Salute to Miller-Uibo, our ‘Diamond queen’ By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net ith the rhythmic sounds of the junkanoo music playing in the background, ‘Golden Girl’ Shaunae Miller-Uibo was ushered through a parade of workers at the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture and Ministry of Education, Science and Technology. The visit yesterday morning was for a courtesy call on Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Lanisha Rolle and a press conference where MillerUibo was lauded for her remarkable undefeated season in both the 200 and 400 metres on the international scene. The Commonwealth Games, International Amateur Athletic Federation’s Diamond League and Continental Cup champion was highlighted by a rendition from Bahamian icon Julian Believe and a portrait presentation by celebrity artist Jamaal Rolle. Miller-Uibo, accompanied by her husband Maicel and father Shaun Miller, also received a special treat when Clinton Davis, the general manager of the Courtyard Marriott, presented the elegant 6-foot, 1-inch Olympic 400m gold medallist with a lifetime stay at their downtown resort. In her address, Rolle took the time to highlight Miller-Uibo’s accomplishments that comes on the shoulders of former performances from Sir Durward ‘Sea Wolf’ Knowles, Thomas A Robinson, Shonel Ferguson, the Golden Girls, the Golden Knights, Tonique Williams, Mark Knowles and Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace. “It is my humble yet considered opinion, that today, we have surpassed the gold with our Shaunae, we have made it platinum and with the help of the almighty God, there is no stopping us now,” Rolle said. “This morning, my ministry, the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, in particular, our division of Youth, is pleased to welcome home our Olympic gold medallist and world record holder Mrs Shaunae Miller-Uibo.” While she didn’t make mention of any financial compensation for her achievement as the top female 200/400m competitor this year and a candidate for the IAAF Athlete of the Year, Rolle

DERRICK ATKINS IN ASSISTANT COACHING POST FOR CATAMOUNTS By RENALDO DORSETT Tribune Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net NATIONAL 100 metre record holder Derrick Atkins became the latest Bahamian to earn a new coaching post in NCAA Division I Athletics. Atkins was named an assistant coach of Western Carolina Catamounts Track and Field, with a focus on sprints, hurdles and relays. Catamounts head coach Cale McDaniel made the official announcement in a press release issued on the school’s athletic website. “We are excited to welcome coach Atkins to the Catamount track family,” McDaniel said. “He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge with him to Cullowhee. He has proven himself to be an excellent sprint coach at this level and we are very fortunate to have him work with our young people.” Atkins recently completed a three-year stint as an assistant coach for the Kennesaw State University Owls in Kennesaw, Georgia, where he coached three NCAA East Regional qualifiers, 12 A-SUN conference individual champions, 20 All-ASUN performers, multiple indoor and outdoor team championships and several school records. Atkins, 34, is the Bahamian 100m national record holder, and the only

Stuart entering 3rd year as head coach at Life University NYLES Stuart is now entering his fourth year at Life University and third year as its head coach. Stuart is also owner of Marietta Performance Training, a sports performance facility that specialises in fitness and strength conditioning for track and field athletes. During his first full year as head coach, several athletes earned All-Conference Honours with two advancing to an NAIA Championships event, one during cross country season (Elizabeth Skipper) and the other during indoor season (Monique Keene - long jump).

In the spring of 2016, Stuart led the Running Eagles to a second place finish at the indoor conference championships, earning coach of the year and having three athletes qualify to the indoor national championships, two in the 400m and one in the long and triple jump. During the indoor championships, Nyles coached Bahamian triple jumper Bria Sands to earn the title of national champion. With the momentum from indoors, Bria was able to earn the NAIA Outdoor Championship title as well. Before his role as head coach at Life University,

NYLES STUART Stuart served as an assistant coach, designing and administering the strength conditioning programme,

along with coaching the horizontal jumps. In just the programme’s second official year returning to NAIA track and field, Stuart was able to produce an NAIA indoor and outdoor championship qualifier - Bria Sands - who achieved All-American status placing as high as third. As the head trainer of Marietta Performance Training (MPT), Stuart has trained dozens of high school athletes with an emphasis on injury prevention and sports performance. In the past six years, Stuart has worked with

coaches to produce just over 20 individual state titles, which currently ranks MPT as one of the most successful youth strength programmes in such a short amount of time in the state of Georgia. Coach Nyles also has a history of success working with elite athletes such as Bianca Stuart who, in 2018, leapt to a distance of 6.74 metres, tying for the 21st best jump in the world. Lastly, from the fall of 2011 to 2013, Stuart served has the strength coach for Derrick Atkins, assisting him in regaining world-class performances of 10.06 and 10.08 seconds.

THE Albany resort hosted elite collegiate talent on the tennis courts for the first in two weekends of United States Tennis Association sanctioned events. The LSU Tigers, North Carolina State Wolfpack and University of South Florida Bulls women’s tennis programmes each opened their seasons at the USTA Bahamas College Invitational last weekend. LSU finished with the top record overall at 26-8 over the course the tournament. They went 11-1 in doubles play and 15-7 in singles. The Wolfpack tallied a record of 25-14, including an 18-9 singles record and 7-5 doubles record. Four Bulls players picked up singles wins at the tournament, including two ranked wins. The Tigers, out of the SEC, return off a 15-11 season, including a trip to the NCAA Tournament, where they lost in the first round to No. 24 Tulsa. LSU’s doubles team, defending national champions Eden Richardson and Jessica Golovin, are ranked No. 7 in the Oracle ITA Preseason Rankings. The ACC’s Wolfpack ended the season ranked No. 34 in the Oracle/ITA team rankings released on May 23. Posting a 17-15 (7-7 ACC) record, NC State earned selection to the NCAA Championship for the third-straight year in 2018.

wish you the very best.” Rolle also commended high jumper Donald Thomas and quartermiler Steven Gardiner for their performances this year, individually and collectively, for making great strides on the world stage.

In response to the accolades, a gracious Miller-Uibo thanked the Bahamian people for their support and the ministry for the celebrations they gave her that started with the junkanoo music. “Everyone who knows me knows that track and field has been a part of my life since I was a very young girl,” said the 24-year-old.

“I started track and field when I was six years old. Just to make it to this part in my life is a blessing. I want to give God thanks and praise for bringing me to this point in my life. As an ambassador for the country, Miller-Uibo said every time she steps out on the track, she feels the love and appreciation from the Bahamian people and she just wants to go out there and hear the national anthem play whenever she wins. She advised the audience that she’s looking forward to duplicating her feat next year and she

hopes that the public will continue to support her and the rest of the Bahamian athletes in all of her endeavours. Rolle, in her closing remarks, said the performances of our athletes have inspired this year’s theme for the National Sports Month in November to be celebrated under the theme: “Ain’t no stopping us now - we’re on the move.”

Bahamas Baseball Association gets umpires ready to officiate games By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net OVER the past few months, the Bahamas Baseball Association has been able to get all of the splinter organisations back under one umbrella. Last week, they concentrated on getting their umpires ready to officiate the games. Martin ‘Pork’ Burrows, the BBA’s chief umpire, hosted a week-long clinic, the first in Grand Bahama from Monday to Wednesday where they had about 10 candidates in attendance. Burrows was accompanied by facilitators Radael Uribe, the chief umpire/ overseer for professional baseball in the Dominican Republic and Daniel Perez, the chief umpire for local baseball in the DR. The trio returned to New Providence where they concluded the clinic with sessions at Freedom Farm

and the Junior Baseball League of Nassau. In attendance were about 30 candidates from Freedom Farm, JBLN and the Community Baseball as well as some persons who are not affiliated with any of the organisations. “The purpose of the clinic is to ensure that the umpires are certified to be able to call in our national championships,” Burrows said. “They need to be certified. Also, we want to prepare them in the event that we need officials to travel with our national teams whenever they travel. “In order for any official to travel with the national team, they have to be certified.” Burrows expressed his gratitude to the BBA and the Bahamas Olympic Committee for their assistance in getting the officials to come to the Bahamas to conduct the clinic. With the clinic over and done with, Burrows said

from time to time, the BBA will be holding refresher courses for the umpires to keep abreast of the new rules and regulations of the sport. At the same time, Burrows said he will be forming an umpire association that will enable umpires to officiate in the local high school games and the league play.

‘FOR ALL THE NAYSAYERS, HOW BOUT THEM COWBOYS?’ THE jury is still out on the Dallas Cowboys’ offence. However, it seems embattled offensive coordinator Scott Linehan got the memo. On the third play from scrimmage, WR Tayvon Austin flew past Giants QB Kelvin Martin as Cowboys QB Dak Prescott hit him in stride for a 64-yard touchdown pass. Austin, who finished with two catches for 79 yards and a touchdown, recounted the catch post game. “It was just a regular go route, it’s just beat your man, Dak gave me a chance, I made a good move at the line and just made a good catch and ran.” Ezekiell Elliott chipped in with 78 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. Not bad for a small sample, my prediction is you see an increase in the run over the coming weeks as the Cowboys embrace being a defensive team. Now to the above mentioned defense of the Cowboys. Hats off to DC Rod Marinelli and Asst. DC Chris Richard, the Dallas defense dominated much of the game holding Giants rookie sensation RB Saquon Barkley largely in check, and making superstar WR Odell Beckham Jr a non-factor. The second stellar performance from the defence in as many weeks, 6 sacks, 1 forced fumble and recovery sealed the victory. Showing just how far the Cowboys defensive unit has come, as well as their likely identity, not only as a unit, but of the entire team as well moving forward. MAHOMES MARINO LIKE Twenty three-year-old Patrick Mahomes, the ‘wunderkind’ QB for the Kansas City Chiefs, is taking the NFL by storm, all while invoking memories of Hall of Famer Dan Marino in the process. Mahomes threw for 326 yards and six touchdown passes in a 42-37 shellacking

of the Pittsburgh Steelers, giving him 10 touchdown passes in his first two games, setting a new NFL record. Mahomes showed mixed efficiency and bravado, completing 23 of 28 passes without throwing an interception, rocketing passes that left a vapour trail. Very reminiscent of a young ‘Dandy Dan’ Marino chucking bombs to the ‘Marks Brothers’ (Duper and Clayton) electrifying the historic Orange Bowl in Miami. Unlike Marino, Mahomes is a mobile at 6-foot-3, 225lbs with a ‘bazooka’ arm, able to hurl it 70 yards in the air. Marino was 6’4, 228lbs with a cannon arm, but always seemed to be running in quick sand. Mahomes will provide plenty of highlights, the Chiefs’ defence is suspect at best. Therefore it will provide ample opportunity for Mahomes to light up the scoreboard and an offensive loaded with talent. RB Kareem Hunt, WR’s Tyreek Hill, Sammie Watkins and TE Travis Kelce will prevent opponents from marching up consistently with their offensive schemes. I’m looking forward to watching Mahomes, who has brought fun and excitement back to the NFL, do his thing going forward, and seeing how many NFL records fall in the process. ‘FITZMAGIC’ Veteran NFL journeyman QB Ryan Fitzpatrick is playing out of his mind. Throwing for 819 yards passing, eight touchdowns passing, one rushing with

one interception. Leading his seventh NFL team the Bucs to impressive victories over the New Orleans Saints and defending Super Bowl Champions, the Philadelphia Eagles. ‘Fitzmagic’ has the ‘Bucs and the NFL mesmerised, and suspended Tampa Bay Buccaneers incumbent QB Jameis Winston poised to remain seated after his three-game NFL suspension. Fitzpatrick had two of the best games of his 13-year NFL career and may just force Tampa Bay to stick with him as their starting quarterback. Facing off against the reigning Super Bowl champions, Fitzpatrick was 27 of 33 for 402 passing yards, four touchdowns, one interception and posted a 144.4 passer rating. Fitzpatrick also threw for more than 400 passing yards and four touchdowns in Week 1 against the Saints. The only thing hotter in the league - the aforementioned Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes. Look for ‘Fitzmagic’ to continue, maybe not at this torrid pace, and for Winston to remain seated until further notice. “We will be using these games to evaluate the progress that our umpires make,” Burrows said. “We want to make sure that they continue to practice the things that they were taught in the clinic. “It’s a first phase, but we intend to work with this crop of umpires to develop the future of the sport,

especially with the new stadium coming on stream.” Burrows said he was pleased with the turnout and the participation of the candidates in Grand Bahama and New Providence. He’s now planning on taking a clinic to Eleuthera and Abaco. “From that, my next step will be to go into

the schools and see if I can get some more umpires to do the clinic and officiate at the games,” Burrows said. “We want to have as many umpires as we can get because baseball is going to need them with all of the plans that the Bahamas Baseball Association has ahead for the sport,” he added.

ATKINS NAMED ASSISTANT TRACK COACH FROM PAGE 1 Bahamian to run legally under 10 seconds. The highlight of his career on the track came in 2007 in Osaka, Japan, where he clocked an astonishing 9.91 seconds for the Bahamas’ national record and the silver medal at the IAAF World Championships behind American Tyson Gay and ahead of race favourite, Asafa Powell of Jamaica. A graduate of both CR Walker and Dickinson State University, he represented the Bahamas at both the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games. In 2008, Atkins missed a spot in the final at the

Beijing Olympics where he ran 10.13 for sixth in his semi-final. In 2012 in London, he ran 10.08s to finish fourth in the semifinals but did not advance. Atkins officially announced his retirement in 2015 and took up the job as an assistant coach working with the sprints and relays for Kennesaw State. He was inducted in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Hall of fame for his collegiate career, which included three team national track and field championships, seventime individual national champion, 15 National

NAIA All-American honours, nine time DAC-10 All Conference honours and Dickinson State University male athlete of the year. Atkins has indoor and outdoor conference sprint records that are still standing, and he led his team to four Dakota Athletic Conference championships. Atkins won national titles in the 100 metres in 2003, 2004 and 2005. In addition, he is an eighttime All-American in the sprints and relays. Atkins led Dickinson State to two consecutive national championships in 2004 and 2005 and to a runner-up finish in 2003.

the ACC, Big 10 and SEC. The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets were originally intended to make the trip to the Bahamas in 2017 at the inaugural Albany Bahamas Invitational. However, those plans were cancelled due to Hurricane Maria. This year, the Yellow Jackets, from the ACC, will travel to Albany to face the Michigan Wolverines and Auburn Tigers.

One Last Dance: Wade returning to Heat for a final season By TIM REYNOLDS AP Basketball Writer MIAMI (AP) — Dwyane Wade looked into the camera, stood alone in the middle of a darkened room and talked for 10 minutes. He struggled with his words at times, unable to control his emotions. He wept. And finally, he made what he called the hardest decision of his life. One more year. Retirement needs to wait a little bit longer for Wade, who announced Sunday night in a video taped earlier in the day that he’s returning for a 16th and final NBA season. He basically spent the entirety of the last four months weighing his options, and retirement — even just a few days ago — was an extremely real possibility in his mind. “I’ve always did things my way,” said Wade, who is expected to sign a $2.4 million, one-year deal later this week. “Whether they’ve been good or whether they’ve been bad, I got here

because I’ve done things the way that I feel is right for me and right for my family. And what I feel is right ... I feel it’s right to ask you guys to join me for one last dance, for one last season. “This is it. I’ve given this game everything that I have, and I’m happy about that, and I’m going to give it for one last season, everything else I have left.” Wade is Miami’s career leader in points, assists, steals and games played. His status was an enormous question mark this summer, especially now with the team a week away from going to training camp. Miami has signed 19 players for camp, one shy of the maximum preseason allotment, and it was never a question why they kept that last spot open. It’s filled now, by the most accomplished Heat player ever. Yet it was no guarantee that Wade, a 22.5-point scorer for his career, would return. His decision took longer than some expected, partly

Mack, Amukamara lead Bears over Seahawks 24-17 By ANDREW SELIGMAN AP Sports Writer CHICAGO (AP) — Khalil Mack had one of six sacks against Russell Wilson, Prince Amukamara returned an interception 49 yards for a touchdown and the Chicago Bears beat the Seattle Seahawks 24-17 Monday night to give coach Matt Nagy his first career victory. Mack, who landed with Chicago after a blockbuster trade with Oakland in September, had a stripsack in the first half and consistently pressured Wilson in another dominant performance. Amukamara jumped the route on a pass intended for Rashaad Penny near midfield for his first career touchdown, making it 24-10 with 6:37 left. It was his first interception since 2015 with the New York Giants. Danny Trevathan then stripped Wilson with his second sack of the game. The Bears’ Leonard Floyd recovered the fumble, and Chicago hung on after blowing a 20-point lead in a season-opening loss to a hobbled Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers. The Seahawks (0-2) lost for just the second time in nine Monday night games under coach Pete Carroll. Wilson has been sacked six times in each game this season. With the Bears applying constant pressure and his receivers struggling to get open, the four-time Pro Bowl quarterback completed 22 of 36 passes for 226 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. Chicago’s Mitchell Trubisky was 25 of 34 for 200 yards. The No. 2 overall pick in last year’s draft, Trubisky threw touchdown passes to Trey Burton on Chicago’s first possession

and rookie Anthony Miller early in the fourth quarter. But he was also intercepted two times by Shaquill Griffin. The Bears presented longtime linebacker Brian Urlacher with his Ring of Excellence for being inducted into the Hall of Fame. The ceremony came after an ugly first half that saw Trubisky get picked off twice and Wilson get sacked five times. But the Bears managed to take a 10-3 lead to the locker room.
