raised their fists during the medals ceremony at the 1968 Olympics. They were sent home immediately by the US Olympic Committee, which spent decades wrestling with how and whether the sprinters should be honored. The International Olympic Committee has rules against using the games for political statements, though Scott Blackmun of the US Olympic Committee said, “Our stance on this is fairly clear, and we recognise the rights of athletes to express themselves.” Whether they would, though, is a different matter.

Obviously he made some good plays, bigtime throws, but as much as anything else he’s got an amazing spirit and our players follow him.” The Cowboys (2-1), bouncing back from a 42-17 pummeling in Denver, began the game kneeling at midfield with owner Jerry Jones in a show of unity that followed widespread protests across the NFL of critical comments by President Donald Trump over the weekend. After they kneeled, they stood and walked to the sideline and stood for the anthem. “We planned and it was executed that we would go out and kneel,” Jones said, “and basically make the statement regarding the need for unity and the need for equality.” Prescott, 13 of 18 for 183 yards, broke a 14-14 tie with a 37-yard scoring pass to Brice Butler with 11:52 to play. “I immediately scrambled and when I scrambled Brice took the right angle and the right initiative going to the back of the end zone,” Prescott said. Arizona, with a spectacular catch by Larry Fitzgerald for 24 yards on a third-and-18 play, moved downfield but the drive stalled. Phil Dawson’s 37-yard field goal cut the lead to 21-17 with 6:35 left.

Ezekiel Elliott, who gained 8 yards on nine carries against Denver and drew criticism for not hustling after a couple of late interceptions, was bottled up much of the game, but still gained 80 yards on 22 attempts, 30 on one play. He ran 8 yards for the final Cowboys touchdown. The Cardinals (1-2), in their home opener, got a big game from Fitzgerald, who caught 13 passes for 149 yards, in the process moving ahead of Marvin Harrison into eighth in career receiving yards. The 13 receptions tied a career high. “That’s Fitz. It’s Monday night,” Arizona coach Bruce Arians said. “He’s a money player. It was a great performance by him. It’s a shame we couldn’t play better around him.” Carson Palmer had a big first half, completed 15 of 18 for 145 yards and finished 29 of 48 for 325 yards and two scores. He was sacked six times, a careerhigh three by DeMarcus Lawrence. The Cardinals dominated the first half statistically, but were deadlocked with the Cowboys at 7-7. Arizona had a 152-57 advantage in yards and dominated time of possession 19:34 to 9:41. Arizona took the opening kickoff and went 82 yards in eight plays. Palmer was 5-for-5 on the drive, capped by a 25-yard touchdown pass to Jaron Brown. Before Dallas even had a first down, Arizona mounted a nearly nine-minute drive but a touchdown pass to Brown was negated by a holding penalty and Phil Dawson’s 36-yard field goal try was wide right. It was the third mid-range

miss for the 41-year-old kicker this season. And the miss left the door open for the Cowboys to get back in it.

Lynx beat Sparks 70-68, even WNBA Finals 1-1 By JON KRAWCZYNSKI Associated Press MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Sylvia Fowles grabbed a WNBA Finals-record 17 rebounds and scored 13 points to lead the Minnesota Lynx to a 70-68 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks in Game 2 last night, evening the series at one game apiece. Fowles broke Taj McWilliams-Franklin’s record of 16 for Connecticut in 2005. Lindsay Whalen scored 14 points, Rebekkah Brunson had 12 and the Lynx held the defending champions to 38.7 per cent shooting while bouncing back from a last-second loss in Game 1. Candace Parker had 17 points, six assists and five rebounds for the Sparks, who had the ball and a chance to tie or take the lead with 13.1 seconds to play. But Chelsea Gray lost the handle on her dribble for a turnover, one of two big ones by Los Angeles in the final 14 seconds. Game 3 of the best-offive series is Friday night in Los Angeles. Gray scored 15 points and Nneka Ogwumike had

11 points and 13 rebounds for Los Angeles. Fowles, this season’s MVP, dominated the glass a game after the Lynx did not grab a single rebound in the first quarter of their series-opening loss. Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve torched her proud, veteran team on Monday after getting behind 28-2 in the first eight minutes on Sunday. She took little solace in watching them rally to a late lead, saying any pats on the back were from “Loserville.” The Lynx responded in a major way in Game 2, grabbing a 15-point lead in the first eight minutes. They held Ogwumike and Parker to a combined 0 for 11 in the first half and Los Angeles shot just 28 percent in the first two quarters. But just like the Lynx didn’t give up in Game 1, the Sparks wouldn’t go away this time. Parker capped an 11-3 run that cut Minnesota’s lead to three with 1:21 to play and Brunson was whistled for a questionable foul on Parker on the next possession. She converted both free throws to make

ANTHEM STATEMENT For the second straight game, the Sparks left the court just before “The Star Spangled Banner” started, a show of support for their NFL brethren who have come under withering criticism from President Donald Trump for using the national anthem as a vehicle to protest social injustice. The Sparks were booed heavily as they exited the court and again as they reappeared after the song was over. Ogwumike and Parker have said that the display is not meant to be derogatory toward the flag or American soldiers. AP SOURCE: CAVALIERS FRONT-RUNNERS TO SIGN DWYANE WADE By TIM REYNOLDS Associated Press BOCA RATON, Florida (AP) — Dwyane Wade and LeBron James are on the brink of becoming teammates again. James and the Cleveland Cavaliers are the clear front-runners to sign Wade once he becomes a free agent later this week, a person with knowledge of the situation. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity yesterday because no deals have been finalised. Wade cannot clear waivers until 5pm today, the time when his buyout by the Chicago Bulls will be completed. Sometime — presumably not very long — after that, the belief is Wade will announce that he has decided to reunite with his former Miami teammate and join the Cavaliers, according to the person who spoke with AP. James and Wade have been friends since entering the NBA together in 2003, and were teammates with the Heat for four seasons from 2010 through 2014.

Chris Paul and Blake Griffin were one of the most respected twosomes in the game. The Clippers won over 50 games each of the past five years. And now they are no more. With Paul’s contract up, the Clippers traded their nine-time All-Star to the Houston Rockets in the offseason. Now more than ever, the Clippers are Griffin’s team — a very different team with nine new players. “There will be times when Blake is the tallest guy on the floor,” coach Doc Rivers said. “We want him to be an aggressive player, an attack player. “He’ll bring the ball up at times. He’ll be one of the guys we use as a facilitator.” Griffin will be whatever the Clippers need at the moment. And that figures to be more than their leading scorer. “We’re going to be a different team,” Griffin said. “It’s just the nature of getting so many new guys, but that’s a good thing.
