PICKING UP THE PIECES By Mike Lightbourn

ON September 12, the Elbow Reef Lighthouse, aka the Hope Town Lighthouse, lit up in the face of disaster. It was the first time the red and white-striped lighthouse was illuminated since Hurricane Dorian started its deadly assault on Abaco on September 1. Built in 1862, this priceless landmark stands at 89 feet and is one of only a few manually operated lighthouses left in the world. Its weight mechanism must be hand cranked every few hours to maintain a sequence of five white flashes every 15 seconds. The light passes through the optics of a first order Fresnel lens which floats on a bed of mercury. After Dorian, an electric light bulb was used instead of kerosene. A careful evaluation is needed before the mechanism can be hand wound again. In sharing a photograph of the shining beacon after Dorian, members of the Elbow Reef Lighthouse Society summed up the spirit of courage and determination of the Abaco people. Kudos to the Society for bringing hope to the people. And a Ferry’s Running Albury’s Ferry Service, which links the cays to the mainland, already has one boat back in operation for relief efforts. While Dorian has battered Albury’s – it tragically lost two team members in the storm – the business is looking at all options so it can “swiftly and safely” get back to serving the Abaco community. “Hurricane Dorian has caused so much destruction, but she DID NOT break our spirit- and we WILL be back stronger than ever!” the company said. From Green Turtle Cay The postcard pretty Green Turtle Cay also suffered immeasurable

damage, but the strong spirit of resilience echoes from there as well. “All material things are vanity. We thank God for life. …Everyone on Green Turtle Cay suffered great loss but we are strong and we will rebuild,” is the message. And throughout the various decimated communities, we hear the voices of hope and bravery from these sons and daughters of Abaco. They are joined by newcomers and friends from abroad. The Forgotten ‘Cane of ‘29 I find it useful to look back on the past to give us hope for the future. Very few Bahamians are alive to recall the catastrophic Hurricane of 1929 that almost wiped out New Providence. The September storm lasted for three days, remaining almost stationary over New Providence and Andros. It moved at a mere two miles per hour. It devastated the Northwest Bahamas and impacted the economy for years, striking during the peak of the sponging era. With no advance warning system in place, many sponge fishermen were caught at sea and perished in the massive category four hurricane. Sponging was the number one industry at the time. The storm killed 134 people and more than 5,000 were left homeless in New Providence, according to the Department of Archives. The population of the island at the time was only about 13,000. “On this island, 456 houses were destroyed and 640 were badly damaged. Approximately 73% of all the homes and businesses in Nassau were destroyed…” the department says. Today, New Providence is a bustling island with more homes and churches than you can “shake a stick at.” Building codes were implemented shortly after the powerful Hurricane of ’29. Following a few more destructive hurricanes,
