Jones set to play basketball in southeastern Europe By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net lthough they’ve been trying for the past two years to convince her to change her mind, Women’s National Basketball Association player Jonquel Jones has switched allegiance from the Bahamas and will now be playing basketball on the international scene for Bosnia and Herzegovina. Bahamas Basketball Federation’s first vice president Mario Bowleg confirmed that after exhausting all avenues to keep Jones in a Bahamian uniform, they granted her release to play for the country on the Balkan

Peninsula in southeastern Europe. The 24-year-old Grand Bahamian native, who recently completed her second season with the Connecticut Sun in the WNBA, will now play with a European passport in a move that will also enable her to gain more money than she would earn as a Bahamian. “We tried to stall the time and talk to her and let her know that we would do whatever we can, along with talking to the Bahamas Government, to get her to change her mind,” Bowleg said. “In recent weeks, she came back and told us that her mind was made up and she still wanted to do this because it was all about her ensuring that she was

JONQUEL JONES able to make the maximum amount of earning that she could through playing the game of basketball all around the world.”

The more financial European League has been known to compensate their players a lot more than they would get in the WNBA. As a player with a European passport, Jones now stands to make at least 10 times more playing in the European League than she would make with a Bahamian passport. “It was a financial decision for her,” Bowleg said. “The European countries know that and so they have been enticing the players to come and play and represent their country. “It’s not a choice that she just wanted to go and play for them and not for the Bahamas. It’s a financial decision that she made that will be more beneficial for her and her family.”

Even though they tried to convince her to stay with the Bahamas, including placing her on the elite subvention programme offered by the government to earn about $34,000 a year, Bowleg said it’s no match for the type of salary she could secure with a European passport. At 6-feet, 6-inches, Jones has blossomed into one of the top players in the WNBA since she got drafted in the first round with the sixth pick overall in 2016. As the second Bahamian to play in the WNBA, coming out of Clemson and George Washington universities, Jones had her breakout season in 2017 in her starting role. She went on to make the WNBA All-Star game

Wildcats snatch 2-1 lead By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net CAPITALISING on a 16-run third inning, the defending champions Sunshine Auto Wildcats went on an offensive tear as they routed the Johnson’s Lady Truckers 27-6 to snatch a 2-1 lead in their New Providence Softball Association’s best-of-seven ladies’ championship series in the Banker’s Field at the Baillou Hills Sporting complex on Thursday night. The sad part about is that the Lady Truckers had to tote the load for seven innings as the Lady Wildcats were not able to stop the game by the mercy rule. In fact, Sunshine Auto’s winning pitcher Thela Johnson said they had that in store for Johnson’s after they predicted that they were going to sweep them. “Words can’t explain. We would have been up 3-0 if we had hit the ball in game two,” said Johnson as they bounced back from a 6-1 loss on Tuesday night. “I guess tonight was pretty awesome. I can’t explain how happy I am with my team. I told them to bring their bats and they brought their bats along with some lumber.” She said the Lady Truckers can take this as a warning because “ain’t no stopping them now.” “This is more than a statement,” she stated. “They say they want to back-door sweep, but you can’t back-door sweep us. This the ‘Cats. The ‘Cats are going all the way.” Johnson, batting fifth in the line-up, proved her point as she helped her own cause by going 2-for-3 with

where she achieved her first professional career slam dunk. She finished the second averaging a double-double in points and rebounds and also averaged career-highs in scoring, rebounding and block shots. As a footnote to her success, Jones went on to break the single season rebounding record of 398 - previously held by Tina Charles and Sylvia Fowles with a total of 403. For her accomplishment, Jones was named the WNBA Most Improved Player. The only thing she didn’t do last year was get the Sun into the WNBA final after they got eliminated by the Phoenix Mercury in the playoffs.

MIAMI (AP) — Jimmy Butler knows that NBA players can force their way into trades. Forcing their way into a trade that suits the player, that’s an entirely different story. Butler has told the Minnesota Timberwolves that he has no intentions of resigning with the club next summer, his way of saying “trade me now” or “lose me for nothing later.” The Athletic first reported Butler’s decision. It’s a power move that players can make. Thing is, it comes with risk — because what happens next is not up to Butler. This was the lesson learned from the Kawhi Leonard situation, from the Kyrie Irving situation, from the Paul George situation. Leonard supposedly was hoping for a trade from San Antonio to the Los Angeles Clippers. Irving wanted to be sent by Cleveland to either San Antonio and Miami. George was widely assumed to leave Indiana for the Los Angeles Lakers. Leonard is in Toronto, at least for one season. Irving got sent to Boston, and is a free agent next summer. George landed in Oklahoma City, and probably will be there for years. Not a whole lot of people saw those exact moves

Roberts has his ‘best event back’ following wrist surgery By RENALDO DORSETT Tribune Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net AS he continues his return to form, Justin Roberts produced what he called his “best event back” following wrist surgery last summer. Roberts’ run at the latest USA F25 Futures event in Laguna Niguel - a city in California - came to an end in a second-round loss in the main draw to No.5 ranked Michael Zhu of the United States, 6-1, 6-1. Despite the disappointing finish, which he faulted to his own mismanagement of the match schedule, Roberts said he remains optimistic on the remainder of the season. “It wasn’t the best for me, there was some

confusion with the match schedule. I thought I was playing the second match after 10am, but the matches were switched and I was actually playing first, on at 10. I had to enter the court directly without preparation so it was a rough one for me. My opponent was playing well and I never got comfortable in the match,” he said. “This tournament was a good one overall for me, a part from today, but it was my fault for not double checking the schedule the night before.” Roberts won four matches in the qualifying draw and the first round of the main draw. He began with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Kyle Montrel (USA), followed by a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over Mandresy

I played two teammates that are ranked nationally so it shows I’m right up there in the mix with some of the best guys in the country. I think a team full of guys like us can go all the way this year so we are really excited about what is to come.” Roberts graduated last May from the University

of South Florida and completes his final year of college eligibility this season at Arizona State University. He tore a ligament in his right wrist and had an eventual bone avulsion where a piece of the bone broke off on its joint. He eventually had it reattached. “I think I handled the injury and being out for about nine months competition and seven months playing tennis very well. It was hard in the beginning but I kept up with my fitness and mental side of the game and I feel I came back better in some things than I was before, which is always a positive,” he said. “Leaving USF to come to ASU has been a really good transition. It’s a little

different being in the desert but the coash at ASU was the first coach I had at USF so I know what I’m getting there. The guys are great, we have a really talented team so we look forward to doing some big things this year, win the PAC 12 conference and do some damage in the NCAA tournament. Everything has been going good, I just look forward to the rest of the year.” Arizona opens their season on January 18. ASU is set to play one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the country. This season’s schedule includes nine top-25 teams on the ITA/Oracle end of season poll last year and the top four teams in the nation.

‘We need to ensure that our athletes are comfortable’ right here at home FOR years, we have complained that our elite Bahamian athletes have not been treated fairly and there was and is the possibility that we could and would lose some of them to other countries. We’ve reached that point where another of our talented athletes has migrated to another country. It was revealed that Women’s National Basketball Association forward/ centre Jonquel Jones is now a citizen of Bosnia and Herzegovina. While there has been no official communication to the effect, Jones reportedly made a request to the Bahamas Basketball Federation and was subsequently granted her release to compete for Bosnia and Herzegovina, a country on the Balkan Peninsula in southeastern Europe. It seems like a simple transition and a process that all parties concerned didn’t have a problem agreeing to. Jones, a native of Grand Bahama, is not the first high-profile athlete to retreat to another country and she probably won’t be the last based on the way we treat them when they have attained their stardom. Bosnia has qualified to compete in the FIBA Women’s Eurobasket, scheduled for Serbia and Latvia June 27 to July 7, with a chance to advance to the 2020 Olympic Games in Toyko, Japan. The Bahamas, having just competed in the Centrobasket in Manati, Puerto Rico where they finished fifth, is not in a position to qualify for the Olympics, at least not in 2020. But further than that, it seems to be more of a financial consideration that tipped the scale in Jones taking her talent from the

Bahamas to Bosnia as a player on the international scene. Could we end up seeing more players, or athletes for that matter, make that giant leap from our tiny shores to the bigger world in the United States or Europe? Earlier this year, there was the claim that quartermiler Steven Gardiner was contemplating changing his allegiance from the Bahamas to the United States after he applied for his green card. Gardiner, a native of Abaco, was embattled with the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations over an inquiry into why he refused to run in the heats of the men’s 4 x 400 metre relay at the IAAF World Championships last year in London, England. The IAAF has since exonerated Gardiner and he’s now cleared to continue to compete without any hinderance. Could you imagine if he had abandoned the country and moved on? A few years ago, promising Davis Cup tennis player Ryan Sweeting left the Bahamas and took advantage of his American citizenship. However, it didn’t pan out to any tremendous success as it would had he opted to stay with the Bahamas. But for various reasons or the other, athletes find themselves in a dilemma where they are forced to

make a decision and obviously there will be more of this discussion in the future. As a country, we have to ensure that our athletes are treated fairly and they are properly compensated for their efforts in the sporting arena as they proudly carry the Bahamian flag across their chest. No longer can we just sit back and say we “love our athletes” and their achievement but, on the other hand, we’re not showing them just how much we “value and appreciate” their accomplishments. The Bahamas is only a small nation, but we have some great athletes and with the handful that are succeeding, we need to ensure that they are comfortable in this environment that we call home. Farewell Zervos It’s going to be hard to walk into The Tribune newspaper, especially after coming from a trip overseas to cover a sporting event and not hearing Tony Zervos calling me into the library to get a complete run down of what transpired. His last words in parting, each and every time we conversate about an international event, was always the same: “You should write a book about your experience.” And each time he said it, I promised him that I would “dedicate it to him.” Now I have to fulfil my obligation.

I remember when I first met him, he made sure that I was aware that he was one of the first bowlers in the country to have rolled the historic 300 game. He produced the facts at the

time to prove it. One of the other things that I remembered about this astute man is his witty sense of humour. He was very passionate and knowledgeable about any and every topic you discuss.

This year, she experienced some delay in getting her passport, which ultimately led to her reporting to the Sun’s training camp late. She eventually saw her role reduced. Although she was named the WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year, Jones and the Sun found themselves in the same predicament that they were in last year, facing Phoenix, who once again abruptly ended their season in the second round of the playoffs. In the three years she’s played in the WNBA, Jones has appeared in 102 games, starting in 56. She has played an average of 21.0 minutes with a field goal percentage of .539, three-point of .439 and free throw of .764. She has pulled down 7.0 rebounds per game, dished out 1.3 assists, stripped 0.7 steals, blocked 1.2 rebounds, turned the ball over 1.3 times and had an 11.3 scoring average. While playing for George Washington, Jones suited up for the Bahamas women’s national team at the Caribbean Basketball

Confederation in 2014 in Tortola, British Virgin Islands. The Bahamas team, coached by Yolett McPheeMcCuin, ended up in fifth place as Jones averaged a tournament high 14.0 rebounds, was second with 17.2 points and fifth with 1.4 blocks per game in the five games they played. “Playing for my country was a reward in itself, though it was disappointing not to achieve our team goal of winning the gold medal,” said Jones in an interview at the time of the tournament. Jones was unavailable for comment, but Bowleg said she found herself in similar situations as so many other Bahamian athletes who have been approached by other countries to compete for them. “I think our women’s team stood a very good chance of getting to the next level with her and coach Yolett,” Bowleg stated. “When we put that combination with the better players we have, we believe that the chances of them getting to the Olympics was very great. “Unfortunately, Jonquel puts herself in a position where she will no longer

be able to represent the Bahamas in any international competition. She understands that. We were somewhat disappointed, but it came down to what was more important to the individual. At this point and time, it came down to earning the maximum dollars for her family.” Bowleg said the federation did its best to try to convince Jones to stay and they have the trail of the paperwork to prove it. But he said she made her decision and they have to live with it. He wished her every success in her new endeavour. Bosnia and Herzegovina, with a population of 3.5 million people, is on the verge of preparing to compete in the FIBA Women’s Eurobasket, scheduled for Serbia and Latvia June 27 to July 7. The tournament will serve as a qualifier for the 2020 Olympic Games in Toyko, Japan. With Jones now available to be inserted into their line-up, Bosnia is hoping to change their outlook and projection at the tournament. The Bahamas, on the other hand, will have to continue its climb up the ladder without its best player.

It should be easy to deduce that Butler can see himself with the Clippers, New York or Brooklyn, since all of those teams will have the cap space to give him the $140 million (or $190 million) max contract he’s seeking. Miami would interest him as well, since Butler has raved about the city in the past and he’s still very tight with fellow Marquette alum and former Chicago teammate Dwyane Wade. Toronto is believed to be on his radar. Playing alongside LeBron James with the Lakers is something that hardly anyone in the NBA would sneeze at. A person with knowledge of the Timberwolves’ situation said that Minnesota has been talking to multiple teams, gauging the Butler market. The person spoke to The Associated Press yesterday on condition of anonymity because talks are ongoing. The Timberwolves aren’t exactly in a position of strength, since now everyone knows that Butler wants out and training camps start in a few days. But that doesn’t mean Minnesota doesn’t control how this will play out. When Leonard asked for his trade, the Spurs had the luxury of time and wound up getting a very good deal from Toronto. The Cavs and the Pacers also had plenty of time to work out something to their likings when moving Irving and George. Minnesota doesn’t have that same cushion. That’ll eventually lead to Butler being asked why he waited until the final days of the

Butler was their leading scorer last season. He’s an All-Star. He helped them end a 14-year playoff drought. Losing him, no matter what they get back, wouldn’t seem to help the Wolves’ chances of returning to the playoffs in a still-loaded Western Conference. Sometimes, even irreconcilable differences work out.

Houston won NBA championships in 1994 and 1995, led by Hakeem Olajuwon. People forget that in 1992, he demanded a trade in a very ugly situation sparked by the Rockets thinking that he was faking a hamstring injury. They mended fences and won titles. Most of the time, though, when a player wants out, they get out. Dwight Howard demanded to be traded by Orlando in 2012, and got his way. Shaquille O’Neal wanted to leave the Lakers in 2004, got sent to the Heat, and then eventually forced them to send him to Phoenix. Chris Paul and Chris Webber have forced trades, too. And it’s not a new thing — Wilt Chamberlain and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar wanted trades and got them. Butler got his trade ball rolling. Where it goes, at least this season, that’s up to Wolves coach and president Tom Thibodeau — whose own future in Minnesota might be hanging by a thread as well right now — more than anyone else.

BROWNS TOP JETS FOR FIRST WIN SINCE 2016 By TOM WITHERS AP Sports Writer CLEVELAND (AP) — For the first time in 635 days, the Cleveland Browns found a way to win. Baker Mayfield showed them how. The No. 1 overall pick replaced injured starter Tyrod Taylor and sparked the Browns, who got two 1-yard touchdown runs from Carlos Hyde and beat the New York Jets 21-17 last night for their first win since December 24, 2016. And so ends Cleveland’s 19-game winless streak, the NFL’s second-longest since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger.

The Browns (1-1-1) trailed 14-0 in the first half before Mayfield came in for Taylor and led four scoring drives while winning an unexpected matchup against Jets rookie quarterback Sam Darnold. Cleveland passed on taking Darnold in the draft and instead chose Mayfield, the Heisman Trophy winner from Oklahoma. Mayfield finished 17 of 23 for 201 yards in a little more than a half after coming in after Taylor suffered a concussion. Darnold had one last chance, but was intercepted by Terrence Mitchell with 11 seconds left.

Wildcats snatch 2-1 lead FROM PAGE 1 two runs batted in (RBI) and scored five times to help her own cause. Defensively, she gave up 10 hits and struck out four batters for the win. In addition to their thirdinning massacre, the Lady Wildcats, managed by Anthony Bullard, also produced three runs in the first inning, four in the second, one in the fourth and fifth and two in the sixth as they simply took advantage of the Lady Truckers’ miscues. Left fielder Tyrice Curry led their attack as she went 3-for-6 with three RBI (on an in-the-park home run in the third) and five runs scored. Centre fielder Lashonda Bethel was 1-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, shortstop Larikah Russell was 5-for-6 with four runs scored, third sacker Ruthann Simms went 4-for-5 with five RBI and two runs scored and right fielder Michesia Davis was 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. Diva Burrows started for the Lady Truckers and was tagged with the loss before she got pulled midway in the third and was replaced with centre fielder Dawanya Pratt. She didn’t get out of the inning as Dawn Johnson had to step in from first base to complete the game. But then, it was a little too late as the damage had already been done. Together, they gave up 24 hits and Pratt was responsible for their only strike out. “We had too many errors,” was how Dawn Johnson tried to sum up their defeat. “Our pitcher pitched about 6-7 games straight and our team didn’t back her up. Too many errors. When you have more errors than hits and runs, you get beat and you get beat bad.” But the good thing, according to Johnson, is it’s only a 2-1 deficit. “We can bounce back,” she said. “Teams get beat when they are up 3-0, so it ain’t over until the fat lady sings.” The Lady Truckers, managed by Sidney ‘Bobby Baylor’ Fernander, scored their first run in the top of the first, added two in the second and one each in the third, fourth and sixth innings. Catcher Jirett Sturrup went 2-for-4 with two RBI, Pratt was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and left fielder Theota Ferguson was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Game four of the series is scheduled for 8:30pm Saturday, following the men’s game between the defending champions C&S Hitmen and the Commando Security Truckers. The men played game three late last night but the result of the game was not available up to press time.

Red Sox clinch 3rd straight AL East title with win at Yankees By MIKE FITZPATRICK AP Baseball Writer NEW YORK (AP) — Mookie Betts and the Boston Red Sox won their third consecutive AL East championship Thursday night, clinching on enemy turf with an 11-6 victory over the rival New York Yankees. Betts homered, doubled twice and drove in five runs, finishing with four hits as the Red Sox overcame Giancarlo Stanton’s go-ahead grand slam in the fourth inning. Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a tying home run in the seventh and Xander Bogaerts put Boston ahead with a sacrifice fly. With the best record in baseball and a playoff berth already secured, Boston (104-49) closed out a once-tight division race with nine games to spare. J.D. Martinez and the Red Sox, alone in first place since July 2, will open the postseason at home on Oct. 5 against an opponent to be determined. Never before had Boston finished in first place three years in a row. The club needs one victory to match

the franchise record held by the 1912 World Series champions. It took three tries, but these Red Sox finally earned their chance to celebrate at Yankee Stadium under rookie manager Alex Cora. Boston entered the three-game series needing a single victory to lock up its fourth AL East title in six years, but the Yankees put the party on hold for a few nights with two straight wins. Craig Kimbrel whiffed a slumping Stanton for the final out, and the Red Sox strolled out of the dugout to give each other hugs and high-fives in a muted celebration around the mound. They walked off the field and headed inside to cheers from Boston fans behind the third base dugout. Then, it was time to break out the bubbly in the Bronx. Another run scored on the play when center fielder Aaron Hicks was charged with a throwing error. Betts launched his 30th home run in the eighth, a threerun shot off All-Star closer Aroldis Chapman, who was activated from the disabled list Wednesday.

INDIA BEATS PAKISTAN BY EIGHT WICKETS IN ASIA CUP DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — India was rarely tested in a dominating eight-wicket win over traditional rival Pakistan in their group match of the Asia Cup Wednesday. At Dubai International Stadium, captain Sarfraz Ahmed’s decision to bat first after winning the toss backfired when a disciplined Indian bowling attack wrapped up the Pakistan innings for a meagre 162 in 43.1 overs. India’s reply was led by its rampant captain Rohit Sharma, who raced to 52 in just 39 balls and added 86 runs in 13 overs with Shikhar Dhawan for the opening stand. The US Anti-Doping Agency on Wednesday announced the length of Jones’ ban for his second violation of the UFC’s anti-doping policy. He has been suspended since testing positive for a steroid metabolite last summer, and the ban will conclude Oct. 28 — 15 months after the collection of the positive sample. The decision by an arbitrator means the 31-year-old Jones could even fight at UFC 230 in New York on Nov. 3, if the mixed martial arts promotion decides to book his comeback bout on that card. “It’s difficult to express myself at this moment, but I can definitely say my heart is filled with gratitude

and appreciation,” Jones said in a statement posted on his social media accounts. “I want to thank all of you who have stood by me during the toughest stretch of my life. It has meant the world to me and always will. But now is the time to shift the focus front and center to the road ahead. Greatness is what I’m chasing and the path to reclaiming my throne is now officially open. Charr’s management says the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) found “two suspect substances” in a voluntary test while the German-based Syrian was training. Charr needs to address the charges and can demand his B sample is also tested. The 33-year-old Charr (31-4) had been due to fight Oquendo (37-8) in Cologne on September 29. “The presumption of innocence applies till then, but due to the unexplained situation, the promoter and Charr’s management are not in a position to go ahead with the event,” his management said in a statement. Real Madrid fans with a lot to celebrate, including a new No. 7 By TALES AZZONI AP Sports Writer MADRID (AP) — In a familiar scene, Real Madrid fans jumped to their feet and cheered loudly after a superb goal by the No. 7. Only this time it wasn’t Cristiano Ronaldo. The player being celebrated on Wednesday was Mariano Diaz, a 25-year-old forward from the Dominican Republic who had just scored with a beautiful long-range shot in the team’s 3-0 win over Roma in the Champions League. The fans started to get excited the moment Diaz was asked to warm up on the sidelines, and it soon got much louder. “I’m incredibly grateful for how I’ve been welcomed to the Bernabeu,” Diaz said. “I have a lot of respect for all the players who wore the No. 7 jersey in the past. It’s not a burden for me.” Diaz, a promising talent from Madrid’s youth squad, was re-signed by the club without much fanfare after a season with Lyon.

His impressive performance in the few minutes he played in his first match back gave fans plenty of reason to believe Ronaldo won’t be missed as much as initially feared. That was the impression Roma coach Eusebio Di Francesco got after seeing his team get dominated by Madrid. “This team has a lot of quality. If I were a Madrid fan I wouldn’t worry too much about not having Ronaldo,” Di Francesco said. “They lost a great champion, but they have many other champions in the squad who can compensate his departure.” There were indeed many signs in Madrid’s comfortable win to show that Di Francesco could be right.

Madrid faced Roma with 10 starters from the Champions League final against Liverpool.
