Waltiea Rolle joins Turkish Women’s Basketball League By RENALDO DORSETT Tribune Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net WALTIEA Rolle’s pro basketball career will continue this season in Turkey. According to World Wide Hoop, Rolle has signed with Endremit Gurespor of the Turkish Women’s Basketball League (TKBL). The TKBL is the top women’s basketball league in Turkey and will play its 37th season this year. The 6’6” centre and University of North Carolina product last played with Haskovo 2012 in the Bulgaria’s NBL league where she averaged 13.9 points and 12.3 rebounds per game.

In her previous season she played with Nymburk, of the Czech Republic’s ZBL League in 2015, where she averaged 16.3 points and 10.4 rebounds in 31 games. In her first stint with Haskovo 2012 in 2014, she led the club in several statistical categories. Through 20 games and 27.3 minutes per game on the court, she shot .504 from the field and .783 from the three throw line for an average of 14.1 points per game. Rolle also averaged 9.2 rebounds and 1.95 blocks. Rolle told The Tribune of her offseason plans of a return to pro basketball in Europe, specifically in Turkey, which provided much more financial stability than

deal somewhere in Turkey where the contract is a lot better than where I was before.” She spent her offseason working on the holes in her game. “I just have to work on my speed. I need to get a lot faster,” Rolle said. “My post game wasn’t the best, but I hope that between October and November, I will be in shape to go overseas to play again.” Rolle, the first Bahamian to be drafted into the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), was a third-round pick (36th overall) by the Minnesota Lynx in the 2013 WNBA Draft. She appeared in all three preseason games with the team, averaging 7.0 points, 4.3 rebounds

and 1.0 steals per game. After completing training camp and the preseason with Minnesota, Rolle was waived just prior to the tip-off of the 2014 WNBA season. Her WNBA journey ended in May 2015 when she was waived by the Seattle Storm. In six games with the Storm in 2014, Rolle averaged 3.2 points and 2.8 rebounds per game. “I know what I have to do in order to get back there [to the WNBA],” she said. “I’m not going to rush anything. I just want to make sure that I am in the best condition to play at that level gain because when I go back, I want to make an impact. Everything

ameron Roach, using his past experience as one of the Bahamas’ top swimmers, surged to the front of the pack and held on for the victory in the sprint segment of the fifth Powerade Potcakeman Triathlon. Beating out Simon Lowe in the 750-metre swim, 13-mile bike and three-mile run on a course around Jaws Beach, Roach was followed by a host of other winners, including Julia Salas, the female winner and Jorge Marcos Aballi and Anna Zywiolek, the male and female champions of the Olympic segment of the 1,500m swim, 26-mile bike and six-mile run. Roach also got to watch as his nephew Noah Roach and his daughter Kami Roach emerged as the winners of the boys’ and girls’ 10-12 age group respectively. Sarah Kennedy, who teamed up with Roach and a few others to form a committee for the event, said it has been five wonderful years that they have seen the event grow by leaps and bounds. “We have grown each year both through the number of participants and supporters. What a great turnout today,” she said. “This year’s races were particularly competitive and extremely exciting as we had the fastest athletes spread over both distances. We are also really proud as always of those people competing in their first triathlon and we hope they get the bug and come back again next year.” Powerade was this year’s presenting sponsor and they were joined by Subway, Purina Dog Chow, Albany, Think

No charity performance from Roach While this was a battle for the Bahamian bragging rights, Roach was able to build a comfortable lead coming out of the water (10:58) compared to Lowe’s (12:40). But as they progressed, Lowe closed the gap on the bike (36:16-36:48) on Roach and made it an exciting finish in the run (21:49-22:40). However, Roach was able to hold in the end for the win in 1:11.22 with Lowe trailing in 1:11.56. Mark Dietrich had to settle for third in 1:12.29. “I had a really good swim, coming out strong. I was able to hold my lead coming out of the bike ride, but the run was very challenging with the trail and the hills,” Roach said. “I did cramp up a little, but I was able to hold and defend my title. I think Simon Lowe and Mark Dietrich gave each other a good push. There were a couple guys in the Olympic run who were also there. I hope one day we can all come together and do the same distance.” But the 38-year-old Roach said until they do, he will enjoy his back-toback sprint title. MIKE Strachan reached the stat sheet for the first time in his collegiate career. Strachan caught the first reception of his career for the University of Charleston Golden Eagles in the team’s 19-16 loss to Fairmont State Fighting Falcons. Strachan, the 6ft 5in 205lb pound wide receiver was a redshirt in his true freshman and saw his first playing time of his collegiate career this year. The Golden Eagles fell to 1-3 on the year. Strachan entered college as a three-sport athlete who will also run track for the Golden Eagles. He joined Charleston after a standout career for coach Chris Rocco at LCA. Strachan was a member of the 2013 VISAA 1 State Championship team, and received All Conference and Honourable Mention All-Region this year as a senior. Strachan is also ranked fourth nationally in the 500m, set a new LCA record in the event at the Hokie Invitational and will run track for UC as well. The Golden Eagles football programme is coming off a season where they finished with a 3-8 overall record, and a 3-7 mark in Mountain East play. In the previous year they made the first ever trip to the NCAA Division II Playoffs under head coach Pat Kirkland. Kirkland enters his seventh season overall and over the past three seasons has led UC to an overall 21-11 winloss record and a top-15 national ranking.

Emily Morley in action today at World Rowing Championships EMILY Morley, 23, the first Bahamian to row in an Olympic regatta and president of the Nassau Rowing Club, will set the standard for Bahamian rowing once again as the first Bahamian to race at the World Rowing Championships. The big event began yesterday in Sarasota, Florida, and Morley’s first race is all set for today. She will race in the Women’s Single Scull event, the same event in which she competed at the Olympics with athletes from 20 other countries. Also competing is Felice Chow from Trinidad & Tobago, the only other Caribbean nation represented. Chow and Morley have raced each other before at the

FISA Americas Olympic Qualification Regatta, held in Santiago, Chile. “I am so honoured to be able to represent the Bahamas again,” says Morley as she reflects on her rowing career which has spanned eight years. “It’s exciting to be competing again, but I am more excited to see the up and coming Bahamian rowers who are coming through the elite training pipeline. I am humbled to be a role model to Bahamian rowers – especially the female rowers - and I hope some of them follow in my footsteps as they progress into more competitive programmes to fill out our elite squad in a few years. Becky Robinson will accompany Morley as her coach.

Robinson previously coached Morley for four years as head coach of the Ithaca College women’s rowing team, who saw three NCAA appearances under Morley’s collegiate rowing career. She was also the Bahamas team coach in Rio. Robinson is excited to coach again at the international elite level, saying: “It’s great to have a Bahamian and Ithaca graduate doing great things in rowing. She joins Meghan Musnicki as another elite rower who has come through the programme and continues to do great things.” While the top of the highly competitive field are expected to come from European and Canadian programmes, Morley aims

to row the best race she can. As she looks forward to being back in competition, she said: “Just being back in the elite rowing world is very exciting. It will be a lot of fun competing with the world’s top athletes again,” she said. “The founders of the Nassau Rowing Club aimed to build a pipeline and training structure to prepare top Bahamian athletes to compete at the international elite level. Katrina Montgomery was third in 1:28.32. “I just love this event. I look forward to it every year,” said the Canadian by birth who now resides here with her husband for the past 15 years operating a number of businesses. “The competition was good. The girls were strong. The guys were stronger.” Cuban cigar for Aballi In what was regarded as the most difficult segment of the event, Aballi proved that the third time was the charm as he was the best man on the day, taking the Olympic male title to Cuba with his time of 2:18.12. Except for the run, Aballi had the best time of all of the top competitors as he out-lasted Simone Bertoldo (2:24.45) and Gustavo Mery (2:28.48), who had the fastest time in the run. “This year, I had my bike and it’s my first time doing the Olympic segment,” Aballi said. “I’ve been working on it and I have been training really hard. “Sometimes I don’t get to train as hard as I want because of work, but I am glad that I was able to pull it off. I didn’t get the time I wanted, but I feel as if I train a little harder, I can get it. But I feel very good about my performance.”

No comparison for Zywiolek As the lone female competitor entered in the longer version of the event, Zywiolek had to compete against the clock and her male counterparts. The 37-year-old Poland native who now resides in the Bahamas had a time of 2:38.29. “I didn’t have to race and chase anybody,” Zywiolek said. “I was nice and steady out there. I just finished the Half Marathon Triathlon in Chattanooga, Tennessee with Julie Salas, so that helped me out tremendously. “The organisers here are doing an excellent job and think it’s getting better. For me it’s more a fun event, but I hope to be back next year.” Noah reigns supreme After falling short in his first two outings, Noah Roach made sure that this one wasn’t going to slip away from him too as he crossed the line in 22.23 in the Puppy Tri 200m swim, 5k bike and 1k run over Quinn Hewison (23.04) and Benjamin Dupuch (23.24). “I think it was good. I went out there and I did my best,” said the 12-year-old Roach, son of former swimmer Dorian Roach and nephew of Cameron Roach. “I really wanted this one and I got it.” Sweep for Roach Kami Roach added another title for her family as she out-distanced her rivals to take the girls 10-12 division in 25.34. Isabelle Zatarain was second in 28.29 and Mikayla Blacquiere got third in 29.16. “It was much better than last year,” said 11-year-old Roach, who regained the crown she relinquished last year. “I did much better in the run this year.” Future stars shine Alexander Heinzl won the boys’ 1-9 Splash N Dash 100m swim and 1k run in 7:23. Patrick Tordion was second in 8:25 and Luke Kennedy was third in 8:34. Yasmin Kennedy was the girls’ winner in 8:24 with Erin Pritchard second in 8:32 and Emily Dupuch third in 9:00.

Gray’s jumper helps Sparks avoid collapse in WNBA Finals Game 1 By JON KRAWCZYNSKI Associated Press MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Chelsea Gray got a sliver of daylight and let a 14-foot jumper fly — Game 1 of the WNBA Finals and what would have been a dubious piece of history for the Los Angeles Sparks hanging in the balance. When it splashed through there may have been a few sighs of relief sprinkled in among those celebratory high fives. Gray’s pull-up jumper with 2 seconds delivered an 85-84 victory yesterday over the Minnesota Lynx in the kind of edge-of-yourseat finish that no one saw coming when the Sparks led 28-2 in the first quarter. “I think all athletes dream of that moment,” Gray said. “I think you dream of hitting that shot. ... I’m glad it went in.” Gray scored a careerhigh 27 points and Candace Parker added 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Sparks, who joined their NFL brethren by sitting out the national anthem. The Sparks led 28-2 in the first quarter and 78-66 with five minutes to play, but gave it all back after a charge from the Lynx. Maya Moore scored 27 points and Sylvia Fowles had 22 points and 13 rebounds for the Lynx, who roared back from that 26-point hole to take an 84-83 lead with 6.5 seconds to play. A victory would have been the largest playoff comeback in WNBA history, but Minnesota could not get one last stop. “I know everyone is going to talk about what a great comeback it was, but that’s not the world we live in,” Lynx coach Cheryl

Ogwumike said. “They are going to punch back and we have to be able to respond to that better.” Moore’s dash to the bucket put the Lynx in front with 6.5 seconds to play, but that was plenty of time for Gray. She used an escape dribble to create a little daylight, and her higharching jumper splashed through. Odyssey Sims scored 16 points and Ogwumike had 11 points and six rebounds for Los Angeles. Augustus finished with 19 points, eight rebounds and four assists for Minnesota. “We gave ourselves a chance to win the game, but there’s no question that the championship isn’t going to be won with that kind of stretch that we allowed in that first quarter,” Moore said.

entire 2013 WNBA season in favour of completing her degree in sports administration and exercise sports science at the University of North Carolina, and playing overseas. She made Bahamian basketball history by becoming the first Bahamian to play in the WNBA when she appeared in the Storm’s 80-74 loss to the Tulsa Shock on July 29, 2014. She signed her first sevenday contract with the Storm on July 21, dressing for all three of Seattle’s games from July 22-26, but did not receive playing time during

the three games in that time span. During the second contract, she received spot duty in three consecutive contests when she scored two points in each outing. She ended the season with five rebounds in a 78-65 loss to the Phoenix Mercury A 2013 graduate of North Carolina, Rolle owns two of the top 10 best shotblocking seasons in school history. Her 89 blocks during the 2013 campaign stands as the sixth best of all-time and her 82 blocks in the 2011 season eighth in North Carolina history.

Martinez’s clutch hit secures top wild card for Diamondbacks By BOB BAUM Associated Press PHOENIX (AP) — Of course it was J.D. Martinez who got the hit that secured home-field advantage in the wild-card game for the Arizona Diamondbacks. He’s been getting big hit after big hit ever since coming over from Detroit before the July 31 trade deadline. But, as he pointed out, the quest for a championship is only just beginning for the Diamondbacks. “This isn’t it,” Martinez said. “They only get bigger from here. In my opinion we are not in the playoffs yet. If we win that wild card then we are in it.” Martinez lined a two-out RBI single to deep left field with the bases loaded in the ninth inning, and Arizona beat the Miami Marlins 3-2 yesterday to clinch the top wild card in the National League. “J.D.’s been unbelievable,” first-year manager Torey Lovullo said. “How fitting that the guy you pick up in a big midseason push gets the big hit today. (AP) — Josh McCown threw a 69-yard touchdown pass to Robby Anderson, Bilal Powell ran for a score, and the New York Jets’ defence dominated Jay Cutler and the Miami Dolphins in a 20-6 victory yesterday. While a lot of the focus heading into the season was on whether the revamped Jets roster would be good enough to win any games, New York made Miami look like the team in the middle of a rebuild. McCown finished 18 of 23 for 249 yards, Chandler Catanzaro kicked two field goals, and the Jets (1-2) forced Cutler and the Dolphins (1-1) into mistakes all game. Stafford threw a slant to Tate and a video review determined he was down just inside the 1 with 8 seconds left. By rule, 10 seconds had to run off the clock, and that ended the game because the Lions didn’t have any timeouts. (AP) — Drew Brees shredded the league’s top-ranked defense, throwing for three touchdowns and 220 yards. Wozniacki beats Pavlyuchenkova to retain Pan Pacific title TOKYO (AP) — Caroline Wozniacki overwhelmed Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-0, 7-5 to retain her Pan Pacific Open title yesterday. The victory gives Wozniacki, also champion in Tokyo in 2010, her first title of the year. The Dane had lost all six of her previous finals in 2017. “This was my seventh final of the year — it gets harder to get that last win,” said world No. 6 Wozniacki, who has now won at least one title every year since 2008. “I’ve been putting myself in a position to win all year. It was really important for me to stay focused and positive.” Wozniacki had crushed world No.1 Garbine Muguruza 6-2, 6-0 in the semi-finals and a similar score looked on the cards here Sunday. “The court suits my game. METZ, France (AP) — Qualifier Peter Gojowczyk won his maiden ATP title at the Moselle Open in his first final, defeating seventh-seeded Benoit Paire 7-5, 6-2 yesterday. The last qualifier to win a title on the main tour was Frenchman Nicolas Mahut at ‘s-Hertogenbosch in 2015. The 95th-ranked Gojowczyk faced 12 aces from his French rival but put on a solid display on his own serve. He did not face a single break point and broke Paire three times to win the indoor tournament. Gojowczyk is now set to rise to a career-high ranking of No. 66. Paire, who had snapped an eight-match semi-final losing run on Saturday, was chasing a second title after claiming his maiden trophy in Bastad two years ago.
