ce pitcher Alcott Forbes missed a no-hitter and the shut-out, but he was confident that his C&S Hitmen would not have lost game one of the men’s best-ofseven championship series against the Commando Security Truckers. The series got started in the Bankers’ Field at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex on Saturday night.

The defending champions Hitmen, behind Forbes’ five-hitter with 15 strike outs, held off the Truckers 5-2 to take the initial 1-0 lead in their series that is scheduled to continue 7pm Tuesday. “The first game was very sluggish. I was resting a lot,” Forbes pointed out about his performance. “I didn’t have no repetition in, but I thank God for the win. My only concern is that we are making too much mistakes on the base path early. I believe after

this game, you will see a different team with a different mindset.” Although they made some costly mistakes, the Hitmen, managed by Darren Stevens, had opened a 5-0 lead at the end of the bottom of the fifth and they stayed ahead the rest of the game. “It’s always good to stay out front. You have more opportunities to score runs,” Forbes said. “Because it’s seven innings, you can’t stop anybody because in the

championship, so it’s important to stay out front, give yourself the leeway so if you make a mistake, like you see what happened in the seventh, I missed a pitch and the follow-up with a double.” Third baseman Rashad Seymour got hit with one out and the bases loaded to the five-run second inning rally. Centre fielder Rodney Forbes drew a one-out bases loaded RBI walk and with two out, Forbes ripped a three-run triple to

clean the bases and pushed their lead to 5-0. And after taking the initial lead in the series, Forbes said there’s no looking back. “I believe the first game is the pacesetter, I believe that now that we have them down, we just have to keep our foot on them and keep them out.” The Truckers, managed by Perry Seymour, threatened to score in the first, third and fifth. The Dallas quarterback threw a 64-yard touchdown pass to Tavon Austin on the third play of the game and the Cowboys sacked Eli Manning six times in a 20-13 victory over the New York Giants last night. The Dallas defence was strong again, just as in an opening loss at Carolina, as the Cowboys (1-1) avoided the first 0-2 start in seven seasons under coach Jason Garrett. Manning and the Giants have started 0-2 for the fifth time in the past six seasons. After saying “challenge accepted”

Tinker, Reckley to join Conquistadors this fall By RENALDO DORSETT Tribune Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net A PAIR of Bahamian players will join the freshman class at Dodge City Community College Basketball for the upcoming fall campaign. Deon’Ta Tinker and KJ Reckley are two members of a complete roster overhaul for the Conquistadors in the Kansas Jayhawk Conference of NJCAA Division I. Tinker and Reckley were also teammates together at Life Prep Academy in Wichita, Kansas before making the transition to the JuCo level. Head coach Steve Tucker returns just three players from the 2017-18

season and Tucker was one of the team’s four final additions added this summer. “We expect to be better in every way next season,” Tucker said. Reckley completed his high school years at Life Prep Academy in Wichita, Kansas where he averaged 18 points, 14 rebounds, three blocked shots and two assists per game. He also received HCAA AllConference honours twice in his career. “He is a pure athlete that can run and jump,” coach Tucker said. “He has athleticism that is off the charts.” Tinker was one of the earliest additions to the Conquistadors recruiting class following several stops at the local

and American high school level. Recently, at the Bahamas Basketball Federation’s Summer of Thunder, he posted eight points, three rebounds and three assists while going 5-6 from the free throw line against Notre Dame. “Tinker is a relentless combo guard who attacks at will,” Tucker said. “He can jump with the best of them and his jumpshot has taken huge strides in the past six weeks. Had a good game against DI University of Notre Dame this summer.” The 2018-19 season is Coach Tucker’s second season with Dodge City Community College. Coach Tucker comes to Dodge City with an

WILDCATS STOP LADY TRUCKERS TO TAKE 1-0 LEAD By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net THE Sunshine Auto Wildcats got the timely hits and good pitching when they needed it as they rolled past the Johnson’s Lady Truckers 9-6 to snatch a 1-0 lead in their New Providence Softball Association ladies’ best-of-seven championship series on Saturday night in the Banker’s Field at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex. “Game one was a bit of a struggle at first,” said first sacker Chryshan Percentie. “We had a totally different nine line-up in the beginning, but we were able to make some adjustments and pull through for the win.” One of those players who was brought in off the bench in the fourth inning to help strengthen their defence, Percentie said they’re looking forward to stepping on the gas when they play game two at 8:30pm on Tuesday night. “We just have to realise, once our pitcher is good, we’re good to go from there,” Percentie said. “Hopefully any nine would work. We just have to make the plays and get more runs on offence. Tonight offensively, the score was low. NCAA FOOTBALL: BAHAMIANS IN THE WIN COLUMN By RENALDO DORSETT Tribune Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net NCAA football moved into week three with wins across the boards for Bahamian players at the Division I and Division II levels. Chris Ferguson and the Cincinnati Bearcats scored a 63-7 win over the Alabama A and M Bulldogs on Saturday in their home opener at Nippert Stadium. The Bearcats improved to 3-0 after a pair of wins on the road against the UCLA Bruins and the Miami (Ohio) Redhawks. Ferguson again got the start at right tackle and his line anchored the Bearcats’ offence that tallied 741 yards of total offence on the night, the second-most in school history. The all-time record of 752 yards was recorded in 2014 when Ferguson was a redshirt in his true freshman season. The offensive line paved the way for the Bearcats’ 409 yards on 55 carries. The last time the Bearcats rushed for 400 or more in a single game came in 1996. They also rushed for six touchdowns in the game, the third game in a row this season that the Bearcats have recorded at least two scores on the ground. They now have 11 rushing touchdowns thus far this season after after they scored 11 in all of the 2017 season. Their 63 points were the most scored by the team in the last five years. The new

It’s just that we didn’t get the timely hits, except for the one I got, but that was late in the seventh. “I think we had one bad inning in the second that really hurt us. We didn’t respond after they took the lead.” As they prepare for game two, Watkins assured the Hitmen that they will be ready. “All of the butterflies are out,” Watkins said. “We’re back into the championships after missing last year, but we’re back, we’re hungry with a new group of young guys, so I think we will be ready Tuesday. You will see a new team on Tuesday.” Two of the Truckers players, pitcher Eugene Pratt and shortstop Austin Hanna, both struck out in their three plate appearances, while third baseman D’Juan Seymour was the only other batter not to reach base with a ground out and a pair of strike outs. Pratt went the distance, giving up just five innings, including one in the fiverun second inning. He also recorded five strike outs.

win over West Liberty. Strachan had two receptions for 17 yards and the Golden Cougars completed just eight passes on the afternoon. In week one, the 6’ 5, 205-pound redshirt sophomore wide receiver finished with four receptions for 159 yards and one touchdown in the Cougars’ 35-31 win over West Virginia State. He finished with two catches for 68 yards and one touchdown in the Cougars’ 42-21 win over Concord in week two. Rondre Knowles-Tener and the Virginia-Wise

Cavaliers got their first win of the season in a 35-20 win over Concord. They posted an NCAA Division II era best 625 yards and overcame five fumbles to claim their first victory of the year. Knowles-Tener recorded three tackles for the second consecutive week, one solo, two assisted and also blocked an extra point. The 6’1”, 295-pound defensive lineman has seven tackles on the season. Next week, UVa-Wise travels to West Liberty and look to improve and even their win-loss record at 2-2.

TAMPA, Florida (AP) — Doug Pederson summed up a hot, frustrating day for the Philadelphia Eagles. “A lot of self-inflicted wounds,” the coach said yesterday after the reigning Super Bowl champions stumbled to a slow start in the blistering Florida sun and never fully recovered in a 27-21 loss to the surprising Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Game-time temperature was 91 degrees, with a heat index of 105. A usually reliable defence gave up a 75-yard TD reception to ex-Eagle DeSean Jackson on the first play of the game and another 75-yarder to O.J. Howard before halftime. But Philadelphia’s sputtering offence was partly to blame for the loss, too. In addition to losing a pair of fumbles and being stopped on downs twice, the Eagles hurt themselves with ill-timed penalties. That kept an injury-depleted offence missing some its top playmakers from getting into a rhythm early. “Anytime you are down a couple of guys, it affects you offensively. ... The thing was, we kept going backward in the whole first half. Either from penalties or lost yardage on first down, we were playing from behind a lot,” Pederson said. “The injuries hurt, but again, it’s self-inflicted.” The Eagles (1-1) won their season opener over Atlanta with Nick Foles throwing for just 117 yards. JACKSONVILLE, Florida (AP) — Blake Bortles threw four touchdown passes, three in the first half, and the Jacksonville Jaguars beat Tom Brady and the New England Patriots 31-20 Sunday in a rematch of last season’s AFC championship game. Bortles connected with Donte Moncrief, Keelan Cole and Austin SeferianJenkins for scores in the first 30 minutes, the second time he’s done that in his NFL career. Bortles completed 29 of 45 passes for 377 yards, with the four TDs and an interception. It was the best game of his five-year career. It was the Jaguars’ first win over Brady. They entered the game 0-8 against the Patriots quarterback. The Patriots (1-1) trailed 24-3 in the third quarter before finally showing signs of life. But Dante Fowler, returning from a one-game suspension, stripped Brady for one game-changing play, and second-year receiver Dede Westbrook added another to seal the victory. Westbrook took a short pass on a crossing route, made one defender miss and then outran another down the sideline for a 61-yard score. He got a key block from Cole. Cole finished with seven receptions for 117 yards and a score. He made a spectacular, one-handed catch on Jacksonville’s second drive and beat Eric Rowe for a 24-yard touchdown three plays later. Jacksonville led 14-0 at that point, but unlike the game eight months ago — which had much more at

But by the time the Eagles started to move the ball with some consistency, Philadelphia trailed 27-7. “I think the big thing is we can’t shoot ourselves in the foot with penalties,” Foles said. “Looking back, we’ll look at the film and grow, but I think the thing I will take from this game is how hard our team fought,” Foles added. “Tampa Bay played a tremendous game. ... We never once turned on one another, we never put our heads down, we kept our heads up, we kept fighting.” Two of Philadelphia’s best playmakers Alshon Jeffery and Darren Sproles were inactive. Running back Jay Ajayi, receiver Mike Wallace and left tackle Jason Peters were lost for portions of the

game after being injured in the first half Sunday. Ajayi returned to score a third quarter TD, and tight end Zach Ertz had 11 receptions for 94 yards. “Guys step up all the time, and that’s what we did,” Foles said. “We gave ourselves an opportunity to win this game. Obviously, we want everyone healthy, but that’s not really the case sometimes.” Nelson Agholor finished with eight catches for 88 yards, including a 2-yard TD that cut Philadelphia’s deficit to six points with 2:45 remaining. But it wasn’t enough to escape the large hole that the defence helped create by giving up the long TDs to Jackson and Howard. “You take those plays out, it’s a totally different game,” Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins said. “And, that’s completely on us.”

GORE, DOLPHINS TOP DARNOLD, MISTAKE-PRONE JETS 20-12 By DENNIS WASZAK JR AP Pro Football Writer EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Frank Gore moved up in the NFL record books with a historymaking run — and helped deliver the Miami Dolphins a victory with a game-sealing catch. Gore moved past Curtis Martin for fourth on the career rushing list, Ryan Tannehill threw two touchdown passes, Kenyan Drake ran for a score and the Dolphins took advantage of several mistakes by Sam Darnold and the New York Jets for a 20-12 victory yesterday. But with the game still hanging in the balance late in the fourth quarter, it was the 35-year-old Gore who reached back into his playmaking past. On thirdand-19 and the Dolphins nursing an eight-point lead, Ryan Tannehill threw a short pass to Gore, who got his hands on the ball and zipped up the field for exactly 19 yards before going down. “Frank made a heck of a catch there down low,” Tannehill said. “I was offbalance and the ball just went straight down on me. Frank did an amazing job of scooping that thing, making the catch and getting the first down.” The Dolphins were able to then run out the clock, giving them their first 2-0 start since 2013. Gore earned a game ball from coach Adam Gase for that play as well as his 8-yard run in the third quarter that put him behind only Barry Sanders, Walter Payton and Emmitt Smith. “It’s kind of mind blowing,” defensive end Cameron Wake said. “The team as a whole is honoured to play with the guy.” Gore, in his first season with the Dolphins and 14th in the NFL, finished with 25 yards on nine carries. “It means a lot,” he said. “I’ve been doubted my whole life, coming out of

Tannehill finished 17 of 23 for 168 yards and also ran for 44 yards on eight carries for the Dolphins, coming off a win in the longest NFL game since 1970 merger by outlasting Tennessee in 7 hours, 8 minutes last Sunday. “What we’re doing out there is close to what we’re looking to do,” Gase said of his team. “We just have to do a few things better.” SAM’S START After a solid NFL debut, the 21-year-old Darnold struggled a bit in this one. He was 25 of 41 for 334 yards and a touchdown with the two INTs in his second NFL start, but struggled to get the offence moving. The Jets will have a short turnaround, with New York travelling to winless Cleveland to play Thursday night. “Just missed opportunities,” Darnold said. “I think that goes for every game where you look at all the plays you wish you could

have back. Again, short week, got a game Thursday and we’ve got to right back to it tonight.” Darnold got off to a much better start than in the Jets’ opener in Detroit, when his first NFL pass was intercepted and returned for a touchdown. But on the Jets’ second possession in this one, Darnold turned it over when his pass intended for Quincy Enunwa was intercepted by McDonald. Three plays later, Drake took the handoff from Tannehill up the middle for a 6-yard run to give the Dolphins a 7-0 lead. Miami took advantage of another turnover after Darnold completed a 10-yard pass to Robby Anderson, who had the ball knocked out of his hands by Kiko Alonso. Raekwon McMillan recovered for the Dolphins at the Jets 49, giving Miami a short field. Albert Wilson scored on a 29-yard catch to make it 14-0. MORE MISCUES The Jets made another mistake that had the effect of a turnover when Henry Anderson’s sack of Tannehill on third-and-6 was negated by a holding penalty on Morris Claiborne, keeping the Dolphins’ drive alive. Two plays later, Tannehill connected with A.J. Derby for a 19-yard touchdown, although Jason Sanders missed the extra point. New York showed some life starting with a 44-yard completion from Darnold to Terrelle Pryor. On second-and-10 from the 14, Darnold completed a short pass to Chris Herndon, who fumbled, recovered and tried to get into the end zone, but was tackled at the 1 as time expired. Darnold and the Jets answered right back to begin the third quarter with a solid drive capped by a 28-yard touchdown catch by Bilal Powell. Jason Myers missed the extra point, making it 20-6.

They now have their best start since 2006. Marrone was widely criticised for getting conservative in the title game.

The Patriots trailed 20-10 in the fourth quarter of that one before rallying to win 24-20 and get to the Super Bowl. Brady never looked comfortable in the rematch. He completed 24 of 35 passes for 235 yards and two touchdowns, both to Chris Hogan. He was sacked twice.

Betts hurts side, says injury minor, Red Sox near East title BOSTON (AP) — Red Sox right fielder Mookie Betts left the game after hurting his left side making a throw to home plate during a 4-3 win over the New York Mets yesterday that cut Boston’s magic number to two for a third straight AL East title. Boston can clinch the division at Yankee Stadium for the second time in three seasons, needing only one win during a three-game series that opens Tuesday afternoon. Betts said the injury is minor and he will be in the lineup Tuesday. He is hitting .337 with 29 homers and 72 RBIs. MILAN (AP) — When the first goal finally came, it couldn’t have been any easier for Cristiano Ronaldo. It took the former Real Madrid forward nearly 320 minutes to score his first league goal for Juventus and he did it with the simplest of tap-ins. Ronaldo doubled his tally shortly after as the Bianconeri beat Sassuolo 2-1 in Serie A yesterday. It was Ronaldo’s fourth league match for Juventus since his Serie A record 112 million euro (then $131.5 million) move from Madrid and the relief on his face was obvious as he tore away in celebration after breaking his duck in the 50th minute. Ronaldo ran to the corner flag with his arms outstretched and displaying a huge grin. He then jumped in the air as he turned back to the field and waited to be embraced by almost all his teammates, who ran over to celebrate with him. “I wanted to score, I’m really happy,” said Ronaldo, who had missed several good chances in previous games. “That’s football. What’s most important is to win and to do well. Certainly there was a bit of pressure in general after my move from Real, there was a lot of expectation. That’s life, I’m working well. DEMBELE STAKES CLAIM TO BIG ROLE AT BARCELONA WITH ANOTHER GOAL By JOSEPH WILSON Associated Press BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Ousmane Dembele came to Barcelona’s rescue for a third time this season on Saturday, when the France forward struck a second-half winner to complete a comeback at Real Sociedad 2-1. Dembele was quickest to a poor clearance of a corner kick by Sociedad’s defence in the 66th minute, rifling a left-footed shot through a crowd while goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli was off his line. The goal gave the defending champions four wins in as many rounds of the Spanish league. That left Barcelona alone at the top of the table at two points ahead of Real Madrid, which drew at Athletic Bilbao 1-1. LAS VEGAS (AP) — Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin fought 24 rounds in the space of a year, with little to pick between them. When the scorecards were totalled Saturday night, though, the judges crowned a new middleweight champion of the world — but just barely. Alvarez won the 160pound titles held by Golovkin by the narrowest of margins, taking a majority decision to hand the longtime champion his first loss as a pro in a spirited fight that had a sold out crowd roaring. Two judges gave Alvarez the final round, allowing him to pull out the win. A year after the two fought to a draw, the second fight was almost as close. There were no knockdowns, but the action was spirited throughout as the two battled to the final bell before a frenzied crowd at the T-Mobile Arena. Two judges favoured Alvarez 115-113, while a third had it 114-114. The AP scored it 114-114. “He’s a great fighter but I’m a great fighter and I showed it tonight,” Alvarez said. CORIC ENDS UNITED STATES COMEBACK TO SEND CROATIA TO DAVIS CUP FINAL By ANDREW DAMPF AP Sports Writer ZADAR, Croatia (AP) — Croatia — just barely — is going to the Davis Cup final. After eight hours of tennis yesterday, Borna Coric ended a sustained comeback bid from the United States by rallying from two sets to one down to beat Frances Tiafoe 6-7 (0), 6-1, 6-7 (11), 6-1, 6-3 in the fifth and decisive match of a topsy-turvy semi-final. “This is the most special moment of my whole life — by far,” Coric said. Seeking its second title, Croatia will visit defending champion France in the November 23-25 final. Earlier, substitute Sam Querrey had rallied from a deep hole to keep the US alive. Querrey, who was playing in place of Steve Johnson, beat sixth-ranked Marin Cilic 6-7 (2), 7-6 (6), 6-3, 6-4 to even the best-of-five series at 2-2. “To have a rookie perform the way that Frances did in the fifth match is very

impressive,” US captain Jim Courier said. “What Sam did, turning his match around, was kind of mind-boggling. So there’s a lot to process from today. “I’m still not sure I’m there.
