The Tiger roars! By DOUG FERGUSON AP Golf Writer ATLANTA (AP) — A comeback not even Tiger Woods saw coming a year ago. A chaotic celebration that golf hasn’t seen even in the best of times. Woods delivered the perfect ending to his amazing return from four back surgeries yesterday with a performance that felt like the old days. He left the competition feeling hopeless as he built a five-shot lead early and hung on to win the Tour Championship. Woods raised both arms over his head after he tapped in for par and a 1-over 71 for a two-shot victory over Billy Horschel, the 80th victory of his PGA Tour career and his first in more than five years. “It was a grind out there,” Woods said. “I loved every bit of it.” It felt like a coronation coming down the 18th green after he hit his second shot to the par 5 safely in a bunker in front of the green. The crowd came through the ropes and walked behind him, just like that walk from the left side of the 18th fairway when he won the Masters in 1997, and when the enormous gallery of Chicago followed after him when he won the Western Open that summer. They chased after any inch of grass they could find to watch the ending. This felt just as big as a major, maybe better considering where Woods had been. “I didn’t want to get run over,” Woods said with a laugh. Only when he was on the green, the last one to putt after Rory McIlroy tapped in for birdie, did it start to sink in. “All of a sudden it hit me that I was going to win the tournament. I started tearing up a little bit,” Woods said. “I can’t believe I pulled this off.” He paused as his voice started to crack. More roars. Several players, from Zach Johnson to Rickie Fowler to Horschel, waited to greet him. It was

Hield and the Sacramento Kings will host Media Day today and will tip-off camp tomorrow at the team’s downtown practice facility at Golden 1 Center. Training camp will continue through Sunday, September 30. Ayton and the Phoenix Suns will host training camp September 25-29 at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. The Suns’ week of camp will conclude with an open practice that will be held at Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix at noon on Saturday, September 29. This will be the sixth-straight

THE next step on the pro basketball journey for Michael Carey Jr will take him to the top league in Mexico. Carey reached an agreement with the Huracanes de Tampico of Mexico’s premier basketball league, Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional. He comes off a strong summer with the Bahamian national team when he averaged 16 points, 5.5 assists and four rebounds in the third window of the FIBA World Cup Qualifier. AS long as they continue hitting the ball, centre fielder Tyrice Curry said there’s no reason why her Sunshine Auto Wildcats should not be able to wrap up their defence of the New Providence Softball Association ladies’ championship crown on Tuesday night. Coming off their 27-6 massacre on Thursday night, Sunshine Auto secured a 17-5 rout on Saturday night in the Banker’s Field at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex to snatch a commanding 3-1 lead over the Lady Truckers in game four of the best-ofseven championship series. “We’re playing as a championship team. On Tuesday, we just have to put it together and make sure the bats keep coming around and don’t give up,” said Curry, who made her contribution in the game as

BAHAMAS EARNS ‘BEST TEAM TROPHY’ AT OCEAN STATE JUDO CHAMPIONSHIPS LED by Jasmine Russell, the Bahamian national team competed this weekend at the annual Ocean State Judo Championships, held in Providence, Rhode Island, bringing home the coveted best team trophy. The Ocean State is one of the USA’s best tournaments on their local circuit. It brings together competitors from the entire New England area as well as international competitors from Europe. “Overall, the team did fantastic,” said Oneysi Pons, head coach of the national team. “The competition here is tough, and while everyone on the team didn’t win medals, nearly all of them took matches and were competing for medals. We have some things to work on, but we are right where we need to be to have success at the Jr World Championships.” In judo, because there are two third places, the losers of the bronze medal matches are awarded 5th place. “It is time to support this team,” says D’Arcy Rahming Jr, High Performance director of the national team. “The championships are upon us and the athletes

have trained hard and the results are showing. “But they need the support to carry them over the edge,” he added. “We have never had a team this good and this well-prepared.” The World Juniors is scheduled to be held in Nassau October 17-21. Over 70 countries from five continents and 650 athletes, coaches and delegates have confirmed attendance, making it the largest sport tournament ever held in the Bahamas in terms of numbers and diversity of countries. Hield and Ayton will have their first head-tohead game in the NBA when the Suns host the Kings at Talking Stick Resort and Arena in Phoenix, Arizona, on October 1. The Suns will play a fivegame preseason schedule which tips off with three home games and concludes with two road contests. Following the game against the Kings, the Suns will face the New Zealand Breakers of Australia’s National Basketball League on Wednesday, October 3 and the Portland Trail Blazers on Friday, October 5. The Suns’ matchup against New Zealand marks the second consecutive year the club has hosted a team from the NBL, defeating the Brisbane Bullets 114-93 during the 2017 preseason. The road slate is highlighted by a matchup against the defending NBA champions Golden State Warriors on Monday, October 8. For the Kings, they follow the matchup against the Suns with a back-toback set at Los Angeles on Thursday, October 4 and in Seattle versus Golden State on Friday, October 5. The Kings return to the Golden One Center in Sacramento for its preseason home opener versus Maccabi Haifa on Monday, October 8. It will be the third tie in four seasons they are set to face the Israeli powerhouse. The Kings round out their home exhibition schedule when they host the Utah Jazz Thursday, October 11 and concludes with a matchup against the Portland Trailblazers on Friday, October 12. Hield and Ayton will face each other four times over the course of the regular season as Pacific Division rivals in the Western Conference. The Suns will host the first of the four meetings against the Sacramento Kings on December 4 at Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix, Arizona. The Suns will also host game two on January 8. The venue shifts for game three when Hield and the Kings host the Suns on February 10 at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, California. The final regular season meeting between the teams takes place on March 23 in Sacramento.

Carey’s first pro assignment came last season with Soles de Santo Domingo of the Liga Nacional de Baloncesto (LNB) in the Dominican Republic. Through 13 games, the 6’5” guard averaged 12.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. He completed his two-year career at Wagner University with a number of accolades for his numbers in the senior season.

PLISKOVA BEATS OSAKA ON HOME SOIL TO WIN PAN PACIFIC OPEN By JIM ARMSTRONG AP Sports Writer TOKYO (AP) — Fourthseeded Karolina Pliskova beat Naomi Osaka 6-4, 6-4 yesterday to win the Pan Pacific Open and deny the US Open champion a win in her home country. Osaka, who upset Serena Williams in the final in New York, hadn’t dropped a set previous to Sunday’s final and was frustrated from the outset by the big-serving Czech player. Pliskova broke Osaka for a second time to go up 5-4 in the second set and then hammered her sixth ace to secure her 11th career title. Pliskova needed three dramatic sets in each of her matches to reach her

second final of the season. “I was just happy it didn’t go to a third set,” Pliskova said. “Naomi was playing so good all tournament but I think she was a little bit tired today.” The frustration was evident when Osaka double faulted in the ninth game of the second set to set up Pliskova’s second break. The 20-year-old tossed her racket to the ground before collecting her composure, but it was too late. It was the second time Osaka came up short in the tournament. Trick plays help unbeaten Dolphins stop Raiders 28-20 By STEVEN WINE AP Sports Writer MIAMI GARDENS, Florida (AP) — The Miami Dolphins had just tricked the Oakland Raiders one final time, and as Albert Wilson and Jakeem Grant sprinted side by side in the clear the final 30 yards toward the end zone for a clinching touchdown, they didn’t wait to celebrate. While still on the run, the two Miami receivers exchanged a gleeful high-five. “Just NASCAR on grass,” Grant said. The Dolphins looked even faster than that. Wilson threw a 52-yard touchdown pass to put unbeaten Miami ahead midway through the fourth quarter, and then turned a short reception into a 74-yard score that sealed a 28-20 victory yesterday over winless Oakland. Miami coach Adam Gase used creative playcalling to overcome a wave of injuries and penalties, and a 17-minute deficit in time of possession. The Dolphins scored on a pair of shovel passes by Ryan Tannehill that each travelled less than a yard — one on the flip to Wilson, and an earlier similar pass that Grant caught before turning the corner for an 18-yard score. “We made some big plays when it mattered,” Tannehill said. “With the explosiveness we have, we just have to keep doing our job and not press.” Thanks to all the flashy plays, the surprising Dolphins are 3-0 for only the third time since 1998, with an early season showdown at AFC East rival New

SINGAPORE (AP) — Lewis Hamilton sounds unsure of just one thing: whether Ferrari can bounce back after he dealt another crushing blow to Sebastian Vettel’s title hopes. Hamilton was imperious at the Singapore Grand Prix, securing one of the best pole positions of his Formula One career with an astonishing drive in qualifying on Saturday and then controlling yesterday’s race perfectly. It all went so smoothly for Mercedes as Hamilton moved 40 points ahead of Vettel with six races left in the season. But for Ferrari, it was yet another weekend on the back foot. “We’re not over-confident, we’re diligent. We just want to keep hammering as hard as we can,” Hamilton after Sunday’s win, still sounding elated long after his victory. “If (Ferrari) have got an answer to that, we don’t mind that, we like that battle. If they don’t, we also don’t mind that.” These are big “Ifs” for a Ferrari team lurching into crisis after a strong start — as Vettel won the first two races and four of the first 10. He tapped in for par, and another stampede ensued to line the third fairway. On and on it went. No one wanted to miss a shot. A year ago, there was no guarantee anyone would see much of Woods, much less Woods winning. He’s back again. This victory, his first since the Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone in August 2013 — 1,876 days, to be exact — brought him to No. 13 in the world. Not bad for a 42-year-old with four back surgeries who returned to competition in December at No. 1,199. The next stop for Woods is to board a plane with the rest of his US teammates for France and the Ryder Cup.
